SuperYacht knowledge Magazine Highlights Egypt's Capabilities in Yacht Tourism

The latest edition of SuperYachtknowledge, a British magazine that exclusively focuses on the yacht tourism industry, has featured a special file about Egypt and its potential for yacht tourism. 

This came after the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion collaborated with the magazine to promote yacht tourism in Egypt, in accordance with the directives of President Abdel Fattah ElSisi to boost this industry.

The renowned magazine, which is distributed frequently to yacht owners and captains globally, sheds light on the introductory visit organized by the Authority last February. The visit hosted a group of captains, yacht captains, and journalists specialized in yacht tourism. 

The magazine also features the historic superyacht “El Mahrousa ”, which is the oldest in the world. The writer devotes an entire section to this yacht, built in 1864 by order of Khedive Ismail for the opening of the Suez Canal celebrations. 

In addition to the yacht, the magazine reviews various tourist cities, museums, and archaeological sites in Egypt visited by the delegation. These include the Grand Egyptian Museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NEMC), the Giza Pyramids area, the Valley of the Kings area in Luxor, and the iconic temples of Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae in Aswan.

What's trending in superyacht technology?

Despite the omnipresence of today’s smartphones and gadgets, yachts have struggled to keep up with tech developments onshore. But that’s changing – and fast, as Risa Merl discovers the latest technology trends in the world of superyacht design.

When it comes to technology, we’ve never had it so good. From an ever-increasing range of gadgets and gizmos to the latest advances in connectivity, there’s more choice, and more exciting developments on the horizon than ever before – and that goes for the superyacht world, too. Owners want the same services – if not better – that they can access on land, and a handful of specialist firms are doing their best to meet consumer-driven demand on board. Yet, whether owners appreciate it or not, yachts have their own challenges when it comes to keeping up with tech’s constant progress. The middle of the ocean is one of the hardest – and most expensive – places to ensure fast and reliable broadband. And the three-year build time of a custom yacht is a challenge for suppliers and designers who need to think ahead and include the latest tech by the time the yacht is launched. Nonetheless, tech companies are rising to the challenge with an abundance of products to enhance onboard entertainment and security.

“Yacht guests want the same experience they have at home, so rock-solid and secure Wi-Fi is the first priority,” explains Videoworks CTO Maurizio Minossi, “and bigger internet pipes will be available within the next two years in order to allow 5G and new-generation VSAT [very small aperture terminal – a compact, two-way satellite antenna].” Super-fast connectivity is leading the charge, then, but there are plenty more developments in the pipeline too...

Streaming on superyachts

On-demand services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime have all heightened our expectations of how quickly we should get whatever we desire. We want it now, and that includes being able to watch the latest movies and television shows, wherever we are. Streaming services that work on land, however, haven’t always worked as efficiently on yachts, both in terms of reliable connectivity and price point, as Anil Thadani, owner of the world- roaming 45-metre Latitude reports. “The service I used before was horrible,” he says. “Connectivity was spotty, the speed was awful and it cost a lot more because they only gave us a limited amount – 30GB per month – for about $7,000 [£5,400], and if you exceeded that, the rates would be exorbitant.”

Thadani found a new service for Latitude that is working wonders. Switching over to Marine VSAT required a new satellite dome, which incurred upfront costs, but he says that the service has been so good that the initial pain was worth it. Now for a fixed cost of $5,000 per month he can stream Netflix in remote parts of Indonesia and watch CNN live on his iPad. He says the streaming isn’t always flawless, but overall it’s “good enough” and he hasn’t experienced any outages. For an extra $5,000 per month, Marine VSAT can guarantee flawless streaming and unlimited data. Meanwhile, London-based satellite communications company Inmarsat is set to launch seven new satellites into orbit by 2023, which will include extended 'always-on' coverage across the Arctic for those plotting a polar adventure.

