Home, Sweet Home

M/y home  is the world's first fast displacement yacht by heesen with a hybrid propulsion. the yacht is also known as project nova and yn 17859..

HOME  is a full aluminum yacht under 500 GT and measures 50m in length. She has a transatlantic range of 3,750 nautical miles at a speed of 12 knots. Her twin  MTU 12V with 600 kW each power her up to 16.3 knots. Her two 127 kW electric engines offer a speed of 9 knots just using generators with less noise and vibrating.

The yacht features – like many other successful Heesen yachts – the  Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) by Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen. The exterior design was created by Omega Architects .

Home Yacht Heesen

During her sea trials, HOME reached the contractual speed of 16.3 with the traditional diesel engines and 9 knots in hybrid mode. Also, the noise and vibrations levels are under the contracted goals.

Furthermore, the yacht showed her efficiency. At 12 knots she consumes 98 liters per hour of diesel. That can be reduced to 45 liters per hour in the hybrid mode with a speed of 10 knots. Announced was a range of 3,750 nautical miles at 12 knots. Heesen corrected this number up to 4,250 nm.

HOME Interior

The owner assigned Cristiano Gatto to design the sophisticated linear interior. The full-beam owner suite (forward on the main deck) features floor-to-ceiling windows and a private study.

Guests cabins can be found on the lower deck amidships. There are  two doubles, two twins, and one full-beam VIP suite. The crew area with mess and cabins is forward located. On the lower deck is also the Gym and SPA. This area is also directly connected to the main deck through an extra staircase.

Meet ‘Home,’ the Sleek 164-Foot Superyacht That Starred in ‘Below Deck’

The 164-footer was not only the backdrop for the reality series but also has hybrid propulsion and a "50 shades of white" interior., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Superyacht Home by Heesen

The 164-foot motor yacht Home was Heesen’s first hybrid yacht when it delivered in 2017. It was also the first yacht to combine hybrid propulsion with a Fast Displacement Hull Shape (FDHF), which is proven to outperform conventional hull forms at all speeds. Built in lightweight aluminum, Home delivers 48 percent more fuel efficiency than other yachts of the same size.

Another perk of the hybrid propulsion package is reduced noise and vibration. Sensory expert Barry Smith, founder of the Centre for the Study of the Senses, discovered that the enjoyment of fine dining and wine while cruising in electric mode is significantly enhanced.

“Our research has shown that the brain’s processing of taste is affected by noise, which reduces the tongue’s ability to detect salt, sweet and sour,” says Smith. “The beauty of Home is the ability to run at a sound of around 46 decibels—the sound level of softly falling rain—enabling those on board to enjoy food and drink with no diminution of taste.”

Home began as a speculation build by the shipyard, before the American owner stepped in to the project. The initial interior was not to his liking, so he engaged Italian designer Cristiano Gatto to rework the design. He mandated simplicity, rather than minimalism. He also requested decor inspired by his residences, reflecting their contemporary Ibiza style. One perfect example: The slinky metal chaise lounge in the main salon by Italian designer Franco Poli.

Here are 10 facts about one of the world’s first hybrid yachts.

Star of the Med

my home yacht

Home ’s fortune took a sharp turn in 2022 when it became the star of the seventh season of Below Deck Mediterranean . Filmed in Malta, the reality series followed its crew over an eight-week charter season, with Captain Sandy Yawn at the helm. Unlike most yachts on Below Deck, Home retained its real name on screen. It was the first diesel-electric motor yacht to appear on the show, and in typical style, the producers added a dancing pole to the sundeck to spice up the onboard antics.

50 Shades of White

my home yacht

Home takes the trend for neutral interiors to a whole new level. Alongside a color palette of black and gray with pops of deep red, the yacht features 50 shades of white, from off-white to ivory. The original owner mandated an interior that gave him a “home away from home”—hence the yacht’s name. Low-slung sofas and bespoke loose furniture create a relaxed and welcoming beach club ambience. The vessel’s teak flooring and full-height glass windows blur the distinction between inside and out.

