13 tips to make the most out of your luxury charter fine dining experience
One of the highlights of chartering a luxury superyacht is the fine dining experience. When it comes to cuisine no resort in the world that can match the personalized menu, the superb service and the delightful ambiance of a charter yacht.
A mega-yacht is your opportunity to have your own gourmet restaurant with a five-star chef at your beck and call. You will be living the grown-up version of a child in a candy store.
Here is some advice to make sure you get the most out of the cuisine during your trip.
Choose superyacht with a chef that matches your preferences
Every chef has specialties, and these should be considered as you choose your yacht . Your charter broker can often provide you with sample menus.
Be honest and clear when filling out your food preference sheets
Your chef will rely on your preference sheets to create the menus for your superyacht charter. Be absolutely clear about your likes and your dislikes, about what you normally eat and what you are prepared to sample.
Be upfront about any dietary restrictions
The preference sheet is also where you should be clear about any dietary restrictions, food allergies, or other factors that affect the meal planning. There’s no need to be shy, charter chefs have seen (and handled) everything from the common no-seafood or vegan diets to complicated sodium or gluten-free regimes. Diabetes? No problem! Kosher? Easy! As long as they are aware of your requirements, you can rest assured that you will serve superb cuisine.
Make sure any specific alcohol requests are known beforehand
Fine cuisine and fine wines go together like yachts and water, so it should be no surprise that a selection of extraordinary wines will be available for your tasting pleasure. If you have specific preferences, such as Italian reds only with dinner or an icy flute of champagne before breakfast, be sure to mention it beforehand. You can, in many cases, select the specific wines by label and vintage so they will be waiting for you on board.
Decide on how formal you would like your meals to be
How you want to dine is something else to consider. Every charter yacht is fully prepared to provide you with formal dining every night, and this would include fine china and silver, linen and a multi-course meal with wine paring. Depending on where you are chartering, you may want to break this up with more casual meals.
Eat meals in alternative locations
Breakfast and lunch are pleasant as alfresco meals, enjoyed more casually on the aft deck or under an umbrella on the upper deck. In some cases, depending on the design of the yacht, you can enjoy a “country-kitchen” meal at a dinette open to the galley, which allows you to interact with the chef and learn a few culinary tricks to take home.
Alert the crew if you are hungry
There is something about sea air, sunshine and yachts that creates an appetite, and your galley crew stands ready with a wide variety of snacks to satisfy that need. Just a mention to one of the crew that you’re a little hungry, and you’ll be presented with a collection of casual snacks
Give advanced notice if you want late night food
The chef does need to sleep so if you expect to have the munchies in the wee hours, let the crew know beforehand. Snacks can be prepared and stored near your suite for 24-hour needs.
Pre-plan any extra guests joining for meals
Your galley crew is prepared to cater to your every desire from a formal dinner to a more casual cocktail party with yummy hors d’oeuvres. There is one rule: this must be planned well beforehand with both the captain and the chef. There is no excuse for arriving back from shore with a handful of friends and expecting to be served.
Enjoy any specialist culinary equipment
The galleys on many charter yachts often include an unusual selection of equipment that can also bear on your choice of meals. A teppanyaki grill, for example, can serve up everything from stir-fry to Mongolian barbecue. Your yacht is also likely to have a full-sized barbecue grill on deck for everything from steaks to hamburgers. A surprising number of yachts are now equipped with gas-fired pizza ovens, allowing guests to enjoy a freshly baked slice of pizza while enjoying a movie.
Go for a picnic
Your crew may take you to a secluded beach for a picnic ashore. This will be a major production, with tents for shade, beach chairs, a barbecue and picnic tables, and even games ranging from beach golf to volleyball.
Tell your chef about any special occasions
Don’t forget to mention any special events to your chef as well, because yacht charter crews absolutely love to put on a party. Birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, and business coups all warrant a celebration and where better than on a charter yacht?
Have a themed evening
Your chef and cabin staff can provide entertainment as well and it’s fun to include a “pirate night”, for example, when everyone dresses in costume and the crew decorates the dining table with gold doubloons and treasure chests. You can expect the menu to reflect the event as well, with everything from “castaway stew” to Blackbeard’s brûlée.

Dining while on a luxury yacht charter
Bountiful breakfasts on the aft deck, silver service suppers beneath the stars of Sicily, and long lazy seafood lunches from the very fish you caught that afternoon - the charter experience brings out the best of culinary cool. A major part of living well is dining in decadent style and nowhere can you do this better than when sailing on your superyacht charter. Not only does the yacht lifestyle gift you your own glorious personal chef, but the pleasure of calling from port to port introduces you to a heavenly world of global dining.
