Pure in beauty and timeless allure,

these volcanic islands have the kind of rugged, unaltered magnetism that is increasingly scarce, and are home to endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. For wildlife enthusiasts, there is no greater pilgrimage than a trip to the place that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution and formulated in “Origin of Species”.

From the bow of your luxury expedition vessel, search the coastline for bottlenose dolphins. and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, snorkel alongside the playful sea lions during an outing on your yacht..

You’ll see plenty of creatures during your tour of the Galápagos, including green sea turtles and —during a pilgrimage to the island of Isabela— the famed giant tortoises. Try and match their leisurely pace as these prehistoric reptiles mosey across the island.

A flash of cobalt can give away a cartoonish blue-footed booby, while a line of birdsong may belong to one of Darwin’s namesake finches.

Galapagos FAQs

  • Santa Cruz Island is the centrally located "main island" in the Galapagos and serves as the biggest port for cruises and base for land-tours . The town of Puerto Ayora has a growing population of 18,000 people and a number of restaurants, shops, bars, and hotels. It is accessed by Baltra Island Airport.
  • Isabela Island is the westernmost, biggest, and youngest of the inhabited Galapagos Islands. There are six active volcanoes here that can be explored and some of the best snorkeling opportunities as well. The quiet town of Puerto Villamil has managed to maintain its fishing village atmosphere despite the growth in tourism to the Islands.
  • Floreana , in the southern part of the archipelago, is one of the most historic islands in the Galapagos, home to centuries-old legends and tales of betrayal and romance, pirates, whalers, and artifacts that remind us how real this period was in the Galapagos Islands.
  • San Cristobal in the far east of the Galapagos Islands is the administrative capital of this Ecuadorian province from the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and is home to some of the best surfing and land-based exploration sites, like the giant El Junco freshwater lagoon, geological formations, Cerro Brujo & Lobos Island and more.
  • Galapagos & the Amazon: The  Ecuadorian Amazon   has the most easily accessible area of the Amazon Rainforests, and one of the most diverse. It's usually experienced from an eco-lodge. If you love the idea of another cruise, then visit Peru's Amazon  to take a river cruise from the town of Iquitos .
  • Galapagos & Machu Picchu : Check off another wonder of the world by visiting Machu Picchu to see this impressive architectural landmark of the Inca empire. From here you can look out over the Sacred Valley and stop in the colonial city of Cuzco en route.
  • Galapagos & the Andes : Whether you're taking in history and culture in the the colonial Ecuadorian capital city of Quito , exploring the active glaciated Cotopaxi Volcano , or enjoying national parks and colonial streets in the southern Andean city of  Cuenca , these towering peaks and volcanoes seem to put the whole world in perspective.

Galapagos Ecotourism - Have a Positive Impact on the Islands

Responsible travel to galapagos with adventure life.

  • Prioritize conservation! Travel to the Galapagos Islands is heavily monitored and fairly restricted by Ecuador's Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment and the Galapagos National Park. Those who have the privilege to visit this fragile archipelago also have to play their part and practice responsible tourism by booking with operators committed to "green" travel practices (like the ones that we feature). It's also up to you to follow the Leave No Trace guidelines and make sure to respect all of the rules that your guides tell you (like not feeding the animals and staying on the trails).
  • Plan your trip around your interests. From kayaking and scuba diving to hiking and photography, activities offered on most itineraries are varied and entertaining. Most cruises try to fit in at least two daily excursions and activities to maximize your experience. If you're an avid kayaker or photographer, for example, make sure that your itinerary allows for plenty of time for these options.
  • Experience the marine life by snorkeling! Even if you've never been snorkeling or don't consider yourself a particularly strong swimmer, it is worth it to take the plunge in Galapagos and explore the fantastic rainbow of coral and marine life hidden underwater.
  • Plan longer trips. While you might find a 4- or 5-day cruise for a much more economical price, we recommend staying at least 8 days. This will not only allow you to see more of the Galapagos Islands and experience more activities, but longer stays also help the local economy and community.

6 Best Galapagos Cruises For Every Kind of Traveler

By Meena Thiruvengadam

Galapagos cruises are the best way to experience the collection of remote, mostly uninhabited islands about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. But cruises in the Galapagos Islands aren’t like cruises anyplace else. The ships here are smaller, with some carrying as few as 16 passengers. There are no water slides, elaborate Broadway shows, casinos, or wild nightclubs. And don’t expect big bus tours in port either.

Galapagos cruises are about experiencing nature and wildlife while limiting environmental impact as much as possible. Ships are built for sustainability and toting items like kayaks, paddleboards, and scuba gear. Itineraries may feature two active excursions a day, limiting downtime on board the ship. Instead of museums and historic sights, you’ll visit uninhabited islands to encounter marine iguanas, sea lions, unspoiled beaches, and the adventures of a lifetime.

Trips to the Galapagos Islands are logistically complicated, making cruises an especially good way to experience the area. Travelers to the Galapagos Islands must first fly to Quito or Guayaquil, Ecuador, for a night before flying to the Galapagos to board their ships. All travelers must also be accompanied by National Parks Guides who can help them navigate these largely undeveloped islands.

Galapagos cruise itineraries are typically a week long and cover a portion of the islands, sometimes more. Here's everything to know about cruising in the Galapagos, from frequently asked questions to the best itineraries to book now.

  • Best luxury Galapagos cruise
  • Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing
  • Best Galapagos cruise for adventure seekers
  • Best Galapagos cruises for solo travelers
  • Best small ship Galapagos cruise

Best Galapagos cruises for families

When is the best time to cruise the galapagos islands .

With pleasant temperatures all year long, the best time to visit the Galapagos Islands is whenever you’re ready to go. Several cruise lines sail to the Galapagos Islands all year long. While you can see wildlife all year, December is hatching season for the giant tortoises, and July is mating season for blue-footed boobies and short-eared owls. Sea turtles lay their eggs early in the year and fully formed marine iguanas typically hatch in April and May.

Are Galapagos cruises expensive?

The Galapagos Islands aren’t a bargain destination. Expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $12,000 per traveler depending on the ship, itinerary, and length of the voyage.