For those who don’t want to rely on a data connection, Kaleidescape is also offering its new Marine Movie Service. Launched at the Monaco Yacht Show, it offers movie and music collections that arrive on a hard drive in a matter of days. One drive can hold up to 100 Blu-ray or 50 4K-quality movies, and customers (either a hands-on owner or a crew member) can have whichever titles they want pre-loaded on to it. The service also offers curated selections of new cinema releases, classic movies and kids’ favourites too.

It’s not the breadth of choice, however, but the quality of what’s on offer that companies are focusing on. “Ten years ago, yacht owners and captains were more concerned with how to get enough content,” says Cheena Srinivasan, founder and CEO of Kaleidescape. “Now there’s an overabundance of content, and we are trying to solve that problem through curation. Think of this as a white-glove concierge service. We’re bringing convenience via an end-to-end system through working with our marine integrators, so the yacht owners don’t have to worry about anything.”

Kaleidescape demonstrated its offerings during the boat show, dimming the lights on board the Tankoa yacht Solo and showing how vividly coloured and rich in sound a movie from its system is. Solo is beta-testing this brand new service, supported by 88 marine integrators worldwide who will install the hard drives to ensure quality control.

IT support at sea

Priva is another superyacht tech company that’s putting a focus on concierge services to reduce owner headaches – what good is expensive kit if it doesn’t work when you want to use it? Priva’s Technical Concierge is a 24/7 service that connects crew directly to expert audiovisual and technical support. Rather than getting passed around at a call centre, users will find that the first person to answer this hotline is a highly skilled technical expert, who will work with the captain or electronic technical officer to get the yacht’s tech back online and working right away.

“We want yacht owners to get the most out of every minute they spend on board,” says Cynthia Gillis, senior vice president at Global Eagle, the company behind Priva. “PRIVA and our 24/7 Technical Concierge service are tailored to our clients who want to be fully connected and access customized content from anywhere in the world. We have 50, high-touch, trained technicians and specialists dedicated to yacht customers who are available to address our clients’ specific technical needs without disrupting their onboard experience.”

Connectivity on demand

Of course, superyacht owners aren’t on board all the time, and charter yachts aren’t booked every week of the year, so onboard tech has to be scalable to suit their needs. “Flexibility is key when it comes to yacht connectivity,” says Peter Broadhurst, senior vice president at Inmarsat. Its latest generation of Global Xpress satellites were launched two years ago and allow for greater bandwidth. Inmarsat then tailored the service to the yachting industry with Fleet Xpress, which has since performed more than 10,000 installations.

The service allows owners and managers to scale bandwidth up and down, depending on usage and the number of people on board at any one time, and even allows clients to suspend their service in the off-season (or in case a worldwide pandemic leaves you on one side of the world and your yacht on the other). "We've introduced a lot more flexibility into our plans," Broadhurst explains, "the ability to upgrade and downgrade as and when you want, suspend the service, change the data rates and plans." Inmarsat data plans start from just three months.

Adaptability is also key when it comes to a yacht’s build. “One of the biggest challenges during any yacht project is that technology keeps evolving, and you don’t want a new yacht with old tech,” says Casper Kleiman of Dutch company VBH, which creates audio, video and IT products for new-build yachts as well as refits. VBH confirms that in the past systems needed to be connected physically, which added to the challenge of designing a yacht that needed to be up to date at launch three years down the line. But this is now changing thanks to software-based connections. “By using a flexible software-based backbone, it’s easier to connect new hardware later in the build,” Kleiman says. “We’ve used this on a recent 87-metre yacht.”

Once installed, technology also has to work within multipurpose spaces, which are becoming increasingly popular on board. A helideck might host yoga in the morning, a round of TopGolf in the afternoon and a live music performance, nightclub or movie under the stars come nightfall – and it still needs to be able to allow a helicopter to land if required. “Providing multifunctional areas and spaces that evolve throughout the day, including the main saloon and beach club, requires technology that can adapt from one experience or functionality to another,” says Alistair Levine, director of sales and marketing at California Audio Technology.

“This type of flexibility harnesses everything from video walls and audio systems to lighting control and motorised shades, so that you can manipulate the visual and auditory experience to suit your needs – but this level of functionality needs to be discussed at the design stage.”

