The founders are the Balducci family who came up with the Mangusta name in 1985. The name comes from mongoose, which is ”the only animal that can tackle and defeat cobras. At that time the best company for fast vessels used to be the Cobra by Tecnomarine.

So the Mangusta was a new challenge, to beat the existing company in the best Italian sailing yachts brands. Giuseppe Balducci’s history also begins in Viareggio when he was working in a historic shipyard. The innovations that came after these years are truly amazing and it’s still a well-respected company.

You’ll find three types of yachts, Mangusta Oceano, Gransport, and Maxiopen. I found the Maxi Open the most interesting. It is a luxury sports yacht, it’s designed to be spacious while still offering enough speed. The smallest model can still hold up to 14 people on board in total. While the 132E has 5 cabins for guests and the owner, plus another 3 for the crew. So in total, it can fit up to 17 people. You can bring a lot of your friends to this yacht.

Using Riva’s own words about its yachts ”Devil is in the details” and I couldn’t agree more. Out of the 10 Italian luxury yacht brands Riva is probably the most luxurious looking with so much detail. It was founded in 1842 by Pietro Riva. Today it is part of the Ferretti Group.

You’ll find three different yachts at Riva, the Sportfly, Open, and Flybridge. Sportyfly’s largest yacht is the 88’ Folgore. It’s an ”irresistible thunderbolt”, it’s fast, beautiful and the design is just magnificent. It has 4 cabins and two standard crew cabins. The interior has everything you ever need for your vacation on the Italian coast.

From the Flybridge collection, I like the 110’ Dolcevita the most. It’s their new fiberglass flagship. And it is also a collaboration between Officina Italiana Design and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. The yacht itself is stunning, and aesthetically pleasing with the highest technology. It has 5 cabins and 3 standard crew cabins, so it’s quite spacious. Let’s see the last of the Italian yacht brands.

5. Sanlorenzo

The last on our list of Italian sailing yachts brands is Sanlorenzo. They have over 60 years of experience in this field, founded by Gianfranco Cecchi and Giuliano Pecchia in 1958. They have been building high-quality motor yachts that can be ordered on request. And their motto is ’made to measure’, meaning you can request them to be made in many ways.

There are 4 collections to note at Sanlorenzo. SL, SD, SX and SP Range. The SL yacht for example is elegant and well-balanced, available in 6 different models. All of them can be personalized based on the owner’s taste and passions. Let’s take the SL106 Asymmetric as an example. It is 32,38 meters long and can fit a total of 15 people on board.

The SP range is quite new, designed with sustainability and comfort in mind. There’s only one model available, which is the SP110. It ”offers the best performances at the lowest fuel consumption”. Have you seen solar panels on a yacht? Yes, the SP110 has solar panels that supply the power to run the hotel load. It fits about 12-13 people and has a length of 33,04 meters. Continuing our list of Italian luxury yacht brands, next up is Baglietto. The brand was founded over 160 years ago, in 1854 with just the dream of having small fishing boats. Its founder is Pietro Baglietto whose vision was so clear that even today Baglietto is a well-respected yachts brand. He created racing boats, cruising yachts, and standard boats. Over the year the family business has been passed down to generations.

Today they stand proud as a 160 years old business that creates the most amazing yachts in Italy. There are 4 distinctive ranges to look at. The Dom Line, Tline, Fast Line, and Superfast Line. But besides these 4 ranges, Baglietto also offers the possibility to custom make your own yacht.

In the Fast Line, there are 3 different models designed by Francesco Paszkowski. The Fast43 is a 43.65 meters long yacht that can hold up to 17 people, out of which 7 are crew members. Another designer for Baglietto is Stefano Vafiadis, whose range is the Dom Line. The Dom 133 – Hybrid, has an overall length of 40.60 meters and can hold up to 18 people. 7. Ferretti

The Ferretti Group was founded by the Ferretti brothers in 1968. They were previously marketing motor boats for an American Firm but then decided to build their own ones. The first one was built in 1971 and was called a ‘motor sailer’. After this, a series of other motor yachts were built by the Ferretti brothers, and soon they expanded into a bigger company.

The Ferretti Group also owns Riva, Custom Line, and CRN. So what type of “boats” can you buy from one of the best Italian yachts brands like Ferretti? According to the company, “the Ferretti Yachts fleet is a rich mix of comfort”. Let’s take the FERRETTI YACHTS 1000, which is a new concept of yachts. It looks and feels luxurious from the inside out.

The amount of time spent on designing and prototyping these yachts is over 15,000 hours. And to this day, it is their largest yacht built. The exterior looks premium with all of the details thought out carefully. The interiors look like the inside of an apartment. With sofas, tables, and chairs that make up a lounge and allow 20 people to be on board. The bedrooms and bathrooms are stunning too!

8. Rossinavi

The brand Rossivani is fairly new compared to the other Italian sailing yachts brands. Rossivani was founded in 2007 by Cantiere Fratelli Rossi. So many brands in Italy have been created by families and passed down to generations, working with the same passion. They create stylish yet simple designs which are made to last for years to come.

On their website, you can check out the fleets as they were made in each year, all the way back to 2000. The “South” was the first-ever made yacht by the Rossivani company and it’s 54 meters. The average speed is 15 knots with a maximum of 17, meanwhile smaller yachts go between 6-8. These yachts can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Looking at the newest model which is the “Piacere” one, was built for anyone in all types of sea conditions. It’s made in a way that both the internal and external spaces are optimized. The overall length is almost 50 meters. Although it doesn’t say how many people can fit into this yacht, however, you can choose to have a large garage on the bow. Simply said, it’s a pretty big yacht!

The story of CRN began in 1963 in Ancona which is in the Marche region of Italy. If you’re familiar with this region, then you know the Le Marche beaches as beautiful, so it’s only right that you need a yacht to discover all of them. CRN comes from “Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali” which translates to “Shipbuilding and Ship Repairs”. Ancona has been a “strategic maritime hub” for 2400 years.

CRN is passionate about steel and aluminum, to bring their ideas to life and listen to your visions of how you imagine the yacht to be. They say “if you can dream it, we can make it”. To the cycling enthusiast the maglia rosa, Campagnolo and Colnago – with its “ace of clubs” logo – are icons one and all. The latest collection comprises impeccable tailoring with bold, quintessentially Italian stylistic touches – from ornate embroidery to eye-catching patterns. No scent is more robustly and classically Italian than the original Acqua di Parma Colonia fragrance. This light, fresh cologne of Sicilian citrus fruit, lavender, bergamot and Bulgarian rose has remained unchanged since 1916 when it was created in a tiny artisan laboratory in Parma. If you’re looking for the unique, alluring and utterly original then Giampiero Bodino is the jeweller to call. Giuseppe Zanotti Design

If you talk to Giuseppe Zanotti about decks, he won’t think first of boats but of DJing. The designer, who comes from San Mauro Pascoli, a small town near Rimini famous for shoe manufacturing, was a keen DJ in the 1980s.

