It’s not an exaggeration to say that Luca Bassani created an entirely new design aesthetic when he founded Wally Yachts back in the 1990’s. They were sailing yachts. They were innovative. And they were…sexy.

But Bassani is also known for his iconic power yachts. In fact, the most recent Wallys— Wallypower 58 , WHY200 , Wallytender 43 —have all been motor yachts. But now that first renderings of the brand’s wallywind range have been released, I’m happy to report the Wally team have not forgotten their roots.

In fact, they’ve developed three new sailing boat models that range from 110-to-150 feet long. The first to be launched will be the wallywind 110 that boasts a full carbon hull and features naval architecture by judel/vrolijk & co .

“The wallywind110 is the equivalent of the grand touring car in the automotive world,” says Wally Managing Director Stefano de Vivo. “It is a very powerful yet smooth long-distance cruising machine – but one that could become a serious challenger in a race - if you felt so inclined. The boat is ideal for an experienced sailor, maybe someone who has had boats in the 60-80ft range and is now willing to make the jump to the 100ft size range to get the extra comforts.”

Founder and Chief Designer Luca Bassani confirms: “The 110 is a true hybrid because it offers the volumes and comforts of a deckhouse yacht, but with a flush-deck that offers the spirit and the performance of a racing boat. The raised bulwarks do the job of disguising the fact that this is a raised saloon yacht, with the engine room beneath the floor. That means all the advantages of the layout, without the compromised aesthetics.”

Besides the full carbon lay-up, there is a high-performance carbon rig and the choice of three keel configurations. Other technical highlights include the use of lightweight lithium-ion batteries and auxiliary equipment, multiple high-pressure hydraulic pumps for maximum redundancy, and a low-profile twin rudder set-up. Naturally, the wallywind110 also features Wally’s underwater anchoring system, and famous Magic Trim hydraulic system for the main and jib sheets.

One of the most appealing design elements is the removable deck furniture, which pays homage to the heyday of big yacht racing. Every seat, sunbed, lounger and table can be removed and kept ashore to ready the wallywind110 for racing. Of course, the design is quintessential Wally, right down to the famous ‘terrace on the sea’ – a deep, sheltered aft deck.

And there’s even a huge tender compartment hidden beneath this deck, capable of storing a boat up to 24-feet long. This keeps the transom clear for swimmers, where a hydraulic bathing ladder can completely retract into the hull.

The two larger boats in the wallywind range are the 130 and 150. The first of these yachts is suited to an owner with experience of boats around the 100ft mark, but who wants a little more space. It has a deckhouse offering a true raised saloon area that spans the divide between indoors and out.

“The 130 and 150 are clearly for owners who wish to take long cruises in any sea in the world, on a boat that offers not only comfort and a high degree of service, but also exceptional performance,” says Stefano de Vivo. “They are therefore passionate about sailing and the sea. The boats will also appeal to young people who want performance and who really connect with Wally’s brand values.”

Wally Yachts for Sale

Established with a focus on designing and building some of the world’s most innovative and performance-driven luxury sailing and motor yachts, Wally represents a very different Italian superyacht style. Wally was founded in 1994 by Italian businessman Luca Bassani, a lifelong sailor who entered the custom yacht-building field in 1991 with the design of a yacht for his family. Luca Bassani is known as a passionate yachtsman and a visionary entrepreneur.

Wally initially specialized in sailboat design, however, over the years the company extended its reach and began to also design state-of-the-art motor yachts. Wally is recognized worldwide for its innovative design and advanced carbon fiber construction techniques. In terms of specializations, Wally’s innovative designs undergo a stringent process from drawing board to CAD review, to detailed construction.

In 1994 Luca launched his 104.9-foot (32m) Luca Brenta-designed WALLYGATOR. Since then, the company’s line has ranged from the Nano 36-foot (11m) daysailer and racer, to sailing and motor yachts up to 197-feet (60m) in length.

As a company, Wally is based in Monaco. Since 2019, when the Ferretti Group announced an exclusive license agreement with the shipyard, all Wally yachts have been constructed at Ferretti Group yards, mostly at their facility in Ancona.

Wally have changed the entire concept of cruising yachts and built an iconic brand both in the yachting industry and in the luxury market.

