A Classic is Being Refitted

122-foot Philip & Sons Atlantide

Atlantide , the classic 122-foot Philip & Sons build from 1930, has arrived at Royal Huisman’s Huisfit facility in the Netherlands for a refit that is expected to be finished in spring 2022.

The owner of Atlantide is Silicon Valley’s Jim Clark, who in 2020 commissioned the yard to refit his J-Class yacht Hanuman , along with other vessels in previous years. The work on Atlantide will be more of a restoration than a refit, according to Huisfit.

Atlantide was shipped from Newport, Rhode Island, to the Netherlands the first week of 2021.

“If a discerning client commissions a fourth very substantial project to the same shipyard, you just know that the work you perform is truly appreciated,” Jan Timmerman, CEO of Royal Huisman, stated in a press release. “So we are most honored to find ourselves in the position to realize yet another dream for our esteemed clients Jim and Kristy Clark.”

How much work does Huisfit expect to do on Atlantide ? The yard is calling the restoration “a project so grand in scale that we will be allocating it the same status as a new project.”

122' (37.19m) ATLANTIDE Sold

Posted October 15, 2020 in Brokerage & New Build by Morgan Crowe

Northrop & Johnson is delighted to announce the in-house sale of the 122-foot (37.19m) ATLANTIDE by Yacht Broker Hank Halsted, representing the buyer and the seller.

Built in 1930, ATLANTIDE has been the pinnacle of iconic classic yachts at every turn of her 90-year history. Christened as CALETA, she was designed by Alfred Mylne and built by Phillip and Sons of Dartmouth for Sir William Burton, the helmsman of J-Class SHAMROCK, England’s challenger to the America’s Cup in 1930. Burton enjoyed the yacht as a tender to his 12 Meters for a decade until she was recruited to England’s fleet of “Little Ships” for Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of English and Allied troops from Dunkirk. Her service entitled her to be one of the few yachts invited to fly the distinguished St. George’s Cross.

ATLANTIDE was purchased by a Greek shipping magnate after WWII and underwent a two-year total restoration at Thornycroft Shipbuilding, Southampton. She was relaunched as ARIANE in 1948 and graced the Mediterranean’s waters for the next half a century until Yachtsman Tom Perkins purchased her. The motorsailer then underwent a total rebuild and refit at Camper & Nicholson with naval architecture by Nigel Gee & Associates and a new interior, deck and superstructure by Ken Freivokh Design. With $18,000,000 to $20,000,000 spent, this is reputed to have been one of the most expensive refits per meter to date.

Relaunched as new in 1999 and again refit from 2013 to 2015, ATLANTIDE is arguably the world’s most elegantly detailed expedition Motorsailer. Fully stabilized and with a proper sailplan on two spars. ATLANTIDE is a kinetic sculpture, a work of art that comes to life in the utilization. The yacht showcases Art Deco aspects throughout her design and décor to a standard that celebrates the glasswork of renowned Deco artisan Rene Lalique, to an unparalleled level of detail.

ATLANTIDE offers accommodations for six guests in three elegant staterooms, which include a master, VIP and a double bed stateroom. The yacht also has main and dining salons, wheelhouse, and entertaining decks that are sculptures unto themselves.

In a magnificent echo of yachting history, ATLANTIDE has been purchased by International Yachtsman Jim Clark, owner of the J-Class Yacht, HANUMAN. A replica of the 1936 J-Class, ENDEAVOUR II, HANUMAN was built by the Royal Huisman Shipyard in 2009 and has shared the J-Class podium ever since. Having been the tender to the J-Class SHAMROCK after her initial launch in 1930, ATLANTIDE is once again tender to a J-Class Yacht, 90 years later.

VESSEL OVERVIEW

Widely recognized as one of the most stunningly beautiful and photographed classic yachts, Atlantide’s glamour has sustained her rich history.  Owned by some of the most celebrated yachtsmen of their time, Atlantide is a gentleman’s yacht for the romantique.  One of the “Little Ships” in the Battle of Dunkirk, she is among the privileged few honored to fly St. George’s Cross.  Restored and completely rebuilt numerous times over her lifetime, her latest total restoration has reached a new pinnacle in artistry and craftsmanship of the Art Deco genre.  A showcase of museum quality and priceless Lalique furniture, glass panels and sculptures, Atlantide’s interior celebrates the 1930’s heyday.