Party Lounge

my home yacht

One of Heesen’s signature areas is an upper-deck sky lounge. Home ’s casual bean bags, daybeds, and stark-white bar with LED strip lighting provide a natural extension to the alfresco dining terrace. When the doors to the aft deck are shut and the furniture removed, a mirror ball and a smoke machine are added turning the area into a dedicated party room for nighttime use.

A Dreamier Shade of Pale

my home yacht

Full-height windows in the full-beam, main deck owner’s suite bounce natural light off the paler-than-pale color scheme. The off-white bed, rug, walls, and ceiling are offset with a sky-blue bed throw. There is a dressing room, an en suite with shower and a private office. There’s also a full-beam VIP cabin on the lower deck, as well as two double cabins and two twin cabins to accommodate 12 guests, including families.

Moody Sundeck

my home yacht

Home ’s sundeck is the hub of the boat. There are sun lounges forward with privacy glass safety screens to shelter guests from sea spray and wind. Beneath the hardtop bimini is a large sit-up bar and lounge area, which also doubles as an outdoor dining area. The bar lights up in soft pastel shades at night to bring the party atmosphere. Aft is a Jacuzzi, while a projector and a screen set-up transform the deck into an outdoor cinema.

On the Nose

my home yacht

The yacht is easily spotted on the horizon, thanks to its distinctive plumb bow. The vertical front increases Home ’s waterline length, helping it to slice through waves and lift in rougher water. It guarantees a smoother and faster ride for guests, as well as creating more room on the interior for crew accommodations. For a more immersive journey, a telescopic seat on the foredeck rises from the bow for 360-degree views.

Sea Terrace

my home yacht

A central staircase on the main deck aft leads down to an oversized swim platform that doubles as a sea-level sun lounge. With plenty of room for daybeds and sunrise yoga sessions, it’s the perfect waterside hang out.

The Athletic Club

my home yacht

The lower-deck gym is a full-beam, air-conditioned space for guests to sweat it out. It’s kitted out with a range of equipment, including a workout bench, Techno Gym dumbbells, an exercise bike, and a rowing machine. When guests are done with their workout, they’re just a few steps from the sea for the ultimate plunge to cool off.

The Electric Package

my home yacht

The twin 805 hp MTU engines (smaller than those typically fitted on a yacht of this size) can be operated in four different cruising modes: hybrid (with noise levels in the owner’s stateroom measuring as low as 46 decibels), economic, cruising (consuming as little as 12 gallons per hour at 9 knots), and boost, which pushes the boat to a top speed of 16.8 knots.

Fast, Efficient Hull

my home yacht

At the time of launch, Home was the first yacht to combine the super efficiency of an FDHF hull, designed by Van Oosenan Naval Architects, with hybrid propulsion. The combination was celebrated with a RINA green award presented by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco.

Chartering Your Own Yacht - The Complete Guide

Thinking about whether you should charter your yacht here's everything you should know about it..

Buying a yacht for private use is a great investment - in your future adventures, in your new lifestyle, in your mental and physical well-being. You get to explore the unexplored, spend quality time with your friends and family, or party like a celebrity. It's an experience of a lifetime and a dream come true for many.

However, even though you try your best to maximize your time on board, there are still weeks or even months when the boat’s unused and the crew ‘underutilized’. When your boat is just sitting in the marina, it’s just costing you money.

That’s why you should consider putting your yacht in a charter fleet. It can not only offset your expenses but even generate profit. Most importantly, it guarantees that your yacht is fully maintenanced and in top shape for when you decide to set sail on another vacation.

my home yacht

Chartering your own yacht is a great way to earn money off your investment. (Image source: Shutterstock)

The benefits of chartering your yacht

Chartering your yacht is a great strategy for making some money off your yacht when you’re not using it. But there are also a number of other advantages - here are the main ones:

Reduced operational costs & additional income

A busy charter yacht can cover a significant portion of your operating expenses such as dockage, maintenance, insurance, and other incidentals. Additionally, charter yacht ownership produces an income that you otherwise as a private owner wouldn’t have, providing a faster return on the investment.

Increased yacht reputation and value

A yacht that is marketed for charter has a better market profile. On top of that, If the yacht is active and has a proven success record of providing high quality experience to its clients, it will attract both charter guests and potential buyers in the future. In the long run, chartering is a sound strategy for increasing your boat’s value which would otherwise depreciate with time.