How can I make the most of my luxury charter yacht dining experience
Whether dining in the casual surroundings of the upper deck or sitting down to formal dinner linen and glass set tables, eating onboard a luxury yacht charter is always an occasion. The crew are well versed in gliding discreetly around the table, ensuring champagne glasses are bubbling to the top and plates are plentiful with the chef’s latest pleasures.
The beauty of having space on your own yacht is that you can dine the way you want. Whether you love an epic sit-down dinner with pearls and lace or if you prefer an easy breezy al fresco lunch, you pick the mood that suits your schedule the best.
Even beyond dining on deck; foodie fun can follow you near and far on a superyacht. From gourmet restaurant style picnics on deserted sands to midnight snacks of homemade popcorn and ice-cream to accompany a movie on deck, cocktails and canapes for that special event – make every morsel count onboard. If you want to make your yacht charter vacation go off without a hitch when it comes to food, take a look at these tips for making the most of your onboard gourmet experience…
Think about formality
Silver service suppers or more casual meals? When it comes to making the most of your luxury charter yacht dining experience, you may want to consider how you want to dine. Charter yachts are ever willing to accommodate your own style, so be prepared to offer silver service every eve if you wish. Those wanting a more laid back experience can also enjoy barefoot bliss and there’s always the option to mix it up for both formal and informal occasions.
Utilize the space
Yachts have so much space that you never need to eat in the same place time and time again. You can choose to take an alfresco breakfast on the deck, take lunch overlooking the salty sea and signature ocean views, before choosing meals in the more formal spaces come the evening. You also don’t have to stay on the yacht to dine - picnics on deserted beaches are always a bonus.
Don’t be shy about snacks
The salt sea air is notorious for hitting those hunger pangs so don’t be shy about letting the crew know when you are in need of nourishment in between meals. Mezze plates, snack platters, crudites, casual snacks, and whatever you want can all be whipped up and brought to you at whim. Remember to let the cabin staff know if you are a late night food muncher so they can prepare some munchies to keep close in the smaller hours.
Plan parties in advance
Entertaining and supper with friends is all part of the luxury lifestyle. Your crew and captain will be more than happy to help you welcome guests onboard in style. However, if you are throwing soirees and dinner parties, you will need to plan these in advance so that the chef can prepare accordingly.
Why Superb cuisine and luxury superyacht vacations work perfectly together
Dining while onboard a luxury charter is always an occasion. The two elements of first-class cuisine and sailing go hand in hand. Having a bespoke menu, ever changing settings (from brunches on beach chairs to fine china and five star service), and seamless staff recreating the restaurant experience every night - only in completely private surroundings. Here are the beautiful benefits of dining on your luxury superyacht.
You get your own five star chef
Better than many Michelin starred restaurants, having your own private chef onboard a superyacht charter is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Even before stepping foot on your ship, the chef will be well aware of your culinary palate. Don’t be shy in informing the crew and chef as to your favorite dishes as yachts can even come equipped with gas fired pizza ovens, teppanaki grills, and gleaming kitchens to rival the worlds best restaurants. Whether you adore Cuban coffee or vintage French cheese and foie gras, the chef can work your whimsical passions and preferences into a menu tailored specifically to suit your party. Superyacht chefs are often handpicked for their expertise and innovation in the kitchen, so let them work their magic and enjoy the fruits of their lavish labor.
You can visit gourmet ports of call
Sailing from port to port gives culinary connoisseurs the chance to expand their repertoire and try out local delicasies. The shores of Europe are laced in places that take the art of delicious food very seriously. From authentic bouillabaisse on the shores of Marseille to homemade pasta and salt baked fish along the drama of the Amalfi Coast, limoncello in Sicily and sweet Sardinian wine – find out why the European coastline is such a fabulous foodie haven. Even beyond the stirring Mediterranean Sea; taste thick steaming clam chowder in New England, zesty Key Lime Pie in the pastel hues of Florida, and the famed conch salad that comes all the way from the blue Bahamas. From local cuisine cooking classes to clinching a reservation at one of the world's best restaurants; yacht charters entice you to taste the world.