But a passion for art, design and fashion, combined with the craft history of his native town, led him into a career as a women’s shoe designer. Zanotti worked first for small artisanal shoemakers by day, while still spinning records at night, before graduating to the likes of Thierry Mugler, Missoni, Fendi, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino. He has amassed many fans in the world of entertainment. Today that means men, too. Any onboard journey will surely be enhanced by Zanotti’s Kriss high-top trainers for him. As horological success stories go, Panerai’s is more remarkable than most. Originally a maker of military optical equipment, the Florentine company was commissioned to create a series of watches for the Italian navy during the 1930s and went on to develop several unique models designed for diving, with highly luminous dials, waterproof cases and patented crown-sealing levers.

By 1970, however, Panerai’s watch operation had become dormant. It resumed small-scale production in 1993 with a civilian range that (so the story goes) attracted the attention of actor Sylvester Stallone. His influence helped revive interest in the brand, which was bought by luxury goods giant Richemont in 1997 and the company is now helmed by CEO Angelo Bonati . Panerai has since developed a cult following with a series of watches that have, largely, remained true to the design ethos of the originals.

The Luminor Submersible 1950 Flyback, pictured here, features a case, dial design and crown-locking mechanism that can be traced back to the 1950s, although the standard of quality, fit and finish is much better today than it was 60 years ago. The watch uses Panerai’s P.9100 movement and is available with a 47mm case in steel or titanium. There is also a special Regatta version, which has an additional pre-race start timing function. When it comes to having the best new supercar to complement your yacht, tradition dictates that they should come from Italy. Ice 60 review: The chic Italian yacht that offers more than just style

Styles come and go. To stand the test of time you need something else, something more than aesthetics, something that stays with you after that initial heady rush begins to wane.

The Italians have always owned style and there has been something of a revolution in Italian-designed and/or -built boats in recent years. A number of new brands have joined what was an already crowded performance cruiser market – sexy-looking machines that excel in light-wind, warm weather sailing conditions.

These offer the latest in desirable lines with unblemished decks, shallow cockpits and plenty of sunbathing space, tender garages, etc. Grand Soleil and Solaris are the best established in production yard terms, but have been joined by companies such as Italia Yachts, Mylius, and Eleva.

Ice Yachts, with its ravishing new 60-footer, is another fine example, but are we talking style-only or does it have that special something?

Ice 60 features a long waterline and powerful hull shape: a soft chine gives extra beam with minimal drag

Ice is a relatively new brand, but one that uses a tried and tested designer and shipyard. Its boats are drawn by Umberto Felci and built at the former CN Yacht 2000, a 30-year-old yard near Milan, responsible for more than 80 large custom or semi-custom yachts.

Ice Yachts was born out of one sailor’s search for a Felci 61 cruiser-racer, eight of which were built by this yard. Marco Malgara fell in love with the outlook of the boatbuilders and the history of the yard, and ended up buying it six years ago and creating Ice Yachts.

The first project was the Ice 62, which used the lines of the original Felci 61 but with slightly more beam and freeboard. The Ice 44, Ice 33 and Ice 52 followed. The latter I have trialled for European Yacht of the Year , enough of a taster to pique my interest in this new Ice 60 when it hit the water earlier this year.

I was intrigued to find out why Malgara, an accomplished racing driver who has worked in advertising, marketing and the police force and who remains a successful real estate businessman, would want to buy a shipyard and start a new yacht brand.

“I bought it because I couldn’t find a yard with the quality I wanted,” Malgara explained during two days spent together testing the Ice 60 and visiting his two shipyards near Milan. “I tried to improve what the good workers already knew very well, adding my knowledge of sailing and building racing cars.”

“The difference between something nice and something well done is important,” said Malgara, who competed six times in the notorious endurance motorsport event the Paris-Dakar Rally. “When you are in the desert and something goes wrong, you’re in the shit… the same applies with boats.”

Malgara, a workaholic who lives and drives in the fast lane, “wanted to create a product that was not available. A yacht to be proud of.”

The wide, flat cockpit suits Med-style cruising

The Joy of sailing the Ice 60

In La Spezia I found Joy , 60ft of Ferrari California light blue hull with a lofty carbon rig, blunt stem and bowsprit. The Ice 60’s beamy aft sections have a soft, appealing chine/turn to the hull shape and its lines look powerful and, well, Italian.

And I soon discovered that this is a very easily driven yacht. When we started sailing in zephyrs, I was down below, talking to designer Umberto Felci about the secrets to Italian design. The only way I could tell we were silently moving along once sails were hoisted was by detecting a slight heel and seeing the water moving past the hull porthole as we ghosted along at 3 knots.

Weight is a big priority at Ice Yachts; its yachts are built using a resin-infused mix of glass and carbon fibre as standard. The sailing weight of the Ice 60 is just 18.7 tonnes, including anchor and 75m of chain, and it boasts a substantial 220m 2 of upwind sail area. It’s also a structurally stiff boat, with the capacity to take over 1,000lt of water in tanks that are built into the hull and form part of the structure.

Toby sailed the Ice 60 off La Spezia in 3–12 knots

At the wheel, I was instantly impressed by how the boat could harness the light conditions. We soon found some puffs of breeze and were clocking over 7 knots upwind in 7-8 knots apparent. Looking at the very high sail area:displacement ratio of 28.9, slippery performance should indeed be expected. With another knot of wind we could squeeze up to 28° to the apparent wind, or make 8 knots in 10 by sacrificing a few degrees.

Unfortunately, the conditions were tricky and unpredictable all day, the breeze shifting all over the place, which made it tough to get a feel for the boat and accumulate accurate figures. We didn’t enjoy five minutes of consistent wind all day – at one point I watched the Windex spin round and round as we sailed along under kite.

The upside is that it certainly helped to be aboard a lightweight performance cruiser that could make the most of such fickle conditions, which I’m told are typical for that area.

The stern garage is large enough to fit a fully inflated 3.2m tender. A garage is a key feature of Med-based boats, but does eat into accommodation space

Joy ’s carbon rig is one of the last Southern Spars masts to come out of its South African yard, while Diamond Sails near Livorno built the black Dyneema sails.

I’m not sure the colour of the sails nor their stark vertical logo is in keeping with the slick Italian looks, but they serve a marketing purpose.

A fine red gennaker helped us to make the most of the wind and generate some of our own. It was really rewarding to feel that extra bit of power, even if I nearly sailed a full circle on one gybe, trying to match the wind as it boxed the compass.

Boat speed rose to 9 knots, and we were generally making similar figures to the single-digit wind speeds. It felt very light on the wheels, which use direct Jefa steering connection, but the conditions still made it a challenge on the helm and I needed to monitor the numbers rather than rely on feel.

Felci explained that the Ice 60 has a narrow waterline when stationary and that the soft chine gives the benefit of extra beam, but without the drag resistance of a hard chine.

“It’s a fight between how much resistance I have and how much power I add,” said Felci, a racing sailor who competed for 20 years in 470s. “The ratio of stability to power is like the relationship of horsepower to wheel width on cars.”

As we chatted, we made our way to the west of Portovenere and its stunning clifftop monastery guarding the shallow entrance, catching the last of the afternoon breeze, which allowed us to sail at 6 knots in 6 knots.

It was as pleasant as it sounds, but the changeable conditions meant performance was hard to gauge. It was like trying to test a premium hybrid bike on a road full of potholes and stop signs.