One thing’s for sure: Whatever your preference, there’s a Galapagos Islands cruise for you. These are six of the best Galapagos cruises for every type of traveler.

All listings featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. If you book something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Silver Origin cruising the Galapagos Islands.

A suite on board Silver Origin comes with butler service.

Best luxury Galapagos cruise

There’s no more luxurious way to sail the Galapagos Islands than on  Silversea's Silver Origin , a ship custom-built for cruising these islands. Silver Origin is Silversea’s first destination-specific ship and includes several features meant to minimize its environmental impact. The all-suite ship can carry up to 100 passengers, is all-inclusive down to the premium spirits in your stateroom's minibar, and includes the luxury cruise line’s signature butler service. There’s also a salon and fitness center on board, a rarity for ships sailing in this region. Most itineraries on the Silver Origin are seven nights, but longer cruises are typically scheduled around winter holidays. The Silver Origin sails the north, central, and western loops of the Galapagos Islands.

Best Galapagos cruise for stargazing

This region may be better known for its landscapes and wildlife, but the Galapagos Islands are also an excellent place for stargazing. And there’s no better Galapagos cruise ship for stargazing than the  Celebrity Flora . The 100-passenger vessel feels more like a luxury yacht than an expedition ship. It has a stargazing platform on its top deck and provides binoculars to help guests spot constellations as the ship cruises along the equator. The modern expedition ship also offers a glamping experience that includes a naturalist-guided stargazing session and a luxurious night of glamping under the stars. Prefer to sleep in your bed on board? Have dinner under the stars at the ship’s restaurant before heading back to your suite. The Celebrity Flora ’s Galapagos itineraries range from seven to 16 nights.

Best Galapagos cruise for adventure seekers

Lindblad Expeditions has been cruising the Galapagos Islands for more than 50 years. It now sails to the Galapagos year-round in partnership with National Geographic, giving guests the chance to encounter giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, penguins, sea lions, marine iguanas, and more. A staff of expert guides is on board to help travelers spot wildlife and better understand the volcanic landscapes, mangrove thickets, and seagrasses they encounter. Activities include unforgettable snorkeling adventures, hikes through pristine wilderness, and walks along remote beaches. Lindblad’s newest Galapagos Islands cruise ship, the National Geographic Islander II , feels more like a boutique hotel than an expedition ship and carries just 48 passengers in 26 suites. Some itineraries offer advanced divers the chance to commune with a variety of marine life. And while rugged adventures may await travelers off the ship, each suite offers travelers plenty of comfort: They come equipped with flat-screen TVs, in-room espresso machines, and bathrooms with double sinks.

Best Galapagos cruises for solo travelers

Galapagos cruises aren’t cheap, especially if you’re sailing solo. Hurtigruten makes cruising the Galapagos Islands more affordable by waiving the single supplement on several of its Galapagos cruises. Hurtigruten Galapagos cruises range from seven to 14 days in length and take place on the MS Santa Cruz II , a ship that comes equipped with panga boats, kayaks, snorkeling gear, paddleboards, and a glass-bottom boat for viewing marine life. The ship carries a maximum of 90 passengers, and its operations are carbon-neutral. There’s a small gym and a hot tub on board. Regular prices start around $8,500 for a one-week cruise. Look for sales to bring your price down even further.

Best small ship Galapagos cruise

Avalon Waterways may be better known for its European river cruises , but it also sails the Galapagos Islands. Avalon sails this region on two ships, the Treasure of the Galapagos and the Delfin III . The Delfin III , which also sails the Amazon in Peru, is its newest and most luxurious Galapagos cruise ship. The ship has just 22 suites, almost guaranteeing you’ll make new friends along the journey. The Treasure of the Galapagos is even smaller, carrying a maximum of 16 guests. And while there’s no long list of restaurants on board either ship, there are creative, locally inspired menus featuring seasonal ingredients and lots of vegetarian options. On board both ships, you’ll find daily natural history lectures, a team of multilingual naturalists, floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows, and plunge pools.

For an adventure your kids will never forget, hop on board an Adventures by Disney cruise of the Galapagos Islands. Just be sure to wait until your kids are at least seven years old. This is the minimum age for most Galapagos cruises, though Disney recommends this itinerary for children eight and older. This isn’t your typical Disney cruise. It’s a small ship expedition itinerary with a hint of Disney magic in a setting fit for a fairy tale. Adventures by Disney's Galapagos itineraries span nine days and visit about 15 sites.

Best Galapagos cruises for an epic wildlife adventure of a lifetime

Fran Golden

About 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador , in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a remarkable place to visit for wildlife sightings. You can see flightless Galapagos penguins, Galapagos sea lions, giant Galapagos tortoises, marine iguanas and hundreds of other species found nowhere else on earth.

The islands are also one of the places in the world that are best explored by cruise ships.

To get close to Mother Nature in the mostly unpopulated islands, you need to get on the water — and land on islands in the company of a licensed Ecuadorian naturalist guide. Galapagos National Park tightly controls who comes in and where ships can explore.

All the ships are Ecuadorian flagged, Ecuadorian crewed and owned by Ecuadorian companies, sometimes in partnership with leading cruise companies. Excursions, often twice a day, are included in cruise fares. The sailings are year-round, and routes are always subject to change based on park control.

Related: 9 things I wish I had known before taking a Galapagos cruise

The cruise companies use various descriptors of where they go, but basically: If your ship heads north and west, you'll see more volcanic landscapes; if you go south or central you'll explore more beaches and bays. Wildlife sightings on both routes are thrilling, both above and under the sea — where you may find yourself snorkeling with sharks and sea lions.

Birdwatchers may want to do a full 14-night trip to touch every corner and add many species to their Life List. For the rest of us, a week or less can provide enough brag-worthy wildlife encounters to last a lifetime.

Choosing a ship will depend on how long you want to explore, how much you want to pay and what level of luxury you expect. It's not uncommon for travelers to combine a Galapagos cruise with land exploration in Quito, Ecuador; the Ecuadorian Amazon; or Machu Picchu in Peru. Most cruise lines offer add-on land-based itineraries.

Short cruises on La Pinta

galapagos island yacht tours

This intimate, 48-passenger yacht is operated by Metropolitan Touring and offers popular four-night and six-night itineraries. These are a good option if you are short on time.

