Funky Or Freaky? What’s Up With This ‘Guilty’ Superyacht?
If you happen to cruise past this yacht, you can’t not see it. The Guilty superyacht is a fun and quirky build with many interesting features. In this article, we’ll show you around the interior and exterior, and give you a little information behind its eye-catching design…
About Guilty: Inspiration & Owner
Guilty is a collaboration between superstar American artist Jeff Koons and Italian yacht designer Ivana Porfiri and was launched in 2008. Her owner is art collector Dakis Joannou.
You might be wondering about the vibrant exterior design… The bold geometric designs – alternating yellow rhombuses, pink triangles and blue polygons – were inspired by British naval camouflage ‘Razzle Dazzle’ from World War I with the goal in mind of not to hide but to confuse.
With exterior and interior design by Porfiristudio, Guilty sure is a one-of-a-kind yacht!
On the sides of the ship, the artist played with the idea of a mirage, an oasis, and pyramids.
Koons once delved into his reasoning:
“If the sea was calm, then you would get a reflection, and the model would have a doubling effect that makes it even more abstract.”
An open-air museum, Guilty is home to some pretty exciting artwork.
Her name is even inspired by one of the works displayed on the yacht – artist Sarah Morris’ Guilty on canvas is on display in one of the cabins. The walls and ceilings are also a crisp white, and there are big windows to let in lots of natural light.

Artwork or Super Yacht? The Guilty Yacht signed by Jeff Koons for contemporary art collector Dakis Joannou
A true floating work of art with a length of 35 meters and a value of $40 million.
This Yacht was commissioned by entrepreneur and contemporary art collector Dakis Joannou from artist Jeff Koons , and studied in detail by Italian designer Ivana Porfiri .
The vessel features a trimmed bow and three decks; size was the only constraint dictated by the owner’s berth.
Guest cabins are located on the lower deck while the yacht’s salon is on the main deck along with a service area and wheelhouse. On the upper deck, however, is the amateur cabin, which occupies almost all the space and enjoys a 180-degree view of the outside.
The geometric designs (yellow-colored rhombuses, pink triangles, and blue polygons) are inspired by Razzle Dazzle , the British naval camouflage during World War I.
Razzle Dazzle is in fact the technique used during the war to conceal a vessel or military instrument: instead of camouflaging the object, it was preferred to confuse the viewer. Jeff Koons hand-painted the yacht to create this alienating effect. On the sides of the ship, the artist played with the idea of pyramids, an oasis and a mirage: “If the sea was calm,” the artist explains, “then you would get a reflection, and the model would have a doubling effect that makes it even more abstract.
In contrast to the exterior part, the yacht’s interior takes on a minimalist aesthetic with walls and ceilings all whitewashed. Huge windows maximize natural light inside. Understated and elegant furnishings, such as Patricia Urquiola ‘s Fat Sofa, are contrasted with pop and iconic artworks found throughout the yacht’s rooms such as Anish Kapoor ‘s Hex Mirror. The perception inside is that of being in a floating artwork where a central staircase transforms from rosy purple to blue to warm yellow.
Gulity is an open- air museum and a work within a work of art because the yacht is home to some of the most interesting artistic evidence of our century. The boat’s name is inspired precisely by one of the works displayed on the yacht. It is Guilty by Sarah Moris painted on canvas in one of the boat’s cabins.

Guilty Yacht by Jeff Koons
There have always been charges of excess in the art world, as after all, fun succeeds in excess.
The Guilty Yacht, exclusively designed by American artist Jeff Koons and Italian yacht designer Ivana Pofiri for Greek industrialist Dakis Joannou, is quintessential of such lavish exuberance and eccentricity of design.
Consolidating the super-yacht as an exemplary piece of floating art.
Measuring a colossal 115 feet long, the Guilty Yacht ranks as Koons’ largest project to date, and arguably his best.
Inspired by a contemporary take on the traditional camouflage used across all British naval ships in World War 1, the yacht’s vast exterior is adorned in bold geometric designs that tone down the harsh severity of wartime aesthetics with dashes of yellow, pink and blue.
The imposing, bespoke aesthetic of the yacht was quite easily achieved courtesy of the brief provided by Joannou, one of the world’s most important art collectors, who wanted to ensure, above all else, that Guilty provokes reaction.
“We did what we wanted; style was irrelevant,” Dakis Joannou explains.
"We designed a boat a boat in an antistyle method. We have no rules, no programs, no plans.”
Elements of functionality are also efficient amongst Koon’s kaleidoscope design; as the sweeping large windows across the yacht frame the seascape as well as acting as a large funnel of natural light in to the vessel.
Internally, the design remains loyal to its show stopping brief. Highlighting the space, a central staircase transforms the interior through changing its appearance from a subtle pink, to a sea-inspired blue and finally a warm yellow.
Elsewhere, the main cabin encompasses the entirety of the top deck, with 180-degree views of the surroundings, while more comedic touches are found in the bedroom with a neon light sign sitting above the bed- reading the word ‘Feelings’.
The rest of the four guest cabins feature radical Italian design, typifying the luxurious, opulent aura of the entire yacht.
Above all, the super-yacht, is a calculated act of irreverence that expresses the patron’s evolution as a renowned art collector, sailing ahead as one of Joannou’s most proud pieces.
