2023 Boat of the Year: Best Cruising Multihull

  • By CW Editorial Team
  • December 7, 2022

The trend toward cruising multihulls continues unabated, and perhaps has even come full circle. The popularity of boats with more than one hull, especially catamarans , is more evident with each passing year in charter fleets, on boat-show docks, and in far-flung anchorages the world over. The multihull genie is out of the bottle, and there’s no evidence it will ever return. That reality was once again underlined in the 2023 Boat of the Year trials , where the Cruising Multihull class, with five legitimate contenders, was certainly among the strongest categories. Particularly notable this year was the dominance of French builders, which makes sense because the country has been the leading proponent of production-built multihulls from the beginning. It’s fitting that one of those pioneering firms topped the field for 2023: Well done, Fountaine Pajot.

Winner: Fountaine Pajot, Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

Tanna 47

This category was stacked with previous winners. In fact, every builder in the class had earned a BOTY victory in earlier editions of the event. But in both the dockside inspections and under sail, the Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47 rang a bell for our panelists.

“I believe this is my favorite Fountaine Pajot model of all time,” judge Herb McCormick says. “The size and dimensions are ideal: It’s a big cat but not overwhelming. A big reason is the helm station, with dedicated pods for driving, and the sailhandling. And, holy cow, it really sailed well.”

Judge Mark Pillsbury also appreciates the smart deck layout, as well as the corresponding systems: “With plenty of solar panels, a watermaker and more-than-ample refrigeration space, the Tanna 47 was set up really well for cruising and living aboard. On a beam reach in 13 knots of breeze, we scooted along at 7 to 8 knots, and I liked the setup of the helm, with the wheel being separated slightly from the winches. The boat was easy to sail solo, but there was room for the crew to jump in and help when they wanted to.”

Finalist: Balance Catamarans, Balance 442

Balance 442

The lone South African cat entry for 2023, the Balance 442 continued the excellence we’ve come to expect from the builder, and is a worthy successor to the company’s 482 , which was named Best Performance Catamaran for 2022 .

Pillsbury offers this summation: “Many of today’s popular catamarans are built to appeal to a wide audience composed of private owners and charter companies. Phil Berman and the team at Balance take a different approach, by building boats for experienced owners who plan to live aboard and go places. That translates into seakindliness, solid sailing performance, and comfortable accommodations that will keep a crew rested and ready at anchor or underway. Personal favorites: the visibility from the raised helm station, and the farm-kitchen-style deep sink and dish-drying racks in the galley. Nice touches.”

Finalist: Groupe Beneteau, Lagoon 55

Lagoon 55

This rangy cat will find plenty of happy sailors in private ownership and on charter vacations. Judge Ed Sherman says that the performance under power jumped out: “A record-setter for its motoring capabilities this year at 8.9 knots at 2,000 rpm and 9.4 knots at 2,500 rpm. Quiet too. In both cases, our decibel tests came in at less than 70.”

The sailing characteristics impress Pillsbury: “The Lagoon 55 is a big boat, probably close to the limit of what can be handled by a family or crew of friends off on a charter vacation. But the designers and builder have done a good job of setting up a helm station on the flybridge that’s workable for a shorthanded crew. All lines lead to winches near the wheel, and an autopilot and bow thruster provide extra hands when it comes time to maneuver. With multiple interior layouts, the 55 can be configured to fit the needs of a wide variety of owners.”

Finalist: Nautitech Catamarans, Nautitech 44 Open

Nautitech 44 Open

With its twin wheels situated aft and outboard, the peppy Nautitech 44 Open is thrilling to drive, with its quickness and performance. “I always say that you need daggerboards to have truly great sailing on a cat, but this sweet 44-footer, with its fixed keels, certainly disproved that opinion,” McCormick says. “It really zipped along and was a blast to steer.”

Pillsbury is of the same mind: “After our sail aboard the Nautitech, I jotted down ‘sporty’ in my notes. The helm seats, set outboard and aft on each of the cat’s hulls, kept me connected with the water rushing by, and a versatile sail plan that includes a self-tacking jib, screecher and spinnaker gave us options to keep boatspeeds in the high single digits—and higher in the puffs—on all points of sail.”

