Ever since I launched this blog I wanted to get my hands on the Landyachtz Tugboat. Nobody seemed to answer the right questions so I’ll do my best in reviewing this board as best as I can. It is about time to review the Landyachtz Tugboat due to popular demand, you guys won’t shut up about it so here we are.

There aren’t any real reviews out there in the blogging space (update: some spammy blogs are now copying mine), so I decided to buy this cruiser and see why people recommend this board so much. I tested the Tugboat under different circumstances. I also let one of my friends try it out to see if we are in agreement. Is it hype or is this really a good choice? We’re going to find out!

Landyachtz Tugboat First Impressions

Is the landyachtz tugboat good for beginners, rough terrain performance, cruising and carving, bear trucks, landyachtz tugboat vs dinghy, buy the tugboat when, don’t buy if.

landyachtz tugboat side view

Just look at it, so much concave! This board looks like something you can ride hard and fast! And once you get it in your hands it feels a just bit heavier compared to the Dinghy but I have no issues carrying it around. I got the Tugboat captain which seems a bit dull compared to the often playful graphics you find on other versions, but that doesn’t say anything about its performance.

It’s a bit wider and longer than the Dinghy and the tail is rather large. Lot’s of concave and the gritty wavy griptape ads a nice touch. Since I already own a couple of Landyachtz cruisers the trucks and bearings don’t hold any surprises.

I like the huge kicktail and there are some details you won’t notice unless you’re actually looking at it closely. The grip tape feels sturdy and I really want to jump and this board and just ride! is.

The Landyachtz Tugboat is a great choice for beginners. There is lots of room for your feet, it feels very stable and doesn’t make any unexpected turns. The steep concave will take some time to get used to but it’s easy to keep you balance because it’s so wide. The trucks aren’t too loose or too tight and with some small adjustments, you tweak it to make it more or less turny.

If you’re new to cruising and have a hard time choosing between the Tugboat and the Dinghy, I would go for the Tugboat. Even experienced riders will enjoy this board so I think Landyachtz really hit the sweet spot here. Where other LY completes fail, this one is a keeper.

Tugboat Test ride

landyachtz tugboat bottom view

When I get a new cruiser is don’t tweak them and ride them straight out of the box, after a few hours I usually adjust the trucks a bit once the bushings break-in. Surprisingly this was not needed this time, for me the bushings are perfect but this also depends on your size and weight.

I just finished testing the Landyachtz Surfskate so it took me a minute or so to get used to this thing, it’s way more stable and very easy to control, something I appreciate because I like to ride hard and aggressive.

My first push felt great, there is a lot of room for your feet which makes it extra stable and I quickly got used to this cruiser. You really feel the concave which is something you need to get used to. Also, the griptape is quite sticky, it takes more effort to move my feet around and get them in the proper position compared to other cruisers.

The stickiness will go away in time but it was very noticeable, once you adjusted, you’ll be fine. If it’s too much for you, you could sand it down a bit but better just to be patient, it will wear eventually.

This board just plows through anything, really digging it so far but I need to ride it a bit more so I’ll update this post accordingly.

I developed a routine now and know a few spots in my area to test the abilities of a cruiser. The Tugboat plows through patches of grass, small rocks, gravel, or the bonus stuff you get in Autumn like Acorns, chestnuts, and shells. The wheels just push them aside and sometimes even launch them into orbit.

Really rough asphalt (the ones full of holes and cracks) feels a bit uncomfortable and you’ll have a harder time controlling this board. To be fair, my Comet Cruiser also has issues when I ride this area.

Slides are possible if the surface is slick enough, my local bike path is perfect for cruising but it’s less suitable for sliding unless it’s been raining. Nevertheless, you can (power) slide this board a bit or do some backside 180 slides on concrete if you’re skilled enough, the steep concave and sticky grip tape should provide enough support to pull it off.

It’s a joy to ride but as always with Landyachtz Completes, the bearings could be better and I’m not a fan of the Fatty Hawgs wheels. That aside, it really is a fun ride and you can cruise with confidence without having to worry about eating sh*t.

It’s pretty carvy and maintains speed for quite some time depending on the surface you ride. It’s fast, maneuverable, and responds very quickly if you need to avoid pedestrians or cyclists.

It does lose grip when you perform really sharp turns, perhaps if ride it a bit more this will change but it’s not a surfskate. Overall I’m pretty content with this board, really love how it rides straight out of the box and the bushings seem to handle fine. There is no need to adjust the tightness of the trucks but to be honest, that really depends on your weight.

Lightweight might want to loosen the trucks a little, heavyweights won’t have to do anything. Just ride it for a few hours and adjust it to your liking.

The Tugboat provides more stability downhill but I won’t recommend bombing hills. The trucks just can’t handle it and at some point, you get speed wobbles. It holds up on mellow slopes though, and you have to really push it to lose control.

The Landyachtz Tugboat is not a trick board, people often ask if you can ollie or kickflip cruisers but they aren’t made for that. Sure you can, but you need to be very skilled before you can pull this stuff off and why not get a regular skateboard if you want to learn tricks?

Just slap some softer and bigger wheels on a popsicle skateboard and you’ll have a board for cruising and tricks, it’s that easy.

You are able to ollie curbs or at least get your board of the ground. The kicktail is pretty far from the ground to popping it is extremely difficult. You don’t need to though, just apply a bit of pressure and swipe your front foot and you ‘ollie’ a curb, no problem.

Basic tricks like slides or manuals are certainly possible though I wouldn’t recommend practicing manuals on a new cruiser, you’ll destroy the tail. You could get a tail guard, this will prevent your tail from becoming a razor blade.

Landyachtz Tugboat Components

landyachtz tugboat front view

Let’s take a close look at what the Tugboat is made of and what you can do to improve its performance. In my opinion, this board is great from the start but after a while, you might want to make a few adjustments. is.