Cabins are spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can take in the views even when getting ready for the day or relaxing in bed. Four cabins can be connected for families or friends traveling together (some sleep three). The entire ship sports a comfortably upscale ambiance, and a favorite hangout is the sun deck with its hot tub and bar.

An expedition leader along with onboard naturalists will guide you through your trip. The ship is equipped with kayaks for guest use, and a glass-bottom boat provides views for those who aren't into snorkeling.

Cost: Four-night cruises start from $5,525 per person; six-night cruises from $7,001 per person. Small-ship expedition specialist UnCruise Adventures also charters La Pinta. Seven-night packages combining one night in Guayaquil with a six-night cruise start from $9,595, available on select dates from March through November.

Hurtigruten expedition experience on Santa Cruz II

Also operated by Metropolitan Touring, the 90-passenger Santa Cruz II is an expedition ship with contemporary decor and comfortable single, double and triple cabins.

When you aren't in your cabin you might catch views from the ship's two hot tubs. Activity equipment includes snorkeling gear (with wet suits available to rent), a glass-bottom boat and kayaks, plus a top-deck fitness room.

The ship, which is operated on a carbon-neutral basis, is under charter to the well-regarded expedition company Hurtigruten for select dates each month in 2023.

Cost: Eight-night packages combining a six-night cruise with two hotel nights in Quito are available from $7,999 per person. Other options include four-night cruises from $4,551 per person and six-night itineraries from $5,735 per person.

Yachting with Quasar Expeditions' Grace

galapagos island yacht tours

Quasar Expeditions has the most historically prestigious ship in the Galapagos market. The 16-passenger Grace is a classic yacht from the 1920s that carried Princess Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco on their honeymoon in 1956 (in the Mediterranean).

Reflective of the golden age of travel, it's all about luxury on board — polished woodwork, gourmet meals and service from a crew of 10, plus two naturalist guides.

Cost: Seven-night cruises start from $8,500 per person.

Island exploration with Adventures by Disney on Galapagos Legend

Adventures by Disney offers sailings in the Galapagos on the 100-passenger Galapagos Legend in March, June-August and December.

The minimum age is 7 and the recommended age is 8 and older. The comfortable ship has the rare-in-the-Galapagos feature of a swimming pool, plus a hot tub. When Disney is on board, its trained Adventure Guides lead special Junior Adventurers activities for kids, in addition to the usual snorkeling, kayaking and glass-bottom boat rides. Select sailings invite special guest experts on board to give workshops and presentations in their area of expertise.

Cost: Fares for eight-night trips beginning with two hotel nights in Quito followed by a six-night cruise start at $7,399 (adults) and $6,699 (children). Other companies, such as Go Galapagos, offer three-night cruises on Galapagos Legend starting from $1,842 per person.

Relais & Chateaux experience on Origin and Theory

galapagos island yacht tours

Ecoventura's 20-passenger all-suite yachts, Origin and Theory, are both recognized by the prestigious Relais & Chateaux gourmet restaurant and luxury hospitality association, and intimate and luxurious exploration is their calling card.

The crew of 13 includes a French-trained chef, a concierge and two naturalists.

Pampering ensues — even for young guests who are on board select family departures during which added activities include a cultural exchange with local students. Check out the rare Galapagos publications in the library when you're not in the outdoor Jacuzzi, on the kayaks or on paddleboards.

Cost: Seven-night cruises are available from $9,450. Or, charter the entire yacht for yourself for $189,000.

Superyacht sailing with Aqua Expeditions

Aqua Expeditions is well known in luxury circles for its superyachts in the Peruvian Amazon and Asia. The company recently launched the 16-passenger, all-suite, all-inclusive Aqua Mare in the Galapagos.

The interior decor is by Italian superyacht designer François Zuretti, and the Peruvian Japanese-fusion cuisine is by chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, famed for his "jungle cuisine."

Among the spacious suites, the top Owner's Suite is 861 square feet. The Jacuzzi is big enough for six guests. The yacht is also stocked with kayaks and paddleboards for guests to use.

Cost: Seven-night cruises start from $9,450 per person. Charter the entire yacht starting at $196,000.

Galapagos with Avalon Waterways

galapagos island yacht tours

River cruise line Avalon Waterways is known for sailings in Europe and on the Mekong. However, it's also in the Galapagos, chartering the 16-passenger small ship Treasure of Galapagos for seven-night sailings from February through November 2023.

All cabins on the ship — including the 430-square-foot master suite — have balconies and are done up in welcoming, contemporary decor. The ship's design is outdoor-focused, with alfresco dining and a bar near the Jacuzzi.

Indoors is a small lounge and dining area. Wine and beer are included with meals.

Cost: Seven-night cruises (beginning with two nights in Quito) start from $5,251 per person. Other Galapagos operators sell four-night itineraries for the ship starting from $3,695 per person.

Expedition sailing with Lindblad's National Geographic Endeavour II

Top expedition company Lindblad Expeditions has been sailing in the Galapagos for more than 50 years, evident by the seasoned team of naturalists and the experiences they deliver, including exploring the sea thanks to innovative underwater equipment.

This 96-passenger ship is a spacious base camp. Passengers can explore with Zodiacs, kayaks, glass-bottom boats and stand-up paddleboards.

Select expeditions feature guest National Geographic biologists, authors and photographers, who can help you get the perfect wildlife photos. The cruises are popular with families, and a diving program is available for advanced divers.

Cost: Fares for a 10-night cruise (including two nights in Guayaquil) start from $7,710 per person. Lindblad also has a 52-passenger all-suite luxury yacht in the market, the National Geographic Islander II, with as many crew members as guests. Fares for its seven-night cruises start from $9,390 per person.

Ultraluxury experience on Silver Origin

galapagos island yacht tours

Ultraluxury line Silversea Cruises delivers everything on a silver platter on the 100-passenger Silver Origin.

Request Champagne from your butler while you lounge in the hot tub. Guests will likely also appreciate the high-tech walls that feature touch-controlled HD screens allowing you to zoom in on exclusive wildlife videos shot by drone in Galapagos National Park.