Smartphone apps

In recent years we’ve become attached – some might argue addicted – to our smartphones, so it’s no surprise that we now want and expect them to control our onboard tech. As yacht automation streamlines into a “smart yacht” experience, clients and crew want to be able to control all the onboard systems from one easy-to-use location. Videoworks currently offers just this, integrating all of the yacht’s domotics and onboard systems into a single device. Instead of the popular Crestron remote control, owners might opt for a dedicated multi-service app that allows them to manage all of their systems from a smartphone. ItwModeX is an iOS app (a web version can be installed on Android) designed by Itworks exclusively for Videoworks, which can be customised with content and graphics to suit each yacht. “Multi-service apps can seamlessly integrate with the usual tools guests are familiar with, such as Kaleidescape,” says Minossi. “We use them in most of our projects.”

Yacht brokerage houses are also thinking more about mobile devices, as proven by the new Burgess app which allows users access to its services whether on or offline. “We want to allow our clients and potential customers access to Burgess yachts and content via whichever channel they prefer,” says Tim Davis, chief marketing officer at Burgess. “Our research shows that our target audience favours mobile devices [over laptops or desktop computers] to access our digital services. We have seen a good proportion of new prospects registering with Burgess via the app, as well as existing customers. Take-up has been encouraging – and we are planning an Android version.”

Cybersecurity

Superyachts can have all the latest kit, then. Yet while advances in audiovisual technology are impressive, having sufficient cybersecurity to keep onboard internet connections safe hasn’t become standard practice. “Research showed us that 64 per cent of superyachts rely on simple firewalls or crew-based solutions to protect against cyber risks – and 76 per cent don’t have anyone on board to look after cybersecurity,” says Rob Myers, senior director at Inmarsat. The company now offers its Fleet Secure End Point service to address this problem. It is designed to prevent cyberattacks, detect vulnerabilities and respond to threats – and the bandwidth used doesn’t come out of the yacht owner’s monthly allowance. "It's a pragmatic approach to security," says Broadhurst.

At the Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam, Videoworks introduced Cisco ASA 55066, a new dedicated onboard cybersecurity device. “Cisco ASA is a state-of-the-art cybersecurity product,” claims Minossi. The network security device incorporates threat- defence software, which allows for real-time identification and prevention of viruses and threats from the web. Several levels of security are permitted via a single platform, and it can also look at all network activity to see vulnerabilities in any apps or files, with an automated system assessing potential threats.

Emotional rooms

“The modern consumer is all about the experience that their technology delivers to them, not the underlying technology,” Levine says. “Millennials are starting to drive these conversations. Whether they are the children or grandchildren of the owners, they are far more willing to pay for exceptional experiences than things.” Meeting this demand is the rise of dynamic, interactive and so-called “emotional” tech on board, which is designed to enhance a guest’s experience.

Sacramento-based California Audio Technology creates “dynamic entertainment experiences”, and is looking to do more with less – including less equipment. The company is working on an audio specification that will allow onboard DJs or bands to be accompanied simply by their laptops or instruments without the need to bring on a bulky PA system, and the time and logistics that are required for set-up. Working with production company Blue International Talent, it is developing a marine system spec that will consider a yacht’s individual sound and lighting needs – however high-spec these might be. 

“Most audio systems in the marine space are designed to deliver low-level background audio, yet most stadiums don’t have the aesthetic integration possible that a yacht requires,” says Levine. “This specification will allow for a whole new range of experiences for both charter guests and owners, by giving them the opportunity to have everything from a stand-up comedian to a jazz trio to someone like Coldplay, David Guetta or Elton John playing a private concert on the back of their yacht in a remote part of the world.”

Meanwhile, VBH is focusing on setting the mood, and helping to create ever more extravagant examples of interactive bars, walls and hallways that can transform a superyacht space using content displayed on screens. “Instead of such screens only being used for showing movies or television shows, we can use them as integrative backgrounds,” says Kleiman. “They can add extra depth and meaning to a boat’s space.”

