UAE YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB

UAE STRENGTHENS POSITION AS YACHT MANUFACTURING HUB AS COUNTRY’S USD 61 BILLION MARITIME INDUSTRY EXPANDS The UAE is set to build on its position as one of the world’s leading international yacht manufacturing hubs as local manufacturers expand their operations, international developers relocate and the maritime industry expands with coastline developments, according to industry experts. The UAE currently ranks ninth in the world for superyacht manufacturing, with 15 projects under development, according to the 2015 ShowBoats International Global Order Book. Local and international manufacturers are set to announce a slew of new projects for the UAE at the 23rd Dubai International Boat Show. The region’s leading leisure marine event, taking place from 3-7 March of 2015, will have boats on display worth AED 1 billion according to the organisers, Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC). Dr. Khalid Al Zahed, Vice Chairman, Dubai International Marine Club Board, said: “This year’s Dubai International Boat Show will reaffirm Dubai’s status as a leisure marine hub. As the water-based lifestyle becomes increasingly popular in Dubai, we will see this sector continue to expand and grow in the future. Dubai’s commitment to excellence in everything it does will drive the marine industry to achieve new heights and bring more visitors to the city.” According to the Dubai Council for Marine and Maritime Industries (DCMMI), the total UAE maritime industry is worth more than USD 61 billion, with 386 boats above 24m built in 2014, up 8% on 2013. The fleet of yachts in Dubai has doubled since 2009 and the DCMMI predicts the creation of a national classification society – Tasneef – and the introduction of the world’s first code governing private yachts, the UAE Yacht Code, will boost the industry’s future development. Boat builders expand manufacturing activities in UAE Boosting Dubai’s position as a global maritime hub, Comar Yachts, which has produced more than 6,200 yachts to date, will relocate some of its production facilities from Italy to the UAE. The company aims to manufacture locally around 100 catamarans and powerboats per annum in the 26-46 foot range, as it looks to penetrate the wider GCC market and beyond. Comar Yachts will also announce a major global launch at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, with the world premiere of its Comet Power Cat line of power catamarans. “The UAE has the advantage of being a major geographical hub, allowing us to extend our reach not only across the GCC but to India and south-east Asia as well. By moving production facilities here we are able to build boats, reach new markets and attract new customers more economically,” said Marco Liello, Partner, Comar Yachts. “If you look at the success of the regional yachting industry then a lot more shipyards should come to this part of the world, it’s just a question of finding the right place.” Local manufacturers are also expanding activities in line with the growth in Dubai’s maritime industry, which also aligns with Dubai’s National Innovation Strategy aiming to make the UAE one of the world’s most innovative nations within the next seven years. The UAE’s Gulf Craft is investing USD 100 million over the next five years to develop a state-of-the-art facility to build a shipyard for the manufacture of mega and super yachts within the marine district of Dubai Maritime City, a world-class maritime cluster in the heart of Dubai. Named one of the top ten superyacht shipyards in the world, Gulf Craft has played a significant role in cementing the UAE’s position as a yacht production hub, and continues to support developments that build the country’s credibility on the international marine scene. “Dubai has everything in place to become a global maritime industry hub and to be a centre of excellence for the yachting industry – there is a high degree of wealth, a commitment to the water-based lifestyle and the allure of Dubai as a brand that stands for excellence,” said Erwin Bamps, CEO of Gulf Craft. “Regulation and integration of the industry are key to establishing international credibility, and the recent announcement of the UAE Yacht Code is a prime example. With these new regulations in place, which is a first-time globally for private superyachts, the UAE is put on the map when it comes to the production of world-class vessels.” ART Marine, the Middle East’s largest 360 degree leisure yachting enterprise and one of the show’s largest annual exhibitors, is also consolidating its presence in the region with its Oman launch and reopening in Egypt. “We are focused on continuing to forge strategic partnerships and cementing our presence in the countries of the region we believe in, not only for the superyacht market but also for people who want to enter this lifestyle with a smaller, affordable boat. The Dubai International Boat Show is the best platform for us, to announce new projects, new partnerships and the ongoing collaborations with