Atlantide’s hull was completely rebuilt and replated in 1998 at the Manoel Shipyard in Malta, then she was shipped to Camper & Nicholson in Gosport, UK for a comprehensive rebuild including a newly designed deck and superstructure, all new interior, machinery, electronics and an Art Deco Décor that is unrivalled anywhere! The Naval Architecture was by Nigel Gee & Associates and the new superstructure, interior layout, design and décor were by Ken Freivokh Design.

Atlantide was re-launched in 1999 as the world’s most elegantly detailed expedition yacht with a proper sailplan on two spars, including a square sail for downwind and capability of 7 knots under sail alone! With her Vosper stabilizers and a range of 3,250 miles, she has regularly sailed trans-Atlantic and voyaged from the Norwegian Fjords to the rocky coast of British Columbia.

She is presently in Belfast, Maine in turn-key condition, having had additional refits from 2013-2015 maintaining and improving all systems to 'state of the art'.  Atlantide is ready to voyage the oceans of the world and be showcased at classic regattas with her charge.

Atlantide was launched in 1930 as Caleta , for Sir William Burton who was the helmsman aboard Shamrock IV, the J-Class challenger to the America’s Cup. She was designed by the gifted naval architect Alfred Mylne, designer of the Royal Yacht, Britannia  and built by Philip and Sons of Dartmouth, UK. Under Burton’s ownership, Atlantide was tender to his William Fife designed 12-Meter Iyruna (built 1927), Alfred Mylne designed 12-Meter Marina (built 1934) and Jenetta, another Mylne design 12-Meter (built 1939).  For a decade  Atlantide followed the racing fleet around the coast of England serving as Burton's summer floating home and tender to his racing yachts.

In 1939, Atlantide joined the fleet of ‘Little Ships’ requisitioned by the Royal Navy and in May of 1940 she participated in Operation Dynamo, the rescue of Allied Forces from Dunkirk. She took an active role and spent seven days under intense shelling and dive bomber attacks while rescuing soldiers from the harbor and surrounding beaches, lastly taking a stranded landing craft under   tow and delivering her 35 troops to safety. In honor of her participation in the evacuation of Dunkirk, Atlantide is one of very few ships permitted to fly the distinguished St. George’s Cross.

After the war she was purchased by Pandelis B Pandelis, a Greek shipping magnate who renamed her Ariane.   Pandelis commissioned a two-year total restoration (1946-1948) in Thornycroft Shipbuilding Company’s Woolston Yard in Southampton.   Her new homeport was Cannes.   She was subsequently purchased by Maldwin Drummond and renamed Corisande, with Antibes as her homeport. In the late 1980’s she was sold to Italian Count Nicolo delle Rose, who brought her the name Atlantide and moved her homeport to Monaco.

In 1998, Atlantide was purchased by Thomas Perkins, a who applied his substantial genius (and fortune) to a comprehensive rebuilding and refit of the yacht, which at $18-20M, is reputed to have been the most expensive refit per meter ever undertaken. Her hull was fully reconstructed and replated true to her original Mylne lines, at the Manoel Island Shipyard in Malta. Her superstructure and interior were designed by Ken Freivokh and fully rebuilt by Camper & Nicholson to dazzling standards.   Perkins returned Atlantide to her celebrated role as a yacht tender to the legendary Herreshoff schooner, Mariette of 1915 and the subsequent engineering marvel, Maltese Falcon.

After all of her rebuilds and refits, Atlantide is still unmistakably recognizable from her 1930 launch photographs.   Atlantide is presently the tender to S/Y Nellie, the restored 1903 Herreshoff 47' LOD / 64' LOA Gaff Rigged Cutter in Blue Hill Bay, Maine, located at the heart of the U.S. classic boat tradition.

