What our clients say.

I’m so glad that someone recommended us to go explore Tortuga Island but more specifically to go with Bay Island Tours! From the moment you arrive to the moment when you leave, you are always being cared for. They help you whenever possible and are all so attentive. The island itself is so beautiful and we all had so much fun! Thank you to the staff for taking such good care of us! We look forward to one day coming back!

A highlight of our Costa Rica Vacation We had an excellent time! The whole staff is super nice, and attentive. The boat ride is beautiful, the island is beautiful, the food was tasty, they even washed our feet as we entered the boat leaving the island. This trip was the highlight of our Costa Rica vacation.

This is a great tour that I would recommend if you go to Costa Rica. You will board a Catamaran fun boat from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica into the Golf of Nicoya. Where You will experience a breathless and relaxing sailing through several small islands, while being served fruit trays and drinks by Costa Rican sailors dressed in white. Narration of the history of the islands is provided as well as music by a Costa Rican band and entertainment as well.

MAKING WAVES IN THE BAY ISLANDS

We kicked off 2019 as the 1st sailing charter in Roatan & The Bay Islands to receive National Geographic's Go Blue sustainability certification!

Our commitment to protecting the Mesoamerican Reef runs deep.

Following our launch in 2018, we partnered with Go Blue Bay Islands to audit and recalibrate every aspect of our daily operations + charter experience in order to reduce AMAVI’s environmental impact and help our guests do the same. We’ve incorporated biodegradable cleaning products, mineral-based sunscreens, fully recyclable bottled beverages, and durable melamine dish ware to eliminate single use plastics altogether!

Learn more about our sustainability efforts at Go Blue Bay Islands .

LOVE ROATAN’S REEFS?

Simple steps you can take as an amavi guest:.

Leave the plastic water bottles at home! We keep you hydrated with cold, filtered H2O on board.

Wear a rash guard to stay cool and protected during and after your snorkel.

Opt for reef safe, mineral-based sunscreens…all the cool kids are doing it! Travel+Leisure Magazine has a round up of the best ones.

Avoid kicking or stepping on coral while snorkeling. Our life jackets and swim noodles keep you comfortable and safe at the surface.

Skip the dead marine life souvenirs at the gift shop and pick up a $10 bracelet to support the Roatan Marine Park instead!

The Kamanu Catamaran

The  “Kamanu Catamaran”  is Kona’s only custom 36′ catamaran built for speed and comfort. She’s 22 feet wide, making for a large stable platform with an expansive “trampoline” or webbing net up forward for lying on.  Soak in the sun and watch the ocean flow by you as you gaze through the net into the deep blue on a catamaran tour of Big Island Hawaii. Relax in the shaded open air cabin area and “talk story” with the captain and first mate.

Why Customers Love Kamanu Catamaran

a drawing of a face

We had a wonderful ,relaxing voyage! Captain and his assistant were very friendly, informative and funny! It was a beautiful evening-we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect excursion.

Amazing opportunity to get sunset pictures. Enjoyed the company of the others on the boat and the boat crew.

We did the Sunset Cruise. Our captain was very patient, and waited 20 minutes for a couple who said they were 2 minutes away, and never did show up. That doesn't include the 30 minutes prior to launch that everyone was told to arrive at. Great crew, beautiful sunset, mai tais, beer and wine were great, and the food was more than anticipated for appetizers. Definitely would recommend!

We loved our sailing and snorkeling trip! The team was wonderful, and it was magical to snorkel and see the fish. We even saw Eagle Rays, swimming in parallel, a breaktaking highlight for us. Thank you!

Beautiful snorkelling trip with a great crew. Small group, very personable and friendly crew. Really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend to anyone who would love to enjoy snorkelling without the crowds.

Captain Peter or Paul and first mate Patrick were awsome on our sunset sail out of Kona. My son wanted a sailing catamaran not a motor sail and I found Kamanu on yelp. It did not disappoint, the crew snd boat was fabulous. Felt more intimate then the larger tours. You can’t go wrong with this crew.

