Since the XVI century the name of Picchiotti has been closely linked to the Italian Seafaring Tradition . A maritime heritage that, ranging from work boats as well as ocean sailing ships or military vessels, has led to the birth of the modern yachting era.

In 2010 the Picchiotti brand was revamped and leaped into the contemporary age with the construction of 3 yachts of the Vitruvius Explorer series.

Today this history and tradition has joined The Italian Sea Group .

Made in Italy

Craftmanship, attention to details and capability of combining heritage,  innovation and building technique in inimitable design, these hallmarks of the Made in Italy have always been part of the Picchiotti DNA.

The Italian Register of Shipping has recorded 599 Picchiotti boats delivered from 1848 to 1978.

In 1902, Picchiotti realised the very first leisure yacht ever built in Italy, the motor yacht L’Espresso. In 1905 it launched the gentleman yacht Espero, while building smaller projects such as the Liu’, the famous little lake boat of the Maestro Giacomo Puccini.

After World War II, Picchiotti contributed to the rebirth of the leisure yachting industry with the building of famous gentleman yachts such as the MY Kon Tiki in 1947, or MY Anita in 1955 or the Solitaire, 42,4 m motor yacht in 1977, to name but a few.

In 1982 the flagship of the Picchiotti fleet – and one of the largest yacht in the world at that time – the 103 m motor yacht Al Said was built in Marina di Carrara, in the sheds of the Nuovi Cantieri Apuania, today at the very core of The Italian Sea Group.

Strategically positioned on the Tyrrhenian coast, the production facilities of The Italian Sea Group expand from Marina di Carrara, to La Spezia and Viareggio for a combined total production area of more than 144.000 sqm.

You might be wondering why would someone do that, surely you don’t get money from it. What you do get is new experiences and adventures. So we gathered a list of the 10 best Italian yacht brands for you.

Rightly so, since you’ll find the best beaches in Italy where having a boat or a yacht gives you a great advantage. For example, places like Cinque Terre , Amalfi , Portofino , or Sorrento are all coastal towns that you should visit and with your own personal yacht, it couldn’t be easier. And the yacht itself can feel like a luxury apartment with the newest furniture. What better flagships to purchase than the ones from the best Italian yacht brands?

It can be a challenge to purchase a yacht without prior experience. You can use a yacht charter (for example  Boataround ) and choose from many boats on offer to know what awaits you.

If you really want to stand out among your friends, Benetii should be on the top of your list of Italian yacht brands to buy. It is actually the oldest brand that started creating boats back in 1873. The founder is Lorenzo Benetti and they pride themselves on their Made in Italy yachts.

The first-ever shipyard launched by Benetti was in Viareggio in 1873. After nearly 100 years, in 1961 Benetti starts to produce steel boats, and the first yacht was launched under the name of Luxury Motor Yacht. Choose from a few different categories of yachts such as Class, B.Yong, Oasis, and B. Now or B. Century.

The Motopaniflo is the perfect yacht for travel. It is 37 meters long and it’s beautiful. Wait until you see the inside of the yacht, it is absolutely stunning! It fits 10 guests in 5 cabins and another 7 people in 4 cabins that are part of the crew. In case you’ve been wondering which Italian sailing yachts brands to invest in, Benetti should be in your top 5.

Among the best Italian yacht brands we have to count Azimut in our top 5 list. The business was founded by Paolo Vitelli in 1969. The first yacht that defined the history of the brand was the AZ 43’ Bali one and it “was an immediate success”. One of Azimut’s sayings is ”Italian as a way of life” meaning their attention to detail in the production of every single yacht is impeccable.

Azimut’s products show elegance, luxury, and the best quality you could find. No wonder it’s at the top of the Italian luxury yacht brands. There are about 6 collections on the website. Flybridge, S Collection, Magellano, Atlantis, Grande, and Verve. All of the collections have different sizes of yachts.

The Magellano for example was built for anyone ”who wants to cruise further afield”. It has gentle navigation and limited fuel consumption. The interior is specifically for those who wish to stay on the boat for a longer period. The Magellano 43 for instance had 2/3 cabins and it’s perfect for a small family or group of friends.

3. Mangusta

Mangusta is a bit newer than the previous brands . They have over 30 years of experience in being on the top of the Italian yacht brands list. The founders are the Balducci family who came up with the Mangusta name in 1985. The name comes from mongoose, which is ”the only animal that can tackle and defeat cobras. At that time the best company for fast vessels used to be the Cobra by Tecnomarine.

So the Mangusta was a new challenge, to beat the existing company in the best Italian sailing yachts brands. Giuseppe Balducci’s history also begins in Viareggio when he was working in a historic shipyard. The innovations that came after these years are truly amazing and it’s still a well-respected company.