Like always everything is fine with Landyachts, great deck, rides right out of the box, stable yet nimble, but the wheels and bearings – I’m still not convinced. The trucks are solid as always, I love the shape and concave of the deck and the huge kicktail is great for a more aggressive stance.

The deck consists of a kicktail and a curbed nose (for those who are skilled at nose manuals) and has a rather deep concave. The concave will take some time to get used to if you come from a longboard or a beginner cruiser like the Globe Big Blazer .

I personally really like it because it gives you that extra grip you need when you do some aggressive turning or plow through gravel. The huge kicktail has a really steep angle, more than any cruiser I currently own but really helps you to dig in when you are heading for a rough patch.

The grip tape is extremely sticky so you really need to make an effort to move your feet around, like I said this will go away after some time but I have a feeling it will stay firm. It also depends on the type of shoes you are wearing. For cruising, I usually get my Etnies Maranas because of the support they offer.

Because of its steep concave, you can actually do a couple of tricks if you know how. Beginners should really stay away from this stuff because this board isn’t meant for tricks.

Bear trucks are part of Landyachtz and they hold up fine, still, I think Paris trucks would do better. However, Bear trucks are high quality and can take a beating and they are able to carve to a certain extend.

If you carve deep and pull all our weight in a turn the bushings will say “no further” and you’ll notice your board giving away under you. To be fair, this is not a surfkate board and I might have tried some stuff this board wasn’t meant for but I ride another cruiser that won’t give away once you really test them to the max.

I wouldn’t grind curbs or anything though, they weren’t made for that. Might as well replace them with Independent trucks if that’s what you’re after.

I tested a couple of Landyachtz cruisers already and I dread buying a new one because I always get the same wheels that don’t impress me. Sure the Fatty Hawgs work but they do annoy me because there are so many better wheels out there. Can’t blame a company for using their own stuff though.

I do like the size, 60 mm seems like a good choice and to be honest, I like them better than the 63 mm version. They easily run over cracks and either launch small pebbles or run over them.

Upgrading the wheels once you get better at cruising is advised. It’s a great starter cruiser and the components work well together but there isn’t any harm in making it even better.

I’ll repeat my findings, Fatty Hawg wheels are okay cruiser wheels but they lack grip. The wide contact patch really helps you to to maintain stability and you can pull off slides on slick surfaces (which is such a great feeling).

The bearings have integrated spacers and aren’t that great. You won’t notice if you’re a newbie but I would replace them as soon as you get a chance. Ride it for a while and once you feel like you know this board and how it behaves, upgrade the bearings (and don’t forget to buy spacers). It will make a huge difference!

If you don’t mind me making a couple of suggestions, consider Bronson Raws or Bones Swiss 6. You’ll notice the difference right from the start.

It’s a complete setup, and you get stuff that works well together but you’ll also pay for being lazy.

I get this question a lot and the truth is it comes down to personal preference. The Tugboat is obviously better for people who are taller than average or rider with large feet. If this is you, the Tugboat is a better choice.

There is a slight difference in how they ride, the Dinghy is a bit more nimble and a bit harder to keep your balance. If you’re an absolute beginner, the Tugboat will make it easier to learn how to ride. The Tugboat is more forgiving and has more room for your feet, the Dinghy is way more unstable and for those who know how to ride.

If you skated in your younger years both are a good choice, but somehow I get a feeling you’ll appreciate this board more than the Dinghy because of it’s old school vibe.

Should You Buy The Landyachtz Tugboat?

landyachtz tugboat in the wild

It really depends like always. If you’re in doubt between the Dinghy and the Tugboat and never skated before, this is definitely the board you want. But this also goes for experienced riders. All I can say is that this cruiser offers a comfy ride and won’t do anything you won’t expect it to do when you’re slightly off stance. Easy to correct mistakes and a pretty chill ride.

You are new to cruising, are an old school skater that wants to ride again, love skateboarding, and want something agile to commute. Also, heavy riders and tall skateboarders with huge feet will absolutely love this board.

I tried to tear down this board any possible way I can but truth be told it is a super rad board and I really dig how hard I can push it without losing my balance. You’ll feel very comfy on this board and soon enough you’ll appreciate its quirks. Once you can push it to its limits it’s time to upgrade the wheels and bearings.

This will take you a year or two, so come back to this post once you’re ready and I’ll have listed the perfect upgrade for you.

Geez, I was pretty critical about this board and now I have to come up with something why you shouldn’t buy. Well, the first thing that comes to mind is the price tag, 200 bucks is quite expensive.

If you’re a newbie you might want to consider a cheaper board like the Globe Big Blazer . This board is really easy to ride for beginners. Ride it for a couple of seasons, sell it,  and get a better board!

Don’t buy the Tugboat if you want to do tricks, it is hard to ollie and I’ll give you mad repect if you are able to kickflip this board, it’s not meant for gnarly stuff and just a waste of the deck.

Not much more to add, it is a great complete cruiser board after all.

landyachtz tugboat cruiser bottom

I buy this stuff myself and I have to be honest with you, the Fatty Hawg wheels are okay but nothing special. They provide enough grip (except when it’s wet) you can slide on slick surfaces and overall they are fine, just not something to write home about.

Landyachtz produces their own wheels which makes the overall setup cheaper (I hope) but at 200 bucks you might want to consider setting up your own cruiser. It doesn’t get 5 stars, 4 is more than enough because it’s expensive.

Don’t be discouraged though, after testing 10 cruisers and getting another Landyachtz, it becomes a bit boring testing the same components over and over again. You probably just buy one cruiser ever and you’re settled.

The same goes for the bearings, nothing special. There are better bearings out there but you really have to assemble all the parts yourself to get you the perfect cruiser setup but it depends on what you want and what you prefer. is.