ALOHA FROM THE NA PALI CATAMARAN CREW

Along the Northwest corner of Kauai lies 16 miles of rugged, inaccessible coastline, known as the Na Pali Coast, meaning “The Cliffs” or “Many Cliffs.”

The Na Pali is home to some of the world’s most famous tropical locations with over 6,175 acres of undeveloped paradise. Although there are a variety of ways to explore the Na Pali Coast, a boat tour departing from Hanalei Bay has been the preferred choice amongst our island’s visitors for decades. Join Hanalei’s #1 boat tour for the adventure of a lifetime to the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth!

Aboard our two identical 35′ motorized catamarans, you’ll find the perfect middle-ground between adventure and comfort! Our vessels are small enough to enter sea caves, while large enough to provide enough room to walk around freely even at full capacity. For your comfort, we have provided a spacious restroom, sunbrella shade, forward-facing seating, and a sturdy swim ladder.

Don’t miss this chance to join us, and come experience the “highlight of your trip” with Na Pali Catamaran!

EXPERIENCE THE MOST SPECTACULAR AND DRAMATIC COASTLINE ON EARTH!

Kauai has countless natural places of beauty to experience. Allow us to show you the most beautiful parts of some of the most spectacular and dramatic coastline on earth while maintaining comfort, safety, and adventure simultaneously.

Our 35′ aluminum power catamaran, Kamahele Kai II, is small enough to enter Na Pali’s famous sea caves, yet large enough to be comfortable. Unlike other tour boats that enter the sea caves, our vessel features a bathroom, shade, adequate seating, and room to walk around freely. Even at full capacity, it is not overcrowded.

5-Star Na Pali Coast Adventures

a close up of a ball

The scenery was breathtaking and the crew was knowledgeable and fun. I recommend Na Pali Catamaran to everyone who loves land, sea and adventure. And the food ain’t bad either.

a drawing of a face

The boat was super clean. The crew was fantastic and they made the tour fantastic! I would highly recommend you take the Na'Pali coast tour with these guys!!!

Na Pali Catamaran tours are a fantastic way to see the Na Pali coast. The boat tour offers views that are not available on the helicopter tours. We especially enjoyed the sea caves and getting to enter one of them. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and made the tour very entertaining. I highly recommend this tour.

logo, icon

The best tour of the Na Pali I’ve ever had. Going into the caves was amazing. My seven year old son was so happy and had a great experience! Thank you all so much!!

We have toured the Na Pali coast several ways (top of Waimea Canyon, a sunset cruise from the west side, powered hang gliders when they were operating) and this experience outdid them all. Captain Lance and Crewman Miguel gave an astounding tour, complete with wildlife sitings, great history and information, and wonderful snorkeling with the turtles. We could tell Capt. Lance loves the sea and is very knowledgeable about ocean conditions. He was able to take us into three sea caves safely. We had a delightful afternoon. We highly recommend this activity for anyone visiting Kauai. Totally worth the time and money.

We had an incredible trip yesterday to Buck Island with a great crew on Heavenly Days Catamaran. We got to snorkel with several green sea turtles and saw small rays and the beautiful Cove at Buck Island which is a protected nature sanctuary. The water was crystal clear with a nice variety of fish and corals opening up to sandy areas with grasses that the turtles love. A great three hour sailing trip on a big catamaran in paradise. The fun young crew made the trip special too.

Heavenly Days is a well maintained boat with an excellent staff of three addressing the clients. When we struggled to find turtles at first, Toni took the guided tour to the reef and described much of the coral and fish. This was beyond any snorkel tour I've encountered. We did get back to the turtles and were able to watch them underwater and at the surface. Highly recommend for this and the sunset cruise that goes over to Charlotte Amalie Harbor.

