Perfect autumn conditions greeted the 10 boats that made up the fleet in the fifth annual X-Yachts regatta held on Sydney Harbour last weekend

Perfect autumn conditions greeted the 10 boats that made up the fleet in the fifth annual X-Yachts regatta held on Sydney Harbour last weekend. Ranging from 33 to 44ft in size the handicap fleet raced a windward/leeward course from Clifton Gardens to Rose Bay.

Defending champion and winner for the last two years, Howard De Torres skippering Nips ‘n Tux, returned from a successful Sydney to Mooloolaba race to compete in the event. De Torres has also taken out the CYCA’s Bluewater Point score for IMS, Cape Byron Series for IRC and Tasman Performance Series for PHS for the 03/04 season.

The fleet raced in a light easterly breezed that topped 12kts during the day’s racing. A ship heading out the harbour split the fleet in the first start and Sextant steered by new owner Denis Doyle took advantage of the situation to put some distance on the rest of the fleet who let the ship pass. ‘We had a fantastic regatta and were pleasantly surprised at the boat’s performance, to be able to beat the defending champion Howard De Torres was a thrill as well’ commented Doyle. ‘We plan to compete in the BMW Winter Series then the Sydney to Gold Coast race and hopefully the Gosford to Lord Howe and Rolex Sydney to Hobart races later this year.’

Two new yachts to the fleet, the X43s have had positive results with Great Xpectations skippered by Rod Wills finishing third in IRC class A in the Coffs Harbour Series earlier this year. White Satin owned by Bill and Nevine Neill won the CYCA’s Autumn SOPS series on IRC and PHS with North South Yachting’s Andrew Parkes onboard for the X Yacht regatta and the Autumn series.

X-Knox was skippered by Tony Kirby from North South Yachting in the first race then race two saw ‘TK’ venture forward to the bow with Bob Mulkearns from North South Yachting steering for the second race.

Neil Edwards steering his X 332 Xanthe, the smallest boat in the fleet, placed fifth in the overall placing’s. Edwards will be trading up to a Bavaria 44 in the next month.

Steering his X 442 Toy Box, the largest boat in the fleet, Ian Box is a regular on Sydney harbour during the year and is also a supporter of the Whitsundays racing. Box, the Commodore of Middle Harbour Yacht Club finished third overall after a second and third in the series. He also won the Line Honours trophy

Xr series : X-Yachts announces new model for regatta sailors

Jochen Rieker

 ·  11.08.2023

Long waterline, long bowsprit and, as always, three stripes above the waterline: the Xr is intended to be sporty, but not radical

Little can be seen from the first drawings. In fact, the construction phase is only just beginning in these weeks. However, the aim is clear and unambiguous: "Our top priority is to build a winning boat," Nielsen told YACHT.

With the first model in the new Xr series, which will probably be followed by a second, most likely smaller one, X-Yachts is continuing the history of the Haderslev shipyard. The early X-79 and X-99 were already successful regatta yachts; later came very fast one-tonne boats, the IMX series in the 90s and noughties and finally the X-35 and X-41, the Danes' youngest racer-cruisers to date.

Recently, however, little has been heard or seen in the segment that once characterised the success and reputation of the Scandinavian boat builders. The reason for this was the reorganisation of the brand, which was accompanied by an economic turnaround.

Several regatta sailors migrated from X-Yachts

Under the leadership of Kræn B. Nielsen and with Ib Kunøe as a partner, the shipyard, which had been operating close to the waterline financially for some time, found its way back onto the road to success, which was partly due to the good demand for the yachts of the so-called Xpure line (X 4.0 to 5.6), which were more orientated towards fast cruising. This went hand in hand with the thinning out of the sporty Xp series.

This created space and, to a certain extent, a need in the portfolio to demonstrate its own capabilities again - which was emphasised by the guest appearance at the ORC World Championship. Enquiries from committed dealers and owners also prompted the management team to take action. A number of them have since moved on to other brands, including such a loyal and enthusiastic, yet demanding X-Yachts supporter as Marc Lichte. The head of design at Audi is currently sailing a new build from J-Boats, but is still emotionally attached to the Danes and is said to have contributed to the fact that X is now developing a racer/cruiser again.