THE ARTWORK

As a yacht harkening from the 1930’s, an Art Deco theme guided all aspects of the design and décor to a standard that celebrates the glasswork of renowned Deco artisan Rene Lalique, to an unprecedented level of detail. In short, Atlantide is a visual feast, beginning with the inlaid marquetry of contrasting woods quilted smoked maple, ebony, maple, and padauk, overlaid by abalone and mother of pearl roundels with trim and countertops of honey marble and other elegant contrasts that appear throughout the yacht. The marquetry is complimented with an abundance of custom inlaid Lalique glass panels, crystal glass columns, sconce lighting and sculpture.

ACCOMMODATIONS

An elegant blend of form and function, the Wheelhouse aboard Atlantide is a proper ship’s bridge with unrestricted visibility thru large, beveled glass arched windows. Aft to starboard is a full desk and office area, adjoining the spiral staircase to the lobby below. She has a full-width leather couch and matching seat outboard to port and a full, stand-up chart/navigation table at center, with code flag stowage slots aft and four full-size chart drawers below the navigation desk, which has full instrumentation, plotters and computer screens inboard. The Helm Station has a double leather seat facing the wheel and engine controls, all engine gauges, radios, navigation equipment and unrestricted 360 degree visibility. There are wing doors port and starboard for easy access to the upper deck, which has cushioned seating port, starboard and forward of the wheelhouse.

Entertainment Areas Atlantide's Main Salon radiates the Art Deco flavor of her interior styling and artwork, beginning with the custom bronze skylight at center with many glass prisms that cast rainbow reflections over the twin leather couches and antique art deco glass table below. The forward bulkhead has a sculpted electric fireplace at center with bookshelves outboard and full width mantle piece with inlaid Lalique glass panels, an original lighthouse oil painting on the bulkhead above, flanked by twin panels with exquisite inlaid marquetry of a stylized fish design on a stylized cross in contrasting woods, abalone and mother of pearl roundels.  The entire salon is detailed with Lalique sconce lighting, an Edgar Brandt Deco bronze lamp and Deco detailing at every glance.

The Dining Salon is full width, forward on the main deck with comfortable seating for 10 around the oval table with marquetry of quilted smoked maple wrapped in ebony with Lalique inlays at every seating position. The Deco theme abounds, with a sculpted nymph panel, backlit with fiber optics and framed with floor to ceiling Lalique columns on the aft bulkhead, Lalique blown glass lighting displays with sculpted plates at the forward quarters and Lalique glass door panels. The dining salon is surrounded on three sides by arched, beveled glass windows which frame a panoramic view of the horizon and sky.

The Main Deck Dining area is aft of the salon, adjoining via double doors to port, wide enough to cultivate a contiguous social flow. The oval varnished teak dining table has a smoked glass flat panel at center, directly above a similar panel in the teak decking below, which creates a framed skylight above the berth in the Master Stateroom! The dining area is covered and protected from the elements by a cambered, semi-rigid canvas overhead that was added in 2013 . Fully aft on the main deck, the transom area is well cushioned as a lounge.

Forward of the dining table, a teak spiral staircase leads to the Bridge Deck, which allows access to all sailhandling, upper davits and seating in steamer chairs. The wheelhouse has a full walk around deck with cushioned seating on three sides, an entrance aft and wing doors as well.

Guest Accommodations Another sculpted staircase aft in the salon leads to the lobby for the Owner and VIP Staterooms. The Master Stateroom is aft, with a platform double berth on centerline and a fan shaped silk and mirror headboard, Lalique glass lights on the nightstands, opening ports for natural ventilation and an oval skylight to the deck above for natural daylight. Forward to starboard is a sculpted leather chair with large sconce light and to port, a writing desk with bookshelf outboard. The full bureau on the forward bulkhead is crowned with an exquisite marquetry fan of abalone and mother of pearl roundels and contrasting wood laminates. The ensuite head is separated by a full height opaque Lalique glass panel and the Deco tiled tub/shower is also framed in Lalique glass.

The VIP Stateroom is forward in the lobby with a walk around double berth and very similar décor and ambiance to the Master, including the floor to ceiling Lalique panel at the entry, silk and mirror headboard and full Lalique/Deco shower area. The third Guest Stateroom is accessed from the spiral staircase in the main deck lobby and offers a double berth outboard below opening ports, ample stowage, ensuite head and shower.

