I was attracted to a very sweet little Compac 16 on the internet that sold before I got there. I've been actively searching for a small trailer able boat and like the looks of these little boats but - how do they sail? Are they Fun? Fast? Stable? Safe? Asking all Compac 16 owner to chime in. Thanks, Mike

Although I'm not a Compac 16 owner, I'll chime in anyhow. Before I got my little gem of a boat I was considering a Compac 16 as an option and I liked it. I have been around a few but never sailing on one. One thing I like to do is read about adventures in small sailboats. I read a few of people on Compac 16's, here are the links if your interested. A lot of times they will give hints of how the boat handles and sails in their journals. http://www.adventurevista.com/Cruising-Florida-2010.php http://www.valsimon.com/SailingtotheBahamas.htm

I just took my 1978 Com-Pac 16 out for the first time yesterday. She was quick, stable and fun. I had three adults and two kids on board with light winds and we were doing 6 mph. When we caught the wind gusts she listed over, but we were never close to flipping. I will probably have to order one of those owners manuals I keep hearing about, but a couple of morons who never sailed more than a Sunfish figured it out and had a blast.

I have just bought one, haven't taken it out yet still trying to gather a few things to get it ready to go out.

At The Helm

At The Helm is about sharing my sailing experiences and innovations I have tried over many years. I have owned many different classes from dinks, catamarans and settling on trailerable mono-hulls. Your sailing grounds are from lakes to the oceans and the capability of going solo or with family, or friends is possible. I believe if you can sail, you are ready for the unexpected. With that experience, there is very little in life that will stand in your way.

  • Description

Seller's Description

ComPac 16 sailboat for sale Nice clean package - Beautiful blue hull - Cabin sleeps 2 - Cockpit is 6 1/2 feet long - Roller furling jib - CDI flexible furler and jib cover are 1 year old - Tanbark main sail and sail cover - Bottom recently painted Title for boat and registration for trailer Also available is a 2.5 hp Suzuki 4 stroke outboard. Carburetor needs to be cleaned.

The Com Pac 16 is a popular sailboat produced by Hutchins Yachts. It was first built in 1974 and there were over 2,800 produced.

It is a small pocket cruiser sailboat. Com-pac 16s are 16 feet long with a beam of 6 feet. They have a shoal draft keel and draw 18 inches. They are generally thought of as being very seaworthy vessels. A Com-pac 16 displaces approximately 1100 pounds (499 kg) with 450 pounds (204 kg) of that as ballast in the keel. A relatively high ratio of keel weight to boat weight make the Com-pac resistant to heeling or overturning. The Com-pacs stability lends to its popularity. Although it has been out of production for approximately 10 years, there is an active online community for the Com-pac 16 (as well as other Com-pac models). Com-pac owners routinely share ideas, boat modifications, and experiences.

The Com-pac Yacht Owners Association website has over 600 active members.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Com-Pac 16

Basic specs..

The Com-Pac 16 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.46 - 0.56 meter (1.51 - 1.81 ft) dependent on the load.

The boat is typically equipped with an engine.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

Welcome to the Com-Pac Idea

Com-Pac Yachts began business in 1974 with our first boat, the Com-Pac 16. The idea then was to build a seaworthy yacht with a strong commitment to value. (For the full story, see Hutchins Company Profile .) Since then we have expanded our line and today we have twelve models, six cat-rigged sailboats, five sloop rigged sailboats and one power launch. The Com-Pac line covers a wide range of sizes from a 14' day sailor to the Com-Pac 27/3 cruising yacht . Each model, regardless of size, is built with the same exacting attention to detail and that same commitment to value.

All the convenience of our cat boats in a sloop-rigged daysailer with a 9' cockpit --> --> The Launch is a comfortable, multiuse yacht for a leisurely cruise for sightseeing, to dinner or, even, the occasional overnighter. --> -->

Our line of modern cat-rigged models (dubbed “A New Breed of Catboat”) offer the ultimate in trailer-sailing ease and rig set up. All come with the Mastendr™ quick-rig sailing system that allows for the boom, sail, and gaff to be left installed on the boat while the mast is folded or raised. The shrouds stay attached and the head stay disconnects with the flip of the pre-adjusted forestay self-locking lever. This system, unique to Com-Pac, adds an ease and convenience to trailer sailing that is really astounding. Your mast is up and you are ready to go in seconds, not minutes.

Our newest sloop-rigged models are the Eclipse SL , the Legacy , and the Legacy Sport daysailer. We consider these yachts “crossover” models. We have taken all of the convenience and features of our cat boat line and applied them to these new exciting sloops. Features include the Mastendr™ (Eclipse), Boomtendr™ (Legacy & Sport), keel centerboard hull configuration and low riding trailers for ease of launching and retrieval.

Com-Pac Horizon Day Cat

  • See the Horizon Day Cat

The three traditionally rigged sloops ( 23/IV , 23 Pilothouse , and 27/3 ) have full masthead, eight stay rigs and fixed keels. As such they can be sailed in areas and conditions that lesser sloops would be wise to avoid. Many of our sloops have long cruises to their credit. Coastal cruising, Gulf of Mexico crossings, and long term Bahamas cruises are a few that are recorded. The 23/IV and 23 Pilothouse are trailerable but they are still full fledged cruising yachts. We did not compromise sea-worthiness or comfort. When the 23/IV or 23 Pilothouse is fitted with the available custom trailer, they can easily be taken over the road for vacation or winter storage.