You can entertain in epic style
A stunning space, a private chef, and a dedicated crew – these are the finest ingredients for epic entertaining onboard. Whether you want to throw a starlit soiree with chilled champagne and canapes, or if you desire a sit-down dinner with your favorite entourage; when you have access to an amazing yacht, these get-togethers can go off without a hitch. Themed evenings, masque balls, pirate nights, wonderful wine tastings, elegant afternoon teas, and whatever divine delights you can imagine; the chef and crew will be only too happy to help you piece together the perfect get together that is sure to go down in history.
Choosing a yacht based upon the chef and supporting crew
Connoisseurs of culinary greatness can even consider which yacht they choose based upon the chef and supporting crew. When dealing with your yacht broker or conducting a search you can ask to see crew profiles and even sample menus to ascertain if the chef is a good match for your own personal tastes. Yacht chefs undergo the same training as professional chefs and will hold certain certifications and accreditations from top tier culinary schools.
Planning my menu while on my luxury yacht charter
Fill out the food preference sheets.
Before you step foot on your boat you will be asked by your charter broker to fill out a preference sheet to make everything run like clockwork. This is where you will inform the chef and crew of your personal preferences when it comes to divine dishes and drink. Be very clear on mentioning foods you love and foods you hate so that the chef can curate a menu that works for you and your charter party.
Explain dietary restrictions
If you have any allergies, sensitivities, or particular dietary requirements you should also be very clear about sharing this information. Superyachts usually come with highly trained and experienced chefs who are well-versed in the world of catering for special diets - whether you prefer vegan diets, vegetarian, gluten-free, diabetic, halal, or anything that calls for special attention.
Consider drink pairings
The culinary charm of a charter vacation doesn’t stop at the edge of your plate but also extends to drinks too. One of the many joys of the preference sheet is the fact that you can share your favorite specific wines, liquors, cocktails, beers, and non alcoholic beverages to suit the finest local produce. Whether it's a special bottle that you love or a preference for vintage champagne ice cold in a bucket before breakfast, every pleasure is catered for.

A vacation is not complete without the very best food and drink. Find out what to expect when dining on board a luxury yacht charter.
Fine dining, fancy wines and gourmet dishes are among the greatest pleasures of a luxury holiday. Fresh local produce from tropical destinations, new and exciting cuisines and Michelin-starred nights out are all part and parcel of a superyacht charter, and with a world-class chef at your disposal for the duration of the charter, you would be remiss not to take advantage of this exquisite opportunity.
We can all agree that a vacation is not complete without the very best food and drink. And chartering is any gastronome’s dream vacation, allowing you to try a variety of cuisines and dishes throughout your travels - from the famed seafood in Sardinia, to traditional Thai street food in South East Asia. Whilst the yacht itself offers an unrivalled level of indulgence and luxury, the location and food will also play a part in determining the success of your charter experience, so it’s an important element to consider.
Choosing the right location
If you consider yourself something of a foodie, choosing the right location to complement your taste is critical. Maybe you are an adventurous food-lover, keen to try local specialities and unique dishes. Or perhaps you are a particular fan of seafood, eager to visit some of the world’s renowned seafood havens in the West Mediterranean.
With an onboard chef keen to impress, they will use the best local produce to introduce you to the unique flavours of your destination. From premium seafood to oriental spices, they will know the best ways to show you the delights of your chosen location.
RESTAURANTS AND ON-SHORE DINING
A luxury yacht charter is not complete without trying some of the area’s most renowned restaurants. From hidden gastronomic treasures favoured by the locals, to Michelin-starred dining establishments known for their silver service, stunning presentation and creative dishes – when going ashore, you will have no end of choices for where to eat.
Your Captain will also be able to recommend some of the best restaurants using their local expertise, and will be more than happy to arrange reservations should you wish to dine ashore throughout your charter vacation.
PAYING FOR FOOD AND BEVERAGES ON BOARD
With a crewed yacht charter, any food and beverages throughout your vacation will be covered in your Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). Paid before the charter, this sum covers any additional costs incurred throughout the vacation, including fuel, berthing fees, and food and drink.
The APA usually amounts to 25-40% of your charter fee, but any of the funds that aren’t used throughout the charter will be reimbursed at the end of your holiday. Equally, if your expenditure exceeds the amount paid in the APA, you will be expected to cover the additional costs at the end of the charter.
Selecting Food and Drink
Have any favourite snacks you simply cannot live without? Or maybe you would like a particular bottle of champagne to celebrate a special occasion whilst on board the yacht? Whatever your preferences, you will have the opportunity to request specific food and beverages prior to your charter.
This also includes listing any dietary requirements, so that your chef can make necessary adjustments to the menus to ensure maximum comfort and safety for everyone on board.
How can I make the most of my luxury charter yacht dining experience?