There is also the luxury of space to spread out, indoors and out, amid gorgeous contemporary furnishings. Everyone stays in a large butler-serviced suite.

In addition, the cuisine is extraordinary — the Ecuadorian executive chef even takes time to explain the local ingredients he uses. The staff includes one naturalist guide for every 10 guests.

Cost: Fares for seven-night cruises start from $12,250 per person.

All-suite megayacht cruising on Celebrity Flora

With a design similar to Silver Origin, Celebrity Cruises' Flora delivers a first-class experience.

Suites include either a step-out balcony or an "infinite veranda" created when you push a button to open the top half of a wall of glass.

Menus are crafted by a chef who helmed Michelin-starred restaurants. Personal suite attendants cater to your needs while experienced naturalists lead star-gazing sessions.

Perhaps the coolest experience on board is glamping on the top deck, overnighting under the stars in a cabana equipped with a double bed.

Cost: Fares for seven-night cruises start from $7,918. Celebrity Cruises also offers sailings on the 48-passenger Celebrity Xpedition, a small luxury ship. Seven-night cruises start at $5,119 per person. Additionally, seven-night sailings aboard the even more intimate, 16-passenger Celebrity Xploration start from $5,550 per person.

How to choose the right Galapagos tour and/or cruise

Before traveling to the Galapagos islands, you’ll need to consider which type of vacation works best for you – a cruise or a land-based vacation.

Cruise-based tours of the Galapagos Islands allow greater wildlife coverage, as you’ll be able to explore different areas of the archipelago and reach the more remote islands. On a liveaboard cruise, you’ll enjoy guided activities, including snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and “panga” boat rides, which are included in the cruise packages. In addition, all meals are served on board and are also included. However, cruises lack flexibility in that they operate based on set departure dates and fixed itineraries. These types of tours are also usually more expensive.

Land-based tours of the Galapagos archipelago are great for those who might feel too cooped up on a boat after several days, and for people who lack the “sea legs” (meaning those prone to seasickness) when on board a constantly rocking ship. Being more flexible, a land-based tour’s exploring activities and times for relaxing can be set as you see fit, and daytime “island-hopping” tours can be taken to selected islands by traveling for short times on speed boats. Nonetheless, land-based tours allow for visits to fewer islands and afford less exposure to the archipelago’s wildlife. Also, expedition activities are usually not included, nor are meals (except for breakfast).

In either case, you and your tour operator can work together to address the issues that need to be dealt with to make your dream Galapagos vacation experience come true.

Top things to do and see & do in the Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands is one of those rare destinations that offer sights, sounds, and activities that can be experienced in few if any other places on earth. But what makes any visit here truly exceptional are the many opportunities for close encounters with the extraordinary and exotic wildlife. These remote islands are home to uncounted endemic animal and plant species that exist nowhere else on the planet. From 500-pound Giant tortoises to the only species of penguin that lives north of the equator, not to mention sea lion pups who greet travelers’ toes when landing on whatever island.

Avid birders and even curious bird watchers should note that the archipelago is home to 45 species of birds that you won't see anywhere else …picture tiny Galapagos penguins and Darwin's finches. Then too, intrepid hikers and casual walkers alike will find their jaws dropping when peering across a 6-mile wide volcanic crater, hiking over a lava field that blankets an entire island, or exploring subterranean lava tubes …flashlight in hand. Not to be ignored, aquatic enthusiasts of all types will revel in sharing the ocean’s waters with vibrantly colored tropical fish, miniature Godzilla-lie Marine iguanas, and ridiculously playful sea lions. Whether snorkeling or scuba diving, sea kayaking or “panga” (dingy) riding, you’ll discover for yourself a stunning underwater world like no other.

Even for those travelers who are content with lounging on their yacht’s outdoor deck or spending quality time sunbathing on a beach next to a Land iguana, the activities in the Galapagos are never-ending (Oh, did we mention horseback riding along a desolate shore or mountain biking down the slope of some extinct volcano?). Whatever pursuits pique your interest, you’re sure to sate your cravings by exploring the Galapagos’ pristine landscapes and interacting with its magnificent creatures.

Is it safe to visit the Galapagos Islands?

When traveling through the Galapagos islands, safety should not be a major area of concern, as the vast majority of trips occur with no problems whatsoever. In fact, most safety issues are those related to protection from sunburns, the need for common-sense precautions around animals (e.g. male sea lions), universal swimming and diving safeguards, and perhaps overdoing it at the ship’s bar.

One should know that the cruise yachts and ships sailing the waters of the Galapagos are operated by trained and experienced professionals, teams of highly-skilled crew members and guides with first-aid and CPR training; and, as you’ll see, each cruise begins with a comprehensive safety briefing to familiarize you with all of the ship’s safety equipment and protocols.

Concerning crime, the few towns and villages in the Galapagos are known to be safer than those on mainland Ecuador. Still, to prevent opportunistic wrongdoing, levelheaded measures should be taken, such as keeping an eye on your belongings, not flaunting valuables, etc. – just like anywhere else in the world.

As for the big cities of mainland Ecuador, you’ll be accompanied by experienced local guides during any time spent here. In any case, travelers should avoid going out alone at night, take registered taxis, and walk in groups – just to be sure.

All of this being said, Ecuador is a relatively safe country overall, especially the Galapagos Islands. Therefore, travelers shouldn’t let the negligible potential for crime keep them from all that this amazing county has to offer.

When’s the best time to visit or take a cruise in the Galapagos Islands?

For most travelers, there really is no better or worse time to visit the islands. For a cruise, the archipelago is a great year-round destination, with no "off-season" stemming from weather conditions. Being situated right on the equator, the air temperatures vary little, ranging between 70°F and 85°F throughout the year, with a light but cooling mist ( garua ) experienced between January and April.  Note, though, that water temperatures can, in fact, vary significantly, dropping as low as the 60s from May-November, which is why most yachts provide wetsuits.

The island’s “high seasons” are during the Christmas-to-New Year’s holidays and the June-to-August summer vacation. If you can only travel during these sometimes crowded vacation periods, be sure to book your trip at least six months prior to your desired travel date, or earlier if at all possible to ensure a spot.