We had a fantastic time aboard the Heavenly Days Catamaran on our Swim with the Sea Turtles excursion while staying at the Bolongo Bay Resort. The crew (Captain James, Deanna & Toni) went above and beyond and really showed us a great time. The trip lasted just over 3 hours and included a snorkel tour of Turtle Cove. We were up close and personal with the turtles Lucky (only has 3 flippers) Squirt and Barnacle Betty. Big thanks to the crew for offering this wonderful experience.

About This Boat

Heavenly Days was designed in the glory days of performance day charter catamarans in the Caribbean. Simply put, nobody builds boats like her anymore, and there are very few left in the world. Performance in this era was paramount, and Heavenly Days and her counterparts revolutionized the Caribbean vacation experience. She sports an original rotating wing mast and her wood construction, a rarity these days, is a testament to her sound construction and meticulous care. Any avid sailor would respect her design, construction, and performance.

The Sailing Hotel

Ever since Bolongo first opened our doors in 1974, we’ve been pioneering new ways to let people discover the beauty of the Virgin islands at sea. Our guests get to experience sailing to St. John, Buck and Water Island; snorkeling shipwrecks; and swimming with sea turtles on our original award-winning trip. Bolongo Bay revolutionized the Caribbean resort sailing experience, and we've played a huge part in perfecting some of the island's most popular day sail excursions to this day. We can’t wait to have you on board.

We have been coming to St John for fifteen years and the Lime Out snorkel trip is one of the best times we have ever had. Our captain and crew were incredible and the food was delicious. It is a great way to see the island and I can’t recommend it enough. Just go for it!!

Terrific crew and captain! I would repeat saying that again and again! The weather was sublime and the water perfect! The tacos hit the spot and the music was perfect for the entire vibe!

It was perfect! Good music, delicious food, and wonderful sites to see. It was exactly what my family and I wanted in a sunset cruise! I would 100% book again the next time on St. John.

Amazing trip! Wendy and the crew couldn’t have been kinder and more attentive. Helpful, informative, and made it a really fun day. Got to see so much of the island. Highly recommend!

Easy to book and amazing from start to finish! The boat was pristine, as was the route and information about the islands and spots to snorkel. The crew was so friendly and accommodating. Best snorkeling experience I’ve had.

We had a fantastic time. The captain, crew, tour, snorkeling, lunch, beverages, and boat were top-notch. Thanks for a wonderful day and lifetime memories.

Amazing experience!! You can tell the crew are very passionate and work well as a team. My husband and I were on our honeymoon and that was definitely our top adventure.

After I booked the communication was very fast and accurate. The driver was very timely in picking us up in the morning and drove us to Grand Bay. The cruise itself was more than we expected - I like how friendly and decent the boat crew was. What I also liked is the total liberty and privacy they give you once on the island - you are basically free to do whatever you want at your own pace.

From the very first enquiry, I was impressed. I did some research and contacted several companies to find the right north island cruise for us but all others took their time in replying and I had to ask a number of information. Mauritius Gabriel was always prompt with answering my queries.

Would I refer them to my friends… I already have!

We've done several catamaran cruises across the world. This one stands out more because of the local touch to the cruise. The staff are friendly, and most important attentive to little details. Want to stop the boat for some photos - just ask them, and they'll do it. Need more drinks? Just ask and you'll be served.

Copy My Trip: Island hopping through the British Virgin Islands

Chamidae Ford

Jul 26, 2024 • 5 min read

Feature image- BVI Copy my trip

Views like this one of Brewers Bay are one of the many reasons to visit the British Virgin Islands. BVI Tourism. BVI Tourism

Lonely Planet writer Chamidae Ford just returned from five blissful days in the British Virgin Islands . Here, she shares a swimming-filled itinerary and tips for experiencing the most of this stunning destination.

On my recent journey to the BVI, with the help of MMGY and the British Virgin Islands Tourism Board , I joined a group of travel writers where we spent five days sailing between its various islands, eating fresh fruit straight from the source and swimming in turquoise waters.

