Lone Star Riverboat

Time out says.

One of Austin’s most distinguishing features is the stretch of water that cuts through downtown and goes by three different names: Lady Bird Lake, Town Lake and the Colorado River. Besides being a pretty place to jog or bike around, it’s also great spot to take in the sights aboard one of the Lone Star Riverboat Cruises. They have a sunset bat watching cruise on one of their smaller boats, along with an afternoon sightseeing cruise and a Friday night moonlight cruise, both on their signature boat named The Lone Star. The cherry on top? All the tours are BYOB.

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

Fantastic experience! We are locals that wanted to celebrate my son's HS graduation night in a special way. This was one of the coolest outings we've had around town. Our tour guide was entertaining and thoughtful and even got us to cover from the rain shower that decided to hit just as we got started. We saw some great bats, our beautiful Austin skyline as a backdrop and learned some cool facts about our buildings and the cool bats! We already have plans to book another trip over the summer!

We enjoyed our excursion here. We had not seen Austin's famous bat colony before, and this is a nice way to do it. It's BYOB if your want to bring a beer cooler. But it's a family friendly event, not a party boat, so keep that in mind, too. They made bottled water, Sprite and Coke available for $3 each. They start boarding 45 minutes before they depart. Show up early to sit together if you're a larger party. We spent two hours on the boat, in total, as we arrived just as they opened the doors to start boarding (we were in the boat from 7:30 to 9:30 but on the actual tour from 8:20 to 9:20). You sit in a plastic chair on the deck. We weren't pooped on, but that can happen, so be prepared for that. Maybe bring wet wipes just in case? But it didn't seem to be a problem for anyone on our trip. Bats are not 100% predictable. They don't do the exact same thing at the exact same time every evening. They're small and you won't see them up close. But there were 750,000 of them there when we visited and they definitely started swarming. Pretty cool. The video I took came out pretty good but I didn't get a good photograph of the bats. I tried, but the 2.5x optical zoom in my iPhone wasn't quite enough for a photo but somehow did pretty well in the video. The reason is (and you can probably configure this), shutter speed slows when it's darker, and with a longer exposure, you won't capture anything that's moving. The boat captain is entertaining and informative, and you'll learn a few things about Austin, which we enjoyed. The pictures I took that came out well were of the Austin skyline. You may not feel a need to do this again after you've done it once. But it's not a bad way to spend a couple of hours and the price is right :-)

Thank you for coming out on our bat watching/sunset cruise this week! It is a great value and family friendly as you mentioned. Appreciate your fun-facts and helpful hints for our guests, thank you again.

Photo of David M.

Lone Star Riverboat Cruises was mostly a good experience. It was a company funded outing in the evening after Day 1 of our sales meeting (Sure was a nice looong walk to there from the Austin Hilton...but as they say "Everything is bigger in Texas!") LOL! The food was pretty good - Chicken and Beef Burritos wraps with rice and the bar was pretty well stocked considering the somewhat small size of the boat. The bartender was cool as well. The bat tour under the bridge was pretty cool....outside of a Batman movie, I've never seen such a large swarm! They kinda circled from the bottom of the bridge over the top where people were walking across! No one on the bridge ran or freaked out...guess they're used to it? LOL!!! The only thing I really didn't care for was narrow and steep steps to go up and down to and from the Lower and Upper Levels. Definitely advise to hold the railings with BOTH hands while ascending or descending the stairs and walk slowly!

Thank you, David, for your review, yes, our big boat the Lone Star is a wonderful venue, very unique and seeing the bat emergence is something special too. Glad you enjoyed the food and our service from our awesome captains, they are very entertaining as well. Our stairs are a bit steep to the upper deck, glad you enjoyed the view from up top. We are there for any assistance needed. Hope to see you at another time, best to you and hope you have a wonderful holiday season! Lone Star Riverboat

Was visiting Austin and wanted to have a nice boat cruise. I was super sad that I booked this boat a week after the bats were supposed to leave (apparently Austin tourist spot is watching bats at night). BUT to my surprise I was able to still see the bats, albeit it being November and a lot of them migrating. But now to the experience. The booking was super simple, about $13 per person. I showed up early and got a nice spot. The boat is BYOB so bring a drink or a snack. The tour lasts an hour and we got to see a lot of different buildings, the nearby park, and the bridge with the bats. The captain, Melissa, was super corny and it was so silly and hilarious . Definitely would recommend to anyone coming here

Nov 13, 2023

Thank you for your nice review and happy to you got to see some bats too! They seem to be hanging around a bit later this year with the nicer and warmer than usually weather - bet we will see some next weekend as well. Our captain Melissa is great, and she is funny, glad you enjoyed the narration. See you the next time you visit and thank you again!

