Boat test: Tricat 30: Trailerable cruising trimaran from France

"Naviguez autrement" - this is the slogan of the Chantier Naval Tricat near the picturesque Gulf of Morbihan: "Sail differently!" This means switching from a monohull to a tri. But it could also be interpreted differently: instead of the far more established multihull competitors Corsair and Dragonfly, consider the comparatively young brand from Plescop.

Far from the mainstream, it has developed quite valiantly since it was founded 20 years ago. And the boat we are talking about here clearly demonstrates its rise. The Tricat 30 is the top model from the shipyard, which started out with trailerable trimarans.

The big one is indeed impressive: at 9.20 metres in length, it measures a full seven metres in width when unfolded. If the floats are swivelled to the central hull, which works in a similar way to the Dragonfly, there is still a clearance width of 3.80 metres - making transport over land with a trailer and car impossible. The Tricat 30 is more of a seagoing vessel and therefore has a lot of righting moment across its width and, thanks to the very voluminous floats, plenty of buoyancy even in wind and waves.

Equally surprising is how much space it offers below deck. Thanks to its large windows and impressive headroom, it appears less compact than its direct competitors. All in all, it certainly has what it takes to compete with the established players on the market. However, the YACHT test revealed a few points that do not quite match the price tag. The price tag reads 200,000 euros for a ready-to-sail boat - a premium surcharge that is hefty. For less money, there is also a Pogo 30 with a canting keel and carbon rig, which also offers significantly more space.

So is the Tricat 30 worth considering? This and more in YACHT 8/2018, available in the DK shop, or you can download the test directly via the link below.

Already built in 10 units, the Tricat 30 comes with a Performance version. A regatta version which also remains very suitable for cruising.

The idea, like all good ideas, came from a meeting between Marc, an experienced sports multihull racer, and the TRICAT Shipyard .

" We had already thought about optimising the TRICAT 30 PERFORMANCE with a new rigging and asymmetrical daggerboards, combined with a functional, modern interior with a sleek design combining comfort and lightness. Marc challenged us to make sure his TRICAT 30 PERFORMANCE would be fast in all conditions and all points of sail and capable of competing with the best trimarans in the category. He also helped us by allowing us to exchange ideas with his friend Martin Fisher, a world specialist in flying multihulls and designer for the Italian America's Cup challenge. From these exchanges was born a "Custom" version using Decision 35 daggerboards adapted to the TRICAT 30 and inclined, served by a set of North sails worthy of the best racing trimarans in order to provide maximum power. It's a real partnership in the on-water development of the boat that we have had with Marc, whom we thank warmly. "

tricat trimarans

In spite of the sanitary situation, TRICAT managed to get this superb boat out before the summer with a reasonable delay, thus allowing to validate these spectacular performance improvements while keeping a great ease of use. This TRICAT 30 PERFORMANCE has not gone unnoticed and will be on the starting line in several regattas next season.

tricat trimarans

All the new TRICAT 30 PERFORMANCE boats now benefit from the new lighter interior and asymmetrical daggerboards, but the "inclined daggerboards" version remains a customisation.

The equipment is always "à la carte", thus remaining true to the spirit of the TRICAT 30: customizable. But enough about performance! The TRICAT 30 is above all a category B trimaran , designed for semi-offshore cruising. Due to its design and construction, the TRICAT 30 offers great stability and high cruising speeds at sea.

tricat trimarans

When cruising, the trimaran allows you to enjoy a very large leisure area at anchor (about 60 m²), but also thanks to its shallow draft to sail as close as possible to the coast and to offer you the possibility to run aground without constraints.

tricat trimarans

The interior of the TRICAT 30 will seduce you with its living space identical to that of a 30-foot monohull and its numerous stowage spaces that provide you with all the necessary comfort during your cruises.

Another strong point of the boat: her raised saloon and her very high luminosity, which is rare for a trimaran . The TRICAT 30 can be folded afloat, allowing you to take up the space of an 11-metre monohull!

tricat trimarans

The tenth TRICAT 30 is currently being built and will sail in Saint-Malo . There is still time to book yours for the summer of 2021!

