A Closer Look at the America 2.0 — Replica, Hybrid or High-Tech Schooner?

Photo: Classis Harbor LInes

Classic Harbor Line ‘s schooner America 2.0 is a fascinating design. Designed and built by the Scarano brothers and delivered in 2011, the boat is, notionally, a replica of the schooner yacht America of 1851, after which the famous America’s Cup was named. America 2.0 might be called a modern interpretation of the original. It could also be called a hybrid or even simply a modern high-tech schooner. The Classic Harbor line website refers to it as a “ tribute to the first schooner America .” Whatever you call the schooner, it is worth taking a closer look.

Yesterday, my wife, son and I took a lovely two hour sail on America 2.0 from Chelsea Piers in Manhattan down to the Statue of Liberty and back on the Hudson River.  It was a great afternoon. The sun was shining and the southwesterly breeze was just strong enough to make for a nice beat south and and easy run heading back up the river.  Captain Kat Van Zee and her three person crew were professional, friendly and accommodating. They had a full load of passengers and the crew still managed to jump smoothly between raising and tending sails and serving beer, wine and soda.  Captain Kat kept watch over everything as she steered through the always congested lower Hudson.  Overall, it was a delightful afternoon.

From the dock, America 2.0 is a lovely sleek black hulled schooner, not unlike the original. Her transom is a varnished cedar, showing off her wood construction, which might not otherwise obvious given how fair and smooth her black hull is as she floats gracefully alongside the pier. Her decks are teak and her rails are varnished. At a glance, she appears wholly traditional in design and construction.

One of the first unusual things that you might notice about the boat are the masts. Unlike most gaff-rigged schooners, there are no spreaders near the masthead to help spread the load into the shrouds. There are also no shrouds on America 2.0 . What at first glance appear to be shrouds are part of the running rigging. The masts, which look to be built of wood, are wholly free standing. The masts are actually built of carbon fiber, the same material which makes the modern America’s Cup catamarans possible. They are only sheathed in cedar to make them look like spars on a traditional schooner.

Later, when we were away from the dock, I did a double take as I saw Caleb, one of the crew, hauling the throat halyard of the mainsail, raising the sail and the forward part of the sizable gaff single-handed, as a fellow crew member, a young woman, did the same on the peak halyard. On schooners that I have sailed on, the mainsail halyard requires more hands to hoist the heavy wooden gaff and sails. On America 2.0 , the lighter weight carbon fiber gaffs make the crew’s hauling significantly easier.

When we pulled away from the dock and headed downriver, we were initially under power, yet the loud clatter of a diesel engine was pleasantly missing. America 2.0 is driven by electric motors powered by eight banks of lithium-ion phosphate batteries under the main cabin sole. There is also a 200-hp John Deere diesel tucked away below deck, but apparently, it is rarely used.

The batteries and electric motors are not all that is hidden on America 2.0 . Although she may look traditional, her construction throughout is highly engineered and modern. While she is built primarily of wood, she is not built with frames and planking. Her hull has an end grained balsa wood core sheathed on both sides with layers of laminated cedar. Internally, she is supported with laminated wood frames as well as a number of aluminum ring frames which are bolted to an aluminum floor and garboard structure which support the unstayed masts.  The aluminum lower floors also are the structure from which a lead fin keel with a winged bulb is suspended.

The original America was modeled after the fastest craft of her day,  New York harbor pilot boats. The America 2.0  is also designed to her time. With her carbon fiber masts, her light weight composite structure and her modern under-body, America 2.0 is one of the faster schooners of her size. America 2.0 has clocked speeds of 17 knots but typically is capable of over 10 knots. She has won top honors for several years running in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.

So, call her what you will — a replica, a hybrid, a high-tech racer or a tribute, America 2.0 is beautiful boat. Thanks again to Captain Kat and her able crew for a wonderful afternoon sail.

A Closer Look at the America 2.0 — Replica, Hybrid or High-Tech Schooner? — 4 Comments

Thanks for the virtual sail. Free standing masts and electric motors — sounds good to me.

