Founded in 1892, the historic Red and White is legendary for its premiere San Francisco cruises. As a local, family owned business Red and White is committed to the environmental sustainability of San Francisco Bay and community education.

In 1892, seventeen-year-old Thomas Crowley launched the first of many companies which would one day be a fixture of the San Francisco Bay. Using $80 he had saved, he purchased a used Whitehall rowboat, and started a business supplying the ships at anchor in the Bay. His inaugural boat was just eighteen feet long and  five feet wide, and he rowed it alone through the waters of the Bay transporting both goods and passengers at a time when no bridges connected the city to the other parts of the Bay.

San Francisco Bay Sunset Sailing Tour

Sail the San Francisco Bay and watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean! Relax and sip some California wine in a wind-protected cabin with intimate tables, and watch the city slowly light up behind you as the Golden Gate bridge glows in the dwindling sunlight.

Departures: Daily, times vary seasonally. (4pm in winter, 7pm in summer). Duration: 90 minutes

San Francisco Sailing Trips FAQs

What’s the difference between a catamaran and a real sailboat.

A catamaran has two hulls instead of one. The result is a more stable ride (like a Rolls Royce compared to a Dune Buggy).

Will I get seasick?

Probably not. Since we are a more stable ride most people don’t have any problems. If you are very susceptible, you may want to get a patch or seasick pills.

What should I wear?

Usually a pair of jeans, a tee shirt or sweatshirt, tennis shoes & a jacket is all you will need. Be sure to bring extra layers, the bay can be very windy.

What if I forget a jacket & it gets cold?

We have some jackets on board that you are welcome to use.

Do you have life jackets?

Yes, we have life jackets for kids and adults.

Can I bring a lunch?

We prefer that you don’t bring any food. We have beer, wine and soda for purchase. If you are on a private charter, you can pay a clean up fee & bring your own food. No outside beverages are allowed.

How far in advance should I book?

We strongly recommend you purchase tickets in advance as cruises often sell out quickly. To maximize your chances of getting the day and time you prefer, please book well in advance.

What is your cancellation policy?

No refunds for reservations cancelled less than 72 hours prior to departure time.

Will I get wet?

If you’re outside on the trampolines, there is a pretty good chance you’ll get wet. If you really don’t want to get wet, you can stay in the cabin. With a 360 degree view, you won’t miss a single thing.

Is the cabin heated?

Yes, the cabin is heated.

Under sail, the average speed is 8-12 knots.

Partner operated activities are subject to the policy of the operator. The San Francisco Sailing Tour is 100% refundable if cancelled 24 hours prior to departure. If cancelled less than 24 hours prior to departure no refund will be issued.

Cat Ballou is spacious comfortable boat, with room to stretch out. She will accommodate you in style and grace. She is capable of great speed but is at her best cruising in the low teens.

Captain Chuck Longanecker

Captain Chuck, a U.S. Coast Guard Master with a 50 ton rating, bought the Cat Ballou in St. Martin in 1998. Then, with family and friends he sailed her back to San Francisco through the Panama Canal. It was an adventure of a lifetime. Cat Ballou is his 8th sailboat.

Captain Ken Peterson

Captain Ken, a U.S. Coast Guard Captain. With over 35 years of sailing experience, Ken is the boat's pilot when we're underway.

Donald Simpson

Donald Simpson is the a First Mate on Cat Ballou. He has a bachelors degree in accounting, and chucked the cubicle for a life at sea. Sailing and baseball are his passions. Kenny and Donald work together to keep Cat Ballou bristol, and provide world class service to our guests.

Because of this, there are a variety of boat tours – from sunset sails to whale watching excursions – for San Francisco visitors to choose from. To help you narrow down your search, U.S. News relied on expert input and traveler opinion to determine the seven best San Francisco boat tours.

Bay Voyager – Touch of Gold Excursion

If you're looking for an adventurous way to tour the bay (and don't mind getting a little wet), consider this 90-minute tour from Bay Voyager. After boarding the 12-person rigid-inflatable boat, you'll zip under the Golden Gate and Bay bridges, passing Alcatraz, Fort Point and more landmarks along the way. You'll also enjoy expert commentary from your captain – a particular highlight for reviewers. Another high point? Observing the sea lions up close at Pier 39. Tickets start at $99 for adults and $69 for children ages 5 to 9. Departure times vary by day but may be available at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. or 4 p.m. Evening twilight cruises are also available, as are Alcatraz combo tickets.

Adventure Cat Sailing – Alcatraz Bay Sail

This 90-minute boat tour focuses on the history of Alcatraz – a former federal prison that housed some of history's most dangerous felons. Though you won't actually stop at Alcatraz Island, you will sail around the prison for an intimate look at its grounds before passing other San Francisco landmarks, such as the Ferry Building Marketplace and Coit Tower . Throughout the tour, you'll enjoy live commentary from the crew – a highlight for reviewers. The tour departs from Pier 39 at 10 a.m. Thursday through Saturday between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Tickets start at $45 for adults and $25 for kids ages 6 to 12. Kids 5 and younger ride for free. Adventure Cat Sailing also offers sunset cruises, among other options.

San Francisco Whale Tours – Golden Gate Whale Watch

San Francisco's whale activity has been on the rise, making a whale watching tour a smart choice for your next trip. The Golden Gate Whale Watch tour takes you into the bay to see humpback whales, harbor seals, dolphins, porpoises and other sea life that may be swimming just off the shore. This 2 1/2-hour excursion, which is available from March through October, departs at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets start at $45 for adults, $35 for children and $40 for students, seniors and military members. Patrons call this tour awesome and incredible, though some express disappointment with the small number of whales spotted. If you're visiting between November and March, consider the company's Gray Whale Watching Tour.