History of Wally Yachts

In 1994 Wally was founded by Luca Bassani, as a shipyard that specializes in sail boat design. Over the past two decades, the company has been a pioneer in carbon fiber construction, having also introduced numerous production innovations to the process.

Wally combines the latest technology with contemporary design and its products go through an intensive and unique research and development program. Every Wally is the result of a combination of form and function, which means that every technical solution is developed with consideration for the overall aesthetic beauty. Every detail and every fitting is carefully analyzed and designed to contribute to the overall Wally appeal.

In 2004 and then in 2008, Wally became the only yachting brand to be a two-time winner of the Compasso d’oro, arguably the world’s most important award for quality and design.

In January 2019, at the Boot Düsseldorf Boat Show, the Ferretti Group announced that they had entered into an exclusive license agreement with Wally, representing a significant step towards the group’s full acquisition of the brand. The agreement also heralded the start of a four-year period of investment in Wally from the Ferretti Group, including an €84 million fund to be used for brand development and the design and construction of new yacht ranges.

Wally are constantly looking for ways to improve on-the-water enjoyment through performance, comfort, and style.

The Wally collection ranges from the Nano 36-foot (11m) daysailer and racer, to sailing and motor yachts up to 197-feet (60m) in length.

Among Wally’s many world-renowned projects is the 118 WallyPower, a sleek and futuristic looking motor boat, which featured in the film ‘The Island’. The first 118 WallyPower was built in Italy and launched in August 2003, named GALEOCERDO. The futuristic lines, reminiscent of a stealth bomber, have won many awards and this unusual, dynamic-looking boat still generates huge discussion, turning heads wherever she goes. GALEOCERDO was also showcased in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art architecture and design exhibition in 2004/05 – the only yacht to be featured.

In 2012, Wally launched the 166-foot (50.5m) sailing superyacht BETTER PLACE. At the time, the worlds’ largest sloop built from carbon fiber composite, she was designed by Tripp Design with an interior by Wetzels Brown Partners. BETTER PLACE was Wally’s first diesel-electric sailing yacht and is powered via a standard shaft and feathering prop. With all three Caterpillar C7 gensets in operation, the yacht runs at 14.5 knots through a Siemens electric engine.

Today, Wally offers custom-built sailing yachts from 80-foot (24m), a power boat line which includes production boats ranging from 52 to 80 feet (15 to 24m), the Wallyace line of displacement semi-custom yachts, custom displacement motor yachts over 148 feet (45m), the Wally Class division of performance-orientated high-power racing yachts, and three models of Wally tender.

The Wally Class racing division also stages four regattas in the Mediterranean, featuring a successful formula where owners at the helm are assisted by the world’s greatest sailing talents from America’s Cup, Olympic, and VOR teams.

Measuring 33.42m (109ft 8in) from sheer bow to open stern, the wallywind110 oozes power. The all-carbon hull has been painstakingly optimised by the pre-eminent racing naval architecture studio judel/vrolijk & co, with twin rudders and a choice of keel technologies. Carbon rig, flush decks and a low-profile coachroof only add to the impression of speed. And yet this is a hybrid yacht, in the sense that it makes a superlative bluewater cruiser as well. Easy to handle, manoeuvrable and safe with its high bulwarks, it makes quick work of ocean crossings. And once at anchor, those wide decks provide multiple entertaining and relaxing areas, from the aft deck and 80sqm guest cockpit to the foredeck lounge. Smart removable furniture can be quickly installed to host 15 people in high style. Accommodation is flexible and typically Wally. Light streams into the open-plan saloon through the dramatic overhead skylight, while the full-beam owner’s cabin can be set up with walk-in wardrobes, a private lounge and his ‘n hers bathroom. Then there are three further guest cabins and an office, plus room for 5 crew.