When it comes to luxury charter yacht dining, you can expect nothing short of an exquisite culinary experience. The opportunity to dine aboard a luxury yacht, surrounded by the serene beauty of the open sea, is an indulgence like no other. However, to truly make the most of your yacht food experience, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Do you have any favourite snacks you simply cannot live without? Or maybe you would like a particular bottle of champagne to celebrate a special occasion whilst on board the yacht? Whatever your preferences, you will have the opportunity to request specific food and beverages prior to your charter.
Before embarking on your voyage, be sure to communicate any dietary restrictions or preferences to your charter broker. This will ensure that your meals are tailored to your tastes and needs, and you can enjoy your yacht food experience to the fullest.
Take advantage of the location. Whether you’re in the Caribbean or the Mediterranean , each destination has its unique flavours and culinary traditions. Work with your chef to incorporate local ingredients and dishes into your meals, and take the opportunity to try new and exciting yacht food options.
The beauty of a luxury yacht dining experience lies in the attention to detail and personalised service. Allow yourself to be pampered and enjoy the full extent of the experience. From fine wines to decadent desserts, every aspect of your yacht food experience should be savoured.
WHY SUPERB CUISINE AND SUPERYACHT VACATIONS WORK PERFECTLY TOGETHER
The epitome of luxury travel, superyacht charters offer the ultimate escape from reality, and what better way to elevate this experience than with exceptional yacht food?
Gourmet dining has become a vital component of any luxury travel experience, and superyacht charters are no exception. With a private chef at your service, you can relish in a culinary adventure tailored to your every preference. Whether you prefer fresh seafood caught from the depths of the ocean, delectable hors d’oeuvres, or an exquisite multi-course dinner, your private chef will leave no stone unturned to make your culinary dreams come true.
The beauty of yacht food is that it can be customised to meet your dietary preferences and nutritional requirements, without compromising on flavour or presentation. From gluten-free, vegan, to kosher, your chef will work their magic to ensure every dish is a feast for your taste buds.
The experience of dining on a superyacht is second to none. You can enjoy your meals al fresco on the deck, with uninterrupted views of the glistening sea, or in the comfort of the yacht’s plush interior. The ambiance of a superyacht, combined with the exquisite food, creates a dining experience that is both intimate and unforgettable.
Can I choose a yacht based on the chef and supporting crew?
When it comes to choosing your charter yacht , there are many factors to consider. But for the discerning traveller who appreciates the finer things in life, one of the most important considerations is undoubtedly the food. After all, a journey on a luxury yacht is not just about the destination – it’s about the entire charter experience , and that includes indulging in delicious cuisine prepared by talented chefs.
That’s why selecting a yacht based on the chef and supporting crew can be a wise decision. A talented chef can elevate your culinary experience to new heights, creating dishes that are not only delicious but also beautifully presented. And with the support of a skilled crew, you can be sure that every detail will be taken care of, from the freshest ingredients to the perfect wine pairings.
Of course, when it comes to yacht food, quality is everything, so we ensure all of our yachts for charter come with a reputation for excellence in this area. All with experienced chefs who have trained at top culinary schools and worked in some of the world’s most prestigious restaurants, your Ocean Independence Charter Broker can work with you to curate a charter tailored to your tastes.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A yacht charter promises luxury, indulgence and style – and the food is no exception. Think alfresco suppers beneath the stars, lazy seafood lunches on the aft deck, and bountiful breakfasts as you soak up the morning sun. Dining on board a yacht charter is down to your preference – whether you fancy a decadent sit-down feast around a well-adorned dining table, or a laid back picnic on the beach.
The meal times, ingredients, and dining style are all entirely down to you. By filling out the food preference form before your charter, your chef will be able to tailor each day’s menu to your personal taste, ensuring every dining experience exceeds expectations. And with a five-star crew at your disposal, you can even set the formality of your dining, from silver service suppers to more casual arrangements – the choice is yours.
Dining on board a charter yacht is an experience in itself, recreating the luxury restaurant experience from the privacy and seclusion of your own vessel.
Ensuring an Idyllic Charter, from Start to Finish
A perfect charter experience is about more than the yacht. It’s about the location, the crew, the food and the opportunities throughout the duration of your vacation. It’s about making memories that will last a lifetime.
If you want to make sure your next charter is the best yet, get in touch with our charter broker team, who will be more than happy to help create your idyllic yacht charter.

From world-renowned restaurants to hidden local gems, you'll have the opportunity to embark on a culinary adventure like no other.