Perhaps as a much-needed salve to all this overload in technology, Videoworks has developed what it calls the Emotional Room, a system that utilises an algorithm on a neural network to assess the mood of the people in a space and adapt the lighting and music accordingly. Cameras in the room will scan guests’ faces to determine their emotions by mapping “points of interest” on their faces, such as the eyes, lips and cheekbones. The neural network will then learn how different settings – from lighting set-up and positions to music selection – in the room affect human emotions. This self-learning system evolves the more it’s used, and is designed to replicate conditions that it logs as the most pleasing.

Emotional Rooms will start appearing on yachts from late spring this year, including in a project with one of the top Italian builders. Not only is superyacht technology getting better at giving us what we want, it will soon be doing it without us even asking.

Safety first

With such enormous pieces of machinery sitting far from land, there's a certain risk factor that comes with the territory of yachting. And while the owner is busy soaking up the sunshine or entertaining guests of an evening, it's the role of the crew and captain to ensure safety at all times. "Don't run on the decks" springs to mind, but in reality, onboard safety goes far beyond the do's and don't of yachting etiquette. Inmarsat is currently trialling an IMO approved safety solution 'Fleet Safety', set for release later this year. "We've effectively brought safety communications into the 21st century," says Broadhurst. "If the vessel is in any danger then the crew have immediate access to secure communications. It's easier to use than what's currently out there, with greater functionality that will allow the crewmembers to feel confident in onboard safety equipment and communications. Inmarsat was set up to provide safety to seafarers and this is effectively the next generation of safety."

Superyachts News belongs to The International yachting Media , the most read boating magazines network in the world.

The editorial group was born in 2014, from the entrepreneurial creativity of Luca D’Ambrosio who, awarded for digital innovation in 2011 by the President of the Italian Republic, has developed a digital native system for the international broadcasting of nautical news.

The magazine publishes news related to leisure boats over 24 meters, including sailing yachts, motor yachts or multihull. A magazine that, thanks to a fantastic container, collects in a single luxurious dedicated showcase, articles, news and tests of the giants of the sea, that today easily reach and exceed 100 meters in length.

Luxury yachts: history and definitions

Superyachts began to appear at the beginning of 1900 when the first wealthy shipowners ordered their construction with the intention of using them exclusively for leisure purposes.

Among the first motor superyachts we find many conversions of merchant or military boats. A perfect example is the famous Christina O which, 99 meters long and originally launched in 1943 under the name HMCS Stormont (an anti-submarine frigate), was purchased in 1947 by Aristotle Onassis and then converted to private use at a crazy expense for that time: four million dollars.

Today with the term superyachts are generically indicated all those pleasure boats longer than 24 meters, (about 80 ft), although, in reality, there are more precise definitions and subdivisions.

The first large subdivision obviously concerns their length. Are in fact specifically defined superyachts , leisure yachts between 24 and 50 meters while, with the term megayachts , we normally indicate those over 50 meters and up to 100 meters.

The few and fantastic pleasure yachts that exceed 100 meters are defined today gigayachts , like the Azzam that, launched in April 2013, measures the beauty of 180 meters (590 feet) and, perhaps for a short time, is the longest superyacht in the world.

The market of these magnificent giants of the sea is very active. From a 2016 statistic we learn in fact that in the world there would be 10,000 active superyachts, 80% of which are motor yachts.

Every year about 150 Superyachts are sold, produced and launched all over the world. The first producing country is Italy, which also enjoys the supremacy of the shipyard that claims the title of first producer in the world: it is the Azimut Benetti group that has been in first position for 21 years.

Megayachts News

These boats are real floating royal palaces, offering a wealth of facilities and equipment on board that make both relaxation and entertainment sublime. Most of these yachts offer suites and lounge areas, a gym, a disco, a cinema, a swimming pool, a spa, an area reserved for tenders, water toys, submarines and, on the largest yachts, one or more helidecks for private helicopters.