our partners in this ever challenging but promising market,” said Gregor Stinner, CEO of ART Marine. The company will also be signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Kleindienst Group – developer of the Heart of Europe at The World Islands, on an exciting yet-to-be-announced cooperation of the two companies at several levels for the unique archipelago, on the second day of the show. Another UAE-based luxury yacht manufacturer, Al Shaali Marine, will unveil its new USD 5.45 million AS100 model superyacht at the Dubai International Boat Show, which it describes as the first of its kind designed and manufactured in the Middle East. “The UAE’s embrace of innovation and best-in-class technology, which has seen it develop in so many other areas, will help it to become the global market leader in the yachting industry,” said Sultan Al Shaali, CEO of Al Shaali Group. “The Dubai International Boat Show will allow us to showcase our offerings to a wider market and help to continue to develop Dubai’s maritime industry.” With potential first-time boat owners set to make up a large number of the expected visitor turnout, the Dubai International Boat Show has ensured a wide range small to medium sized builders will be participating to showcase a range of crafts that also include speed boats, jet skis, quad skis and other marine leisure products. On display are pleasure craft from return exhibitors Delma Marine, Macky Marine and Ocean Boats, as well as boats in the same range from new show entrants Brodie Boats, Dar Al Tawasel Services, Mercan Yachts, Revolver Yachts and Rio Yachts. With over 800 companies and brands from 54 countries exhibiting at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show, tens of thousands of visitors, from more than 120 countries are expected to attend. New country participants in 2015 include Djibouti, Indonesia and Luxembourg, while Italy and the USA return as top participating countries, and the event will see 45 global and regional launches over the five days of the show. New and returning show features draw range of leisure marine enthusiasts New show features include dedicated sections for DIBS Sailing, DIBS Fishing, and DIBS Water Sports – industry areas supporting strong sales growth over the last several years as Gulf states increasingly develop planned communities around an active, on-water lifestyle. The DIBS Sailing section is designed as an interactive zone, where enthusiasts – from experienced sailors to first-timers – can see boats, brands, equipment and suppliers from across the globe in a relaxed environment. The DIBS Fishing sector will meet the needs of even the most expert fisherman, allowing them to get specialist technical advice from experts and see the latest technologies and products. DIBS Water Sports is an exciting new show zone dedicated to all related things, from kayaking, canoeing, jet skiing, and paddle boarding to surfing, kite surfing, and wind surfing, with a dedicated testing pool for water sports enthusiasts Show sectors for this year include Marina Display, Superyacht Life Area, Outdoor Display, Marine Luxury and Lifestyle, Equipment Services and Supplies (ESS), with popular show features including the Supercar Promenade and the Retail Village returning to the show. The Middle East Yachting Conference – the region’s largest maritime networking session – will bring together some of the leading industry experts, region’s top boat manufacturers, marina operators, in a collaborative knowledge platform. In addition, Marine Talks will offer leisure marine enthusiasts the chance to glean the latest tips, trends and tricks from experts in fishing, diving, sailing and watersports. The UAE has a strong maritime heritage of dhow construction, ocean commerce, fishing and pearl diving and this tradition has continued with the manufacture of contemporary, state-of-the-art leisure crafts for today’s boating market. The UAE Inspired Pavilion is back again with a range of local small to medium boat builders exhibiting this year. The unique pavilion provides an ideal platform for small-to-medium UAE boat builders to increase market exposure. Dive Middle East Exhibition (DMEX), held in association with Emirates Diving Association, returns with a 42% increase in exhibiting companies and brands. “As the region’s maritime industry expands, and as the UAE consolidates itself as a hub for boating and manufacturing, it is important that the Boat Show evolves and develops alongside it,” said Trixie LohMirmand, Senior Vice President of DWTC. “By expanding the reach of the Dubai International Boat Show into wider areas of the marine leisure lifestyle we can better serve the needs of exhibitors and the desires of our visitors,” she said. The Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) will again unite to represent the world’s most leading superyacht builders, bringing them together in one dedicated platform at the Superyacht Life Area of the show’s Marina Display. How UAE-based Gulf Craft became one of the world’s leading yacht manufacturers

