"Too early to make comment" says VisionF Yachts regarding Miami yacht fire

A fire has destroyed the second yacht in VisionF Yachts ' 24.9-metre series, named Flagship . The incident occurred yesterday at Merrill-Stevens Yachts' repair yard in Miami, Florida (28 April).

Speaking to BOAT International , the shipyard released the following statement: "We are in deep sorrow that a fire broke out on our Flagship [while] receiving repair and maintenance services in Miami. We are following the incident closely and it is too early to make any comments regarding the fire. Our only relief about the incident is that no one was injured during."

"Upon arrival, units found a large vessel fully engulfed in flames," read a statement from the City of Miami Department of Fire Rescue. "They encountered very low visibility because of the billowing smoke and due to the complexity of the incident, a second alarm was requested."

The statement continued: "Over 34 units and 100 firefighters, including the Hazmat Team and Fireboat, worked together to extinguish the blaze in just over an hour. As a precautionary measure, all nearby vessels were safely relocated to prevent any damage."

The National State Warning Point was also notified to conduct an assessment into any environmental consequences, including potential spill off.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

82-foot yacht catches fire in shipyard next to Miami River; no injuries

MIAMI (WSVN) - Firefighters battled a fierce blaze in Miami when a brand-new yacht went up in flames.

More than 32 City of Miami Fire Rescue units and 100 firefighters responded to the scene at the Merrill-Stevens Yachts, a shipyard located near Northwest 12th Avenue and 11th Street, next to the Miami River, at around 11:15 a.m., Sunday.

Video posted on social media showed thick billowing smoke coming from the boat house.

“They found an 82-foot vessel, state of the art, fully engulfed in flames,” said Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Pete Sanchez.

Officials said crews managed to save other boats from damage.

“There were also other yachts surrounding that yacht. Firefighters were able to unhook them, ’cause they were obviously on the water,” said Sanchez. “They were able to unhook them and pull them out onto the canal way there, making sure that they weren’t affected, because this is a covered structure where the boats are in water, and there was a lot of smoke, so you can have smoke damage and even flame damage, ’cause the flames were very intense.”

Crews were seen hosing down the Vision F2 yacht for almost two hours.

The state-of-the-art vessel is made of materials that, fire officials said, ignited more fumes, and that made the blaze hard to control.

“And there was the fire boat and the City of Miami Hazardous Materials [Response] Team, which conducted a foam operation to be able to extinguish this blaze,” said Sanchez. “We did find some hot spots, because this is a state-of-the-art yacht with materials that are difficult to extinguish. It also has solar-powered panels on the top and a lot of electrical batteries as well.”

Thankfully, no one was on board the yacht when the fire started.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Large yacht fire on Miami River affects traffic, sparks runoff concerns

Miami Fire crews responded to a large boat fire at on the Miami River Sunday morning.

The fire broke out on an 82-foot yacht at Merrill-Stevens Yachts located along Northwest 13 Avenue.

Cellphone video from Only in Dade showed heavy smoke billowing from the vessel and firefighters working to extinguish the flames.

Officials said fire crews responded to find an 82-foot Vision F2 Yacht fully engulfed in flames. They had very low visibility because of the billowing smoke and due to the complexity of the incident a second alarm was requested, according to Miami Fire Rescue.

"It also has solar power panels on the top and a lot of electrical batteries as well that power those solar panels. So, that is obviously fueling the flames," Miami Fire Lt. Pete Sanchez explained. "We were able to remove it from the coverage structure out into the open area."

Miami Police posted a traffic alert on social media, saying the 12th Avenue bridge along Northwest 7th Street was shut down due to the boat fire and urged drivers to take an alternate route.

Within an hour, the fire was under control and all exposures were protected from sustaining any damage, Miami Fire confirmed in a statement. 

Over 34 units and 100 firefighters were on the scene assisting with the operation, who continued to extinguish hot spots as the morning rolled on. Other crews assisted with removing the surrounding yachts out of the area to limit exposure, according to Miami Fire Rescue.

Fire Rescue said there was not much fuel on board, but still planned to notify the Coast Guard and FWC in order for them to complete an assessment on any damaging runoff that could have gotten into the ocean.

There were no reports of injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

MIAMI – City of Miami firefighters extinguished a large blaze that erupted Sunday afternoon aboard an 82-foot yacht.

According to Lt. Pete Sanchez, the department received multiple calls about the fire around 10:50 a.m.

Firefighters responded to Merrill-Stevens Yachts, located at 881 NW 13th Ave., where they found the Vision F2 yacht fully engulfed in flames.

“Firefighters extended hose lines into the covered structure and found multiple yachts in the water near the vessel of origin,” Sanchez said in an email to Local 10 News. “They encountered very low visibility because of the billowing smoke and due to the complexity of the incident a second alarm was requested.” Sanchez said the Hazardous Materials Team and a fireboat conducted a foam operation to extinguish the flames.