It is little wonder that Sicily serves us such fantastic food. Geographically and historically it is a melting pot with influences from the many invaders and conquerors over the centuries set on a strong Italian base. Add to this the fertile soil, thanks to the beloved Mt Etna, along with the seriously long sunshine hours and a surrounding sea loaded with seafood if you like food then Sicily should definitely be on the menu for your next luxury yacht charter.
Sicily's home-grown produce are a rich and varied spread, ranging from olives, grapes, bright oranges and lemons to tasty cheeses and cured meats. Seafood, including swordfish and sepia (cuttlefish), is another staple of the diet with pasta with sardines and fennel (con finnochio e sarde) being a local favourite. Couscous, enjoyed especially in the west of the island, is an example of Sicily's mixed food heritage.

2. St Barts
St Bart's is a paradise for gourmets and foodies alike. With over 80 restaurants there are lots of choices from high-end five-star establishments to funky sidewalk cafes and beachside bistros. French-inspired but with a Caribbean flair and using the freshest of local seafood along with the finest of imported ingredients eating in St Barts is a real treat. You are sure to find a restaurant for every occasion. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten track, sand-in-your-toes type eatery then try La Gloriette's and while you're there don't forget to sample some of their home-made rum. .
For a seaside view with a lot more elegance and exquisite fine food then go to the romantic Michelin-starred On-the-Rocks at Eden Rock. For a more relaxed but still trend-setting place to hang out and enjoy the food and view head to the world-famous Nikki Beach. Or check out the long-time favourite that is Jimmy Buffet's Le Select, inspiration for the Cheeseburger in Paradise song. There's also constantly new places opening up such as the French-Japanese Fusion Orega and La Guerite (sister to the restaurant of the same name near Cannes) to inspire the locals and visiting gourmands alike

3. Mallorca
Mallorcan cuisine, based on its delicious local produce, seafood and pork, with lashings of garlic and olive oil, is hearty peasant fare steeped in tradition. There are some wonderful food specialities only found in the Balearics . Breakfast may include an 'Ensaimada' - this is a delicious spiral yeast bun dusted with sugar and sometimes filled with fruit and/or custard. For lunch you might try some cocarrois (delicious local pasties with a variety of savoury fillings), trampos (vegetable cheese-less pizza slices) or pa'amb oli (mallorquin bread with garlic, tomato, olive oil, served with cured ham or cheese).
Mallorca also has their own sausages: sobrassada is made of a mixture of minced pork with paprika, while botifarro, more akin to an English black pudding, is made with pork and liver and flavoured with aniseed. Both are traditional delicacies that have been made on the island for centuries. We are of course in Spain and tapas are a must – with lots of restaurants serving everything from traditional to more modern innovative fare. And of course there are restaurants a plenty here and some very fine ones with no less than 7 Michelin-starred establishments on the island.

4. Anguilla
Without a doubt Anguilla is a culinary destination with great food (think huge, fresh lobsters) and five-star super high-end restaurants. The scenery here is stunning with 33 striking beaches and a remoteness that is charming. The most memorable meals are likely to be found at a relaxed restaurant either on or overlooking one of these gorgeous beaches and the luminous sea that laps against them.
There are some great restaurants to try including Veya, set in a tropical, treehouse setting to Jacala for a true Caribbean-French fusion experience. And while your on board chef will no doubt have many ideas about using the fresh lobster here we do suggest popping across to Scilly Cay for lunch. The Cay, although uninhabited has a delicious daytime restaurant that serves only three things: grilled lobster, grilled chicken, and grilled crayfish.

5. Santorini
Greek people are passionate about food and very proud of their culinary traditions Much of Greek food is widely known around the world – souvlaki and tzatziki, spanakopita and baklava, and of course the ubiquitous Greek salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onion, feta cheese and olives seasoned with oregano and dressed with olive oil. But Santorini , the small crescent shaped island in the southern Aegean offers a cuisine like no other. The island is seriously dry however despite the arid conditions the volcanic soil yields some yummy riches from tiny, aromatic cherry tomatoes to their famous fava beans and uniquely white aubergines.
The tough-skinned but intense tomatoes are a key ingredient in one of the island's most famous and delicious specialities, domatokeftedes, or tomato fritters combining crumbly feta cheese and fresh herbs with the tomoatoes. While the fava beans are made into a delightful light mash covered with butter, chopped onions, capers and a dash of sweet paprika. And if good food with a spectacular view is what you are looking for then the many restaurants perched on the side of the cliff offer this in abundance.