The quiet 5-cylinder Volvo Penta and Flexofold prop proved a smooth, efficient combination for our return journey, propelling us at 8 knots at 1,900rpm and 10.5 knots maximum.

Designer deck details

I liked the neat design of the twin pedestals, which seem to grow out of the side decks – they are both relatively discreet, yet create enough space for a large plotter and a panel of pushbuttons.

The test boat had the latest Raymarine Axiom 12 pro plotters, which looked very much in keeping with the sharp design of the boat. These use Android operating systems, which proved easy and fast to use and customise displays.

There’s a nice gap between the pedestal and the cockpit bench for the mainsail trimmer to work the two-speed winch and traveller. The traveller uses an Antal electric line driver, while the backstay and vang are hydraulically powered.

It’s all in the detail: design of the Ice 60 is beautifully executed

However, the same crewmember cannot reach the primary winch. Using reversible primary winches with remote controls at the pedestals could be a better solution for those wanting to sail short-handed.

There is no provision for the stowing of sheet tails for the main and genoa, but there is a generous locker by the companionway for the running rigging tail ends. The genoa sheets are led neatly aft underdeck from near the shroud bases.

A surprise for a yacht with such a clean deck and look is that the sheets are then led athwartships to the winches, presenting a trip hazard to those on the side deck. Re-routeing of the sheets alongside the coachroof-to-deck join might present a neater alternative.

A typical Med cockpit provides short benches with low coamings, showing a predilection for looks over comfort. The low backrests mean good cushions will be a must, but the benches are at least wide and the large fixed table is a practical feature.

Simplicity of style

The Ice 60 has a minimalist modern design – think open loft style with lots of natural light, white and beige furnishings and materials – the antithesis of a traditional-style yacht interior. The simplicity of Felci’s design grew on me, especially as it is practical for purpose and the finish quality is very good.

The sloon is the epitome of clean Italian style

“Most owners of this type and size of yacht will have a skipper,” says Malgara, pointing out the compact single cabin opposite the galley. “It’s already an expensive boat and owners don’t have much time,” he argues.

It’s unusual to have a crew cabin in the heart of the boat so close to the owner’s cabin (forward), but it’s a better solution to help retain the services of a long-term skipper than the typical shoebox-style forepeak solutions found on many yachts this size (a forepeak berth is offered on the Ice 60 as standard).

A forward galley, a layout Felci uses with Dufour too, is sociable – the Ice 60 has plenty of worksurface to prepare food while facing the saloon.

The built-in Siemens oven and induction hobs, as well as a domestic-style fridge-freezer on Joy are reflective of how some of today’s owners use this sort of yacht and how they cook and overnight in marinas/port rather than at sea. Stowage space is reasonably good and includes plenty of refrigerated and bin space.

The cabins all have generous stowage, natural light, ventilation and headroom. The navstation shares the after end of a comfortable sofa bench. This daybed is another typical feature on an Italian/Med boat and one that works well on the Ice 60. The 19cm memory foam mattress provides comfortable lounging or a useful passage berth in the centre of the boat where there is least motion.

The companionway has four deep, but flat and slippery steps. There are two sturdy leather-clad handrails each side and two more grab handles further forward, which are very much needed as there is a wide, open space between the saloon table and the navstation.

All heads have good stowage, including wet stowage in the port heads shower area – the addition of shower doors would stop them becoming wetrooms. There is good access from the starboard cabin to the engine/machinery room and 8kW genset, with room enough to climb in or directly access the filters. Latches, lights, switches and general details all look very smart.

The light, airy theme continues in the owner’s cabin

The light, open layout helps the owner’s cabin feel very roomy. Again it’s simple, but practical and well finished. The low island berth, with a large Seasmart hatch above, lifts easily on struts to reveal more stowage space and robust stringers below and there is a generous ensuite heads.

The two aft cabins are similar in style and layout. The double to port boasts a large enough berth to sleep lengthways or athwartships and has its own access to the day heads/shower.

We visited both the former CN Yacht 2000 facility on the outskirts of Milan and a second yard nearby into which Ice has moved its catamaran production. Ice launches its boats onto the River Po and floats them down to Ravenna.

Ice in build

The catamaran yard was working flat out on its second model, a 67-footer, reportedly the largest cat yet produced in Italy. This uses a mould extension on the Ice Cat 61, which first launched earlier this year.

The original (CN Yacht 2000) yard is much tidier, if by no means a modern workplace. This typically old-school yard relies on everyone knowing where everything is and doing his or her job in a time-honoured fashion.

It may not be intuitive to witness, but it works and there is a family feel to the place, which is crucial when you need staff to put in the hard yards.

I saw some of the 16 infusions going into the next Ice 52 (number 11). Epoxy infusion is labour-intensive, with 7,200 hours needed for this boat.

Hulls and decks of Ice yachts are laminated sandwich infusion, using a glass-carbon fibre composite material, localised carbon reinforcement and a PVC foam core.

As well as the 52 a new raised saloon (RS) version of the Ice 60 is in build too.

Our verdict

I thought this yacht would all be about the look and the feel, the famed Italian design touch. But the Ice 60 proved it had something else, something that stayed with me.

Historic Italian Shipyards Making Waves in the World of Yachts

From the passion and ingenuity of their founders, Italian shipyards have come to represent an important sector for the market, experimenting with the most advanced technologies

Benetti Shipyard

Yachts — a family of boats measuring more than 24 meters in length, including the subset of superyachts (over 30 meters) and megayachts (over 60 meters) — represent a particularly important sector in the overall market. Flaunting continuous growth since 2010 (especially when it comes to motor boats), the market makes up 89% of all boat sales.

In addition to their role as a world leader in both yacht design and production , Italy also maintains some of the oldest and most renowned shipyards around the globe.

These are the stories of 10 Italian shipyards born from the ingenuity, passion, and courage of their founders, which today are busy experimenting with the latest technologies and producing the absolute best of Italian nautical design .

Benetti Shipyard

Benetti Shipyard

Benetti is among the oldest producers of luxury motor yachts , celebrating Italian excellence throughout the world. Founded in 1873 by Lorenzo Benetti, the shipyard was originally dedicated to constructing wood boats destined for local and international commercial use. Following the death of Lorenzo, the shipyard passed to his two children Gino and Emilio, who changed the name of the company to Fratelli Benetti . With the advent of the Second World War and the disappearance of commercial sailboats made in wood, the shipyard began production on recreational boats in steel. Later, in the 1960’s, the brand would start work on the first luxury yachts on a larger scale.

Since the 1980’s, the fleet consists of yachts ranging between 30-60 meters and beyond, arriving at the 86 meter long “Nabila”, made for Saudi billionaire Khashoggi, which also featured in the 1983 film Never Say Never Again . In 1985, the shipyard was purchased by Azimut Spa, becoming a modern and technologically advanced company now recognized internationally.

Since 1873, the brand has built more than 350 boats and the shipyard has become a symbol of Italian nautical culture, art, and tradition around the world. Last December, the new “FB277” 107 meter yacht was unveiled in Livorno as the largest to ever be produced in Italy by a private shipyard.