What was your route?

Near Puerto Rico lies an archipelago known as the British Virgin Islands. During my five days, we cruised through the Caribbean, exploring four of the territory's countless islands. We began at Guana Island , which is just a quick boat ride from the island of Tortola . Here, we relaxed, enjoyed farm-to-table cuisine and swam at their various beaches. From there, we returned to Tortola, the BVI’s main island, where we hiked, swam and dined at some local favorites Quito’s Gazebo and 1748.

We then boarded a catamaran and visited Anegada Island , a sparsely populated coral and limestone island (the only one in the BVI not formed from volcanic origin) known for its flat terrain. We also stopped by Cooper Island .

Mostly undeveloped beyond the Cooper Island Beach Club, this is a popular mooring destination for catamarans and an ideal lunch spot when making your way through this part of the Caribbean.

In Anegada, we visited the Conch Mounds and ate our weight in lobster. On Cooper, we toured the BVI’s only microbrewery and enjoyed their Turtle IPA, which donates one dollar of every sale to BVI turtle conservation. Then we spent the rest of the afternoon jumping into the ocean off the catamaran.

Two views of patios at tropical hotels overlooking the ocean

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

Since we were bopping around, we stayed at a few different places. The stunning Long Bay Beach Resort managed to weave beachy aesthetics with a chic and inviting design. We also spent time onboard a Moorings Catamaran, which was spacious and surprisingly comfortable – is there anything better than waking up on the water?

But my favorite part of the trip was our time at Guana Island . Every room had killer panoramic views, and things couldn’t have been more peaceful and serene – we were at the only hotel on this private island. I could have stayed forever.

Favorite-photos-updated.jpg

What’s your favorite photo from the trip, and where was it taken?

My favorite photo(s) has to be of the view from my hotel room on the Guana Islands. From the back porch, I enjoyed an unobstructed view of the bay – home to North Beach – from the back porch, while the front porch had perfect views of the sunset in the distance.

I spent a morning on my balcony reading, and it was so tranquil and relaxing. I could hear the birds chirping, and there was a slight breeze off the water. It’s a moment I would cherish forever, and I instantly knew I would never stop recommending everyone experience it for themselves.

Chamidae Ford sits with a drink on the beach; view of turquoise bay in BVI

Favorite activity from the trip?

I’m a certified water lover, and the nonstop swimming was by far my favorite activity on the trip. The first night we arrived on Guana Island, I slipped away before dinner for a quick dip in the ocean.

Just as the sky turned pink, I dove into the crystal clear water at one of Guana Island's seven beaches. It was the first time in my life I’ve ever had a beach entirely to myself. With soft white sand and warm water, it was the ideal place to refresh after a long day of travel.

Guana Island was only the beginning; I swam basically every day. Whether it was jumping off the catamaran or enjoying Long Bay’s pool and swim-up bar, I couldn’t get enough.

Rum barrels in a workroom at Callwood Distillery in BVI

What is the one thing that you did not expect?

I did not expect how non-touristy the BVI felt! Everywhere we went, we met people born and raised in the BVI.

They shared what the BVI was like throughout their lifetime and told us about process of recovering after Hurricane Irma in 2017, and their stories were really powerful. You could feel how much people love their homeland and what a special place this destination is.

One significant factor contributing to the BVI’s authenticity is that there are no major chain corporations on the island. Dining at local restaurants and shopping at locally owned businesses helps you feel like you’re getting the full experience.

At one point, we visited the Callwood Distillery , which has continuously produced rum for over 200 years. During our tasting, we learned that the woman guiding us through the experience was actually a Callwood herself. It was so special to hear her teach us about her family’s history.

Flamingos wade through shallow water in BVI

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

Try to visit some of the lesser-known islands, like Anegada. It has an entirely different terrain than the other islands; long and flat, it contrasts with the other islands' towering hills. It is known for its fabulous lobster, flamingo sightings and abundance of conch, and with only about 450 residents, it has a different pace than islands like Tortola.

