Around 85 migrants rescued from boats in the Channel

It is understood that about 85 migrants were rescued after UK Border Force vessels and RNLI lifeboats were sent out at around 4am.

Around 85 migrants are understood to have been rescued from small boats in the English Channel during the early hours of Tuesday.

It is understood that the migrants were rescued after UK Border Force vessels and RNLI lifeboats were sent out at about 4am.

The latest Home Office figures show that 184 migrants crossed the Channel in small boats in the seven days up to Monday.

More than 125,000 migrants have arrived in the UK after crossing the Channel in the last six-and-a-half years as the recent crisis unfolded.

Since the Government struck the deal to send migrants to Rwanda more than two years ago – which has since stalled amid legal challenges – more than 80,000 people have made the journey.

The tally of crossings since Rishi Sunak, who pledged to “stop the boats”, became Prime Minister is edging closer to 50,000.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We continue to work closely with our French partners to prevent crossings and save lives.”

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “HM Coastguard has been coordinating the response to small boats crossing the Channel this morning, 18 June.

“RNLI lifeboats and UK Border Force vessels were sent.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during a interview at the G7 leaders’ summit at the Borgo Egnazia resort, in Puglia, Apulia, Italy

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: “On Tuesday 18 June, Dover and Dungeness all-weather lifeboats launched to assist with incidents in the Channel.”

Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak told broadcasters on Tuesday that the fact young children were crossing the Channel was “desperately sad” and demonstrated why his Rwanda policy needed to be implemented.

He said: “It’s desperately sad to see young children being put in these very dangerous situations, making these crossings, which illustrates why we have to stop the boats, something I’m determined to do and have a clear plan to do so.

“If re-elected as Prime Minister, the flights will go to Rwanda, we will build that deterrent, removing the incentive for people to come here in the first place.

“That’s the only way to solve this problem and in contrast Keir Starmer would release everyone that we have detained, illegal migrants would be on our streets, they wouldn’t be on the planes, which would be cancelled. There would be no deterrent.”

More than 40,000 migrants have crossed the Channel since Sunak promised to stop the boats

More than 40,000 migrants have crossed the Channel since Rishi Sunak pledged to stop the boats .

As many as 750 migrants including children are estimated to have reached the UK in small boats on Tuesday pushing the numbers of migrants this year past 12,000.

If confirmed, the 750 would surpass this year’s current daily record of 711, set on May 1.

It means that 2024 is on course to be a record year , up 19 per cent on the same period in 2023 and three per cent above 2022’s total at the same point.

It takes the total that have crossed since Mr Sunak pledged to stop the boats in January last year to around 41,500.

Labour said the figures blew apart the Prime Minister’s claims that small boat arrivals were coming down, although the Tories maintained the figures for crossings over the past 12 months were still down on the previous 12 months.

Last year saw a 36 per cent fall in the number of crossings after Mr Sunak said on Jan 4 that stopping the boats would be one of five key pledges of his Government. However, they have increased this year, partly fuelled by a surge in Vietnamese migrants.

On Tuesday, Border Force catamarans Hurricane and Defender and lifeboats from Dover, Dungeness and Ramsgate were deployed to rescue migrants. People smugglers were reported to have crammed up to 80 people into each of the flimsy dinghies to cross the Channel.

‘Desperately sad’

Mr Sunak said the fact young children were crossing the Channel was “desperately sad” and demonstrated why his Rwanda policy needed to be implemented.

He told broadcasters: “It’s desperately sad to see young children being put in these very dangerous situations, making these crossings, which illustrates why we have to stop the boats, something I’m determined to do and have a clear plan to do so.

However, Stephen Kinnock, the shadow immigration minister, said: “Rishi Sunak has spent more time desperately lying his way through the election campaign instead of getting a grip on the crisis created on his watch.

“The Conservatives have failed to stop the boats. They’ve broken the asylum system and voters are being stung for £8 million every day in asylum hotel bills. This can’t go on.

“Labour will turn the page on 14 years of Tory chaos. Our border security command will smash the criminal gangs running this vile trade, and our beefed up returns unit will remove those with no right to be in the UK.”

Two boats involved in horror crash as sailor thrown overboard

Rough seas contributed to the awful incident (Picture: BNPS)

Two boats were involved in a devastating crash and a sailor was thrown overboard during a yacht race.

A man was flung from a boat as competitors battled rough seas during the Round the Island Race in the Isle of Wight today.

He then desperately clung onto his life jacket before being rescued.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) rushed to his aid to pull him from the water despite the extreme conditions.

His condition is not yet known.

It’s thought that at least one of the boats involved capsized.

