Designing a superyacht is a personal experience and involves making an overwhelming amount of choices.

For those seasoned individuals who have experience chartering yachts , visiting friends’ yachts, sailing the high seas, or maybe even purchasing their first pre-designed yacht, the next thrill might come from building their own vessel. Although designing your own superyacht is a truly personal experience, it also involves making an overwhelming amount of choices. This is why the first step to building a new superyacht should always be to choose a designer to work with – and there are several yacht interior designers you can choose from.

Whether it’s considering how the internal spaces of your yacht will work, what furniture or materials are used, or even working out the external design for your new vessel, collaborating with a designer will make the process of creating your dream superyacht as stress-free and easy as possible. To help, Elite Traveler has created a list of yacht interior (and exterior, in some cases) designers that should be on your radar – and if you’re also on the lookout for a new yacht builder, why not discover our list of the best luxury yacht builders in the world ?

Winch Design

Our list of the best yacht interior designers kicks off with  Winch Design. Originally founded by Andrew Winch and his wife Jane in 1986, at the time it was known as Andrew Winch Designs. It was rebranded as Winch Designs in 2015 but has been one of the UK’s leading superyacht and private jet design studios for over thirty years. Winch Design’s yacht studio is now led by Jim Dixon and the team has created a multitude of extraordinary projects, all of which are highly bespoke and tailored to each client’s specific requests.

One of Winch Design’s most recent yacht projects was the 260 ft M/Y Excellence , which shipbuilder Abeking & Rasmussen say was its “most challenging project to date”. Its owner worked closely with the design studio to create a yacht with interiors inspired by the “Floridian East Cost Deco” style and that felt both personal to him and welcoming to any guest on board. “ Excellence was a very exciting project to be involved with and [she] tested the team to their creative limits,” says senior partner, Ignacio Oliva-Vele.

How to Design an Amazing Superyacht Interior

Terence disdale design.

Based in the UK, Terence Disdale Design is one of the yachting industry’s most respected design studios. The team works on both the interior and exterior design of some of the world’s most incredible yachts, with previous projects including M/Y Eclipse , one of the biggest superyachts in the world. The studio was founded by Terence Disdale, who – despite having no formal training – is one of the most sought-after designers in the industry.

Disdale set up his eponymous studio in 1972 after working for famous designer Jon Bannenberg (Bannenberg’s studio was also where Andrew Winch and Tim Heywood learned their craft). Across his extraordinary 40-year career Disdale and his studio have designed over 100 yachts, including more than 50 superyachts. His wide-ranging design style often follows the mantra of ‘beach house, not penthouse’, with concepts often finding inspiration from the ocean.

Sorgiovanni Designs

Australian yacht designer Sam Sorgiovanni’s career began after he studied Industrial Design and found his first position working for shipbuilder Oceanfast. It was thanks to the experience he gained at this renowned shipbuilder that Sorgiovanni decided to set up his own studio, launching Sorgiovanni Designs in 1997 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The studio has also recently opened an office in Monaco in order to expand its design services to Europe.

Sorgiovanni believes it’s important to “keep one eye on the past” when designing projects, “in order to avoid making the same mistakes” as before. Previous yacht designs that he has worked on include the 390 ft Amana in collaboration with Oceanco, and the exteriors of the 270 ft Secret. When Sorgiovanni is not working on a particular project, he is also traveling the world to consult on yacht designs for clients, working with a variety of suppliers and shipbuilders.

Zaniz Studio

Yacht interior designer Zaniz Studio exterior of Luminosity

Next up on our list of the best yacht interior designers is Zaniz Studio. The company was founded in New York City by English-American designer Zaniz Jakubowski – who up until recently, had rarely been able to discuss her astounding portfolio of projects due to the NDAs that came with the commissions. The studio has an international reputation for creating iconic and innovative projects, which always have strong attention to detail. As well as designing for both private and commercial yachts, Zaniz Studio works across other industries, including creating theatre sets and residential and commercial interiors.

One of Zaniz Studio’s latest projects – and one it was able to share – was the 350 ft superyacht Luminosity , which went on the market last year for over $266 million. The studio was responsible for both the interior and exterior of Luminosity, which was built by Italian shipyard Benetti. What is most interesting is that the team abandoned the typical format of designing the exterior first, followed by the interior; instead, the superyacht has been designed from the inside out.

Nuvolari Lenard

Well known for its timeless design style, Nuvolari Lenard is one of the largest – and most active – luxury yacht design studios in the world, founded in 1992 by naval architect and mechanical engineer Carlo Nuvolari and stylist Dan Lenard. The studio is based in Italy’s island city, Venice, and draws heavy influence from the city for its classic yacht designs, combining strong architectural lines with a deep passion and understanding for the sea. One of its latest projects was the 465 ft Nord (previously called Project Opus).

Not only is Nuvolari Lenard based in Venice, but it also has a renowned Design Center on the outskirts of the city that hosts architects and designers working on a range of tasks. Inside the Design Center is a scale yacht model workshop that gives designers the opportunity to visualize their concepts and research shapes before confirming a final design. The interior design section of the studio’s Design Center also features a showroom where clients and designers can discuss fabrics and materials.

Patrick Knowles Designs

With decades of experience in the marine industry under his belt, Patrick Knowles is one of America’s top yacht designers. His studio, Patrick Knowles Designs , specializes in custom megayacht and superyacht interiors, as well as designing for private aircraft. The team at Patrick Knowles Design prides themselves on their creativity and a strong commitment to making sure projects are finished on time, while also exceeding expectations.