Red and White Fleet – Golden Gate Bay Cruise

This hourlong tour departs from Fisherman's Wharf and takes you along San Francisco's majestic waterfront for views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and more. Audio commentary is available in 16 languages. You may even encounter wildlife, such as sea lions, harbor porpoises and whales, along the way. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, tours depart daily from 9:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., with reduced hours in the winter months. Tickets start at $34 for adults and $25 for youths ages 5 to 17. Children 4 and younger tour for free. The Golden Gate Bay Cruise earns mostly flattering praise from reviewers, with some tourists calling it the highlight of their trip. Because this is one of the Red and White Fleet's most popular cruises, the company recommends its California Sunset or Bridge 2 Bridge cruises for those looking for a break from the crowds.

Blue & Gold Fleet – Escape From the Rock

Blue & Gold Fleet's Escape From the Rock cruise takes you on a 90-minute sail around the famous Alcatraz Island. You'll enjoy beautiful scenery and hear audio commentary detailing Alcatraz escape attempts and the various felons who called this former maximum-security prison home. Audio recordings are available in nine languages. The cruise departs at 11 a.m., 1, 3 and 5 p.m. daily from June to August. Tickets start at $42 for adults and $28 for kids ages 5 to 11. Cruisers say this trip provides a variety of great photo opportunities, and they applaud the audio commentary. Sunset cruises and day cruises around the bay are also available.

San Francisco Sailing Co. – Sunset Sail

On this two-hour sunset sail, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the city, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, among other sights. Plan to take amazing pictures of the sun setting and the surrounding landscapes during a journey reviewers call lovely and the perfect way to spend an evening. Tickets, which include two glasses of wine, beer, soda or water, start at $65. The tour departs every evening from May through November; specific departure times vary by month. Other tours include a 90-minute day sail and a two-hour weekend cruise.

ACsailingSF – Day Sail

Boating enthusiasts won't want to miss this opportunity to sail on an 84-foot yacht once used in America's Cup. This 2 1/2-hour tour takes visitors through the bay for a close-up view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Sausalito cityfront, among other sights. What's more, participation is encouraged, meaning tourgoers can help the crew hoist and trim the sails and steer the yacht. Tourists give this day sail rave reviews, calling it unique and awesome. Sails are usually offered twice a day Thursday through Sunday, though availability can vary by month. Tickets start at $150 per adult and $75 per child ages 5 to 12; water and snacks are included. Sunset sails and "express" two-hour tours are also available.

12th annual event filled with hikes, walking and boat tours

The event will once again be filled with free public events, guided hikes and car caravans to presentations on the Island, led by field guides and the Mare Island Heritage Trust volunteer team.

Beginning Friday morning, at 10:30 a.m. Myrna Hayes — Cofounder and 14-year Manager of the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve — will guide a free walk in the preserve on the lookout for osprey and other nesting birds and wildlife to view and photograph in the one-hour, 1-mile roundtrip walk on a comfortable paved trail.

Later that evening Osprey watching will take place in the preserve from 4:30 to 7 p.m. that night. Light appetizers (donations appreciated) will be provided. Meet at the entrance of the Mare Island Preserve, Correa Court and Azura DrIve.

Hayes, who has a love for the wilderness she often calls, “the wild near us” is once again thrilled to be part of the event.

“We really want people taking the tours to understand how critical it is to permanently protect the wildlife and cultural history of the southern Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve area of Mare Island and to work to protect osprey and other bird nest sites throughout Mare Island,” said Hayes.

The first Osprey Days were held in 2013 and have grown ever since.

“In talks together with our volunteers and Tony Brake and Harv Wilson from the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, we felt like it was really important to get an event together so that we would have a jumpstart on what we needed in place for the annual nesting season,” Hayes said. “For the second year, osprey were observed migrating from their southern range in February, even earlier than the previous March and April timeframes. We timed this year’s event at the peak of nesting and fledging activity in late June.”

(Thomas Gase – Times-Herald file)Hayes said that since 2019 there are now 10-15 pairs of nesting great egrets, some just a few feet off the main trail and a number of great blue herons nesting within easy view of the trail, as well.

“It’s all quite spectacular and very noisy,” said Hayes.

An added bonus for bird viewing in the preserve is the many trees close to the Napa River for the young to perch on as they learn to fly and an abundance of lightning rods throughout the former Naval Ammunition Depot on which the Preserve is located, also used as perches by young and adult birds.

There are also Osprey viewing boat tours of the Mare Island Strait/Napa River with Dolphin Charters. Four separate 2-hour boat cruises are scheduled by Dolphin Charters on both Saturday and Sunday. Seating is still available for all tours. Departure times from the Vallejo Marina for the 2-hour osprey viewing boat trips are, Saturday and Sunday, 9-11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m..The cost is $45 per person. Pre-registration is required. “With four trips, we hope to accommodate everyone who wishes to view osprey easily visible along the Mare Island and Napa River/Mare Island Strait shoreline,” said Barbara Fitzgerald of Dolphin Charters.

Osprey nesting on San Francisco Bay is still considered a new phenomenon. Until recently, osprey have been described as occasional visitors to San Francisco Bay by wildlife management agencies. Yet, the number of nesting pairs on the Bay and in particular at the confluence of the Napa River/Mare Island Strait and the Carquinez Strait on and near Mare Island have captured the attention of the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory and local Audubon Societies, particularly the Napa-Solano Audubon Society and the Golden Gate Bird Alliance, as well as National Wildlife Refuge personnel.

Osprey have been nesting and flourishing in San Francisco Bay since the early 2000s when the first successful nesting pair took up residence at the southernmost tip of Pier 34 at the mouth of the Napa River in the Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve. The number has tended to remain stable or grown each nesting season. It has held steady at 56 nests throughout the Bay in the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
