"Racing sailors in particular are keenly aware that once the breeze pipes up, you need to make certain adjustments to keep your sail shape optimized. With a mainsail, that begins with tweaking the halyard to achieve a luff tension that's in the ballpark for the given conditions. Then—if your boat has a standard Marconi rig—you'll begin making adjustments to the backstay, outhaul, and cunningham to fine-tune the sail's overall shape. Of course, the most frequent adjustments are made using the traveler and the mainsheet, and on board the most aggressively raced sailboats, the latter is rarely cleated."

"Of all these controls, perhaps the one most overlooked by non-racing sailors is the outhaul. Most boat owners follow the 'set it and forget it' approach with this control line. But a properly attended outhaul can afford you surprising control over the lower portion of most mainsails. I say most mainsails because there are different design approaches to the foot section of these sails. On the vast majority of mainsails, you either have a foot that's attached to the boom via slides or a bolt rope, or you have what is known as a loose-footed arrangement wherein just the tack and some portion of the clew are attached."

But fewer are aware of the important steps required for properly storing sails. Too often, mainsails are left on the boom, and roller-furling headsails left wrapped around the headstay for the duration of the winter. This kind of exposure to mother nature will ultimately lessen the lifespan of those sails."

"Most sailors know the damage that continuous exposure to ultra-violet radiation can do to sails. But keep in mind that the heat from the sun can also be damaging, and it's difficult to gauge. The ambient temperature might be 95 degrees in the boatyard, but it's not uncommon for the surface temperature on an object — say a mainsail under its cover on a boom—to be 115 degrees. The cumulative effect of days spent in that kind of heat will be structural damage."

Every sailor should understand just how important sails are. They act as the engine of your vessel and they are what keep you going while on the water. This is one of the most important parts of a vessel and it needs to be chosen carefully. In as far as sailing is concerned, new or used sails are the main thing where efficiency, speed, and safety are concerned. When you have good ones, the boat does not heel much, and it reduces weather helm, this in a way makes it easier for you to steer and it can be pleasurable to being out on the water. Sails also help you move at a faster pace and makes sailing so much easier. What are the main types of new & used sails? They can be categorized into four. The mainsails are the main force on a vessel. These can be fitted with reefs, which can be as little as one or as many as four. These include staysails, genoas, and jibs. Most yachts have got different individual new & used sails or single roller kind of furling headsail. The size & shape of sails are optimized to suit different strengths of wind. In some cases, a number is used to denote from one to four. Larger numbers are an indication of sails that are progressively smaller and are used in stronger wind situations. Downwind and reaching sails These are code zeros, cruising chutes, and asymmetric and symmetric spinnakers. Storm and heavy weather sails The trysail and storm jib is very important for purposes of safety, especially on offshore yachts that could encounter challenging conditions. Just like the roller reefers have shapes that are inefficient when they are reefed in strong winds, small weather jibs are an important addition to the sails that you may already have. When you have new & used sails, then you end up improving the different handling characteristics of the boat and also, you improve the reliability and speed. Sailboat Sails material A few decades ago, woven Dacron was the only available option the only reason why this material was chosen was that the cloth was very strong and was a resilient one, especially for racing. For cruising, the material could be softer, but more durable. Because of advancements in technology, today we have access to wider material varieties that are used for sailing. Even today, woven polyester or Dacron is the most accessible option because they are not as expensive and last longer than many other options. However, they tend to lose shape very quickly. Because of tugs, they do not retain shape or design, even when the fabric is still strong and usable. What you should note is that not all materials are the same; Dacron’s are not the same. When it comes to racing, the cloth is usually coated using melamine finish to ensure that it does not scratch much. For cruising purposes, the finish is impregnated. This means that the cloth is bathed in glue to bind yarns. This offers a long-lasting and softer finish. When the fabric is still new it stretches when winds are strong. There are yet other sailboat sails that make use of woven cloth and these incorporate strong fibers that make the boat sails resistant and durable. This kind of strong fiber is best for cases where the sails need to stay in the same shape. Laminate sails The fibers that are used to create these sails for boats are load-bearing and they are sandwiched between Mylar films. The common fibers, in this case, are aramids, carbon, and polyester. Polyester is the cheapest and carbon the most expensive. Also, the sails are able to retain shape as the price increases. The more material resistance increases, the flex deteriorates. This means that the carbon sails have a shorter life span than any other sail before the failure of the structure happens. About SOLING 1 METER

The Soling Class is the largest class affiliated with the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA). It is a one-design class. The One Meter was designed to be a low-cost, kit-based one-designed class primarily targeted at the beginning Radio-Controlled (R/C) sailor. It is often the local class that beginning sailors start with and yet it is challenging enough that most advanced racers still race their Soling. The hull, deck, keel, and rudder are made from vacuum formed polystyrene plastic. Only flat single-paneled sails are approved by the Soling Class. Only two channels are used to control the boat. One channel for both sails and the other channel for the rudder. Transmitter may have additional channels but they are not allow to be used in sanctioned races.