The Galley is amidships to port, accessed from the side deck for serving the main deck dining area and also from the main deck lobby for serving the Dining or Main Salon. The galley has a full, ’yacht’ finish with maple table, (4) tulip swivel seats and teak & holly cabin sole, with full commercial capabilities via (3), floor to ceiling refrigerator/freezer boxes an abundance of cabinet and counter space.

Crew Accommodations Also accessed by the spiral staircase, the crew area has berths for six crew, including a full lounge aft with ‘L’ shaped settee and fold out table, with TV, CD, stereo, navigation monitors & alarms. The Captain’s Cabin is forward to starboard with single and double berths, ample stowage and ensuite head and shower. Washer, dryer and utility area are forward, and two additional Crew Cabins, each with over/ under berths plus ensuite head and showers forward.

HULL AND DECK

Atlantide’s hull was completely reconstructed and replated in 1998 at the Manoela Island Shipyard in Malta. Her deck and superstructure were fully redesigned and rebuilt by Camper & Nicholson in Gosport, UK with naval architecture by Nigel Gee & Associates and overall exterior and interior design by Ken Freivokh Design. In sum, Atlantide was completely reconstructed as new, including engines, stabilizers, updates to her spars and rigging to enhance stability at sea and the ability to navigate in tradewind conditions under sail power alone.

ENGINE AND MECHANICAL DETAILS

The engine room aboard Atlantide is truly an extension of the Deco sculpture that comprises all other areas of the Yacht. The freshly rebuilt Gardner 8L3B engines are at the core of this sculpture, including polished stainless cylinder heads, polished and fanned fuel lines and polished brass manual shift levers.

This broker is honored to represent Atlantide, truly the paragon of iconic classic yachts at every turn of her 90 year history.  She was the tender to Mariette when I served as navigator for the 2002 New York Yacht Club Cruise in Maine and she was the Committee Boat for the 2005 St. Barths Bucket when I also had the opportunity to spend time aboard.  In truth, I never fully appreciated the depth of artistic detailing that comprises every nuance of her design and construction until I began researching this listing four months ago. Simply stated, the closer you look, the better she gets.  Atlantide is a timeless masterpiece in all respects.

