Race: Inside Riva's First 50 Metre Superyacht
This 50-metre Riva takes the storied brand into a whole new size bracket. Carlo Riva would have been proud, says Risa Merl
When the Riva 50 Metri made her public debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2019, the name emblazoned on her transom – Race – gave a hint as to who her owner was. And in case there was any doubt, the treasure trove of Ferrari memorabilia on board and a very unusual automotive-inspired bridge made it crystal clear.
As a board member, chairman of product development and 13.2 per cent stakeholder in the Ferretti Group , parent company of Riva, Piero Ferrari’s choice of builder is unsurprising. But this famous engineer’s passion for the brand is genuinely infectious. “Riva details are distinct from any other yacht,” he enthuses.
At 49.9 metres, Race is the largest-ever Riva yacht, proudly previewed in June 2019 at Venice’s Arsenal, during an exclusive client event. She’s also the first to emerge from the Riva Superyachts Division , which was established in 2014 at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, where its CRN, Custom Line and Pershing superyachts are built. The name Riva most vividly evokes the sexy runabouts that made the brand famous in the 1960s and 70s. But Carlo Riva always envisioned a place for larger Riva boats, as seen in his collaboration with De Vries ( Feadship ) and later CRN on the 24-metre Riva Caravelle series, and his personal yacht, 30.5-metre Vespucci , which was delivered in 1978 and relaunched in 2018 after a thorough refit.
Two exterior styles, each drawing inspiration from classic Rivas, are offered on the same technical platforms in the Riva Superyachts series, in 50-, 60-, 70- and 95-metre sizes. This first design is inspired by the 1964 Riva Caravelle series. The second option is sportier, with rounded lines and a more aggressive profile, taken from the Riva coupé yachts and seen on the current Riva 76 Perseo and 88 Domino Super.
The Riva 50 Metri’s exterior and interior were created by Officina Italiana Design in concert with Riva’s in-house team. “Race takes inspiration from the Caravelle, which was a true masterpiece conceived by Carlo Riva,” says Sergio Beretta, CEO of Officina Italiana Design, which he founded with chief designer Mauro Micheli. “The challenge was to innovate without forgetting the DNA of the Riva brand.”
In essence, Race is a highly modernised take on the classic Caravelle. Both yachts feature parallelogram windows, as well as forward-sloping lines that give the impression of movement. During the Monaco show, Race had an enviable position at the very end of Jetée Lucciana, so you could admire her silver hull and clean and simple lines. “ Race has a great personality,” says Micheli. “She has three straight lines that define each level. The design is clean, and we stayed away from overworked, elaborate or redundant lines and shapes, both in the exterior and the interior.”
The exterior paint job is cool grey with a muted 20 per cent gloss finish, so as to avoid reflections seeping inside from her large windows. “The owner wanted lots of light and panoramic views,” says Beretta. “As with any other Riva yacht, we have paid great attention to the use of glass that gives light to the interior and puts the owner in contact with the surrounding nature.” Emphasis has also been given to external living spaces. According to Micheli, Ferrari wanted to have cosy spaces outside – like the forward deck lounge – where he could enjoy the yacht while under way.
Ferrari was hands-on in every aspect of the build. “We worked with the owner from the start,” says Stefano de Vivo, the Ferretti Group’s Chief Commercial Officer. “We decided each detail with him, and he was involved in the project from the first day of thinking about the layout until the decision of the position of the plates at the end. This yacht is very much a part of him.” Ferrari’s previous boat was a Custom Line Navetta 37 motor yacht, and he also has a Riva 76 Bahamas.
One of the first things that de Vivo points out is the use of lightweight materials derived from the aviation industry: a sandwiched panel made of fibreglass and Nomex – the latter is also used in Formula One cars. A veneer goes over the top to give the look of wood, but it’s much lighter.
This veneer is found on all exterior panels, ceilings and the built-in exterior furniture. “By decreasing the weight, you have much better results in terms of fuel consumption,” says de Vivo. “At 14 knots, Race burns 300 litres per hour with the engines and generators on. It’s a very good result for us.” Powered by twin 1,360hp MTU 8V 4000 M63 diesel engines, this full-displacement yacht in aluminium alloy reaches a top speed of 15 knots and has a cruising range of 3,500 nautical miles at 11 knots.