One of Patrick Knowles Designs’ award-winning projects was a Key West-inspired 206 ft ISA displacement superyacht. The owners requested an interior that felt like a five-star tropical resort; through a design that incorporated vibrant murals of plants and aquatic life, lush fabrics and furnishings, and the use of environmentally friendly, natural materials including bamboo, palm wood and coconut shells, Patrick Knowles delivered. The onboard showcase piece is a 30-foot-tall light fixture constructed from Murano glass that sits within the spiral staircase, joining all three levels.

Known for its meticulous craftsmanship, use of quality materials and expert lighting, when it comes to creating beautiful spaces you’re in safe hands with Tillberg Design of Sweden. Future owners that are lucky enough to live on the world’s first residential yacht liner will be given the opportunity to work with the prestigious design firm over three months to create their dream apartment.

The Quick and Easy Guide to Superyacht Interior Careers

what is a yacht interior specialist

Following the success of our ‘Quick and Easy Guide to Superyacht Deck Careers’ , we step inside and offer our take on how to enter and get ahead in the interior department.

To ensure that we are up to speed with all of the latest requirements, we take our lead from the recently-launched careers guidance platform, Academy by Ephemeris, whose comprehensive interior pathway clearly lays out all of the steps you need to follow in order to succeed in your yachting career.

Stewardess: The day-to-day

At the entry-level position of the interior pathway, stewardesses are responsible for maintaining the interior on board a yacht and providing five-star service to owners and guests at all times. The role encompasses varied tasks such as laundry, housekeeping, interior detailing, flower arranging, food and beverage service and onboard event planning. Reporting to the second stewardess, chief stewardess or even the captain, depending on the size of the yacht, the steward/ess role requires a strong work ethic, a great deal of organisation, attention to detail and discretion, as well as a willingness to listen and learn the ropes on the job. A junior stewardess within the interior team on a 45-50m+ boat would typically start their career in housekeeping and laundry rather than in service. In contrast, on a smaller yacht, the stewardess can be a department of just one person, with responsibility for all the interior duties on board. This could include setting up and preparing meals, housekeeping, laundry, organising guest activities, formal meal service, cabin turndowns, and the list goes on!

As the interior team enjoys the most face-to-face time with guests and is responsible for communicating their wishes to the captain, chef and deck department, it is important to maintain good communication, high levels of professionalism, and a positive attitude at all times when undertaking this role.

How do I become a stewardess? Qualifications and training

Since it is the entry-level position for the interior pathway, one of the advantages of the junior steward/ess role is that it does not require many qualifications or schooling, meaning that it serves as the perfect gateway to start your career onboard.

EPH4 2

As outlined on Academy by Ephemeris’ interior pathway, all crew need to show evidence of having completed STCW basic safety training (a five-day course), as well as an ENG1 medical certificate. In addition, some yachts may also require certification in Food Safety and Hygiene (a one-day course which can be completed in person or online). Yachts to which the ISPS Code applies require all crew to be trained and hold a Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) certificate (this is a half-day course that can be completed online).

If you are looking to upskill and ensure your CV stands out from the crowd, there are many options for more specific interior training across areas such as administration, galley, laundry, interior management, silver service, drink mixology, flower arranging, and much more. See the Academy by Ephemeris website for a list of accredited courses.

Chief Stewardess: The day-to-day

Providing that a yacht's interior department consists of more than one individual, the chief stew is responsible for managing the schedule and maintenance of the interior, as well as ensuring that guests receive excellent service.

The chief stew oversees and trains the team in all aspects of the interior department to ensure everything is executed to the highest standard, encompassing tasks such as general cleaning and bed making, folding laundry, polishing silver and creating flower arrangements, and delivering professional and impeccable levels of service.

How do I become a chief stewardess? Qualifications and training

Once you have shown evidence of the basic safety qualifications outlined above, unlike with many senior deck positions, there is no a set list of mandatory qualifications which are required to be eligible to apply for chief stewardess roles.

EPH4 3

There is a plethora of options for you to explore which are outlined on the Academy by Ephemeris interior pathway , including Advanced Laundry Service, Advanced Food and Beverage Service, Cigar Service, Floristry and Plant Maintenance, and many more.

Purser: The day-to-day

If you enjoy figures, have a calm head on your shoulders and are supremely organised, the job of a yacht purser may be the one for you and serve as an alternative option to becoming a chief steward/ess.

Still under the remit of the interior department, the yacht purser is a senior role who reports to the captain, often taking on some of the duties and administration, which would be completed by the captain or chief stewardess on smaller yachts. Although the role varies depending on the needs of each individual yacht, the purser can serve as the head of the interior and manage the interior team.

Day to day, the purser is responsible for ensuring the smooth and effective operations of the yacht, encompassing finances, crew management and administration, guest and crew travel arrangements, administrative tasks and much more. The purser oversees accounting, purchasing, inventories and may also assist the captain with compliance and certification requirements, and the planning of guest itineraries.

How do I become a purser? Qualifications and training

Although there are no mandatory training requirements for pursers, it would be wise for prospective candidates to consider that this is a senior role requiring knowledge and skills across many different areas and departments. This includes administration, finance, maritime law, safety and security awareness, an understanding of ISPS and ISM protocols, as well as strong computer skills.

Those with an existing degree in business, finance or accounting may already be well suited to the role. However, if you do not immediately recognise yourself in this description, there’s no need to panic!

