In 1988,  Sailing World   magazine created a national one-design regatta series that was an immediate success with its unique concept of racing in larger production boats, unrivaled post-racing social experiences and professional race management. Now named the Helly Hansen  Sailing World Regatta Series, the events are the most popular racing weekends in the United States and encompass more than the larger one-design boats. Embracing popular fleets at each location, fleets now include dinghies, multihulls, and keelboats that all compete under established handicap systems for both buoy and distance races. Sponsors and partners continue to engage and grow the sailing community at regatta socials with race videos, games, food and cocktails for all ages at the host yacht club every day after racing.

All Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series events are supported by premier host yacht clubs in renown sailing venues. At the conclusion of each regatta, one top-finishing team is selected to compete in the overall season championship, held in the British Virgin Islands in October. The Regatta Series is owned and managed by  Sailing World , a  Firecrown Media, Inc . property.

About the J/24

The J/24 is the most popular one-design keelboat in the world , and was admitted to SSA as a sponsored class in 1983. Designed to be stable enough for family sailing, and exciting enough to attract the world’s best sailors, the J/24 defines great one-design keelboat racing!

The Annapolis area has more than 50 local boats, with more than 25 actively racing each season. Exciting J/World Thursday-evening short-course racing runs from May through August, and a modest schedule of weekend racing at SSA begins in April and ends with the J/24 East Coast Championship the last weekend of October--where as many as 70 boats have competed. J/24s also participate in Annapolis Yacht Club Wednesday-night PHRF racing and the Eastport Yacht Club Friday-night Beer Can Series. SSA hosted the 1992 J/24 World Championship, while our neighbors up Spa Creek at Annapolis Yacht Club hosted the 2009 Worlds.

While the J/24 is not a dinghy, it is quick and responsive (and, from the crew point of view, is probably more fun to sail since there are no trapezes or hiking straps). The international class rules are very tight, designed to keep the 5,400 J/24s worldwide within fixed one-design limits. So as to keep the cost of sailing the J/24 within the financial reach of mere mortals, sail inventory is limited to four: one main, two jibs, and one spinnaker.

Good Sailing, Good Racing, Good Friends!

Our class is made up of men and women who share a love of sailing, racing, and friendship. In addition to enjoying competitive sailing, we routinely gather after racing to socialize and get to know our fellow racers better. We would love to have you join us, whether your interest is crewing or eventually owning a J/24.

While local J/24 racing is known to be hotly competitive, J/24 sailors are very interested in growing the class and want to be very helpful to those just starting out. It's not unusual to see some of the top sailors in the area showing newer owners and crews how to make their boats go faster. We are a class that wants to see everyone learn, be competitive, and have a good time too!

Crewing Opportunities

With 15 to 20 J/24s racing on most Thursdays during the summer, as well as occasional weekend races, there are ample opportunities to learn about the boat through crewing. The maximum crew weight is 882 lbs., and most boats sail with five crew members. Skippers are often looking for additional crew, so opportunities to get involved in J/24 sailing are definitely not limited to boat owners! Many of the best boats have women either as crew or at the helm.

The local fleet has a  Facebook Group  and  Crewfinder Group  on Facebook, which is used often by both skippers and crew. You can also contact SSA J/24 Fleet Captain Pat FitzGerald at 443-838-4095 if you are interested in crewing this season.

Ownership Opportunities

With numerous J/24s in the Annapolis and mid-Atlantic area there are opportunities to purchase a previously owned boat at very attractive prices. For example, for roughly $5,000 you can purchase a boat that may need a little work, but would be able to be very competitively raced.

Why We Race Sailboats in Winter aka “Frostbiting”

Posted January 5, 2022

Outside the Comfort Zone: Why We Frostbite Race as Sailors

To someone who prefers the couch to the cockpit when it’s wintry outside, the only question that makes sense to ask those who race sailboats or “frostbite race” is: “Why do you do it?” Yet, when you ask active frostbiters that question, their answers tend to make so much sense and exude so much enthusiasm that it makes you want to get up off the couch, gear up, and give it a try.