Wind speeds soared to 64mph before the shocking incident happened off Yarmouth.

The event, which sees boaters sail 50 miles around the Isle of Wight, normally attracts one of the largest fleets of any yacht race.

But the severe weather had a major impact this morning with 418 yachts retiring and just 153 finishing the race.

Elsewhere today, a British couple were thrown from a boat and seriously injured after it exploded in Majorca .

Migration tends to be discussed as a monolithic issue. But it is a complex suite of processes, including the movements of highly skilled workers such as doctors, scientists, and Premier League footballers, as well as lower-paid workers like carers and seasonal fruit pickers.

It involves international students whose fees contribute to the country’s higher education system, spouses of British citizens and residents, and people looking for humanitarian protection.

Government policies can affect how many people arrive, what rights and protections they have in the UK, and what happens to those who arrive without permission or lack a legal right to remain in the country. It is a key election topic for voters and candidates alike, with all main parties’ manifestos laying out their plans to lower legal immigration and crack down on irregular arrivals.

The five charts below – compiled with Migration Observatory researchers Ben Brindle , Mihnea Cuibus and Peter Walsh – provide a whistle-stop tour of the data behind the UK’s key debates about migration. These only scratch the surface of some very complex issues but should help you unpick what is and has been going on.

Who comes to the UK and why

The composition of net migration – the number of people arriving to live permanently minus the number leaving – has changed drastically since the Brexit referendum. Shortly before the 2016 referendum, EU citizens made up a majority of all net migration to the UK. From then, however, it began to fall, even though the UK remained part of the EU and policy towards EU citizens didn’t actually change until the start of 2020.

Estimates of net migration of EU and non-EU citizens in the UK:

Line graph showing that non-EU immigration has greatly exceeded EU immigration since Brexit

This change accelerated after the pandemic. In 2021, EU net migration fell into negative territory: that is, there were more EU citizens leaving the UK than arriving. By contrast, non-EU net migration rose sharply, reaching 892,000 in 2022.

Part of the shift in the profile of migrants owes to the post-Brexit immigration system, introduced in 2021. Compared to its predecessor, the new system was considerably more restrictive towards EU citizens and more liberal towards non-EU citizens.

Non-EU citizens now face a lower skill and salary threshold to acquire a work visa than they did before Brexit. But for EU citizens, who previously enjoyed free movement, the new system of visas and employment and salary requirements is a tightening of the rules.

But this is not the whole story. The largest groups explaining the 611,000 increase in non-EU immigration in 2023 compared to 2019 are migrant workers (53% of the increase) and international students (38%). This is not simply a result of the change in immigration rules. In the chart below, work is represented by a purple line, and study is blue.

Non-EU immigration to the UK, by reason:

Line graph showing that work and study have been the key drivers of non-EU immigration in recent years

Health and care was the main industry driving the growth in work migration, including care workers who received access to the immigration system in February 2022. There has also been higher demand for some workers who were already eligible for visas under the old system, such as doctors and nurses.

Read more: How visas for social care workers may be exacerbating exploitation in the sector

The rise in international student numbers owes in part to the reintroduction of a post-study work visa, known as the graduate visa. But it is also due to the UK’s explicit strategy to increase and diversify student recruitment.

Early data from recent months suggests that net migration could be substantially lower in 2024, although we will not have a clear picture of the changes until much later in the year.

Asylum: boats and the backlog

Small boat arrivals have come to dominate the UK’s migration debate, although they make up a tiny fraction of all immigration. Such arrivals have increased sharply since 2018. After around 250 people arrived at the end of that year, the home secretary declared Channel crossings a “major incident”.

Small boat arrivals from 2018 to 2023:

Bar chart showing that small boat arrivals peaked in 2022, largely due to Albanian arrivals

Small boat arrivals peaked at around 46,000 in 2022. Almost three-quarters of the increase compared with 2021 was due to arrivals from Albania during the summer. It remains unclear why Albanian arrivals spiked in 2022, or why they declined so rapidly in October and November of that year. While the government credits this decline to a new returns agreement with Albania, this was only announced in December.

Read more: The Home Office is now publishing stats on irregular migration - here's what they do (and don't) tell us

The future of small boat arrivals remains extremely uncertain. Crossings have persisted despite numerous government policies over the past three years to prevent or deter departures, including the plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, which has not yet taken effect. Rishi Sunak has said that flights to Rwanda will take off if the Conservatives win the election, while Labour leader Keir Starmer has vowed to scrap the policy.

The UK’s backlog of unprocessed asylum applications has been another focus of debate, and statistical dispute.