» boat builders, » boating events, do you like classic yachts then you'll fall inlove with "atlantide", the 37.28 metre atlantide is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful classic yachts in existence today. originally built in 1930 by the philip and sons shipyard in dartmouth, england, she has lead a fascinating life. from surviving her enlistment in the wwii efforts, to serving italian aristocracy in the 80s, to falling into disrepair and being picked up by the legendary late yachtsman, tom perkins, in the late 90s, she has beat the odds stacked up against her. charming owner after owner, each as in love with her as the last, she has been meticulously maintained throughout her lifetime, and today, is in better shape than ever before. richard fairbanks, together with his wife, leslie, are the latest in atlantides impressive line of loving owners. here we talk to fairbanks about what exactly attracted the couple to atlantide, and why they have no plans to move on any time soon. you purchased atlantide in 2012 - did you own a yacht before taking ownership yes, we owned several larger feadships and cruised the world with friends and family. the most recent one was named northern light. she had a john munford designed interior with fluted mahogany columns and custom designed furniture made by munford. extensive artwork accented this classic gentlemans yacht. atlantide has topped several lists of the worlds most beautiful classic yachts, but she is, perhaps, not quite what the majority would look for in a new vessel. what were you looking for when you purchased atlantide atlantide found us we were not planning to purchase another yacht at the time. one look at atlantide and leslie woke me up at 2:30 in the morning to show me photographs of the prettiest boat she has ever seen. a few days later we were sailing her along the coast of majorca, and found atlantide to be a masterpiece inside and out. restored by legendary yachtsman tom perkins and his designer ken freivokh, who claimed it to be the most expensive restoration per foot of any yacht, she shows it from her museum quality collection of lalique crystal, to a one-of-a-kind antique bugatti teak and mahogany tender (complete with a handmade single cylinder 2 hp bugatti engine personally built by ettore bugatti) to her gleaming classic gardner diesel engines. atlantides ettore bugatti 9 power launch is especially cherished among bugatti aficionados for her unique history in the bugatti legacy and her rarity. atlantide has a wonderfully storied history; starting with her design by legendary alfred mylne, designer of the royal yacht britannia, for yachtsman sir william burton. a little more than a decade later she played a heroic role in rescuing, while under fire, english and french soldiers stranded in the battle of dunkirk. did the rich history of the yacht attract you to her yes, atlantides rich history very definitely appeals to us and we are particularly drawn to yacht, automotive and architectural designs of the 1930s and the art deco period. at the time burton commissioned atlantide, he was helmsman of sir thomas liptons shamrock iv, the j class challenger for the 1930 americas cup, and burton used atlantide as a tender for a succession of j class yachts. tom perkins followed suit and atlantide was used as a tender to his beautifully restored 1915 herreshoff twin-masted schooner mariette. on a smaller scale, we use atlantide as a tender for our 1903 herreshoff cutter/racer while competing in classic boat regattas in new england waters. atlantides timeless beauty has seduced one dedicated owner after another to care for her and in return she has given her owners more than a million miles of sailing pleasure. where do you tend to cruise with atlantide until things settle down in the eastern mediterranean, we will cruise the u.s. east coast and canada from the chesapeake to montreal, and possibly, western greenland. we have cruised all over the world and our very favorite cruising waters are coastal maine. the protected calm waters of the pristine deep bays, diverse wildlife and thousands of islands to visit and explore are always a pleasure for our family and guests. we never get tired of this area and can take a different passage home every trip. it was important to us that we could maneuver into tight coves and onto smaller docks found in coastal maine, and atlantide allows us this up-close look. hearing a pilot whale and calf breathing alongside in a morning fog before you see them is an unforgettable memory. a charter experience on board such a fascinating and gracefully restored vessel would definitely be a one-of-a-kind experience. is charter something that you would ever look at we do not charter atlantide, and have no plans to charter her since her rebuild completed in 1999, atlantide has been kept in pristine condition. do you plan on doing any work to her in the future we have done a complete rebuild of all the mechanicals and electronics, including a complete rebuild of both gardner engines down to the mains over the past two years. she is a new boat once again her interior has been maintained in museum-quality condition. this interview was featured in the ninth edition of the superyacht times bi-monthly newspaper. subscribe now and never miss another issue..

Five classic superyachts brought back to life from the brink

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Not every owner relishes the prospect of a shiny new-build when they have the option to restore a beloved classic. Read on to discover some of the world’s most fascinating and valuable classic superyachts, which were brought back from the brink by their patient owners...

There is something intensely magical about the act of restoration: the feat of rescuing something that has fallen into a state of disrepair and returning it to its original condition. For owners, there is a process of falling completely for the yacht – something which compels them. British sailor Tracey Edwards recalls how restoring the yacht that became Maiden ceased to be purely about practicalities. “I fell in love with her,” she remembers simply. It is something to which many owners could relate.

The recovery of something that was once great is a venture infused with nostalgia and romance. Particularly, perhaps, when its heyday is recorded in writing or in photographs that survive. And while this could apply to lots of things, the very word “wreck” is strongly redolent of boats.

A wreck that has been restored, of course, is no longer a wreck. But henceforth she will always have once been one – and this fact will remain an element in the boat’s story, a source of pride and interest for those who continue to sail her.

Built in 1930, Atlantide (as she is now known) is now in her 90s – a venerable old lady, sprightlier than most nonagenarians after judicious refits. She is a beautiful boat with an illustrious past.

Designed by Alfred Mylne , Atlantide served as a tender for a J Class America’s Cup challenger. Then, in 1940, she was one of the “Little Ships” that evacuated more than 330,000 Allied troops from the Dunkirk beaches, entitling her, unusually, to fly the St George’s Cross.

After a post-war refit, she spent 50 years in the Mediterranean and was given her current name in the 1980s. Then, shortly before 2000, she was bought by yachtsman and technologist Tom Perkins, who devoted time and money to the further refit that Atlantide desperately needed.