He said no one was on board the yacht when the fire erupted.

“Other crews assisted with removing the surrounding yachts out of the area to limit exposure,” Sanchez said. “Within an hour the fire was under control and all exposures were protected from sustaining any damage.”

According to Sanchez, more than 34 units and over 100 firefighters assisted in the operation. He said “the National State Warning Point was notified to conduct an assessment as to what spill off may have occurred into the water.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A Boat Show Marked by Innovation

Vision Marine’s E-Motion™ electric powertrain technology was showcased alongside the boating industry’s newest and most exciting technological advancements in propulsions, electronics, and materials.

Among this year’s events’ stand outs were Mercury Marine’s highly anticipated V12 600-hp Verado Outboard, Honda’s (iST) Intelligent Shift & Throttle® models, SIONYX’s Nightwave advanced digital night vision technology, and Pursuit’s NMMA Innovation Award winner, the S 428 Sport Center Console/Walkaround Fishing Boat.

The most noticeable difference in this years’ boat show was the newly attained eco-friendly atmosphere.

Vision Presence at the Miami International Boat Show 2022

Vision Marine Technologies was stationed both on land and water.

At the sea isle marina docks , Vision Marine had a Starcraft 22 pontoon equipped with the E-Motion™ 180E Electric Powertrain, ready to hit the Miami Bay to showcase our technology to some of the boating industry’s largest OEMs and news outlets alike.

Inside the Miami Beach Convention Center, Vision Marine a twin application 180E electric powertrain rigged onto the Axopar 28 Brabus edition center console powerboat. Axopar 28 boats are typically used for day-cruising, saltwater-fishing and freshwater-fishing, which made it a perfect candidate to display our noiseless and clean technology.

Vision Marine also had a display located directly outside the convention center, in the Charged Pavillion, where the Volt 180, equipped with an E-Motion™ Outboard, was on full display.

Vision had the opportunity to meet with major media outlets and inform a wider audience

Vision Marine had the chance to meet with numerous media outlets, which gave a larger platform to inform consumers and OEMs about the powerful and disruptive technology the E-Motion Electric Outboard Powertrain has to offer. Esteemed publications, such as The Miami Herald, CGTN, Fox Sports, and many more, met with the Vision Marine’s team.

Our team was excited to meet with Fox Sports field reporter IndyCar racing legend and champion, Paul Tracy.

The Fox Sports segment was filmed for their first ever one hour special covering the Miami International Boat Show, which will debut on Sunday, March 6, 2022. The special will include on-site coverage, as well as interviews with industry leaders from the boating and marine industry. The special will be anchored by sports television play-by-play announcer Kevin Lee.

Getting The Global Vision Marine Team Together

Vision Marine’s booth also welcomed visits from collaborative partners. Periodically, and throughout the weekend, Vision Marine was enthusiastic to have boating industry legend, Pat Weismann, of Weismann Marine, stationed at the booth. Pat shared his enthusiasm for the design of the lower unit assemblies, currently being developed for the mid-section of Vision Marine’s E-Motion™ Outboard.

In addition, iconic F1 powerboat racing champion, Shaunn Torrente, spent some of his weekend with the Vision Marine team. Torrente walked around Vision’s booth and discussed his excitement for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout coming up in August of this year.

Vision Marine took the opportunity of the two boating industry luminaries and Vision collaborators, Pat Weismann and Shaun Torrente, being in attendance to make sure everyone had a chance to get together. All three Weismann, Torrente and Vision Marine shared an excitement for bringing the E-Motion™ to market in it’s most capable and dominant form.

Meet the VisionF 60

VisionF Yachts has introduced the VisionF 60, a catamaran expected to begin deliveries in spring 2024.

The boat is a fiberglass build with a nearly 33-foot beam and a draft just over 2 feet that is projected to have a top speed of 21 knots.

“Clients can choose between having the galley on main deck or in one of the hulls, and from multiple accommodation options, including four or three double cabins—including a spacious master stateroom—with two doubles and a kid’s cabin, or a guest cabin can be used a gym,” VisionF Yachts founder Coskun Bayraktar stated in a press release.

Relaxation spaces include the foredeck lounge and dinette, alfresco dining on the main deck and a flybridge with sunbathing space.

Standard power will be twin 360-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels for a projected top speed of about 21 knots. Solar panels can be added to the deckhouse for additional power generation.

When is construction expected to start on Hull No. 1 of the VisionF60?In early 2023. Look for owners to start taking deliveries in spring 2024.

Millions for DeSantis' boat people boondoggle could go to Haiti

COMMENTARY If Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis really wants to stop the waterborne migrant invasion he's girding for, he can steer the millions he's wasting on state patrols to Haiti development.

Could the 2024 invasion of Haitian boat people that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has so expensively and hysterically girded for finally be arriving on our state’s imperiled shores?