The positioning and structure chosen by the Danes is interesting. The 42 to 44-foot boat is deliberately not intended to be a one-design, unlike the new ClubSwan 43, which will debut next year. "We want to be able to continuously develop the Xr further," said CEO Nielsen.

New Xr series should be able to win its class at the ORC Worlds

To this end, he is building up a network of experts to support and drive this development. These include North Sails, for example, but also Max Gurgel as a clever expert in rating and performance optimisation. The Danes are already in talks with other high-calibre names on the regatta scene. They want to attack with two teams that are supported by the shipyard: one in Northern Europe and one in the Mediterranean, which has so far been the domain of Grand Soleil and Italia Yachts.

Despite its focus on success, the Xr series will not be an uncompromising racer, but a "dual-purpose design", as the shipyard boss emphasises. Plug-in modules are planned for the interior, which can be quickly removed when sailing around the tonnes. This improves marketability after several years of racing, says Nielsen.

In one respect, however, the claim remains unshakeable: Success. "The new Xr should be able to win its class at the ORC Worlds," he says. So it will be interesting to see.

The proven superb performance of those yachts combined with the full feature uncompromised setup and the professional maintenance and service make sure that all the hassle is taken care of and that leaves you to focus on doing what you love best – racing hard with your team mates and chasing the fun and that podium finish.

Most major events of the Med are served including Rolex Middle Sea Race, Aegean 600 and Palma Vela.  Our team will be close to you on all steps from small details of boat preparation, logistics before the event, support during the race and yacht reset after the event.

Embrace the X-difference

Proven racing results, unbeatable sail performance.

A highly-optimised X-Yachts hull shape offers exemplary performance in a very different way compared to any other fast sailing boat. Key elements of the design include reduced upright beam and wetted surface area, increased overall waterline, exceptional stiffness and high stability. This stability is achieved with a high ballast ratio, which is based on the additional weight in the bulb keel in combination with the lightweight hull structure thanks to epoxy infusion build processes and the well thought weight distribution of all equipment on board. Innovative set of deck and rig features, such as carbon bowsprit to set asymmetrics, rod rigging and the safety of the keel structural frame come to compose what we call the X-factor.

X-Yachts has a long history of building race winning designs. They retain all the qualities of a yacht ready to compete at races with all serious rivals.

All models boast an unparalleled record in international racing results. A good recent example is the 2019 Rolex Middle Sea Race with 4 Xp44s in the top11 boats (overall IRC results).

Uncompromised performance at all angles of sailing and the whole spectrum of wind conditions, is at the heart of the design for all X-Yachts. This performance comes in a very forgiving way, without expensive penalties on IRC/ORC rating, combining simplicity of handling with joy of sailing fast. All yachts come with superb race sail wardrobes for both offshore and inshore racing. The sailplan is engineered, designed and executed by Quantum Sails and their well-known sail designer Pat Tahtatzis. Workmanship throughout is nothing less than exquisite.

Portrait of a building site / X-Yachts, sailboats designed for racing or fast cruising

x yachts regatta

Faithful to Scandinavian principles, the Danish shipyard X-Yachts has been building fast and elegant yachts for over 40 years. Here is a look back at the history and evolution of the famous Danish monohulls.

Maxime Leriche

Beginning in the family barn

In 1979, the Jeppesen brothers, Lars and Niels, set out to build sailboats on the Danish peninsula. Based in Haderslev, the two brothers were not professionals in the shipbuilding industry, and had no funds to invest in the creation of a shipyard .

But the siblings' perseverance , combined with a salutary meeting with Birgen Hansen, a famous shipbuilder, enabled them to found one of the most renowned shipyards in Denmark .

Les premiers bord du X-79

The first model launched by the Danish trio is the X-79, a keelboat of almost 8 meters. Designed for racing, or very short cruising, the X-79 won the Danish Sjælland Rundt and the famous Swedish Tjørn Rundt, which at the time was the largest Scandinavian regatta with more than 2,000 boats competing.

x yachts regatta

These victories brought the X-79 a good reputation and nearly 500 units were built

Le X-102

The X-102, based on the same specifications as its little brother, was launched later. With this recognition, the shipyard was named X-Yachts in 1984.