Yacht designer Ken Freivokh remembers the project with great fondness, travelling to Malta with Perkins to view the boat. When he did so he was horrified. Her condition, he recalls, was “very, very poor, half-abandoned”. She was being used as a dive-boat, and an out-of-keeping superstructure had been put on top, destroying the boat’s elegant sheer line and making her look “very strange”.

What he could see immediately, however, was her underlying beauty and potential. But she needed a major restoration, and about 90 per cent of the plating along her spine had to be either restored or replaced. Freivokh contacted an aluminium worker who built an entirely new and more appropriate superstructure.

Freivokh and his team were given exceptional input, the licence (and the money) to do whatever they felt necessary. In addition to the standard requirements of yacht renovation, they had extraordinary paintings and antiques at their disposal. They were able to commission further art deco artworks too – of a style that complemented the yacht and her era. The boat and her contents might have ended up, he reckons now, as “inch-for-inch the most extraordinary yacht afloat”: a big claim, but one that’s hard to deny.

After Perkins’ passing in June 2016, Atlantide was sent to Royal Huisman in the Netherlands by another owner and American technologist – Jim Clark, who also built J Class boat Hanuman as well as Hyperion . It is fair to say that, for all the ups and downs of her past, Atlantide ’s future looks rosy, well beyond her centenary in 2030.

Western Flyer

We might think 2021 a bad year, but in 1940, as Nazi Germany invaded Norway, the world truly “went to hell”, wrote the future Nobel-laureate John Steinbeck. Far from these hostilities, having published The Grapes of Wrath to both acclaim and notoriety the previous year, Steinbeck motored along the coast of Mexico and California, into the Gulf of California. There, as he had hoped, “the great world dropped away”.

In an out-of-season sardine-fishing “purse-seiner”, then named Western Flyer , he and a small crew examined and collected marine animals, negotiating “wrecks and wayward currents”. Though they marvelled at “the incredible beauty of the tide pools” and “the swarming species”, it was no idyll. Things seemed “to sting and pinch and bite” worse than in other places. The region was “fierce and hostile and sullen”. Written up as The Log from The Sea of Cortez , largely as a result of Steinbeck’s enduring fame, the venture has entered literary folklore – and attached added renown to the boat.

During the decades since, the Western Flyer has – like all fishing boats – pursued catches (different species, caught often in quite different areas) as marine populations have shifted and declined: perch; king crab; salmon – far to the north or further south. The story of Western Flyer is the story of the Pacific west-coast fishery, and the story of humanity more broadly.

Rechristened Gemini , at times her ownership was hazy. Located by her unchanging call sign WB4044, she had come to resemble a ghost ship: paint peeling, mud-spattered, strangled by weed and timbers rotting. She has sunk at least twice, become completely unseaworthy, and all the time the price of restoration has grown.

She is owned now by a marine geologist called John Gregg who is restoring her with the help of Tim Lee, a shipwright from the west coast. Whereas the wheelhouse, Lee remarks, could remain remarkably intact and original – around 90 per cent of it – the hull was in a shocking condition. The starboard side, in particular, he remembers, was “completely rotten”. “If the boat had rolled over” she would probably, he remarks, “not have been salvageable.”

While some backbone timbers are original, it has been necessary to basically build a new hull. Time cannot be denied. But she – and the wider world – are lucky indeed that she has found people enthusiastic and committed enough to restore her, and to ensure that this piece of literary history can continue to “fly” along the western coast.

Shenandoah of Sark

More than once the famous yacht Shenandoah of Sark has been pulled back from the brink. As others have observed, she has really lived. She has seen all sides of life and come, in the process, perilously close to extinction.

First built for an American financier in 1902, she was in Germany before the First World War and then confiscated by the British Navy. She was given the name Shenandoah after the war, then rechristened again, this time by an Italian prince – another boat to be called Atlantide . She spent the Second World War concealed in a Danish shipyard, her masts and one of her engines removed to make her unseaworthy (and less appealing to thieves). Her post-war history included an almost year-long zoological and oceanographic expedition along the African west coast, as well as time spent smuggling in Central America – her precise location is unknown. Seized by French customs in 1962, she was tied up and left to rot before being bought and restored by a French industrialist.