You’ll find three types of yachts, Mangusta Oceano, Gransport, and Maxiopen. I found the Maxi Open the most interesting. It is a luxury sports yacht, it’s designed to be spacious while still offering enough speed. The smallest model can still hold up to 14 people on board in total. While the 132E has 5 cabins for guests and the owner, plus another 3 for the crew. So in total, it can fit up to 17 people. You can bring a lot of your friends to this yacht.

Using Riva’s own words about its yachts ”Devil is in the details” and I couldn’t agree more. Out of the 10 Italian luxury yacht brands Riva is probably the most luxurious looking with so much detail. It was founded in 1842 by Pietro Riva. Today it is part of the Ferretti Group.

You’ll find three different yachts at Riva, the Sportfly, Open, and Flybridge. Sportyfly’s largest yacht is the 88’ Folgore. It’s an ”irresistible thunderbolt”, it’s fast, beautiful and the design is just magnificent. It has 4 cabins and two standard crew cabins. The interior has everything you ever need for your vacation on the Italian coast.

From the Flybridge collection, I like the 110’ Dolcevita the most. It’s their new fiberglass flagship. And it is also a collaboration between Officina Italiana Design and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. The yacht itself is stunning, and aesthetically pleasing with the highest technology. It has 5 cabins and 3 standard crew cabins, so it’s quite spacious. Let’s see the last of the Italian yacht brands.

5. Sanlorenzo

The last on our list of Italian sailing yachts brands is Sanlorenzo. They have over 60 years of experience in this field, founded by Gianfranco Cecchi and Giuliano Pecchia in 1958. They have been building high-quality motor yachts that can be ordered on request. And their motto is ’made to measure’, meaning you can request them to be made in many ways.

There are 4 collections to note at Sanlorenzo. SL, SD, SX and SP Range. The SL yacht for example is elegant and well-balanced, available in 6 different models. All of them can be personalized based on the owner’s taste and passions. Let’s take the SL106 Asymmetric as an example. It is 32,38 meters long and can fit a total of 15 people on board.

The SP range is quite new, designed with sustainability and comfort in mind. There’s only one model available, which is the SP110. It ”offers the best performances at the lowest fuel consumption”. Have you seen solar panels on a yacht? Yes, the SP110 has solar panels that supply the power to run the hotel load. It fits about 12-13 people and has a length of 33,04 meters. Even from an architectural point of view, this yacht is exquisite and worth investing in. Which of these Italian yacht brands is your favorite?

6. Baglietto

Continuing our list of Italian luxury yacht brands, next up is Baglietto. The brand was founded over 160 years ago, in 1854 with just the dream of having small fishing boats. Its founder is Pietro Baglietto whose vision was so clear that even today Baglietto is a well-respected yachts brand. He created racing boats, cruising yachts, and standard boats. Over the year the family business has been passed down to generations.

Today they stand proud as a 160 years old business that creates the most amazing yachts in Italy. There are 4 distinctive ranges to look at. The Dom Line, Tline, Fast Line, and Superfast Line. But besides these 4 ranges, Baglietto also offers the possibility to custom make your own yacht.

In the Fast Line, there are 3 different models designed by Francesco Paszkowski. The Fast43 is a 43.65 meters long yacht that can hold up to 17 people, out of which 7 are crew members. Another designer for Baglietto is Stefano Vafiadis, whose range is the Dom Line. The Dom 133 – Hybrid, has an overall length of 40.60 meters and can hold up to 18 people. The interior design is magnificent. You can literally live on this yacht!

7. Ferretti

The Ferretti Group was founded by the Ferretti brothers in 1968. They were previously marketing motor boats for an American Firm but then decided to build their own ones. The first one was built in 1971 and was called a ‘motor sailer’. After this, a series of other motor yachts were built by the Ferretti brothers, and soon they expanded into a bigger company.

The Ferretti Group also owns Riva, Custom Line, and CRN. So what type of “boats” can you buy from one of the best Italian yachts brands like Ferretti? According to the company, “the Ferretti Yachts fleet is a rich mix of comfort”. Let’s take the FERRETTI YACHTS 1000, which is a new concept of yachts. It looks and feels luxurious from the inside out.

The amount of time spent on designing and prototyping these yachts is over 15,000 hours. And to this day, it is their largest yacht built. The exterior looks premium with all of the details thought out carefully. The interiors look like the inside of an apartment. With sofas, tables, and chairs that make up a lounge and allow 20 people to be on board. The bedrooms and bathrooms are stunning too!

8. Rossinavi

The brand Rossivani is fairly new compared to the other Italian sailing yachts brands. Rossivani was founded in 2007 by Cantiere Fratelli Rossi. So many brands in Italy have been created by families and passed down to generations, working with the same passion. They create stylish yet simple designs which are made to last for years to come.