Not likely. But I do know this: DeSantis in the meantime could help prevent it from arriving. He could take the $20 million in taxpayer cash he’s wasting on his anti-immigration special forces base in the Keys — and redirect it to economic development in Haiti.

Yes, I’m aware that in the early hours Wednesday morning — when a boat carrying 117 Haitian migrants arrived off Key West — Florida's border defender-in-chief looked vindicated. The tsunami of illegal aliens he’d warned us was coming was coming.

The Great Pumpkin was here! And thank God DeSantis’ alien-intercepting green berets were around to confront it, right?

Reality check, however: that number, 117, is still below the monthly average of 126 migrants encountered in the Miami coastal sector this year — which itself is a low average for that sector.

What’s more: the Haitian vessel obviously got through that phalanx of airborne and seaborne commandos DeSantis has anointed to stop those Cuban, Haitian and other desperate emigres from descending on Florida’s beaches. And it appears that when the Haitians made it just 100 yards off land, it was actually Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents who took them into custody, not the Governor’s intrepid marines.

So, it turns out the whole state migrant interdiction show really is just a boondoggle driven by xenophobe politics.

But if that’s the case, hey, don’t worry, Governor. I have another idea for how to use those millions of dollars to keep Haitian migrants from getting on Keys-bound boats in the first place.

Since your trademark as a state governor is usurping constitutionally federal roles, you can now pivot from playing U.S. Coast Guard to playing USAID — and help improve life in Haiti itself.

To be fair, DeSantis’ original assumption — that Haiti’s gang-violence chaos and Cuba’s economic collapse would drive a new deluge of maritime migration to Florida this year — was hardly outlandish, even if his immigration enforcement theater is.

But that waterborne wave hasn’t materialized. So here’s another good assumption: Now that a multinational police support mission is finally arriving in Haiti to help subdue the gangs and stabilize the country, it looks even less likely Haitians will be sailing en masse to Florida soon.

And to help make sure of that, DeSantis can focus less on halting Haitian boats and more on creating Haitian jobs.

Child soldiers

Especially for an ocean of younger Haitians. If and when the powerful gangs that control much of Haiti are neutralized, the thousands of at-risk youths those criminal groups have recruited — as well as the tens if not hundreds of thousands or millions of at-risk youths they haven’t yet conscripted — will still be bereft of opportunity. Of hope.

In other words, they’ll still be drowning in the same conditions that made them such easy gang prey to begin with.

As I was recently reminded by Haitian architect and former education minister Leslie Voltaire, a member of Haiti’s new interim governing body, the Transitional Presidential Council:

“The gangs use them as child soldiers — the ones they send to burn schools, libraries, hospitals, to burn police stations. It will be a big problem to reintegrate those kids in society. There are too many Haitian kids who are lost.”

The fact is, $20 million can help reintegrate a lot of young Haitians. It can build schools in Port-au-Prince slums. It can buy soccer uniforms and equipment that keep kids off the streets. It can subsidize better nutrition for them and their struggling families. It can augment police salaries and resources for better security in their neighborhoods.

Just as important, it can seed the sort of businesses, employment — and futures — that have been all too scarce for all too many Haitians since the nation’s apocalyptic 2010 earthquake.

And the most important thing it can do as far as Florida is concerned: it can help keep Haitians in Haiti instead of in Key West.

It would, in short, do a hell of a lot more to keep Haitians from showing up in the Keys than DeSantis’ Florida SEALs do.

That, too, is good xenophobe politics, Governor.

Vision-impaired students take an interactive field trip on St. Augustine sailing yacht

Fourteen vision-impaired students at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind 's summer camp in St. Augustine recently spent a morning on sailing yachts, using touch and sounds to experience the joy of being at sea.

For the past four years, charter company St. Augustine Sailing has provided the school with free field trips . This year its yachts Wind Dancer and Far Niente each hosted seven campers and three companions.

"It’s a really special sail, not just for the kids, but for us too," Toste Muniz, the company's office manager, said. "One of the little girls hugged me so tightly … and told me she loved it so much she never wanted to leave. It’s really an indescribable feeling."

Crew members tied different knots, with the campers learning their shapes through touch, and used sounds to show how sails are adjusted. Capts. Chris De Hart and Dale Edgar talked about the wind and maneuvered the yachts so the youth felt the breeze on their faces. Each child was allowed "to take the helm and feel the pull of the water on the rudder," according to the company.

"It reminds us how important it is to utilize all the senses," De Hart said. "So much of sailing is being in tune to the sounds and feel of the boat, engine and weather."

In an educational session on the dock, Edgar used miniature boats with moveable sails. Each child was given a small block of wood with a cleat — a dock fixture that secures lines, ropes and cables — and piece of line to keep.

"It’s exciting and interactive. … So often our kids end up being passive passengers," summer camp director Jenny Enache said. "They’re not just learning about sailing, they’re gaining confidence."
