The Riviera, which stretches from France to Tuscany, is home to a broad range of destinations where summer fun and gastronomic elights collide with medieval heritage and nautical customs. The Ligurian coast, once home to the Republic of Genoa and repeatedly raided by Saracen pirates, is now a popular tourist destination with both well-known attractions and lesser-known gems. The western 'Riviera di Ponente' is more suitable to sand lovers, whilst the eastern 'Riviera di Levante' is more suited to shingle and rocks.