X-99: the bestseller

Le X-99

Launched in 1985, the X-99 benefited from the nascent reputation of the Danish shipyard and a hundred units were pre-ordered even before the launch of the first model in the series. The site of Haderslev must be enlarged to answer the new needs. The specifications of the X-99 is to carry out a powerful livable sailing ship, which will be able to fill the regatta sailors while bringing a suitable interior volume. The productive capacities of the shipyard being still limited, the X-99 is proposed only in one version.

x yachts regatta

This 10-meter keelboat, which will be produced in 605 units, will confirm its status as a leader in the fast sailing boat market in Europe, but also in the United States and Asia.

Thanks to this new success, X-Yachts established itself at the end of the 80's as an international reference in the competitive racing-cruise market.

A turn towards cruising, without denying the regatta

With their expertise in building fast sailboats, the Danish trio decided to create a new range dedicated to cruising, but without denying their racing DNA. In 1987, X-Yachts launched a cruising version of the X-452, which was the first non-racing model.

Le X-512, premier voilier de plus de 50 pieds du chantier

In the 90's, the shipyard divided its production between series based on cruising and racing yachts , but also prototypes. It thus specialized in the manufacture of fast, well-built sailboats from 30 to 73 feet. The design office manages to follow the complex evolutions of the IOR, IMS, IRC or ORC gauges, in order to guarantee a high level of competitiveness to its sailboats.

L'IMX 40

In 2000, the shipyard launched the IMX 40, which won numerous victories in IRC and IMS. It will be followed by the IMX 45, which will win many victories, both offshore and inshore.

Le X-35 One Design

In 2007, the shipyard launched a One Design X-35, a one-design produced in more than 200 units and which is now highly sought after on the second-hand market.

In 2009, X-Yachts launched the XCruising range, giving its yachts a larger interior volume, while maintaining very good performance under sail .

A neat construction

Le chantier X-Yachts

The hull and deck of the "X" are constructed of vacuum infused sandwiches. The use of epoxy resin and Corecell foam, as well as an oven passage, confer a high quality of manufacturing. Assembled on a galvanized steel frame, this process ensures excellent rigidity while guaranteeing a respected weight estimate. Fittings and hardware are chosen from top of the range suppliers. Faithful to its Scandinavian origins, X-Yachts takes meticulous care in the choice and installation of the woodwork.

Every detail of the manufacturing process is carefully considered to obtain an optimal final result.

A range of race-cruise

In 40 years of activity, the X-Yachts shipyard has launched nearly 6000 units. The shipyard builds an average of one hundred units per year, divided into 3 ranges from 40 to 56 feet: XCruising, XRange and XPerformance.

In 2008, the Danish Ib Kunøe bought the shares of Lars and Birger. Niels Jeppesen will remain with the company and will continue to head the architecture and design department.

Le X-Power 33C

In 2021, the shipyard has also given in to market pressure by embarking on the production of a power boat, the X-Power 33C, taking up the quality of manufacture for which the Danish shipyard is renowned.

X-Yachts in the 1980s-90s was the shipyard that fully introduced the concept of cruising-regatta boats. exploitable on family vacations, but authentically successful between buoys or on the high seas. A concept that has since been taken up by many other shipyards and has become a “classic” of modern boats.

XR

The Danish shipyard, however, has changed course in the last 10 years, heading more sharply toward cruising with the XC range first, also with the new XC 47 for blue water sailing, and then with that Pure X, until this year when management decided to go back to basics. It will be called XR and will be presented at BOOT Dusseldorf 2025, the new model also dedicated to racing by X-Yachts.

XR – What X-Yachts’ return to racing will be like.

Racing is an integral part of the X-Yachts DNA and the shipyard has a long history starting from its inception with the first model the X-79 that won regattas around the world.