Helmed by Mohammed Hussein Alshaali, Gulf Craft’s new Majesty 175 conducted its first sea trials earlier this year

Mohammed Hussein Alshaali had a flourishing diplomatic career. The Emirati statesman had already landed career-defining ambassadorial roles to Washington, Geneva and even the United Nations. But it was a very different tide – that of the maritime industry – which would pull this son of a sea captain into a passion project, that would not only build up an entire country’s shipbuilding industry, but would also rise to become a world-class yacht builder in only a few decades.

Back in the late Seventies and early Eighties, when the UAE was just over a decade old, Alshaali, who loved sailing and was posted on stints abroad, purchased a Wellcraft fishing boat from the US and quickly realised the prohibitive costs associated with shipping boats to the UAE. It was all the impetus he needed, along with his brother, to set up their own shipbuilding business – Gulf Craft – in the UAE. “When we launched Gulf Craft in 1982, there was no marine infrastructure or skilled labour force available in the UAE. We were not able to turn to local suppliers for support,” explains Alshaali, founder and chairman of Gulf Craft, recalling the early days in the business.

“Our shipyard is vertically integrated, which means that we manufacture almost all components of our products in-house, with the exception of major machinery. This was borne out of necessity, but became one of our greatest assets as it has allowed us to control each level of our manufacturing process and assure an optimum level of quality.”

Back then, Gulf Craft began with a 218,000-square-foot facility in Ajman where it initially produced 14-foot runabouts for the local market. In 1992, Gulf Craft began to flex its muscle in the luxury yacht market when it launched the Adora 53 motor yacht, and subsequently collaborated with reputed names in the industry including Massimo Gregory to build 77- and 82-foot motoryachts.

Apart from collaborating with external specialists, Gulf Craft parallelly worked on developing its in-house design team. “The Gulf Craft in-house teams are responsible for everything from concept creation, design, engineering, to final production. Apart from major equipment like engines, generators and other machinery, our products are wholly created by us,” says Alshaali.

To understand its scale, consider that today it operates four manufacturing facilities including one in Ajman, a 100,000-square-foot facility in the Maldives and a 462,000-square-foot facility in Umm Al Quwain, the latter of which includes two launching bays.

In 2001, Gulf Craft reached a new milestone with the debut of its first superyacht over 30 metres, the Millennium 118. According to data made available at the start of last year by The Superyacht Agency, Gulf Craft reportedly delivered over 50 30-metre-plus superyachts, at an average rate of 2.8 deliveries per year. Since 2012, it has averaged 5.9 vessels per year, peaking at eight deliveries in 2017.

Last year’s pandemic did throw a gigantic spanner in the works for the manufacturer. “At one point, the global supply chain ceased completely, making it very difficult to receive materials from overseas. Reduced manpower due to social distancing continues to be a challenge,” says Alshaali. “But our operations team worked tirelessly to keep the shipyard up and running throughout the year and successfully delivered two superyachts at the height of the pandemic.”

Demonstrating further resilience, its 53-metre Majesty 175 megayacht completed its maiden sea trial in January this year. The Majesty 175 – along with the Majesty 200 – were announced at the 2016 Monaco Boat Show and it took four years of research and development for the 175 to get here. And arrived it has. “The Majesty 175 is the largest composite production yacht ever built, at 780 gross tons. She redefines the industry’s expectations on what can be achieved using advanced composite materials,” offers Alshaali about the yacht built with carbon fibre and vinylester.

Italy’s Cristiano Gatto Design Studio worked on the interior and exterior design of the 175. It includes seven staterooms and a crew of up to 10 members, with six crew cabins and a private captain accommodation. The star feature though is a 5-metre infinity pool at the forward deck and a hybrid sky-lounge which can be converted into an open sun deck. Massimo Gregory was responsible for the naval architecture of this vessel, which features two fixed-pitch six-blade propellers, twin MTU 12V 4000 M63 engines, each of which are 1,500kW units, and which together allow the vessel to cruise at a top speed of 17 knots. The boat is expected to be ready for delivery this spring, and is already sold to a “prominent UAE businessman”.