Captain Toby is the best! He ensured everyone had a great time and gave us a little extra time to see the bats.

Excellent choice. We did the bat tour our last night and wish we did earlier. So much more than about bats. Great overview of Austin. Captain Mike did a great job.

Thank you for coming out and enjoying the cruise- hope to see you again and yes, our Captain Mike is awesome with his funny narration and facts about the city and bats! See you the next time!

What a delightful experience, on the bat/sunset cruise. I will start by saying we and other customers felt a little deceived, as this tour is promoted often with photos on their double decker boat. That boat is only for private hires, so you're on a small one floor boat. Also they place chairs very close together so it does feel a bit tight. As far as the experience goes, it was great. You need to arrive 45 mins prior to departing because a. there's not much parking in the area and b. The seats fill up so if you want to be seated together get there first. We found 45 mins was just in time for us, as people were already lined up ahead. Pour guide/captain was very knowledgeable and had some fun things to say to keep us entertained. You get to see the sunset, skyline, and bats. The only part I didn't enjoy was when we went into an area with a lot of small flies.

Thank you for your review, glad you had a nice time and please note, our flagship boat is the Lone Star used in some of our photos; however, if you click on the tour of the bats, it does show the one-story pontoon boats used and they are a bit more personable with you getting to hear the narration and ask questions too. We do use the Lone Star for other public cruises - our weekend afternoon cruises and our late-night Friday night cruises and even some bat cruises when not being used. You are very correct about arriving early, seats do fill up quickly and bring a drink, it is warm this summer. Thank you for riding with us, hope to see you again soon!

Lone star riverboat cruise: best way to see the bats in austin.

Please note that this article was written before the pandemic. For full details about limited capacity boat tours and safety precautions due to COVID-19, please visit lonestarriverboat.com .

We all know that Austin is batty for bats. Austin is home to the largest Mexican free-tail bat colony in North America, and we love to celebrate these winged creatures that dwell underneath the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. Seeing the bats swoop out from under the bridge is quite an amazing site!

But what’s the best way to see the bats? And when?

“Bat Season” takes place every year from March to November, and bats emerge around sunset to feed on a variety of flying insects such as mosquitoes and moths. Typically, late July and early August is considered “peak season” to see a spectacular show.

You can certainly join the crowds and stand along the sidewalk of the bridge to wait for them to take flight, we we think the BEST way to see them is from the water. So we decided to hop aboard the Lone Star Riverboat Sunset Bat Watching Cruise for a special “true Austin” experience.

lone star riverboats

The boats available for this Bat Watching Cruise include a large pontoon boat, the Southern Star, that seats up to 60 people and the smaller boat, Little Star, which carries 30. Both are open-air, so you’re sure to get a great view no matter where you’re seated.

Our Favorite LGBTQ Couples on TV, From ‘9-1-1’ to ‘Yellowjackets’

We’re proud of them all year long

Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael L. Silva on "9-1-1: Lone Star"

While we had to bid adieu to several beloved LGBTQ TV characters in the last year, like Stede and Blackbeard of “Our Flag Means Death,” there are still a number of couples to root for on current series that has us feeling Pride all year long.

Let’s toast these fabulous partners who are there for each other despite fires, volcanos, wolves, government interference and their own sometimes foolish selves.

Ronen Rubinstein and Rafael L. Silva on "9-1-1: Lone Star"

TK and Carlos on “9-1-1: Lone Star”

TK (Ronen Rubinstein) and Carlos (Rafael L. Silva) have been through a lot together — including, but not limited to — comas (yes, more than one!), a serial killer, an arsonist, a volcano, TK’s dad Owen (Rob Lowe) commandeering their wedding plans and Carlos’ dad (Benito Martinez) arresting Owen. But the duo, who finally tied the knot in Season 4, is still rock solid.