On their website, you can check out the fleets as they were made in each year, all the way back to 2000. The “South” was the first-ever made yacht by the Rossivani company and it’s 54 meters. The average speed is 15 knots with a maximum of 17, meanwhile smaller yachts go between 6-8. These yachts can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Looking at the newest model which is the “Piacere” one, was built for anyone in all types of sea conditions. It’s made in a way that both the internal and external spaces are optimized. The overall length is almost 50 meters. Although it doesn’t say how many people can fit into this yacht, however, you can choose to have a large garage on the bow. Simply said, it’s a pretty big yacht!

The story of CRN began in 1963 in Ancona which is in the Marche region of Italy. If you’re familiar with this region, then you know the Le Marche beaches as beautiful, so it’s only right that you need a yacht to discover all of them. CRN comes from “Costruzioni e Riparazioni Navali” which translates to “Shipbuilding and Ship Repairs”. Ancona has been a “strategic maritime hub” for 2400 years.

CRN is passionate about steel and aluminum, to bring their ideas to life and listen to your visions of how you imagine the yacht to be. They say “if you can dream it, we can make it”. Looking at the CRN Megayachts, they are definitely larger than the previous ones on our list. Mimtee for example is a beauty of 79 meters and it was designed for families.

Another beautiful 54,80-meter yacht is the Atlante. It’s quite huge and it fits around 13 guests. Although the exterior is more similar to the exterior of a ship, the yacht is still beautiful and functional for pleasure use. Other fleets CRN designed are Ciao, Rio, Voice, or Cloud 9. The Cia and Rio are the newest addition to the 2022 year. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for premium yachts!

10. Custom Line

As we have mentioned before, Custom Line is owned by the Ferretti Group. If you have seen the yachts they produce then you know you’ll only get the best quality. What does Custom Line promise to deliver then? Their fleets are “designed to fulfill every lifestyle and cruising need”. They have two main fleet lines, the Planing, and Navetta. All of these yachts were made with excellence in mind, so your sailings can go as smoothly as you can expect them to.

From the Navetta line, the 42 is the company’s largest displacement yacht. It is practical, it’s stunning and it blends into the sea. What’s even better is that this beauty is fully customizable. Whatever you wish to create inside this yacht, Custom Line will grant your wishes. It can fit up to 4 VIP sections, meaning that a maximum of 20 people can be on board. This will include 5 cabins for guests and another 4 for crew members. Which one was your favorite out of the 10 Italian yacht brands?

How Riva Became The Ultimate Italian Luxury Yacht Brand

Riva has always been at the top of the Richter Scale of cool. The wooden Italian speedboats ooze glamour and sophistication, especially when they were so famously owned and graced by the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, Sophia Loren, and power duo Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor–the mid-century equivalent of Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Even today, the myth of Riva isn’t just era defining, it’s place defining. To illustrate this, is it possible to picture St. Tropez without sun worshipers celebrating on a Riva boat, or can Lake Como be complete without George Clooney plying its waters in a Riva, evoking a modern day Carey Grant?

Beyond the irresistible jet-set imagery of the Riviera of the 1950s and ‘60s, Riva boats still command smiles and drools today with their contemporary models. And that’s the brilliance of Carlo Riva. Carlo was the great-grandson of Pietro Riva who, 177 years ago, founded the namesake company on Lake Iseo in northern Italy. 

Similar to its larger and more famous brothers Lake Como and Lake Garda, the tip of Lake Iseo sits at the foot of the Alps and is surrounded on both sides by screensaver-worthy countryside, villages and vineyards. When it was his turn to take the helm, however, Carlo broke with tradition and transformed the small family business of made-to-order powerboats into a global industrialized powerhouse. He did this by looking to the American company Chris-Craft, emulating its processes, but also taking it a step further.

At the time, Chris-Craft was the Cadillac of runabouts – they defined a product and a style. They were handsome, powerful, reliable, and attainable by the burgeoning upper middle class. If Chris-Craft was to Cadillac, it seemed, then Riva would be to Ferrari.

Carlo was very perceptive to the growing demands of a post-war Europe flush with prosperity, and excelled at capturing the collective zeitgeist. He knew there was a market for his vision and so with the boldness of a Caesar, he took a massive risk and built a new ultramodern (not to mention incredibly cool) boatyard on the lake shore – a working monument that still serves as the company’s headquarters today.

Although Carlo implemented a modern assembly-line approach to Riva boatbuilding – a process that changed the fortunes and the future of the company, he never sacrificed the family’s legendary attention to detail (such as aligning every screwhead horizontally, for example). 

Even more significant, Carlo became a leader in marine design and application, making his boats not just practical and beautiful but also innovative. This melding of state-of-the-art methods with old-world craftsmanship, combined with Carlo’s innate mastery of image building, propelled Riva to almost immediate international prestige.

In keeping with Carlo’s vision, Riva continues to embrace the latest in modern technology when it comes to building its boats today, with a model line that has grown to include personal speedboats as well as seaworthy yachts. Just as important, Riva also maintains its fastidious attention to detail and infuses each craft with a uniquely Italian spirit.