I’ll always remember in 2001 the eponymous (anonymous) columnist The Wharf Rat wrote in the weekly Newport: This Week about this America, “I could dress up in war paint and feathers but that wouldn’t make me an Indian…this boat is not a replica.”

Oops , guess that was the prior America…the two seem somewhat similar in their non-replica shape etc.

Small technical comment: lithium -iron- phosphate– batteries that will finally usher and see the end of lead-acid on our boats. 🙂

She features shroudless carbon fiber spars, a two part hull with a removable, aluminum deadwood section for water and fuel tanks and features electric motors for propulsion. Her hull is constructed out of an end-grain balsa core, sandwiched between two layers of Port Orford Cedar over wooden laminated frames, an aluminum cabin structure with integrated mast supports, and bullwarks and cabin soles constructed out of plascore, an aluminum honey comb material, for improved strength and additional weight savings.

She was launched in August 2011 and is Classic Harbor Lines’ flagship vessel at Chelsea Piers. She spends her winters in Key West from November to April.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Scarano Boat

America 2.0

President and lead designer John Scarano and his team took sailboat design to the next level by combining more than 35 years of naval architecture and marine engineering experience, plus the latest technologies and materials, and putting them all into America 2.0.

She features a self-standing rig, a two part hull with a removable, aluminum deadwood section for water and fuel tanks and electric motors for propulsion.  Her hull planking is constructed out of an end-grain balsa core, sandwiched between two layers of Port Orford Cedar over aluminum ring frames and wooden laminated frames. Structural aspects of the vessel include the use of an aluminum, composite board, carbon (masts), plascore and a variety of other composite materials. For more on the structure read the article in the Society of Naval Architects and Engineers publication .

She was launched in August 2011 and is Classic Harbor Lines’ flagship vessel at Chelsea Piers.  She spend her winters in Key West.

Rather than a heavy wooden rig aloft, one finds carbon-fiber masts, booms and gaffs. Classic Harbor Line

Classic Harbor Line (operators of a series of classic style vessels in Newport, RI, New York City and Boston, MA) bring the 105-foot Schooner America 2.0 (of NYC, NY) to Key West, FL for the winter months of November through April.

This 105 foot sailboat, certified for 75, was designed and built by the same boat-builders who crafted Key West’s former pride, Schooner AMERICA. Scarano Boat Building of Albany, also crafted all the vessels in the famed Classic Harbor Line fleet: the 1920s style yacht “Manhattan” of NYC, and the schooner Adirondack of NYC as well as the Adirondack III of Boston MA, and Adirondack II of Newport RI.

Classic Harbor Line is well known for their outstanding captains and crew and standard of hospitality. Whether you sail with them in Newport, Boston, New York, or Key West, guests are known to not only rave about the beauty and maintenance of the boats, but of the lasting warm impression that their hosts provide. Guests are treated like royalty, beverages are cold and the vessels sail like a dream.

Do sails sell out frequently?

Sails do sell out. We are currently operating at approximately 50% or less capacity. Potential guests are encouraged to check the website or call the week of the date you would like to attend to check availability for public trips and to book as early as possible. Please see Health & Safety for important information regarding COVID-19 updates.

What happens if the sail is sold out?

Unfortunately, we do not have a wait-list for our sails, so please book in advance. We do sail 7 days a week!

Is there parking, where? And how much is it?

Parking in Key West is very limited, and operates on a first come, first serve basis. There is a local municipal parking lot at the corner of Caroline Street and Margaret Street, very close to our ticket booth where you check in! Further information will be provided upon purchasing your tickets.

Do I need a ticket for my young child?

All passengers, regardless of age, must have a ticket for capacity purposes. Please be sure to take this into account when purchasing tickets for your party. Children ages 3 and younger ride for free on all of our trips, but you’ll still need to enter the appropriate number of Infant tickets labeled “Free” when purchasing. Children over the age of 3 must purchase a full priced “Child” ticket.