Finalist: Neel Trimarans, Neel 43

Neel 43

The three-hull outlier in our category of mostly cats, the Neel 43 presents a real alternative for those who want the speeds and space that a multihull can deliver. “This boat is truly different,” Sherman says. “It’s slippery through the water, either sailing or under engine power. System access in the center hull is wonderful and well done too. With a single 50 hp Volvo Penta saildrive, we measured 8.2 knots at only 2,200 rpm and 8.4 knots at 2,700 rpm.”

Pillsbury enjoyed the entire Neel experience, and says: “Neel’s creator, Eric Bruneel, described the boat as a fast cruiser, and by that he meant an owner on passage could expect to sail in the 9- to 10-knot range, routinely enjoying 200-plus-mile days. After my turn on the wheel, I sneaked inside to check out the view from the owner’s cabin, nestled atop the starboard hull. I could have stayed all afternoon.”

Last Updated on November 3, 2023 by Boatsetter Team

Catamarans have taken the boating world by storm, becoming the fastest-growing segment, with both sail and power cats dominating the market. Some of the best catamarans have been launched in the past 12 months! Let us introduce you to five power catamarans and five sail multihulls, and then let us get you on the water with one! Here are the ten best catamarans for 2023 :

  • Leopard 40 PC
  • Aquila 42 PC
  • HammerCat 45

Power Catamarans:

World cat 260 ccx.

world-cat-260cc-x-18

The sixth model in the builder’s center console line , the World Cat 260 CCX , is compact but packed with features, including a wraparound U-lounge for relaxing or casting, a 30-gallon live well, a 120-quart insulated fish box and twin 200-hp outboards that draw on 180 gallons of fuel. This is a small but serious fishing machine.

Four Winns TH36

Four Winns TH36

The new Four Winns TH36 is the first outboard-powered catamaran introduced by the builder. The dual console design has a walkthrough windshield and room for 15 or more guests. Power is provided by twin 300-hp outboards upgradeable to 350s, making this runabout speedy and fun.

Leopard 40 PC

Leopard 40 PC

Joining her 46- and 53-foot siblings, the new Leopard 40 PC is a couple’s cruiser with many of the same features as the two larger models but on a much smaller (and for some, more approachable) platform. Engine packages range from 250 hp to 370 hp, and a top speed of 20 knots is expected.

Aquila 42 PC

Aquila 42 PC

The new 42 falls in the middle of the Aquila range and offers two staterooms, multiple sunbeds, a utility cabin , and numerous layout configuration options. She has engines from Volvo Penta and a spacious flybridge with steps that lead directly down to the foredeck for easy maneuvering.

HammerCat 45

HammerCat 45

The new HammerCat 45 is versatile and can work as a sportfish platform, a dive boat, a day cruiser, or a superyacht tender. This center console has a hardtop and a Carolina bow and is built in epoxy and carbon fiber to keep weight down and performance up. Expect a 55- knot top end and a 30-knot cruise depending on the engine package selected.

Sailing Catamarans:

Fountaine pajot tanna 47.

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47

This French-built sailing cruiser has space in spades. The new FP Tanna 47 is based on (and shares a hull design with) her predecessor, the Saona 47, but clever tweaks have made this a whole new boat. The cabin house and deck have been revamped, the flybridge is 40% larger, the salon/ galley has gained storage options, and the helm is more ergonomic than before.

Bali 4.4

Video Source: bali-catamarans.com

Bali has captured the hearts of sailors who love lots of living space, large household-style appliances, and simplicity. Bali cats are unique for their combination salon/ cockpit layout, and the 4.4 joins her siblings in this groundbreaking design. With the touch of a button, a “garage door” lifts, connecting the indoors with the outdoors with minimum redundancy in living arrangements.

balance 442

Fast and packed with proven cruising features, the Balance 442 is the little sister to last year’s 482. Perfectly sized for couples, this boat was designed for distance cruisers by distance cruisers. There’s even an option for a large solar array to make living at anchor easy and just about carbon neutral.

Lagoon 55

French catamaran builder, Lagoon, has introduced a new VPLP-designed cruising cat that you can test in charter soon. The Lagoon 55 slots just above the newly introduced 51and are offered as a large and comfortable flybridge model with up to six cabins to accommodate an overnight crowd.