I absolutely LOVE this board and it really performs beyond expectation s. It feels really solid and stable and anyone will have a ton of fun riding this board. The grip tape will take some time to get used to but it really helps you to dig in and ride aggressively while you can also just lay back and just go for a super chill cruise.

So after a while, you probably want to get more out of this board and I would suggest some upgrades. Can’t go wrong with OJ super Juice and some decent bearings. It will make quite a difference.

Make sure to read about all the other boards I tested, check out my list of best cruiser skateboards .

Landyachtz AB-ST Review: Adventure Revisited

The new Landyachtz AB-ST is a Chromoly steel gravel bike with clearance for 29 x 2.2″ tires, a carbon fork, lots of mounting options for hauling gear, and a stable geometry suited to getting lost. We’ve been testing one out for a few weeks before its release, and you can find Miles’ review here…

PUBLISHED May 30, 2022

Action shots by Nathan Reimer ( @____nathan____ )

Two years ago, Landyachtz released the AB1 (Adventure Bike 1), positioned as a versatile and capable drop-bar rig with a mid-range price tag at around $2,700 CAD (~$2,100 USD), complete with reasonable tire clearance, a carbon fork, lots of mounts, and a lightweight aluminum frame. Landyachtz described it as a “do everything gravel bike,” and although this might be true for some, I felt it was missing a handful of the adventure-ready qualities that the name so boldly promised. A few months back, I was looped in on a new model that they described as being “longer, slacker, and more upright than the AB1″ with a steel frame, carbon fork, and clearance for 2.2” tires. I couldn’t help but think, now that’s an adventure bike!

The Landyachtz AB-ST is a completely new bike for the Vancouver, BC-based bicycle company. In my eyes, it picks up where the AB1 and AB-AL left off. It’s built up around a 4130 LY Select Chromoly steel frame with internal cable routing, their new Carbon Adventure Fork with an adjustable flip-chip style dropout, thru-axles, big tire clearance, and lots of mounting points for racks, cages, and fenders. Instead of simply creating a steel AB1, Landyachtz created an entirely new bike. As mentioned above, it’s longer, slacker, and much higher in the front end when compared to the AB1 or AB-AL. Where the AB1 felt like a road biker’s gravel bike, the AB-ST takes cues from rowdier, dare I say more adventurous riding. While some folks might roll their eyes at a gravel bike with 2.2″ tires, I’m brimming with excitement. To coincide with last week’s launch, Landyachtz sent over a complete AB-ST build for me to test out. Find my thoughts on it below.

Landyachtz AB-ST Review

Landyachtz AB-ST at a Glance

The AB-ST is the second steel drop-bar gravel bike in the brand’s current lineup. Compared to the others, its angles lean far further toward off-road capability. It has a longer wheelbase, lower bottom bracket, head tube angle that is a full 2° slacker, and more stack. On paper, the result is the most stable, capable, and mountain bike-inspired gravel rig Landyachtz offers. It’s also the only gravel bike in their lineup with internal dropper post routing, top tube bosses, and a proper selection of cargo mounts, including under the downtube. Framesets are specced with the new Landyachtz Carbon Adventure fork, which has three-pack mounts, a threaded fork crown mount, internal brake routing, and a flip-chip-style dropout to allow rake adjustment from 47mm to 52mm, giving the option of fast handling or a more stable ride for loaded bikepacking.

  • Frame/fork: Steel/Carbon
  • Angles (L): 70° Headtube, 74° Seattube
  • Stack/Reach: 626mm/455mm
  • BB Drop/Chainstay: 72mm/430mm
  • Bottom Bracket: 68mm threaded
  • Hub specs: 12x100mm / 12x142mm, TA
  • Seatpost: 30.9mmm
  • Max tire size: 29 x 2.2″
  • Price: $1,250 CAD / ~$975 USD

Perhaps the biggest difference between the AB-ST and the other models is its tire clearance. The AB-ST can officially handle 29 x 2.2″ tires, including fast-rolling cross-country tread, and can unofficially fit 2.25″ tires according to the build Landyachtz sent me for review. The 29 x 2.25″ WTB Nine Lines fit pretty well in the rear end of the bike, but the vertical clearance on the fork is uncomfortably tight. I think 2.2″ or even 50mm tires are probably the better option to leave some room for mud and debris, but I did ask Lucas at Landyachtz for the biggest tires they had, so that’s on me. It’s no surprise to see thru-axles front and back (12×100mm and 12×142mm), a threaded bottom bracket, and fully internal cable routing. There is only one small section of exposed cable along the bottom of the drive side chainstay leading to the derailleur and on the rear brake hose that runs on top of the chainstay.

Landyachtz AB-ST Review

The AB-ST shares several geometry and frame spec-related similarities with the new Surly Ghost Grappler, Kona Sutra LTD and ULTD, Breezer Radar X, and many more. It has the long reach like the Ghost Grappler, inspired by modern mountain bike geometry, not quite as high of a stack height, and reasonably short 430mm chainstays. While the big tire clearance technically fulfills our requirements as a 29″ drop-bar mountain bike , it’s still not quite as upright as bikes like the Salsa Fargo or Ghost Grappler.

Landyachtz’s AB-ST manages to pull some of the best specs from other bikes that fall into this category, including short chainstays, big tire clearance, a slightly taller stack height, long reach, slack front end, and steep seat tube angle. On paper, the AB-ST hits a sweet spot for me. It’s capable and stable but still sporty enough to keep up with speedy gravel bikes with smaller tires. It has the potential to be dressed down with narrow bars, fast-rolling rubber, and the fork in the high-trail position, or dressed up with 2.2″ tires, a dropper post, wide bars, and a more upright riding position. Landyachtz put together a complete build that’s more in line with the latter vision, which is the approach I’d take if I were building one up myself. Either way, any type of build will likely look great against the AB-ST’s classic silhouette and dark blue tubing.