What exactly do we see on the sail?

Our route is indicative of the breeze we are given, but we guarantee crystal clear blue-green seas and a water side view of Key West Harbor. Additional sites may include Fort Zachory Taylor State Park, Sand Key Reef, Mallory Square, Sunset Pier, marine wild life of many varieties, and fellow vessels within the Key West fleet. We may also be lucky enough to catch the magnificent “Green Flash” (just as the sun is about to disappear from the horizon, it changes for a moment to a bright green color).

Is food served during the sails?

Yes! We serve complimentary hors d’oeurves, including cheese and crackers, veggie and dip, and shrimp cocktail.

How about drinks? Should I bring those?

Outside alcoholic beverages are not permitted. This romantic sunset sail features complimentary champagne, wine, beer, soft drinks, and water. (One quick note: We are not a unlimited booze-cruise. We aim to create an elegant, relaxing, peaceful, and safe experience for all of our guests.) Cocktails are available for purchase.

Is the Schooner America 2.0 safe?

Absolutely. While known for its speed, the Schooner America 2.0 is a safe and gentle vessel. Along with your captain, there is a minimum of two crew members on every sail to make sure you feel comfortable and at home on the water. We are stocked with water, beverages, blankets, pillows, and life jackets should you feel you need one. There are also private marine heads (bathrooms) in the salon below.

How steady is the sailing? Am I likely to get seasick?

The Schooner America 2.0 is a steady, gentle vessel. It is very rare for our guests to become seasick. While most people do not experience any sea sickness on the schooner, you may want to consider light medication if you normally take it for motion sickness. We cannot officially advise you to take any medication, however.

Is there a bathroom on the boat?

Yes, the boat is equipped with two bathrooms that are accessible at all times. We call them “marine heads,” and they are very simple to use. The Captain will explain directions for their use once you are on board the vessel.

Can I stow anything (eg, my luggage) during the sail?

There is an area below deck where you may store your belongings. Please keep in mind that this area is not guarded, so we cannot take responsibility for any broken, lost or missing items.

What should I wear?

For our sunset sail we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and footwear (high heels are not recommended). Feel free to come in light, casual clothing, but bring a light jacket just in case, especially since we’ll be out on the water in the evening!

Where does the sail finish?

Our sails will end at the same dock from which they departed.

Can I get a refund or reschedule my tickets after buying them?

Because of COVID-19 precautions, we are currently offering a “no questions asked” refund policy up to 24 hours in advance of your trip. Should you need to, you may cancel your reservation for a full refund, reschedule, or convert to gift credit up to 24 hours in advance of your trip. Exceptions within the 24-hour period may be made under extenuating circumstances.

Do you ever cancel sails due to bad weather?

The sail usually runs in light rain and other moderate weather situations. The only time we cancel a trip is in the event of severe or unsafe weather conditions. Our captains monitor the radar to watch fronts and cells in the area on days when inclement weather is possible. Cancellations are made on the day of the sail, by the Captain, up to one hour prior to sail time. If you have purchased tickets for a sail that is canceled, you will have the opportunity to reschedule your tickets (subject to availability), take a full refund or receive credit towards a future event.

What happens if it starts raining when we’re out on our sail?

Don’t worry, we won’t melt! Trips with a little added excitement due to weather have proven to be some the most memorable bonding experiences for our guests. (This all depends on attitude of course…) Our captains will never take the boat off the dock if they believe the weather conditions to be unsafe, however, and are constantly monitoring the weather once off the dock.

Is gratuity included in the price of the sail?

Because of COVID-19 precautions, we have added a “pre-paid gratuity” option to our ticket purchasing to encourage touchless interactions. Gratuity is not included in the base ticket price. Cash tips are greatly appreciated at the end of the trip. Gratuities can be handled via Venmo as well. Thank you in advance for taking care of the crew!

Is the schooner wheelchair accessible?

No, unfortunately America 2.0 is not wheelchair-accessible.