Sanlorenzo Shipyard

The Sanlorenzo shipyard (originally the San Lorenzo shipyard), was founded in Viareggio in 1958 by two pioneers, Gianfranco Cecchi and Giuliano Pecchia, producing boats from their headquarters in the shed of the former Canottieri Berchielli . In the late 1960’s, production picked up, and the shipyard began creating 35 to 60 foot wood boats with Caterpillar motors. However, it wasn’t until 1972, when Giovanni Jannetti took over, that the brand became known as a symbol of quality, elegance, strength, and reliability with beautiful interiors. Then, in September 1985, Sanlorenzo forayed into fiberglass with the SL 57. 1995 saw the evolution of the SL 100, an avant-garde boat both technologically advanced and elegant, which pushed the brand into superyacht territory. By 1999, the company moved to Amelia (La Spezia), and in 2005, Massimo Perotti purchased the shipyard, which became Sanlorenzo Spa. Despite changing hands, the company’s philosophy remains the same, favoring customization and quality. In 2007 Sanlorenzo revealed its first SD92 and the first superyacht made in 40 Alloy.

In 2012, Sanlorenzo is split in two divisions: the Naval Shipyard of Amelia, where its fiberglass motor yachts are produced with planing hulls from 62 to 108 feet, and the new Naval Shipyard of Viareggio, where composite boats are created with a semi-displacement hull (from 92 to 122 feet) along with superyachts in metal (steel and aluminum) from 38 to 50 meters.

The forward thinking Massimo Perotti and Sergio Buttiglieri (style director) bring two seemingly distant worlds together, weaving interior design with yacht design for an always surprising result. What’s more, collaborations with Dordoni Architetti, Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, Piero Lissoni, and Parisotto + Formenton have brought about yachts with a one-of-a-kind aesthetic. The synergy between diverse worlds comes into focus thanks to the company’s new art director Piero Lissoni, who also curates installations, fair stands, and buildings for the shipyard to maintain a coordinated and unique brand image.

CRN Shipyard

CRN Latona

Founded in Ancona back in 1963 by entrepreneur Sanzio Nicolini under the name Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali , the shipyard would later take to the acronym CRN , affirming itself as a world leader and icon of Italian style, elegance, and excellence.

Construction began with a few boats in steel and aluminum — a material not commonly used on a market with a predilection for wood. By the end of the 1960’s, CRN yachts had grown to reach 15 to 20 meters.

Marking the brand’s history is of course the collaboration between Sanzio Nicolini and Carlo Riva, which lasted from 1970 to 1978. During this time, CRN built eight boats for Riva — one of which became the personal yacht of Carlo Riva himself.

In 1978 CRN realized the first yacht stretching over 45 meters: the “Fath Al Khair” at 47.2 meters for the Emir of Qatar, Al-Thani. During the 80’s, most clients of the CRN could be traced back to Greece or the ruling families in the Middle East. In light of this, yachts grew bigger, reaching lengths of 32 to 61 meters.

1983 was an important year for the shipyard, when it sold the F100, an incredibly innovative yacht for an owner with particular tastes: lawyer Gianni Agnelli, head of Fiat.

In 1999, CRN became a part of the Gruppo Ferretti, which would lead to the “Magnifica” — a superyacht stretching over 43 meters designed by Nuvolari Lenard and launched in 2001.

Various recreational boats followed and the company created five new ships within the year, helping the CRN fleet grow rapidly and garner a name for itself on the international stage.

In 2013, the “Chopi Chopi” was launched, flagship of the fleet at 80 meters, which became the largest from the brand in over half a century of operation.

The latest to come from CRN, however, is the “Latona” superyacht, a 50 meter vessel with four bridges built to satisfy the personal requests of its owner, who was looking for an authentically unique boat (evident in the vessel’s bright turquoise color).

Azimut Yachts Shipyard

Azimut Shipyard

Azimut Yachts is the brand from Gruppo Azimut - Benetti specializing in yachts between 10 and 35 meters. The shipyard presents a wide gamut with five collections: Atlantis, Flybridge, S, Magellano, and Grande.

Dating back to 1969, Azimut Yachts was created when a young university student, Paolo Vitelli first founded Azimut Srl, giving life to a sailboat renting business. In 1970, a few prestigious brands entrusted the new company with their vessels across the Italian territory. Not long thereafter, Vitelli’s small company was no longer just in the business of distribution, but also designing new yachts. In a joint venture with Amerglass, the “AZ43 Bali” was born, a fiberglass boat produced in series that found near immediate success.

In 1985, Azimut acquired the historic Benetti shipyard, building its designs from scratch and defining the new stylistic and industrial standards that would revolutionize the nautical sector like large frameless windows and electric chairs.

Since the late 90’s, with the purchase of a new shipyard in Fano, restoration of the Benetti shipyard in Viareggio, and a new facility in Avigliana (TO), Azimut has confirmed itself as the undisputed leader in yacht and superyacht production. Today, the company has expanded even further, counting locations across the ocean in Brazil.

Perini Navi Shipyard

Perini 

Perini Navi is an Italian shipyard with its headquarters based in Viareggio, operating in the design and production of luxury sailing yachts .

The shipyard was founded in the early 1980’s by Lucca-based entrepreneur Fabio Perini, who entered the nautical world thanks to his inventive approach. Inspired by the machines wrapping paper, Perini invented a system of automatic winches, moved by electric motors that were also controlled electronically, allowing Perini Navi to be the first company to produce large vessels with reduced equipment.

The first boat launched in 1983, “Felicità”, was a 40 meter sailing yacht with Perini’s innovative system that could be manned by just one person.

In the early 90’s, Perini Navi took over at the Picchiotti shipyards (historic naval shipyards in Limite sull’Arno dating back to 1600).

In 2017, after a difficult period, 49.99% of the company was sold to Edoardo Tabacchi through Fenix srl with an investment of 20 million euros. In the summer of 2018, Tabacchi bought a further share of the business for 75% ownership, while Perini was left with 25% partial ownership through the Faber Group. Nominated president and general manager, Lamberto Tacoli is also president of Nautica Italiana.

From 1983 to today, Perini Navi has launched 61 superyachts with varying sizes between 40 to 80 meters. Their biggest yacht, released in 2006, is the “Maltese Falcon”: a ship with three masts stretching over 88 meters. Since 2004, the brand has also managed the Perini Navi Cup, a regata reserved for Perini boats.

Rossinavi Shipyard

Rossinavi Shipyard

Rossinavi was founded in Viareggio in 2007 as a natural evolution of the Fratelli Rossi shipyard, famous since the 1970’s for their unmatched skill in molding metal. Constructing some of the finest steel and light alloy yachts, the Rossinavi shipyard is the only family owned business creating superyachts in Italy.

Their business platform is focused not on quantity, but quality: all 17 yacht completed today have been one-off, personalized vessels, tailor-made for each client. In 2006, the shipyard was presented with a big opportunity in “South”, a superyacht measuring 54 meters designed to become a luxury charter. Realized in just 22 months and handed over in 2008, the final product blew expectations out of the water.

In 2011, the “Numptia” was launched, a megayacht stretching 70 meters as one of the most important vessels ever constructed in Viareggio.