Build Kit & First Impressions

This time around, I opted for an XL frame in an effort to get as much height as possible out of the front end. At 6’1″ with a 33″ inseam, I’m usually somewhere right in between a large and extra-large, so I decided to give the bigger frame a shot with the AB-ST. Landyachtz put together a fun build for me, complete with 2.25″ WTB Nine Line tires, flared Salsa drop bars, and a SRAM Rival 1×11 drivetrain and hydraulic brakes. The steerer tube came pre-cut from Landyachtz, and while I would have preferred some more room to raise the stem slightly, the fit felt good. I’m currently dealing with some neck issues, so the last thing I wanted was to be hunched over on a racy gravel bike. Thankfully, the AB-ST isn’t that. The 11-42T cassette was paired with a 42T front chainring, which didn’t leave me walking up any hills around Powell River but did see me standing out of the saddle and grinding up steeper grades. Mind you, that was without a fully loaded bikepacking setup, so if I was heading out on a trip next week, I’d be looking for a smaller chainring or a way to expand the low end.

Landyachtz AB-ST Review

The build kit Landyachtz put together is pretty close to how I’d build up my own. I like my gravel bikes to do more than just smooth roads, and the big tires, mounting points, and steel frame are all good indicators that it’s a pretty capable bike. I was secretly hoping they were going to sneak the integrated dropper lever into the left shifter/brake lever, but no dice. Lever actuated dropper posts on drop-bar bikes are great for dismounting, stopping at lights, and especially descending steep, rough trails and roads. The only reason I would possibly size down would be to squeeze in a slightly longer travel dropper post for getting rad.

I was happy to see rear rack mounts on the outside of the seat stays, as well mounts for bolt-on bags and a generously sized main triangle. The XL frame I tested had plenty of room for a large BXB Better Half Frame Bag and a big bottle on the seat tube, and it also fit a large Rockgeist 52Hz gravel frame bag nearly perfectly. The low seat tube mounts and triple-pack downtube mounts also make for a good platform to run a standard half frame bag to maximize the space. Those needing extra space for gear or water will be happy to see mounts on the new carbon Adventure Fork, which aren’t offset like on the original AB1 fork, making it compatible with more front racks, bottle and cargo cages, or all of the above. I was glad to be able to run my Rawland Rando rack alongside a standard bottle cage. It’s worth noting that the threaded bosses on the fork legs are recessed a few millimetres into the fork, so I opted to use a small spacer for a cleaner setup.

Ride Feel and Handling

While I haven’t had the AB-ST long enough to classify this is a long-term review, I still managed to pack in a good amount of riding. After a wet spring, the Pacific Northwest finally had some clear weather, and I took every opportunity I had to get a feel for the bike. I’ve been out on some big gravel days, navigated local singletrack, and zipped all over town to avoid filling my van up on gas.

One of the first things I did was replace the included 120mm stem for a 70mm Farr Headspace stem , which helped dial back the frame’s long reach. While I think I could still go shorter, and raise the bars up a smidge, the bike was comfortable and balanced feeling on all of my rides. On everything but a few steep descents, I felt planted and confident on the bike. With the help of its big tires, steel frame, and long geometry, the AB-ST plows effortlessly through pretty much anything. I found it to feel much more comfortable and stable than the AB1 I tested last year. With that said, the longer/slacker geometry on the AB-ST certainly isn’t as playful or snappy feeling as other gravel bikes I’ve ridden (the AB1 included), so anyone coming from a road background might find it a little sluggish at times. With the fork’s flip-chip in the high trail/more slack position, it felt most at home pointed straight, leaned into corners, and making wide, methodical turns.

Landyachtz AB-ST Review

It’s a long bike, so it took some getting used to while winding through narrow, technical trails. Beyond that, it’s hard to imagine what the AB-ST can’t handle. Having spent time with it, I’d be speccing mine with a dropper post and taller front end for a true drop-bar mountain bike setup. I expect most people would increase the gear range as well since it’s certainly not a featherweight bike and it felt most natural climbing in a seated position, rather than standing up out of the saddle. Although my post-Covid fitness isn’t quite up to speed yet, I’ve snuck in a few longer rides where my legs were the only thing holding me back. It doesn’t have the same powerful, responsive feel as the AB1, but if you’re looking to ride far and aren’t too concerned with speed, it could be the bike for you.

Landyachtz AB-ST Review

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the necessary front brake adapter to experiment with the high trail, 47mm rake setting on the fork. I did pull out the dropouts, which consist of an outside/inside bracket on both sides, held in place with small 2.5mm hex screw. The brackets are sandwiched on either side of the dropout, and when flipped the other way, they change the rake and wheelbase by 5mm. While it doesn’t seem like much, 5mm can have a noticeable impact on handling and feel. With quicker handling in the 52mm position and stability in the 47mm position, it’s nice to have options. The AB-ST fork is set up in the 47mm position with an adapter, and you just need to remove the adapter and mount the caliper directly to the fork for the 52mm position.

Landyachtz AB-ST Review

Adventure Bike: Take Two

When Landyachtz released the AB1 (Adventure Bike 1) they labeled it as their “do-everything” bike, ideal for your “daily commute, exploring your local trails, or a fully loaded bikepacking expedition.” While most of that held true, I felt the geometry was more road-oriented than what’s found on most off-road-focused drop-bar bikes. It’s not quite a monstercross bike, definitely not a drop-bar mountain bike, and for someone who likes the versatility afforded by big tires and the option for a dropper post, it wasn’t really adventurous enough for me.