6. Singapore
If you love Asian food then Singapore is the place to go. Due to its location and historical background it is melting pot of cultures with especially strong Chinese, Indian and Malay influences, as well as European influences. This produces some of the tastiest treats in this region if not the world, with a range of dishes from the authentically traditional to modern punchy fusion food with a unique Singaporean twist.
While there is any number of remarkable restaurants to try Singapore is most known in food circles for its markets or hawker centres where legendary vendors offer tasty bowls of rice and noodles, curries and claypots. Don't miss trying the chilli crab at least once, although we doubt once will be enough!

Share - Facebook | Twitter | Pinterest | Email
10 months ago Mara Benton
The world’s most expensive super mega yachts currently on the charter market come with a hefty charter rental fee but offer some of the top of the line and over the top amenities.
Their price tag will include state-of-the-art amenities such as swimming pools, helipads, incredible wellness centers, an array of sea toys and all with five-star service by their crew. Offering an outrageous style of living, they have catered to some of the most influential and famous people worldwide. From Presidents, world leaders to pop and rock stars the charter clientele of these yachts are the movers and shakers of the world all willing to pay incredible sums of money to charter a super mega yacht . Charter these luxury floating palaces all over the world from the Maldives, Thailand, Seychelles, Caribbean, Mediterranean and beyond.
We start with the FLYING FOX , built by the German shipyard Lurssen, at a mere 446 feet in length which claims to be the largest of all charter yachts. She accommodates up to 25 passengers in 11 spacious double suites. You can find aboard her five decks two helipads, a 12-meter-long swimming pool and an indoor Jacuzzi. There is a spectacular two-story 400 sq mt spa that includes a steam room, Cryo-sauna, hammam and spa room. One can also work out in her fully equipped gym and take a dip in the 12 meter swimming pool. Further entertainment needs can be met by curling up in front of a fireplace, catching a movie in her cinema with D-box seating that mimics the action on screen or visiting the beauty salon to be fully pampered. She has a lovely beach club and boasts an extraordinary collection of sea toys and six tenders. The Flying Fox is easily accessed using her helipads and once aboard there is an indoor elevator to traverse her multi levels. She certainly offers an action-packed vacation serviced by a professional crew of 55. Her weekly charter rate is Euro 3,000,000/week and a security deposit is required of 200,000 Euros.
OCTOPUS comes in just a bit smaller than FLYING FOX at 414 feet in length. Even with all her size and a crew of 42, she only accommodates up to 12 passengers in 13 suites. So why are these yachts so expensive to charter? There are many factors involved but the main cost is the cost of building. Most of these yachts are designed and built by the best of all naval architects and shipyards in the world. The craftsmanship found aboard is incomparable. Due to the large size of these yacht, as you elevate in size the entire volume of the yacht increases and expenses double, triple if not a lot more, per foot. The larger the yacht the higher the running expenses get, and more crew are required to give the five-star experience expected by all guests. The larger they are the more sea toys and onboard amenities are expected. Therefore, fully well outfitted and maintained gyms, saunas, hammam
s are all expected. Pool, Jacuzzi’s, and helipads are part of the normal build. Part of the five-star service include gourmet food and often the chef has worked in Michelin star restaurants. A week’s cruise can cost astronomical fees as all the menus are personally created to the clients’ desires. The high ratio of crew to clients helps provide outstanding service for all. Part of the crew is often a masseuse, hair stylist, yoga and gym instructors or certified dive instructors; all there to improve the wellness experience.
If the largest and biggest yacht, top of the line, outrageous amenities and pure luxury is required for your next yacht vacation in the Mediterranean, then maybe one of these mega yachts will be on your list.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?
There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).
The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.
The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)
Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.
What else can you expect to pay? This overview – a part of our planning resource, the Charter Advice Guide – offers an in-depth look at charter yacht costs.
Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”
In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:
- All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
- Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.
Our chart below offers a quick overview of what’s included in both of these types of charters.
Average Yacht Charter Cost: Base Prices
What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:
Average Weekly Sailing Charter Rates | Sailing Yacht |
---|---|
Average Weekly Catamaran Charter Rates | Catamaran |
Average Weekly Motor Yacht Charter Rates | Motor Yachts |
Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices
Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:
- The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
- Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
- Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters, BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.
Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter
In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:
Advanced Provisioning Allowance
The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.
In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.
Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)
Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:
- The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
- BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
- Croatia – VAT: 13%
- Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
- France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
- Greece – VAT: 12%
- Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
- Montenegro – NO VAT
- New England – NO TAX
- Spain – VAT: 21%
- Turkey – NO VAT
Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.
