This is the stunning new Pininfarina Pura Vision, a luxury electric land yacht

Pininfarina's follow-up to the Battista is this bonkers four-seat luxury EV with rear-hinged doors and much power

Pininfarina Pura Vision electric SUV revealed 2023

In Seventies Top Trumps  land, Pininfarina was one of the kings. As well as clothing virtually every major Ferrari from 1951 until the Prancing Horse took its design destiny in-house in 2011, these guys regularly smashed it out of the park when it came to concept cars. Case in point: the Modulo , which rebodied a Ferrari 512 S endurance racing car as a flying saucer. To this day, it remains the show car to end all show cars, a four-wheeled WTF (not least because using a 512 S as a donor car is majorly punchy).

Now meet the Pura Vision, the follow-up to the Pininfarina Battista . At this point we must remind you that these are the products of Automobili Pininfarina, which is a separate entity to the original carrozzeria . It's effectively a start-up whose goal is to be the world’s leading purveyor of luxury electric cars. Since 2018, a team of 116 has been building and refining the Battista 1,876bhp hypercar, while new CEO Paolo Dellachà, formerly chief product and engineering officer, insists the company’s financials are increasingly robust.

We like the Battista a lot, but the Pura Vision is something else altogether. Car designers will give you chapter and verse on the importance of stance and proportion, but this thing gleefully rips the rule book to shreds. Look how shallow the glasshouse is compared to the body. Check out the Pura Vision’s floating roof. Stare if you dare into its minimalist face and notice the way the cockpit sits within the body. It even has preposterous front and rear ‘suicide’ doors.

It’s also huge, almost six metres long, two metres wide and 1.7m tall, and has the imperious bearing of an automotive super yacht. The nautical parallel is encouraged by design boss Dave Amantea, who says the Pura Vision looks especially like a boat from above. Dave, it should be noted, is also one of the world’s most enthusiastic human beings.

Volkswagen is preparing a teeny £17k electric car for 2027

“The first iteration dates back to 2018. A 40 per cent scale model was presented in 2019, and we wanted to gather, not suggestions as such, but the vibes and understanding of what our customers wanted,” he explains. “We have to bring the customer to the centre of our project. Remember, these guys own everything. They’re probably getting a little bored because they can buy anything they want. This is the most difficult segment to make ‘wow!’ to the people.”

This surely gives Automobili Pininfarina scope, if not total carte blanche, to go a bit nuts. They have delivered. Although its production targets are more ambitious for the quasi-SUV than the Battista – think into the thousands rather than 150 – imagine you’re a cash rich tech bro (or sister) on the hunt for something electrified but outrageous. The Pura Vision manages to look very Silicon Valley while channelling Pininfarina’s history. The lounge doors are a nod to 1956’s Lancia Florida, the roof – currently being co-developed with a Swiss specialist – echoes the Modulo, and the body section where the doors meet is a conscious link to the Battista. A central ‘biscotto’ supports the curved single-piece side windows, which are integral to the doors. The headlights are hidden and use L.E.S.S nanofibre technology; the fibres measure less than one millimetre thick.

It sits on 23 inch wheels, the minimum diameter on a vehicle with proportions as bonkers as these, its tyres wearing an elegant white pinstripe. The rear tapers in beautifully, another aspect best appreciated from above – a vantage point Dave the designer actively encourages. A ring of anodised aluminium runs around the car’s beltline.

Nor is it overcooked. Amantea says that simplicity underpins everything, partly because the purer the surfaces the greater the contrast that can be achieved when clients start spending big in the bespoke department. The body on the show car is finished in Bianco Sestriere Gloss paint, with powerful contrasting exposed carbon fibre on the body’s lower elements.

“Details are vital. You need the unexpected element that pops out to give you the emotion,” Amantea says. “You have to amaze the customer, balance the classic effect with the futurism. The idea of finding beauty in imperfection, it’s in our bones. It’s about finding the perfect emotion not the perfect alignment of line.”

The interior is equally fabulous, contains four ‘floating’ captain’s chairs, and aims for an airier sensation than the exterior suggests. The central display rises into view when needed, disappears out of view when not. Each head-rest has a speaker to create individual sound zones. Charcoal leather on the dashboard and door tops creates an ‘accent band’ that mirrors the aluminium one on the outside. The centre console, upper seatbacks and headlining combine 30 per cent wool and 70 per cent recycled polyester. There’s a fridge hidden between the rear seats.

Automobili Pininfarina calls the Pura Vision an ‘e-LUV’ – electric luxury utility vehicle – an abbreviation that might get lost in translation anywhere within the M62. We love it all the same, for its colossal ambition and emotive cab-rear design. No news yet on what platform it might use or the extent of its electric powertrain. A deal is being done on the former, with the latter being shared with the Battista. So it will have the performance to back up its presence.

The biggest and most flamboyant American cars

We reveal the 21 longest american cars from the ‘land yacht’ era of the 1960s through to the early 1980s.

John Redfern

  • 25 muscle cars that aren’t American
  • State of independence: American cars that broke the mould

1963 Dodge Custom 880 – 214.8 inches / 5.45 metres

Our first port of call is Dodge’s short-lived Custom 880. Although still a large vehicle by modern standards, the era of the land yachts was one where size really did matter. Under pressure to compete with Chevrolet, Dodge rushed out its own version of the Chrysler Newport. A 361-cubic inch (5.9-litre) V8 engine with 265hp was standard, with a 383ci (6.3-litre) 305hp V8 optional. It wasn’t enough, and the 880 was dead in the water by 1965.

1975 Dodge Charger SE – 216 inches / 5.48 metres

Most people immediately think ‘muscle car’ when the name Charger is mentioned. But by 1975, an icon of the horsepower wars was little more than a jaded luxury coupe. It may have had sumptuous 24-ounce shagpile carpeting inside, but the square exterior styling made it a nightmare for the NASCAR teams forced to use it on-track. Dodge only managed to sell 31,000 examples in 1975.

1970 Ford LTD – 216.1 inches / 5.49 metres

Between 1969 and 1978, Ford sold 7.75 million examples of the second-generation LTD and its Mercury sisters. It was also the biggest car offered by the Blue Oval during its lifetime. Styling for the 1970 model year included a grille inspired by the Thunderbird, combined with funky hidden headlights. Engine choices ranged from a big 302-cubic inch (4.9-litre) V8, through to a really big 429ci (7.0) V8.

1971 Buick Riviera – 217.4 inches / 5.52 metres

Big and bold was the look for the third-generation Buick Riviera, launched in 1971. A giant ‘boat tail’ rear end seems apt for a land yacht, but the radical styling proved unsuccessful with buyers. A ‘Full-Flo’ ventilation system, with a habit of sucking exhaust fumes and rain water into the cabin, probably didn’t endear the Rivera to customers either. More impressive was the standard-fit ‘MaxTrac’ traction control for the 455-cubic inch (7.5-litre) V8 engine.

1969 Dodge Polara – 220.8 inches / 5.61 metres

Now we’re getting into the realm of serious yachting as we sail across the 220-inch longitude. Adopting Dodge’s ‘fuselage’ styling concept, the 1969 Polara was available in five different body styles. Engine choices were all V8s, ranging from a modest 230hp 381-cubic inch (6.2-litre) to the thumping 440-ci (6.5-litre) Magnum with 375hp and 480lb ft of torque. The sales brochure boasted of hidden windshield wipers, and carpets so plush you’d want to take your shoes off to drive.

1959 Chrysler New Yorker Town & Country Wagon – 220.9 inches / 5.61 metres

It might be from an earlier decade than the others on our list, and it also happens to be an estate. But the ’59 Town & Country is still very much a land yacht. Standard-fit was the ‘Golden Lion’ 413-cubic inch (6.77-litre) V8 engine, with 350hp and a push-button three-speed automatic transmission. Optional extras included the ‘Mirrormatic’ electrically dimming rear-view mirror. Strange to think you often need to pay extra for an automatic dimming mirror on a new car almost six decades later.

1980 Plymouth Gran Fury – 221.5 inches / 5.62 metres

For a significant period of its life, the Plymouth Gran Fury existed to satisfy the demands of the fleet market, and this lifeline kept it alive. It may have been downsized for 1980, but this is still a huge vehicle. Police chiefs loved them, with a special package offered to boost the 360-cubic inch (5.9-litre) V8 engine to a ‘massive’ 195hp. By 1980, the land yacht era had capsized, and Plymouth ditched the Gran Fury part-way through 1981.