One of the main peculiarities of superyachts is the presence on board of a highly professional crew , able to provide a five-stars assistance during the entire cruise period. The crew is generally made up of the following categories of personnel: the captain, who is in charge of the boat; the chef, who is in charge of the kitchen and food management and the staff who, like in a luxury hotel, is dedicated to serving the guests. Onboard we normally find also a technical crew, dedicated to the operation and maintenance of the boat, usually a motorist and an electronics expert who, together, ensure the operation of the boat and all the systems on board.

It is therefore a very various and luxurious market, that is constantly evolving. Our online magazine was born from this observation, a publication entirely dedicated to these fantastic masterpieces of naval art.

The Superyachts News magazine has been created in two languages and brings the spectacular images of these boats to the web. The site has been designed to offer a rich, pleasant and functional experience, facilitated by the use of graphics created for mobile devices and only later adapted to desktop use.

From the beginning, the publisher set out to develop an innovative and unique model, developed to broadcast free news worldwide.  A multi-channel, web and social system designed for the yachting and luxury market, i.e. for a sector that certainly wants to communicate globally, reaching an audience of users with high spending power.

The International Yachting Media group publishes 6 magazines and is top ranked globally. With over 900,000 views per week in more than 200 countries, it is probably the most read yachting media in the world.

The audience includes shipowners (around 80%) as well as a significant proportion of captains and crew members who are among the top influencers in the industry. The main audience segment (86%) are men aged between 35 and over 50.

Geographically the publications are very strong in Europe and the Americas with a coverage of respectively 53% and 40%. Over 50% of our digital magazines are accessed through organic search .

Super Yacht knowledge Magazine Highlights Egypt's Capabilities in Yacht Tourism

The latest edition of Super Yacht knowledge, a British magazine that exclusively focuses on the yacht tourism industry, has featured a special file about Egypt and its potential for yacht tourism.

This came after the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion collaborated with the magazine to promote yacht tourism in Egypt, in accordance with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to boost this industry.

The renowned magazine, which is distributed frequently to yacht owners and captains globally, sheds light on the introductory visit organized by the Authority last February. The visit hosted a group of captains, yacht captains, and journalists specialized in yacht tourism.

During this visit, they explored many fascinating tourist destinations in Egypt that have the potential to attract yacht tourism.

The magazine also features the historic Super yacht “El Mahrousa”, which is the oldest in the world. The writer devotes an entire section to this yacht, built in 1864 by order of Khedive Ismail for the opening of the Suez Canal celebrations.

In addition to the yacht, the magazine reviews various tourist cities, museums, and archaeological sites in Egypt visited by the delegation. These include the Grand Egyptian Museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NEMC), the Giza Pyramids area, the Valley of the Kings area in Luxor, and the iconic temples of Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae in Aswan.

It is worth noting that at  last February, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, represented by the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion, organized the first promotional forum for Egypt as a destination for yacht tourism, in which a group of international experts in super yacht tourism and related activities participated, in addition to a number of Yacht captains, representatives of yacht charter companies, experts in marina construction and operation, and writers specialized in this field.

During this forum, the participants held a number of meetings with those concerned with yacht tourism in Egypt from the relevant authorities, during which the possibilities available in the Egyptian tourist destination to receive super yachts were discussed, and ways of moving from ports and marinas to museums and tourist and archaeological sites in the Egyptian tourist destination.

In the context of promoting the advantages and attractive elements that Egypt enjoys for the yacht tourism product, the Authority produced a group of documentaries during which it showcases the capabilities enjoyed by the Egyptian marinas on the Red and  White Mediterranean sea  and displays and promotes them among yacht captains and owners, internally and externally. While highlighting  on the capabilities of  various and different tourist destinations for neighboring and close to these marinas, in addition to preparing advertising materials from publications and others to review and introduce the advantages and technical specifications that each marina or port in Egypt enjoys.