Over the years, Rossinavi has collaborated with the likes of Achille Salvagni, Pininfarina, Carlo Colombo, Enrico Gobbi, Lazzarini Pickering Architetti, Fulvio De Simoni.

In 2018, the brand released the 63 meter long “Utopia IV” for a noted American buyer, reaching a maximum speed of 33 knots, and the 49 meter long “Flying Dagger” for a European owner, reaching 31 knots.

Custom Line Shipyard

Custom Line Shipyard

Custom Line was created in 1996 as an evolution to the flybridge fleet of Ferretti, which then included vessels measuring from 12 to 25 meters.

Thanks to their 30 years of experience, Ferretti focused on developing a new brand that could enter the market of fiberglass recreational boats. The company had two goals: to satisfy the needs of their loyal customers who wished to continue the nautical experience with the same brand, and to conquer new clients from international markets where they had recently put down roots.

Remaining close to the historic brand, the new logo came as a variant on the double F of Ferretti, combined with the words “Custom Line”. The gamut presents various models of different volumes and lengths and has also continued to offer more space, privacy, and personalization. The over 180 Custom Line boats produced in 21 years can be found sailing all around the world today.

Europe and the Mediterranean have long been the brand’s historic stomping grounds, although recently Ferretti has made moves to reach the Middle East, where its renowned comfort (both while driving and at rest) have been appreciated. Elsewhere, in America, the Custom Line has taken a good piece of the market, just like in the Far East — particularly in China and Hong Kong, where the Custom Line is among the leaders in the market.

Riva Shipyard

The historic shipyard of Riva motorboats is perhaps among the most famous of all nautical undertakings “Made in Italy”. Born from an entrepreneurial adventure, the brand’s roots go back to 1852 in Sarnico, on the shores of Lake Iseo, where Pietro Riva has since become a legend of the Italian nautical scene.

The shipyard originally dealt with the repairs and construction of working boats ( batel de pesca ) and recreational vessels ( canotto da passeggio ) that were typical to the area. Pietro’s son, Ernesto, however, understood that motors were the future, and so began creating increasingly larger boats. His first steamboat, which he tested on the lake, was known as Sarnico, in honor of its place of origin.

With the Great War at an end, it was Serafino Riva who oriented the shipyard towards the production of performance vessels in wood for motor boat competitions, which had only just begun. His boats would go on to win countless prestigious prizes, and in the 1940’s, Serafino is flanked by his young son Carlo. A future pioneer of recreational boating, Carlo takes a different path, diverging from his father’s design philosophy. Driven by a passion for boats and working in the shipyard, the young dreamer keeps his feet on the ground with clear ideas: only high-quality serial production could help him reach his goal of making Riva a synonym of luxury yachts. Inventing, renewing, and enlarging the older models, Carlo risked it all to create what would become the new standard for the family company.

In the 1950’s, Carlo Riva landed in the United States and signed off on the first importation of American motors, resolving the biggest problem for his vessels. From that moment, the elegant wood motor boats of Riva couldn’t be touched by their competitors, hailed as prized objects for royal families, film celebrities, champion athletes, business men, and the international jet-set.

In the midst of the Italian economic boom, engineer Carlo Riva gave life to a series of elegant and refined motor boats with an unmistakable style. Then, by September 1969, he decided to sell the shipyard to a man by the name of Whittaker, while still maintaining his role as president and general manager. Bought again by the English group Vickers, who also owned Rolls-Royce, the shipyard later entered under Gruppo Ferretti in 2000.

Since then, Riva has taken a fresh new start, thanks also to the talent of Bergamo’s Mauro Micheli, founder of Officina Italiana Design together with Sergio Beretta, who exclusively designs for the entire luxury brand.

In September 2014, during the Monaco Yacht Show, Riva announced a new, fully custom line known as the Superyachts Division: a new fleet including yachts in light alloy from 50 to 100 meters. Its latest, the Riva 110 “Dolcevita”, sits at 33 meters.

Baglietto Shipyard

In 1854, Pietro Baglietto began his business in Varazze constructing small skiffs. Within just a few years, the undertaking led to constructing recreational boats and, in 1888, he realized a vessel for Pope Leo XIII. In 1891, he released the famous “Miss Mary” yacht, which when modified by Baglietto , became the regata champion. In the early 20th century, he began creating the first motor boats — then known locally as canotti automobile . The shipyard was also behind one of the largest motor yachts of the time: the “Giuseppina” at 22.6 meters in 1906.

During the First World War, Baglietto put together the MAS (Motoscafo Armato Silurante), an assault vessel for the Italian Navy, which, in 1936, broke the previous record of 50 knots. In the 1940’s, the shipyard focused on military vessels, establishing the longest running collaboration with the Italian Navy and allowing Baglietto to develop the technological expertise that would come in handy after the war.

The shipyard’s technique took a great leap forward thanks to the advent of marine plywood in the 1960’s and the realization of skiffs in light aluminum alloy in 1975, which Baglietto would master. Over the years, the company has worked with major clients like Giacomo Puccini and Vittorio Emanuele III, industry giants like Gianni Agnelli and Angelo Rizzoli, and even stars like Mike Bongiorno and Virna Lisi.

After selling the company out of the family in the 80’s, the shipyard began producing superyachts with hydrojet propulsion. Today, under Gruppo Gavio, a multinational corporation run by a family of boat lovers, the brand is undergoing a sort of renaissance between its 35,000 square meter facility in La Spezia and its avant-garde models on the forefront of technology.

Tankoa Shipyard

Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. is an Italian shipyard for luxury megayachts in steel and aluminium ranging from 50 to 90 meters.

Founded in 2007 by a former management team of Baglietto Yachts, Tankoa has been producing vessels since 2008. The company began construction immediately on two yachts stretching over 65 meters after signing an agreement for the project with naval architect and professor Vincenzo Ruggiero and designer Francesco Paszkowski. Over the years, the shipyard has continued to produce bigger and better yachts.

Situated in Sestri Ponente (GE), Tankoa is in front of the new marina designed by Renzo Piano, including modern offices and two, 65-70 meter construction halls. Each operate according to elevated international standards and hold Lloyd’s Register and RINA classifcation. In 2018, the shipyard released “Solo”, a 72 meter long yacht.

Riva has always been at the top of the Richter Scale of cool. The wooden Italian speedboats ooze glamour and sophistication, especially when they were so famously owned and graced by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, Sophia Loren, and power duo Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor–the mid-century equivalent of Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Beyond the irresistible jet-set imagery of the Riviera of the 1950s and ‘60s, Riva boats still command smiles and drools today with their contemporary models. And that’s the brilliance of Carlo Riva. Carlo was the great-grandson of Pietro Riva who, 177 years ago, founded the namesake company on Lake Iseo in northern Italy. 

Similar to its larger and more famous brothers Lake Como and Lake Garda, the tip of Lake Iseo sits at the foot of the Alps and is surrounded on both sides by screensaver-worthy countryside, villages and vineyards. It’s a place that begs James Bond to chase villains or seduce women on something as appropriate as a shiny mahogany speedboat.

Here in the town of Sarnico, Carlo followed in the footsteps of his father who, after having apprenticed under the original paterfamilias, slowly transitioned Riva from a maker of transportation and passenger craft to pleasure and power craft.