The yacht stays in top-notch condition

It may sound counterintuitive but yachts that are part of the charter fleet are usually more regularly and better maintained. Frequent cosmetic and mechanical maintenance that chartering requires can extend the life of your yacht and preserve its resale value.

More experienced boat crew

Charter yachts attract the best caliber of crew that will maintain their service at the highest industry standard. That also means you can enjoy the same quality of service whenever you decide to use it for personal plans.

my home yacht

Charter yachts require frequent maintenance. An experienced yacht crew will keep the yacht in top-notch condition. (Image source: Shutterstock)

Earnings and expenses

As a yacht owner, you can definitely earn a profit by chartering your yacht and offset your costs. Here’s the breakdown:

The price of the charter depends on the market, the size, model, condition of your boat, the number of cabins, etc. The expenses which you must take into account as the boat owner include:

  • registration
  • ship maintenance
  • crew salaries
  • charter equipment (water toys, bed linen, towels, shampoos, etc.)
  • professional photography

my home yacht

Charter yachts which provide a wide selection of water toys are often booked better.   (Image source: Shutterstock)

Even though there are many factors that influence the boat price, we at Magnum always try to set a competitive price that’ll make you stand out on the yacht charter market.  See the prices for the luxury yachts in our fleet here.

How many weeks can I charter my yacht?

For luxury yachts, you can expect your yacht to be booked for a minimum of 6-12 weeks a year, depending on the season.

The average number of weeks is higher for chartering sailboats and catamarans, usually about 14-20 weeks.

What to expect of a yacht charter management company?

With the right agency for yacht charter management , you can reap all the benefits of chartering your own yacht - offset operational costs, keep your crew sharp and your boat in top shape, as well as build a brand reputation.

The role of such a company is to provide consulting, support and help you achieve maximum booking through thoughtful promotion.

Here’s how that works in the example of Magnum:

Once a yacht owner decides to partner with our agency, we both sign the Central Booking Agreement. It states the rights and obligations of the owner, as well as the rights and obligations of us as a central agency. In it we also define the price list according to which the charter service for a particular vessel will be charged.

The agreement can be signed for a definite period (1 year) or for an indefinite period and can be terminated via written notice (from either party).

Bookings, promotion & payments

Once we sign the Central Booking Agreement with the boat owner, we focus all our efforts on promotion and positioning the boat on the market. It takes some time for the yacht to become "recognized" on the market but since we have access to a large global booking system through which we receive inquiries (YACHTFOLIO), this process doesn’t take too long.

A central agency for yacht charter management will help you to achieve more bookings through top yacht promotion. (Image source: Shutterstock)

After receiving an inquiry from a potential client, we send them a detailed offer with the price and presentation materials (brochure, crew profile, etc.), to give them a complete and better impression of the yacht. If the client confirms the booking, we sign the MYBA contract. The contract is signed by all the parties involved in the booking process - the client (charterer), broker, stakeholder and the yacht owner.

Payment to the yacht owner is made in such a way that half of the amount to be paid to the owner is paid on the day of the boarding, and the remaining amount on the day of unloading (or the first working day, if unloading day is during the weekend).

The responsibilities of the yacht owner

If you decide to charter your yacht, here’s what’s expected of you as the owner:

  • During the term of the Central Booking Agreement, the yacht owner is not allowed to enter a business partnership with another yacht charter agency and is obliged to refer all agents who may contact him to his central agent.
  • The yacht owner mustn’t promote his yacht independently or without the consent of his central agent.
  • The owner must deliver professional photographs of the boat to the agency.
  • The owner is obliged to invoice his charters in accordance with the regulations of the Republic of Croatia.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to ensure the registration of the vessel and to have valid insurance policies.
  • The yacht owner must provide other documentation and take actions that precede the provision of accommodation services on board.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to provide an adequate crew in accordance with the size of the boat and the uniforms for all crew members.
  • The yacht owner is obliged to sign the charter agreements on time and report any problems or delays to the agency as soon as possible.
  • The boat must be adequately prepared for chartering - that includes cleaning, equipment procurement, as well as accommodation, uniforms & training for the crew members.
  • The yacht owner must have a registered company and be able to issue invoices.