Working as a charter yacht, she was sold in 1986 to a Swiss businessman who ordered a complete restoration at New Zealand shipyard  McMullen & Wing . The majority of the riveted hull was replaced, and the result was impressive: in 1996 she won the ShowBoats International award for Best Classic Yacht Restoration.

Together the owner and the yard have lavished attention upon every detail: from polished teak or redwood planking, to art deco lights and a unique, detachable deck cockpit. Further attention since to her rig and her mechanics has ensured that this is one yacht in a very fine position to advance far into – and perhaps complete – her second century.

Well past her centenary (having been built in 1913, on the eve of the First World War) Vagrant is one of the oldest yachts still afloat. There are a small number of older human beings living – but not many. And the comprehensively refitted Vagrant will almost certainly outlast them all. In 2017 she had a major refit – for almost two years – in Dutch restoration yard Royal Huisman. Her owner’s instructions were that “ Vagrant should be ready to last for another one hundred years.” Well, who can say? It certainly isn’t impossible.

Back in the distant past, Vagrant ’s designer, Nathanael Greene Herreshoff , dominated the America’s Cup between the late 19th century and the early 1930s. A boatbuilder, he was also a proficient sailor, placed in the National Sailing Hall of Fame, and helming in the America’s Cup at least once.

Vagrant was built for Harold Vanderbilt, of the famous dynasty. Herreshoff built boats for the financial big guns – William Randolph Hearst, John Pierpont (JP) Morgan, Jay Gould. Yachts, like houses, were (and are) a symbol of wealth and success, and Herreshoff’s were the finest.

Now, under relatively new ownership, Vagrant – one of the most revered classic yachts afloat – is being restored to her former greatness. Her steel hull needed substantial work (sandblasting areas of corrosion left some plates too thin and in need of replacement). But her teak interior has justified the wood’s reputation as the best natural material for a marine environment: beautiful, hard, rich in protective oil, resistant to rot and little prone to warping.

Sure enough, when removed and examined, much of the wood in the cabins could be treated and reused, even after so long (with the redesign to accommodate things such as electric lighting, plugs, heating and air conditioning, which were absent from the original boat). This clear link with the past serves to emphasise that this is very much the same boat.

Other departures from the original – aluminium masts, for instance, with internal furling for the mainsail and fisherman’s sail – seem an update rather than any kind of insult to the original maker. She might still sail under her old name of Vagrant but she has, very clearly, a loving home.

Having been built in the late 1920s, the sailing yacht Cambria was assumed, like so many, to have been destroyed during the Second World War. In fact, she had fallen into complete oblivion: vanishing not only from the present, but also from the historical record. One authoritative book on the yachts of William Fife , the renowned Scottish boatbuilder responsible for Cambria , omitted her completely. Only subsequently has she been rediscovered in every sense – restored to history and restored in the present.

Cambria was built originally for a newspaper magnate – Sir William Berry – who rose from complete obscurity (having left school in South Wales at 13) to become owner of the largest media empire of the day: publisher of titles still active and well-known, like The Sunday Times , Financial Times and The Daily Telegraph . Berry’s publications happened to include Yachting World , giving him a route to its editor.

Soon after its construction, Cambria won an early race, then for a few years raced some 50 times a year. Her beauty was much admired, and fame seemed assured. (Berry asked his wife whether she might like a matching yacht, an offer she sadly declined.) Rules of the time hindered Cambria , however, and not long afterwards she changed hands. Her name was changed and she retreated, during the 1930s, into obscurity – and then into oblivion.

Her sketchy post-war history includes an ill-fated circumnavigation during the 1970s, before being bought, and mothballed, in Australia, until finally she was rediscovered near the Great Barrier Reef. Her basic structure, mahogany planking on a steel frame, remained intact and was remediable with careful repair work. Only in the 21st century did she return to British waters, after more than half a century. With a new mast, of spruce pine, and a thorough refit in Southampton in 2006 which saw Cambria stripped back and the boat’s stem reworked. There is no doubt now that Cambria does once again fulfil Fife’s basic requirement of a yacht – that she be both “fast and bonnie”.