1973 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe – 221.9 inches / 5.64 metres

Chevrolet’s marketing pitch for 1973 sounded more like a political campaign speech, rather than a way to sell cars. It was about ‘building a better way to see America’ and what could be better than seeing it from the vinyl and woodgrain interior of your Impala? Powering you across the country was a standard 145hp ‘Turbo Fire’ 350-cubic inch (5.7-litre) V8. But, if you really wanted to make progress, you could pick the optional 455-ci (7.5-litre) ‘Turbo Jet’ V8 with 245hp. That might have required several more stops for gas, though.

1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible – 224.1 inches / 5.69 metres

This is decadence! In 1976 Cadillac was very keen to stress that the Eldorado was the last American convertible. Features such as automatic climate control and plush six-way adjustable leather seats pushed the Eldorado’s weight to 5,153lb (2,337kg). Thankfully, propulsion came from an extravagant 500-cubic inch (8.2-litre) V8, even if all that displacement could only generate 235hp. Owners might have been even more grateful for the standard ventilated disc brakes.

1976 Ford Thunderbird – 225.7 inches / 5.73 metres

Can you imagine how long polishing all the chrome on the Thunderbird’s front bumper would take? And that’s before you even get to the grille, the headlight surrounds, wing mirrors, and finally, the rear bumper. All that shine meant the Thunderbird weighed in at over 5,000lb (2,268kg). Power came courtesy of a 460-cubic inch (7.7-litre) V8, connected to a ‘Cruise-O-Matic’ transmission. An eight-track tape player was a $382 option, whilst the distinctive ‘Lipstick’ colour scheme added $546 to the $7,790 list price.

1977 Dodge Royal Monaco – 225.7 inches / 5.73 metres

If you were the kind of person who liked traditional value, combined with an added touch of luxury, then the Royal Monaco was for you. Slide around on the standard vinyl-upholstered seats, revel at the choice of two ashtrays in both the front and rear passenger compartments, and impress people with your hidden headlights. If you’re really feeling flush, perhaps you might go for the option of a locking gas cap, or the unmitigated luxury of an electric digital clock.

1978 Ford Country Squire – 225.7 inches / 5.73 metres

Nothing says ‘premium’ like slapping simulated woodgrain to the side of a station wagon. From 1951 to 1991, Ford’s full-size estate featured imitation timber trim. The 1978 Country Squire would be a final flourish for outlandish size, as the following year saw a smaller seventh-generation car. But in 1978, tipping the scales at some 4,881lb (2,214kg) meant even the largest engine option of the 460-cubic inch (7.5-litre) V8 could only push the Squire to a maximum speed of 111mph. Still, at least you wouldn’t have to worry about varnishing that wood.

1970 Buick Electra 225 – 225.8 inches / 5.74 metres

It becomes evident how important size was in the land yacht era, when manufacturers were willing to incorporate length into a model name. Between 1959 and 1969, the length of the Electra had fluctuated, but for 1970 it returned to that eponymous measurement. Also new for 1970 was a 455-cubic inch (7.5-litre) V8 with an impressive 370hp and 510lb ft. It may have been vast, but the Electra 225 was certainly no slouch, making it one of the raciest yachts on our list.

1972 Lincoln Continental Mark IV – 228.1 inches / 5.79 metres

Aside from the Ford Thunderbird, the Lincoln Continental range of the 1970s is perhaps the best example of the personal luxury coupe genre. For those customers wanting to go completely overboard, Lincoln offered a range of designer special editions. Created by Bill Blass, Gucci, Givenchy, and Cartier, each car came with a bespoke colour scheme, plus a gold-plated plaque on the dashboard. The latter could even be engraved with the owner’s name, just in case you forgot who you were.

1970 Imperial Crown – 229.7 inches / 5.83 metres

Chrysler had used the Imperial name since the 1920s, but between 1955 and 1975 it created a standalone marque to rival Cadillac and Lincoln. Life was tough for the third-generation range of Imperials, as being based on Chrysler platforms and bodyshells placed them at a disadvantage versus other luxury brands. Instead, the Imperial had to compete on features like a standard 440-cubic inch (7.2-litre) V8 engine with 350hp, or bench seating described as being like a sumptuous sofa – finished in cloth and vinyl.

1975 Cadillac Coupe de Ville – 230.7 inches / 5.86 metres

Across the 230-inch threshold we sail, and into what we can probably title as the ‘super yacht’ category. These next six cars are truly vast, and the de Ville is a perfect expression of the self-indulgence available. Interiors were offered in both leather or patterned velour, while the exterior featured a huge vinyl roof and cornering lights to help steer your ship. Airbags for the driver and passenger were an option, as was traction control and, of course, whitewall striped tyres.

1978 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham – 231 inches / 5.88 metres

By the late 1970s, land yachts like the New Yorker were bigger than disco music. But 1978 would be the final year of the Chrysler ‘C-body’ platform that saw service in many of the full-size machines on our list. A 400-cubic inch (6.6-litre) V8 came as standard, unless you happened to live in California or high-altitude states ,where the smaller and cleaner 360-ci (5.9-litre) V8 was mandatory. On the options list was a AM/FM stereo with a search function operated by a foot switch, and even a CB radio.

1974 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight LS – 232.4 inches / 5.90 metres

Another giant of the Chrysler ‘C-body’ era was the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight. Before the marque was made to walk the plank in 2004, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American car brand. The glory days came in the 1970s, and with cars like the colossal 1974 Ninety-Eight it’s not hard to see why. Plus, any car with a 455-cubic inch (7.5-litre) V8 engine named ‘Rocket’ gains serious credibility. The record length for ’74 models came from the need to incorporate federally mandated 5mph bumpers into the already vast design.

1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V – 233 inches / 5.92 metres

If you thought the Mark IV Continental was whale-sized, then we’re going to need a bigger boat for the Mark V. With almost a further five inches in length, the Mark V was even more opulent and ostentatious. A vinyl roof was standard for 1979, as were the round ‘opera’ windows, and a Cartier-logoed clock. For true glitz, buyers could opt for The Collector Series, which was promoted by Tom Selleck. Gold-toned grille inserts, a crystal-like hood ornament, and acres of padded vinyl proved you were ready to celebrate the final year before downsizing would claim another victim.

1975 Buick Electra 225 – 233.7 inches / 5.96 metres

Having strayed a long way from the original 225 inches, by 1975 the Electra was now one of the biggest monsters roaming the turnpike. According to Buick, the 225 was for those who wanted to drive a luxury car without being pretentious. Although the promotional photo, taken outside a sprawling mansion, somewhat begs to differ, while interior options included plush patterned velour upholstery. Sadly, the steadfast 455-ci (7.5-litre) engine was now smothered by emissions and fuel-saving changes, producing just 205hp.

1973 Imperial LeBaron – 235.3 inches / 5.98 metres

This is it, the end of our epic voyage. It means we’ve come to the biggest land yacht, and one of the longest post-war American production cars, period. Federally mandated bumpers were responsible for making the LeBaron even lengthier in 1973, adding an extra 5.8-inches to its already imposing dimensions. After 1973, the Imperial brand would slip away, finally being cast adrift for good in 1975. Oil embargos and emissions regulations would be the factors that sunk the Imperial, and would do the same for the rest of the land yacht fleet by the early 1980s.

The Land Yacht Is Here to Stay: How Toyota Flexed With the 2024 Grand Highlander

For some parents, minivan ownership requires handing over their cool cards and surrendering to a cringe-worthy few years of carting the kids around in a cliché. Still, the thought of pulling the trigger on a massive gas-guzzling SUV sends equally unpleasant shivers down their spines. It’s a paradox, but one that isn’t without a solution, thanks to Toyota. For buyers looking to retain their pre-kid image without sacrificing practicality, consider the all-new 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander .

A new entrant into the large SUV category, the Grand Highlander appropriates its best-selling sibling’s name but ventures into an entirely different breed of family ute. Toyota’s newest land yacht replaces the bulky Sequoia with a family and climate-friendly version that’s long on style. Infused with Toyota’s industry-leading hybrid powertrain technology, the Grand Highlander ekes out a spot in the lineup without detracting from the Japanese automaker’s “Beyond Zero” carbon-neutral corporate goal.