In a lot of ways, the AB-ST is what the AB1 should have been. When thinking about all of the gravel routes within close proximity of Vancouver, where Landyachtz is based, the original Adventure Bike felt underwhelming. Routes like the BC Trail, Cowichan Valley 8, the newly published Tree to Sea Loop on Vancouver Island, and those here in Powell River and Texada Island are much more enjoyable to ride with bigger tires and a slightly more upright position. The AB-ST is the perfect platform for long-distance gravel tours in British Columbia and beyond, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see some folks who originally purchased the AB1 turning to its more capable younger sibling as their next bike.

Landyachtz AB-ST Review

Purchasing Options and Additional Thoughts

I ran a few questions by Landyachtz’s marketing and media guy Lucas Greenough to help clarify some things I’d been wondering while working on this review. Firstly, their ADV Fork currently comes with a 350mm steerer tube that can be cut to any desired length. Since each AB-ST is going to be built from the frame up, they have no problem accommodating requests like that, and will work one-on-one with the customer to dial in the fit and function of each build. Lucas also mentioned an updated ADV Fork is on the way, which will have an even longer 400mm steerer tube. The exposed rear derailleur cable was apparently chosen to reduce drag in the system, but considering it’s a straight section of cable and is susceptible to dirt and other contamination, I’m not sold on that thinking. Lucas did say that their in-house metal shop could modify the frame to have full-length housing. The other option would be to use a housing guide adapter like this from Problem Solvers. On the dropper post front, Landyachtz can set up a dropper with either GRX, SRAM left shifters (they have them in stock), or the Easton AX dropper lever. This cable port can also be used to run a front derailleur.

As far as getting an AB-ST for yourself, you have a few options. The global parts shortage has encouraged Landyachtz to sell it as a frameset to start. Currently, it’s too challenging to source enough components for any specific build kit, so they’ll be working with their customers to either piece together a completely custom build or work with whatever they have access to at the time. They have lots of Easton wheels and cockpits on hand, but certain drivetrains are harder to get. Although stock, ready-to-buy build kits make things easier, I’m excited to see what kind of unique AB-ST builds come out of their shop. If you’re interested, you might want to move quickly, as Landyachtz is only producing 100 framsets to start.

Landyachtz AB-ST

  • Balanced and stable platform for bikepacking and more
  • Off-road geometry is exciting when compared to AB1/AB-AL
  • Lots of mounts on frame and fork and room for a big frame bag
  • Dropper post routing and 2.2″ tire clearance
  • Aesthetically pleasing lines and classy paint job
  • 26 pounds isn’t bad for the burly build tested
  • Long geometry and slow handling in high-trail mode takes some getting used to
  • Exposed cable under chainstay is a little odd
  • No stock builds, and a global parts shortage could make actually building one up difficult and more expensive
  • Somewhat pricey at $1,250 CAD for a frameset, but not far off from the competition
  • Limited to 100 framesets
  • Model/Size Tested: Landyachtz AB-ST, XL
  • Weight: 26lb (11.8kg) with pedals
  • Place of Manufacture: Taiwan
  • Price: $1,250 CAD / ~$975 USD (frameset)
  • Manufacturer’s Details: LandyachtzBikes.com

In a time when our industry has an overwhelming number of gravel bike options, I ended my review of the original Landaychtz AB1 thinking, is that it? I was curious whether or not they’d come back with an updated version with less road-like geometry and more off-road capability. If you’ve made it this far, you’re probably well aware that they did. The Landyachtz AB-ST is everything I want out of a versatile, drop bar 29er. Features like 2.2″ tire clearance, dropper post routing, Chromoly Steel frame, carbon fork, and loads of mounting options tick off every box for me. Plus, the angles and specs match up as well. It lives up to Landyachtz’s claims and makes for the perfect platform to tackle the growing number of gravel routes in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. It might not be the fastest or most agile gravel bike out there, but it’s not designed to be.

Behind the Brand: Landyachtz

For countless skaters, the simple act of seeing someone riding past them one day has been enough to spark their imagination and inspire them to get on a board themselves and begin a lifetimes of side stance action.

Especially for  Landyachtz Co-Founders, Thomas Edstrand and Michael Perreten. Check out how the pair created one of the biggest brands in the history of longboarding in this Behind the Brand .

For countless skaters, the simple act of seeing someone riding past them one day has been enough to spark their imagination and inspire them to get on a board themselves and begin a lifetimes of side stance action. In the case of Thomas Edstrand, this common occurrence follows a similar trajectory. Except when Edstrand came across Michael Perreten on the University of Victoria campus, the two would transform their ensuing conversation over Perreten’s food coloring-stained, maple and fiberglass-wrapped deck, into a pursuit to start Landyachtz in the basement of a ski cabin in Whistler, British Columbia.

Michael Perreten's Deck, 1996

With a backdrop of steep, hilly terrain, the pair began one of the biggest companies in longboarding history with an idealistic goal: creating boards that were strong and technically advanced, in hopes of making it to the bottoms of their local hills in one piece. To conquer the challenge, Perreten assumed the role of shape design and construction while Edstrand took over the art and graphic design end of the operation.

Perhaps most central to the history of Landyachtz is the success they had in drop mounting construction before anyone else in the industry caught on. From the initial release of the Landyachtz DH Race board, the team crafted one of the first boards where the baseplate of the trucks sat mounted atop the deck while the truck’s hangar dropped through the deck, keeping the trucks as close to the ground. In time, the boys followed up with the Landyachtz Evo as the first production drop foot platform, providing unparalleled advantages in the downhill racing world and essentially changing the game. The Evo’s design came complete with an upturned nose for responsiveness in the front of the board while a detuned tail in back of the board provided stability and created the ability to tuck fast, handle corners and drift into speed checks.

In another sense, Landyachtz gained notoriety for their superior competence in using carbon fiber in their builds. Used to provide the durability and stiffness to fly down the sketchiest of mountain hills, the incorporation of carbon fiber also made for boards that were heavy enough to withstand the style of riding they became synonymous with. In the same sense, they were able to take the carbon fiber and infuse it in their trucks and boards designed for other disciplines.