Why choose Magnum as your yacht charter management company?

Since we were founded in 2004, we’ve been recognized as one of the most highly qualified yacht charter companies in Croatia, with the fastest-growing fleet in the country. As members of the Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association, we maintain our business at the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.

We are well established in the yachting community: our agency is a YACHTFOLIO subscriber and collaborates with a large number of both global and local clients, as well as partner agencies.

Our team of experts have the know-how and the experience to ensure that your yacht reaches its full charter potential - that means maximizing the number of bookings and subsequently, revenue. We fully devote ourselves to each yacht owner and have an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ approach to supporting you.

A Beginner’s Guide to Chartering a Yacht

By Chrissie McClatchie

Aerial view of Sa Calobra beach in Mallorca

With the pandemic driving a boom in superyacht charters , more and more people are taking to the water for their first yachting experience. But while some superyachts can cost more than a million a week to charter, you don’t need to outlay seven figures for your own yachting vacation.

Wondering what else you need to know before stepping on board for the very first time? We’ve turned to experts in the yachting industry for their insider intel on how to charter a yacht like a pro—from how much it will run you, to where to go, and well beyond. Read on.

Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

Unfinished boat finds new home after owner's death

Anna Kaye poses with her arms around her son Jonathan Allen in fron of a trailer taking a boat away. They are smiling in the sunshine. She wears a blue t-shirt and Mr Allen wears a light blue checked shirt.

Jonathan Allen was keen to take the boat on after hearing about it from mum Anna Kaye

An unfinished handmade boat which has been left since its owner's death 11 years ago has now been taken on by someone else.

Les Holmes, of Pershore, Worcestershire, built the boat on and off over a 35-year period until he died in 2013.

After friends and relatives appealed for someone to take the 22ft (6.6m) Hirondelle on , their plea was answered by Jonathan Allen from Tewkesbury.

Friends and relatives of Mr Holmes and wife Gillian were thankful they had found someone who could take the project on and said it was a happy ending to the story,

Les Holmes began working on the boat in 1978 in his back garden in Headless Cross, Redditch

Amateur boat builder Mr Holmes started work on the boat in his back garden in 1978 saying he wanted to sail it across the Channel with his wife.

When the couple moved near to Pershore in the 1980s the boat came too, and was pictured in a local paper as it was craned over the house.

He enlisted the help of sailing club friend Phil Boocock, who carried on the work until a year after Mr Holmes' death before getting "out of his depth".

"It was just his obsession, he loved it," Mr Boocock said. "He'd be thrilled that somebody was going to have it and it wasn't going to go to waste."

Mr Holmes' brother-in-law Nigel Haslock, 61, had been fearful he could not keep the promise he made to his sister Gillian, who had not found a new owner before she died in 2022.

"This can be the happy ending to this story. And hopefully at some point in the future we will see the boat get launched and the dream is fully concluded," he added.

Les Holmes died before he could complete his 22-foot boat, first started in 1978.

New owner Mr Allen said his mum Anna Kaye found out it was available when watching BBC News.

He had been living on a small sailing boat and was searching for something roomier.

"It's nearly 4 tonnes of boat, so it's pretty serious," he said.

"The fact that it’s not finished, that’s a nice thing."

His mum said the project meant a lot to the former Microsoft engineer, after a period of ill-health.

"I wanted something that you could really traverse oceans and seas with," said Mr Allen, 51.

‘No simple accident’: Family blames boat driver for death of woman being pulled in inner tube

PORTLAND, Ore. (KPTV/Gray News) - The family of a 24-year-old Oregon woman is blaming a boat driver for her death, saying she was thrown into the side of another boat while being pulled in an inner tube.

Aliyah Seidel lost her 24-year-old sister Kaileigh Seidel on Saturday in an incident on the Willamette River. The young woman had gone out with a friend and a few people she didn’t know as well, KPTV reports .

“She was very spontaneous and loved to have fun. She got invited out on a boat, and she had no idea that that would be the last day of her life,” Aliyah Seidel said.