It was also vital that the first Riva 50 have the essence of an iconic Riva. This translated to an obsession with the material selection and a bevy of little details – even the stainless-steel drains on the deck are emblazoned with the Riva logo written in miniature. Custom doorknobs, similar to those seen on the Riva Dolcevita, were moulded to fit the owner’s hand perfectly.
Race has a holistic design, the same materials used inside and out to create a sense of harmony. Exterior features are brought inside, such as the teak decking of a classic Riva, which is found in the dayhead and the corridor leading to the bridge. All the materials used are familiar to the Riva family lineage – rich mahogany, gleaming stainless steel and lots of leather. A darker tone of mahogany was chosen to specifically mimic the colour used on the Aquariva models.
The interior of Race is modern, masculine and distinctively Riva. There isn’t a dizzying array of materials; instead the design team concentrated on a uniform colour palette of grey and white, accentuated by mahogany, stainless steel, white statuario marble with grey veining and an abundance of glass, like the glass-framed main stairwell. Narrow strips of mahogany on the ceilings in the saloons and cabins add dimension and hide the air-conditioning output, as the air filters out between the wooden slats. These slats are carried throughout the boat, from the main saloon to the hallways and the guest cabins.
The dining room has a soft grey carpet, and a pantry directly off this space hosts a dumb waiter serving three decks from the lower deck galley. “Following the owner’s wishes, the galley is situated on the lower deck – this is just one of the layout options of the Riva 50,” says Micheli. “This allowed us to obtain more space on the main deck and create a unique master suite.”
Moving the galley allows the entire forward main deck to be laid out to fit an owner’s needs. Ferrari opted for a media room just before the master. Videoworks designed the entertainment system, which is outfitted with James speakers. This cosy spot is a shrine to all things Ferrari, including a painting of the owner’s car and Formula 1 memorabilia signed by the winning drivers.
A glass wall separates the media room from the hallway, and an electric curtain in a silver metallic finish can close off this space for privacy. With an en suite off the media room, it can be converted to an additional guest suite, bringing the overall accommodation capacity up to 12. Though Ferrari usually has only four to six guests on board, it is good to know for a future Riva 50 Metri owner that this is possible. Below decks are four guest cabins – three doubles and one twin. The materials are the same that you would find in the owner’s area, with a prevalence of leather and grey tones. “We wanted the design to flow seamlessly everywhere,” says de Vivo.
The interior volumes were arranged to allow Race to come in just under 500GT. Some compromises had to be made, as in the upper saloon, which is a bit smaller than you’d typically find on a 50-metre yacht. Instead of being full-beam, the designers opted for walk-around decks outside.
In order to make the space feel larger, windows inside the upper saloon descend on either side and the aft doors open fully, letting a breeze come through and creating an indoor/outdoor living area. The controls for the windows are toggle switches, like those found on old Rivas such as Vespucci.
The upper aft deck dining table, which seats 10, is made of Corian, just like a table you’d find on a smaller Riva. “Corian is coming back in fashion – it’s easier to clean and you can polish it in case of scratches,” says de Vivo. The mesh chairs by Dedon are ergonomically designed and so comfortable – you might sit down at dinner and never want to get up. But the sundeck beckons you to lounge for a post-dinner drink with loftier views. It is covered by a carbon-fibre hardtop with a forward angle, matching the geometry of the exterior. The stylish lounge chairs are crafted from mahogany bases with leather straps that raise or lower the back. Even in these tiny details the Riva lineage is clear.
That goes for the bridge as well, where wood floors were chosen to match a classic Riva. “This is a technical area, but we think of it as a guest area,” says de Vivo. “So the finishes and quality of the interior are the same.” The steering wheel is a work of art, custom made and formed from a single piece of titanium. “The price of the boat includes everything but the wheel,” he jokes. But it’s the helm seat that really catches the eye. It is not your usual captain’s chair, but a genuine driver’s seat from a Ferrari California. It had to be augmented so it could work on board a yacht.