Mackenzie Yoshida rocking through the perfect wheel/hat combo in the ditches.

Though Landyachtz has their roots in fast, speed-handling downhill boards, they have made significant contributions across other disciplines of skateboarding by taking their technical strengths and incorporating them into their diverse lineup of cruiser boards. In specific example, the Landyachtz Dinghy has benefitted from years of R&D in the way it has been refined over the years.

Unlike other similarly styled cruisers that have typically been produced with generic molds, these boards received their own specific molds over the years and have had the benefit of meticulous attention to detail throughout their design process. Combined with strength-engineered trucks, freeride-inspired, stoneground finish wheels and bearings with built in spacers, the Dinghy stands as a solid example of Landyachtz’s aptitude in downhill applied to other boards across the spectrum.

landyachtz it's business time

Of course, another key behind the success of Landyachtz is the exemplary riding showcased by their team members. From the all terrain ripping of guys like Billy “Bones” Meiners to the outspoken enthusiasm of scene supporters like Bricin “Striker” Lyons , the Landyachtz team provides the perfect examples of how to get down on their boards and have fun doing it. Often, team riders have started there relationship with the brand as local allies who grow their skills and interactions with the brand in tandem. While strong riding is an obvious pillar of the team, the Landyachtz squad is more accurately measured by their personality and contributions beyond skill level. Those who have meshed well with other team riders and aligned with the brand vision have been able to notch a spot on the coveted lineup and enjoy that perks that come with it.

This architecture deserves appreciation but Cassandre Lemoine's no complys are even more impressive.

However, Landyachtz supports more than just the team that keeps their boards in the streets. Over the years they have placed a special emphasis on supporting events and humanitarian causes, both locally and internationally. In their homeland of Canada, their continued efforts in keeping the well-attended, Attack of Danger Bay alive have helped it become one of the longest running downhill skate events in the world. Likewise, their involvement in events like the Toronto Board Meeting and various college tours helps maintain a presence in general industry events and beyond.

Alex Hannigan's mullet may be under his helmet but his riding is still all business in the front.

Away from home, Landyachtz has remained supportive of important environmental initiatives as well, most notably including their One Board, One Tree campaign . With this initiative, the company funds the planting of one Canadian maple tree for every board they sell as a way to directly give back to the hands that feed the business. Under the notion that planting one tree can in turn provide enough wood for up to 60 skateboards, they have worked with a handful of different organizations that have been responsible for planting over 120 thousand trees so far.

Adam Yates leathered up and leading the pack.

With one of the most storied pasts in longboarding, there’s no doubt that Landyachtz will continue to build on their established position in the industry with new product offerings and initiatives to help support the industry. As is typical, their new boards will go through a two year cycle that includes development and release of an original graphic, followed by a year of letting the boards out in the market and adding a graphic revision. Then, when the time is right, additions to the line will be made and the cycle will reset. With some of the most commercially successful boards of all time having been released under the Landyachtz umbrella, it’s anyone’s guess as to which of their upcoming releases will be the next to go down in the history books.

Airlines Restart Flights but Disruptions Are Expected to Persist

Planes began taking off again Friday morning after a big tech outage, but it will take airlines a while to get stranded passengers to their destinations.

Airlines raced on Friday to contain the effects of a tech outage that severely disrupted travel around the world early in the day, delaying or stranding passengers and flight crews.

The outage, which affected many industries and emergency services, caused chaos at airports, with more than half of flight cancellations concentrated in the United States, one of the busiest aviation markets in the world. The industry appeared to be getting a handle on the disruption on Friday afternoon, but its effects could ripple into the weekend.

More than 2,400 flights across the country were canceled on Friday and thousands more were delayed, according to FlightAware, a company that tracks flight information. Airports serving large cities, such as New York City, Chicago and Atlanta, were among the hardest hit.

There were about 110,000 commercial flights scheduled worldwide on Friday, according to Cirium, an aviation data company. A quarter were set to depart from U.S. airports, carrying up to 3.7 million passengers.

Canceled share of global flights

As the sun rose over the East Coast, major carriers, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, had paused flights. Each had begun to restart operations by around 9 a.m. Eastern time, scrambling to minimize the reverberating effects of the earlier delays and cancellations.

“Travelers, we’re working with airlines to closely monitor the global I.T. issue that could continue to affect flights this weekend,” the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement on social media.

The agency said none of its systems, including those at its air traffic control operations, were affected by technology outages.

American said in a statement that it had been able to “safely reestablish” its operation as of 5 a.m. Delta and United said flights had resumed in the morning. Several carriers said they would waive fees and fare differences or offer refunds.

But a Transportation Department representative said airlines might be obligated to go further and provide travelers with ground transportation, as well as accommodation to those affected by overnight cancellations.

At Denver International Airport, large screens where arrivals and departures would usually be displayed were flashing blue error messages, leaving some passengers confused and uneasy.

Frank Tingley, a 42-year-old data analyst, was among the thousands of travelers stranded at that airport.

“I’m not good, actually,” he said, adding that he first noticed an issue when airport staff had difficulties scanning tickets for his flight to Boston Logan International Airport.

Mr. Tingley said he was initially allowed to board the plane but after further complications and delays, passengers were told to get off.

“The general mood is that people are finding a quiet corner and just trying to hunker down,” he said.

An anxious scene played out late Friday morning at Albany International Airport as airline passengers who arrived after the earlier delays rushed to find their bags and used cellphones to put their plans back in order.

At a gate where an American Airlines flight to Charlotte, N.C., would soon board, passengers swapped stories and sought help from two airline agents who worked quickly to untangle their routes.

The airline employees seemed to succeed in some cases. But not everyone would arrive to where they were going before night fell. A man and woman with two children who were headed to Los Angeles discussed where to spend the night in Charlotte.