EPH4 4

There are numerous purser courses you can undertake to bring yourself up to speed. These cover topics including VAT, crew administration and vessel operations, human resource management, customs and immigration, and much more. Details of these courses can be found on the Academy by Ephemeris interior pathway .

Sarah Stanger, a spokesperson from Academy by Ephemeris says: “If you are looking to climb the interior career ladder, it is vital to always maintain focus on your professional and personal development, which can be tricky in the demanding working environment faced by crew. Our interior pathway helps to lay out the steps which you need to follow in an intuitive and straightforward way, which is totally unique amongst superyacht career guidance platforms.”

5 Yacht Interior Designers To Consider For Your Next Refit Or New Build

The best yacht interior specialists..

The world of superyacht interior design deserves its own Netflix series. Seriously. It’s a high-class, ultra-luxury, competitive business that turns a small idea into a masterpiece. A superyacht interior should have equal parts wow-factor and functionality to elevate the boat. It takes a particular eye for art, detail, layout, and innovation to be a top name in (any type of) design industry.

For most firms, designing a superyacht is a personal experience. They’re masters at balancing a thousand different elements to create a single, elegant outcome. Elite design studios have the skills, talent, and intuition to create a layout, design, and decoration that wins awards. We already highlighted impressive yacht interiors , but who are the teams behind scenes? Here are 5 yacht interior designers to consider for your next refit or new build.

Interior design by Hot Lab onboard Hull #4 of the Numarine 32XP

Italians have an eye for art and design, and award-winning design firm Hot Lab seamlessly integrates sophisticated detail into their work. Their interior designs are sharp, stylish, and modern. Over the years, Hot Lab has received several international awards, including World Superyacht Awards and Showboats Design , World Yachts Trophies, and Finest Interior Awards . The studio has solid relationships with both Italian and foreign shipyards and works together on both custom and series-produced yachts.

A great example of interior design by Hot Lab is on Hull #5 of the Numarine 32XP (available for a Summer 2022 delivery). The studio incorporates clever lighting throughout the yacht to give it a bright atmosphere that highlights materials from Armani Casa and custom marbles in greens and blues.

Contact Denison yacht broker Alex G. Clarke to inquire about the Numarine 32XP.

2. Giorgio Cassetta

Interior design by Giorgio Cassetta onboard the Spritz 102

Italian superyacht designer Giorgio Cassetta is the dark night of yacht design. He flys under the radar yet he’s worked on some of the biggest and most stunning yachts in the world. His designs have personality, with a flare of timelessness and functionality that instantly makes you appreciate the setting. Past clients include Bennetti and Cigarette Racing, but he’s currently working with Alpha Yachts to design custom new build yachts.

Boutique shipyard Alpha Custom Yachts worked with Giorgio Cassetta to create an elegant interior for the Spritz 102 . According to Cassetta, the yacht has the feel of a Miami villa combined with great functionality. When inside the yacht, guests are never disconnected from the environment. The installation of the windows ensures constant visibility of the water and sky, even from the bed. The effect is particularly stunning in the full-beam owner’s cabin where the windows are oversized and less than half a meter above the water.

Contact Denison yacht broker David Johnson to inquire about the Spritz 102.

About the Interior Department

interior article 01

The interior department onboard a luxury mega yacht is comprised of hospitality specialists, also known as stewardesses. They are responsible for each guest’s experience onboard from the moment they arrive and are greeted with a refreshing cocktail and lavender scented hand towel, to the immaculate and elegant eight course dinner service.

This department is responsible for the following aspects of the yacht operation:

  • guest service on board
  • event planning and entertainment
  • planning and reserving events for guests ashore
  • interior appearance and maintenance
  • financial administration

Working as a stewardess will suit the personality of someone who loves to entertain, whether it be an intimate dinner party in your home or hosting a huge event to celebrate a friend’s birthday party at a private venue. To be a successful stewardess and progress in the industry, it is essential to learn from senior interior crew as this vocation consists of many "tricks of the trade" that must be taught and cannot be learned in a book.

A junior stewardess with no experience will get their first yacht job based on their interpersonal skills, ability to demonstrate strong work ethic and the manner in which they present themselves. They will be expected to work long, hard hours doing the most basic chores onboard to the very highest standards. A keen eye for detail and a passion for perfection are essential. The range of your responsibilities will depend on the yacht size and team.

As you progress as a stewardess you will be given more responsibilities, including guest service, and it is important to supplement your learning onboard with courses in areas you may be lacking, such as wine knowledge, flower arranging or computer skills. The stellar stewardess possesses a wide range of varied skills that allow them to exceed guest expectations in every situation. With at least three years of experience, some stewardesses are ready to take a leadership role aboard yachts as the chief stewardess.

The chief stewardess is a master of ceremonies on board, orchestrating the overall guest experience. There is great satisfaction in throwing a perfect party (guest trips can last up to several days and weeks) and with this responsibility also comes the pressure that every detail be perfect. This role is well suited for people that speak to large groups with confidence and enjoy the spotlight. In the quieter moments computer knowledge, administrative skills and some financial acumen are important.

Blog Master the Art of Yacht Interior Design: The Ultimate Guide for Yacht Owners

Aria Johansson

The Aesthetic Side of the High Seas

When most people think about Yachts, the first image that comes to mind is probably of a shining, sleek exterior slicing through the crystal-clear waters. But for the captains of these crafts, the interior is just as important. Both functional and fashionable, the interior design of your Yacht speaks volumes not just about your personality, but also about your approach to the high-octane boating life. Hence, we’re embarking on a round-the-world tour of Yacht interior design, aiming to inspire and guide Yacht owners to create a truly stunning inner sanctum.