Tricat 6.90 - 1

PRESS RELEASE - December 2020 Tricat has launched its new model: the Tricat 6.90. With this new boat, the boatyard that specialises in folding trimarans has asserted its motivation to popularise multihull sailing with all seagoers, offering a model that can be used by all. 3 versions are designed to adapt to 3 different programmes: A low ready-to-sail price The standard version enables access to an affordable trimaran . On this version designed for day sailing, enjoy sensations close to dinghy sailing, and thrilling long reaches on 3 hulls! For this infusion-built minimalist version, the builders focused their design efforts on practical use: a 1 minute horizontal folding system, quick and safe mast removal, even easier than on a sport catamaran, no mainsheet track to increase space in the cockpit, etc... Family sailing The Tricat 6.90 is designed for family use. The Family version has four berths to enjoy both sailing sensations and coastal cruising. When sailing flat on a trimaran, the boat does not heel when the wind increases and there is no spray, thanks to the high freeboard, which is great for kids, who will feel safe at sea! Thanks to its large living space and easy steps down, access is easy and it is pleasant to be in when sailing and on anchor, ideal as a shelter from the rain or sun. The foredeck is wide and free of obstacles, and the trampolines offer a pleasant area to relax. Low draught enables easy access to the beach, even for kids! To be able to manage young sailors onboard, the boat is designed so all ropes can be managed by the helm: sheets to winches, integrated and protected autopilot (optional), etc... With the small galley and removable electric kit, everything is designed to be able to cast off for a disconnected family adventure.

Tricat 6.90 - 2

PRESS RELEASE - December 2020 Premium version Tricat has also designed a cruising version of this model, for those who wish to enjoy trimaran sailing without compromising on comfort. Equipment to enjoy longer cruising include thicker mattresses and additional berth space to create a very wide adult sleeping area, pivoting table that can be used outside and inside, large wooden storage lockers that are easy to access and ideal to keep personal belongings, nets at the bow for safe access to the foredeck, comprehensive electrical system for several days of autonomy on anchor as well as a...

Tricat: A new owner and a smooth transition for the trimaran specialist

tricat trimarans

The Tricat shipyard, which has been building trimarans in France since 2003, is changing ownership. Its new owner, François-Xavier Tillier, explains the gradual handover and his ambitions for the multihull specialist.

Briag Merlet

Transmission of the Tricat shipyard

Founded in 2003, Tricat builds folding trimarans in Brittany and has built up a solid reputation in the field. After more than 20 years at the helm, founder Antoine Houdet has decided to hand over the reins of the company, which employs 12 people and generates sales of ?1.5 million. François-Xavier Tillier, familiar with the sector and the company, explains the background: "I've known the shipyard for 6 years, as a supplier, and Antoine and I have become friends. With my company Deptron, based in Crouesty, we equip trimarans with electronics. Knowing that I'd already taken over companies, Antoine jokingly told me a few years ago that I could take over the yard, and it finally became serious a year ago. I used to work in industry, and I wanted to return to a company that was more industrial than my electronics company, with industrialization and slightly longer production cycles. The Tricats are boats that appeal to me."

Tricat 30

a 2-year mentoring period is planned to ensure a smooth handover of the shipyard . François-Xavier Tillier, supported by workshop manager Julien Maillet, will give Antoine Houdet the opportunity to continue working on boat design and business development before he leaves.

Creating a sound industrial base

While ambitions to develop production and sales are clearly on the agenda, François-Xavier Tillier identifies the organization of manufacturing as a priority task: "There's of course the idea of developing the brand in France, then abroad, and industrializing more on our scale, producing larger units in greater numbers in the future, but the first step is to improve the production tool. My first focus is to ensure that we have the right boat-building foundations, tried-and-tested processes and more industrial steering tools. We have the room to move forward with the space to double or even triple production at Plescop in the future."

A new trimaran model is expected by 2025, to be announced in April 2024.