The outage affected several airline systems.

For United, that included those used to calculate aircraft weight, check in customers and manage call center phones. At Taoyuan International, Taiwan’s largest airport, and Hong Kong International Airport, airline agents had to manually check passengers in. In India, some airlines issued handwritten boarding passes because they couldn’t print them or issue them digitally.

In South Korea, Jeju Air, which flies to dozens of Asian and Pacific destinations, said on its website that a number of services, including flight reservations, were disrupted. Air Premia said its reservations and online check-in systems were not working normally, and urged passengers flying to San Francisco and Newark to arrive at Seoul’s Incheon airport as soon as possible.

Planes already in the sky were able to continue to their destinations.

Some airlines were hardly affected. Alaska Airlines, the nation’s fifth-largest carrier, canceled only a handful of flights on Friday because it did not use the CrowdStrike software that caused the outage, a spokeswoman, Tricia Bruckbauer, said in a statement.

“We are working hard to accommodate as many impacted guests from other airlines onto our flights, and we’re grateful to our teams for taking great care in keeping guests moving,” she said.

The delays and cancellations were expected to have a cascading effect because airport landing slots and support staff were limited, and crews often worked several trips in a day.

When flights are canceled, pilots and flight attendants may be late to their next assigned trips, or unable to make them altogether, requiring airlines to assign backup crews. Aviation regulations also limit how many hours crews can work at a stretch, including time spent waiting at airports. That can force airlines to find and assign other pilots and attendants to take over, leading to further delays.

Carriers routinely deal with last-minute changes; they appeared to be limiting the effects of the disruption on Friday. But such widespread outages can quickly spiral out of control for even the most prepared airlines.

The industry has had similarly large disruptions earlier this year. Bad weather forced U.S. airlines to scrap more than 3,100 flights on Jan. 15, the worst day for cancellations this year so far, according to FlightAware. On average, about 320 flights were canceled per day this year, while another 5,200 were delayed.

Over the winter holidays in late 2022, Southwest Airlines suffered a major disruption when it was unable to cope with severe weather at airports in Denver and Chicago. The airline, one of the nation’s largest, ended up canceling nearly 17,000 flights — more than a third of those scheduled — over the last 10 days of the year. That episode cost Southwest more than $1 billion.

On Friday, however, Southwest appeared relatively unscathed: While hundreds of its flights were delayed, only a handful had been canceled.

The rout in tech stocks is a 'golden buying opportunity' for investors, analyst says

  • The recent tech sell-off is a "golden buying opportunity," according to Wedbush.
  • The midweek rout in tech stocks was partly triggered by Trump's hawkish comments about Taiwan.
  • But solid earnings results in the second-quarter should spark a rebound in the tech trade, Ives said.

Insider Today

The sell-off in technology stocks represents a "golden buying opportunity" for investors, according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

The recent sell-off was partly sparked by former President Donald Trump's hawkish comments on Taiwan and the potential for more tariffs in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek.

"They did take about 100% of our chip business. I think Taiwan should pay us for defense. You know, we're no different than an insurance company. Taiwan doesn't give us anything. Taiwan is 9,500 miles away. It's 68 miles away from China," Trump said.

"Taiwan took our chip business from us, I mean, how stupid are we? They took all of our chip business. They're immensely wealthy. And I don't think we're any different from an insurance policy. Why? Why are we doing this?" Trump asked.

With polls and betting markets recently moving in Trump's favor for the November election, investors took Trump's comments seriously, with the Nasdaq 100 falling more than 3% since the interview was released. Chip stalwarts also sold off on reports that President Joe Biden's administration was readying a fresh round of restrictions on trade with China to limit its access to cutting-edge tech.

But Ives said Trump's rhetoric can represent more bark than bite, and that the latest tech sell-off ultimately represents a great buying opportunity for long-term investors.

"This is all a game of high stakes poker for the Trump campaign and a shot across the bow against XI/Beijing," Ives wrote. "We believe the 'Trump trade' does not ruin the AI Revolution thesis and tech bull market and to some extent it's just a negotiation that will be a long and drawn out process."

Semiconductor production won't be moving to the US in a significant way anytime soon — Taiwan produces about 92% of the world's advanced microchip supply.

And with the global economy dependent on the silicon wafers that come out of Taiwan, it's not in the US' best interest to disrupt that by letting China take it over.

Principal Asset Management's Todd Jablonski said this tech sell-off is simply a small blip in the grand scheme of things.

"A possible Trump administration doesn't disrupt the forward momentum of big tech in the U.S. These types of market blips are common as we approach elections, and investors should be cautious in making moves based on these fluctuations," Jablonski said in a note on Thursday.

What ultimately matters most for the price of tech stocks over the long-term is earnings, and that area is still a bright spot, according to Ives.

"Our playbook continues to be own the AI Revolution thesis and winners on sell-offs like yesterday. We believe 2Q earnings will be a major positive catalyst for the tech sector and expect tech stocks to be up another 15% for the year adding to the robust tech gains in 1H2024 as now the broader tech growth story takes center stage," Ives said.

Mass IT outage: here's a list of companies and operations affected

  • A huge global IT outage is disrupting flights, banks, retailers, and media outlets.
  • The widespread disruptions have been linked to an issue with the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
  • Operations affected include airlines in the US and Europe, supermarkets, and some 911 lines.

Insider Today

A mass IT outage has hit flights, banks, retailers, and media outlets around the world.

The issues appear to be linked to the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.

Microsoft also acknowledged the issue in an X update early Friday, writing, "Our services are still seeing continuous improvements while we continue to take mitigation actions."

Here are some of the companies and operations affected.

Numerous airlines grounded flights early Friday morning, including the big three US carriers: United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines. In statements, they all cited technology issues.