The Grand Highlander isn’t just another large SUV; it’s an ambassador of change that lights a path forward for manufacturers to continue satisfying overwhelming consumer demand for large SUVs without the opposing force of emissions reduction. With the most fuel-efficient Grand Highlander offering a combined 36 MPG of fuel economy, buyers can feel comfortable going big without leaving a massive carbon footprint in their wake. That’s good news for the industry since extra space still sits high on the list for busy families.

The black interior and dash of a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander is shown.

Why Bigger Is Still Better for Families

Large SUVs have shown remarkable resilience in the face of increasing calls for more fuel-efficient alternative fuel vehicles, but exactly which features keep buyers preferring a massive SUV over a full-size three-row alternative or a minivan? Perhaps it’s the extra dose of cool, the available luxury trims and features, or the baked-in performance and capability features that smaller utes and minivans simply can’t match. Whatever the secret sauce, sales remain brisk.

Automotive sales tracker carsalesbase.com reports that nearly all large SUV models experienced a unit-sale increase in 2022, with domestic nameplates leading the category. Sales of the GMC Yukon increased by 15% in 2022. The Chevy Suburban was not far behind, with an 11% increase. Overall, large SUVs represented 3.4% of all vehicles sold in 2022, an increase over the previous year. Though Toyota hasn’t fared well in the category due to the Sequoia’s dated architecture, gas-guzzling powertrain, and less-than-stellar reviews, the popular Japanese automaker is locked and loaded to eclipse the aging competition with the all-new Grand Highlander.

The sales figures are no surprise since families have consistently demanded more interior space and cargo -hauling capability for years. What has surprised automakers is the segment’s younger age demographic. Enter millennials, who have aged into parenting with strong preferences and a more educated and intentional car-buying mindset. According to a 2017 USA Today article, more than one-third of large SUV buyers are 35 to 44 years old.

Despite escalating concerns about climate change and the effects of carbon emissions on the planet, it’s apparent that families are still prioritizing space and utility. With the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, Toyota is poised to meet that growing demand without sacrificing its long-term plan to achieve carbon neutrality and a zero-emissions fleet. Meanwhile, the popular Chevy Tahoe caps its fuel economy ratings at 28 MPG when equipped with a high-cost diesel engine.

Is Guilt-Free Family Cruising Possible?

Remember the Hummer? Made famous by uber celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, these 8,500-pound behemoths gravitated from the battlefield to the valet line in the early aughts, and though their excessive weight excluded them from the EPA’s MPG rating system, estimated fuel economy ratings hovered at a dismal 11 MPG. In 2006, at the height of the massive SUV’s reign, annual sales totaled more than 70,000; a steep decline followed until sales dwindled to under 4,000 in 2010 before the Hummer’s 2011 discontinuation.

Many automotive insiders blame the Hummer for the large SUV’s lingering social stigma. Stained by the Hummer’s blatant cult-like appeal among Hollywood’s glitterati, the large SUV category bore the brunt of America’s distaste for excess. Some argue that the category still carries the weight of its forebearer’s sins. Thus, automakers faced a vexing hurdle; how to appeal to size-craving, anti-minivan families without tarnishing the category further.

With the 2024 Grand Highlander’s advanced hybrid technology , Toyota sets the category on a different path. By reducing emissions and increasing fuel efficiency, the Grand Highlander’s value proposition allows families to benefit from an oversized SUV while remaining environmentally conscious. Vehicles like the Grand Highlander lend credibility to the large SUV segment at exactly the right time and offer an efficient gas-powered solution during the industry’s rocky transition to electrification.

The Grand Highlander comes with three available powertrains: a 265-hp gas engine, a hybrid that generates 245 hp, and a zesty 362-hp Hybrid MAX that vaults from zero to sixty in just 6.3 seconds and provides 5,000 lbs of towing capability. The three powertrains offer 24, 36, and 27 MPG combined, giving buyers free rein to strike the right balance between fuel efficiency and performance. The standard Drive Modes, Sport, Eco, and Normal, included with all three options, give drivers even more freedom to dial in the right performance-to-economy mix. Optional all-wheel drive reduces fuel economy somewhat, but the difference is minimal.

A blue 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Platinum Hybrid is shown parked near an ocean.

Toyota Strikes First: Fusing Space and Efficiency

Fuel efficiency isn’t the only flavor of efficiency on most families’ minds when considering which vehicle to purchase; time economy also matters . Today’s modern families often grapple with dizzying schedules, from errands, work, and carpools to sports and school events, road trips, and long lists of home improvement projects. Unfortunately for these families, it’s not always possible to live their values (e.g., reducing one’s carbon footprint) alongside the metric ton of responsibilities they face every day.

Toyota understands that many families simply don’t have the luxury of spending months researching alternatives, nor can they sacrifice space and utility for the greater good. Defaulting to a gas-guzzling large SUV is often a decision of need, especially for larger families with more than two children. Here, Toyota and Grand Highlander buyers strike gold. In a world of complexity and schedule overload, choosing Toyota’s newest land yacht is akin to hitting the ‘easy’ button.

From the outside, the Grand Highlander looks a lot like the competition, but slide into the driver’s seat or the cavernous third row, and the differences are vast. Not only is the Grand Highlander spacious: it is also intelligently designed to optimize every crevice, nook, and contour. With a max cargo capacity of 97.5 cu.ft., the Grand Highlander transforms into the perfect weekend project companion. With a full load of passengers, the seven USB-C ports accessible from every seat demonstrate the occupant-friendly cabin layout.

It’s the myriad of small but well-thought-out extras that set the Grand Highlander apart. By offering families an SUV that keeps everyone safe, comfortable, fully charged, and entertained, Toyota has elevated the Grand Highlander to something more than just transportation. Yes, the Grand Highlander is more of a partner in crime, there to streamline family logistics with versatility and leveled-up comfort.

Large on Space, Easy on the Planet: Changing the Land Yacht Calculus

As the industry enters a new era of electrification and carbon-neutral engineering innovation, the large SUV has no choice but to evolve. Once notoriously thirsty for fossil fuels that churned puffs of noxious carbon emissions into the earth’s atmosphere, these massive people movers are experiencing a more sustainable renaissance. Toyota is pioneering the trend, and in the process, the legendary automaker proves that size and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.

The 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, with its advanced hybrid powertrains, embodies Toyota’s dedication to a cleaner planet, as well as its “Beyond Zero” future. Does a world exist where passenger vehicles achieve net zero emissions and positively impact our planet? For the answer, it might be wise to pay close attention to Toyota.

12 Pontiac Models With Impressive Resale Values

The rarest ford production car ever, why it’s worth waiting for the tesla model y juniper.

Back when roads used to be calm as the sea back in the '60s and '70s, powerful muscle cars roared across the tarmac , turning heads wherever they went. However, there were also land yachts, which were plush, luxurious, and gigantic cars that ran on V8 engines. These full-size luxury cars were some of the finest examples of automotive craftsmanship , with their phenomenally luxurious cabins and massive bodies. Land yachts glided over the road quite comfortably, much like boats on the water. Today, brands like Lincoln and Rolls-Royce continue to craft these amazing pieces of engineering and design.

While every land yacht came with great interiors and plenty of luxury, several across history stood out. Be it due to some special feature they had or just how they looked, some land yachts became more special than the rest, raising the cool factor. In that vein, take a look at 10 of the coolest land yacht cars ever made.

10 Cadillac Eldorado (1971)

Very big and very comfortable, the Cadillac Eldorado was the quintessential land yacht . After all, an old-school Cadillac hit the mark when it came to being huge and luxurious. The Eldorado nameplate was the top end of the brand's rather luxurious lineup, and the 1971 model, in its 9th generation, was the peak of the Eldorado.

A massive 2-door luxury beast that came with the best luxuries and top-of-the-line features at the time, the supreme luxury Eldorado rode on a huge 500 cu-in V8 engine. Churning out 345 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, it was never short on power either.

9 Buick Riviera (1973)

The Riviera is one of the most renowned models from Buick. Buick as a brand stood for great luxury and style, and the Riviera embodied it the best . In its third generation from 1971 to 1973, the Riviera came with a beautiful boat-tail design.

A proper luxury saloon through and through, the Riviera's cabin was one of the most luxurious at the time. The seats were far more comfortable than even the best sofa, and under the hood, the car came with a 455 cu-in V8 unit that churned out 265 horsepower.

