MARINA DE CALA D’OR

yachthafen cala d'or mallorca

Latitude 39º 22′ N – Longitude 03º 14′ E

The Marina de Cala d’Or sports and yacht harbour is located in the very first settlement on the Spanish coast. Cala d’Or is surrounded by a marvellous natural environment with fine sandy bays and lush Mediterranean vegetation.

The harbour was already used by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Carthaginians due to the ideal landscape conditions in the area of the harbour entrance, which offer boats protection from wind and waves. King Philip V of Spain ordered the construction of a fortress to defend this place of refuge.

The sports and marina of Cala d’Or is a unique enclave for nature and boat lovers.

Along 40 miles of coastline, you will discover numerous small coves where it is worth anchoring: Cala Llombards, Cala Figuera, Porto Petro, Portocolom, but also the Mondragó nature reserve – all of them dreamlike, typically Mediterranean landscapes where you can enjoy an unforgettable holiday with your family.

The sports and yacht harbour Marina de Cala d’Or is located approx. 65 km from Palma de Mallorca. Son Sant Joan airport is located approx. 8 km south-east of Palma, directly on the access road to the Palma-Llucmajor motorway. The journey by taxi or hire car takes around 1 hour.

Along the coastline, which stretches for 40 miles, you can anchor at numerous idyllic bays: Cala Llombards, Cala Figuera, Porto Petro, Portocolom…and of course the natural park of Mondragó – all of them dreamlike, typically Mediterranean landscapes where you can enjoy an unforgettable holiday with your family.

Privacy Overview

Cala d´Or

Cala d´Or

Der Ort Cala d‘Or

Cala d’Or

Hafen cala d'or.

12 Things to Do in and around Cala d’Or

by mallorcaunderthesun | Aug 5, 2022 | Experiences | 0 comments

12 Things to Do in and around Cala d'Or

Cala d’Or in Mallorca is a great destination for a Summer holiday. So check out my list of top 12 things to do in and around Cala d’Or.

Cala d’Or provides the ultimate relaxing holiday. Packed full of hotels, apartments and beautiful low-rise white washed. villas, many visitors to Cala d’Or are happy to while away the days lying beside the hotel swimming pool.

However, for those keen to break out and explore the area, here is a selection of 12 things to do in and around Cala d’Or to help you get the most out of your holiday.

This post contains  affiliate links.

Table of Contents

1. book a boat trip in cala d’or.

All around Cala d’Or are opportunities to book boat trips. This is by far the best way to see this area of Mallorca.

My advice is to head to Cala d’Or Marina where you will find numerous opportunities to book a charter or even a shared charter.

I can recommend going aboard the Capalina shared charter in Cala d’Or. We experienced a 2.5 hour shared charter in July 2022 and you can see our amazing experience in this video playing on this page.

It really is fantastic value for money if you do not want to charter an entire boat yourself.

In 2022, the cost to join the Capalina shared charter is just 99€ per person, and everything is included.

This means lunch, drinks, and the use of the snorkelling, paddleboard, and bodyboard equipment on the boat. There are life jackets if needed and pool noodles too.

You only need to take your swimwear and beach towel.

There is an option to charter the entire boat for your party which will cost 1,000€ for a party of 10.

There are other boat trips that can be booked in Cala d’Or. Just take a walk around Cala d’Or Marina and explore your options.

2. Watersports in Cala d’Or Marina

There are many more watersports activities to enjoy from Cala d’Or Marina.

You can join a fishing boat charter with the Sea Riders, or even join a jet ski tour.

The cost of a jet ski tour is 99€ for half an hour jet tour from Cala d’Or Marina and you can book it here:

The tour includes a tour guide, fuel, and insurance. What’s more, a jet ski license is not required.

3. Visit the Cala Mondrago and Playa S’Amarador Natural Park

One of the most beautiful coves and beaches in Mallorca is in the Cala Mondrago and Playa S’Amarado Natural Park.

The two beaches link together by an adjoining path which also offers stunning views of the turquoise waters.

This area does get extremely busy during the Summer months.

If you are visiting with a party, then there is a lovely shaded picnic area from Cala Mondrago.

There are also a couple of restaurants on the beach and on the main road leading into Cala Mondrago.

Take the walkway around to Playa S’Amarador. From here there are various points you can jump off the rocks into the water (be careful!), snorkel and swim.

You’ll see many superyachts moored here too.

There are beach chringuitos (beach bars) where you can get refreshments and toilets too.

There is also a car park a short walk from both Cala Mondrago and Playa S’Amarador.

Playa S'Amarador Mallorca

My tip is to arrive early in the Summer to ensure you can get a parking spot.

You can also get the 521 TIB bus from Cala d’Or to Cala Mondrago.