Like most entrepreneurial yacht designers and builders of that era, Luca Bassani, an avid yachtsman himself, initially built only sailboats, until 2001 when he expanded into the powerboat segment with the first Wallytender 45 as a chase boat for the sailing yachts and then for the famed 118ft Wallypower after her launch in 2003 and debut in 2004. The 47ft Wallytender was built in 2005, one of which Bassani still owns today. Wally sailing yachts ranged from the 37ft Wallynano daysailer to the 166ft superyacht, “Better Place,” a carbon fiber sloop with flybridge. Wally Yachts was a pioneer of using carbon fiber in yacht construction. Besides the use of carbon fiber material for its benefits of lightweight, rigid strength and aesthetics, Wally Yachts innovations included push-button sailing in 1995, ‘Terrace on the Sea’ beach club and inside/outside living pioneered in 1998, the first canting keel in a big cruiser, and Magic Trim for sail handling along with other sail handling features, allowing single handling of sailing yachts.

The 1998 Wally 88 “Tiketitan” sailing yacht introduced the Magic Trim system that was developed by Gianni Cariboni (Cariboni Srl) with Wally, as an advanced hydraulic ram system to trim sails instead of winches using push-button controls; a few years later joystick integration was added. With the launch of Wally B in 1998, yacht interiors featured the “flexibility concept” of Wally Yachts collaboration with noted Italian design firm, Lazzarini Pickering Architetti, and the establishment of the Wally Class in 1999, allowing competitive owners to hold regattas of racing superyachts. Several of these cutting-edge yachts won prestigious design awards.

By far the most notable Wally motor yacht is the award-winning Wallypower 118, sometimes mistaken for a military stealth vessel for its radical futuristic design, technology, and speed, always turning heads in awestruck wonder. Launched in 2003, this amazing luxury, high performance superyacht was designed by Lazzarini Pickering Architetti in collaboration with Wally Yachts—both exterior and interior. Naval architecture was by Wally and Intermarine-Italy at that time a subsidiary of builder, Rodriquez Yachts. Rodriquez Cantieri Navali S.p.A. was merged by incorporation into its former subsidiary, Intermarine S.p.A. from December 31st, 2012. Both are known worldwide for the construction of commercial and military highspeed vessels, such as minesweepers, patrol boats, hydrofoils, and fast ferries (monohulls and catamarans) utilizing a variety of materials and technologies, and gas turbine engines with waterjets and diesels.

Luca Bassani has described Wallypower 118’s motion not so much in terms of actual speed (she is rated at maximum 60 knots), but the impact of the boat’s stunning shape and silence as she whizzes by. The metallic sage green (Wallygator) color changes in sunlight and reflects her environment—a golden sunlit coast, turquoise seas, gray rocks—like a chameleon. And there’s the angular black glass and carbon-framed superstructure adding to the mystique along with the knife blade thin, almost vertical bow and high deep chines that slice through waves and soften her ride, along with the use of interceptors for bow height control. Her quiet running is due to the triple Vericor TF50 gas turbines that each put out a whopping 5,600 bhp, with each driving a Rolls Royce KaMeWa Waterjet. 3

70 bhp diesel engines power the yacht out of harbors at a low 9kn speed and aid the two movable jets that steer the vast craft. Once in open water, the turbines take over. Exterior lines and open decks were kept pure and minimal, while providing the amenities and function of a cruising yacht; the 118 Wallypower was one of the first pleasure yachts in the world to have folding bulwarks. The interior living spaces have been likened to a sophisticated New York City loft; exquisitely simple, clean design with luxurious comfort. Even the navigational console is non-traditional, like an aircraft’s flight deck.

The 118 Wallypower is an incomparable technical and design masterpiece influencing marine design with its award-winning avant garde style, design concepts, and technical innovations, including the new 165 Wallypower designed by famed custom superyacht designer, Espen Oeino in collaboration with Luca Bassani, keeping distinctive Wally style and design features. The 118’s folding bulwarks are a standard feature of the new 58 Wallypower that increase the aft deck’s open outdoor space enhancing the indoor/outdoor, close to the water lifestyle concept.

The current Wally Fleet of power boats include the Wallytender 43 & 43X (X=outboard propulsion), Wallytender 48 & 48X—versatile, seaworthy dayboats with a more comfortable cockpit and Seakeeper for roll stability. The stylish walkaround center cockpit features carbon fiber sailcloth hardtop that can be installed with optional solar panels for battery power. Designed with a comfortable cabin for overnighting and balanced, and deep-V hull for speedy performance and maneuverability.