8 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (1906)

The dream car of its day, the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost was launched in 1906, and it remains a collector's dream to this day. This big, beautiful land yacht launched the Rolls-Royce brand , and the manufacturer has never looked back since, sticking to what made them successful and popular in the first place.

The 48 horsepower that the Silver Ghost generated outmatched any other automobile at the time, cementing its name in the history books with its unique, exceptional, and innovative design that put comfort and luxury at the very top. Of course, its price tag reflected that, too .

7 Oldsmobile Toronado (1966)

The first year the Oldsmobile Toronado came onto the scene, it was very well received. The Toronado was Oldsmobile's most stylish luxury vehicle during its golden age. The Toronado was the personal luxury coupe to get, never lacking in power, innovation, or luxury .

The Oldsmobile Toronado made 385 horsepower, thanks to its Olds 425 cu-in V8 engine. In fact, after the 1930s, the Toronado was the first front-wheel-drive American car in decades. Today, one of these babies can be yours for around the $40,000 mark , with some models from 1967 going for as low as $20,000.

6 Pontiac Bonneville (1969)

The Bonneville first came off the Pontiac assembly line in 1958 , and over the next 3 decades, it was the top-notch luxury model for the brand. In its fourth generation, the Pontiac Bonneville came with the same style, luxury, and ride quality that had made the car famous.

This iteration of the Bonneville also came with a stylish slanted dashboard , and the cabin now had a lot of wood, enhancing the luxurious feel inside. With its wide taillights and massive wheelbase, the fourth-gen Pontiac Bonneville was one car that truly occupied every road it went on, armed with a gargantuan 7.0-liter V8 engine that made 360 horsepower.

5 Lincoln Continental (1972)

The Lincoln Continental, in its heyday, was the most luxurious car sold by the Ford Motor Company . The Continental is an American icon, and not without reason. This massive barge was as luxurious as it was huge, and past Presidents, too, agreed.

The Continental, with its great ride quality, plush interiors, and remarkable power, had proven to be a great nameplate for the Lincoln brand. In 1972, the Lincoln Continental was in its fifth generation, loaded with modern specs and the best luxuries money could buy at the time.

4 Imperial LeBaron (1966)

Chrysler first introduced the Imperial nameplate in 1926, as one of their luxury models . Three decades later, Imperial became its own company in 1955, birthing its own cars and sticking to their roots, making them as luxurious as possible.

This included the Imperial LeBaron, which ran on a massive 7.2-liter V7 engine and churned out 350 horsepower. The Imperial LeBaron was undeniably one of America's finest cars from the era , thanks to its contemporary and timeless look, and its state-of-the-art luxurious cabin, which had leather and wood accents.

3 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham (1973)

The New Yorker Brougham from Chrysler sported the styling from the Fuselage, and it stood at a massive 18.5-feet long. Running on a 440 cu-in V8 engine, the Chrysler New Yorker Brougham could have had a lot more power . Sadly, it was the '70s, and fuel and emission standards dictated that Chrysler undertune the engine to reduce power, which only meant 215 horses for the vehicle.

This land yacht came with leather upholstery, a silky smooth ride, and a cabin to die for. Quite the head turner, the Chrysler New Yorker Brougham came towards the end of the era of the land yachts but didn't fail to make its mark on the history books.

2 Mercedes-Benz 600 (1965)

If you'd thought land yachts were limited to North America, think again. How could Mercedes-Benz not have been featured on a list of the best luxury saloons ? 18 feet long, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman was meant to be driven by chauffeurs, as most Mercedes cars are.

Meanwhile, you could stay in the back, sipping on the finest liqueur, enjoying the excellent ride quality of the 600 Pullman . Running on a 6.3-liter V8 engine that made 245 horsepower , the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman was meant to be driven at cruise speeds. Its massive road presence was quite the eye-catcher, and so were its ultra-luxurious interiors.

1 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail (2021)

A $28 million land yacht from Rolls-Royce , the Boat Tail was launched last year in 2021 and got the entire automotive world talking. With 1800 parts that make it ultra-premium, Rolls-Royce only made three models of the Boat Tail, making it one of the rarest and most expensive road-going cars on the planet.

Inspired by the 2017 Sweptail , the Rolls-Royce Boat-Tail is the brand's most ambitious project ever. The highlight of the package is the parasol which extends from the rear deck, which could only be described as a mechanical flower blooming. With rotating cocktail tables, two refrigerators, and the entire car floor acting as the sound system's resonance chamber, the Boat Tail is undeniably the coolest and most special land yacht on the face of the planet.

What's It Like To Drive A Land Yacht?

We like to talk sports cars and other fun-to-drive lightweights, but let's not forget America's great modern addition to the car world: the land yacht. We know and love how big they are, but what are they like to drive?

Suggested Reading

While we were discussing cars that everyone should be forced to drive , Liberte for le Jetstar! chimed in with a description of what it's like to drive his (surprise) Oldsmobile Jetstar 88.

I've been driving a 1964 Oldsmobile 88 for 5 years now as a daily driver. Here's what I've learned: Plan ahead when you're braking. Four-wheel drums will stop you relatively quickly...once. After that, it's fade-o-rama. The steering is indeed nautical, but with over-assisted power steering and a surprisingly decent turning radius, low-speed maneuvering isn't too hard. I've done three-point turns on two-lane roads. Reverse is your friend. I usually back into parking spots; it's easier to get in and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay easier to pull out. J-turns are extremely useful, not just for scaring your passengers and bystanders, but for turning around quickly. Don't be afraid of potholes and curbs. With tall tires, a tough-ass suspension with massive amounts of travel, and cushy springs, driving over deep ruts and speed bumps is almost fun. Keep your foot in it if you get into mud/sand. Drive on the interstate a lot. On inner-city expressways, you can easily clip along at 90 and get a feel for what these cars are really meant to do. We all hear about the 30 dead hooker-sized trunks, but there's truth in the jokes. Especially in an older car with no frilly carpeting, it's really like having a little watertight truck bed. Just vacuum out the fur needles and oil every once in a while. You can make it fast pretty easily. Through technique alone, I was able to bring my 1/4 mile time down from 21.4 to 17.685. That's with a 5.7 liter engine, two-barrel carburetor, a two-speed transmission, an open 3.08 differential, and a 4,200 lb. car. In short, forget about gas mileage and buy one, especially anything from 1961-1967. You won't regret it.

Land Yachts: What Are They and Why Are They Still so Popular?

Land Yachts: What Are They and Why Are They Still so Popular

(RareCarMarket.com) – Aside from big SUVs and pickup trucks, the modern era seems to be all about fitting more into less or going for a minimalist approach altogether. To put it in simple terms, times have changed, and cars are much smaller and more convenient than they used to be. However, while the era of overly large and luxurious cars may be long over, the popularity of these vehicles remains. Here are some of the most notable land yachts to grace the world’s roadways.

1973 Buick Riviera

One of the most illustrious cars to come from a Buick factory is the Riviera. The Third Generation of this model came with a boat-tail design, making it a true land yacht. The interior was just as beautiful as the exterior, complete with some of the best features on the market, including seats that some say were more comfortable than a high-dollar couch.

1973 Imperial LeBaron

Imperial created what’s likely the largest land yacht to touch American roadways; the LeBaron. Coming in at over 19.5 feet long, it wasn’t just massive, it had a state-of-the-art interior complete with leather seats and wood trim. Some enthusiasts believe the Imperial LeBaron is one of the most impressive cars to come from that era.

2021 Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

While land yachts and their oversized bodies aren’t as mainstream as they once were, there’s still a high demand for them. Evidence of that is in the fact that a luxury car manufacturer like Rolls-Royce would design and produce one, albeit not on a mass scale. The $28-million Boat Tail is the most unique land yacht to hit the road — and the most expensive. Rightfully so, given the fact it has two refrigerators, rotating cocktail tables, and a parasol that unfolds from the back. Oh, and the car’s entire floor acts as a resonance chamber for its sound system, just for good measure. With a price tag like that, it’s no surprise there are only three of them in the world.

Unnecessarily large vehicles may not be as popular as they once were, but they still hold a special place in the hearts of many. Perhaps there’s enough love for these behemoths that one day they’ll make a significant comeback.

Forget about the humble motorhome, Dembell is launching the world’s most luxurious “land yacht” for explorers who appreciate the finer things.