The soling one meter class.

The Soling One Meter is a kit-based one-design class scale-model boat based on the former Olympic-class keelboat of the same name. All hulls, decks, keels, and rudders are produced by a single manufacturer. This uniformity makes the Soling One Meter a one design class. One of the major goals of a one design class is to make all boats as equal as possible so who wins the race is based more on the ability of the skipper rather than on the boat itself.

Soling 50 (RC Model)

Soling 50 (RC Model) is a 4 ′ 2 ″ / 1.3 m monohull sailboat designed by John & Laurie Converse/J. Lange and built by Vortex Model Engineering (USA) starting in 1970.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Sarasota Model Yacht Club

Welcome - About Us

The Sarasota Model Yacht Club got its start in Sarasota in 1996.  Our club sails the American Model Yachting Association-sanctioned one-design Soling One Meter R/C , RC Laser, DF65, DF95 and (during the winter only) IOM model yachts. The club meets six (seven times a week when the IOM sail) times per week for practice and racing. We sail at the  Nathan Benderson Park at  the West Lake on Athletes Drive.   The West Lake is off of Honore at Athletes Drive. 

    The Soling 1-Meter kit-based model is a pleasure to sail. As a one-design, it is an ideal introduction to model yachting, yet it provides a  competitive boat for the best of veterans as well and is available from  “ Boatyard John ” (our club builder). 

    The RCLaser is factory-built ready to sail and available at  intensitysails.com  

We also sail the Dragon Force (DF) DF65 and the DF95 RC boats. 

The DF 65 is one of the fastest growing class of RC sailboats in the U.S. The boat has earned this distinction by being a great one-design sailing boat while being the least expensive ready-to-sail boat on the market. At around $350 for a boat with radio and receiver and about 3 hours of assembly and you're on the water.    

The DF95 is the fastest growing class in the USA and is near Ready-to-Sail in a kit form from  Radiosailing.net  or from “Boatyard John”. 

    All skill levels are welcome, from neophytes to crusty old salts! You will find that our members can be very helpful in getting you involved with this great hobby. Come on out to watch the hard-fought races or join us for practice and racing.  

The Soling One Meter (S1M) :  This S1M the largest class in the U.S. and Florida. We sail Solings Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Race Captains rotate throughout the year. Craig Collemer is the Race Captain.

The RC Laser :  This is the largest RC class in the world. We sail Lasers on Friday. Steve Lippincott is the Race Captain.

The DF65 and the DF95 :  These are the newest and fastest-growing restricted one-design class in both Florida and the U.S.  

We sail DF95's on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Bill Hendrickson is the Race Captain. The DF65 fleet sails Monday and Wednesday.  Rob Wucki is the Race Captain. 

IOM The IOM Class is considered a Development Class by the AMYA. 

The International One Metre class is the fastest-growing class in the world. This class is distinct and different in purpose from the US One Meter class, and complements the International Marblehead Class as a simpler, less expensive boat. The International class has a one-design rig, and has minimum weights on the keel and overall, and restricts the hull material. The net effect of these differences is that the typical cost spiral of lighter weight, and more expensive materials and manufacturing processes, is arrested. This allows amateur designers and builders a chance to design and build with little concern that they are building in a disadvantage due to weight. This is a feature not found in any existing AMYA class and is one of the reasons that the class is so popular around the world.  We sail IOM's on Sundays in season.  John Stryhn " Boatyard" is the Race Captain.

 The club races at Benderson Park on the West Lake.  The West Lake is located at the intersection of Honore and Athletes Drive, Sarasota Fl.

    YES. We encourage sailors of all skill levels to join us. A Mentor Program is available for beginners. 

How can I get a S1M, RC Laser DF65 or DF95?

    Soling 1M:   We have a member called “Boat Yard” who has used/refurbished S1Ms’ for sale. You can also buy a new ready-to-sail boat from John. John's email [email protected] . 

     RC Laser:   A new RC Laser is available at intensitysails.com  at a cost of less than $600 with 3 complete rigs.

     DF95:  A new DF95 can be purchased from Radiosailing.net in kit form for $345, up to $610, which includes a transmitter and receiver, B rig, B sails, LiPo battery, custom stand and sail numbers for A and B sails.  The boat can also be purchased and assembled by club member  “Boatyard” .  The assembly takes 3-4 hours. 