Winter sailboat racing chesapeake bay 1

Harbor 20 sailor Bell Carty has been frostbite racing in the Annapolis Yacht Club (AYC) series since the early 90s. She says, “The appeal of frostbiting is to be on the water. It’s a little outside of the comfort zone, but still fun! Bundling up can be fun—it’s cold but not too bad.”

McGinnis races his 1979 J/30 Blitz, also in Annapolis, and has done so for the past decade. “First and foremost, I appreciate and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere,” he says. “We are all out there to have fun and to try to improve on some aspect of sailing that we can carry over into the next season. I think all of us understand that ‘it’s just frostbite.’ Not that we aren’t competitive! I mean, we are sailors… of course, we are competitive!

“As a skipper, I really like the two-race format. It gives me an opportunity to really focus on positioning the boat during the start sequence. If I make a mistake, I can get right back on the start line for the second race and try it again.”

Winter sailboat racing chesapeake bay 2

Frist is a little bit newer to the game, having started her frostbite race career aboard her J/30 Suzie Q three or four years ago. She says, “I enjoy frostbiting because my crew and I can focus on fine tuning our basic skills (i.e. timing starts, trimming, and tactics) without having to deal with the spinnaker. We also don’t need as many crew to race in frostbites, so finding crew is a little easier.”

There’s no bad weather, only bad gear Frostbite sailors learn quickly what works best for them in terms of warmth and dryness. Carty wears her “old Musto and Helly Hansen foulies over Patagonia puff jacket and fuzzy pants. Now I wear an Army hat to support my cadet! Always a warm hat! Always gloves. Any kind that keeps your hands warm and fit properly.”

McGinnis says, “With the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve had lately, this is a hard question to answer! Heck, some days I’ve contemplated sailing in shorts! When the temperatures really drop, I have a pair of Harken neoprene gloves that I really like. I also wear some winter socks by Fox River that I got issued back when I was in the Army. They’re made from some kind of heavyweight wicking material that really does a great job of keeping your feet warm and dry.”

“I love my Dubarry Boots and my fleece ear flap cap from Duluth Trading Company,” says Frist. “I feel like I can withstand the cold temps no matter how low they go by keeping my feet and head warm! Other mainstays are fleece lined leggings, layers of tops, a warm foul weather jacket, full-fingered racing gloves, and good sunglasses.”

Winter Sailboat Racing chesapeake bay 3

There are tough days… About 10 years ago when he first started racing, McGinnis says, “I had a J/24 named SWAG. My crew and I decided to race the Hangover Bowl… Up to that point, my only experience racing was with the standard windward/leeward format during weekend regattas and Thursday nights with J/World. I had absolutely no experience finding my way around government marks. This particular Hangover Bowl, the temps were in the 20s or 30s, and the wind was howling and just brutally cold. Between the strong gusts, the cold air, and not having the first clue where I was on the racecourse, let’s just say our overall performance was less than impressive. We had fun and we learned a lot… but I was happy to get off the water!”

Frist says, “Every frostbite race has the stress of trying to make sure we can see all traffic, especially the tiny boats crossing our path. This is a challenge because we are not allowed to leave the cockpit.”

Carty shares a lighthearted cold-day memory: “When we were rigging the boat, we were scraping ice and snow off of it and launched with snow still in the cockpit. We had snowball fights and were laughing around the racecourse. The tough part that day was keeping your hands warm!”

Making amazing memories

One memorable day for McGinnis came early in the season. After making a smart decision to start closer to the seawall than the pin, he managed to stay in the pressure, put a substantial distance between his boat and the rest of the fleet, and score the bullet. “We had not had a good season up to that point, so the bullet was a much-needed morale boost, not just for me but for the crew,” he says. It changed the way his crew now approached the wind when it was coming down the Severn.

“The other thing that was reinforced that day is the value of having a quiet boat. As we were heading back from that win, my main trimmer leaned over and said, ‘Did you notice nobody was yelling?’ He was right. Everyone on the boat knew what they were doing. We were all focused on one thing: making the boat move fast…  Since then, I’ve done my utmost to recreate that environment every time we get on the racecourse. I’ve got a great crew. All I need to do is trust that they know what they are doing, get out of their way, let them do their job, and just drive the boat!”

Advice for would-be frostbite racers What would these sailors recommend to anyone interested in frostbite racing in the future?