Minicat 310

Minicat 310

Not all cats are of the large, expensive fiberglass variety. An affordable multihull can be had in Europe’s Minicat 310 Sport, an inflatable beach cat weighing only 77 pounds and packing down into a single bag. This cat has sophisticated big boat features like roller furling, a fully battened mainsail, keels, and an attachment for a small outboard.

2023 Sail Buyer's Guide

This category is barely any livelier than the previous one – though that’s not difficult! In addition to the announcement of the Palma 30 Grand Voyageur (classified in the Forever Green category) and the Ventio, we note the arrival of the very promising Bali Catsmart, which is a hit in terms of sales off plan. We are losing the smaller Dazcat and the Corsair 37... Between 30 and 40 feet, cruising catamarans rub shoulders with coastal rally-raid trimarans, but there’s also some really fast boats. Whichever your choice, these multihulls remain on a human scale, easy to handle and easy to maintain.

On course for semi-offshore cruising

course catamaran 2023

The Tricat 30 offers all the comfort a crew of up to 6 could wish for, thanks to a very comfortable central hull - panoramic saloon - and a vast cockpit. Powerful, the Tricat 30 remains easy to handle for the whole family or on your own. In port, it folds easily while afloat to limit its beam to 11’6” (3.50 m). Its structural stiffness allows it to have exceptional speed potential: the 30 has already been caught at over 20 knots. And you’ll be reaching these speeds all the more easily as the mainsail is now bigger thanks to a new rig. At least ten Tricat 30s have been delivered since 2016. An excellent platform for semi-offshore cruising.

Builder: Tricat Length: 30’2”/35’9” (9.2/10.9 m) Beam: 11’6”/23’ (3.5/7 m) Light displacement: 5,180 lbs (2,35 t) Draft: 19”/5’3” (0.48/1.6 m) Mainsail: 425/484 sq ft (39.5/45 m²) Jib: 237/264 sq ft (22/24.5 m²) Engine: 10/15 HP outboard Price: € 174,833 ex-tax

CORSAIR 970

The dna of the corsair 31 is still plain to see….

course catamaran 2023

The Corsair 970 – also known as the Cruze 970 - took over from the Corsair 31 more ten years ago now. Fans of folding trimarans know how much the Corsair 31 left its mark on people’s minds. With more than 300 examples built, it is one of the yard’s best-sellers. The Corsair 970 didn’t take any unnecessary risks: it was really an evolution of the Corsair 31, but with greater comfort on board, more in line with the Corsair 37. On board the 970, there’s about 15% more space than on the 31 and notably, much better headroom, as you can now stand upright in the saloon... But this comfort in no way hinders the seakeeping qualities of the Cruze 970, which remains a true Corsair trimaran. The Sport, and especially the Carbon, versions are obviously higher performing. It goes without saying that the 970 is foldable, using the system so highly prized by the yard.

Builder: Corsair Marine Construction: glass/polyester/PVC sandwich Length: 31’10” (9.7 m) Beam: 22’7”/8’4” (6.88/2.55 m) Light displacement: 4,800 lbs (2,18 t) Draft: 18”/6’11” (0.45/2.1 m) Mainsail: 382/452 sq ft (35.5/42 m²) Genoa: 188/247 sq ft (17.5/23 m²) Spi: 872/925 sq ft (81/86 m²) Engine: 10 to 15 HP outboard

DRAGONFLY 32

Long live those wave-piercing floats.

course catamaran 2023

The first-generation Dragonfly 32 marked the history of Quorning Boats with more than 50 examples built. The Evolution replaced the Supreme version in 2019, with 20% larger floats and a more powerful rig. The stretched underwater hulls of the floats, the higher volume and the inverted bows are a real plus with a cross-sea or for sporty sailing. Admittedly, at the same price, the Dragonfly 32 Evo offers a third of the living space of an honest 40-foot catamaran, but what are we looking for when we choose this boat? A ...