Kaileigh Seidel’s aunt, Rachelle Hunsperger, says water was familiar territory for her niece, who had experience whitewater rafting. But on this trip, she was riding in an inner tube being pulled by a boat. Her family says when things got dangerous, she had no control.

“There was some very erratic and unsafe driving on the boat,” Hunsperger said.

Kaileigh Seidel’s friend told Hunsperger that the driver of the boat was whipping back and forth through the river and made one turn too fast. The 24-year-old was thrown into the side of another boat and died of her injuries in the hospital that night.

Hunsperger says the incident happened as Kaileigh Seidel was pleading for the driver to stop.

“That just seems so unlike her. She was always like, ‘Let’s go. Let’s have fun.’ If she was telling somebody to slow down, then she was probably scared,” Hunsperger said. “This was no simple accident. I feel that there is somebody definitely at fault, and hopefully, that comes out.”

Aliyah Seidel describes her sister as a great friend and dog mom who made everyone around her feel loved. She says she used to tease Kaileigh Seidel for being loud.

“She was so innocent and taken so violently because of someone else’s decision to be reckless,” Aliyah Seidel said. “We definitely feel her not being there. It’s a hole in all of our hearts because it’s so much more quiet.”

As they mourn, Kaileigh Seidel’s relatives are finding comfort in reading the memories of her that people are sharing on a GoFundMe set up to help with funeral expenses.

“It’s just a great reminder to love the people that are in your life and just let them know how much you love them,” Aliyah Seidel said.

“She made impacts all over the place, and it warms my heart. I have a serious hole in my heart, but this feels like it helps,” Hunsperger said. “You never know when someone’s going to make a careless decision or a mistake, and they can be taken away from you forever. Hold them close.”

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, and so far, no arrests have been made. They say they are still talking to witnesses, and “once the facts are clear,” they will determine if any criminal charges will be filed.

Relatives Make a Grisly Find in Bait Freezer Amid Search for Missing Florida Couple

A missing anchor, stolen jewelry, and a neighbor's valuable statements helped authorities piece together what happened to Janette Piro and Chris Benedetto.

my home yacht

People say the living is easy on Singer Island, but not even the relaxing Florida beach town was immune from the evil that lurked beneath the surface.

How to Watch

Watch  Deadly Waters with Captain Lee  on Oxygen Saturdays at 9/8c and next day on Peacock.

On November 16, 1998, concerned neighbors alerted the Riviera Beach Police Department (R.B.P.D.) to report Christopher “Chris” Benedetto, 45, and Janette Piro, 42, missing from their Florida home. According to now-retired F.B.I. Special Agent John MacVeigh, loved ones said the couple had failed to meet neighbors for a dinner outing five days earlier and hadn't been seen since.

Neighbors called it “uncharacteristic” for Benedetto and Piro, and grew concerned when newspapers piled up at the door, MacVeigh told Deadly Waters with Captain Lee , airing Saturdays at 9/8c on Oxygen . They let themselves in, already in possession of their neighbors’ house keys, and found no sign of the pair, though suitcases, medications, cell phones, and wallets were left behind.

Benedetto’s Toyota 4Runner was also nowhere to be found, prompting police to call in a Be on the Lookout (B.O.L.O.) alert.

Neighbors called Piro’s sister, Regina, who lived in New Jersey. Regina’s husband, Michael Koblan — Piro’s brother-in-law — said he’d come down to Florida right away to help find the missing couple.

“Michael had gone to a lot of the marinas, and he had spoken to somebody who said that Chris and Janette went on a friend’s boat to the Bahamas, and that they’ll be back,” said MacVeigh.

What happened to  Chris Benedetto and Janette Piro?

According to Deadly Waters host Captain Lee , Singer Island provides easy access to the Bahamas. One could easily make the 70-mile trip in about three hours, when weather provides. However, in November, “winds and currents can come up at a moment’s notice, making the crossing unpleasant at best, and deadly, at worst.”

Family friend Ben Demonstranti, who lived a rock’s throw away from the “very friendly” couple, told Deadly Waters they regularly used his waterfront property to dock their 28-foot center console Ocean Runner for deep-sea fishing, which they did “mostly every day because that’s what they loved to do.”