Liv Hewson and Jasmin Savoy Brown in "Yellowjackets"

Tai and Van on “Yellowjackets”

The teenage soccer players kept their romance secret until they crash landed in the wilderness and Van (Liv Hewson) was mauled by wolves. When it looked like they would all soon starve to death, the survivors threw a “Doomcoming” party, Tai (Jasmin Savoy Brown) created a mask just like the one Van wore to hide her scars and the pair celebrated being out to everyone. In the contemporary storyline, the two (now played by Tawny Cypress and Lauren Ambrose) reconnect as circumstances and the mystery of the wilderness bring them back together.

Aisha Hinds, Tracie Thoms on "9-1-1"

Hen and Karen on “9-1-1”

Firefighter Hen (Aisha Hinds) and rocket scientist Karen (Tracie Thoms) might not have seemed like an obvious couple, but Chim (Kenneth Choi) knew what he was doing when he set them up. Then, after they briefly broke up, Chim scared Karen into thinking that an injured Hen was dead so she’d realize what Hen meant to her. It hasn’t been all smooth sailing ever since, but luckily, these two embrace the chaos.

lone star riverboats

Lestat and Louis on “Interview With the Vampire”

Louis (Jacob Anderson) might have tried to kill Lestat (Sam Reid) and taken up with Armand (Assad Zaman) for now, but viewers — and fans of the original Anne Rice books — know that no matter how much they complain about the other, Louis and Lestat are a couple for the ages.

Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer in Fellow Travelers

Hawk and Tim in “Fellow Travelers”

Their on-again, off-again love affair spanned decades, but the cynical realist Hawk (Matt Bomer), who got married to a woman and had children, and idealist Tim (Jonathan Bailey), who became a gay rights activist, never got their happily ever after together. In the 1950s, when their relationship began and homosexuality was still illegal, Tim simply wanted to have dinner out with his boyfriend and to not have to sneak out of his apartment in the middle of the night to avoid neighbors who might blow the whistle on them.

Jelani Alladin and Noah J. Ricketts on "Fellow Travelers"

Marcus and Frankie in “Fellow Travelers”

Unlike the main couple in this Showtime limited series, reporter Marcus (Jelani Alladin) and drag queen Frankie (Noah J. Ricketts) found a way to stay together despite starting their relationship in the 1950s. That included Frankie forgiving Marcus — who knew that being outed would ruin his career— for abandoning him after a police raid on the gay nightclub were they met.

Lou Ferrigno Jr and Oliver Stark on "9-1-1"

Tommy and Buck on “9-1-1”

Buck (Oliver Stark) has always had a complicated love life, as we witnessed in the first six seasons of the series. In Season 7, his relationship with Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) also got off to a bumpy start when Buck panicked after his best friend Eddie (Ryan Guzman) saw him having dinner with Tommy. Buck finally admitted his feelings both to Eddie — who told him that being bi doesn’t change a thing in their friendship — and Tommy, who was willing to give Buck another chance. We didn’t see much of them after they got together, which on this show means they are happy and drama-free for the moment.

Reynolds (Freddie Denns) and Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) in “Bridgerton

Reynolds and Brimsley on “Queen Charlotte”

These two footmen have a secret relationship in their youth and have sworn to spend “a lifetime” together. But an older Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) is sadly alone. While we don’t yet know what happened to Reynolds, like Brimsley, we can look back and treasure their relationship.

Hannah Dodd, Victor Allii, Masali Baduza

Francesca and Michaela on “Bridgerton”

This ship hasn’t happened quite yet, but the sparks were definitely flying when Francesca (Hannah Dodd) met Michaela (Masali Baduza). The character of Michaela, who is the cousin of John Stirling (Victor Alli), has been gender-swapped from the book, in which Francesca ends up marrying Michael.

Jonathan Groff and Ncuti Gatwa in "Doctor Who"

The Doctor and Rogue in “Doctor Who”

The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) wound up in “Bridgerton” cosplay this season as a mysterious bounty hunter named Rogue (Jonathan Groff) is also hunting for murderous aliens and they initially suspect each other. They realize they have to cause a scene to force the aliens’ hand, so they hit the dance floor, scandalizing the other attendees — but (mostly) saving the day. Although their interaction is brief, their connection is a deep one and we hope to see Rogue again.

Michael Sheen and David Tennant in "Good Omens". Season 2

Aziraphale and Crowley in “Good Omens”

It only took a few millennia, but the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tennant) finally kissed. The pair, who should really be sworn enemies, have instead spent their lifetimes helping mankind and each other. And occasionally saving the world.