When it was his turn to take the helm, however, Carlo broke with tradition and transformed the small family business of made-to-order powerboats into a global industrialized powerhouse. He did this by looking to the American company Chris-Craft, emulating its processes, but also taking it a step further.

At the time, Chris-Craft was the Cadillac of runabouts – they defined a product and a style. They were handsome, powerful, reliable, and attainable by the burgeoning upper middle class. If Chris-Craft was to Cadillac, it seemed, then Riva would be to Ferrari.

Carlo was very perceptive to the growing demands of a post-war Europe flush with prosperity, and excelled at capturing the collective zeitgeist. He knew there was a market for his vision and so with the boldness of a Caesar, he took a massive risk and built a new ultramodern (not to mention incredibly cool) boatyard on the lake shore – a working monument that still serves as the company’s headquarters today.

Although Carlo implemented a modern assembly-line approach to Riva boatbuilding – a process that changed the fortunes and the future of the company, he never sacrificed the family’s legendary attention to detail (such as aligning every screwhead horizontally, for example). 

Even more significant, Carlo became a leader in marine design and application, making his boats not just practical and beautiful but also innovative. This melding of state-of-the-art methods with old-world craftsmanship, combined with Carlo’s innate mastery of image building, propelled Riva to almost immediate international prestige.

As the Italians do so well, Carlo was able to imbue his brand with an intangible essence that evoked all that was desirable. A Riva wasn’t just a luxury boat, it was a lifestyle statement that represented the epitome of la dolce vita. To own a Riva was to live the good life.

In keeping with Carlo’s vision, Riva continues to embrace the latest in modern technology when it comes to building its boats today, with a model line that has grown to include personal speedboats as well as seaworthy yachts. Just as important, Riva also maintains its fastidious attention to detail and infuses each craft with a uniquely Italian spirit.

The signature visual features of a Riva boat and, by extension, the Riva brand are the strips of polished mahogany covering the bow and stern (still finished with 22 hand-applied coats of special glossy sealant) and the famous Riva turquoise blue upholstery. The mahogany details are still present in modern Rivas, although most now sport other upholstery colors than turquoise. Nevertheless, this proprietary shade of seafoam blue is as intertwined with the brand as rosso corsa is with Ferrari.

To visit the boatyard in Sarnico is a pilgrimage in the motoring world, especially for those obsessed with this iconic brand – like me. Treating my special invitation like a golden ticket, I arrived at this hallowed space floating on a cloud. Even more fortunate, it was a Sunday morning when the facility was closed and I was getting a personal tour from the company’s resident historian.

“Here is the first Aquarama,” he says, pointing to the most legendary of all Riva models. “This is Serafino Riva’s (Carlo’s dad) first racing boat, that’s the Aquariva by Marc Newson, and this is the boat done in collaboration with Ferrari.” 

As I’m led from room to room, the weight of history only increases and so does my appreciation. “This is where the carpenters carve the mahogany panels, this is where fiberglass components are made, over here in this engine bay are boats nearing completion…”

But the holy of holies was the personal office of Carlo Riva. Designed by him to resemble the bridge of a ship, the spacious room occupies the uppermost floor of the building and is accessed by spiral stairs of gleaming mahogany. Jutting out above the water, the room is lined with massive windows overlooking the lake – where Carlo could personally see every new boat leaving the factory – and the floor is made of heavily worn, polished wood rescued from an antique ship, complete with rust marks left by the old iron nails.

There’s an ancient ship’s wheel and a large brass engine telegraph (the instrument that has a lever pointing to “full, half, slow,” etc.). Not surprisingly, fabric pillows in the famous Riva blue color line a sofa, stacks of Riva books line the shelves, and the maestro’s long, wide desk sits in the corner surveying the room.

This handsome command post is supposedly just as he left it. And what’s impressive is that it casually effuses that intangible Riva style – retrospective but modern, high-design but warm, masculine but elegant, thematic but not kitsch. In a word, it’s perfectly balanced – like some form of Italian feng shui.

My private tour inevitably ended but my interest was only heightened. What’s that I hear? I’m welcome to return anytime to have a further look behind the scenes, and an Aquariva had been scheduled to take me an hour up the lake to lunch?

The rain that had been falling outside was starting to let up. As I left Sarnico I could’ve sworn that as I looked back I saw a rainbow in the sky and it fell on the Riva boatworks.

Luxury yacht manufacturers are spread all over Europe and all over the world. Most of motor yacht manufacturers are based in Europe. Leading super and mega yacht builders are from Northern Europe — Netherlands and Germany. Dutch shipyards specialized in sailing yachts are also the best. Italy has very strong yachtbuilding traditions as well, their yachts of various sizes are truly excellent vessels. Italian shipyards are one of the most successful, they build and sell very well. Great Britain is very good at building luxury motor yachts in GRP with sizes up to 40 m. France for now is less about building super yachts, but stunning sailing yachts and extremely performant multihulls are their success.

United States have numerous shipyards of their own. Each with great history and unique technologies. But european production is getting more and more popular among american clients. Benetti, Overmarine Group | Mangusta, Wider, Feadship, Luerssen — twice a year they all come to the american boat shows with their newest launches and the most successfull yachts.

Asian manufacturers have only recently entered the market. Although some strong production has been already organized in Taiwan.

Australia builds motor yachts rarely but builds very well. Their production is of true luxury. As for New Zealand, it's a unique country with very strong yacht building traditions. They are experts at sailing yachts, brilliant at building motor yachts.

Now that the Sanlorenzo Group of shipyards will be assuming total ownership of the Nautor Group over the next four years. And the Sanlorenzo Group’s Bluegame brand just delivered its first fully-foiling, all-hydrogen-powered chase boat to the New York Yacht Club American Magic America’s Cup team that’s competing for the right to challenge for the America’s Cup in Barcelona in the coming months. Saying Sanlorenzo Group President and CEO Massimo Perotti has been a “bit busy” might be a “bit of an understatement.”

But no matter how you describe it, Sanlorenzo’s acquisition of the iconic Nautor Swan sailing yacht brand (and the entire Nautor Group ) along with successfully launching a 100% emission-free powerboat that’s capable of speeds up to 50 knots and has a range of up to 180 miles, shows Perotti’s commitment to growth, innovation, and sustainability.

And as the yachting world continues to consolidate, Sanlorenzo’s acquisition of Nautor Swan makes a lot of sense.

Meanwhile, another Sanlorenzo brand, Bluegame made headlines recently by successfully launching their first Bluegame Hydrogen (BGH) zero-emission, hydrogen-powered chase boat they developed and built for the New York Yacht Club American Magic team to use in the 37th edition of the America's Cup that’s just getting underway in Barcelona this week.

It was designed following the strict requirements of the America's Cup Protocol to be able to fly on foils at 50 knots alongside American Magic's AC75 on the racecourse. And the use of hydrogen as the sole propulsion system marks an important milestone in sustainable technology for the entire recreational boating industry.

“From its origins, the history of Bluegame has been one of innovation and courage," Bluegame CEO Carla Demaria said at the launch. "The courage to push boundaries, to go beyond the conventional, and to challenge the impossible, as we did with the BGH. We are proud to participate in the America's Cup alongside the prestigious American Magic team, which has made history as the world's oldest active international sporting competition.”