As for the wildlife, don’t worry about missing out on them during any given month. Except for the Waved Albatross, almost no species in the islands migrate, meaning they’ll be there in this otherworldly destination, full of life and waiting to be explored.

What should I pack for traveling to the Galapagos Islands?

When packing for a trip to the Galapagos Islands, keep in mind that you’ll be visiting not just those tropical and semi-arid islands, but also continental South America. With no direct flights to the archipelago, you’ll touch down first on the much cooler Ecuadorian mainland, where most travelers choose to spend at least a day or two in Quito so as to arrive in the Galapagos fresh and ready to hit the ground running. Dressing for the high-mountain Andean city of Quito means you’ll need to pack a few warm and water-resistant items (e.g. a jacket, long-sleeve fleece or sweater, and long pants, as well as bring along a travel umbrella).

Later, when landing in the Galapagos Islands, you’ll have to dress for warmer weather and geographies that range from sandy palm-tree-backed beaches to cactus-dotted deserts and volcanic-rock fields. In any case, for your daily land expeditions, pack a wide-brimmed sun hat or a cap with a strap, short-sleeve breathable T-shirts, long-sleeve expedition-style shirts, convertible cargo pants, comfortable walking shoes and open-toe sports sandals with non-slippery soles (these are great for “wet landings,” where you’ll have to step directly out of from your dingy into angle-deep water and sand on the beach). Don’t forget shorts, swimwear, and some reef-friendly sunscreen for your ship’s sundeck and the shore.

For the cool evenings on the water, some of the warmer clothes that you packed for the mainland will serve you well. Also, note that most yachts don’t have a formal dress code, so casual clothes are fine, even at dinner time.

Since you’ll be traveling to uninhabited (i.e. store-less) islands at times, be sure to pack plenty of memory cards or film, recharging cords, batteries, and personal toiletries. Then too, though most ships provide wetsuits and snorkeling gear, you may want to bring along your own equipment if these are special-sized items or simply preferable.

Worried about leaving anything out? Don’t fret – after you book your tour, you’ll receive a detailed packing list from Surtrek as a part of your information packet.

How to get to the Galapagos Islands?

As there are no direct international flights to the Galapagos Islands (which is an Ecuadorian province), you’ll fly into mainland Ecuador*, choosing to land either in Quito (which is the county’s capital and located in the Andes) or in the coastal Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil.

In either city, you’ll be welcomed at the airport by Surtrek representatives, who will assist you with your luggage and privately drive you to your upscale hotel.

Be aware that from the moment you touch down, throughout your stay in Ecuador and its Galapagos Islands, and until it’s time to leave, you will be accompanied by experienced bilingual Surtrek staff and representatives who will accompany all along the way. In addition, you will be provided with ground transportation throughout your stay (and accompanied during the few instances that shared transport is required), assisted with your luggage and checking in at all domestic and international airports, welcomed upon your arrival at such airports, and finally, you’ll be seen off on your flight home or onward.  So don’t worry – Surtrek’s soup-to-nuts service makes travel here a breeze.

(*) Note: Direct non-stop flights fly to both Quito and Guayaquil from several US cities, including Houston, New York, and Miami. Likewise, such flights arrive from European cities such as Madrid.

Why go to the Galapagos Islands with Surtrek?

“My wife and I were looking for the perfect vacation for our 20th anniversary and decided on the Galapagos Islands. We came across Aqua Mare online and after doing a lot of research we realized it would be the perfect vessel for this trip. This has been beyond expectations. It’s the perfect yacht; it’s gorgeous in every way. The activities we did the last 7 days have been spectacular from beginning to end. The cuisine is world-class; we could not have eaten better food this entire time. We just made the absolute perfect decision for us.”

“My husband and I just completed two weeks onboard Aqua Mare. We saw the East and West islands of the Galapagos. The trip was absolutely incredible and exceeded ALL of our expectations. The rooms are beautiful, luxurious and comfortable. The food and service are beyond 5 stars. It is, quite honestly, the most luxurious way to explore the Galapagos while experiencing fine dining, a slew of activities, and 2:1 service in a small group setting. We stayed in cabin 202 which was magnificent. We toured the other cabins onboard as well, and they were all charming and well-appointed. West Galapagos had incredible snorkeling opportunities. East Galapagos had spectacular sights like Genovesa Island. Aqua Mare has exceptionally trained guides to teach you about everything you see and experience, even on the snorkeling days. I would highly recommend the two week itinerary if you can! I promise you will not want to get off after 7 nights.”

“The Galapagos is the trip of a lifetime, truly everything is. Every time you get in the water or go on an island, there’s something extraordinary to see: a sea lion to play with or something you’ve never imagined right there in front of you. Then you come back to Aqua Mare, the most luxurious boat here. It’s incredible. So much fun and I recommend anyone to do it if they can. It’s really the trip of a lifetime.”

“My experience at Aqua Mare was wonderful. This  is an amazing boat. It was so comfortable and the atmosphere was amazing. The people, the crew created such a nice ambiance and we got to know each other. There were people from everywhere in the world and it was wonderful to meet everyone. We had such a good time.”

This Luxury Travel Company Is Launching Its First Expedition Yacht to the Galápagos — and the 7-night Journey Includes Snorkeling, Hiking, and Birdwatching

Meet the new andBeyond Galapagos Explorer, a 12-passenger, 124-foot expedition yacht.

galapagos island yacht tours

Courtesy of andBeyond

You might be familiar with andBeyond for its luxury safari lodges and camps across Africa. Or you might know it for its adventures in Asia and South America. But for the first time ever, the luxury travel company is dipping its toes into yachting with the launch of andBeyond Galapagos Explorer .

The new 124-foot yacht is due to set sail in June, taking up to 12 guests on two seven-night itineraries through the Galápagos Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a favorite destination of wildlife lovers. The first explores the volcanic archipelago's eastern islands, including Floreana, Española, and San Cristóbal, while the second targets the western islands of Isabella, Fernandina, and Santiago.

Throughout each itinerary will be ample opportunities for snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking with expert guides, not to mention wildlife viewing of some of the islands' most famous inhabitants, including blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, and sea lions. Both itineraries will also include visits to the Charles Darwin Research Station, the Fausto Llerena Breeding Centre, and the Tortoise Reserve El Chato to see giant tortoises and learn about ecological preservation in the islands.

