Murena 30 is a 29 ′ 8 ″ / 9.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Håkan Södergren and built by Boatsman Sunsail between 1972 and 1980.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Murena

Basic specs..

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Bukh DV10M diesel engine at 12.0 hp (8 kW), which gives a max speed about 4.6 knots.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Murena is 2.18, indicating that this boat would not be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.4 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Murena is about 149 kg/cm, alternatively 835 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 149 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 835 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Selva D.600 Special and Murena 40 XSR Sea Trial

  • Michele Dwamena
  • December 10, 2019

Selva D.600 Special and Murena 40 XSR E.F.I. Horizons are broadened without a license

Fitted with a 40HP outboard, she can exceed 30 knots! Presented in world premiere at the Genoa International Boat Show, the new Selva D.600 Special measures 6 meters but is powerful, spacious and performing.

We tested her with a Murena 40XSR E.F.I outboard and it was a real surprise .

The Selva D.600 Special in detail

After casting the mooring lines off and leaving the port, what is surprising about the Selva D.600 Special is undoubtedly the arrangement of the spaces available that one can fully realize only after climbing on board. This RIB is a well-designed boat which ensures a good circulation on board, although the 6 meters of length might suggest the opposite. The walkways are wide and, as the homologation suggests, the seats really give the impression of being able to accommodate up to a dozen passengers if necessary. Once climbed on board, we have no difficulty in stowing two big bags and our sailing jackets under the pilot seat, in what, at first sight, looks like a small locker but which, at a later stage, has proved to be a really large and deep compartment with excellent storage capacity.

selva d.600 Genoa Boat Show

In this 6-meter boat, the spaces are larger than expected and the contrast between the doubts about the dimensions and the reality of the boat is the leitmotiv of our sea trial.

The bow can even accommodate a large sun pad thanks to a removable cushion which, when necessary, can be placed in one of the lockers available. There is also a small bow-facing seat positioned just in front of the steering console. The stern, instead, houses two platforms thanks to which passengers can easily get on and off the boat also though a bathing ladder positioned on the left side.

Finally in the water

selva d.600, console

On board, we are three and, with us, there is also Carlo Selva who quickly leaves us take the helm. With a maximum load capacity of 1,150 kg, the boat is carrying the average weight of three people (around 220 kg) in addition to the 119 kg of the engine and 30 liters of fuel.

Once the cruising speed is reached, we enjoy the sea which is not very rough today. Continuing our navigation, we get the boat on plane at 3,100 rpm and 13 knots; then, we go on accelerating until we reach 4,000 rpm and 18.3 knots.

It is interesting how, despite the increasing speed, none of us feel the need to cling to the console or use handrails, as proof of the great stability offered by the boat. Precisely at this point, it’s not enough for us to certify the good average speed of the boat and, by holding the notebook tightly, we put the gas throttle all down.

At 5,000 rpm, we are running at a speed of 24 knots but we decide to speed up a little more to see how the new Selva Marine’s RIB will react, fitted with this 40HP outboard. We put away our notebooks, this time fearing they may be kidnapped by the wind, and we reach 6,200 rpm. In a few seconds, to our great astonishment, we reach the surprising speed of 31.8 knots.

selva d.600, outboard

The D.600 Special is a fast boat. The performance she offers when fitted with a 40HP engine are stunning. It would be interesting to see how the il D.600 Special would act if she was fitted with a more powerful outboard, since she can be powered by engines of up to 171HP.

Murena 40XSR E.F.I.

selva d.600, murena 40

The Murena 40XSR E.F.I. is a 4-cylinder 16-valve engine designed to deliver unexpected performance at sea.

Conclusions

The Selva D.600 Special is an inflatable boat for everyone, designed and developed to offer, within just 6 meters, great comfort and excellent performance. When coupled with the Murena 40XSR E.F.I. engine, she can be driven with no license.

This boat is therefore the ideal companion to enjoy wonderful days at sea with your family and friends as well as great freedom of movement on board. When fitted with more powerful engines, it is destined to deliver really exciting performance.

THE BOOK “BUYING A SAILBOAT FROM A TO Z AND SAILING TO THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA”

In addition, I offer my existing guide to buying a sailboat. The book is an inherent part of the course; I suggest that they complement each other.

When you read the book your dream gradually turns into a step-by-step plan – you get a precise understanding and a plan to make this dream come true.

It has taken a huge amount of work to finish this book. I have been writing it for 1 year, while the information for it was gathered throughout 10 years of my sailing life.