“Choosing Bluegame for our hydrogen support boat was an easy decision for American Magic”, said American Magic President of Sailing Operations and Skipper Terry Hutchinson. “Bluegame’s cutting-edge marine technology and unwavering commitment to sustainability align perfectly with our values. Meanwhile Bluegame’s Head of Product Strategy Luca Santella just touched on how hard this project was. "The creation of the BGH involved a series of extremely complex challenges in terms of design, engineering, and materials research. For this reason, Bluegame assembled a team of exceptional competence, consisting of professionals with extensive experience in the world of the America's Cup. The efforts and significant investments in research and development to achieve the performance, speed, maneuverability, and reliability necessary to successfully support the American Magic team have been rewarded. The result is a vessel that marks a new, historic milestone in the application of cutting-edge technologies for more sustainable boating”.

In the coming weeks, Bluegame will also deliver a second BGH to the Orient Express Racing Team , America's Cup from France.

“Despite some positive indicators, the overall picture shows a market still adjusting to post-pandemic realities and changing economic conditions,” the report reads.

Boats Group 2024 Mid-Year Market Index

The 2024 Mid-Year Market Index includes a market analysis of boats sold by condition, length, style, and more. New boats outperformed used boats, with sales of the former up 5.3 percent and the latter down 12.4 percent. That is partially due to the fact that the average price of new models fell by 3.4 percent to $174,000 but the cost of pre-owned examples increased by 4.2 percent to $211,500. Lower sticker prices and better financing resulted in an uptick in the sale of new vessels.

Boats measuring less than 26 feet are the strongest performers, with 3,239 examples changing hands globally in the first half of the year. That is still a drop in sales compared to 2023, but the average vessel price for this segment did increase nearly 4 percent to $196,934 this year. At the opposite end of the spectrum, just 50 boats over 80 feet sold in the period. The average cost of cruisers in this segment dropped by nearly 15 percent to $3.38 million.

Interestingly, motor yachts are still more popular than their sailing counterparts. Some 3,092 powerboats sold for a collective $1.38 billion in 2024, whereas only 1,665 sailboats changed hands for a total of $368 million.

As for the rest of the year, inventory levels, pricing trends, and economic pressures will likely continue to impact buyer behavior and overall market performance. Let’s hope for some smoother sailing into 2025.

Mass at a casino, a bishop in a boat, and armies of Italian grandmothers: Meet Atlantic City Catholicism

I step off the boardwalk into the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and am immediately met by a sea of slot machines and blackjack tables. Everything from the lighting and the spinning reels of cherries, lemons and bars to the signage seems designed to make you feel overwhelmed, lost and ready to keep on gambling. I walk down a corridor of luxury brand purses, perfume and clothing stores meant to tempt the lucky few who come out ahead. When I round the corner I see three women religious descending the escalator in gray and black habits. I know I am in the right place.

“The Wedding of the Sea” is advertised on a large screen in the Hard Rock Etess Arena. In Las Vegas, people celebrate a wedding, or two, every night. Here in Atlantic City, the biggest wedding party happens once a year on the Feast of the Assumption.

The Etess Arena was originally a part of the Trump Taj Mahal, and the stage has featured everyone from Elton John and Bob Dylan to Beyonce and the Backstreet Boys. But on this warm morning of Aug. 15, over 2,000 Catholics gather in the arena for Mass, celebrated by Bishop Dennis Sullivan of Camden for Atlantic City’s 56th annual Wedding of the Sea. After Mass, the 79-year-old bishop will be rowed out into the Atlantic Ocean and throw a wreath of flowers into the water, memorializing the city’s “marriage” to the sea on which its economy and people depend.

The tradition was brought to this coastal city by Italian immigrants in the 1800s but dates back to 1000 A.D. in Venice. In that year, the doge of Venice memorialized his kingdom’s newly achieved maritime dominance by throwing a ring into the Adriatic Sea. In 1173, the ceremony was fixed on the Feast of the Ascension, and in 1177, Pope Alexander III gave the doge of the city a blessed ring for the ceremony in gratitude for a peace treaty that ended a long struggle between the Venetian empire and Rome and asked that the doge and his successors “marry” the sea again each year.

How the ceremony was moved from the Feast of the Ascension to the Feast of the Assumption when it crossed the Atlantic remains a bit murky, but legend has it that in the 15th century, a bishop was traveling from Venice and, when faced with choppy waters, threw his episcopal ring into the sea and the waters became calm.

This year is Bishop Sullivan’s last wedding ceremony before his retirement as the head of the Camden diocese. Before moving from his native New York, the Bronx-born bishop had never heard of the tradition. But he has always connected the Feast of the Assumption with the sea. Every year on Aug. 15, his Irish-born mother would take him and his three siblings to Orchard Beach in the Bronx. “I have a very vivid memory of one year: It was beastly hot, and my mother threw us all in the bathtub,” he told me shortly before Mass. “It was too hot to go to the beach. You had to be in the water.”

Today, he sees the value of the Italian tradition as an expression of what Pope Francis has described, and praised, as “popular religion.” “This connects [people] to God, it connects them to the church. It certainly connects them to Mary. There’s a great religious atmosphere around the whole thing.”

The day’s events are put on by St. Monica’s, a parish that includes the three Catholic churches in Atlantic City. Its pastor, the Rev. Kevin Mohan, serves as master of ceremonies. I asked if he ever heard people express concern about celebrating Mass in the middle of a casino. He has heard comments, but he said, “To me, I think it’s fitting. For one thing, the casinos and more broadly the hospitality industry are a very important part of life in the city here. So many of my parishioners work in many different capacities in the casinos and the hotels. So in that sense, it’s not something that we’re ashamed of.”

It’s only the second year that the Mass has been held in this location. For years it was held in the Atlantic City Convention Hall, and a smaller celebration took place in St. Michael’s, one of the parish churches, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Father Mohan even saw the Hard Rock Hotel in particular as a fitting venue:

How many longing cries have been belted out from that stage with or without realizing that God is the fulfillment of all desire? And here we are and God is feeding us with the bread from heaven, and it’s commemorating God drawing the Blessed Virgin Mary up to himself, which is the fullness of God’s generous response to the desires that he placed within us. So there’s something not only acceptable but very, very fitting.

The people streaming into the arena certainly are not bothered by the setting. To the left of the large stage is a statue of the Virgin Mary. Before Mass begins, Catholics stick dollar bills to her dress, another Italian tradition. But what started as an Italian celebration has changed with the population of Atlantic City. The opening procession features two young Latinos carrying a banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe, women in traditional Filipino dress and several Black men dressed in the regalia of the Knights of St. John.

In his homily, Bishop Sullivan reminds us that in the encyclical “Laudato Si’,” Pope Francis says that Mary is “the queen of all creation.” “So we ask her today to look on this ocean, God’s creation, so critical to this city, and on all who use it,” he said. “We ask her to look with maternal love and to help us do all we can to protect and preserve this magnificent gift of creation, the Atlantic Ocean.”

Though he didn’t say it, the bishop might also have asked Mary to keep that ocean calm today, because it would soon be time for him to get to the boat.