The signature visual features of a Riva boat and, by extension, the Riva brand are the strips of polished mahogany covering the bow and stern (still finished with 22 hand-applied coats of special glossy sealant) and the famous Riva turquoise blue upholstery. The mahogany details are still present in modern Rivas, although most now sport other upholstery colors than turquoise. Nevertheless, this proprietary shade of seafoam blue is as intertwined with the brand as rosso corsa is with Ferrari.

To visit the boatyard in Sarnico is a pilgrimage in the motoring world, especially for those obsessed with this iconic brand – like me. Treating my special invitation like a golden ticket, I arrived at this hallowed space floating on a cloud. Even more fortunate, it was a Sunday morning when the facility was closed and I was getting a personal tour from the company’s resident historian.

“Here is the first Aquarama,” he says, pointing to the most legendary of all Riva models. “This is Serafino Riva’s (Carlo’s dad) first racing boat, that’s the Aquariva by Marc Newson, and this is the boat done in collaboration with Ferrari.” 

As I’m led from room to room, the weight of history only increases and so does my appreciation. “This is where the carpenters carve the mahogany panels, this is where fiberglass components are made, over here in this engine bay are boats nearing completion…”

But the holy of holies was the personal office of Carlo Riva. Designed by him to resemble the bridge of a ship, the spacious room occupies the uppermost floor of the building and is accessed by spiral stairs of gleaming mahogany. Jutting out above the water, the room is lined with massive windows overlooking the lake – where Carlo could personally see every new boat leaving the factory – and the floor is made of heavily worn, polished wood rescued from an antique ship, complete with rust marks left by the old iron nails.

There’s an ancient ship’s wheel and a large brass engine telegraph (the instrument that has a lever pointing to “full, half, slow,” etc.). Not surprisingly, fabric pillows in the famous Riva blue color line a sofa, stacks of Riva books line the shelves, and the maestro’s long, wide desk sits in the corner surveying the room.

This handsome command post is supposedly just as he left it. And what’s impressive is that it casually effuses that intangible Riva style – retrospective but modern, high-design but warm, masculine but elegant, thematic but not kitsch. In a word, it’s perfectly balanced – like some form of Italian feng shui.

My private tour inevitably ended but my interest was only heightened. What’s that I hear? I’m welcome to return anytime to have a further look behind the scenes, and an Aquariva had been scheduled to take me an hour up the lake to lunch?

The rain that had been falling outside was starting to let up. As I left Sarnico I could’ve sworn that as I looked back I saw a rainbow in the sky and it fell on the Riva boatworks.

Starmer looks to Italy on how to stop migrant boats

Sir Keir Starmer has suggested he will study Italy's asylum processing deal with Albania as part of a "pragmatic" approach to tackling migrant boats crossing the English Channel.

Speaking to reporters, the prime minister said he had discussed the "concept" of Italy's deal during talks in Rome with Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni.

Meloni said Sir Keir had shown "great interest" in the planned scheme, under which some migrants rescued in Italian waters will be sent to the Balkan country to have their asylum claims processed.

Sir Keir also said he was interested in Italy's model of paying north African countries to do more to stop boat crossings.

He added that deals with Tunisia and Libya “appears to have had quite a profound effect” in helping Italy cut the number of migrant arrivals.

The Labour government has scrapped a Conservative plan to send asylum seekers on a one-way ticket to Rwanda, where they would only be able to apply for refugee status in the east African nation.

But it has indicated an interest in schemes under which migrants crossing the English Channel could have their applications to stay in the UK processed abroad.

Italy's right-wing government, led by Meloni since October 2022, is not a natural political ally for Labour leader Sir Keir, but he has expressed an interest in learning from its tactics to counter illegal migration.

Under its five-year deal with Albania, agreed last year, some migrants rescued by the Italian coastguard will be sent there to have their asylum claims processed in two centres funded and managed by Italy.

In a key difference with the Rwanda plan, those that succeed will come to Italy as refugees. Those whose applications are rejected will be detained in Albania until they can be returned to their home countries.

Only migrants from countries deemed safe by Italy - whose claims are more likely to be rejected - will be sent, whilst pregnant women, minors and other categories of vulnerable people will be excluded.

The scheme, which the Italian government says will cost €670m (£564m), was meant to start in August but has been delayed, with Meloni saying it will be "few weeks” before it gets going.

It has been criticised by some right groups, who have questioned how failed asylum claims could be properly appealed and argued it could leave people in legal limbo.

En route to Rome, Sir Keir said he was “interested” in learning about the scheme and later confirmed he had discussed it during his meeting with Meloni.

The prime minister also discussed the model with Albanian counterpart Edi Rama during a summit of European leaders in July, when he said he wanted to "look at what works".

Speaking at a press conference, Sir Keir said the impact of Italy's Albania deal was not yet clear because the scheme had yet to begin operating, but he had discussed "the concept of it" with Meloni.