During our visit to Anegada, we took a boat out to Conch Island.  Locals have been discarding conch shells here for over 200 years, creating stunning mounds. The practice came about to help fishermen avoid grabbing empty shells when they are hunting for fresh conch.

The mounds are surprisingly beautiful with its pink and white hues, and they act as a makeshift coral reef for fish, which provides a prime snorkeling spot. It felt like viewing an art installation. I’ve never seen anything like it!

Close-up shots of tropical fruit in BVI

Best thing you ate?

We ate so much good food in the BVI, but the fresh fruit was my favorite. During our time in Guana Island, we took a tour of their orchard and garden, which supplies most of the fruits and vegetables used in their restaurant.

During our tour we sampled fresh star fruit, passion fruit, coconut, mango, wax apples, and papaya. I particularly loved the wax apple, which reminded me more of a pear than an apple.

The fresh fruit didn't stop when we left Guana Island, though. We hit the trail with Hike BVI , where we visited a pineapple farm, learned about the pineapple-growing process and enjoying some that had just been freshly picked. I also tried soursop, a slightly gooey, tart local fruit that I couldn’t get enough of.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The world’s first hydrogen-powered commercial passenger ferry will start operating on San Francisco Bay as part of plans to phase out diesel-powered vessels and reduce planet-warming carbon emissions, California officials said Friday, demonstrating the ship.

The 70-foot (21-meter) catamaran called the MV Sea Change will transport up to 75 passengers along the waterfront between Pier 41 and the downtown San Francisco ferry terminal starting July 19, officials said. The service will be free for six months while it’s being run as part of a pilot program.

“The implications for this are huge because this isn’t its last stop,” said Jim Wunderman, chair of the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority, which runs commuter ferries across the bay. “If we can operate this successfully, there are going to be more of these vessels in our fleet and in other folks’ fleets in the United States and we think in the world.”

Sea Change can travel about 300 nautical miles and operate for 16 hours before it needs to refuel. The fuel cells produce electricity by combining oxygen and hydrogen in an electrochemical reaction that emits water as a byproduct.

The technology could help clean up the shipping industry, which produces nearly 3% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions, officials said. That’s less than from cars, trucks, rail or aviation but still a lot — and it’s rising.

Frank Wolak, president and CEO of the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association, said the ferry is meaningful because it’s hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vessels.

“The real value of this is when you multiply out by the number of ferries operating around the world,” he said. “There’s great potential here. This is how you can start chipping away at the carbon intensity of your ports.”

Backers also hope hydrogen fuel cells could eventually power container ships.

The International Maritime Organization, which regulates commercial shipping, wants to halve its greenhouse gas releases by midcentury.

As fossil fuel emissions continue warming Earth’s atmosphere, the Biden administration is turning to hydrogen as an energy source for vehicles, manufacturing and generating electricity. It has been offering $8 billion to entice the nation’s industries, engineers and planners to figure out how to produce and deliver clean hydrogen.

Environmental groups say hydrogen presents its own pollution and climate risks.

For now, the hydrogen that is produced globally each year, mainly for refineries and fertilizer manufacturing, is made using natural gas. That process warms the planet rather than saving it. Indeed, a new study by researchers from Cornell and Stanford universities found that most hydrogen production emits carbon dioxide, which means that hydrogen-fueled transportation cannot yet be considered clean energy.

Yet proponents of hydrogen-powered transportation say that in the long run, hydrogen production is destined to become more environmentally safe. They envision a growing use of electricity from wind and solar energy, which can separate hydrogen and oxygen in water. As such renewable forms of energy gain broader use, hydrogen production should become a cleaner and less expensive process.

The Sea Change project was financed and managed by the investment firm SWITCH Maritime. The vessel was constructed at Bay Ship and Yacht in Alameda, California, and All-American Marine in Bellingham, Washington.