McGinnis says, “I think the best way to get into frostbite racing is to get into Wednesday or Thursday night racing, and the best way to find a boat for Wednesday night or Thursday night racing is to list yourself on the SpinSheet Crew Finder list (spinsheet.com) or attend the SpinSheet Crew Party (in spring). I say this because there simply isn’t much room for extra crew during frostbite races (since) we aren’t using spinnakers and have to keep everyone inside the cockpit.” The idea is that once frostbite season rolls in, you’ll already be an active part of a team.

Frist says, “If someone wanted to get into frostbites as crew, dress warmly, and bring fun boat snacks! As a skipper, don’t use your best racing sails!”

Carty adds, “If you are interested, find someone doing it that can help you out. Go down to the dock, talk to people, and ask!” ~M.W.

Bailing with my bucket list

sailboat racing annapolis

“Honey? You there? I’m having phone issues,” I shouted, a finger plugging one ear.

“Where are you?” my husband, Francis, asked, struggling to hear through the loud music and voices surrounding me.

“Outside Bermuda Yacht Club — it’s the only place I can get a Wi-Fi signal. Listen …,” I continued, eager to relay an important update to my travel plans before my cell lost service.

Two days prior, I’d flown to Bermuda to meet up with the crew of Alliance, a 40-foot sailboat in the 2024 Newport to Bermuda Race, a bi-annual offshore competition involving more than 160 sailboats.

I wasn’t on the race team, but for nine months I’d been practicing and preparing to sail on Alliance’s return crew, tasked with sailing the boat back home to Rhode Island after the race. I’d dreamed of an opportunity like this since 2005, when I took beginner sailing lessons at the Norfolk Navy Base Marina. On weekends, Francis watched our three kids while I practiced in dinghies on Willoughby Spit, yearning to become a real sailor.

However, like most military spouses, my dreams came secondary to military life. After two summers of lessons, a PCS to Germany brought my sailing adventures to a screeching halt.

Three moves later, we were stationed in Newport, RI., where I took more lessons at the base marina, hoping I’d get the chance to apply all those lessons to real sailing.

Last summer, I was ready to give up, when I met Alliance’s skippers at a base social event. They invited me to be on Alliance’s delivery crew, including the return sail from the 2024 Bermuda race. Finally, I had my chance!

But as my luck would have it, the night before my flight to Bermuda to meet Alliance at the finish line, the boat struck an object in the Gulf Stream and sank. All crew abandoned ship and were rescued by another racing vessel.

I was crushed. Not only for my friends who’d be devastated by the loss of their sailboat, but also, selfishly, for me. I’d lost my opportunity to become a real sailor.

But maybe not.

“… I was offered a return crew position on another boat,” I yelled into my phone.

“What?!” Francis blurted. “You’re not going, right?”

“Alliance’s folks checked everything out. They say it’s a solid boat with an experienced skipper. We’ll be safe, so I’m going,” I said loudly.

Francis was not happy.

We sailed out of Hamilton Harbor aboard Heart of Gold, headed for Annapolis, Md. I shared a berth and responsibilities with another female crew mate named Lisa Schmitt. They named us Schmitty and Mo, and put us to work.

On the third day, southerly winds became northerly, as a low pressure front met us in the Gulf Stream. Switching from a port to starboard tack, all hell broke loose. Waves rose to 12 feet, wind gusted to 30 knots and a squall unleashed buckets of rain. But on Day 5, we made it to the Chesapeake Bay, surfing following seas and fair winds all the way to Annapolis.

Stepping onto the dock that night after 750 miles at sea, I was filled with gratitude for the hands-on, intense learning experience I’d dreamed of for two decades. I’d done it. I was a real sailor.

“You still mad?” I asked gently after Francis picked me up at the Providence Airport. He shook his head, but the look on his face told otherwise.

A couple of days later, I couldn’t take it anymore. “Clearly, you’re still upset, so let’s have it out!” I blurted. I hated fighting with Francis, but this was necessary. I braced myself for a doozy.

Words flew like flying fish, none of them landing on deck until I said tearfully, “Why can’t you be happy for me? You’ve done so many things while I was home with the kids — white-water rafting on the Nile, flying in a sea plane in Alaska, looking for poachers in a helicopter in Botswana, …” I went on, naming the wild adventures Francis had had during 28 years on active duty. His face suddenly softened.