The fledgling German outfit designed by Ustory Branding has just unveiled a lavish new RV that is more akin to a superyacht than perhaps anything else currently on the roads. Built around a three-axle Mercedes chassis, the camper is decidedly sporty with sleek lines and a red racing stripe, but it’s inside where things really get interesting.

Available in three different trims, the motorhome boasts the finest furnishings and a laundry list of top-notch amenities that includes a separate garage for your supercar. The upscale interior can be tailored to each driver’s needs and was spearheaded by Italian design team Galeazzi e Minotti , which is also responsible for outfitting some of Azimut’s drool-worthy superyachts.

At the front of the RV, the cockpit is equipped with four captain’s seats that each come with air spring suspension and a built-in massage function. This area flows seamlessly onto the plush lounge that sports a large leather sofa, a 55-inch TV, and a lift-away queen bed that can accommodate guests or children when needed. There is also room to add an optional dining table.

The. electric parasol is perfect for alfresco dining.

The nearby kitchen is fitted with state-of-the-art Miele appliances, including an induction cooktop, oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave to help you cook up a storm while on the road. The bathroom, meanwhile, features stone tiles and a ceramic sink, shower and toilet. The camper also comes equipped with a washer and dryer.

As for the primary suite, it stretches the entire width of the vehicle and comprises a large bed (79 inches by 79 inches), a few drawers and wardrobes and another TV for binge-watching while under the blankets.

Naturally, the camper offers all the requisite creature comforts, such as A/C, central heating, ambient lighting and a Bose home theater system that pairs with the two TVs. It also sports roof-mounted solar panels, an onboard generator and a 1,000-liter freshwater tank for when you want to live off-grid. There’s even an electric parasol for alfresco dining.

Dembell Motorhome

The interior resembles that of a luxe superyacht.

The real pièce de résistance, though, is the “tender garage.” It’s available in three sizes and can accommodate a wide range of vehicles. The first option comes with three slide-outs and offers just enough room to store a quad bike or bicycle. The small garage is fitted with two slide-outs and can fit smaller cars. Finally, the large garage boasts enough space to fit a Ferrari California or any other supercars measuring less than 14.75 feet.

The Dembell motorhome is slated to make its first public appearance at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon taking place on August 27 in Germany . Details regarding pricing and production are still to come, but this is one land yacht that shouldn’t have any issues finding a captain.