Gulf Craft primarily sells under four different brand names – Majesty Yachts which was launched in 2003 and is its superyachts division; Oryx followed in 2006 and offered sports yachts and open cruisers; SilverCraft, first unveiled in 2008, showcases affordable smaller family and fishing boats; and the most recent addition of Nomad in 2015 which throws up options within the long-range adventure cruising space. “Gulf Craft is unique in that we build boats and yachts from 31-foot for fishing for family use, going up to 175-foot mega yachts, and everything in between,” says Alshaali, while adding, “We are very proud to have built over 10,000 boats to date.”

While the ability of Gulf Craft to compete against global shipyards is undeniable, it has, over the last decade, pushed forward an aggressive expansion strategy into international markets including Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Mediterranean. In 2019, it made a dedicated push into perhaps the most important market of all – the US. The Majesty 140 with which it made its entry at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, won the ‘Best in Show’, vindicating its reputation.

The next generation is being groomed to take the reins. Abeer Alshaali, who also is a board member of the Ajman Media City Free Zone, was recently appointed as the deputy managing director. Gulf Craft is a family business, but the position wasn’t handed to her on a platter. She first served as an executive management officer, subsequently rising up the ranks. “Abeer has been a part of the Gulf Craft family since her childhood. Boating is in her blood and she is fully prepared to fulfil my vision for the company’s future,” says Mohammed.

One of Abeer’s pressing priorities would be to open the European markets to the Nomad and Oryx brands. There will also expectedly be a push towards more environmentally sustainable practices in shipbuilding – the solar-powered Nomad 65 is a step in that direction. “We continue to introduce technologies such as solar energy and electric propulsion, and are committed to focusing on sustainability. We have introduced advanced materials in our production including adding materials such as Kevlar and carbon fibre to our building process,” says Alshaali.

While Gulf Craft has already conquered a milestone with the Majesty 175, there’s a fevered anticipation growing about what the 61-metre Majesty 200 might hold in store.

Motor Yacht

Launched in 2006 by Platinum Yachts, Dubai is the world’s second largest private yacht, measuring 162 metres. Dubai’s incredible size is disguised by the elegant lines of her steel hull and aluminium superstructure – the work of renowned designer Andrew Winch. Her stunning interior was designed by Platinum Yachts.

The construction of this megayacht began for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei more than 10 years before the yacht’s launch. The construction, then a joint project between Blohm + Voss and Lurssen shipyards, was halted until 2001 when the hull was acquired by Platinum Yachts for His Highness Sheik Mohammed Rashid al-Maktoum. The project, previously named Platinum, Panhandle and Golden Star, was re-named Dubai.

Dubai’s luxurious interior design blends bold colours with fine fabrics and intricately detailed handmade mosaics. A spectacular staircase creates Dubai’s showpiece. Bathed in natural light from the top deck, this dramatic circular staircase features glass steps, which change colour. Dubai’s spacious decks offer a split-level owner’s deck; a large social area including the main lounge with its centrepiece red sofa; numerous VIP and guest suites, and a crew area to accommodate 115 people including crew and guest staff.

With seven decks, Dubai has a wealth of sunbathing areas; a striking mosaic swimming pool and several Jacuzzis. She can accommodate a helicopter of up to 9.5 tonnes and can carry two 10-metre long tenders.

Dubai has a displacement of 9,150 tonnes, yet can reach an impressive 26 knots at maximum speed. She has exceptional worldwide capability with a range of 8,500 miles at 25 knots, powered by four MTU diesel engines.

How Dubai established itself as a global superyacht hub

World-class infrastructure, luxury marinas and diverse sea and land-based activities have bolstered the emirate's standing as a centre for nautical tourism.

Concentrated efforts to transform Dubai into a preferred destination for yacht owners, ship charters and cruise passengers are paying off, with the emirate gearing up for a bumper season.

The emirate’s world-class infrastructure, picturesque coastline, simplified access procedures, open anchorage areas, luxury marinas and diverse sea and land-based experiences have all combined to establish Dubai as a global hub for nautical tourism. The pandemic has also played a part in fuelling the industry, as residents and tourists seek out more private and closed-group activities.

“We are seeing a rapid rise in yachting and cruising, two key offerings that support our tourism growth strategy in line with the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,” says Issam Kazim, chief executive of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing.