If you want to see how to take TIB bus in Mallorca, you can read about it here.

4. Dolphin Watching in Cala d’Or

A must-do activity in Cala d’Or is to see the dolphins. You will see the Starfish glass bottom catamarans cruising the calas picking up passengers several times a day.

The catamaran follows a route along the coast so this is a great way to see the other calas (or coves).

The boat then heads out into the water towards the fishing boats where the dolphins will be waiting.

It’s almost guaranteed that you will see the dolphins. Besides, where there is food, there are dolphins.

You can read more about dolphin watching in Cala d’Or here .

The cost of this excursion is around 50€ for an adult and 30€ per child.

It includes a stop-off at Cala Mondrago for a snorkel and swim, so essentially this is two days out for the price of one!

5. Explore the coves in Cala d’Or

Cala d’Or as a resort is quite spread out and covers a large area.

So if you so wish you can explore the many calas on foot.

From Cala Gran beach, you can easily walk to Cala Petita, as well as down to the Marina.

From there you can also walk to Caló des Pou and over to Cala Egos.

Going in the other direction from Cala Gran beach, you will arrive at Cala Esmeralda and then Cala Ferrera and onto Cala Serena.

Don’t forget I have videos showing exactly what these Calas are like on my Youtube channel and you can watch them here:

Cala d’Or in Autumn

Cala d’Or in Spring:

6. Visit the Night Markets in Cala d’Or

During the Summer months, you will find a couple of night markets in Cala d’Or.

The most popular is the night market in Cala d’Or centre around Burger King in Plaza Toni Costa .

Here you will find some great holiday souvenirs including clothes, jewellery and arts and crafts.

The market runs from around 18:30 until 23:00.

There is also a night market in Cala Egos centre on a Thursday evening also running from 18:30 until 23:00 where you will also find similar products.

I would be really keen to see photos from either of these Cala d’Or markets. So please go and post your experience over on the Mallorca under the Sun Facebook group here.

mallorca under the sun amazon shop

7. Golfing in Cala d’Or

Golfing enthusiasts will enjoy some of the best golfing on the island at the Vall d’Or golf club.

This 18-hole golf course is different to many others in that it is elevated with amazing coastal views.

With all the facilities expected from a high-end golf club, visitors can also enjoy a meal at the Máxime restaurant.

8. Horse riding in Cala d’Or

For those looking to get out and explore the Cala d’Or countryside on horseback, then there are some great horse riding excursions to enjoy.

Rancho Jaume is the go-to riding stables in Cala d’Or offering tours of the calas, coves and countryside.

Of course, you will not see horse tours taking place during peak season, but this is a great professional centre to try for an alternative activity, whatever your horseriding level.

9. Nightlife in Cala d’Or

The nightlife in Cala d’Or is not as lively as you would find on the South West of the island in resorts such as Magaluf or El Arenal, but the nightlife here is fun all the same.

The main areas to enjoy include the bars and restaurants along Cala d’Or Marina, and also in Cala d’Or Centre.

Visitors looking for a place to dance into the early hours of the morning should head to Club Tiempo which opens at 22:00.

Located on Carrer Toni Costa 33, in Cala d’Or, you can see where this and many of the other bars are located in Cala d’Or centre.

10. Visit Es Forti in Cala d’Or

Cala d’Or lacks the historical monuments that you would find in Palma.

Therefore I would recommend if you are looking to uncover some history and architecture in Cala d’Or, my recommendation is to visit Es Forti .

Built as a military base in1793, Es Forti is also a site of Cultural Interest here in Mallorca.

You can get views of Es Forti from Cala Petita , or you may wish to walk there from Cala d’Or marina.

Es Forti Cala d'Or Mallorca

11. Visit the Caves of Drach or Caves of Hams

For one of the top 12 things to do in and around Cala d’Or, jump on the local bus to Porto Cristo to visit the Caves of Drach and the Caves of Hams.

This is a great excursion to make if you’ve had too much sun and your skin is screaming for a break.

Head underground at either of these two attractions to see incredible rock formations.

And then enjoy a walk through Porto Cristo itself.

You can book tours from Cala d’Or here to the Caves of Drach and the Hams Caves:

Alternatively, take the 428 TIB bus to Porto Cristo at the bus stop at the top of Cala d’Or town centre.

You can see my experience of the caves of Hams in this video here:

12. Visit Portopetro from Cala d’Or

A visit to Cala d’Or needn’t be all about the beautiful beaches and coves.

Just a 10-minute bus journey on the 521 TIB bus will take you to the heart of Portopetro, where you can experience a real working fishing village.

Come here to enjoy an evening meal, and stroll along the harbourside.

There are some great fish restaurants here too.

If you have found more things to do in Cala d’Or that I haven’t mentioned in this article, please leave me a comment below.