   DF65:  The Fleet at SMYC is unique in that it caters to those unable to walk long distances while racing due to shorter courses then the other classes. The boat is available at http://radiosailing.net/. The boat can also be purchased and assembled by club member  “Boatyard”

Do we have dues/fees?

Dues are $75/year and a signed liability Waiver for SANCA is required.   SMYC is also a member of the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA).  The AMYA has many resources for Individual members. Their web site is www.theamya.org.

Membrane Technology is where sails are created over full-sized 3-dimensional molds by sandwiching a scrim cloth and a yarn layout between two thin Mylar films, then heat fusing everything to make a single cloth-like sail. The sails have fibers running up the leech, and tack fibers radiate out to the leech and many fibers from the clew radiate to points along the luff creating an interlocking structural grid that stretches less for its weight, holds its shape over a wider wind range, and retains its designed shape longer. This membrane technology has dominated sailboat racing worldwide. Membrane sails were used exclusively by the America's Cup and every team racing in both the 2002-2003 and 2005-2006 Volvo Ocean Race.

Over the past 14 years, WJ Sails has been looking for some way to print on Dacron. Because of the slippery coated finish Dacron has, nothing wanted to adhere to the surface. Graphic for the big cruising boats are currently printed and then cured under 800 degrees of heat. Problem with this process is the cloth shrinks around 8%, and not proportionately making it impossible to get a perfectly legal - lined up sail when done. Just recently WJ Sails found a process which does the job without heat and applies the ink just like a giant inkjet printer, but uses a special UV light to cure it.

So, WJ Sails took lots of pictures of different scrim mylars for the background, then drew to scale all the thread lines coming out of each corner of the sails, overlay some graphics, and after about 30 hours of design work, now have a very realistic 3DL America's Cup Volvo Ocean Racer looking Sail for the Soling 1M.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

Stocks to buy: The Nifty 50, the benchmark index of the Indian stock market, hit a fresh record high of 23,490.40 in the previous session, ending the week of June 10-14 with a gain of nearly 1 per cent.

The Nifty 50 remained in the green for four sessions last week, but the gains were capped due to the lack of fresh triggers.

After the return of the BJP-led NDA government, the focus is now on policy announcements and the upcoming Budget in July.

Technical analysts see some indication of indecisiveness in the market.

Brokerage firm Axis Securities pointed out that the Nifty 50 formed a 'Doji' candlestick formation on the weekly chart. A Doji candle indicates indecisiveness between buyers and sellers.

"The chart pattern suggests that if the Nifty 50 crosses and sustains above the 23,600 level, it would witness buying, leading the index towards the 23,800-23,900 levels. However, if the index breaks below the 23,300 level, it will witness selling pressure, taking it towards 23,200-23,000," said Axis Securities.

For the week, Axis expects Nifty 50 to trade in the range of 23,900-23,000 with a mixed bias.

"The daily and weekly strength indicator Relative Strength Index (RSI) is moving upwards and quoting above its reference line, indicating a positive bias," said Axis.

Even though the market outlook is positive for the medium to long term, analysts expect some volatility in the near term. At the current juncture, they suggest betting on fundamentally and technically sound stocks.

Based on the recommendations of several experts, here are eight stocks that can rise 4-16 per cent in the next 3-4 weeks. Take a look:

Axis Securities

Lic housing finance | previous close: ₹ 731.65 | buying range: ₹ 725-711 | target price: ₹ 804-825 | stop loss: ₹ 675 | upside potential: 13%.

LIC Housing Finance has demonstrated a breakout above the ₹ 680-550 consolidation zone on the weekly chart, indicating the continuation of the medium-term uptrend.

During the pattern formation, volume activity tends to decline, while at the breakout, there is an increase in activity, indicating heightened market participation.

The stock took support at the 38 per cent Fibonacci retracement level of a rally from ₹ 315 to ₹ 672, positioned at ₹ 540, confirming a medium-term support base.

The weekly strength indicator RSI has given a crossover above its reference line, generating a buy signal.

Natco Pharma | Previous close: ₹ 1,210.60 | Buying range: ₹ 1,185-1,163 | Target price: ₹ 1,296-1,330 | Stop loss: ₹ 1,113 | Upside potential: 10%

Natco Pharma has demonstrated a breakout above the cup and handle pattern on the weekly chart, with a strong bullish candle indicating the onset of an uptrend.

The volume activity increased at the breakout, indicating an influx of market participation at the breakout level.

It displays a bullish trend on the weekly chart, characterised by higher highs and higher lows, supported by an upward rising channel.