“It was a big challenge really because chairs coming from Ferrari cars work differently – you need a key for the electric mechanism of the chair to work, otherwise you can’t move or adjust it,” says de Vivo. “So we had to customise it before installing it – and it took us a lot of time!”
Wing stations are found on either side of the bridge, and there is a forward lounge area where the owner can sit and watch the yacht come into port, staying out of the way of the crew. The sunpads here, which rise via a hydraulic lift, conceal water toys. Of these, the “Ferrari-red” jet ski does not exactly match the cool silver tones of Race. “It would make more sense to have the jet ski in grey, but he didn’t want to repaint it,” says de Vivo. “So we built this to hide the jet ski.”
A seven-metre tender is held below in the garage, which has a shell door for launching. When it is launched, the space is transformed into a beach club with loose furnishings. There is enough space for the area to be used as a gym even when under way with the tender inside.
The second Riva 50 Metri is currently in build at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, with delivery slated for early 2021, before the summer season. According to Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi, seeing the Riva Superyachts Division come to life was a dream of Carlo Riva.
“I’d like to try and cruise on her,” Riva said when he first saw the renderings of the 50-metre yacht that would become Race. He was taken by the boat’s simple yet elegant lines, says Micheli. Sadly, Carlo Riva passed away before Race was launched and did not get to see her completed. But his dream of the Riva brand growing, literally and figuratively, has certainly been realised.

Riva 50 m Race
The First Riva 50 Metri, RACE
Embracing all the qualities of the Riva brand, the 2019 superyacht RACE is celebrated as the paragon of its portfolio. The 49.9-meter/ 164-foot masterpiece, inspired by Carlo Riva’s Caravelle steel-hulled series popular in the 1960s and 1970s, is the first yacht delivered by the Ancona-based Riva Superyachts Division. Distinctive, refined, and a joy to sail, RACE is in a class of its own.
Take the name, for instance. RACE reflects a passion for speed from its very hands-on owner and long-time Riva collaborator, Piero Ferrari. Working together with Riva parent company Ferretti Group’s product strategy committee, along with Officina Italiana Design and the Riva Superyachts team, RACE further elevates Riva’s already stellar functional and aesthetic position.
Throughout its long history beginning in 1842, Riva has displayed a respect for the art of Italian yacht building. Attention to detail and fine craftsmanship that establish a yacht as a Riva are subtly on display throughout RACE in all the right places. Stamped with the Riva logo, gleaming hardware is impeccably wrought and beautifully polished, down to the exquisite door handles fitted to the owner’s own hand. Think custom bollards, moorings, and drain covers. Mahogany and polished steel on gunwales, cap rails, and lifelines continue the nod to Riva’s heritage.
Also present and accounted for, the Ferrari brand adds pulse-quickening details that complete the yacht’s truly distinctive, one-of-a-kind status. Think obvious choices like a captain’s chair borrowed from the Ferrari California driver’s seat, and a steering wheel sculpted from a sizable block of solid titanium. Think less obvious, more technical choices such as innovative use of honeycomb construction, fiberglass, Corian, and Nomex to keep weight to a minimum while improving durability.
Exterior Details
A two-decade working relationship between Officina Italiana Design and Riva easily decided the design firm co-founders Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta as the right choice for both exterior lines and interior design. The duo is responsible for the design of all contemporary Riva builds.
Creating the clean chic signature and understated luxury expected of Riva yachts for the past two decades, Officina Italiana Design set to work on RACE, knowing this yacht for one of Italy’s most revered luxury brands must be breathtaking.
Dovetailing their mastery of the Riva elements with Ferretti’s Product Strategy Committee engineers and architects, Micheli and Beretta penned a simple profile; masculine, elegant, and timeless. Windows on the bridge rake back, paying homage to Carlo Riva’s 1978 Vespucci. The forward lean of the steel displacement hull, the angles of the glazing, and the strong sweeps of the ascending aluminum superstructure suggest motion. The refined aquamarine waterline lets everyone know she is, without a doubt, a Riva.