All the themes and questions are answered with comments, I tried to tell everything I know from A to Z. Besides, after you read the book, you can ask me any questions you have — the consultation for my readers is totally free.

SPECIAL OFFER: THE PACKAGE

Enter your email to purchase the package. After payment you will receive access by email.

A STEP-BY-STEP PLAN

By following this plan step by step, you can make your dream of your own sailboat come true. This is real!

Step 1. Buy the package

Buy the package: the course “A small sailboat captain” and my book with all the bonuses included.

Watch the course “A small sailboat captain” to find out how to handle a sailboat, what to check while purchasing and how to service the sailboat.

It’s also worth getting some practice in a class or with an experienced captain.

Read the book; it helps you to understand what kind of sailboat you need. You will find out your aims and make a plan to make this dream real.

Step 4. Buy a sailboat

Buy your own sailboat and I will help you online: you can text me your options with photos and a description and I will help you to understand which offer is good and which isn’t.

Step 5. Prepare the sailboat and get your own experience

You can sail in the Baltics, test the sailboat and prepare it for longer passages. I will tell you the place to moor the sailboat for only 200 euro for the whole season.

ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE

I have tried to answer the questions you may have.

The course gives core knowledge about yachting (the programme is similar to RYA or IYT but it is closer to practice and real issues). It also includes the information needed to purchase based on my own experience, i.e. I prepare you for owning a sailboat, not for a charter.

The course consists of short videos and each theme is a separate video. The information is easier to take in due to this format, plus you can easily find a particular theme to re-watch and spend 5–15 minutes refreshing your memory.

The course consists of 287 videos. For each topic we have a separate video from 2 to 30 minutes. Total duration of the course is 27 hours. The course has been done for more than six months, and a really big job has been done!

The course is focused on being an owner of a small sailboat (7–12 metres); these are the sailboats I usually show on my social networks.

Most yachting schools teach you based on the idea that you will rent a sailboat in the future. Besides, handling a small sailboat differs from handling the big sailboats which are used for practice in such schools. For example, setting the sails is done a bit differently, moorage processes differ and so on.

This is the knowledge you will not receive in most schools!

In my opinion, after you finish this course you will be more ready to own and make passages on a small sailboat. It is not self-advertisement, it is my point of difference. I am making the course for a certain purpose and it is different from the purpose of the schools. This course is made for the members of our societies in social networks; my aim is to tell you about all the nuances you will need to know.

What if I want to get an IYT (or similar) certificate?

You can undertake the practice in any school after watching the course, you will only need to pass the practice there.

I also have a very good instructor with a lot of experience of off-shore passages on different sailboats (her last passage lasted for almost 2 months – it was an ocean cruise without stops and she went from the Canaries to Capetown).

Her prices are reasonable and I can forward you to her. Just contact me on social networks after you finish the theory.

What is the book “Buying a sailboat from A to Z and sailing to the Mediterranean Sea on it” about?

This book gives you a step-by-step plan for buying an inexpensive but good sailboat in Europe. I give all the information from A to Z. What is more, the book tells how to prepare your sailboat for a passage shortly and sail it from Sweden to the Mediterranean Sea.

In what format is the guide: is it a paper book or an e-book?

The book is electronic, it works on any device with browser, both online and offline (after the first download). Due to this solution you receive the book as soon as you purchased it and I can update it and add some more details (I'm doing it rather often).

To sum up: buying the book now you're getting all the future updates for free.

What if I already read the book?

Check your email, I sent a special offer for my readers. If you didn't receive it - please contact me on Facebook , on Instagram or by email. Instagram

How can I receive help while purchasing a sailboat?

Just contact me on social networks and tell me your situation, I’ll do my best to help you.

How can I purchase the package?

Can I buy the book only?

Yes, you can purchase the book on my site https://how-to-buy-sailboat.com/ but my recommendation is to purchase the whole package because the course and the book complement one another. Passing this course makes sense for you even if you are a professional sailor on a big bulk carrier because a bulk carrier and a sailboat are really very different and you will face completely new situations.

Even if you already took IYT or RYA courses you will find a lot of useful information in my course as well: my course contains a lot of information about choosing a sailboat, nuances while purchasing and maintenance.

What is more, in most schools they teach to handle some mainstream sailboats, but the smaller yachts which I usually show you on social networks have their own nuances. I talk about these nuances in this course as well.

Why should I purchase the package even if I don’t have financial capacity to buy a sailboat now?