Visitor comments

  • "We heard good things about the Yacht Club food whilst we were holidaying in Cala d'Or, and we certainly were not disappointed. Yes, it is a bit more expensive than the other restaurants in the Marina, but you get what you pay for, and this certainly hit the spot." - Trip Advisor
  • “Stunning view of marina accompanied by excellent food and service.” - Trip Advisor
  • "A really great night with a superb BBQ, sat by the infinity pool with good friends listening to Jackie singing... what could have been better. We use the venue often for either a meal or a quiet drink. The Yacht Club MUST be the best setting in the whole of Cala d'Or to relax with a nice cold beer!" - Trip Advisor

16 of Mallorca's most beautiful beaches to explore in 2024

Jun 6, 2024 • 8 min read

yachthafen cala d'or mallorca

Mallorca has many fantastic beaches to explore, including stunning Cala Varques © Alex / Getty Images

With almost as many bays and calas (coves) as days in the year, Mallorca is, for many, all about the coastline and its glorious sandy beaches and rocky coves.

There’s something for all tastes, from the wild sands of Es Trenc on the southern tip of the island to the white sands and windsurfing of Pollença and Alcúdia in the north. The west coast boasts rocky calas and clear waters, while the east is home to sandy harbor towns and the party beaches of Badia de Palma.

Here's our guide to Mallorca's best beaches by region.

North coast

1. platja de formentor.

You'll find some untrampled joy on the north coast, where beaches are rare, like Platja de Formentor , a narrow strip of golden sand backed by pine forests in a secluded bay. The shallow water makes this a great spot for families, and paddleboards and kayaks can be hired to explore the rocky coastline. This is the site of Hotel Formentor  (reopening in August 2024), a grand hotel that originally opened in 1929 and has played host to figures such as Charlie Chaplin, Audrey Hepburn, F Scott Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Taylor, among many others.

Tip: Arrive by boat from Port de Pollença or by car via Cap de Formentor and its many viewpoints, like the Mirador del Mas Pas. Bring your camera for magical photo opportunities.

2. Playa del Alcúdia

Playa de Alcúdia is Mallorca’s longest beach, so it never feels crowded, even on busy days. It's well-developed with resorts, water sports and amenities including a playground for children. The gentle waters are a draw for kayakers and families with young children.

Tip: Alcúdia  is a laid-back resort with an excellent selection of restaurants and attractions to which you can retreat when the tide comes in. Head for the Old Town and walk along the old city walls .

A small secluded cove with rocky surrounds

Northeast coast

3. cala mitjana, cala torta, cala estreta and cala matzoc.

In the Llevant Peninsula Natural Park , these beaches are close enough to visit in one day. From Artà, a 10km-drive (6 miles) through mountainous woodland leads to the wide, sandy beach of Cala Torta with its turquoise waters, then walk 15 minutes to Cala Mitjana . With icing-sugar white sand and liquid jade waters, this beach – which, even in the high-season month of August, might have only a handful of people on it – is dazzlingly beautiful. Further north again is Cala Matzoc . Often empty, this sandy beach is a vision of how much of the Spanish Mediterranean coastline must have looked a hundred years ago.

Tip: Bring your own supplies as you won't find many amenities around here.

4. Cala Bota, Cala Virgili, Cala Pilota and Cala Magraner

Just north of busy Cales de Mallorca, a walking trail leads for several kilometers through woodland to a series of four pristine coves. The first – and easiest to reach – is Cala Bota; a good 30-minute walk north is Cala Virgili, then Cala Pilota. These are small rocky coves visited by a few yachts. Just north again is the best beach of the lot, Cala Magraner; here, a finger of transparent water juts inland to meet the sandy cove.

Tip:  Wear comfortable shoes as you'll be doing a lot of walking.

5. Cala Varques

Secluded and tranquil, Cala Varques is located in Cales Verges de Manacor nature reserve and is accessible only by a 15-minute walk through a pine forest. Known for its clear waters and naturist-friendly vibe, what it lacks in facilities it makes up for in tranquility.

Tip: This beach isn't easy to find. It's accessible via a dirt path from the main road and then a short walk through the forest. Bring your own supplies.

A rocky inlet at sea leading to a small sandy cove where people are relaxing on the beach

Southeast coast

6. caló des moro.

Probably the most Instagrammed of all Mallorca's beaches thanks to its picture-perfect setting, Caló des Moro is a slim strip of soft white sand between tree-lined promontories. It gets crowded in summer, so visit early or late in the day. The clear and calm shallow waters are great for snorkeling.

Tip: The beach is accessible through a narrow and steep flight of stairs. There are no restaurants here so pack your own picnic.