“We had an amazing experience! We came away with way more knowledge and excitement to learn. Mike and I really only took this course because it was important to my brother-in-law who had a passion to learn and we wanted to spend time together. We rented the 4600 catamaran right after our courses which will allow us to put all this great information to work.” Heather and Mike Nichols – Selana Beach, CA Read more testimonials here

As part of our review of the sailing season last year, we have also been looking at two-hulled boats. Now, we bring you a list of the most popular catamarans in 2023. So, which ones resonated with sailors, what did they particularly like and which destinations can you find them? Top catamarans in Europe you'll love

We'll start with the most accessible destinations, where you can go for a sailing adventure by car, train or direct flight from most major European capitals. Which catamarans are among the most popular for cruising Europe's waters?

STUDENT FAQ and SUPPORT (no login required - your answer will be emailed to you)

What is the different between the catamaran endorsement and catamaran qualification print.

Modified on: Tue, 12 Sep, 2023 at 10:25 PM

You can gain a  Catamaran Qualification by

(i) Completing the NauticEd  Catamaran Sailing Confidence course online

(ii) logging at least 3 days as skipper or 7 days as crew on a 38 ft (11.5m) or greater sized catamaran

(iii)  being Bareboat Charter Master Rank with level III experience

You can gain a  Catamaran Endorsement by

(ii) successfully complete an on-the-water half day (4-5 hours) Catamaran Endorsement assessment on a 38 ft (11.5m) or greater sized catamaran with a NauticEd Assessor.

(iii)  being Bareboat Charter Master Rank with level III experience

The difference is that a Qualification means you have enough experience to automatically qualify without an on-the-water assessment whereas an  Endorsement means that you have been assessed on-the-water as to your competence and successfully passed. The endorsement is considered of higher value because of proven competence.

2022 Year in Review & what’s ahead in 2023

The ball dropped on 2022 and with that, we ring in 2023. (Did you know? NYC’s New Year’s Eve time ball has a maritime beginning!  Read More>> ). We say it every year: “Where did the time go”? Seems like yesterday that we changed our calendars for a new year! The CG team has done so much in the last two years, and it all has culminated in some amazing accomplishments for our team. As we counted down to midnight, we mused on what happened in 2022 from the beautiful shores of Belize. Yes, we quietly “disappeared” for a few days to simply relax, regroup, and set our goals for the upcoming year from  this second biggest barrier reef in the world .  So, we look back at 2022 with some awe and nostalgia, while looking optimistically into the future towards 2023. Happy New Year!

  •  Ocean Multihulls as part of Catamaran Guru Group, now has Bali Catamaran dealerships for the Caribbean, Texas and USA for charter management
  • Catamaran Guru is exclusive dealer for Catana in the USA
  • We are an RYA accredited sailing school facility
  • We expanded our footprint in the charter management community and invited boutique charter companies to join us in our quest to provide superior owner experiences
  • We launched “The Yacht Exchange” exclusively for charter yacht owners worldwide
  • We hosted our 4th annual Catamaran Rendezvous in the Bahamas

our BOutique Charter Management Partners

CG forms alliances with boutique charter companies worldwide

2022 was again a bumper year for Catamaran Guru in Yacht Sales and we have created very robust and proven charter management programs to help our owners achieve their boat business goals with charter income and tax advantages as well as the most established and proven crewed yacht program . But we could not have done this by ourselves.

course catamaran 2023

We identified some of the best boutique charter companies in the industry like TMM Yacht Charters, The Catamaran Company, BVI Yacht Charters and Dream Caribbean Blue, Cruise Abaco etc. to manage our owners’ boats and invited them to join us and our community. These alliances create a much more personalized experience and a more controlled environment for our boat owners to operate within. Owners in these smaller owner operated fleets are generally happier and will fetch much higher re-sale value for their boats because the boats are well cared for. Read More>>

The Yacht Exchange A WINNER FOR OWNERS!

But we have also created The Yacht Exchange program , exclusively for charter yachts. Boat owners from ANY charter company anywhere in the world can now swap out time on their boats with other boat owners with no money changing hands. It is a win-win! TYE program is in its infancy and is bound to grow fast in 2023 when we add more boats in more locations like Croatia, Turkey, Australia and Asia Pacific.  We encourage every charter yacht owner to sign up in 2023 and get the community involved and get in control of your own destinies!

CG awarded prestigious RYA accreditation in the USA

Rya sailing academy in florida.