Sammy and Yaz on Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

Sammy and Yaz in “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous”

It took five seasons (and nine episodes) before Yaz (voiced by Kausar Mohammed) told Sammy (Raini Rodriguez) how she felt about her, but the moment was well worth the wait because Sammy felt the same way. Their joyous kiss was witnessed — and cheered — by pretty much the whole camp.

Paul, Asha, Lone Star

Paul and Asha on “9-1-1: Lone Star”

Firefighter Paul (a trans character played by Brian Michael Smith) has not had a lot of luck with dating. Not until Asha (Amanda Payton), who recognized her former grade-school friend despite his transition, saying she “never could forget that smile.” Although her being nostalgic about when they were kids made Paul uncomfortable at first, he moved on and asked her to be his date for TK and Carlos’ wedding.

Aniseya (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Koril (Margarita Levieva) on "Acolyte.

Aniseya and Koril on “Acolyte”

These loving, committed characters (played by Jodie Turner-Smith and Margarita Levieva) are raising twin daughters together in this Disney+ “Star Wars” series, making them, in a way, “ queer space witches ,” although showrunner Leslye Headland feels the show isn’t “ queer with a capit al Q .”

The Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets will march through campus prior to the Lone Star Showdown against the University of Texas at Austin on Nov. 30, 2024. An iconic part of the Aggie gameday experience, the Corps of Cadets conducts march-ins prior to every home game in Kyle Field.

Though the Corps hasn’t conducted march-ins prior to home games during Thanksgiving week in the past several years, this year’s march-in will celebrate the return of the football rivalry with the University of Texas while showcasing the full Aggie Spirit for old and new fans alike.

“It is only fitting that the Corps of Cadets welcomes t.u. back to Aggieland with one of the best gameday traditions out there,” said Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Patrick Michaelis, commandant of cadets.

While march-in details are pending the announcement of game time, Aggies and football fans alike can expect a show of pageantry and school spirit from the Corps. The campus march will begin on the Quad, home of the Corps of Cadets, where the firing of the Spirit of ‘02 cannon by Parsons Mounted Cavalry will signal the start of the march. The Corps, led by the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, will lead the Corps off the Quad.

The Corps of Cadets, Texas A&M’s premier leadership development program, is as old as the university. Known as the Keepers of the Spirit and Guardians of Tradition, the Corps plays a key part in upholding several of the traditions for which Texas A&M is known.

“The Corps is special to a lot of Aggies. This rivalry is one of the most well-known in college sports. There isn’t a better way for the Corps to show its support and stand as the 12th Man than showing up in full force”, Michaelis said.

Details for Corps’ march-ins will be posted as game times are announced at corps.tamu.edu/events .

Illinois' Brad Underwood Ready To Start Working On Lone Weakness For Will Riley

Shandel richardson | jun 25, 2024.

lone star riverboats

There a few flaws in Illinois incoming freshman Will Riley's game.

He can do just about everything on the basketball court in an exceptional manner. While he has no major weaknesses on the court, the Illini realize there is one area Riley needs to improve.

At 6-foot-8 and 180 pounds, Riley will never be mistaken for LeBron James. So the plan is to bulk him up some before the season starts.

"Everybody wants to say he's thin," Underwood said. "Some of that's probably true. But, boy, he's a very good athlete ...He's a guy that, whatever the time frame is, one year, two years, whatever it is, will be a very long-time pro if he has the ability to stay healthy."

Riley is considered a one-and-done type talent. The Illini just want to enjoy him while they can. Underwood said strength and conditioning coach Adam Fletcher is in charge of getting Riley physically ready to compete in the Big Ten conference.

Illinois has one of the best programs in that department. Riley, who reclassified for the 2024 class, is expected on campus sometime this summer. That should give him plenty time to work with Fletcher.

"It was just a great fit," Underwood said. "I think in terms of what we were looking for, he's a very, very talented offensive player. He's a young man who scores at all three levels. I would say the definition of position-less is him. He's shown that he can be an elite playmaker, shooter off the bounce, finisher."

DoValue is the frontrunner but other bidders are still involved and the discussions could still fall apart, the people said, asking not to be named because the process is private.

Representatives from DoValue, Lone Star and CaixaBank declined to comment.