This clean, elegant, and very original 1964 Buick LeSabre sedan is a great example of the no-nonsense styling of the period, and to be honest, it has an undeniable appeal that still works today. Make no mistake, this is a big car, but the clean, purposeful styling masks its sheer size. Buicks were expensive machines and part of that was a lot of sheetmetal to demonstrate that you'd well and truly made it. The handsome LeSabre styling offers an upright greenhouse on a slender body, like a 9/8 scale Impala sedan, a look that really works well. The color is pretty close to Coral Mist, a factory offering in 1964, and just about the only part of this car that's a little extroverted. In a field of staid blue, gray, and green Buicks, this one will truly stand out and it really is quite handsome. It has likely been repainted at some point in its life and the finish still has a great shine that could easily be bumped up a notch by a talented hobbyist. The chrome is very good and the long strip of trim that runs down the flanks remains in excellent shape. Given how well all four doors fit, we're also confident that this car has never been seriously wounded. The brightly upholstered interior is a bit extroverted for Buick, but since it's almost entirely original, we're willing to forgive it. The seat covers are that cool mix of simple patterns and funky fabrics that worked so well in the '60s and you can see what they meant by "full-sized comfort." The gauges are in excellent shape, arranged in two large round pods ahead of the driver, and the steering wheel is remarkably well preserved. The carpets are a little discolored but it would be a mistake to replace them, and all the bright trim on the dash shines up nicely. A later AM/FM radio has been installed in the dash, but other than that, the interior is almost exactly the way Buick intended. There's cavernous storage space in the trunk, which is outfitted with traditional mouse fur fabric and a full-sized spare up on its own shelf. Buick's famous 300 cubic inch all-aluminum V8 was revolutionary in the early '60s, and survived into the 21st century under the hoods of Land Rovers. In 1964, it made 200 horsepower and a rather stout 355 pounds of torque, and probably had the best power-to-weight ratio in the industry. The engine bay is very nicely detailed, looking as if it's been restored rather than simply maintained, and it's the highlight of the entire car. It starts easily and runs smoothly, pulling the big sedan around without working hard. Power steering and brakes are welcome additions on this big cruiser, and thanks to a correct transverse muffler, it has a pleasant V8 burble that's suitably muted for a Buick. The underside is quite clean and with a 2-speed automatic transmission and highway-friendly gears out back, this is a car practically designed for your next family vacation. Original wheel covers live inside a set of 7.10-15 bias-ply tires that accurately replicate the original driving experience. Affordable, stylish, and rather unusual, this neat Buick will bring you into the hobby in a big way without breaking the bank. Clean, sleek, and in the case of this 1965 Calais hardtop, subtle and elegant. There's no question as to what this car is and from any angle it says that you've finally arrived. For the money, this car represents a lot of luxury and style that you probably can't get anywhere else. Park this next to, say, a comparable Lincoln of the period and the Lincoln looks downright frumpy while the Cadillac looks modern and low. It was repainted a few years ago in its original Aspen White and while it looks decent, a professional cut and buff would work wonders on this big coupe. With it you also get super straight bodywork that looks like it has never needed major surgery and with the long side trim and fender skirts, straight bodywork is critical. Cadillacs were always famous for their chrome, and yes, there's plenty here to keep shiny, all of it in good original condition including the front bumper and cool rear taillight housings with white lenses that illuminate red when you hit the brakes. With a little TLC, this car could be outstanding. The all-original interior might be showing a few signs of age, particularly otn he driver's seat, but I don't know if I'd be in a rush to replace it. Instead, take a good look at that cool textured upholstery and how cool it would be if you could just stich it up and keep it a high-grade survivor. The slender steering wheel frames a wide Cadillac-style instrument panel with lots of shiny trim to give it a very upscale look. And while the Calais was technically the "entry level" Cadillac, there's nothing low-rent about the quality of the materials or the elegant design. Options include factory A/C plus power windows and seat, so there's really nothing entry level about it. The door panels are in very good condition, as is the back seat, and the carpets are protected by a set of Cadillac-logo floor mats that have probably been there for decades. And yes, there's a massive trunk that's highly original and carries what might very well be the original spare tire. Cadillac's 429 cubic inch V8 made a stout 340 horsepower and moves the big coupe with the kind of effortless ease that you'd expect from a major luxury car like this. It's not detailed for show under the hood but it is quite clean with lots of signs of regular maintenance and as a result it's easy to start, has a smooth idle, and cruises through traffic like a great white shark. Recent service items include a new power brake booster so stops are smooth and confidence-inspiring. There's also a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, which was used for the first time in Cadillacs in 1965, and it powers a rear end big enough to look at home under a 1-ton truck. The underside is quite original but shows signs of a life outside the snowy, salty northeast and the single exhaust system offers a new muffler that sounds mellow and smooth, just the way a Cadillac should. 235/75/15 whitewall radials are fitted with original hubcaps that give the big Caddy a very understated look. Just watch, these cars are going to be hot. How can they not? Great looks, plenty of power, and a sleek attitude that is just the epitome of cool. Vehicle Review Vehicle Information ?Overview ?Introduction ?Walkaround ?Driving Impression ?Interior ?Summary Luxurious and capable, the ultimate Range Rover. The Range Rover is Land Rover's most prestigious offering, a luxury sport utility vehicle with a long history of quality craftsmanship and legendary "go anywhere" off-road prowess. The five-passenger Range Rover is available in two trim levels: HSE and Supercharged. Both powerplants feature direct fuel injection and are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift manual mode; full-time four-wheel drive with Land Rover's acclaimed "Terrain Response" system and an electronic air suspension help tackle a wide range of off-road conditions. Standard equipment on HSE trims includes a power sunroof, 19-inch aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlights, LED tail lamps, heated leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, hard drive-based navigation system, satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a portable audio interface with USB and iPod integration. New standard equipment includes HD radio, while the exterior gets refreshed with body-colored door handles, along with a gloss black treatment for the headlamp/tail lamp back plates and grille surround. Additionally, a Towing Preparation package is now offered, featuring a cross member with receiver, full-size spare and variable rear differential lock, as well as a new Silver Pack. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Range Rover represents the top of the line for Land Rover. The current-generation Range Rover has been with us nearly 10 years, since the 2003 model year, yet it still feels fresh, it still feels like a superb vehicle, and it's still one of our favorite new vehicles. It's classy and luxurious, it's smooth, it's incredibly powerful particularly in supercharged form, and it is amazingly capable off road. The 2012 Range Rover lineup includes a new top-line model called the Autobiography Ultimate Edition. Swathed in soft-feel semi-aniline leather, its four power-adjustable bucket seats flank a full-length console that incorporates a machined aluminum laptop table, a drink chiller, separate rear-seat climate controls and more. Two Apple iPads are linked to the rear-seat entertainment system. Oxford leather covers the door casings, dashboard, and steering wheel, and the wood inlays in the dash and doors is genuine Kalahari. Even the luggage floor is special, paneled like speedboat's deck in teak, with metal and leather detailing. Each Autobiography Ultimate Edition will be built to order, and only 500 will be sold globally. 2012 Range Rovers come with HD Radio and an iPod lead, and a new Towing Package is available. The Range Rover's off-road capability is downright astounding, thanks to its Terrain Response electronic all-wheel drive and suspension system. The system includes Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control. Range Rovers can scramble up rocky mountainsides, cross rivers and traverse mud bogs. They are easy to drive and instill confidence. The Range Rover interior is rich and beautiful. There are premium materials everywhere you look and touch. The leather seats are tall and supportive in all the right places, and there is a nearly infinite amount of adjustment. The steering wheel carries buttons galore for cruise control, telephone and audio, two of which are up-down-left-right selectors for display and information functions. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands. Options include power reclining rear seats and a 1200-watt harman/kardon sound system. For 2012, the 5.0-liter V8 engine offers more power, now rated at 385 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover says it can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 7.2 seconds. That is plenty fast for anyone in the real world, and plenty impressive for a 5700-pound vehicle. We found the engine beautifully smooth. The Range Rover Supercharged model blows 510 horsepower out of the engine and gets to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. We found the performance of the Supercharged Range Rover scintillating. It's an off-road rocket ship, with 460 pound-feet of torque available for passing or towing. All Range Rover models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission that's velvety smooth yet very responsive. The Supercharged uses powerful six-piston Brembo brakes, which will slow the truck safely whether braking repeatedly down a curvy mountain road or coming to a straight, quick stop from high speed. Naturally, they're supported by a sophisticated anti-lock brake system that's behind Hill Descent Control and Gradient Acceleration Control. Both are features that enhance safety on icy streets, not just off road. We've found few four-wheel-drive vehicles combine this level of acceleration and braking with a hushed, plush highway ride in a roomy cocoon of high-grade leather and wood. Whether crossing the Gobi Desert at night or negotiating Manhattan during the daily rush, the Range Rover is at ease. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround After a moderate facelift for 2010 and new grille textures for 2011, appearance changes for 2012 are minor. Door handles and side grilles are now body-color, while all lamp clusters acquire gloss black backplates for sharper contrast. The Range Rover design remains distinctive among SUVs, boxy and sleek at the same time, very classy. It has the shortest possible front and rear overhangs to maintain its awesome off-road clearances. Modest fender flares are integrated into the steel fenders rather than tacked on. Autobiography Ultimate Edition is distinguished by a unique, deeper front fascia that more sharply defines the lower air opening, wrapping body color around it rather than just over its top, as on the standard models. Matching upper and lower grilles go for the hot-rod Bentley look with a plain mesh that resembles, frankly, a chain-link fence in its texture, but with a brighter finish of course. The foglight nacelles are more prominent and bright-finished as well. The trademark fender vents are accented with brightwork. Politely short sill extensions visually connect the front and rear wheels, suggesting a running board more than anything racy. Like the deeper front fascia, they are not unattractive so much as out of place on an ultimate off-roader. Half a dozen different wheel styles are available, but the most striking features nine pairs of alternating thick and thin spokes (for 18 spokes in all), set tangentially to the hub. They look like they're spinning even when they're standing still. We prefer the more traditional styles. The teak-plank cargo floor looks quite convincingly like the deck of an antique yacht or speedboat. The planking continues on the inside of the fold-down tailgate, so opening the tailgate enhances, rather than spoils, the effect. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression All Range Rover models use the same compact 5.0-liter V8 that powers Jaguar sedans, with the latest technology including double overhead cams, 32 valves, variable valve timing, and direct fuel injection. The Range Rover engines are specially prepared to handle extreme tilts, water fording and extreme weather conditions. The Range Rover HSE uses a normally aspirated 385 horsepower version with 380 foot-pounds of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, a pace that's more than quick enough for safe passing. The engine sounds wonderful and feels blissfully smooth at full throttle, and is nearly soundless at cruising speeds. The Range Rover Supercharged takes that engine and adds the latest generation of Eaton supercharger, boosting the power to 510 horsepower and 461 foot-pounds of torque. The acceleration leaps from 0 to 60 in 5.9 seconds, which is hot rod territory, for this SUV weighing nearly three tons. All models use a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission, which features Normal, Sport and Manual modes. We found it effortless and unrestrained, and it shifts quickly in response to throttle input. There's a two-speed locking transfer case that can be shifted on the fly. The steering and suspension systems are nearly faultless, as long as you're not trying to treat the big SUV like it's a sports car. Lots of power-steering assist is needed for quick left-right moves at low speeds and off-road, but less is needed as speeds climb. The Range Rover is a tall, heavy vehicle, but it takes extreme maneuvers in stride. It works better to drive it in a stately manner. We found the ride quality of the Range Rover HSE to be about perfect. The suspension uses electronically controlled air springs and shock absorbers. We found the HSE provided excellent handling and little body roll in corners, especially for a hefty truck that rides this high off the ground and has a high center of gravity. The ride is smooth and the steering response is good, if not sports-car-like. It's a wonderful mix of luxury, silence and serenity. But it should be. Listen to all the things working for you: Dynamic systems include All-terrain Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Enhanced Understeer Control (EUC), Electronic Rear Brake Boost (ERBB), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Roll Stability Control (RSC), Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Gradient Release Control (GRC), Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Gradient Acceleration Control (GAC). It's a lot of alphabet soup, but it all works together both to increase capability and to make up for occasional deficiencies in the driving department. The Terrain Response system has five settings: Highway, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. All you have to do is look out the windshield, assess the terrain, and select the appropriate setting. The Range Rover will drive accordingly, including setting the suspension height. We also got to test drive a Range Rover Supercharged model. Just going down the highway, it was delightful. The huge tires are very quiet, and they combine with the electronically controlled air suspension and premium Bilstein Damptronic adaptive damping shock absorbers to deliver an extremely plush luxury-car ride, sampling the roadway 500 times per second and changing shock rates accordingly, each corner acting independently of the other three. In consideration of its 140-mph top speed, the brakes on the Supercharged are big Brembos, with six-piston calipers in front. We found them extremely powerful, and very progressive and sensitive to conditions. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Range Rover interior is rich and beautiful. Premium materials are everywhere you look and touch. There's European leather on the headliner, pillars, and door casings. High quality satin black and natural wood trim adds to the sumptuous feel of the interior. The HSE offers Burr Walnut or Cherry wood trim and both are pretty. The Black Lacquer looks impressive when clean, but it quickly shows dirt and we prefer the traditional woods. A 12-inch Thin Film Transistor screen replaces the usual instrument cluster. This screen displays the tach, speedo and other instruments virtually. The driver is able to move the gauges around on the screen for more convenient off-road operation. It's bright, clear, interesting and versatile. The front leather seats are tall and supportive in all the right places, and there is a nearly infinite amount of adjustment. The steering wheel carries buttons galore for cruise control, telephone and audio, two of which are up-down-left-right selectors for display and information functions. All the rotary switches on the instrument panel are hefty, and scalloped so they can be used with gloved hands. The window glass in the rear doors is laminated to enhance the silent running in the back seat. Power reclining of the rear seat, in addition to heating and cooling, is available. The 710-watt, 14-speaker harman/kardon system that comes standard produces chamber-like sound. A 1200-watt, 19-speaker system is optional. The available rear seat entertainment system includes a 6 DVD changer, separate screens in the front seatbacks, and headphones. The elaborate full-length console in the Autobiography Ultimate Edition incorporates, among other things, a small writing (or laptop) desk and a cooler with a slide-open top. Inside are holders for a couple of glasses (sized just right for cupholders that look as bright and solid as machined billet) and a bottle of your favorite back-seat beverage. It's really a striking bit of functional sculpture that looks, above all, convincingly expensive. The Terrain Response system, controlled by a click-wheel on the console, allows the driver to select among six chassis setups, depending on the terrain being traversed. Height control allows the driver to lower the body of the Range Rover for easy entry of passengers or raise it for off-road clearance. A third control allows for locking the center and rear differentials for demanding off-road conditions or icy on-road driving. There is a separate switch for Hill Descent Control, the system that restricts downhill speed to 2 mph on any grade without touching the brakes. In any off-road mode, a set of icons is displayed on the TFT screen showing the front tire steering angle and the locked/unlocked differential positions, so the driver always knows what's what when driving off-road. Using the height control to lower the Range Rover is a great aid when loading dogs and cargo. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The 2012 Range Rover is luxurious, powerful, smooth, classy and extremely safe, with offroad capability that's off the chart and handling that's downright nimble for a 5700-pound truck. It uses a 5.0-liter V8 made by Jaguar, with an excellent 6-speed automatic transmission. The standard Range Rover HSE has plenty of performance. The Supercharged model makes 510 horsepower and blows your mind. The HSE is powered by a 375-hp 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine, while the Supercharged trim boasts a 510-hp 5.0-liter supercharged V8. Both powerplants feature direct fuel injection and are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift manual mode; full-time four-wheel drive with Land Rover's acclaimed "Terrain Response" system and an electronic air suspension help tackle a wide range of off-road conditions. Standard equipment on HSE trims includes a power sunroof, 19-inch aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlights, LED tail lamps, heated leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, hard drive-based navigation system, satellite radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a portable audio interface with USB and iPod integration. Supercharged trims are further outfitted with 20-inch wheels, cooled front seats and upgraded interior trim elements. Safety features include seven airbags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability control with traction control and roll mitigation, front and rear park assist and tire pressure monitoring. Adaptive front lighting, automatic high beam assist, blind spot monitoring and a surround camera system are also available. The Land Rover Range Rover carries over with minor changes for 2012. Sam Moses contributed to this report after his test drive of a Range Rover in Colorado; with Jim McCraw reporting from Eastnor Castle, England. Well, when was the last time you saw one, let alone one in virtually stock condition? Maybe it's not a collector car yet, but something this clean with V8 power and room for the whole gang can't be a mistake, not at this price. The low-key looks of the big Malibu have aged well, and with everything '70s being popular again, you could have the coolest ride around if you're into irony. Actually, the green paint and smooth bodywork look pretty good for their age and it's obvious that someone has taken care of this car over the past 40 or so years. It comes from a warm climate and all four doors fit well, suggesting a car that has never been wrecked or neglected. Is it perfect? Nope. But imagine all the attention this car will generate at next week's cruise night, because everyone knew someone who drove one of these. It's also got a rather rare matching green vinyl top that's in quite good condition without the usual fading and popped seams you'd expect on a car of this vintage. The massive battering-ram bumpers are in excellent shape, the stainless shines up well, and you have to admit that the stacked headlights look pretty good on this body style. The big interior is also wonderfully well-preserved. Aside from some sun fading, which is inevitable on a car with this much glass area, it's completely intact. The plush bench seats are just as soft and comfortable as your sofa at home and the button-tufted door panels will look and feel familiar to anyone who grew up in the '70s. Instrumentation is basic, with just speed and fuel level, but the compartmentalized instrument panel is easy to read and still looks quite good. There's a newer AM/FM/CD stereo in the dash that sounds good in the hushed Malibu's interior and while it's not heavy on options, you just can't duplicate that big car feel these days. Your friends will be amazed by the stretch-out room available in back and if there was ever a car designed for road trips, this is it, from the comfortable ride to the gigantic trunk that's a little scruffy but in otherwise great condition. Chevy's bulletproof 305 cubic inch V8 provides good torque and reasonable fuel economy in the big Malibu, plus a nice V8 burble from the single tailpipe out back. Everything suggests that this is the car's original engine and it's in very good condition overall. It's so clean under the hood that we have to believe it's been recently restored, because no 40-year-old car has engine enamel that looks that good. You also get a correct air cleaner with snorkel intake, fresh belts and hoses with tower hose clamps, and lots of new parts wherever you look. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission is also original to the car and shifts smoothly to complete the luxury car feel. There's some light surface rust underneath, but you can see originality everywhere, from the floors to the exhaust system with a factory-style catalytic converter still in place. Simple hubcaps and blackwall tires emphasize the car's simplicity, and we wouldn't want it any other way. Collectable? Maybe not. Cool? Depends on who you ask. Affordable fun? Absolutely! This Malibu will bring back memories for many and offers a great alternative to the more familiar cars of the '70s. Recently serviced and ready to have fun, this end-of-the-line ragtop is the heavy cruiser you've been looking for. Repainted perhaps 25 years ago in its original dark blue livery, this big luxury drop-top has that old-school land yacht look. It was purchased new by the current owner's grandmother and has remained in the family since it was new, so there's a lot of history behind it. It's also lived its entire life in sunny, warm Atlanta, so the bodywork is quite straight, unlike the cars from up north. The paint is about what you'd expect from a car this age, with a good shine and a few signs of use, and it's exactly right for a car that you're going to drive regularly. The Caprice's styling was clean and uncluttered, a rarity for the mid-1970s and today it represents an era we'll never see again because there's just nothing like a massive American luxury car. Nice chrome bumpers and stainless side trim make the car look as long as a city block and it's fitted with fender skirts to help with the sleek profile. The black interior is completely original and offers a tantalizing glimpse into the 1970s luxury car market. Wide bench seats were good for six passengers and the contrasting blue carpets not only work well with the bodywork but add some style to the otherwise monochromatic interior. There are minor signs of age and since this car has lived in a warm climate, there's a bit of fading, but it would be a mistake to change anything in this awesome survivor. The gauges are all fully functional and as the top-of-the-line Chevy, just about everything is included, from factory A/C to power windows and locks, to an AM/FM stereo radio that is probably due for an upgrade today. The seating surfaces are in good shape for their age, with a back seat that still looks almost new and while it's not real wood, the faux burled walnut on the door panels and dash do warm up the interior. There's a recent black power convertible top with glass rear window, and it stows easily under a matching black boot. And for road trips, nothing beats one of these heavy cruisers, with this one offering a very original trunk that includes what might just be the original spare tire. The 400 cubic inch V8 is this car's original engine and it runs superbly thanks to a recent major service. It's not detailed for show, of course, but you already know these engines are virtually bulletproof and the big V8 never balks at moving the Caprice around. The carburetor is freshly rebuilt, the water pump is new, all the belts have been replaced, and even the radiator was flushed so it's ready to enjoy immediately. It starts easily and has a smooth, luxurious idle and pulls well with big-cube torque. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission feeds 2.73 gears out back, so it's an effortless highway cruiser and the quiet dual exhaust system just purrs along at highway speeds. 215/75/15 Michelin whitewall radials are fitted, adding a period-perfect final touch. Documented with a lot of original paperwork, including manuals and maintenance records, this is a car you can buy with confidence and enjoy for a long time to come. Lots of room, a pillowy soft ride, and purring V8 power all make for a very unique driving experience that we'll never see again. With incredible preservation, this one will take you back to the great days of open-air cruising when American luxury made you feel like the king of the world. The color is called Silver Taupe and it looks just about right on this big Olds. Not aggressive, but rather sophisticated and elegant. It's also the car's original paint, and while it's not perfect, it is remarkably well-preserved for being more than 40 years old. You could give it a deep clean and a buff to really bring out the shine, but as it sits, it has a nice soft glow that makes you want to heat out west on a long road trip. Obviously with original paint the sheetmetal underneath is also original and in excellent condition and despite the era's reputation for excess, the Delta 88 is clean and chiseled without looking too baroque. A contrasting rub strip accentuates the car's clean flanks and a familiar Oldsmobile split grille up front was the corporate look during the mid-70s. Sure, there's some chrome, including a pair of bumpers as big as battering rams, but the overall presentation is restrained and trim. The black interior is also 100% original and shockingly well-preserved. Wide bench seats offer room for six and even the guys in the middle probably won't be complaining about space. There are no splits or tears in the seats, no major wear, just some very minor comfort marks that are probably inevitable. Neat trim on the doors adds a bit of interest to the otherwise monochromatic interior and even the faux woodgrain on the dash is pretty convincing. Power windows are a useful addition on any convertible and the AM/8-track radio provides reasonable entertainment if you happen to have some 8-track tapes lying around. The convertible top is also probably original and in good condition, and these big GM ragtops used a unique scissors mechanism that allowed for a full-width back seat as well as a glass rear window. There's a matching black boot for when the top is down and the trunk is outfitted with a correct rubber mat and full-sized spare. The 350 cubic inch "Rocket" V8 under the hood delivers plenty of power for effortless cruising and entertaining performance. No, these were never intended to be fast cars, but it has a graceful and inevitable feel and you just know that it was built to cruise all day at 80 MPH across the wide-open spaces. The engine bay is pretty original and not detailed for show, but there's plenty of recent maintenance, including a new radiator up front to keep it cool. It starts with a familiar Oldsmobile growl from the single tailpipe and idles smoothly enough that you can barely feel it through the steering wheel. As a full-sized car, the big Olds gets a TH400 3-speed automatic transmission and a 10-bolt rear end with 2.73 gears inside, so it's a superlative highway cruiser. The floors are in good condition for an original car, and it hasn't lost a bit of its impossibly smooth ride. Part of that is attributable to the cushy 225/75/15 Uniroyal radials, which have been fitted to the original wheels. With only three owners and a remarkable state of preservation, this Olds represents high-quality summer time fun at a very reasonable price. This $39 million superyacht comes with a $3 million Bugatti and a spot on deck to park it — take a closer look at 'Xenos'