“A uniquely biodiverse environment with the highest number of endemic species in the world, the Galapagos is a natural choice for the further expansion of our portfolio in South America," andBeyond Executive Chairman and CEO Joss Kent said in a statement obtained by Travel + Leisure . "We are absolutely thrilled to finally have the opportunity to bring our brand of responsible tourism to this precious part of the world, which the Ecuadorian government has protected from over-tourism by strictly limiting the number of operating licenses issued."

Though the off-ship experiences in the Galápagos might be the primary draw to these journeys,  onboard experience on Galapagos Explorer is nothing short of spectacular, too. Guests are accommodated in four en-suite cabins and two double-en-suite suites, each decorated with maps of the Galápagos and illustrations of local flora and fauna.

Shared spaces onboard include indoor and outdoor lounges, a dining room serving menus inspired by Ecuadorian ingredients, and a sun deck with a hot tub. And it's worth mentioning that on Galapagos Explorer journeys, all meals and beverages (including local spirits, beers, and house wines), limited laundry services, Starlink WiFi, and snorkel gear rentals (including a short wetsuit) are covered by the rate.

“We have long believed that the best way to encourage our guests to help protect the world’s wild places is for our skilled guides to help travelers not only fall in love with those places, but also to gain an understanding of the threats that they are facing," said Kent. "This is what we are aiming to do through the introduction of our luxury yacht, where two knowledgeable guides will host just twelve guests, showcasing the wonder and mystery of this exceptional destination.”

Rates for a seven-night cruise start at $10,950 per person; book now at andbeyond.com .

Horizon Galápagos Trimaran

The Horizon, formerly knows as "Camila" is a luxury trimaran designed solely to bring you the best of the islands in the highest levels of comfort yet offered. Thanks to her cutting edge design, Horizon's extraordinary trimaran hull not only makes her extremely stable even in large swells, but also more efficient. She can travel faster and further and use less fuel than traditional vessels. This means less environmental impact and greater comfort, as well as enabling longer trips than have been possible before.

The Horizon has been designed to offer the very best in elegance, style and luxury. With only 8 balcony staterooms, she accommodates a maximum of 16 passengers, giving you a more intimate Galápagos adventure. All the beautifully designed rooms feature stunning panoramic windows, a private balcony, personal air conditioning, and luxurious furnishings and finishes.

Her shared public areas are no less lavish, and the stunning dining room will see you served the finest quality local and international cuisine in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Outside there are plenty of spaces to find some privacy, or to chat with your fellow guests as you soak up the equatorial sun on the beautiful sundeck or soak in the Jacuzzi pool as you watch the stars at night.

The Horizon lets you have a real Galápagos adventure. She carries her own fleet of kayaks, so you can get closer to the mangroves and shore birds. She also carries complimentary high quality snorkeling gear, so you can get in the water and swim alongside some of the world's most iconic creatures.

Her bilingual naturalist guide is an expert in the flora, fauna and geology of the islands, and they will bring the Galápagos alive for you, taking you to the most impressive and remarkable visitor sites on the islands. A range of superb itineraries is available to suit all tastes.

Our comments: What can we say about Horizon except "stunning"? This trimaran is a game-changer for the Galápagos. Her three-hull design offers amazing stability, and those who may have been put off a small vessel luxury cruise because of sea sickness now have the perfect option. She is also faster than other cruises of her class, meaning quicker nighttime voyages and less fuel used, adding to her green credentials. Food & Drinks on board the Horizon

The food on our Galapágos Cruises is among the very best you will find in South America. Most of the on-board chefs are internationally trained and have prior experience working in the best hotels and restaurants in Ecuador and indeed around the world.

You can expect a first-class selection of food, including a good variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, locally sourced poultry and fish/seafood, rice and pasta dishes. Most boats will always include some typical Ecuadorian dishes on the menu during your cruise. If you have specific dietary requirements then these can usually be accommodated by the chef providing you have given advance notice. Please make sure you tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements you have at the time you book with us. If you leave it until you arrive at the dockside, then it may well be impossible to accommodate your needs.

Most boats serve a range of options at meal times in a relaxed buffet-style. At the first class and luxury end of the market, some boats have more formal dining where you will be served at your seat. However the atmosphere is always relaxed on board our cruises, and never stuffy or formal.

At Galapatours we love and respect the pristine ecosystems and fascinating wildlife of the Galápagos Islands. To protect the archipelago, all vessels in Galápagos must have sophisticated water filtration systems, modern, efficient engines, and strict maintenance schedules to minimize pollution. Furthermore, The Galápagos National Park authority defines exact cruising routes that dictate which ships can visit which highlights at what day and time, as well as limiting passenger numbers.

But at Galapatours we like to go even further: We voluntarily offset all the CO2 emissions of every cruise we sell - at no cost to you. You can also play your part by traveling responsibly and following our Eco Guidelines during your stay. Click here to find out more about these guidelines, our commitment to sustainable tourism, and the Galápagos National Park rules.

Horizon Galapagos Cruise

Greatest trip ever I did an 8 day/7 night cruise on the new trimaran Camilla. I went in with very high expectations and this trip exceeded them. Starting with Tom who helped me book the best cruise for my interests, to Jhosellyn (naturalist guide) who was incredibly knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, geology, and even astronomy (and a lot of fun!), and the Captain of the boat who did everything possible to give us even more opportunities to explore these incredible islands. I highly recommend this trip for anyone who has this on their bucket list -- it was better than I could have imagined. Source: https://bit.ly/2X3Ovdd

Absolutely amazing week on the Camila My wife and I recently got home from a 'bucket list' trip to the Galapagos. We decided it was a once in a lifetime trip and we wanted to do it 'right'. We had never spent this much money for a week trip, and we are happy to say: IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY. We loved the Camila. It's Galapatours` newest boat and was in great shape. Our stateroom with king bed and balcony was almost as big as our bedroom at home. The bathroom was huge, with double sinks, and a wonderful shower with lots of hot water. We only had 12 passengers on our cruise and we were served by 12 staff/crew. Like how often do you get a 1 to 1 ratio on a cruise? Cudos to our Nature Guide/Cruise Guide Daniel and our cruise host Deena. You are both incredible people and we LOVED your customer service ethic. You took care of every need. Deena, a special thanks for our romantic dinner! It is a memorable night! Food was wonderful. Got to snorkel all but one day. Safety is job one. We loved our fellow cruisers who have become lifelong friends. Source: https://bit.ly/2X3Ovdd