It is not clear, however, how likely it is such a deal could be replicated.

Albania, which is seeking to bolster its longstanding application to join the EU, has suggested that such a deal is only with Italy, its closest ally in Europe.

'British pragmatism'

Sir Keir also underlined he was also interested in Italy's agreements with north African countries, which have emerged as important hubs for migrants attempting to make the journey to Europe.

Alongside the EU, Italy has granted Tunisia financial aid for education and energy projects in return for greater efforts to stop migrants crossing the Mediterranean.

It has an agreement with the UN-backed Libyan government, under which Italy trains and funds the coastguard to intercept migrant boats.

Both of those deals have proved controversial, attracting criticism from rights groups for the treatment of those stopped from crossing.

Sir Keir told reporters this work to stop arrivals "upstream" was a "more likely” factor than the Albania deal in explaining a 64% drop this year in the number of people crossing to Italy from Africa.

"Preventing people leaving their country in the first place is far better than trying to deal with those that have arrived in any of our countries, so I was very interested in that," he added.

"In a sense, today was a return - if you like - to British pragmatism.

"We are pragmatists first and foremost. When we see a challenge we discuss with our friends and allies the different approaches that are being taken [and] look at what works."

However, some Labour backbenchers have criticised their leader for seeking inspiration from Meloni's government.

Liverpool Riverside MP Kim Johnson called it "disturbing," whilst Nottingham East's Nadia Whittome said the UK should not be "taking lessons" from Italy.

Stuffed Zucchini Boats

If you have an excess of zucchini and want to prepare them in a delicious way, try these stuffed zucchini boats! Zucchini are scooped out and filled with a delicious Italian pork and fennel sausage and cheese. These are a delicious way to serve up this versatile vegetable for dinner and you can use this method to stuff all sizes of zucchini from small to huge!

Confession: I LOVE stuffed and roasted vegetables. They're such an easy way to serve up veggies in an appetising way and zucchini are particularly good for it as they are a milder tasting vegetable that can take on other flavours well. This was inspired by Yemista or Greek stuffed vegetables.

Tips for Making Stuffed Zucchini Boats

1 - I have a really handy little zucchini corer that makes fast work of coring the zucchini. You can find these at Middle Eastern stores.

2 - If you don't have pork and fennel sausage, you can sub with your other favourite sausage or you can also use mince like chicken, turkey or beef mince. You may just add a bit more seasoning as sausages have seasoning added to them.

3 - I actually recommend doubling the quantity and doing this in two trays. The leftovers are really delicious the next day and they reheat very well.

4 - Some recipes call for you to scoop out the seeds in the centre and discard them. We use them in the stuffing, especially with smaller zucchinis where the seeds are tiny and cook down well in the filling mixture.

5 - I cover these with foil for the first part of the cooking so that they don't dry out.

6 - Only add the cheese in in the last 10 minutes once you have uncovered the zucchini otherwise the cheese will brown and dry out.

Although zucchini aren't really my favourite vegetable and I wouldn't ever really buy them I get them in my vegetable box and every fortnight it's a mad scramble to use everything up. There are some vegetables that I love like salad leaves, tomatoes, broccolini and snow peas and there are some that I just want to use up. I don't think I've ever really thrown anything out because it has gone off because the vege box isn't cheap and I don't like to waste money or food.

I came across this phrase recently that I have started using. It's when someone is cheap they have "short arms". Like their hands can't reach to their pockets to pay for anything. Most of my friends don't have short arms. My friends and I are always giving each other things and we would honestly give the shirts off our own backs.

My friend Agatha (not her real name, she wants to stay anonymous on this in case her friend read this!) has a friend called April. Agatha is always doing things for April and April is not shy to ask for things.

"Could you pick me up?" April will ask even though she lives in the opposite direction and has a car. Agatha always drives them and when it comes to parking Agatha always ends up paying (and parking in Sydney isn't cheap). April stands there with her hands in her pockets or dawdling when getting out of the car. And when it comes to paying for dinner April often forgets to pay Agatha for her portion of the bill and she has to hassle her to get the money. She is fond of April and she does of course have a good, fun side but her attitude towards money is annoying for Agatha.

Every time I see Agatha she tells me about another instance where April has cheaped out. "She has short arms!" I told Agatha. She laughed and pointed out that April's arm length was standard but I explained the saying of short arms to her. And from now on, we both use that phrase to describe someone that juuuust can't reach their pockets to pay for their share!