The Wallypower 50 & 50X are current projects. The Wallypower 58 & 58X were introduced in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The Wallypower 165 was revealed in 2019 and is in development, as the first project with Ferretti Group, who purchased Wally Yachts in 2019.

Another new project is the Wallywhy 100. The Wallywhy 200 launched in 2020, was the start of this new series, that includes a recently launched Wallywhy 150, and is described as a cross-over of semi-displacement, semi-flybridge, semi-explorer with a semi-loft interior. The models’ W is for wally and HY for hybrid, and the 200 refers to its 200GT volume. And volume is the concept of this yacht with a 23ft beam to its 89ft length, along with the excellent seakeeping of the Wally and Ferretti engineered hull. Joystick system and high-end Volvo Penta technologies make the Wallywhy Series easy to navigate whether crew or owner operated.

The Wally Fleet of sailboats include the Wallywind 110, 130, and 150 (projects). The Wallynano 37, a modern daysailer was updated in 2016 with a magnificent retro look designed by Dutch master Andre Hoek in collaboration with Luca Bassani, that combines timeless classic lines with the Dutch yard Doomernik’s advanced construction technology, design techniques, and sailing features. The minimalist teak interior finish is superb.

And Wallyrocket 52 is another new project.

About four dozen Wally Yachts are currently available on the brokerage market, with around three dozen power boats and one dozen sailing yachts. Power boats range from model years 2005 to 2023 and consist of Wallytender and Wallypower yachts, priced from under $350K to $3.2million. The Wally sailing yachts range from the Nano 37 daysailer to a Pendennis 106 and range from model years 1998 to 2009. Pricing ranges from under $300K to over $4.6million.

Standout superyachts competing at the Superyacht Cup Palma 2024

The Superyacht Cup is back for its 28th edition in Palma from June 19  - 22. As Europe's longest-running regatta, this four-day event will see some of the world's most prestigious sailing yachts battling it out on the Mallorcan circuit.

Initiating the Mediterranean racing season, the event will welcome a diverse fleet of high-performance sailing yachts to the picturesque Bay of Palma. Rose , the defending champion and the first Wally to claim victory in last year's Cup, will return to defend her title. Meanwhile, joining the debutants include the brand new Calabash and many other race veterans making a comeback, like the iconic J class, Rainbow . The renowned Hoek Designs will also make their mark on the course with the duo Atlanta and Vijonera .

Length: 59m Builder: Vitters Year: 2023

The ketch-rigged cruiser Maximus makes her debut this year and will be the largest yacht to attend since the 63-metre Athos in 2018. Renowned for high-performance designs, this third-largest Vitters build has German Frers to thank for design and naval architecture. Since delivery, Maximus has spent time in the Caribbean and competed in the St Barths Bucket . For upwind racing, the 80-tonne lifting keel draws 8 metres, reducing to 5 metres for manoeuvres. The twin carbon rudders aid in precision steering, keeping sailors on the best course.

Borkumriff IV

Length: 50.6m Builder: Royal Huisman Year: 2002

Borkumriff IV will be attending the Cup without eyes on a trophy. The 50.6-metre two-masted schooner was built in collaboration with the Dutch yard Royal Huisman , to a design by Dykstra Naval Architects and John G Alden. The modern classic features Rondal aluminium plate masts over 50 meters tall and has Rondal carbon fibre booms and gaffs. Between the two deckhouses that outline her profile, there are two open cockpits; the aft one is for steering and sail management.

Length: 43.6m Builder: Vitters Year: 2017

Svea is the most recent addition to the J Class ranks and took her class win at the Cup in 2022. The 43.6-metre sailing yacht was initially penned by Swedish designer Tore Holm in 1937, and her resurrection began when Vitters and Hoek Design Naval Architecture acquired the original drawings. Integrating traditional long keel design with the modern build, Svea’s aluminium hull displaces just 182 tonnes and optimises weight with 80 per cent of the interior cabinetry utilising veneered foam cores. The 53.75-metre carbon fibre main mast will also help performance, with all eyes on her as she fights for another title.