The length of the hull will be 12.74 m , have not been disclosed . For the creation of the new XR X-Yachts will bring to bear all the expertise gained in previous models, with a Design Team that will draw on leading figures in the racing world such as Bouwe Bekking, Jesper Radich, North Sails, C-Performance and Max Gürgel, with the goal of creating the fastest racing boat in its class.

The first leaked render gives a glimpse of an aesthetically very distinctive first, inverted with a shape that winks at the open world, and there is also a glimpse of a slight aft knee/edge that seems to evoke what was done on the old Xp 33.

Falmouth Classics regatta: Boat sinks with sailors on board as race hit by strong winds

  • West Country
  • Tuesday 18 June 2024 at 10:35am

x yachts regatta

An historic boat ended up on the seabed after high winds hit vessels competing in the Falmouth Classics regatta on Friday 14 June.

The Falmouth Working Boat named Victory was blown over by a gust, quickly taking on water and sinking to the bottom.

It was not the only vessel to get into trouble that day - another capsized and one lost its mast.

Victory's owner, David Carne, described the moment he realised the conditions had got the better of him.

He said: “I thought we’d go over to the most sheltered side of the harbour underneath Trefusis.

"I was being very cautious but the wind was so strong, as the boat went over another gust hit us and being an open boat, we sank.

"It was on the bottom within 15 seconds, fortuitously we sank in a nice soft, shallow bottomed place."

David and his four crew members were rescued by the Falmouth Classics safety boat.

He co-founded the regatta in 1987 and said this wouldn't put him off sailing.

"W orse things happen in life, that sort of thing doesn’t phase me at all," he explained.

David added that he plans to get Victory back to sailing again in the coming days, with a view to competing in the Falmouth Classics next year.

HM Coastguard confirmed that it received reports of three vessels in difficulty off Falmouth at around 3pm on Friday 14 June.

The first was a seven-metre sailing yacht that had "de-masted" at 2.51pm. It was towed to shore by a race support vessel.

At 3.14pm the call came in about Victory. She had capsized and sunk with people in the water.

Then at 3:15pm another sailing vessel capsized leaving two people in the water. All were recovered and required no further medical assistance.

It was a team effort to help those in need, Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, Falmouth RNLI lifeboats, race support vessels, local vessels in the area and an HM Coastguard helicopter were all sent.

On Sunday, Seawide Services recovered Victory with a team of five divers and a number of specialist recovery boats.

Royal Expert Says Meghan Markle Tried to Upstage Kate Middleton Amid Return

Conservatives, liberals clash over biden's 'freezing' moment with obama, president biden 'freezing' onstage with barack obama ... sparks heated debate.

President Biden 's age is once again a big talking point -- for his haters and his supporters -- after the Commander-in-Chief's awkward, and perhaps frozen, moment onstage during his L.A. fundraiser.

The prez was leaving the stage Saturday night with former President Barack Obama by his side, and Biden's detractors say his exit dragged on because he froze up ... forcing Obama to lead his once-vice president off the stage.

That’s a wrap on record-setting Democratic fundraiser for Joe Biden’s reelection campaign (netting $28M). Former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden offer final waves to Peacock Theater crowd as Obama then grabs Biden’s hand to lead him offstage following 40-minute… pic.twitter.com/xbE2jf3jdz — Chris Gardner (@chrissgardner) June 16, 2024 @chrissgardner

Biden, who had just wrapped up a 45-minute chat with Jimmy Kimmel and Obama at the Peacock Theater, was waving to the crowd, but seemed to have a blank stare ... until Obama intervened.

The moment has already gone viral ... with conservatives and liberals both sharing their passionate takes on social media.

Donald Trump 's supporters feel confident this is a sign Biden is not equipped for reelection, with one fan declaring on X ... "Everyone promoting Joe Biden for another term is committing elder abuse, not to mention the abuse to our country."

Another chimed in with ... "Biden is not fit to serve. He belongs in a rest-home."

Liberals, on the other hand, have come to the defense of 46 -- calling out the fact Trump has needed assistance on the campaign trail, too.

One Biden supporter added ... "Don't believe what you see, Biden is at the top of his game."