“I’m sorry,” he said, hugging me, finally realizing that I was entitled to chase my dreams, too.

The First Annual Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival is in the Books

By: Zeke Quezada, ASA American Sailing Vacations , Flotillas

I strolled along the sandy shores of Anegada as a Caribbean squall swept over the island. The rain fell heavily, yet the sudden chill was oddly refreshing. The scene around me resembled something from a travel brochure.

Another American sailor who had joined us for the Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival flotilla approached me on the deserted beach. His floppy hat shielded his face from the downpour.

As we passed each other, he grinned. “It doesn’t get better than this.”

If there were words to capture the essence of this flotilla, it would be those simple yet profound words.

Sailing has a way of making any moment perfect. On that beach in Anegada, the entire journey seemed to find its definition.

Fourteen boats, 85 guests, and numerous islands to explore—this was what the Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival was all about. It celebrated sailing while honoring the legacy of American Sailing Founder Lenny Shabes. When a group of sailors gathers, you can imagine the tales spun over rum drinks. Whether on catamaran decks or sandy beaches, we all became part of the American Sailing Family in the British Virgin Islands.

sailboat racing annapolis

The Raft Up

Our lead captain from the American Sailing School Sailing Virgins organized a sailor’s paradise—a raft where our boats formed a floating alley off Prickly Pear. The music blared, and swimmers danced inventively in the water. The jovial antics of sailors reached their peak as the Rum Runner arrived, elevating the energy on every boat and the water itself. Grills were fired up, flotation devices tossed into the water, and the biggest open-water pool party many of us had ever seen ensued.

sailboat racing annapolis

The Regatta

Fifteen Hobie Cats set sail to compete in the inaugural Lenny Shabes Hobie Cat Regatta. While the winner was uncertain, everyone was too engrossed in the fun to mind the outcomes. Rumor had it the PhD in Meteorology took the race, but no sailor would admit to losing. The Bitter End Yacht Club hosted the race and a bonfire party that stretched into the night. Dinner, drinks, and dancing on the beach solidified friendships that felt lifelong after racing Hobie Cats together.

The Willy T

No trip to the British Virgin Islands is complete without a visit to the Willy T. People leaped off the back, singing and dancing as the day melted away. Our day began with a floating party aboard the lead American Sailing Catamaran and ended with farewells under a full moon, accompanied by a small glow party.

The Lenny Shabes Sailing Festival in the British Virgin Islands marked the first-ever celebration of American Sailing’s founder, Lenny Shabes. At its core, the festival embodied the spirit of sailing and camaraderie among sailors. It was more than just an event; it was a gathering of our sailing family, a heartfelt tribute to the sport we cherish, and a joyous celebration of the sea.

Radio Controlled Sailing Program

Whether you have a 20-foot keelboat or a 40-foot racer-cruiser, sometimes it’s a struggle to get crew, get the boat launched, keep your sail inventory fresh, etc. So if you’re looking for a way to get involved on the water on a smaller scale, RC (radio controlled) boat racing may be the way to go. AYC’s membership includes owners of various styles of RC boats including the popular CR914, E12, Solings, Lasers, and DF95s.

Restaurants, food and drink, restaurants, food and drink | 5 baltimore scoop shops to help beat the heat and enjoy national ice cream day.

An ice cream cone melts at Prigel Family Creamery, a farm located in Glen Arm.

Baltimore has its ice cream heavyweights: I will always say yes to a scoop of salted caramel Old Bay at The Charmery or some honey graham at Taharka Bros. The blueberry soft serve at Bmore Licks (one of dozens of flavors) always reminds me of family trips to Maine.

But the city has some lesser known scoop shops that are worth a visit, as well. In honor of National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, we highlighted five sweet spots.

Always Ice Cream Co.

Do you have trouble picking a flavor when confronted with a freezer case full of ice cream options? I do — especially when there are more than a dozen to choose from.

Luckily, Always Ice Cream Co. understands this particular dilemma. That’s why they posted a motto above their ice cream counter: “If the decision was easy it wouldn’t be fun.”