Crew Gratuity
While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.
Delivery Fees
While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

Additional Charter Cost FAQs
What are standard private charter yacht prices?
There are a number of factors that affect charter yacht pricing. However, on average, a week-long private yacht charter costs anywhere from $10,000 on luxurious sailing yachts and catamarans, and up to $150,000 for superyachts.
What affects charter yacht prices?
There are several things that influence how much your yacht charter will cost. The type of vessel, charter destination, length of trip, base cost, time of year, and local taxes all make a difference.
How much does it cost for a crewed vessel?
Charter yacht prices do increase when hiring a crew along with the boat. At Worldwide Boat, we offer two types of crewed charter experiences: all-inclusive and plus expenses. An all-inclusive charter yacht includes accommodation for all guests, food and drink, water sport activities, and fuel costs – dockage fees and taxes are charged separately. A plus expenses experience accounts for just the yacht’s base price. Things like food, drinks, fuel, dockages, taxes, and other expenses are charged separately and are usually estimated to be about 35% of the base price.
What’s included in all-inclusive boat charters?
At Worldwide Boat, your all-inclusive charter experience includes a diligent and friendly crew, water toys, food, drinks, fuel, water and electric services, and occasionally diving experiences.
What are some additional charter boat costs to consider?
After finding a base price you’re comfortable with and evaluating your package, you’ll also want to consider delivery fees, crew gratuity, insurance fees, taxes, and Advanced Provisioning Allowance rates. If you are responsible for these fees, your crew will handle the necessary transactions on your behalf.
What does it cost to rent a 100- foot yacht charter?
This depends on what type of vessel you’re looking at and how long you’ll need it for. The average weekly cost of a 100-foot sailing yacht is between $50,000-100,000. A weekly 80-foot catamaran charter runs around $40,000-100,000, and a week-long 100-foot motor yacht rental is anywhere between $50,000-80,000.
Does the price to rent a yacht change depending on what type of boat it is?
Yes. Worldwide Boat offers sailing yachts, catamarans, and motor yachts. All of these vessels have different capabilities, but there are other factors that determine the price beyond what type of boat you choose. The year the boat was built, owner, availability of water toys, onboard amenities, and the ship’s reputation can all change how much the ship is priced at.
When is the high season for yacht charters?
The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.
How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?
The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.
How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?
It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

7 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Yacht Chefs
On a mega-yacht, 100-hour work weeks are the norm.
Jeremy Glass is a freelance journalist and copywriter based in Maine. He covers arts and entertainment, lifestyle, food, drinks, and travel, among other topics.
Below Deck sailed onto the scene in 2013, leaving in its wake a sea change across reality television as a genre. Audiences tuned in to the show—and its many offspring—to get a first-hand account of the $175,000-per-week charter trips of such exalted guests as Roy Orbison Jr. and the Queen of Versailles.
What separates shows like Below Deck from other reality programming is the amount of unrestricted access into the lives of people making a living mixing drinks and cooking five-star dinners for the exorbitantly wealthy. So, just how real is this account of luxury on the open ocean? "Poor management, poor behavior, bad seamanship," says David Skolnick, an accomplished yacht chef. "I've never seen the sorts of shenanigans they show in real life."
I spoke to real-life yacht chefs to find out what it's really like cooking at sea.
Restaurant experience is not required
Rachel Cunningham grew up in New Zealand, but spend the better part of her life exploring the world. "Yachting allows me to travel and get paid for it," says the 32-year-old chef. "The world is my home, and super yachts are just part of my commute." Cunningham dabbled in a lot of industries before settling into the yacht life—travel agent, tech journalist, website developer—but never thought about pursuing a culinary degree before becoming a yacht chef.
"I always had an interest in cooking, but never really considered going to culinary school," says Cunningham. "Nothing about that appealed to me. The high cost of the education followed by low wages and an unsociable career afterward? No thanks. I kept cooking as a passion. While I traveled, I would stop in small villages and watch locals preparing food."
She "knuckled down" after her first yachting job, spending weeks meticulously studying cookbooks and researching recipes online.
"I worked late as often as I could trying new techniques and learning more about high-end ingredients," she says. "I was so hungry for information and wanted to be better. The great thing about yachting is that once you have your foot in the door, and you persevere and work hard, you can continue upwards easily."
Skolnick is self-taught, as well. "Initially, I learned from public television: Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, Martin Yan, Frugal Gourmet, and others," he says.