An advertising campaign was also implemented about the single window for the Egyptian yacht tourism, which was launched by the Maritime Transport Sector at the Ministry of Transport, in which all concerned parties are represented for the purpose of simplifying procedures and obtaining security approvals, with an introduction to how to deal with this electronic portal, and planning to participate in many international events during The coming period will discuss yacht tourism in Italy, France and other countries.

When the US targeted Russia’s oligarchs after the invasion of Ukraine, the trail of assets kept leading to our own backyard. Not only had our nation become a haven for shady foreign money, but we were also incubating a familiar class of yacht-owning, industry-dominating, resource-extracting billionaires. In the  January + February 2024  issue of our magazine, we investigate the rise of American Oligarchy—and what it means for the rest of us. You can read all the pieces  here .

The luxury yacht may be the world’s most exclusive form of transportation. But there are only a hundred-some that meet the definition of a gigayacht—a pleasure craft 295 feet or longer. Their opaque ownership records offer a glimpse of modern wealth and power: Over two dozen are linked to Gulf royals, businessmen, or states, and 20 to citizens (past or current) of the former Soviet Union. At least 23 have reportedly belonged to Americans, including founders of Microsoft, Netscape, Amazon, WhatsApp, and Snapchat. The widow of a German retailer who thrived under Hitler owned one; a UK tax exile and a Formula 1 dad still do. Yugoslav strongman Tito’s old yacht makes the list; Dominican dictator Trujillo’s does too. Take a cruise through the history of the vessels and their—somewhat—more modest sister ships.

1895: Nineteen years before World War I, the future King Edward VII of England punches his nephew, Kaiser Wilhelm II, in the face, after the German’s 121-foot yacht, Meteor II , defeats the royal Britannia in a race off the Isle of Wight.

1954: Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis ushers in an era of postwar one-upmanship with his 325-foot Christina O . It features a pool that converts into a dance floor, furniture made from whale foreskin, and pornographic carvings.

1963: During his final birthday party aboard the presidential yacht Sequoia , JFK chases future Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee’s wife, Antoinette, into the bathroom and gropes her. “I guess I was pretty surprised, but I was kind of flattered, and appalled, too,” she says later. The ship’s visitor logs are destroyed after Kennedy’s assassination.

1984: King Fahd of Saudi Arabia builds the record-breaking 482-foot Prince Abdulaziz .

1987: Sen. Gary Hart (D-Colo.) drops out of the presidential race just before photos emerge of him with model Donna Rice aboard the yacht Monkey Business .

1988: Donald Trump acquires Nabila , which previously belonged to the Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi and was featured in the James Bond film Never Say Never Again . He renames it Trump Princess , adds a disco, and changes the helipad’s “H” to a “T.”

1991: After one of Trump’s casinos files for bankruptcy, he sells Trump Princess to his bank—which flips it to a Saudi prince. A new yacht, the Trump Princess II , which he boasted would be “something in excess of 400 feet long, closer to 500 feet,” is never built.

British publisher Robert Maxwell’s body is found in the Atlantic Ocean, where he had been cruising on a 180-footer named for his daughter—the Lady Ghislaine . The vessel is eventually resold to Anna Murdoch, Rupert’s second wife.

1994: At a cocktail party on the oligarch Petr Aven’s yacht in the Caribbean, Boris Berezovsky meets Roman Abramovich, calling him a “nice boy who wanted to discuss commercial projects.” He and Abramovich begin working together to acquire Sibneft, a Russian state oil company.

1997: Construction ends on The Limited and Victoria’s Secret owner Les Wexner’s ­316-foot Limitless . The project was overseen by his good friend Jeffrey Epstein.

1999: Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison buys the 191-foot Izanami from a Japanese seller. He changes the name to Ronin , he said later , after “the local newspapers started pointing out that Izanami was ‘I’m a Nazi’ spelled backwards.”

2001: Months before Enron files for bankruptcy, former CEO Jeffrey Skilling asks a company executive for advice on finding a yacht broker. “This industry is known for crooks and thieves,” he warns Skilling.

2002: House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Texas) promises to strip “corporate kingpins of their ill-gotten gains,” after scandals rock Enron and WorldCom. “We’re coming after the yacht.”