Having cruised extensively in recent years, the Bill Tripp -designed performance sloop Cervo (ex G2 ) is reclaiming her place among the racing elite. Another Vitters build, Cervo’s carbon composite construction keeps responsiveness up under sail. The 2018 refit at Pendennis created an open flush deck offering more cockpit space for the racing crew. Nauta Design reimagined the interiors of this pedigree superyacht, which also features atypical equal-sized staterooms. Her sailing power comes from the 48-metre carbon fibre mast by Southern Spars paired with a refined sail wardrobe from Doyle and a new in-boom furling mainsail.

Length: 39m Builder: Holland Jachtbouw Year: 2012

After a decade-long hiatus from racing, the 39-metre J Class yacht Rainbow is making her return at the Cup. A modern replica based on the legendary 1934 America’s Cup winner, Rainbow was penned by Dykstra Studios design. She was the first J fitted with hybrid propulsion and power systems. Since delivery in 2012, she has undergone an extensive refit in 2022, which includes a new deck layout and rig, new sails and winches and an engineering overhaul. Now representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron under her new round-the-world racing owner, Rainbow will be up alongside her seasoned J Class rivals Svea and Velsheda.

Length: 38.8m Builder: Classen Shipyard Year: 2015

The flagship of the Hoek-designed ‘Truly Classic’ range, the 38.8-metre Atalante  built by Classen has enjoyed a long period of cruising and is now poised and ready to race again. Her classic lines, traditionally shaped twin deckhouses, and teak capping rails pay homage to the classics. Commissioned by an experienced sailor, she boasts plenty of race-ready features, such as a well-thought-out deck layout, 3Di North sails, carbon rigging and cable steering bolstered by a fully instrumented steering console set. She will compete for the first time against her sistership, Vijonara.

Length: 38.8m Builder: Pendennis Year: 2018

The 38.8-metre cutter-rigged sloop Vijonara was the second hull to emerge from Hoek Design’s ‘Truly Classic’ series. Built at Pendennis for owners with vast sailing knowledge, she boasts a bowsprit that houses a suite of downwind sails such as Code Sail and A-Symmetric Spinnaker. Vijonara came close to a win at this year’s St Barths Bucket, finishing second in her class. As a Superyacht Cup debutant, she will join other Hoek designs, such as Atalante , the first hull in the series, and Cervo .

Length: 25.1m Builder: Nautor Swan Year: 2013

Dark Horse (ex Chessie ) is making her first splash at the Cup. As a regatta regular Swan 80, she brings racing pedigree to Palma and will face competition with the slightly smaller Umiko, another yacht courtesy of the Finnish builder. The German Frers-designed yacht includes racing features such as a lightweight carbon hull and deck, high-modulus carbon spars, and a top-spec racing rig optimised for speed.

Length: 24m Builder: Wally Year: 2006

The 24-metre Wallycento Rose is back to defend her winning Cup title after becoming the first Wally yacht to claim victory. Rose was designed in collaboration with Wally and Mills Design for naval architecture and exterior design, while interiors were thanks to Pininfarina. Delivered in 2006, this flush-deck carbon sailing yacht boasts a 45-metre rig and a 3DL self-tacking jib for racing performance. The crew of 24 and an upwind sail plan of 640 square metres also helped facilitate her win last year.

Length: 24m Builder: Nautor Swan Year: 2000

Another of Nautor Swan's 80 series competing, Umiko i s making a welcome return to Palma after the last three years of participating. The ultra-fast yacht, which is one of the Superyacht Cup Palma's smaller entries, is a German Frers design. Since her launch in 2000, she has undergone various refits to keep her race-ready, including upgrades such as carbon rigging and new North 3Di sails.

Length: 38.5m Builder: Camper & Nicholsons Year: 1933

Last but by no means least is one of the regatta longest serving contenders, the 38.5-metre Velsheda. An icon among the J Class fleet, although not originally constructed for the America’s Cup like her contemporaries, she has made her mark on the regatta scene. Built by Camper & Nicholsons in 1933 from steel for W.L. Stephenson, the chairman of British retailer Woolworths, she was christened Velsheda after his three daughters Velma, Sheila and Daphne. In 1996, the yacht was purchased by Dutch fashion entrepreneur Ronald de Waal, who gave Southampton Yacht Services the job to rebuild her and restore her to racing status.