Identifying Your Personal Style

Think dark, exquisite woods, plush upholstered furniture, and refined traditional elements. This style exudes sophistication, elegance, and a sense of timelessness. It often features polished bronze or brass fixtures, intricate detailing, and a muted color palette.

Contemporary

This design style often features clean, smooth lines, a minimalistic approach, and a palette of neutral colors. Lightweight, often recycled materials are commonly used, offering an echo of the sea's constant ebb and flow.

Be Mindful of Materials

With Yachts being exposed to harsh marine conditions, it's crucial to choose materials that can withstand the sea's wrath. Consider marine-grade steel, premium yacht-friendly woods like teak or iroko, and resistant textiles for your upholstery.

Incorporate Functional Design

Remember, a Yacht isn't just a floating showcase. Prioritize practicality and functionality. Incorporate in-built storage solutions and modish-yet-minimalist furniture that doesn’t constrict onboard movement. Remember, it's all about balancing comfort, utility, and luxury.

Consider the Extra Amenities

Designing your Yacht interior is also about planning for luxury amenities. From a full-service bar to a spa-quality bath, the amenities you choose, yet again, echo your personality while elevating the Yacht experience for you and your guests.

Remember: interior design isn't about following trends. It's about creating your own personal sanctuary at sea. ' The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.' said Marcel Proust. So let's open our eyes to new Yacht interiors!

What’s on Trend in Yacht Interior Design for 2021?

NEWS | October 06, 2020

What’s on Trend in Yacht Interior Design for 2021?

Marble and quartz. Light woods. Off whites and soft Champagne color. Japandi. Glass and chrome. Minimalism... The design trends for 2021 borrow from the past while looking toward the future. The teams at Horizon’s two in-house Design Centers discuss the trends they are implementing in both smaller and larger yachts while lending their expertise to styles and looks that will inspire and turn heads in 2021.

1 | THE PALETTE A warm and neutral color palette is the background of the 2021 yacht interior. Unlike the Scandi style that favors pure white, a warm or neutral background complements muted colors and natural hues, like brown and beige. No longer boring and conservative, beige has seen a comeback for providing a serene neutral tone upon which textures and pops of color can add visual interest. Champagnes and other variations of beige add elegance while grey and black accents add drama without being overbearing.

Image 3840: 2132

The 2021 interior design finds common ground between bright and cold colors. Add cooler hues of muted pink, blue and green, warmed up with earthy details and wooden elements. Pops of color can also be introduced, but only when used sporadically so as to not interrupt the harmony of the design.

Image 3841: 3130

2 | NATURAL ELEMENTS Natural, tactile accents are on trend for 2021, so invite nature to join you onboard! Choose high quality furniture constructed of simple and natural materials, such as mid-toned wood with exposed grain. Match furniture with natural, textured fabrics like linen.

Image 3842: 4128

Light woods are a popular material for yacht interiors as they create a comfortable, homey atmosphere. This material can be used not only for flooring, but also for wall coverings and ceilings. Use light, untreated woods to highlight multipurpose spaces.

Image 3843: 5131

When working with a neutral space, texture is key. Add interest by combining different yet complementary materials and textures for a touch of natural simplicity. For warmth, soft, tactile fabrics make a space cozier. Add linen cushions, fuzzy rugs in a plain color, a statement wall art piece in neutral tones, or a living plant to serve as a focalpoint – what better way to achieve the natural look and blend the indoors with the outdoors than with plants and greenery!

Image 3844: 6127

3 | FINISHES Natural elements like wood, metal, glass and stone are the dominant materials in 2021. Coated metals in bronze, iron grey or black lend an unobtrusive, yet refined look, and are swiftly usurping polished stainless steel. Thanks to advances in technology, engineered stone is now a great alternative to natural stone. It is durable, non-porous, and offers a variety of unique patterns and high-contrast veining.

Image 3845: 7127

In the galley, eschew shiny surfaces for relaxing, matte finishes. Only metal accents should shine in this space. Stylish galley designs blend wood with concrete, metal with stone, or glass with artificial materials. It’s also a space where you can have fun, so be bold by combining various textures of one material or similar materials in different colors.

Image 3846: 838

Luxurious head design remains a focus for 2021. White marble or quartz are timeless and sophisticated materials that can be used for flooring and wall coverings as well as countertops, and beautifully complement woods and metal accents for an instantly luxurious look.

4 | HIDDEN FUNCTIONALITY Because space is critical within a yacht’s interior, multifunctional furniture provides flexibility and versatility. A foldable dining table can be transformed to a sofa table or breakfast bar to permit open space for gathering or wider circulation. The hi/lo table can be casual at coffee table height or formal at dining height, and an extendable function fulfills the needs for both intimate family dinners or a large feast. Keep in mind, however, that these pieces should not only be functional and fit the space, but must be visually interesting as well.

Image 3847: 9122

Solid cabinet doors hiding shelves and organizers are also on trend for 2021. Floor-to-ceiling galley cabinets are both functional and stylish, or a modern galley can incorporate low cabinets only for a spacious and luxurious look.