An Original Recipe by Lorraine Elliott

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Cooking time: 50 minutes

Serves: 2-4 people with a side dish

• 4x 170g/6oz zucchinis or courgettes
• 2 teaspoons oil
• 1 white or brown onion, peeled and diced
• 200g/7ozs pork and fennel sausage, cases removed, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, peeled and diced
• 2 cups/500ml/1pint marinara or red pasta sauce, divided
• 2 teaspoons Italian herb mix
• 3 tablespoons water
• 50g/1.7ozs parmesan cheese, finely grated
• 150g/5ozs mozzarella, grated

Step 1 - Cut the zucchinis in half lengthways and trim the tops off. Scoop out the centre with a teaspoon or a zucchini corer - you want to dig out enough to fit in a lot of the flavoursome filling but don't go all the way to the edge, leave a border (as shown). Fit them snugly into a baking dish. Finely chop up the zucchini centres.

Step 2 - Add oil to a saucepan and sauté the onion on medium heat for 3-4 minutes or until soft and fragrant. Add the sausage meat and brown until almost completely cooked making sure to break it up with a wooden spoon. Add the garlic and saute for 1 minute. Then add 1.5 cups pasta sauce, chopped zucchini centres and Italian herb mix and sauté for 10 minutes. Take off the heat. Spoon this mixture into the zucchini and then spoon the extra pasta sauce on top of this. Add 3 tablespoons of water to the dish and cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and sprinkle the parmesan cheese and then the mozzarella on top and bake for another 10 minutes or until melted and starting to brown.

ROME (AP) — U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday praised the migration policies of Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni as the center-left British leader aimed to learn how her nationalist conservative government has made “remarkable progress” in reducing the number of migrants reaching Italy's shores by boat .

The meeting in Rome between the two leaders came after at least eight seaborne migrants died off the French coast over the weekend trying to cross the English Channel.

The Labour Party prime minister isn't a natural ally of Meloni, who heads the far-right Brothers of Italy party. But migration has climbed the U.K. political agenda, and Starmer hopes Italy's tough approach can help him stop people fleeing war and poverty trying to cross the channel in flimsy, overcrowded boats.

More than 22,000 migrants have made the perilous crossing from France so far this year, a slight increase from the same period in 2023. Several dozen people have perished in their attempts, including the eight killed when a boat carrying about 60 people ran aground on rocks late Saturday.

The number of migrants arriving in Italy by boat in the first half of this year was down 60% from 2023, according to the country’s Interior Ministry, and migration formed the core of the leaders' talks at the Villa Doria Pamphilj, a 17th-century mansion set in a large park not far from the Vatican.

At a joint news conference, Starmer said Italy had made “remarkable progress" by cracking down on smuggling gangs and "working with countries along migration routes as equals.”

Meloni pledged a crackdown on migration after taking office in 2022, aiming to deter would-be refugees from paying smugglers to make the dangerous Mediterranean crossing to Italy. Her government has signed deals with individual African countries including Tunisia to block departures, imposed limits on the work of humanitarian rescue ships, cracked down on traffickers and taken measures to deter people from setting off.

Italy also has signed a deal with Albania under which some adult male migrants rescued at sea while trying to reach Italy would be taken instead to Albania while their asylum claims are processed.

Meloni said Starmer had expressed interest in “new solutions” such as the Albania deal, and said she had filled him in. She said the processing centers in Albania, which had been due to open in August , would likely be up and running in a few weeks and that it was best to delay the opening until they were ready since the “eyes of the world” would be on them.

Starmer confirmed the two leaders had discussed the Albania model, but stressed that “we don't know the outcome of it.”

Starmer wants to learn from Italy’s mix of tough enforcement and international cooperation, though Italy's approach has been criticized by refugee groups and others alarmed by Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules , growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants.

The leader of Italy's right-wing League, Matteo Salvini , who is deputy prime minister in Meloni's government, has been accused by prosecutors of alleged kidnapping for his decision to prevent a rescue ship carrying more than 100 migrants from landing in Italy when he was interior minister in 2019.

Meloni dismissed as “completely groundless” allegations that Italian plans like the Albania agreement risked violating migrants' rights, saying they were covered by Italian legislation.

Starmer said he had no qualms about working with Meloni's government.

“Italy is an ally,” he told reporters traveling with him to Rome. “I think the more we can collaborate and cooperate with our partners on a shared challenge, the better.”

Starmer also toured Italy’s National Coordination Center for Immigration with newly appointed U.K. Border Security Commander Martin Hewitt. The government says Hewitt, a former head of Britain’s National Police Chiefs’ Council, will work with law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the U.K. and across Europe to tackle people-smuggling networks.

Before the trip, Starmer said there would be “no more gimmicks” — a reference to the previous Conservative government’s scuttled plan to send some asylum-seekers on a one-way trip to Rwanda , with no chance of returning to the U.K. even if their refugee claims were successful.

The Conservatives said the deportation plan would act as a deterrent, but refugee and human rights groups called it unethical, judges ruled it illegal and Starmer scrapped it soon after being elected in July .

“We’ve moved from a government of gimmicks to a government of pragmatism," he said in Rome.

Support for Ukraine was also on the agenda for the trip, part of Starmer’s effort to reset relations with European neighbors after Britain’s acrimonious 2020 departure from the European Union.