Our opinion

The premier trimaran in the Galapagos Sustainability: Camila's entire operation has been included in the offsets, from the fuel used by the engines on board the trimaran to the bus rides her crew and guides take to work. Aboard Camila, rest assured that from arrival in the Galapagos Islands to the point of departure, the impact of your carbon footprint will be a net zero. Common Areas: A highlight of the Galapagos Camila is her ample deck space for sunning, wildlife viewing and al fresco dining. Relax on the Sun Deck in the elevated Jacuzzi following a long active day on this adventure cruise. Indoors, relax in the luxurious lounge, separated from the dining room. In the dining room, enjoy fine regional cuisine while taking in scenic views. Crew and guides include the experienced captain, a bilingual Galapagos National Park naturalist guide, a cruise manager and 10 other crew members. Activities Aboard Camila: Snorkeling gear and wetsuits are available for use aboard Camila, as are kayaks for further exploring the Galapagos Islands up close, off ship. Daily excursions with naturalist guides include hikes to view points and beaches.

Ocean Spray

The Ocean Spray is one of the most impressive vessels you can board for your Galápagos cruising adventure. Built in 2011, this mega-catamaran is one of the fastest, most stable boats in the region and will whisk you from island to island with speed and great style. The friendly crew attends to your every need with warmth and dedication, and they make sure you have the right balance of unforgettable excursions and shameless relaxation. This may be a wonderful new boat, but it boasts some of the most experienced crew in the islands. Captain Pedro has over 45 years experience, with hotel manager Eduardo only just behind. Eduardo runs a beautiful operation with some nice touches. For example, 2 dinners on each trip will be served as an outdoor barbecue with cocktails to enjoy. For connoisseurs, there are some excellent Chilean and Argentinian wines available for between $40 and $60 - very reasonable for the quality. Stunning accommodation The Ocean Spray boasts some of the best suites in the Galápagos. Her large size means that every guest suite has its own private balcony, large and opulent en suite bathroom and enormous panoramic windows. Other luxurious touches we enjoy include fully carpeted bedrooms, luxury bed linens and toiletries and beautiful wood finishes throughout. Good to know: While the downstairs cabins can be either separated bed which can be joined to form a seemsless, queen-sized matress, the upstairs suites are full-blown king-sized beds that cannot be separated. A superb bonus for solo travelers: Ocean Spray has a single cabin that does not incur any additional single supplement. The communal areas on board are no less extravagant than the suites. There is a huge sun deck with a jacuzzi tub - perfect for sun-worshiping or star gazing. The boat’s lounge is simply stunning, and the decor, ambiance, and comfort puts many luxury hotels to shame. The intimate dining area serves as the perfect backdrop for some superb meals from our excellent chefs who offer a wide range of local and international cuisine using the freshest ingredients - seafood is always a specialty! Expert crew and guides Captain Pedro is one of the most experienced skippers in the region with over 45 years at sea. Making sure everything runs smoothly is Quality Control Manager Eduardo, who can also boast over 40 years experience in his field. Our bilingual guides help you to make the very most of your Galápagos experience. The communal lounge area is used to deliver fascinating introductions to the islands and to your excursions, and guides are always on hand to answer questions and give information. They really are a superb resource and it’s obvious they relish sharing their knowledge and love of the islands. The relaxing atmosphere of Ocean Spray is the perfect place to come back to and share your memories of the day, winding down in total comfort. Our Comments This large, fast boat never fails to impress us. The surroundings are superb and the highly experienced crew can’t ever do enough for you. We particularly like the stunning communal lounge saloon, and the view of the stars from the sun deck jacuzzi tub is one of the things you can’t forget. Her no-supplement single cabin also makes this THE boat for solo travelers to Galápagos.

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS Historical Background

In geological terms, the Galapagos are relatively young volcanic islands and the Name “Galapagos” comes from the Spanish word “galapago”: a riding saddle. The term was coined by the first visitors when they saw the giant tortoises’ shells resemble to a saddle shape, and therefore it was used to name the tortoises and the islands as well.

On top of a virginal and unique environment, the islands also have a captivating human history because The Bishop of Panama, Tomas de Berlanga, was the first person on the islands in 1535. He arrived after his ship sailed from his country of origin towards Peru.

Later on, English whalers also arrived at the islands, in consecuence some of the islands received English names. Later on, in 1832, the islands became part of Ecuador.

The well-known English Naturalist, Charles Darwin, visited the Galapagos Island for the first time in 1835 on board of the Beagle. He also observed and recorded the magnificent adaptations the species suffered on every island, which became the basis of his theory of Natural Selection on his famed book “The Origin of the Species”.

Two knowledgeable guides will join each trip, helping travelers learn about this exceptional destination and the challenges it is facing. Comprising 18 main islands, three smaller islands, and 107 rocks and islets, the Galápagos is home to a remarkable variety of flora and fauna, with many species found nowhere else on Earth. Highlights include the Galápagos giant tortoise, marine iguana, and blue-footed booby.

“We have long believed that the best way to encourage our guests to help protect the world’s wild places is for our skilled guides to help travelers not only fall in love with those places, but also to gain an understanding of the threats that they are facing,” Kent adds.

Pioneers of responsible tourism, andBeyond is planning to implement projects that support the land and wildlife of the Galápagos. It is also hoping to train or upskill residents and spotlight the local culture. That means you can feel extra good while cruising the Pacific Ocean.

AndBeyond Galapagos Explorer will set sail on June 17. Rates for the seven-night cruises start at $10,950 per person, based on double occupancy. For more information or to book, contact andBeyond or your preferred travel provider.