The hours are brutal
"I've worked on busy yachts where it was not uncommon to work 16 hour days 7 days a week while on charter," says Cunningham. "It's easier to do when you are younger, but it's not sustainable and many yacht crew burn out working like that."
She adds, "A more realistic yacht experience would entail a yacht chef working 12 hour days, 7 days a week while looking out of the porthole at a gorgeous white sand beach but never going ashore."
... but the tips are ridiculous.
Cunningham has a friend who made a charter tip of "just under $40k per crew member … with more than 30 crew working." That's about a million dollars in tips total.
The day-to-day isn't that much different from a hotel
Cunningham's day usually starts at 6 a.m., where she heads from her room to the galley to prep breakfast and get organized. She values mornings as the only part of the day where she can make coffee and gather her thoughts.
Pastries go in the oven, guest are made fruit platters and charcuterie boards, which are sent out with the stewardesses. In the event kids are on board, Cunningham will pull out pancake and waffle batter—because what kind of kid doesn't want pancakes and waffles? Unlike Below Deck , Cunningham's been fortunate enough to work with a sous chef; they come in around 8 a.m. to work on crew lunch and dinners. From there, breakfast is made, the galley is cleaned, lunch and dinner get prepped, and so on until the guest is full.
"Depending on the guests, we can close the galley down as early as 8 p.m. or as late as 1 a.m. when we have party guests on," she says. "I've worked on yachts where it's normal to get a phone call at 2 a.m. for wagyu burgers or chocolate brownies because the guests have the munchies. It can be quite demanding."
You can't just pop out for sugar on the sea
One of the most difficult aspects of being a yacht chef is knowing that you can't just pop out over to the corner shop when you run out of an ingredient. "In general I start with Google," says Skolnick. "Online shopping and curbside pickup is the silver lining of COVID. In particularly limited places, or where the language problem is significant, I'll use a yacht agent. The key is flexibility in the face of substitutions."
"I once bartered sheets of gold leaf with micro herbs with another yacht while in Antigua," says Cunningham. "You have to get creative and really think outside the box."
Skolnick notes that the yacht kitchens are exceptionally small, so creativity is paramount: "Limited tools. Limited power. Limited space. Limited storage. Limited shopping," he says. But you make it work. "One of my mentors, chef Bernie Meehan, told me 'a good cook can make anything, anywhere, with anything.'"
The meals are as good as they look
"We source ingredients from all of the world for our guests," says Cunningham. "I use a variety of provisioners to do this, some of them specialize in high-end products from Japan and parts of Europe. None of it is cheap! I just did an order for some wagyu strip loins for $100 a piece. We get the best caviar, sometimes spending tens of thousands of dollars on it, especially when we have Russian guests. Truffles are pretty much standard. It is pure decadence. Of course, if we get really stuck and need things delivered ASAP, there are always the boss's helicopter on the aft deck to use."
Charter guests aren't all that bad
Below Deck is one of those shows that puts the … rampant insanity of the rich and famous on display for the rest of the world. Obviously, not every guest is a Doris—in fact, some of them can be pretty darn cool.
On one of Cunningham's favorite charters, the guests "were so friendly with the crew," she says. "The kids would run into the galley every morning to watch us cook, and the adults always had a glass of red wine in their hands. One night the men came into the galley to ask why they chefs were not drinking (we do not drink at sea, or on the job, as a rule). They thrust a $1500 bottle of red wine at us and demanded we share a drink with them. It was a lovely gesture, and I was all too happy to oblige. After all, the guest gets what the guest wants, and who am I to turn down a beautiful bottle of full bodied red wine at 11 p.m. after working 14 hours straight?"

The mega yacht reportedly owned by "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling recently made a few stops at U.S. ports, causing local buzz along the way.
The writer's yacht, a vessel called the Samsara, was first spotted earlier this month off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida , according to Fits News. It then docked in Savannah, Georgia, until June 8, before making its way up the coast to Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

It is unclear whether Rowling was onboard the super yacht during its travels to the Southern states. FOX Business has reached out to the author's publicist for further details.
According to Superyachtfan.com, the Samara is 290 feet long and was built in 2015 by Oceanco. The vessel has seven cabins for holding up to 14 guests, along with another 13 cabins for housing up to 27 crew members.

Rowling is the world's wealthiest author , with an estimated net worth of around $1 billion, according to a recent report by The Sun. However, she was famously booted from the Forbes billionaire list in 2012 after her charitable giving led to her net worth falling below that mark.