Image 3849: 11114

5 | LIGHTING Never underestimate the importance of lighting in yacht design! Highlight natural lighting wherever possible, taking care to not block windows or incorporate heavy furniture or cabinetry. Incorporate smart technology fiber optic lighting, which offers many advantages, such as being heat free, simple to install, safe, precise, durable and easily maintained. Fiber optic lighting also allows for a variety of colors and programmed settings that can shift from starry night to party mode at the touch of a button.

Image 3850: 1228

Less clutter and cleaner lines define 2021’s look, and simple lighting designs blend perfectly into modern decors. Low-profile fixtures with soft colors and simple geometric designs that follow the Minimalism trend are becoming even more popular. Linear fixtures and track lights also bring harmony and the perfect amount of intentional light to a space.

Image 3851: 1351

6 | MATERIALS Complementing the neutral palette and natural finishes, a textured fabric or wallpaper with contoured lines, vivid patterns or colors remains popular.

Image 3852: 14109

Leather is another preferred and durable material, as it brings a sense of quality and luxury to an interior, holds up against sun exposure and wears well when cared for. Incorporate leather into your interior as an accent piece, a wall covering, or a piece of furniture for that casually elegant look.

Image 3853: 15105

While design preferences differ by market, Modern and Contemporary will be the preferred styles in 2021. Favored in the U.S. market, Modern styling displays bold lines, warm woods and the use of symmetry of space to create a balanced aesthetic. Popular in Europe and Australia, Contemporary styling embraces curved shapes, organic accents and rounded edges. This style welcomes variations and is always evolving, and works well with cooler hues and the latest interior gadgets. Both of these styles successfully execute the simplicity, neutral and natural color palettes, artistic touches and openness described above – perfect for creating a relaxing and luxurious atmosphere on board.

Many brands claim to provide comfort and functionality, but few strike the balance with such finesse as Loro Piana. Its clothing and accessories are made from the world’s finest raw materials and enhanced by innovative in-house engineering — its revolutionary Storm System treatment, for example, will make even the most lavish of fabrics, such as vicuña wool, 100% waterproof.

It’s no surprise, then, that the company is well established in the yachting industry. Loro Piana Yacht Interiors has cleverly adapted to the unpredictable conditions of life at sea without losing an ounce of quality. More than 600 varieties of customisable materials and special blends, including tussah silk woven with wool and horsehair, and fine merino wool blended with linen or silk, are employed in its stylish yet durable wall coverings, cushions, upholstery and light-blocking curtains.

Bottega Veneta

Italian style is no stranger to flamboyance so Bottega Veneta’s subtle and discreet Home Collection is perfect for the superyacht owner who prefers a more muted colour palette. Founded in Vicenza in 1966, Bottega Veneta began producing luxury leather goods in the master craftsman tradition. That approach, rather than trend-driven fashion, has remained the cornerstone of the brand.

In 2006, the year it opened a school dedicated to training the next generation of leather artisans, the company launched its Home Collection. Creative director Tomas Maier started it all in 2001, when he began commissioning bespoke furnishings for select retail stores. The pieces soon attracted the attention of discerning clients but, rather than selling them (as was often requested), Maier promised to make the customers their own versions instead.

Ten years later the Home Collection is now an integral part of Bottega Veneta. It favours modern, functional pieces that bear the trademark intrecciato leather braiding motif. Each item is elegant enough to work as a standalone accessory or as part of a set, and the look suits an onboard setting just as well as one on dry land.

Christian Liaigre

“Offshore is an inhospitable world of wind, waves, rain and ultraviolet light,” designer Guillaume Rolland once said, “so the belly of a boat must be a nest — a place where one escapes all that.” Rolland heads the yacht division of the eponymous company founded by fellow Frenchman Christian Liaigre in 1987. He has been working with Liaigre since 2001, initially involved in all projects within the company, which is known for subtly luxurious furniture and interiors that make an elegant, understated use of natural materials, such as raw linens and woods weathered by the sea.

As the yacht interiors side of the business took off, Rolland, a lifelong sailor who regularly competes in regattas around the world, took charge of the company’s yacht design studio. Projects he has undertaken include Vertigo , a 67 metre sailing yacht that was awarded Sailing Yacht of the Year at the 2012 World Superyacht Awards . With Vertigo , the design studio worked closely with the boat builders from the start, so that the interior was created along with the yacht, rather than just made to fit into it. The design includes glass panels and doors in the cockpit areas that can be made transparent or opaque at the flick of a switch. So escaping the elements — or even your fellow guests — is simple.

Stefano Ricci

Stefano Ricci’s Luxury Yacht Division designs bespoke interiors for some of the most sophisticated vessels in the world. Catering to an elite clientele, its projects are characterised by an elegant finish and sumptuous details, and include the likes of glazed cabinets, handwoven textiles and intricate ornaments with calligraphic patterns. Ricci’s furniture is traditional and ornate, and it’s not immediately obvious that it has been developed for a yacht environment. A recent collaboration with Florence-based designer Luca Dini saw the interior of a mammoth 70 metre superyacht refitted to an almost palatial standard. Utilising the best materials, as is the company’s signature, the interior was furnished in Californian briarwood and Tuscan marble.

Its renowned Home line is similarly plush, represents the finest Italian craftsmanship and has a 100 per cent Made in Italy brief. Nowhere is this clearer than in its recently updated porcelain lines, which blur the boundaries between art and utility. The Lapis Lazuli line gives a contemporary twist to porcelain, featuring deep blue hues and playing up the opulence historically associated with blue by coupling it with 24ct gold detailing.