The scoop shop with origins in Anne Arundel County opened its first Baltimore store, in the Village of Cross Keys, over Memorial Day weekend.  Customers can choose from 20 dairy-based flavors — or “flavas,” as the menu board calls them — as well as six vegan ones.

There are classics like pistachio, mint chocolate chip and Neapolitan (which here is simply called vanilla, chocolate, strawberry), as well as more original options like salted caramel brownie batter and lemon blueberry cheesecake. I tried the banana pudding Oreo, which was tasty and heavy on the Oreos.

Cajou Creamery

Cajou Creamery founders Nicole Foster and Dwight Campbell started out making vegan ice cream for their children, who are lactose intolerant. The business blossomed, expanding to a wholesale operation and a brick-and-mortar storefront that opened on Howard Street in 2021.

The vegan ice cream store is part of “Healthy Howard Row,” a collection of Black-owned, health-focused businesses that also includes Cuples Tea House and Vegan Juiceology. Inside, the scoop shop has a soothing vibe, with plants, Buddhist sculptures and colorful paper flags.

Foster and Campbell make their ice cream using cashew milk, resulting in a treat that’s smooth rather than icy like some sorbets. Staple flavors include horchata, blueberry cheesecake and sweet potato pie; on my visit, I opted for a scoop of baklava. The ice cream was delicate and not too sweet, with notes of cinnamon and chopped pistachios blended in.

For some added luxury, order your ice cream on top of a colorful cone in one of three flavors: matcha green tea, black cocoa or red velvet.

Moo Moo Cows

Moo Moo Cows owners Will Runnebaum and Bill Mangham make it a point to greet customers looking to grab a cone or a cup.

Friendliness is the cherry on top at this Federal Hill scoop shop, which is located in something of a dessert mecca: Bmore Licks is across the street, and Afters Cafe and Buns & Roses Chimney Cakes are just a short walk away.

Runnebaum and Mangham are also the partners behind the Marcus-Boyd Realty office in the same Light Street building, but decided to add ice cream to the mix as more of their real estate business was driven online.

They source their ice cream from a Mid-Atlantic dairy farm — the exact location is a trade secret — and serve a rotating array of two dozen seasonal flavors as well as staples. I tried the crunchy, coffee-flavored cappuccino chip and will be returning for a scoop of the butter brickle, an old-fashioned combination of sweet cream and toffee that’s not so easy to find these days.

926 Light St., Baltimore.

Prigel Family Creamery

Prigel Family Creamery has a stall inside the Belvedere Square Market. (Amanda Yeager/staff)

The origins of the milk used to make ice cream served at this Belvedere Square Market stall are no secret.

Since 1895, the Prigel family has maintained a dairy farm in Glen Arm, where they churn out cheese and milk as well as ice cream. Though it’s not officially certified organic, the Prigels’ farm adheres to organic farming standards, according to their website. They allow their herd of 150 cows to graze “day and night” and abstain from antibiotics and synthetic hormones.

The quality shows in the resulting ice cream: “You can tell these are happy cows,” a friend remarked as he dug into a scoop of vanilla on a recent visit. I decided to try the lemon ice cream, which was light and refreshing — a perfect summer treat.

If you’re bored of cups and cones, ask for an ice cream sandwich. The vanilla is even more indulgent between two chocolate chip cookies.

Sydney’s Ice Creams

Sydney's Ice Creams recently opened a storefront at 3432 Belair Rd. (Amanda Yeager/staff)

Sydney Newton’s pandemic-era passion project is now a full-fledged ice cream business serving some of the best scoops in the city.

Laid off in COVID-19’s early days, Newton and her children started making batches of ice cream and dropping pints off to family members. Eventually, she made the ice cream available to the broader public, selling it online and at festivals.

At her Belair-Edison brick-and-mortar, Newton serves a curated selection of ice creams, with some recurring favorites like banana pudding and some seasonal options, like a recent s’mores-and-banana mashup called campfire banana boat and a tangerine sorbet. I picked another summery option, the peaches and biscuits, which blends the taste of sweet fruit with a buttery biscuit crumble.

If you can’t make it to the shop, look for Sydney’s Ice Creams at markets around the city: Newton is a fixture at the Baltimore Farmers’ Market on Sundays and the Lauraville Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays.