Interior Details
An effortless extension of the beautiful decks and outdoor spaces, the interior of RACE displays a light, fresh welcome to life at sea for up to ten guests in five cabins. Excesses removed, and essentials refined, guests are encouraged to focus on the experience itself, celebrating amid comfortable surroundings and perfectly balanced furnishings without unnecessary design distraction.
Hushing footsteps and softening the spaces, large, plush area carpets lay atop white Apuano marble floors. Walls of leather echo leather-covered headboards, while slatted mahogany panels add depth and privacy to ceilings and walls, serving the additional purpose of disguising air conditioning vents. LED spots respond to the sophisticated Lutron automation system, enabling guests to fine-tune the lighting according to mood. Statuarietto marble tables finished in polished steel strips stand at the ready next to pale grey leather sofas and chairs, accented with deep grey pillows and throws and the occasional splash of color.
A glass-framed main stairwell graces passage from the main deck to both the lower and upper decks. Amidships, an additional stair connects the lower deck galley and crew quarters to the main deck service area, dining, and deck space. This design departure localizes service traffic away from guest areas, and offers extra space to the main deck.
A dumbwaiter delivers silent service from the galley on the lower deck to the main and upper decks. Cold room and abundant storage are adjacent to the lower deck galley as well, keeping service areas efficiently located. Exceptional livability aboard RACE is enhanced by the optimization of space, ensuring its owner a high degree of privacy as the crew moves freely to efficiently complete daily operations.

Is There A Ferrari Yacht?
Table of Contents:
Lazzarini Design has unveiled the GranTurismo Mediterranea (GTM), a 27-meter superyacht concept inspired by Ferrari’s classic design. The Italian stallion is designed to run like a Ferrari, with a hybrid propulsion system featuring three engines. The GTM is a hyperyacht with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, with a gross tonnage of 137.5 meters. This Ferrari boat is a race winner and one of the highest-priced yachts in its class.
Ferrari has previously collaborated with yacht builders Riva to build 30 Riva Ferrari 32 speedboats as a waterborne representation of their innovative and technologically advanced Formula 1 credentials. In 2024, Ferrari announced plans to enter the world of competitive sailing under the guidance of team principal and navigator Giovanni Soldini. The vessel will be manufactured in Italy and could compete in major ocean races. Ferrari has not yet revealed any details about the vessel it plans to compete with, but it is expected to build a sail boat to race with.
One of the 1,311 F40s built by Ferrari is currently hosted on an opulent yacht for this weekend’s Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The Luxury Yacht RACE: A Masterpiece by RIVA Yachts. RIVA Yachts, a part of the Ferretti Group, has built the luxurious yacht RACE in 2019. The yacht is a masterpiece designed by Mauro Micheli from Officina Italiana Design.
About RIVA Yachts. Founded in 1842 in Italy, RIVA Yachts is a world-renowned yacht builder, known for its cutting-edge designs, quality craftsmanship, and luxurious yachts. With over 177 years of experience, RIVA Yachts has built some of the most iconic yachts in the world, and the RACE is no exception.
RACE Specifications. The RACE is powered by 2 Caterpillar engines that provide a top speed of 15 knots, while its cruising speed is 11 knots. The yacht has a range of more than 3,500 nautical miles, making it ideal for long-distance cruises.
Who owns the $1.5 billion dollar yacht?
2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion). In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield, and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.
1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion). History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-karat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.
This is why people like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos work to keep their yachts out of the public eye. Though we are not including Jeff Bezos’s yacht, Koru (Maori for “coil”), in this list because it is a sailing yacht and thus excluded from the realm of these motor yachts, it created controversy in the Netherlands when its presence became known. Jeff Bezos’s abided the $500 million price tag of Oceanco, the Dutch custom yacht builder, to create the 417-foot megayacht. But when the company, at Bezos’s behest, requested that a local bridge be dismantled to make way for its gigantic mast on its journey from the shipyard, public sentiment turned against the cento-billionaire, and Oceano shelved its request. Maybe a port like Monaco would be more accommodating?