Pitt-Pollaro

Back in 2012, when Frank Pollaro was commissioned to create a desk for Brad Pitt’s château in the South of France, little did he know a new partnership was about to be forged. On delivering the piece, he noticed the actor’s sketchbook was full of furniture sketches and suggested they make them a reality.

The Pitt-Pollaro Collection is designed by Pitt and crafted by Pollaro. It demonstrates the attention to detail the likes of Robert De Niro have sought out and majors in art deco-inspired pieces in opulent materials, such as the decadent Statuario Venato marble Toi et Moi bath (above, in a limited edition of three), which can accommodate two well-heeled people. Should you require further credentials, Pollaro has designed yacht furniture for tech giant Larry Ellison, and Pitt-Pollaro was one to the top luxury and interiors brands at the Monaco Yacht Show .

Bohemian crystal has been revered for centuries for its high quality and ground-breaking designs. Founded in 2007 to build on this tradition, Lasvit combines artisanal skill with cutting-edge technology to create modern light-sculptures and art installations.

One of its new bespoke creations, Cassia (above) by Petra Krausová offers a flexible approach to interior design. Intended to resemble flowers gently swaying in the wind, its low-hanging, hand-blown glass pendants can either be suspended as a single entity or dispersed individually around a room, to equally striking effect.

Lasvit’s 2016 line also includes the aptly named Candy Collection — a range of table lamps and chandeliers resplendent in playful rainbow stripes – that were designed in collaboration with brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana.

Baldi, founded in Florence in 1867, is dedicated to continuing the rich artistic heritage and tradition of craft that has long been integral to the city. The one-of-a-kind creations of its interior-design arm, Casa Baldi, are imbued with classic Italian style and hand-crafted using the very latest techniques. Its first foray into nautical design saw superyacht Alexander Again transformed into a spectacular floating palace.

Solid Nature

Stunning stone doesn’t begin and end with marble. Solid Nature sources the finest alternatives from across the world for the ultimate in bespoke floors and walls.

Its semi-precious line is perhaps the most extraordinary, comprising as it does those not usually available in large slabs — rose quartz, lapis lazuli, amethyst, malachite and petrified wood, among others. Onyx options, meanwhile, range from a honey hue with white veins to caramel clouds and speckled Maldivian azure, while matte travertine comes in neutral taupe, rusty ochre and gold. If you simply must have marble, there’s an array of colours, from gold-streaked smoky-grey Portoro to yellow moonstone and even zebra stripes.

Dudgeon Sofas

Dudgeon creates bespoke sofas for the luxury residential market. Its relationship with the luxury boat industry was forged in 1992, when a yacht interior designer called into the Knightsbridge showroom on the hunt for Chesterfield sofas. Since then, its team of skilled British craftspeople has gone on to make upholstered sofas and chairs for 86 superyachts, including award-winners such as the 63 metre Benetti 11.11 .

Yacht Interior Designers Guide: To Refit Or Not To Refit Part 2

To be in yachting, you've got to love it and be a little crazy..

Murphy’s Law was written for yacht refits.  If it can break, crack, slip, fall off, tear or just plain wear out, it will on a yacht whether an owner has numerous refit experiences, or is planning his or her first.  Keeping this thought in mind throughout the yacht refit process will help to gain some perspective on the project.

Every little change on a yacht refit affects something else. You may want to move beds, but often beds are used for concealing many different things from structural stringers and floor line to HVAC, plumbing, wiring, and even fuel tanks.

As mentioned in Part 1 of “Yacht Interior Designers Guide: To Refit Or Not To Refit” , it is what you don’t see that can cause unexpected budgetary increases and time delays.

“Even the best-laid plans turn to hell when exposed to reality” -Michael Anthony, Author

I often wish I had a crystal ball to predict all the scenarios one might encounter during a yacht refit;  however, just as no two fingerprints or snowflakes are alike, the same is true for yacht refits! Remember, the better the plan is, the more successful the refit will be.

Something as simple as replacing wall material can be a major project when it is not known how the material was originally installed, how difficult it will be to remove or just how much prep work will be involved.  On the refit we did for the 97’ Hargrave Forever Young , the wall material throughout the entire yacht was pulling away from the walls giving it a bubbled look.

There was no way to know until we started removing the wall panels how much labor would be involved. In some areas the panels were able to be removed in one piece and in others the panels came apart in many pieces pulling off parts of the wall along with them.  The walls had to be patched and door skin applied and sanded in the areas where wall paper would be applied. In the areas where upholstered panels would be reapplied, the walls had to be patched and sanded and panels repaired if necessary, upholstered and re-installed.

Changing out headliner can make one of the biggest impacts because it is the largest surface area. It can brighten up the room and give reflection.  While changing headliner, it is a good time to also change lighting and wiring for audio visual. Plan on changing all of the headliner in an entire room and not just a portion of the room because the color and texture of the headliner will be impossible to match as the color will have changed due to age and sunlight damage.  If furniture that touches the ceiling is being removed, the new furniture must be designed with the same ceiling footprint as the original furniture or furniture with a new soffit larger than the footprint of the original furniture can be designed to avoid changing the headliner if that is not in the plan.

Also on the 97’ Hargrave Forever Young, the Dining Salon forward cabinet was removed, and the wall was re-veneered and finished to match the existing cabinetry.  All of the overhead lighting was changed to LED; however, changing the headliner was not in the budget so it was necessary for us to create a soffit above the new forward cabinet where the old was removed in an effort to save the headliner.