After Mass, we make our way back through the maze of slot machines and card tables to watch the statue of Mary process down the boardwalk. Presumably because of the sizable amount of cash stuck to her, she is escorted by several members of the Atlantic City Police Department in addition to nuns, priests, knights and dames. After she is placed next to a pathway to the beach fittingly called Virginia Ave, we head to the water for the main event.

To my surprise, the bishop is not in some motorized seafaring vessel, but in the small wooden lifeguard boat. Dressed in a white robe and carefully donning his violet zucchetto, Bishop Sullivan is rowed out against the incoming surf by two lifeguards. While I am told the bishop has never been knocked out of the boat, several people mention to me an iconic photo from a few years back when the boat appears to be perfectly vertical to the water.

Thankfully, the breakers aren’t too rough today, and when the bishop gets about 50 yards out, he throws the wreath of flowers and blesses the ocean. Immediately people start filling bottles with salty water to use as holy water should the need for it arise. I notice a college-age couple who are filling up multiple glass containers. Thomas has come from Haddon Township, 50 miles across the state. He is fourth-generation Italian and told me that his family comes every year, so he wanted to introduce his girlfriend, Jamie, to the tradition. He says the holy water he gets on the Feast of the Assumption is “the best there is,” and when I ask what he has used it for, he replies: “I just used it all around. Anything I need it for. That’s why I come with a big bottle.”

Jessica and her grandmother, Rita, have traveled to Atlantic City from outside of Philadelphia. Rita has made it to the shore for the Feast of the Assumption since she was a girl. Back then, she says, she didn’t know about Venice, the doge and the ring. “My mother just said, put your feet in the water and you’ll be healthy,” she tells me. When Jessica’s grandfather was alive, he would take her—and whoever else in the family he could grab—to the Wedding of the Sea, seeking to pass down tradition. After he passed away, Jessica promised her grandmother she would take her to the seaside wedding every year. “I think the funniest part is there’s people on the beach, and they have no idea that there’s going to be the attack of the little Italian ladies,” Rita said. “And we all rushed down there and they have no idea what’s going on.”

After filling up my own plastic bottle, I head up to the boardwalk where I chat with Sister Ann Kateri, one of the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal I saw descending the escalator before Mass. In addition to the feast day, Sister Ann is celebrating the eighth anniversary of the sisters’ arrival in Atlantic City at the invitation of Bishop Sullivan. (“The best thing I did in my 11 years,” the bishop told me.) The sisters came to work with the poor, of which there are many here. Stray far from the boardwalk and you will encounter a struggling city. Opioid use and prostitution are rampant, Sister Ann, whose community runs a drop-in center and homeless shelter, tells me.

I ask what this feast means for her and her ministry. “It really is a feast of hope that our Blessed Mother rose body and soul into heaven,” she said. “And she’s there. She precedes us. That’s what we’re aiming for. That’s what we’re hoping for.

“It’s a reminder, first, to me, of body and soul here in Atlantic City—where the body is just a vehicle of pleasure in so many ways. [It is a reminder] that it is integrated, that we are a body-soul union and of the importance of the dignity of our body. [And it is a reminder,] for me personally, to try to live that out in the way that we serve the people. But really [it’s a reminder] that Mary is our hope, that she is the answer to the complexities. I can’t solve the homelessness here. I can’t solve the poverty. But I turn to her. I entrust the people that I serve to her.”

In October 2022, an extraordinary event lit up the universe—one that was so intense it outshone anything humanity has ever witnessed. This wasn't just another astronomical occurrence; it was the "BOAT," the Brightest of All Time gamma-ray burst officially designated as GRB 221009A, a cosmic flash so powerful that it overwhelmed gamma-ray detectors across the globe. But what does this mean for us, and could such an event pose a threat to our planet?

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are some of the most energetic events in the universe. They're like cosmic fireworks but on an almost unimaginable scale. The BOAT burst, however, took things to a whole new level. Lasting a full 10 minutes—unprecedented for a GRB—and remaining detectable for 10 hours afterward, this event unleashed more energy in mere seconds than our sun will emit over its entire 9-billion-year lifespan. That’s right— billions of years of sunlight crammed into seconds.

What made this burst even more remarkable was its proximity. Located in the Sagitta constellation, it was just 2 billion light-years away—a stone’s throw in cosmic terms. To put this in perspective, a burst of this brightness so close to Earth is estimated to be a once-in-10,000-year event. The last time something like this occurred, humans were just learning how to farm.

The Mystery Behind the BOAT

So, what caused such a massive explosion? Gamma-ray bursts typically fall into two categories: short bursts from neutron star collisions and long bursts from massive star collapses. The BOAT, with its extended duration, clearly belonged to the latter. However, this event was 70 times more intense than any other gamma-ray burst on record. Initially, scientists speculated it must have come from the supernova of an unusually massive star. But here’s where things get puzzling—the supernova that followed the BOAT was shockingly ordinary.

The James Webb Space Telescope, the latest marvel in space observation, pointed its instruments at the BOAT and found that the supernova was just average . This contradiction—an average supernova paired with a record-breaking gamma-ray burst—left scientists scratching their heads.

One hypothesis is that the BOAT's extraordinary brightness was due to Earth's position relative to the jet of particles the burst emitted. Imagine a flashlight in the dark, its light spreading out and illuminating a path. Now, imagine that light concentrated into a laser beam—less spread out but much more intense. If Earth happened to be directly in the path of this "cosmic laser," it would register as far brighter than a burst aimed elsewhere, even if the total energy released wasn’t exceptionally high.

Cosmic Consequences: Earth’s Atmosphere Takes a Hit

The implications of the BOAT didn’t stop at its sheer intensity. The gamma rays from this event were so powerful that they momentarily disrupted Earth’s ionosphere, the layer of our atmosphere teeming with electrically charged particles. Sitting just 50 to 1,000 kilometers above us, this layer was pushed down by the BOAT, akin to the effects of a massive solar flare. If a burst 2 billion light-years away can alter our atmosphere, what might happen if one were closer?

The BOAT also raised questions about our understanding of cosmic particles. The Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) in China recorded tens of thousands of photons from the event, far more than any other GRB. These findings challenge current models of particle physics, suggesting that our understanding of how gamma rays travel across the universe might be incomplete. Could this event point to new, undiscovered particles like axions, which some scientists theorize could be linked to dark matter?

What This Means for Our Understanding of the Universe

The BOAT event is more than just a record-breaking gamma-ray burst; it’s a puzzle piece in the larger mystery of how the universe works. It challenges our understanding of star formation, particle physics, and the origins of the elements that make up everything around us. The findings from the BOAT suggest that there might be unknown processes at play, ones that could require a revision of the Standard Model of particle physics—a model that has been the bedrock of our understanding for decades.

As scientists continue to study this event, one thing is clear: our universe still holds many secrets. Whether the BOAT is a rare fluke or a sign of something more significant, it serves as a reminder of how much we still have to learn about the cosmos. And while gamma-ray bursts like the BOAT might not pose an immediate threat to humanity, they do remind us of the vast, powerful forces at work in the universe—forces that could, under the right circumstances, have a profound impact on our planet.