2003: DeLay charges donors $500,000 a pop for tickets to a yacht cruise.

2005: Ellison shoots down rumors he issued orders midconstruction to have his newest yacht, the 454-foot Rising Sun , extended to outdo Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s recently launched 414-foot Octopus .

Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-Calif.) pleads guilty to federal bribery charges after being caught living rent-free on a yacht, called the Duke-Stir , that was moored in Washington, DC, and owned by a defense contractor.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s 531-foot Dubai surpasses Prince Abdulaziz as the world’s longest yacht.

2006: Media mogul Barry Diller reveals the world’s longest sailing yacht, the 305-foot Eos , whose prow features a 9-foot-tall sculpture of his wife, Diane von Furstenberg.

2007: Diller opens a Manhattan corporate headquarters­­ at a Frank Gehry­–designed building that itself has been likened to a sailboat . It’s across the street from where Eos ties up.

2008: George Osborne, the No. 2 official in the UK’s Conservative Party, relaxes on Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska’s yacht while vacationing with his family in Greece. He denies an accusation that he solicited funds, explaining in a statement that they discussed “Russian history” and drank tea.

2009: As his marriage falls apart, Tiger Woods retreats to a 155-foot yacht called Privacy .

2010: Abramovich’s new ship, Eclipse , surpasses Dubai as the world’s longest yacht. The 533-foot vessel features a submarine, anti-missile systems, and lasers to thwart paparazzi .

2011: During an unsuccessful suit seeking $5 billion he believed Abramovich owed him from the sale of Sibneft, an exiled Berezovsky claims that his former partner helped purchase the yacht Olympia for Vladimir Putin. When the BBC publishes a supporting account from another Russian businessman five years later, Abramovich’s lawyers dismiss the allegation as “a rehash of speculation and rumours.”

2012: As GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney faces criticism for holding investment funds in the Cayman Islands, his campaign invites donors to party on Cracker Bay . The ship, owned by the founder of The Villages retirement community, flies the Cayman Islands’ flag.

2013: UAE leader Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan launches the 593-foot Azzam , surpassing the Eclipse .

2014: The Wall Street Journal reports that Ellison has basketball hoops on “at least two of his yachts” and had someone follow in a smaller boat “to retrieve balls that go overboard.”

2016: Allen’s Tatoosh drags its anchor through a protected zone in the Cayman Islands, destroying 14,000 square feet of coral.

2017: After leaving office, Barack and Michelle Obama retreat to the South Pacific aboard David Geffen’s yacht, where they’re joined by Oprah, Tom Hanks, and Bruce Springsteen.

Abramovich’s business partner, Eugene Shvidler, blocks views of the Statue of Liberty while anchoring his 370-foot Le Grand Bleu in New York Harbor for a month.

Addressing the national Boy Scout Jamboree, Trump tells an anecdote widely assumed to allude to sex parties on a yacht belonging to the developer of the Levittown suburbs. “You’re Boy Scouts, so I’m not going to tell you what he did,” he said. “But you know life.”

Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) buys a yacht and on the same day votes to cut taxes on yachts.

2018: Rupert Murdoch is airlifted to UCLA after collapsing on a yacht trip with his fourth wife, Jerry Hall. “He kept almost dying,” a source tells Vanity Fair .

Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott designates a billionaire donor’s marina as a special anti-­poverty opportunity zone.

Someone unties Seaquest , a superyacht belonging to Trump administration Secretary of Education (and billionaire) Betsy DeVos, causing it to crash into a dock on Lake Erie.

Businessman Jho Low, who financed The Wolf of Wall Street , is accused of taking part in a $4.5 billion scheme to siphon Malaysian state development funds and using some to purchase a $250 million yacht.

2019: Actress Lori Loughlin is arrested in a college admissions bribery scheme . Her daughter, USC student Olivia Jade, is vacationing in the Bahamas— on a yacht belonging to USC board of trustees chair Rick Caruso.