You should go for your dream even if you do it slowly, even if you can't see how to reach it. And if you can't reach it right now you should aim towards your dream. In this particular case you do the first step. Usually it’s the most difficult one. Further on, life usually gives us some options and possibilities.

To sum up, you now have an option to do the first step. Will you do it?

A review by Alex Gridin

Alex bought my book, prepared for a sailboat purchase, bought a sailboat with the help of the book, made a route and sailed from Sweden to Tunisia with my remote help in 2019.

Singapore works to clean up oil slick after boat collides with stationary fuel supply ship

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — An oil spill caused by a dredger boat hitting a stationary cargo tanker has blackened part of Singapore’s southern coastline, including the popular resort island of Sentosa, and sparked concerns it may threaten marine wildlife as a clean-up operation was underway Sunday.

The Netherlands-flagged dredger Vox Maxima struck the Singaporean fuel supply ship Marine Honor on Friday. It damaged the cargo tank on Marine Honor, which leaked oil into the sea.

READ MORE: Officials warn of ‘environmental disaster’ after attack on cargo ship in Red Sea causes oil slick

Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement late Saturday the oil leak from the vessel had been contained, and that the oil that escaped from the damaged tanker had been treated with dispersants.

But due to the tidal current, it said the treated oil had landed along shorelines including at Sentosa and other southern islands, a nature reserve and a public beach park. Sentosa, which attracts millions of visitors annually, houses one of Singapore’s two casinos, golf courses and Southeast Asia’s only Universal Studios theme park.

Part of the beachfront at the public park and at the nature reserve have been closed to facilitate clean-up efforts, it said. The Sentosa beach will remain open to the public but sea activities and swimming are prohibited.

On Sunday, workers in orange suit were seen scooping up sand in a clean-up operation at an empty beach in Sentosa. Black water washed up on the oil-stained shore.

Authorities have deployed 18 crafts for the clean-up efforts and laid close to 1,500 meters of container booms, temporary floating barriers to trap the oil spill.

“More will be laid over the next few days to prevent further spread of oil onto the shore, and facilitate the recovery of the trapped oil off the affected shorelines and lagoons to prevent them from going back to sea,” the statement said.

Conservationists and biologists are monitoring the full extent of the damage on marine and wildlife.

Local conservation group Marine Stewards reportedly said there were photos of dead fish, otters and kingfishers covered in oil slick.

Group founder Sue Ye told Singapore Straits Times that oil spills smother and suffocate fish, birds and marine animals that have to go to the surface for air, such as turtles and dolphins.

US submarine pulls into Guantanamo Bay a day after Russian warships arrive in Cuba

WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. Navy submarine has arrived in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in a show of force as a fleet of Russian warships gather for planned military exercises in the Caribbean.

U.S. Southern Command said the USS Helena, a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine, pulled into the waters near the U.S. base in Cuba on Thursday, just a day after a Russian frigate, a nuclear-powered submarine, an oil tanker and a rescue tug crossed into Havana Bay after drills in the Atlantic Ocean.

The stop is part of a “routine port visit” as the submarine travels through Southern Command’s region, it said in a social media post.

Other U.S. ships also have been tracking and monitoring the Russian drills, which Pentagon officials say do not represent a threat to the United States.

“This is not a surprise. We’ve seen them do these type of port calls before,” Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh said Wednesday when asked about the Russian drills. “We of course take it seriously, but these exercises don’t pose a threat to the United States.”

The exercises, however, come less than two weeks after President Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-provided weapons to strike inside Russia to protect Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Russian President Vladimir Putin then suggested his military could respond with “asymmetrical steps” elsewhere in the world.

Singh said it wouldn’t be a surprise to see more Russian activity around the United States in such global exercises. The drills are in international waters, and U.S. officials expect the Russian ships to remain in the region through the summer and possibly also stop in Venezuela.

Russia is a longtime ally of Venezuela and Cuba, and its warships and aircraft have periodically made forays into the Caribbean.

Russian ships have occasionally docked in Havana since 2008, when a group of Russian vessels entered Cuban waters in what state media described as the first such visit in almost two decades. In 2015, a reconnaissance and communications ship arrived unannounced in Havana a day before the start of discussions between U.S. and Cuban officials on the reopening of diplomatic relations.

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 19: Demi Moore and her dog Pilaf attend a photocall at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at the Carlton Cannes Hotel on May 19, 2024 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

“I had someone who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”
