What Is a Trimaran?

sailing kayaks trimarans

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams.

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s.

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. These sailboats draw their versatility from their lightweight design, making them faster and easier to handle at sea when compared to single-hulled boats (monohulls). Additionally, the three hulls also contribute to better stability, making it very hard to capsize (although more likely than a cat according to this study)

Trimarans come in various sizes, and some can be as small as 19 feet (5.8 meters) in length, while others go up to 60 feet (18meters). They’re also used for different purposes. Most trimarans are used for racing and recreational purposes, although some units are still used as ferries.

As with all things, to find out which is the best we need to understand what it will be used for. There is a big difference in requirements between a boat used for day sailing compared to offshore around the world sailing.

The list below highlights the best trimarans for different purposes.

Best Trimarans For Cruising, Liveaboard and Sailing Around The World

The Neel 43 is a French trimaran best suited for cruising. Its key features include:

  • Easy maneuverability on the open sea by only a small number of crew members

The carbon hulls minimize weight, this makes for a lightweight ocean exploration sailboat with blistering speeds. The 17.4-foot (5.3-meter) WindRider 17 is one of the more versatile trimarans in the market. It packs high performance for a low cost. This trimaran has a light rotating mast to boost performance, and a full-battened mainsail optimizes visibility.

This sailboat is made from rotomolded polyethylene, which is more durable than fiberglass and demands less maintenance.

16. Challenger Class Trimaran

The Challenger Trimaran 15 is the best choice for persons with disabilities. It’s designed to provide disabled sailors an opportunity to explore their passion for sailing without worrying about aspects like safety or operation.

A man named Geoff Hold circumnavigated the British Isles in 2007, becoming the first disabled person to achieve this feat. He had quadriplegia.

Living up to its name, the Challenger can withstand harsh weather conditions while blending performance with speed.

Hobie Adventure Island 2021

The Adventure Island is a one person Trimaran kayak that is designed for sailing but can equally be pedalled or even paddled!

Unfurl the 6.04 m² / 65 ft² surface area sail from the 5.03 m / 16' 6" tall carbon composite mast and ride the wind with ease! The Adventure Island features fold-out AMAs for lateral stability and a drop-down daggerboard to prevent lateral slipping, making the "AI" a very capable sailing craft that is easy to use! You can pick up some serious speed and have some great fun with this kayak. Turning the AI is made easy via the stern rudder, which is controlled by a handle positioned adjacent to the seating position. The main sail can also be controlled, unfurled and reefed all from the seat too. The AI makes a great sailing craft for coastal waters and large inland waters. For enhanced performance 'Off-the-Wind', add a Adventure Island Spinnaker and the AI will come alive!

When the wind drops the fun can still continue. Simply reef in the sail and use the Mirage Drive to pedal the craft, so that you can continue your adventure or head back to shore! If you fancy a day paddling then leave the AMAs at home and take the main hull out on the water - at 16ft 7in length it paddles quite well!

Comfort is ensured for long days on the water by the fully adjutsable Vantage CT seat, which features Boa Lumbar Support. The AI features the Mirage Drive 180 full power pedal drive in forwards... and reverse! Switching between forwards and reverse is as simple and easy as pulling a toggle on the drive system. The drive system features 'Glide Technology' with roller bearings found on the major pivoting components of the drive, for a smoother and easier pedalling experience. The Mirage Drive 180 comes equipped with the new ST Turbo Kick Up Fins. Kick Up fins offer worry-free pedalling - should you strike an object with the fins they simply kick up out of harms way to help reduce the risk of damage.

The Adventure Island is a very capable kayak for fishing in both inshore and offshore waters, and comes with two moulded-in rod holders and the Lowrance-Ready system. The Lowrance ready system makes fish finder installation easy using a large transducer scupper under the kayak and a system of deck seals for waterproof cable routing.

Storage space is plentiful and loading up for a multi-day expedition, weekend camp or days fishing is no problem. The large bow hatch will swallow plenty of gear for storage in-hull. Two 8 inch Twist-Lock hatches feature at the stern and just forwards of the seat allowing for easy access to the hull for storage. A generous rear tankwell will also take plenty of gear or a storage crate for when you need to load up with gear. Mesh-pockets feature in the cockpit to store the small items you want to keep within easy reach. For loads of extra deck space, add the Adventure Island Trampoline Kit across the AKAs!

When it comes to docking or storing your AI, the AMAs fold in against the hull at the push of a button. An AI can be transported on a strong and quality roof rack, but custom built trailers are also available to make life easier.

If you want a versitile craft for sailing, pedalling and maybe a bit of paddling, that is easy to use and will provide endless fun, then the Adventure Island from Hobie will fit the bill!