In December 2022, Sunak said that the asylum backlog was half the size that it was when Labour was in office. A week later, the immigration minister, Robert Jenrick, said that the Conservative government inherited a backlog of 450,000 unresolved cases from the last Labour government.

In fact, the government’s official statistics show that the asylum backlog stood at around 6,000 at the end of 2010, not 450,000. The backlog increased consistently until the end of 2022 when it reached a peak of 132,000 applications – 22 times higher than at the end of 2010.

The UK’s asylum backlog increased 22-fold from 2010 to 2022 – but is now falling:

Bar chart showing that the asylum backlog increased to a peak in 2022, and has since started to come down

In response to this debate, the UK’s official statistics watchdog criticised the government’s use of asylum backlog data.

In December 2022 , Sunak pledged to clear the asylum backlog by the end of the following year. This was later clarified to refer not to the entire backlog but just the “legacy” backlog – roughly 92,000 applications lodged before the Nationality and Borders Act, a new immigration law, came into effect in June 2022.

At the beginning of 2024, the government announced that the commitment to clear the backlog had been delivered. However, official statistics showed there were around 3,900 unresolved cases left in the “legacy” backlog. Again, the watchdog intervened to say the government’s claims were misleading .

Enforced removals and voluntary departures from 2004 to 2023:

Line graph showing that enforced removals and voluntary departures have reached pre-pandemic levels and are at a historic low

Despite implementing a “hostile environment” policy toward people with no right to be in the UK, the government has struggled to make them leave the country, either voluntarily or forcibly. Significantly fewer people were returned to other countries in the last decade compared to when Labour were last in power.

Read more: Hostile environment, Brexit and missed targets: 14 years of Tory immigration policy

Between 2010 and 2020, the overall number of returns collapsed by 82% – a trend accelerated by the pandemic but long predating it. While numbers have somewhat recovered since, they remain well below those seen in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Enforced removals were particularly affected by the decline – in 2023, they remained at less than half the level recorded in 2010.

The reasons for the decline are not fully understood, and do not necessarily result exclusively from policy or the resources available for enforcement. Other factors, such as changes in the composition of the irregular migrant population and the ease with which they can be removed, may have played a role.

Harrison Butler Bogle

St. david’s light, valiant 450 rib with suzuki 60hp engine, hardy 25 ‘albonita’.

‘Albonita’ is a Hardy 25, built by Hardy Marine in Norfolk in 1984 (yard no 1222). In excellent condition, she was bought by the current owner in 2021, but since then has been stored in a barn whilst the owner has been carrying out a programme of checking and improving the boat. Sadly, he has decided that he is too old now to complete the few jobs that remain, and so has decided to put her up for sale.

The blue hull and white deck and cabin topsides are in good condition, with the gel coat being recently cleaned and polished. The deck has a non-slip finish. The underwater hull bottom has been epoxied and CopperCoated, ready to go afloat.

The cockpit and cabin have standing headroom. The cabin is in its original layout, providing sleeping for three adults (2 in the Vee-berth up forward). The galley has a 2-burner gas hob with stainless sink and draining-board, with shelving and storage for kitchen equipment and provisions. Hot water is provided by a gas water heater. Please note that neither the hob nor the water heater have been tested. The cabin has been fitted with new carpet.

The Jabsco heads unit has been stripped, cleaned and re-assembled, and has a pull-out basin and shower.

The cockpit has two swivel chairs, plus comfortable seating at the back, which has new cushions.

Underneath the cockpit Is a large storage locker containing shore-power cable, two boat hooks, lifebuoy, warps, fenders, spare anchor with chain and rope, mud weight etc., with room for more. The cockpit has 2 cockpit pram hoods, plus external wheelhouse canvas window covers. There are two boarding ladders which need to be fitted.

Bilges are kept dry by a new Johnson 12v bilge pump, float switch and strum box, located in the deepest part of the bilge.

All navigation and cabin lighting have been checked to be working, and there is a new mast and steaming light. The 5kg anchor and chain is controlled via an electric winch.

Propulsion and power are provided by the original diesel Yanmar 3GM30F diesel engine. This was run briefly at the time of purchase and deemed to be sound. Since then it has been turned over by hand every month. It is fresh water cooled, and the Jabsco seawater pump has been cleaned and a new impeller fitted. The Venus seawater filter has been cleaned. Two new diesel filters have been fitted, one with a water-trap. There are two 12v 85-amp batteries, currently off the boat and kept charged at the owner’s home. On board there is a Sterling 240v battery charger for use when connected to shore power.

The Sonic outboard leg has had its oil changed, three new anodes fitted, new rubber gaiters and stainless-steel clips fitted, and the leg locking mechanism cleaned, overhauled and fitted with a new release spring. The three-bladed prop is in good condition.