After a rigorous and costly vetting program of our instructors, our boat and our facility by the RYA in England, we officially opened the Catamaran Guru Sailing Academy this year in May with our chief instructor, Steele Greyling heading this division of Catamaran Guru. It has been a roaring success! Since our first school in May, we have awarded 50+ RYA certifications and licenses and bookings are far into 2023 already! Because of increased demand, we have since added Matt Joubert as an instructor and we will increase our available sail training weeks to accommodate eager students. Our RYA graduates have received a first-class internationally recognized education onboard Akani, our Bali 4.2 catamaran and we will add our Catana 50 Ocean Class to the line-up as a performance sailing school . Our goal is always to help each student become a competent and confident sailor! Learn about our weeklong live aboard courses as well as the ICC Certification.

OUR SAILING TEAM PLACED 1ST IN HEINEKEN REGATTA!

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta celebrated its 42nd edition from March 3 – 6, 2022. This world-renowned sailing event is known for being the largest regatta in the Caribbean.

Our team, lead by one of our most seasoned sailor and broker Ian Martin, joined the brigade and finished with  stellar results – first place!  We are so proud of Ian Martin and his team for this victory on their Leopard Catamaran 45.

Pre-owned Cats will have a big year in 2023

course catamaran 2023

The Catamaran Guru yacht brokerage division continues to grow, offering full-service brokerage to buyers and sellers of pre-owned yachts. The experienced Cat Guru brokers now have a presence in Florida, Texas, Maryland, Sint Maarten, and St. Thomas in the Caribbean.

Beyond these 2023 predictions of strong catamaran and general boat sales, we have experienced early signs that point to continued high demand for catamarans. Catamaran Guru has already inked several deals in the first weeks of January with several more in the pipeline.

We see 2023 pre-owned yacht sales to be very beneficial for buyers. We think that we will have more inventory coming to market and at more reasonable prices but demand is still very high. Therefor sellers can still expect to fetch good prices for their boats since new boats are not readily available yet because of a huge backlog. Higher interest rates, tighter insurance rules and limited marina space for catamarans will definitely have an impact on prices. But there are still very eager buyers with cash and we are ready with some innovative ideas to help buyers. Our relationships in banking, insurance, charter management etc. will no doubt benefit our buyers and sellers. Love Stats? Here are the 2022 Catamaran Yacht Sales in Numbers!

Annual Catamaran rendezvous & regatta

We did not only work during 2022! We had the best rendezvous in the Abacos, Bahamas after a hiatus of two years after the hurricane and then Covid. A group of 30 catamarans enthusiastically descended on the Abacos in May for four days of unadulterated fun! The event featured a regatta between islands, the famous rumbrella race on Tahiti Beach, a dinghy dress-up competition and some knowledge sharing and seminars.

It is a great camaraderie and a fantastic time for everyone. This year, we had 9 different brands of catamarans (Prout / Lightwave / Nautitech/ Lagoon / Voyage / Fountaine Pajot / Bali / Leopard / Manta), 27 catamarans in total and 104 people join in the fun. Our next event is scheduled for May 7-10, 2023. The Rendezvous dates are chosen to dovetail with the insurance requirements for boats required to be North of Cape Hatteras by June. We also arrange a post-Rendezvous flotilla to depart from The Abacos to the Chesapeake Bay. For this flotilla, we sponsor weather routing for the fleet.

RENDEZVOUS SUPPORTS THE FUTURE OF SAILING

Catamaran Guru, with the help of the generous Rendezvous participants and vendors, proudly donates money to the Hope Town Junior Sailing Club during the event. This sailing program  helps promote junior sailing programs and summer camps in Abaco, Bahamas.

Our goal is to support young sailors in reaching their full potential as they become independent and responsible adults and sailors. We hope to donate to these kids again in 2023! Contact us if you want to donate!

The Catamaran Guru team did a phenomenal job this year and has received scores of wonderful testimonials and 5-star reviews. Our super star team really shined this year with their positive mind set and we pride ourselves on being the “Can-Do C ompany”, leading through customer service and community involvement. In March we were invited to the Bali dealer meeting in the charming seaside town of La Rochelle on the Atlantic side of France. This is where the Catana Group manufactures the Bali 4.4 and Bali 4.6. and we were treated to a factory tour and guided tours of both models.

Our sister company, Ocean Multihulls won an award, the first year in business as an independent dealer, for “best progress worldwide” with record sales in 2021. Woohoo! We also caught up with our French colleagues and friends. It was a good time!