“When I heard Chris and Janette were missing, it was just bizarre,” Demonstranti told Deadly Waters. “They wouldn’t leave without telling anybody, they weren’t like that. They weren’t spontaneous people.”

On the night of Nov. 16, 1998, the same day a missing persons report was filed, detectives received a call from the Embassy Suites by Hilton after a staff member — having seen a report on the news — reported a Toyota 4Runner parked in the corner of the hotel’s parking lot.

It belonged to Chris Benedetto, and it was possible that Benedetto or Piro left the vehicle when meeting friends for their purported trip to the Bahamas.

Meanwhile, Benedetto’s two brothers — both in law enforcement — came from New York to assist. They joined Piro’s brother-in-law, Michael Koblan, in the searches and stayed at the missing couple’s house while canvassing the community.

Relatives make a gruesome find in bait freezer

On Nov. 23, 1998, 12 days after acquaintances last saw the couple, Benedetto’s brothers swept the house to unplug appliances before leaving. That was when they made a gruesome discovery inside the bait freezer: a frozen body.

Michael Koblan featured on Deadly Waters With Captain Lee Episode 103

Shocked loved ones were unable to tell whose body was in the freezer since, according to Agent MacVeigh, the victim had been placed inside headfirst and upside down. However, upon closer inspection, Benedetto’s brothers realized it was their sister-in-law, Janette Piro.

“How degrading to a person,” now-retired Investigator Mike Waites of the Florida State’s Attorney’s Office told Deadly Waters. “What could she have done to upset somebody so bad to make them do this?”

Ligature marks matched a 3/8-inch braided rope double tied around Piro’s neck.

“My first gut feeling was, ‘Oh, the husband did it,'” said MacVeigh.

Detectives looked into the couple’s backgrounds, hoping to glean any information to further their investigation. Loved ones said Piro was an interior designer, while the New York-bred Benedetto was a former construction worker who’d sustained a serious injury from a scaffolding fall on the job, resulting in multiple surgeries and rods in his back.

He moved to Florida after receiving a $2 million settlement from the accident.

“Janette, she did have an eye for beautiful things, but Janette’s beauty came from inside her, more than the outside, because of just the person she was,” said Demonstranti. “She was a beautiful, wonderful person.”

Demonstranti also said Chris was a man who “enjoyed life.”

“He loved fishing,” the friend continued. “His love for the ocean, you could see it in his face every day.”

How was Michael Koblan caught?

Investigators, still questioning whether Benedetto had anything to do with his wife’s homicide, examined bank records, though there had been no activity since their last known movements. Their next break came upon interviewing Demonstranti, who was conditioned to have a keen eye for things out of the ordinary based on his experience as an ocean lifeguard.

Demonstranti said he heard Benedetto and an unknown man by Benedetto’s boat at around 8:00 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1998, the same day Benedetto and his wife failed to meet friends for dinner. Demonstranti said he heard Benedetto say “Grab the rods” before leaving in the boat, though Demonstranti didn’t find anything unusual about the situation at the time.

“So, a couple of hours later, Chris’s boat came back. It parked just the way it always parked, but the person in the boat wasn’t Chris,” Demonstranti told Deadly Waters.

The unknown man then went to Benedetto’s Toyota 4Runner and drove away.

“Two people went out on the boat that morning, I’m sure of that,” said Demonstranti. “But only one came back.”

Detectives searched Benedetto’s boat at the dock when Demonstranti found the second anchor was missing. Missing ropes — or lines — on the boat also matched the ligature used to kill Janette Piro.

Later that day, investigators brought Benedetto’s two brothers and his brother-in-law, Michael Koblan, to see if Demonstranti recognized any of them. He pointed to Koblan as the man who returned with Benedetto’s boat without the missing man.

“It was eerie; it was evil,” said Demonstranti. “It just put shivers down my spine.”

Investigators interviewed Koblan, who said he was in New Jersey when Benedetto and Piro vanished, as seen in recorded video published by Deadly Waters. His alibi was also backed by his wife, Regina, Piro’s sister.

According to MacVeigh, loved ones — including Benedetto’s brothers — wondered if Demonstranti’s claim to have seen Koblan was a case of “mistaken identity” since Benedetto and Koblan were “very close.”