The few jobs that remain to be completed include:

  • The instrument panel has two gauges that need either to be replaced or have new glass fitted;
  • The starboard wooden rubbing strake (supplied) needs to be re-fitted;
  • The traditional rope rubbing strake needs to be procured and fitted (stainless steel clips are fitted);
  • The Jabsco seawater pump has not been refitted to the engine;
  • Gas hob, water heater and associated pipes need to be tested;
  • Two wooden grab-handles (provided) need to be fitted.

The boat is currently sitting on a twin-axle, braked yard trailer in good condition, and this is included in the sale.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a rugged and seaworthy boat that is easy to handle in most conditions, with just a few jobs to be completed. It is ideal for river and coastal trips with family and friends, as well as sea fishing trips (holders fitted).

The boat is currently stored on her trailer in an open-sided barn. The trailer is a galvanised, braked, 4-wheel trailer in good condition.

'Hangover' was extensively rebuilt in the 1990s, and there is a lot of documentation from this and previous history. In recent times, she has been looked after by the Aldeburgh Boatyard since 2012.

This boat has been sailed across to Holland and back several times.

Loch Long One Design no 39, 'Gean'

'Gean' is a Loch Long One Design keelboat, built in 1957 by Nunns of Waldringfield. Approximately 12 years ago she was fitted with a new coachroof, which although different in design to the original, has been accepted by the class. Since then the boat has been laid up, and is now in need of some TLC to bring her back to pristine condition. 'Gean' can be raced with the Loch Long One Design fleets on the Alde in Suffolk as well as the Clyde in Scotland. Alternatively she will make a very rewarding day-sailer for friends and family.

'Laju' a classic wooden International Dragon

Designed in 1927 for the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club by Johan Anker, the Dragon class soon established itself as an international class, with fleets across Europe and Scandinavia. The initial concept was for a Bermudan-rigged keelboat that provided rudimentary accommodation, and in this way could be used to sail and sleep on, from one regatta to another, as well as cruising for pleasure. After WWII, in 1948, the class was selected for the Olympics, and from that point onwards Dragons were built solely for racing. However, 'Laju' was built in 1933 in Sweden and has retained the features of a pre-Olympic Dragon. In so doing she provides a very attractive cruiser to be sailed in classic yacht regattas, or simply for cruising in a boat that is a delight to sail. She is in excellent condition, having been fully restored in Devon by John McShea. You can read a bit about Laju's restoration at his website https://devoncraftsman.com/2016/11/25/just-a-little-background/ 'Laju' is currently in the Aldeburgh Boatyard having her topsides and brightwork refreshed, and will be ready to sail as soon as the new season comes around! She has her own 4-wheel, braked trailer, which has been regularly serviced with new tyres fitted, as well as her own rowing tender. There is an extensive inventory. This is a rare opportunity to own a classic, wooden yacht that sails magnificently, as all Dragons do!

'Jill' Tumlare no. 26

Here is a rare opportunity to buy a very exciting boat! She has had all the main structural work to her hull and deck completed to a very high standard, and now needs finishing off to be an exciting and beautiful classic yacht!

'Jill' is Tumlare no. 26, and is one of the batch of six Tumlaren that were the first of their class to come the UK, arriving at the Aldeburgh Yacht Club in 1935.

In Uffa Fox's Second Book, written in 1935, he described the Tumlare as 'a very advanced type of cruiser, in fact I should think she is the most advanced in the world ...'

'Jill' was built in Sweden to a high standard in Hjalmar Johannsen's yard in Gothenburg in 1935 using only very fine materials, and to illustrate this, to date none of her mahogany planking has needed to be replaced.

The current owner has had much structural work carried out, including replacing the galvanised steel floors with stainless steel replacements, and replacing the decking. In the process of renewing the deck the mast has been modified to be deck-stepped, making for more room in the cabin.

If you would like to find out more about this boat, then please contact us at Demon Yachts to have a chat.

"Ganymede", an 8mR

"Ganymede" (GBR1) is an 8mR racing yacht, designed by Juliane Hempel, currently one of Germany's most successful yacht designers, for yard owner Peter Wilson. Peter built the boat at the Aldeburgh Boatyard in 2007, and the hull is cold-moulded using spruce strip planking with has been sheathed. The deck is laid Douglas fir on composite plywood. Spars are from Z-Spars, and the rigging is stainless steel rod-rigging. Since she was built she has been campaigned successfully on the 8mR circuit, and is now back at the Aldeburgh Boatyard where she can be viewed.