How much is Mark Zuckerberg yacht?
The group of megayachts that have been sailing the waters of Spain’s Balearic Islands since the arrival of good weather has welcomed a new member. While last year it was Amazon founder Jeff Bezos who debuted his $500-million toy called Koru, this year, it was tech entrepreneur Mark Zuckerberg who is sailing the Mediterranean with his latest acquisition: a megayacht called Launchpad. The 118-meter-long vessel, made by Feadship from the Netherlands, is valued at $300 million. The luxury yacht was completed last March and was delivered to Zuckerberg on May 14, the same day that the Meta founder and owner turned 40.
The ship flies the flag of the Marshall Islands, in the region of Micronesia, and, according to its technical specifications, it is 118 meters (387 feet) long, 17 meters (55 feet) wide and has a capacity for 24 guests, to which up to 48 crew members can be added. It can reach a speed of 20 knots with a range of 3,000 nautical miles, and the cost of its annual maintenance costs is more than $30 million.
The luxury yacht was designed by experts from Monaco-based Espen Øino International, which has a long track record in designing large vessels. Little is known about its interiors, beyond the fact that they were designed by Zuretti Interior Design, a French company dedicated to yacht interior design. The Launchpad has three decks, in white and navy blue, the bow has a tennis court, while on the aft deck, there is a helicopter to bring in guests from the mainland. On one side of the hull there is a glazed terrace for sunbathing or dining in front of the sea. During the time that is has been moored in the Bay of Palma, in Mallorca, slides and inflatable water toys have been seen in the sea.
Who has the richest yacht?
History Supreme. History Supreme is worth 4.8 billion dollars and is undoubtedly one of the most expensive yachts in the world to date. It has a magnificent look to it as it is covered entirely with solid gold.
Solid gold of 10,000kg is used on this 100-foot-long yacht; its owner is Robert Knok who is one of the wealthiest Malaysians. This beautiful yacht is a masterpiece by the famous designer from the United Kingdom, Stuart Hughes.
The most brilliant thing about this yacht is its master bedroom, where you will witness wonderful decor from meteorite rocks and a statue built from genuine tyrannosaurus rex bones on a wall. There is also a wall aquarium in the room, which is adorned with 68 kg 24-carat gold. All of this adds to the magnificence of this oceanic palace.
Streets of Monaco. The streets of Monaco make the dream of a floating city come true. It is worth 1.1 billion dollars and is a testament to beauty. The crafts of this unique yacht make us wonder how much thought is put into its construction it.
How much is the Ferrari speed boat?
The Ferrari speed boats were manufactured as part of a collaboration between Riva and Ferrari. Called Riva Ferrari 32 – the number referring to its length, one of the units is up for grabs at the RM Sotheby auction at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale. Done in a bright shade of Rosso Corsa to instantly establish the Ferrari connect, the boat gets two Vulcano 400 V8 engines, each putting out 390hp. It has a top speed of 54 knots or around 100 kmph which makes it skim across shorelines much like how Ferrari cars race past on solid ground.
But much like Ferrari cars, the Riva Ferrari 32 is not just about speed but has a generous dose of luxury as well. The cabin features a leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel with lettering in yellow. There is also a sleeping area here which can fit two, complete with a stereo system.
While it may be a collector’s item and not really meant to hit the high waves hard, the Riva Ferrari 32 claims to be every bit as iconic as any other Ferrari around.
Who put F40 on a yacht?
Thats right, at this year’s 80th Monaco GP, Film Director Tom Claeren, Car & Car Italy, and Altr teamed up to showcase the ultimate F1 superyacht. The Ferrari F40 was craned in and placed at the bow of the luxury superyacht, on display for all in attendance to see and enjoy. Stealing the show, the Ferrari F40 became the main attraction of the Grand Prix as it was seen and posted by everyone in attendance. With a phenomal portfolio of photos, renowned photographer Riocam was on-scene to document the monumental event. Ferrari’s legendary F40 supercar is recognized as one of the greatest sports cars of all time, making it the perfect centerpiece for the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.