CLC Kayak/Canoe SailRig

CLC Kayak/Canoe SailRig

Available Options

  Model: Length:  Hull Weight:  Beam:
CLC Kayak/Canoe SailRig 10' 0"
3.04 m
13.6 kg 3.05 m

Please note, the Base Kit does not include a sail.

The SailRig is adaptable to almost every kayak and canoe in our catalogue, and most any production kayak or low-side canoe as well. Mounted on a single kayak, the acceleration is neck-snapping, with good handling upwind and down and 9-knot potential. Ten-foot beam gives you monolithic stability (and thus sail carrying power with no hiking out), but the whole rig can be dismantled for cartopping in a half-hour. The SailRig components weigh only about 30lbs total.

While the CLC SailRig-equipped kayak is a proper sailboat by any measure, the beauty of the design is that you get your kayak back when you're done sailing. With the SailRig removed, all that's left are four eyebolts and an easily hidden mast step: no bulky reinforcements or heavy gear. No worries if the wind dies, because the aka (crossbeam) spacing permits a paddling stroke with the SailRig in place.

Fast sailing kayak-trimarans open up all sorts of adventure possibilities. The compact kayak and rig can be cartopped to some far-flung archipelago, assembled on the beach, loaded with gear, and sailed 40+ miles in eight hours. If the wind dies, you paddle. In good weather, long crossings can be contemplated, and a theoretical voyage might carry you 250 miles or more in six days.

The CLC SailRig is available with three different sails, to suit different boats, conditions, and skill levels:

  • SailRig 40:   A 40sq.ft sail is more than enough for fast sailing in solo kayaks and canoes.
  • SailRig 55:   The 55sq.ft sail is a good fit for most double kayaks, or for pushing single kayaks a little harder.
  • SailRig 70:   Unlike the 40 and 55, the 70sq.ft. sail requires strategic reinforcement of the host kayak to handle the loads, and a specially equipped mast (including sailtrack).  This option should be reserved for sailors with some skill, and for kayaks with enough bow volume to handle the speeds without "submarining"

"The CLC rig will convert kit or commercial kayaks to sail and will reward home builders with a project that is both eye-catching and fun to sail."  read entire review  -  Sea Kayaker, April 2005 "The amas are perfect. Pretty, fast, no bad habits at all. 25 kts of wind and beam reaching, they never dove even for a second, and if I sailed into a wave they popped up easily." - Kevin O’Neill, WaterTribe Cruising Challenge.

Best small cruising trimaran revealed

A trimaran is a boat categorized as a multihull. What it means is that this particular vessel is composed of three hulls that aid the boat during sailing but also provide interior spaces for the crew and guests to enjoy.

Trimarans are very popular in the sailboat market. They are mainly appreciated for their speed but also for their cruising character that can address families’ interests as well. Trimarans allow for leveled sailing, ample deck space, stability, comfort, shallow draft, and most importantly the good old family fun time.

A small cruising trimaran is probably one of the most popular boats nowadays as it provides an affordable but also an interesting way how to spend your free time and enjoy what nature has to offer. Let’s get to the gist of it then. Which is the best small trimaran nowadays?

Most popular small cruising trimaran

The best small cruising trimaran so far remains the F22 . The F22 Trimaran is designed by Ian Farrier and built by Farrier Marine company. It features a swan design and can be purchased in two versions, racing or cruiser form. This is a small trimaran that includes many interesting features within a compact space. It has a slightly offset centerboard trunk that allows for an ample interior.

In addition, it has an ama folding system. This is an advantageous feature as it allows the ama beam strength to remain to a maximum while the interior is free from any structural support structure for the beam. Fly spray is also reduced due to the folding struts being carried higher than before in case of deployment. This feature allows the F22 trimaran to have a greater performance under sail.

This small cruising trimaran comes in two versions, either with a carbon mast or an aluminum one. In addition, it is equipped with a boomless mainsail furling rig which makes sail handling easier. Most importantly, sailing efficiency is not sacrificed in any case.

What makes this boat the best small cruising trimaran is the fact that it can be used as a cruiser due to its interior. The galley has a two-burner Origo stove, a small sink, and a stow for sailing. In addition, the companionway has a pop-top that increases the headroom. Moreover, the F22 is equipped with a small chemical toilet that is quite private due to a roll-up screen and bulkhead that can be folded. All in all, the F22 contains 4 berths and can be used by families as well.

Compare the best small trimaran with other multihulls

You can learn more about the F22 trimaran on TheBoatDB . TheBoatDB provides an organized platform that anyone can use for free with a no time limitation account or what we like to call a “Forever free account”.

You can compare the F22 to other trimarans or even catamarans and single-hull boats and see for yourself whether this boat is up to the challenge for you. In addition, you can shortlist this trimaran or select a few different boats for future references. All in all, you will get your boating life on one platform as we like to say!