This Owner-driven yacht interior design refit was to refresh our Client’s “new” yacht so he and his family would enjoy spending time aboard and pursue their passion of yachting.  In addition to family-driven requirements, the owner placed limits on the interior refit budget. Even when budget is of primary consideration, an Owner’s objectives can be achieved through effective collaboration and a solid scope of service established at the outset of a refit project.

On the refit of the 142’ Trinity Chevy Toy ,  the original plan was a fairly minor refit to include refinishing of wood and replacement of stone counters and floors, soft goods such as bedding, upholstery, window treatments, carpet, wall coverings, headliner, loose furniture, art and accessories.

In the process of removing the carpet and sound barrier padding, we found mold and mildew on the underside of the padding at each of the seams of the floorboards below. The entire Main Salon floor was rotting from an AC leak that had gone undetected.  The leak came from above, through the walls and under the built in cabinetry and floor.

142' Trinity

The carpet, padding and the yacht’s floating floor system that consisted of a plywood subfloor, “damped” plywood made with layers of rubber sandwiched between the plys of wood,  plywood strips to level and attach the next layer, a foam material used for vibration damping properties and the “damping paste” had to all be removed down to the bare aluminum deck and rebuilt with new materials. The wood baseboards and some cabinetry had to be replaced as well as the entire HVAC system. Thanks to an experienced team and a well designed and choreographed plan of action, we were able to move quickly through this unexpected setback and create the elegant and transitional updated interior that the owner desired.

A yacht refit is always larger than you plan for it to be and will always evolve.

Purchasing a yacht with refit in mind requires a different set of criteria than building a new yacht or purchasing a “like new” brokerage yacht for immediate use.  In some cases, a yacht that seems undesirable as-is can become a wonderful value as a yacht refit prospect.

Even in what appears to be the most simple and straightforward project, there is no way to know for sure if the type of issues described above will arise, but as talked about in Part 1 of “Yacht Interior Designers Guide: To Refit Or Not To Refit” , you can benefit from the knowledge of an experienced team who has no doubt already encountered similar problems and worked out the solutions. The key to successfully refitting a yacht is the effective planning and correct execution of the plan.

Tips for effective planning and correct execution of the refit plan...

Once a realistic budget is determined and how it will be allotted, plan accordingly and engage the appropriate professionals who can ensure that the refit does not expand beyond control. Prior to the start, the owner-designer-captain-shipyard team must be certain of the desired end result. A well defined, clear and detailed project scope will allow for precise specifications to each of the various contractors involved which is necessary to obtain comprehensive quotes. What appears to be a lower priced quote may very well just not be inclusive due to a lack of information.

Just as every little change on a yacht refit will affect something else, each contractor’s work affects another’s.  Weekly on board meetings with all of the contractors involved, as a group, will uncover possible bottlenecks in the process early on that can affect the budget or schedule. Identifying these obstacles will allow for swift reorganization, minimizing lost time.

“Compromise” should be an accepted word in the yacht refit vocabulary.

An owner should be aware of budget and only invest what is redeemable upon resale, unless he plans to keep the refitted yacht for a long period of time.  Every yacht has a maximum value. Some yachts may require too much to bring them up to the owners expectations, both mechanically and aesthetically and perhaps may not be the right yacht to purchase in the first place. However, with the ample resale market we have now there are many options from which to choose!

Are you ready for a refit?

Let us know when you would like to meet to discuss possible options for you or your client!

Inside Luxury Yacht Interiors

The best yacht interior design firms create masterpiece residences perfect for life at sea, complete with custom world-class architecture, interiors, and furnishings. One of the inherent challenges of luxury yacht interior design is incorporating the yacht's structural elements, low ceilings, and oddly-shaped rooms into the design. Supporting rafters in the center of a room, marked security exits, and emergency lighting must be visible but detract from the room's interior design .

These structural challenges turn into wonderful opportunities for a good yacht interior designer. As a full-service yacht interior design firm, Miguel Rueda Designs collaborates with shipyards to have features such as glass walls built into the boat's architecture.

Why Miguel Rueda Designs Is One Of The Best Yacht Interior Designers

Here are some of the reasons why royals, dignitaries, celebrities, and billionaires trust Miguel Rueda Designs to convert their luxury yachts into second homes at sea with Miguel Rueda:

Use of unparalleled craftsmanship and high-quality materials

We go to great lengths to create timeless, elegant interior design solutions for luxury superyachts, sourcing the best textiles and furnishings to create the desired aesthetic. Textiles are essential elements in yacht interior decoration, as the choice of materials reflects the project as a whole. We use textiles of the highest quality to represent luxury and convey the design's soul.

As a luxury yacht interior designer, Miguel Rueda aims for a coordinated look across the interior and exterior spaces, while ensuring that individual spaces are dressed according to their particular features and use.

Best Yacht Interior Designers

Our international clients' eclectic tastes force us to push the boundaries of our style . As such, Miguel Rueda prides himself in not having a single style replicated for each client. Instead, he follows a bespoke design approach to each client's luxury living at sea. Miguel Rueda Designs recreates standard yacht amenities with a creative eye, turning ordinary swimming pools, gyms, entertainment areas, kitchens, bedrooms, and walk-in closets into works of art.

8 Interior Design Firms Making a Splash in the Yacht World

From patricia urquiola to ken fulk, these high-profile designers are nixing traditional yacht interiors for free flowing designs with luxe furnishings., by andrew sessa.