But a review of Koblan’s American Express card showed that a third party, Mike Kerry, booked a flight on November 10, 1998, from Newark, New Jersey, to West Palm Beach, just one day before Benedetto and Piro disappeared. The passenger flew back on Nov. 12.

Months of searches for Mike Kerry led to no answers, but in June 1999 — seven months after Piro’s homicide and Benedetto’s disappearance — phone records proved a Florida number called Regina Koblan’s mobile phone on the day of the disappearance.

“I didn’t know what the other number was, so I called it, and it was a payphone from the Rutledge Inn, a hotel literally within walking distance from Chris Benedetto’s house and walking distance to Chris’s boat at Ben’s house,” MacVeigh told Deadly Waters.

During a thorough search through boxes of records at the Rutledge Inn, MacVeigh found a registration card for Mike Kerry, whose address was the same as Koblan’s Brick Township, New Jersey home. Handwriting experts from the F.B.I.’s labs in Quantico, Virginia, said they were “one hundred percent” certain that Kerry’s handwriting matched Koblan’s, proving they were the same person.

It also proved Koblan was on Singer Island when Benedetto and Piro disappeared.

“Again, we start looking at Chris Benedetto’s financial records,” said MacVeigh. “We determined that Chris lent Michael $160,000.”

A case of the missing jewelry

With the help of Prosecutor John Kasternakes of the U.S. Department of Justice, investigators reviewed phone records from the boat Koblan stayed on while he was still on Singer Island. It showed someone on the boat called DeAngelis Jewelers of New York City during Koblan’s stay, which raised a red flag for authorities.

“Then I realized that Janette’s engagement ring, diamond earrings, and some of the watches that she owned were missing,” said MacVeigh, citing a July 1998 home video Piro recorded, showing her home and its valuables for insurance purposes, as published by Deadly Waters.

Benedetto’s safe deposit box contained certification from DeAngelis Jewelers, showing the valuables were worth $58,300.

In May 2003, four years and five months into the investigation, authorities visited the New York jeweler. The man confirmed that Michael Koblan had come in to sell a ring believed to have belonged to Janette Piro.

“The problem is there’s no receipts,” according to MacVeigh.

In what was already a significantly circumstantial case — especially since there was no crime scene and Benedetto’s body had not been recovered — investigators knew they needed something more concrete to secure charges against Koblan. The jeweler informed them that Koblan was due for an appointment in a few weeks and agreed to wear a wire, a conversation obtained by Deadly Waters.

“What if [investigators] ask about the pieces?” the jeweler asked Koblan.

“As far as I’m concerned, you never saw them again,” Koblan responded. “Because all that would do is definitely throw me under the bus.”

Authorities arrest Michael Koblan for murder

On June 27, 2003, authorities arrested Koblan in Brick Township, New Jersey.

“After I found out Mr. Koblan was arrested, I was so relieved,” said an emotional Demonstranti. “It was like the sun was shining brighter that day, just to give them justice.”

Despite primarily circumstantial evidence, investigators believed Koblan and Benedetto went out on the boat, where the two quarreled over Koblan paying back the $160,000 loan. MacVeigh said they believed Koblan “incapacitated” his brother-in-law, tied him with the missing anchor and chain, and threw Benedetto overboard.

Currents would have easily carried Benedetto into the Atlantic Ocean.

“The Gulf Stream is like a swift-moving underwater river in the Atlantic that’s always headed north,” host Captain Lee said. “Even a body with an anchor attached can be carried away by this force of nature, and if [the] investigator’s theory is correct, odds are it will never be found.”

State’s Attorney investigator Mike Waites believed Koblan killed Janette Piro later because she could have easily pointed to him as the person last with her husband. They ran on the theory that Koblan used the boat’s missing rope to strangle her to death.

“This is premeditated, this is planned,” Waites told Deadly Waters . “It’s just a cold-blooded murder.”

On March 9, 2005, more than seven years after the disappearances, Koblan was found guilty in federal court and sentenced to serve life behind bars. He died only two years later of a heart attack while serving his term.

Benedetto’s body has never been found.