Unlike some politicians on the European right, Meloni is a staunch supporter of Ukraine . Starmer met her after returning from Washington, where he and U.S. President Joe Biden discussed Ukraine’s plea to use Western-supplied missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been pressing allies to allow his forces to use Western weapons to target air bases and launch sites inside Russia as Moscow steps up assaults on Ukraine’s electricity grid and utilities before winter. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that would mean NATO countries “are at war with Russia.”

So far, the U.S. hasn't announced a change to its policy of allowing Kyiv to use American-provided weapons only in a limited area inside Russia’s border with Ukraine.

Meloni restated that Italian law precludes such use of Italian weaponry for offensive attacks against Russia. She said that Italy's main contribution would continue to be in protecting Ukrainian civilians with anti-air defense systems.

Starmer said that he wouldn't reveal details of “ongoing discussions,” but that Kyiv's allies were united in face of Russia's threats.

“We’ve all been clear. Russia started this war," he said. "It’s a war of aggression. It’s unlawful. Russia could and should end it, and that’s where responsibility lies. And so I think it’s really important to be robust about this.”

Vessels like Mike Lynch's stricken superyacht are "unsinkable", according to the chief executive of the firm which makes and sells them.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, told Sky News there are no flaws with the design and construction of the Bayesian superyacht which capsized in a storm off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, on Monday.

Five bodies were found by divers on Wednesday - taking the number of confirmed dead to six.

The Italian Sea Group also owns the firm that built British tech tycoon Mr Lynch's Bayesian, and Mr Costantino said the vessels "are the safest in the most absolute sense".

"Being the manufacturer of Perini [boats], I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He said their structure and keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

Mr Costantino said news of the sinking "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

It is understood Italian prosecutors investigating the incident are continuing to hold interviews with the survivors.

On Tuesday they questioned the captain for more than two hours to help reconstruct what happened and provide useful technical details.

Four British inspectors are also in Porticello and have begun a preliminary assessment of events.

It is understood they will look at all relevant aspects of the incident, including the design, stability, and operation of the vessel. They will also examine the effects of the weather conditions experienced.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Divers will resume efforts on Thursday morning to bring ashore a body they found earlier. One more person remains missing.

Starmer in Italy to discuss migration with PM Meloni

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said he is “interested” in learning about Italy’s scheme to send migrants rescued at sea to Albania to process their asylum claims, as he begins his first official visit to Rome.

The British leader is meeting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Monday.

Top of the agenda will be migration and how the UK can learn from Italy - the European Union member receiving the highest number of migrant arrivals, but which has recently seen a dramatic fall.

Sir Keir said he wanted to understand how Italy had achieved that reduction, adding: "I've long believed that prevention and stopping people travelling in the first place is one of the best ways to deal with this particular issue."

Sir Keir and Meloni are prime ministers on opposite political sides. One started off in politics by joining the young socialists and now leads a Labour government in the UK, while the other began with young neo-fascists and now helms a right-wing coalition in Italy. Both, however, are keen to build on a crucial European relationship.

At Monday’s meeting, the pair will discuss what is known as irregular migration, among other issues, as both countries aim to reduce arrivals by sea.

On the continent, Frontex, the EU’s border force, has calculated a 64% drop this year in those making the perilous crossing from north Africa to Italy.

Just over 43,000 have arrived so far this year, according to the United Nations, compared to a total of almost 158,000 in 2023. Some try to continue their route through France and up to Britain.

The UK is struggling to respond to the migrant crisis in the English Channel, with arrivals from France up on last year. Eight people died on Sunday when a boat capsized in the Channel.

Central to the fall in crossings to Italy are financial deals struck with Tunisia and Libya – where most people depart from for Europe.

The EU paid Tunisia €105m (£88m) in 2023 to boost border security and train up its coastguard. Italy supplied the country with patrol vessels and gave its government another €100m to support small companies and invest in education and renewable energy.

Meloni also signed a major gas deal with Libya and Italy is training and equipping the Libyan coastguard.

The agreements echo the EU’s strategy with Turkey at the height of the 2016 migration crisis, when the bloc gave Ankara €6bn to boost border patrols with Greece. It led to a dramatic fall in departures.

But the deals to keep migrants in north Africa carry huge controversy.

Human Rights Watch has accused Italy and the EU of being “complicit” in crimes carried out against migrants in Libya, reporting cases of “murder, enforced disappearance, torture, enslavement, sexual violence, rape, and other inhumane acts” in the north African country.

The EU’s outgoing foreign policy chief Josep Borrell reportedly wrote of the “incomprehension” of some member states over the deal struck by the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen with Tunisia, due to a sharp deterioration in its democracy.

Tunisia's President Kais Saied has suspended parliament, while opposition MPs, journalists and lawyers have been arrested.

Some members of the European Parliament have complained of “bankrolling dictators across the region".