“Dubai’s range of yacht tourism facilities that meet the highest international standards, combined with its diverse destination proposition and commitment to prioritising the health and safety of people, has enabled Dubai to build a thriving global yachting community and offer leisure and adventure activities featuring the most modern watercraft.”

Central to this growth has been the development of appropriate infrastructure. Following the launch of Dubai Harbour in 2020 and the expansion of several marinas across the emirate in the past 18 months, Dubai is now home to 15 marinas with more than 3,000 berths. These facilities can accommodate a range of pleasure craft and luxury yachts, including superyachts and gigayachts.

Dubai Harbour Marinas – the region’s largest – can accommodate 700 berths and also offer the city’s first marina dedicated to superyachts, which can house boats up to 160 metres in length. The world’s first Bulgari Yacht Club offers a 50-berth harbour where superyachts can anchor in the bay free of charge.

According to the Oxford Business Group, more than 200 superyachts (those measuring between 37 metres and 60 metres) were registered across the Middle East as of 2019, with Dubai being the base for many of these vessels. Dubai’s diverse attractions, from its fine-dining restaurants and luxury shopping outlets to its beach facilities and family-oriented experiences, are acting as an added draw for superyacht owners.

"At P&O Marinas, through our collection of sought-after yachting and coastal destinations, our sole purpose is to develop and promote Dubai as a comprehensive maritime hub and a global destination for marine tourism,” says Hamza Mustafa, chief operating officer, P&O Marinas.

“Our assemblage of marinas is one of the most comprehensive in the Middle East, with a total capacity of 1,200 wet berths, 600 dry berths, and an ability to accommodate 60 superyachts ranging between 25 metres and 160 metres. In addition to this, we are continually working to ensure that the emirate remains the epicentre for yacht and superyacht owners."

Also appealing to superyacht owners are the seamless services offered by authorities in Dubai. Under the directives of Sheikh Mansoor Al Maktoum, chairman of the Dubai Council for Border Crossing Points Security, a cross-governmental task force was established to ensure that all foreign-flagged yachts, whether shipped or sailing to Dubai, have a smooth experience on arrival and benefit from full access to advanced marina-based facilities.

“Dubai’s leadership is committed to providing the world-class infrastructure, facilities and support necessary for maritime tourism to flourish in the emirate and for tourists to have a smooth, hassle-free and enriching experience,” says Sheikh Mansoor.

Combined, these various attributes are creating plenty of opportunities in this niche segment of the industry. The Yacht Brothers, for example, was established during the pandemic, and operates a wide range of vessels, from 17 metres to 50 metres.

“Not many businesses were formed during the pandemic, but we offered the people of Dubai an accessible, safe and luxurious domestic tourism option over the last 18 months,” says Isa Hijris, chief executive and co-founder of The Yacht Brothers.

Today there are 22 marinas and more than 3,600 berths for boats, including many for superyachts, megayachts, and gigayachts. To accommodate these vessels an array of modern maintenance and repair facilities has opened, along with technical support, specialty marine stores, and, notably, marina-based health and wellness centers that cater to yacht guests and crews.  

The warm weather and safe, tranquil seas here, especially from October to April, provide extraordinarily pleasurable cruising conditions, all complemented by Dubai’s land-based attractions. The city is known for its scenic coastline, luxe hotels, cultural fare, and award-winning restaurants. Cruise-in, dock-and-dine opportunities are a new trend, offering the possibility to moor for a few hours while enjoying fine dining at a resort or hotel, a spa treatment, or the amenities of a beach club.

Nakheel Marinas Dubai Islands was launched in 2023 along the city’s north coast, offering easy cruising to the open sea; it can accommodate 13 superyachts at a time. 

Luxurious and picturesque P & O Marinas has a total of 1,200 wet berths and 600 dry berths and includes well-known Mina Rashid, which can host a range of pleasure craft, plus superyachts between 25 and 160 meters. 

Located on the prestigious Jumeirah Bay Island, along a promenade that resembles a Mediterranean village, Bulgari Marina & Yacht Club is a superyacht anchorage that includes berths for vessels from 10 to 40 meters as well as dock-and-dine services.