Delta and American had both canceled their ground stops by 7 a.m. ET.

A United spokesperson told Business Insider that it was holding all aircraft at their departure airports while it works to restore systems. "Flights already airborne are continuing to their destinations," they added.

American has blamed the issues on CrowdStrike, saying they were because of a "technical issue with Crowdstrike that is impacting multiple carriers," according to BBC News .

The budget airlines Frontier, Allegiant, and Spirit also issued ground stops which were later canceled.

Frontier's was issued on Thursday night. "Flight operations are currently being impacted by a major Microsoft technical outage," it said in a statement.

Spirit said it was unable to rebook affected customers because of the outage.

Disruption also extended to Europe. The continent's largest airline, Ryanair, advised passengers to arrive early as the outage caused "disruption across the network."

KLM also said it had to "largely suspend operations" as the outage made "flight handling impossible."

British Airways, Wizz Air, Turkish Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa, and Qantas were also among those who said they were affected.

According to a Facebook post from Alaska State Troopers , emergency lines in the state are also affected.

The post said: "Due to a nationwide technology-related outage, many 911 and non-emergency call centers are not working correctly across the State of Alaska."

"We appreciate your patience and will update you when we know more," the statement added.

The major UK airports Heathrow, Gatwick, and Luton have reported issues, with some warning of delays and disruption.

Related stories

An X post from Gatwick Express , a train service for the airport, said the company was unable to access driver diagrams at certain locations, "leading to potential short-notice cancelations, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks."

A spokesperson for Belfast International Airport confirmed to BI that whiteboards were being used to handwrite flight information before systems were later restored. Whiteboards were also used at Singapore Changi Airport.

Hospitals and doctors' surgeries

Several hospitals and doctors' practices appear to have been affected by the outage.

In the UK, the NHS' EMIS system, which doctors use to book appointments, view patient notes, order prescriptions, and make referrals, appears to be having issues .

A spokesperson for the NHS told BI in a statement: "The NHS is aware of a global IT outage and an issue with EMIS, an appointment and patient record system, which is causing disruption in the majority of GP practices."

They said that long-standing measures were in place to manage disruption and that there was no known impact on 999 or emergency services, so people should use these services as normal.

"Patients should attend appointments unless told otherwise and only contact their GP if it's urgent, and otherwise please use 111 online or call 111," they added.

Two German hospitals canceled elective operations scheduled for Friday, Reuters reported.

NYCT Subway

Commuters in New York City and DC may also find themselves facing delays Friday morning.

In an X post, the NYCT subway said: "Train arrival information is unavailable for A/B/C/D/E/F/G/J/M/N/Q/R/Z/Rockaway Park Shuttle/Franklin Av Shuttle due to a worldwide technical outage. Train service is unaffected."

The post said the tech outage was also impacting Subway officials' ability to see train locations.

Broadcasters

Sky News also appears to have been hit by the outage. The UK news channel has been showing archive footage and briefly displaying an error message.

The news site appears to be up and running at the time of writing.

London Stock Exchange

The London Stock Exchange's website was also experiencing issues.

"RNS news service is currently experiencing a third-party global technical issue, preventing news from being published on www.londonstockexchange.com ," the company said in a statement.

"Technical teams are working to restore the service. Other services across the group, including London Stock Exchange, continue to operate as normal," it continued.

Retailers and fast-food giants

Bloomberg reported that McDonald's Japan suspended about a third of its stores in the country on Friday. The issue was with the stores' cash registers, the report said.

The grocery-store chain Woolworths told BI some stores had "been impacted as a result of the global IT issue." All but six stores were open for business, but some had fewer checkouts functioning.

Bloomberg also reported that at the Ocean Park Marriott in Hong Kong, staff were using pen and paper to check guests in and said the outage was affecting their systems globally.

Delivery delays

FedEx and UPS are warning of delivery delays because of the outage.

In a statement on the company's website , FedEx said it was experiencing "substantial disruptions throughout our networks due to a global IT outage experienced by a third-party software vendor." The company said parcels due to be delivered on Friday might face delays.

A UPS spokesperson told BI that it continues to operate effectively but there may be some service delays due to third-party outage "impacting some UPS computer systems in the U.S. and Europe."

Some US state driver services are down

Drivers in some states are unable to access services because of the outage.

Georgia's Department of Driver Services posted on X that "due to the global Microsoft/Crowdstrike outage, DDS services are unavailable at this time."

Tennessee's Department of Safety and Homeland Security said some Driver Services Centers may not be able to process transactions, according to a post on X.

North Carolina's Department of Motor Vehicles driver license and plate agencies are also impacted and unable to assist customers, according to a CNN report.

SKATE: RETURNS & CANCELLATIONS

Skateboards get thrashed from their very first ride and often before they’ve even left the rack in the store – but that’s okay because they’re designed to withstand all of the thrashings.  We endeavor to ship our boards in perfect condition and our assembly team go to great lengths to ensure your new board arrives in pristine conditions – but sometimes a little scratch here or a mark there can happen when we’re building them up.  We understand this isn’t ideal but please bare in mind that we try our best and that after your very first skate you’re going to see quite a few marks, but perfection isn’t beautiful.

RETURNS AND CANCELLATIONS: All refunds, returns and cancellations are to be initiated by contacting our customer service team using the form below, or by emailing  [email protected].  If you have any questions about anything, even during a refund process do not hesitate to reach out. 4. Landyachtz Dinghy Review

  5. Landyachtz Tugboat Review

It's a joy to ride but as always with Landyachtz Completes, the bearings could be better and I'm not a fan of the Fatty Hawgs wheels. That aside, it really is a fun ride and you can cruise with confidence without having to worry about eating sh*t. It's pretty carvy and maintains speed for quite some time depending on the surface you ride.

One of the few truly great boards landyachtz make. It's a small mini cruiser with decent ride height.