Enough about us!

We have great admiration for our clients who take the plunge and go sailing. Some go for just a short sabbatical, others set off and sail around the world and yet more charter their boats in anticipation for when they will retire and go sailing. We stay in touch and follow their journeys because they all have a story and have some nugget to share about their personal experiences onboard. And we can all learn from each other.

Catamaran Guru has now become an extended family and this community keeps growing, including our manufacturers, vendors, sales team, our families, and you, our “fans”! We are incredibly thankful for your generosity.

The most exciting part of CG is seeing people from all walks of life come together and celebrate our love of sailing and boats. We love sharing the special and exciting stories of our team members and our wonderful CG fans; we hope you check it out while you browse our site and thank you for being part of this “special kind of magic”!

Moscow Mountain Madness Half Marathon & 5-Mile

Sunday, october 8, 2023 • moscow, id • course map.

A few hundred runners cross the finish line each year at Idaho’s Moscow Mountain Madness races, which feature a 5-mile and half marathon race that take runners on a point-to-point course that ascends the hilly, challenging trail of the mountain for which it is named here in the Palouse region of northern Idaho.

The race begins in the hills above Moscow, Idaho, a town of just over 23,000 in the western Idaho panhandle that’s also home to the University of Idaho.

At just over 2,500 feet above sea level, this town along the Columbia River Plateau is known for its clear blue wide-open skies and the hills and prairies of the Palouse region, which spills over the state border into nearby Washington.

For runners, this race dates all the way back to 1978, when a few dozen runners braved the hills, trails and logging roads of Moscow Mountain.

The race continued throughout most of the 1980s but was abandoned for about 4 years, until it was re-established in the early 1990s. The race included a biking portion for a few years, but the biking event was phased out in 2010.

The starting line lies at the edge of where the forest begins, near the intersection of Foothill Road and Tolo Trail.

From there, the course winds eastward along a combination of single-track trails and logging roads, which the organizers say make for a “wickedly rugged” race course. Runners need to be ready for some seriously challenging elevation climbs, though the course itself is largely smooth, they add.

Organizers plan to limit the number of entries, and no registrations will be taken on the day of the race. They add that runners should “plan to burn,” as this is a seriously challenging race thanks to both the elevation climbs and the terrain.

Race Weather & Climate

Nestled among the hills and mountains of the Palouse region of northern Idaho, about 80 miles south of Coeur d’Alene and roughly 300 miles north of Boise, Moscow typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in September, which has brought record temperatures here as low as 20°F (in 1934) and as high as 100°F (in 1973).

On race day (Oct. 8), the average low is 44ºF and the average high is 77ºF.

Melinda French Gates Says ‘Of Course’ She’s Open to Dating and Here’s What She’s Looking For

Melinda French Gates said in a new interview that she's open to meeting somebody new

Melinda French Gates is opening up about the qualities she's looking for when it comes to dating.

In an interview with TIME that published on June 18, the philanthropist gave readers a look into her dating life, confirming that "of course" she is ready to meet "someone new."

French Gates, 59, told the publication she wants to meet someone "who’s open to learning and who’s vibrant, and who’s smart, and somebody who challenges me and that I challenge.”

However, when asked if there was someone she was already seeing, French Gates played coy, answering, "Not that I’m ready to talk about.”

French Gates was last linked to Jon Du Pre, a former Fox News correspondent.

They were first romantically linked in November 2022, but a spokesperson for French Gates confirmed to PEOPLE in April that they were " no longer dating ."

Lisa Lake/Getty

Elsewhere in the interview with TIME , she revealed that she and ex husband Bill Gates secretly separated and had been trading off on living at the family home since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic

"I separated first before I made the full decision about a divorce," she said. "And to be able to do that in private while I’m still trying to take care of the kids, while still making certain decisions about how you’re going to disentangle your life—thank God.”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

They went on to announce they were divorcing after 27 years of marriage in May 2021.

Taylor Hill/WireImage

Though she described divorce, which they finalized in August 2021 , as "hard" and painful," she noted that things have "been wonderful" since putting that behind her.