  • Xenos is a new superyacht concept that comes with a $3 million Bugatti Chiron.
  • There's also an on-deck garage with a folding ramp that lets you drive right onto and off of the superyacht.
  • The top-of-the-line Xenos will cost around $39 million, have 15,000 horsepower, and be able to hit a claimed top speed of more than 100 mph, according to Lazzarini Design Studio, which designed the yacht.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

Insider Today

Companies often try to lure customers in with attractive buy-one-get-one deals, but one design studio is taking that a step further by offering clients a Bugatti with the purchase of their next yacht.

Lazzarini Design Studio has penned a new superyacht concept called Xenos, and it comes with a complimentary Bugatti Chiron. Odds are that someone with the cash for a $39 million superyacht already has a supercar or two in the garage, but what's one more for the collection?

Not to mention, Xenos has a few more tricks up its sleeve, such as roof-mounted solar panels, auto-tinting windows, and a claimed top speed of more than 100 mph.

Check out some renderings of Xenos, which was brought to our attention by Robb Report , below.

Xenos is a superyacht concept that offers something most other yachts don't.

land yacht car price

It comes with a Bugatti Chiron — one of the quickest, most powerful, and all-around wildest vehicles on the market today — included.

land yacht car price

Not only that — the yacht has a compartment to store your new Chiron while out on the high seas.

land yacht car price

Thanks to an extending ramp, you can hop in your Chiron, rip a burnout right onto the dock, and speed away to your waterfront villa — all with minimal contact with the common folk hanging about the marina.

You see, it's all about COVID safety.

land yacht car price

When the Bugatti's in the shop, Xenos owners can keep other toys like jet skis and boats in the garage.

But the $39 million superyacht has plenty more going for it than just a free supercar.

land yacht car price

Built from carbon fiber and aluminum, Xenos's 130-foot hull is designed for high speeds.

land yacht car price

Lazzarini Design Studio, the firm behind the concept, says Xenos will be able to hit speeds of 90 knots — roughly 104 mph — in its most powerful 15,000-horsepower configuration.

land yacht car price

That would make it the fastest 130-foot yacht in existence, Lazzarini says.

land yacht car price

Plus, it'll be available in standard and hydrofoil versions.

The yacht comes with windows that automatically tint depending on how bright it is outside.

land yacht car price

Not to mention, there will be solar panels integrated into the roof ...

... and Xenos will be available in a hybrid-electric version.

As for the interior, buyers can choose from various layouts.

If you have a need for speed both on land and on water, you'll be in luck whenever Xenos goes from concept to reality.

There are hundreds of 2024 Land Cruisers being sold across the U.S. at their MSRP or even slightly under

  • When launched, some 2024 Toyota Land Cruisers were listed at over $20,000 above their MSRP.
  • Toyota sells the new off-roader in three guises, including a pricey First Edition.
  • All Land Cruisers feature a 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain making 326 hp and 465 lb-ft (630 Nm)

Like so many new, in-demand vehicles in the United States, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser was slapped with pricey dealership markups as soon as it landed in local showrooms. Fortunately for those in the market for the new off-roader, it’s not hard to find one selling at its MSRP or even slightly under.

There are 2,111 new Toyota Land Cruisers listed for sale on Autotrader nationwide. As we’ve reported in recent months, some still have excessive mark-ups, or ‘market adjustments,’ as dealers call them. For example, one up for sale through Andrew Toyota in Glendale, Wisconsin, has an asking price of $91,475, including a $15,000 markup. That’s not the worst we’ve seen here at Carscoops. In April, Thompsons Toyota in Placerville, California, was looking to sell a 2024 Land Cruiser First Edition with a $20,000 mark-up.

Read: Greedy Toyota Dealers Slap 2024 Land Cruiser With Ridiculous Markups Up To $21,000

While plenty of other 2024 Land Cruisers are sold above their MSRPs across the country, hundreds are available at their MSRP or even below that. For example, Bell Road Toyota in Phoenix, Arizona, has listed five Land Cruisers, all of which are being sold with generous dealer discounts, undercutting their MSRPs by between $3,375 and $5,771.

Dozens of other Land Cruisers can be purchased for between $55,000 and $60,000, most of which have zero miles on the odometer and some that have been driven less than 10 miles.

Good News: You Can Buy A 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser At MSRP – Or Even Less

In the U.S., the 2024 Land Cruiser starts at $55,950 before a $1,395 destination charge. Found at the base of the range is the Land Cruiser 1958, which sports simple circular LED headlights and cloth seats. The range then includes the ‘regular’ Land Cruiser priced from $61,950, while those willing to splash $74,950 before destination can pick up the keys to a First Edition model.

These First Edition models were among those hit with the biggest dealer markups, but plenty are now available at MSRP, including one going for $4,570 below that in Arizona .

Used vehicle pricing has been all over the map for the last few years, but EVs are leading the charge in the trend of declining prices. iSeeCars’ recent study found that several electric models are at the forefront of a pleasing trend of used vehicle price reductions.

iSeeCars ranked the vehicles with the largest year-over-year price drops as of May 2024, finding that the Jaguar I-Pace fell the most, at a 30.1 percent drop. The remaining top 10 cars with the largest price drop on the used market include:

  • Jaguar I-Pace: 30.1% drop between May 2023 and 2024
  • Chevrolet Bolt EV : 28%
  • Hyundai Kona EV: 26.5%
  • Kia Niro EV : 24.8%
  • Nissan Leaf : 24%
  • Tesla Model 3 : 23.9%
  • Tesla Model X : 18.8%
  • Jaguar E-Pace: 16.9%
  • Tesla Model S : 15.8%
  • Maserati Levante : 15.5%

Seven of the 10 vehicles with the largest price drops between May 2023 and 2024 were electric, while all of the models with the most significant price gains were gas. The Porsche 718 Cayman and Genesis G90 gained the most, at 30.4% and 17.3%, respectively. The Porsche 718 Boxster and BMW 5 Series hybrid weren’t too far behind.

Part of the used EV price drop can be attributed to buyers’ skepticism. iSeeCars’ executive analyst Karl Brauer said, “With so many EVs entering the new car market in recent years, and then flowing into the used market, it suggests an over-supply condition that will continue as more EVs come off lease . Without a major catalyst to increase EV demand, used prices for these models will likely keep falling.”

Used EVs saw far more aggressive price drops than gas models overall during that period. The iSeeCars study covered 2.2 million one- to five-year-old used models and found that used EVs dropped 29.5 percent year-over-year, compared to just 6.1 percent for gas vehicles. That decline is the first time that average used EV prices fell below gas models, indicating that now could be an excellent time to start shopping for a preowned vehicle .