7. Cala Santanyí

Around 10km (6 miles) from the popular market town of Santanyí is Cala Santanyí , a white-sand cove. At its loveliest before summer is in full swing or just after the holiday crowds leave, the crystalline waters are family-friendly and perfect for snorkeling. There are hotel and restaurant options by the beach, showers and toilets nearby, and parasols and sunbeds to rent. You'll also find water sports on offer.

Tip:  Paddleboarding or kayaking are popular, as are dive trips – try Cala Santanyí Diving School .

8. Cala Mondragó

Located in Mondrago Natural Park, Cala Mondragó is a protected blue-flag beach with fine white sand and turquoise water. It’s ideal for families, with a beach bar and nearby car park. A limited number of sun loungers and parasols are for rent, and some portable toilets are available, but otherwise, it's low on amenities.

Tip: For a quieter experience, walk to the less-frequented Cala S’Amarador.

A swimmer heads out from a rocky cove into the sea

South coast

9. cala llamp.

Near the upscale resort of Port d’Andratx, with its boutiques and art galleries, is Cala Llamp , where locals swim and snorkel in the sparkling, bottle-green water. There’s no sand, but you can lie on a shelf of rock that tilts gently into the sea. The rugged, pine-cloaked cliffs, dotted with villas, rear up like an amphitheater behind. It’s a 30-minute walk from town, or you can drive there.

Tip:  For even more tranquility, Cala Blanca, a little further south, is – for the moment – totally undeveloped and absolutely beautiful.

10. Platja des Trenc

Start the day early and head for the pristine Platja des Trenc – so picture-perfect it has doubled as the Caribbean in several films. Backed by sand dunes and set in a natural park, this wild white-sand beach with turquoise waters stretches for over 10km (6 miles). There are a couple of small  chiringuitos  (snack bars) but little else in the way of facilities. The beach is best enjoyed for an early-morning swim or to catch the evening sunset.

Tip:  Head to Colònia de Sant Jordi for lunch. Cassai Beach House or 5Illes Beach Restaurant are good picks.

Beautiful view of the cove Cala Pi, idyllic beach seaside Majorca island, Spain

11. Cala Pi

This Caribbean-like cove of Cala Pi is sheltered by natural cliff sides and is only about 50m (164ft) wide. You can reach it via a steep staircase. While it's generally low-key, its small size means it can feel a little crowded during peak times. The water is still and perfect for snorkeling. However, there are no facilities at beach level – just rows of boathouses – so bring any provisions you’re likely to need.

Tip: Take a detour to the nearby market town of Campos that hosts weekly markets every Tuesday and Saturday from 9am until 2pm.

Southwest coast

12. playa de camp de mar.

In the luxurious Camp de Mar resort, this beach offers fine sand, clear waters and excellent facilities, including a small playground and pedalos for hire. A wooden footbridge connects to La Illeta, a tiny islet where you can enjoy food and drinks at its little cabana.

Tip: Take a boat trip from here to Sa Dragonera Natural Park for wildlife spotting.

13. Portixol

This is one of the best urban beaches in Mallorca. Portixol, a former fishing village now a suburb of  Palma , has a boutique feel with stylish residents and trendy seafront restaurants. The sandy beach is only about 100m (330ft) long and is popular with Palma residents, especially when the workday ends.

Tip: The beach is surrounded by excellent restaurants, so you're never too far from a good meal.

14. Cala de Deià

Cala de Deià , below the pretty village of Deià, is best reached via a short, steep 2.5km-walk (1.5-miles) from Deià. The rocky cove is popular with the international crowd, and rustic chiringuitos  serve simple but pricey meals. Parking is difficult in high season, so consider hiking from the village or taking one of the buses from Deià that operate from May to October.

Tip: Head for lunch at Ca’s Patró March , a popular spot overlooking the sea.

Aerial view of Cala Deia

15. Cala Banyalbufar

Cala Banyalbufar is a rugged shingle and pebble, seaweed-scattered cove, where you can swim or sip a cold one at the beach shack on the rocks and look out over the dark turquoise water. It's great for snorkeling and there’s also a lovely waterfall nearby. To reach it, look for the steep steps down to the tiny harbor and traditional fishing huts.

Tip:  Unless you arrive early, it's best to park in the village of Banyalbufar and walk down to the beach.

Northwest coast

16. sa calobra.

This tiny white-pebble beach washed by emerald-green waters is picture-perfect, but it isn't easy to reach. The road snakes down from the mountains through hairpin turns that may make those with a fear of heights or prone to vertigo and car sickness feel queasy. Despite the tricky route down, S a Calobra is incredibly popular and, in summer, the small cluster of restaurants here is usually busy by late morning.

Tip: If you can't stomach reaching this beach by road, you can take a ferry from Port de Sóller. The journey takes about 1 hour.