Cp35 Salon

  • See the Com-Pac 35

The new launch with the available electric propulsion is perfect for an evening of touring the harbor, canals and waterways or even more varied areas of interest with the standard 2 cylinder diesel engine.

All of our models come with an extraordinary list of amenities and standard equipment. From the 14' Picnic Cat to the 27' cruiser, you will find everything you need for that day sail, day cruise, weekend getaway or extended cruise.

If you are looking for something other than an “off the shelf” yacht, then Com-Pac is for you. Many builders today do not give you any more choices than cushion fabric and canvas colors. Whether your yacht is 14' or 27', nowhere else will you find the freedom of involvement and creativity you will find by sitting down with us and discussing your dream yacht. Our answer to 95% of requests for personalization is “we can do that.”

Nick Mavar, Fisherman and ‘Deadliest Catch’ Star, Dies at 59

Mr. Mavar, who ran a fishing operation in Alaska, starred in the reality television show for 16 years and captained his own boat.

A man in an orange parka and trousers leans against a pile of snow that is about as high as his shoulder. The word “Northwestern” can be seen behind him.

By John Yoon

Nick Mavar, a commercial salmon fisherman known for his tenacity and resourcefulness who was also a deckhand on the Discovery Channel’s extreme fishing reality show “Deadliest Catch,” died on Thursday at a hospital in King Salmon, Alaska. He was 59.

His death was confirmed by his wife, Julie Mavar. His nephew Jake Anderson said that Mr. Mavar had a heart attack on Thursday while on a ladder at a boatyard in Naknek, Alaska, where he ran his fishing operation, and fell onto a dry dock.

The Bristol Bay Borough Police Department in Naknek confirmed that Mr. Mavar had died but declined to share more details.

“Deadliest Catch,” which follows crab fishermen on their strenuous and sometimes brutal job off the Alaskan coast, is one of the top-rated programs on basic cable, drawing millions of viewers.

The show premiered in 2005, and Mr. Mavar appeared in 98 episodes, working on a fishing boat called the F/V Northwestern until 2021.

He left the show while filming an expedition in 2020 after his appendix ruptured, revealing a cancerous tumor, Mr. Anderson said.

Mr. Mavar was also injured while shooting an episode in 2011, when a large hook came loose during a storm and struck him in the face, breaking his nose.

In the fishing community, Mr. Mavar was known for overcoming adversities, including the cancer and an earlier heart attack, said Mr. Anderson, who appeared on “Deadliest Catch” while crabbing in Bristol Bay with Mr. Mavar and other members of his family.

Nickola Mavar Jr. was born on Oct. 21, 1964, in San Pedro, Calif., to Nickola Mavar Sr. and Maureen (Whelan) Mavar.

He grew up in a fishing family, and his father was a fisherman who emigrated from Croatia in 1959. While a mechanical engineering student in California, the elder Mr. Mavar at first fished part time until becoming a commercial fisherman, according to an interview with an oral history program at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.

When the younger Mr. Mavar got his own start in fishing in the early 1990s, the cost of obtaining a permit and running a fishery meant he could not afford a fully functioning boat, Mr. Anderson said.

Mr. Mavar, lacking dish soap and sponges, often washed dishes with Windex, slept in trash bags to keep dry in a flooded boat, and reeled up the net by hand because of broken hydraulics, Mr. Anderson said.

“You could give the guy a tin pail, and he could make it catch fish,” he said. “You could give him a bicycle, and he could make it float.”

One of Mr. Mavar’s boats, named Miss Colleen after his sister, was purchased from his father when he retired, Mr. Anderson said. Soon, Mr. Mavar ran a fishery in Alaska, then took a job working for a boat owner, Sig Hansen, on the Northwestern, which brought him to the show.

“The passing of Nick Mavar spread through the fishing community like wildfire,” Mr. Hansen wrote on social media , adding that Mr. Mavar had worked on his family boat for more than 25 years and was a good friend.

After leaving the Northwestern, Mr. Mavar captained his own salmon boat in Bristol Bay and golfed frequently with Ms. Mavar, whom he married in 2021, Mr. Anderson said.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Mavar is survived by his father; two children from a previous marriage, Myles and Emme Mavar; a stepdaughter, Jensen Weynands; two brothers, Brian and John; and a sister, Colleen.

Throughout nearly two decades on television, Mr. Anderson said, Mr. Mavar did not care much about the fame that came from being on the show.

“He was a fisherman through and through,” Mr. Anderson said, “and the camera was something that was just there.”

  11. 1984 Com-pac 16

  12. Review of Com-Pac 16

Keel. The Com-Pac 16 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.46 - 0.56 meter (1.51 - 1.81 ft) dependent on the load.

  13. Buying a Compac 16

They are right up there with a Cape Dory Typhoon in my opinion. I almost bought a Compac 16 a few years ago but felt negative vibes from the wife about buying any new (at least to me) boat so I didn't. A year later I figured better to ask for forgiveness than permission and bought a Helson 22.