It recently took support at the lower band and is now heading towards the upper band.

The weekly strength indicator RSI has broken above a downward-sloping trendline, generating a buy signal.

Mayur Uniquoters | Previous close: ₹ 659.75 | Buying range: ₹ 640-628 | Target price: ₹ 732-765 | Stop loss: ₹ 585 | Upside potential: 16%

On the weekly chart, Mayur Uniquoters has broken out above a medium-term multiple resistance zone around ₹ 622 with a strong bullish candle, indicating the continuation of an uptrend.

The stock is trending in a higher high-low pattern on the weekly chart, indicating a medium-term uptrend.

It closed above the weekly upper Bollinger band, generating a medium-term buy signal.

The weekly strength indicator RSI has given a crossover above its reference line and broken through the downward-sloping trendline, thus generating a buy signal.

Lemon tree hotels | previous close: ₹ 150.18 | target price: ₹ 168 | stop loss: ₹ 137 | upside potential: 12%.

This stock has witnessed a steady uptrend with a strong ascending channel pattern on the daily chart.

It indicates a breakout above the falling trendline at ₹ 145 level to improve the bias and indicate a further rise.

"With the RSI on the rise, indicating strength, there is much upside potential from the current levels. We suggest buying the stock for an upside target of ₹ 160-168 levels, keeping the stop loss at ₹ 137," said Koothupalakkal.

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) | Previous close: ₹ 153.65 | Target price: ₹ 174 | Stop loss: ₹ 144 | Upside potential: 13%

This stock has witnessed a steep erosion recently from the peak of ₹ 175, with support taken near ₹ 125. It has recovered strongly to surpass the 100-period moving average (MA ) at ₹ 140, witnessing further pullback.

It has improved the bias by moving above the 50EMA (exponential moving average) level at ₹ 153 with a positive bullish candle formation on the daily chart, anticipating an upward movement in the coming days.

The RSI is technically well-placed at the current levels, making the chart look attractive again.

Titan Company | Previous close: ₹ 3,530.05 | Target price: ₹ 3,840 | Stop loss: ₹ 3,400 | Upside potential: 9%

The stock indicated a decent breakout above the falling trendline at ₹ 3,450 recently, breaching above the 50EMA level at ₹ 3,445.

Moving past the 200 period MA at ₹ 3,480 level improves the bias anticipating further rise in the coming days.

"With the RSI going strong with further upside potential visible from the current rate and with the chart technically looking good, we suggest buying the stock for an upside target of ₹ 3,680 and ₹ 3,840 levels in the coming days, keeping the stop loss of ₹ 3,400," said Koothupalakkal.

Jigar S. Patel, Senior Manager of Equity Research at Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers

Titan company | previous close: ₹ 3,530.05 | buying range: ₹ 3,500-3,540 | target price: ₹ 3,675 | stop loss: ₹ 3,445 | upside potential: 4%.

Recently, Titan stock surpassed its previous swing high of ₹ 3,460 and is now maintaining a stable position above it, around the ₹ 3,500 mark.

It has also found support near the 200-day exponential moving average (DEMA) and the 21-day exponential moving average (EMA), making it an attractive buying opportunity.

On the indicator front, the daily RSI has broken through a bearish trendline that has persisted for five to six months, suggesting a bullish bias.

Aether Industries | Previous close: ₹ 854.90 | Buying range: ₹ 835-860 | Target price: ₹ 965 | Stop loss: ₹ 795 | Upside potential: 13%

Following a correction of roughly 80 points, or 9 per cent, Aether Industries shifted its course away from the prior support mark of ₹ 800.

This support level coincides with the lower Bollinger band, implying a potential rebound, particularly given the weekly RSI has broken through a bearish trendline that has persisted for 12 months, suggesting a bullish bias.

"Investors are advised to contemplate buying this stock within the range of ₹ 835-860, envisioning an upward trend with a target price of ₹ 965. To manage risk effectively, it is recommended to implement a stop loss order near ₹ 795, centred on daily closing figures," said Patel.

Jubilant Foodworks | Previous close: ₹ 530.65 | Buying range: ₹ 522-532 | Target price: ₹ 600 | Stop loss: ₹ 485 | Upside potential: 13%

Jubilant Foodworks has two key technical analysis signals- a bull divergence on the daily Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator and a violation of a bearish trend line that had been in place for 3-4 months.

A bull divergence occurs when the stock price forms lower lows while the MACD indicator forms higher lows, indicating a potential reversal from a downtrend to an uptrend.

The breach of the bearish trend line suggests a potential shift in the stock's direction from bearish to bullish.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