Recently, the mom of three — who shares daughters Jennifer, 28, and Phoebe, 21 , as well as son Rory, 25, with her ex-husband — attended the White House State Dinner with Rory and celebrated daughter Jennifer's graduation from medical school .

After announcing she was resigning from the  Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation , she also  pledged $1 billion  to support women’s rights in the United States.

“What I’m trying to do is make sure that women can step into their full power, that women see their power," she told TIME . "It’s not something we give them. We have it. We’re born with it.”

More than 40,000 migrants have crossed the Channel since Sunak promised to stop the boats

More than 40,000 migrants have crossed the Channel since Rishi Sunak pledged to stop the boats .

As many as 750 migrants including children are estimated to have reached the UK in small boats on Tuesday pushing the numbers of migrants this year past 12,000.

If confirmed, the 750 would surpass this year’s current daily record of 711, set on May 1.

It means that 2024 is on course to be a record year , up 19 per cent on the same period in 2023 and three per cent above 2022’s total at the same point.

It takes the total that have crossed since Mr Sunak pledged to stop the boats in January last year to around 41,500.

Labour said the figures blew apart the Prime Minister’s claims that small boat arrivals were coming down, although the Tories maintained the figures for crossings over the past 12 months were still down on the previous 12 months.

Last year saw a 36 per cent fall in the number of crossings after Mr Sunak said on Jan 4 that stopping the boats would be one of five key pledges of his Government. However, they have increased this year, partly fuelled by a surge in Vietnamese migrants.

On Tuesday, Border Force catamarans Hurricane and Defender and lifeboats from Dover, Dungeness and Ramsgate were deployed to rescue migrants. People smugglers were reported to have crammed up to 80 people into each of the flimsy dinghies to cross the Channel.

‘Desperately sad’

Mr Sunak said the fact young children were crossing the Channel was “desperately sad” and demonstrated why his Rwanda policy needed to be implemented.

He told broadcasters: “It’s desperately sad to see young children being put in these very dangerous situations, making these crossings, which illustrates why we have to stop the boats, something I’m determined to do and have a clear plan to do so.

“If re-elected as Prime Minister, the flights will go to Rwanda, we will build that deterrent, removing the incentive for people to come here in the first place.

“That’s the only way to solve this problem and in contrast Keir Starmer would release everyone that we have detained, illegal migrants would be on our streets, they wouldn’t be on the planes, which would be cancelled. There would be no deterrent.”

However, Stephen Kinnock, the shadow immigration minister, said: “Rishi Sunak has spent more time desperately lying his way through the election campaign instead of getting a grip on the crisis created on his watch.

“The Conservatives have failed to stop the boats. They’ve broken the asylum system and voters are being stung for £8 million every day in asylum hotel bills. This can’t go on.

“Labour will turn the page on 14 years of Tory chaos. Our border security command will smash the criminal gangs running this vile trade, and our beefed up returns unit will remove those with no right to be in the UK.”

US SAILING OPENS NOMINATIONS FOR 2024 ROLEX YACHTSMAN AND YACHTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR

BRISTOL, R.I. (June 18, 2024) – US Sailing today announced that it has opened nominations for the 2024 US Sailing Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year, widely acknowledged as the premier individual sailing honors in the nation.

Established in 1961 by US Sailing and in partnership with Rolex since 1980, US Sailing’s Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year award recognizes the individual male and female American sailors who have demonstrated on-the-water excellence at international and national events, bringing global recognition to sailing in the United States. Previous winners include world champions, offshore record holders, America’s Cup winners, and more.

Beginning June 18 through December 18, US Sailing is seeking nominees who are United States citizens and have demonstrated on-the-water excellence at national and international events bringing global recognition to sailing in the United States in the calendar year.

New this year, US Sailing is opening the nomination period in the spring, instead of the fall as in past years. This decision was made to enable a larger nomination pool and acknowledge the year-round participation of the sport.

Following closure of the nomination period, US Sailing’s Yachtsman and Yachtswoman nominating committee, approved by the Board of Directors, will select three finalists for both the Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Award based on the merits of the nominees. The finalists will be posted to a ballot and presented to voting groups of past award winners and sailing media journalists who will vote for the winners. Winners will be announced in a ceremony in February 2025 at US Sailing’s Sailing Leadership Forum in Coronado, California. Details to be announced.