How You Know Your Booking The Best Galapagos Boat Tour

When choosing a Galapagos boat tour company, there are key criteria that should be kept in mind. Some things to consider are;

  • Choose someone you can trust - when spending money that you have worked hard to earn, it is important to trust that the tour company is going to deliver what they are offering to the quality that you would expect. Take some time to get to know the tour company and don’t rush into a decision.
  • You get what you pay for - keep in mind that quality doesn’t usually come cheap. A trip to the Galapagos islands is often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so spending extra to ensure your vacation is top quality is usually worth it.
  • How knowledgeable is the guide? - When booking a Galapagos boat tour , you expect the crew and guide to be full of passion and experience. They need to be confident and really care about the islands and the information that they are telling you.
  • Research the company - learn about the company; how long they have been in the industry, what is written in previous customer’s reviews, what awards they may have won, and so on. If a company is consistently receiving good testimonials, they are generally a good choice.
  • How personal is the tour? - Small group boat tours create more intimate and personal experiences and enable you to connect with the guide, other guests, and the environment.

Galapagos Islands Travel Guide: How To Tour The Hotspot On A Luxury Yacht & Live-Aboard

L ocated 600 miles away from the Ecuadorian coastline, the remote, volcanic Galápagos archipelago is often called a living laboratory of evolution. As Charles Darwin discovered nearly 200 years ago, natural oddities like cormorants that forgot how to fly and iguanas that learned how to swim have successfully adapted to their individual — and often inhospitable — habitats in order to thrive in a place where islands are constantly eroding and expanding. Here, what doesn’t kill you makes you more diverse. You might think such an environment would prove harsh for human visitors (and historically , it has). But we, too, have learned to adapt — thanks to a little help from luxury expedition yachts .

In the case of Ecoventura ’s vessels, the only ones in the Galápagos that are members of Relais & Châteaux, travelers can enjoy the lowest guest-per-guide ratio in the islands, hotel-worthy amenities f, and a decadent, sustainable menu with local dishes. Because the Galápagos are one of the largest marine reserves in the world, touring the park’s riches by sea is undoubtedly the way to go. Sailing with Ecoventura also offers you the chance to go deeper — literally. Certified scuba divers can extend their trip on the company’s sophisticated live-aboard Galápagos Sky , which anchors at the bucket list dive sites of Darwin and Wolf, considered by many to be among the best in the world for their schooling hammerheads and other prolific pelagic life. This is what it was like to spend two weeks cruising around paradise.

Exploring A Priceless Natural Treasure

With land-based excursions limited to the five islands that can be reached within one day, boat-based routes provide travelers the opportunity to uncover the most remote and exclusive parts of the Galápagos, where few humans have ever set foot and every moment of isolation feels like a true privilege. On Ecoventura, alternating itineraries last eight nights and seven days, with a choice of the younger, volcanically active islands in the west or the older, eroded islands in the east. Not only are these cruises the more luxurious option, it’s the best choice for the environment; routes are strictly dictated by Galápagos National Park officials to mitigate crowding and environmental stress, and Ecoventura is especially renowned for its numerous sustainable certifications.

On board the intimate 20-passenger Evolve, Ecoventura’s newest vessel, I set sail from San Cristóbal through the beaches and bays of the wondrous eastern islands and enjoyed a week of unforgettable experiences. At Floreana, I watched Galápagos green sea turtles mating in the surf and rode a panga (or zodiac) alongside a flock of flamingos. On Santa Cruz, I visited the Charles Darwin Research Station , where giant tortoise hatchlings are reared from birth before being repatriated to their native islands. At Bartolomé, I snorkeled with Galápagos penguins, the only species found north of the Equator. On North Seymour, I never quite knew where to look, as blue-footed boobies and frigates simultaneously flaunted their brightly-colored feet and scarlet gular pouches, respectively, trying to attract mates. In the Galápagos, wildlife is constantly putting on a show.

When I had to pull myself away, Evolve was the best possible place to rest and recharge. Equipped with an outdoor rain shower, beds worthy of a five-star resort, and a jacuzzi, the entire vessel felt spa-like, and it was easy to make myself at home (if my home was a glamorous yacht, that is). Each evening I had a ritual of settling in on the deck with a spritz to watch an epic sunset before heading down to the dining room for a five-course plated dinner featuring local specialties like pancetta in a guava and pineapple BBQ sauce and Galápagos prawns poached in citrus butter. By the time the first half of my trip had ended, I had seen and done more than on 99% of my vacations, while also managing to totally spoil myself.

Diving Into Adventure At Darwin, Wolf, & Beyond

Your typical dive boat is more about function than form — but scuba has its indulgent moments, too. On the Galápagos Sky, a 16-passenger yacht, divers swim in the shadow of giant manta rays, go fin-to-fin with impish sea lions, and explore the eroded, subsurface volcanoes of Darwin and Wolf where whale sharks migrate every year; all without leaving creature comforts like turn-down service, a full-service bar, Apple TVs, and made-to-order omelets.

Our cozy cabins were meticulously cleaned up in between dives (a lifesaver when you’re in and out of swimsuits and tracking water everywhere) and coffee delivered to us with the early morning wakeup call, exactly the way we requested it. But the real magic happened on the dive deck, where the entire crew pitched in to prep our gear, dress us, and wash everything after welcoming us back. (As a fellow passenger put it, “You know it’s good service when the captain himself helps you with your wetsuit.”) Every dive ended with a warm outdoor shower, a cup of tea or cinnamon hot chocolate, a homemade snack, a fresh towel wrapped around you, and best of all, lively conversation with everyone onboard about what we had spotted beneath the waves.

Naturally, a top scuba live-aboard should be filled with the greatest extravagance of all: life-changing, soul-shaking diving. Our brilliant instructors gifted us with 18 dives around the archipelago, focusing on the little-visited outlying islands of Darwin and Wolf where a confluence of nutrient-rich, sweeping currents deliver breathless encounters with pelagic megafauna. Clinging to underwater boulders, we marveled as a school of nearly 100 hammerheads — some heavily pregnant — gently undulated past us. Enormous, shimmering bait balls became mazes that we gently finned through. During safety stops, we played with sea lions and dolphins. At the western island of Fernandina, we dove with endemic marine iguanas — the world’s only seagoing lizards — as they fiercely clung to rocks foraging on algae.

Each dive was totally unique, and yet each time we emerged more in awe of — and in love with — this wild stretch of pristine ocean.