Following an investigation into corruption in the Nigerian oil industry, the US government auctions off businessman Kolawole Aluko’s Galactica Star , six years after Jay-Z rented out the vessel for Beyoncé’s 32nd birthday. A former Enron unit attempts to claim a portion of the proceeds.

Clarence Thomas visits an Indonesian preserve for Komodo dragons with billionaire Harlan Crow on the conservative megadonor’s Michaela Rose .

ArtNet reports that a $450 million (reputed) da Vinci that was supposed to be in an Abu Dhabi museum has been spotted hanging in Mohammed bin Salman’s personal yacht, Serene .

Steve Bannon is arrested off the coast of Connecticut by US Postal Police while aboard the fugitive Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui’s 150-foot Lady May .

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. dresses up as a character from the TV show Trailer Park Boys for a costume party aboard a NASCAR mogul’s yacht. He later posts a photo of himself to Instagram with his fly unzipped and his arms around his wife’s assistant.

2021: NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre testifies that he took refuge on Illusions , a Hollywood producer’s yacht, after the Newtown and Parkland mass shootings. “I remember getting there going, ‘Thank God I’m safe, nobody can get me here.’”

During a bitter divorce, the Daily Mail reports that Tatiana Akhmedova, wife of the Russian Azerbaijani billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov, hired a team of British special forces veterans to seize his yacht, Luna , in an effort to enforce a Marshall Islands court ruling. They settle instead, and he keeps the boat.

Port Azure , dubbed the world’s first harbor designed exclusively for megayachts, opens in Gocek, Turkey. It bills itself as a place where “problems big and small go away.”

2022: Amid reports a historic bridge will be dismantled so Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ newly built Koru can leave Rotterdam’s shipyards, residents threaten to pelt the sailboat with eggs . The city changes plans.

A Ukrainian mechanic is arrested in Mallorca for attempting to sink a vessel owned by his boss, a Russian arms dealer.

During this visit, they explored many fascinating tourist destinations in Egypt that have the potential to attract yacht tourism.

The magazine also features the historic Super yacht “El Mahrousa”, which is the oldest in the world. The writer devotes an entire section to this yacht, built in 1864 by order of Khedive Ismail for the opening of the Suez Canal celebrations.

In addition to the yacht, the magazine reviews various tourist cities, museums, and archaeological sites in Egypt visited by the delegation. These include the Grand Egyptian Museum, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NEMC), the Giza Pyramids area, the Valley of the Kings area in Luxor, and the iconic temples of Edfu, Kom Ombo, and Philae in Aswan.

It is worth noting that at  last February, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, represented by the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion, organized the first promotional forum for Egypt as a destination for yacht tourism, in which a group of international experts in super yacht tourism and related activities participated, in addition to a number of Yacht captains, representatives of yacht charter companies, experts in marina construction and operation, and writers specialized in this field.

During this forum, the participants held a number of meetings with those concerned with yacht tourism in Egypt from the relevant authorities, during which the possibilities available in the Egyptian tourist destination to receive super yachts were discussed, and ways of moving from ports and marinas to museums and tourist and archaeological sites in the Egyptian tourist destination.

In the context of promoting the advantages and attractive elements that Egypt enjoys for the yacht tourism product, the Authority produced a group of documentaries during which it showcases the capabilities enjoyed by the Egyptian marinas on the Red and  White Mediterranean sea  and displays and promotes them among yacht captains and owners, internally and externally. While highlighting  on the capabilities of  various and different tourist destinations for neighboring and close to these marinas, in addition to preparing advertising materials from publications and others to review and introduce the advantages and technical specifications that each marina or port in Egypt enjoys.

An advertising campaign was also implemented about the single window for the Egyptian yacht tourism, which was launched by the Maritime Transport Sector at the Ministry of Transport, in which all concerned parties are represented for the purpose of simplifying procedures and obtaining security approvals, with an introduction to how to deal with this electronic portal, and planning to participate in many international events during The coming period will discuss yacht tourism in Italy, France and other countries.
