Came in off of an advertised special... chartplotter with a chip. Got the unit home and no chip. After reaching out this morning I got nothing but attitude from some kid answering the phones. Basically, pound sand. Asked for the owner, Ernie, and got the same response. Left contact info and will see if Ernie calls back. Ernie, get the kid off of the phone... horrible attitude and bad for customer retention. Kid, if you are making Minney's your career move, get better at your job.
Minney's rocks!! If they have what you need, you know you've scored on a deal... We go there for little parts for old boats and for big things like when we had to rebuild the head...completely in love :)
Whoa. I sail very little, but often go browsing this place for ideas and inspiration. Beware, you may leave this place with ideas of adventure, so take caution and set a budget. If you're going to browse, check out the map room upstairs where almost every map there is $1.95. You'll leave with an armful 3 hours laer. (true story) Also, they have buckets of stainless hardware that can cost a fortune brand new. Great place for the guy with a garage and a short DIY list.
It saddens me to see the negative comments about my store. I am attempting to retire and and trying to ease into the back ground. The man that bitched about our electronic prices might find it interesting that an e-bay seller spends 2 to 3 grand a month purchasing items at our "off the shelf" prices less a 10% volume discount, many of the items he purchases are electronics. I am constantly lowering prices and sometimes raising them. Found a brand new Edson 18 GPM bilge pump my crew had priced at $79.00? Best price on Amazon was $600.00 plus. I added a one in front of the seventy nine and its still a great value. Sorry bout the poor attitudes of some of my crew. I'm good to them do profit sharing and just gave them all a $100.00 gift for labor day. The guy you bitched about gives me a hard time also. If you got a bitch or there's something you want and think the price too high (in a junk store, no one wants to pay the asking price, that's why pawn shops totally over price their merchandise so they can haggle) e-mail me directly at [email protected] We are approaching 60 years in business, all in all, WE MUST BE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT!!! I was in the market for a decent used spinnaker, and found one listed here for a reasonable price -- particularly considering they were running a 30% off special. I narrowed my choices down to two sails. Chuck sent pictures of the two sails promptly. I chose the better of the two -- a radial-head rated as a 7. In comparison, another loft wanted three times as much for a sail with patches and stains and no bag. The sail arrived today. I am thrilled with the condition -- a nice, clean sail with minimal signs of use which even included a turtle bag. Now, the turtle bag shows some signs of age and I don't think it's original to the sail, but it was a bonus, and I have no complaints whatsoever. Unlike some other outfits I've dealt with, Minney's doesn't gouge on shipping. For around $200, I've got a sail that should give good service for many years. I will certainly give these guys my business in the future.

Minney's is the jam. Great people, always super helpful. The price is always right and they have great inventory.

up in Los Angeles area. They have a fairly large inventory of and other . I'm considering a used sail from them which is rated to be in Good condition and wanted to know if anyone bought from them before and could comment on their rating system or dealing with them in general?
I can spend $3,000 on a new one or $700 on a used one that should last me 4-5 years, which is probably as long or longer than I'm going to keep the .

Sails? BillKny says it correctly - just go look at the sail. I'd never buy a used sail unseen. Minnies has always had a pretty good rep.
(I'll get skewered for this.... but a _new_ Rolly Tasker sail for your will be less than $2K. But still more than $700)

OR. . That sail went missing. North immediately made a new one and shipped it which arrived and is on my boat.
About a year later my original new sail turned up in an Amazon warehouse somewhere in the U.S. that had been under construction. My local dealer texted me to let me know it had been found. Hmm??? So what are you going to do with it now? IPY only made 41 of my model so it won't fit on any other boat. He told me it goes into the used sail inventory at North, not his loft. I bought that sail for 1/2 the of a new one. I had no idea North had a used sail department.

I bought a sail rated 6. It has been used about 20 times a year for two years since I bought it and I have made many . I will be lucky to get through this year, the third season without a major failure.
So I believe the rating systm is fairly accurate. The price was very fair. It's been fine for Can Races and I have no regrets in buying that sail from Minneys. I'm looking at a couple of others to find one to replace that sail.

and buying pre-owned (nyuck nyuck) Minneys is a pleasure to visit and shop. I found their fastener bins to be most useful - buy by the pound price rather than by count.

from Minneys and returned it as it did not fit. The rating seemed accurate and I believe you have 10 days to return for a full refund.
I am looking to get some hatches from them now.

Minney’s Yacht Surplus Closing for One Year
The Minney family has been running Minney’s Yacht Surplus in Costa Mesa for well over 50 years, with Ernie Minney at the helm since he and his family completed their circumnavigation in 1970. So right now seemed like a good time for a break. But it is just a break. Ernie sent us the following note:
“We will be closed the entire year of 2020 for remodeling. My staff has departed, and there is no one to handle sales or shipping.”
“Projects include the repaving of the back parking lot, new restrooms, cleaning and painting sail containers, building new spar racks, and better display spaces and lighting in the lower part of the store.
“Sorry for the inconvenience. I am reading your emails but don’t have the time to answer all of them. If you have a refund coming, want to cash out of Minney Money, etc., I’ll get back to you. Have a great year.”
PLEASE reopen. your store is best of all places for buying goodies for our boats. Much good wishes to you and your family and hurry back
I have to wait an entire year to have one of those great Saturday morning bagels??!! This will be a character building experience for all of us loyal customers.

Yes, I have bought sails and other stuff from Ernie Minney. This is a SoCal institution. The man is honest, the staff are helpful and his rating of sails are fair and objective. That said, go look at the sail and make your own evaluation. (Besides, browsing through his store is like Disneyland for sailors.)