In Rome, Sir Keir is likely to hear about the range of measures Italy is taking to counter irregular migration, including reception centres it is building in neighbouring Albania, which are due to open later this year after some delays.

The two centres, funded and managed by Italy, could hold up to 36,000 migrants per year. While there, they will be able to apply for asylum in Italy. If refused, they will face deportation.

While the Albanian government has suggested that such a deal is only with Italy, its closest ally in Europe, Sir Keir has shown interest in the outsourcing model, holding talks with his Italian and Albanian counterparts at the European Political Community summit at Blenheim Palace in July.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy told the BBC on Sunday that the prime minister would discuss with Meloni the work Italy had done on migration, "particularly with Albania".

Lammy said that because Italy’s arrival numbers had reduced, "we are interested" in discussing the country’s schemes, not just with Albania, but with Syria and Libya as well.

Alberto-Horst Neidhardt, a migration specialist at the European Policy Centre thinktank, said that “Britain is exposed to the consequences of decisions in the EU, without having a say – and that weakens its capacity to manage migration flows”.

“It was quite difficult for the previous British government to seek effective solutions with France – and so it makes sense to turn to Italy for this new prime minister.”

Meloni was probably Rishi Sunak’s closest ally in Europe. Both right-wingers, their political chemistry was clear, with Sunak calling her “a lovely person” after their last meeting at the G7 summit.

His successor may not be such a natural political fit for Meloni – but she is arguably the EU’s strongest right-wing leader and Starmer knows that to solve the migration challenge, all roads lead to Rome.

Yvette Cooper has defended an Italian deal which will let the country process some asylum claims offshore in Albania , describing it as “very, very different” from Rishi Sunak ’s Rwanda plan.

The home secretary said the arrangement is not comparable to the previous government’s plans to deport some migrants to the east African nation, stressing that the Albanian scheme involves processing.

Under the Conservatives ’ scheme, which Labour scrapped immediately after the general election, asylum seekers would have been permanently deported to Rwanda.

By contrast, Tirana will accept asylum seekers on Italy’s behalf while their claims are processed. Failed asylum seekers from safe countries will then be returned to those countries, while those whose asylum claims are successful, expected to be a small minority, will be brought to Italy.

Ahead of a visit to Rome to meet Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, Sir Keir Starmer said he is “interested” in Italy’s deal with Albania.

Asked whether he would consider seeking a similar agreement, the prime minister said: “Let’s see.

“It’s early days, I’m interested in how that works, I think everybody else is. It’s very, very early days.” During his visit to Rome, Sir Keir appeared to downplay Britain’s interest in replicating the scheme, instead saying Italy’s success reducing the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean appears to be due to “upstream work that's been done in some of the countries where people are coming from”.

A key aspect of the Italian PM’s approach to migrants crossing the Mediterranean into Italy is financial deals with countries such as Tunisia and Libya to stop boats setting off from north Africa.

Downing Street praised Ms Meloni ahead of Sir Keir’s trip to Italy, telling journalists the PM would discuss her country’s success in tackling illegal immigration. The country has seen a 60 per cent drop in boat crossings in the past year.

Sir Keir told broadcasters: “I've long believed, by the way, that prevention and stopping people travelling in the first place is one of the best ways to deal with this particular issue.

"So I am very interested to know how that upstream work went, looking, of course, at other schemes, looking forward to my bilateral with the prime minister this afternoon, but we've already got a shared intent to work together on this trade, this vile trade, of pushing people across borders."

But, pressed on whether Labour would consider such a scheme, Ms Cooper told ITV’s Good Morning Britain : “It’s very, very different. So the arrangement that they have in place - and look, it’s not working yet, so we don’t know how it will play out - but it is a very, very different approach.

"First of all, this is Italian processing taking place in Albania. It has UNHCR oversight, so it is being monitored to make sure that it meets international standards.

"It’s being done in cooperation between those two countries, and what they’re actually doing is looking at those people who arrive in Italy, who have come from predominantly safe countries, and they’re using it as a way to try and fast-track decisions and returns.

"Now we think there is another way we can fast-track decisions and returns for people who arrive from predominantly safer countries.

"We should be fast-tracking those cases. We should be making sure you don’t have people spending years in the asylum system, which ends up being hugely costly, hugely chaotic. That’s the system we’ve inherited."

It came after eight people died while attempting to cross the English Channel on Sunday morning.

Sir Keir has been urged by Labour MPs to distance himself from far-right Ms Meloni’s approach on immigration.

Left-wing Labour MP Kim Johnson told The Guardian : “Meloni’s approach to Albanian migration has been described as a ‘model of mismanagement and a blueprint for abuse’ by Human Rights Watch. It is disturbing that Starmer is seeking to learn lessons from a neo-fascist government – particularly after the anti-refugee riots and far-right racist terrorism that swept Britain this summer.