Celebrated architects and decorators known for shore-side projects are increasingly taking to the water, where they’re proving they’re anything but “at sea.” Armed with high-profile yacht commissions, these designers are throwing the cookie-cutter layouts and tired aesthetic tropes of typical marine interiors overboard. Instead, they’re employing floorplans that flow more gracefully, luxe furnishings and blue-chip art that would feel at home in the most sophisticated urban pied-à-terre.

The force of this shift could be felt at September’s Monaco Boat Show, where new designers brought an outsider’s eye to the industry. One especially envelope-pushing case in point: Oceanco recently began an initiative to reimagine the super yacht from top to bottom, tapping forward-thinking Dutch interiors studio Tank as well as former Rolls-Royce design lead Giles Taylor to make it happen. While we wait to see, and sail on, what they’ll create, we’ve gathered an elite crew of star decorators, many brand-new to the life aquatic, whose genre-changing work is on the water right now.

This studio launched its superyacht arm, Njord , in 2020 to meet the needs of residential clients spending more time on the water during the pandemic. “They loved their yachts for a week or two, but the boats didn’t feel like home when you lived on them for months,” says cofounder and creative director Marie Soliman-Berglund, whose team set out to give the vessels that special ambience. Apart from adding decadent details such as decks from French flooring purveyor Oscar Ono and cutting-edge air-filtration technology, Njord created taller rooms, or the illusion thereof. The main saloon on the 249-foot Eden features a metallic fabric overhead and an opening to the floor above. Combined, the interventions give the space a “sense of height and elegance” that’s tricky to achieve in a ship’s tight quarters.

Patricia Urquiola

Italian yard Sanlorenzo recently built upon its award-winning aesthetic credentials by enlisting Spanish-born Urquiola for an ongoing collaboration. Featuring a travertine-encased central staircase of bronzed steel and oak and pieces from Urquiola’s own furniture collections, SD96 puts a refreshing focus on flowing spaces and open views. “I like working on projects where the client asks you to do something you’ve never done before,” says Urquiola, who notes that being “a beginner in the industry helped me propose my personal way of experiencing the boat, making sure that the usual comfort of a home is replicated in a smaller space.”

Bryan O’Sullivan Studio

Lauded for his recent work with Maybourne Hotels —including London’s Connaught , Berkeley and Claridge’s —the Irish-born O’Sullivan crafts superyacht interiors that incorporate his signature mix of custom pieces, midcentury furniture, curated artworks, rich textures and colorful accents. His 164-foot Mosaique and 221-foot Icon impress with such atypical nautical furnishings as a one-ton serpeggiante -marble soaking tub, a Vladimir Kagan glass-topped coffee table and curving sofa, Pierre Chareau lighting and custom pieces from Apparatus. Currently he’s at work on the full refit of a 230-foot yacht and annual updates to Icon .

Peter Mikic

Mikic , a former fashion designer, actually made his interiors debut at sea, crafting elements for London property developers the Candy brothers’ yacht in 2006, which led Elisabeth Murdoch to commission Mikic to decorate her entire 159-foot Elisabeth F. two years later. “I designed it in a way that was like an apartment,” he recalls of the vessel, which won awards at both the Monaco and Antigua boat shows. “I had almost no built-in furniture, which is crazy.” Today he continues to buck marine norms. Combining classic elegance with playful colors, patterns and textures, he gave a 109.5-foot yacht a bachelor-pad feel, and he’s now putting sheepskin-clad Fritz Hansen chairs and tufted boucle sofas on a 195-foot sailing yacht alongside contemporary British artworks by the likes of Bridget Riley.

Yale School of Architecture grads Eric Clough and Eun Sun Chun—whose projects include a 6,000-square-foot Houston penthouse and more than 150 Christian Louboutin boutiques— recently completed their first marine commission, a refit of Monte Carlo Yachts’ 105-foot MCY 105 for a client in Hong Kong. Chun and Clough selected surprisingly seaworthy fabrics from Loro Piana and Hermès , furniture by Blackman Cruz and Carl Hansen and lighting from the Urban Electric Co. One particularly homelike vignette finds classic Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs surrounding a French-walnut dining table under an abstract painting by Laurent Hours.

Foley & Cox

Founding principal Michael Cox and design director Zunilda Madera bring an acute appreciation of luxe details to yacht interiors (thanks in no small part to the decade Cox spent with Ralph Lauren ’s home brands). For the 152.5-foot vessel of a client whose homes in Monaco and Austria they decorated, the duo combined custom furniture from DeAngelis —including plush upholstered sofas with a depth and a softness that defy at-sea expectations—with finds from the Paris Flea Market . These idiosyncratic pieces, they say, bring a collected, eclectic patina to the yacht, reflecting the client’s personality.

Ken Fulk Halekai Deck

A consummate showman, Fulk just completed his first yacht interior, a wooden sailing vessel for longtime clients. It combines historic inspiration with whimsical contemporary twists. The ship’s name, Halekai, means “home on the sea” in Hawaiian, which points to the state of mind of both clients and design team. With Honolulu’s Iolani Palace as a jumping-off point, Fulk combined the European and the indigenous, creating such evocative details as carved teak doors and custom marquetry in teak and koa wood and embroidered headboards based on a royal Hawaiian wedding quilt.

Tara Bernerd

Known for designing hotels and restaurants from Chicago to Osaka, Bernerd first brought her signature industrial élan and masculine edge to the sea nearly a decade ago. “Yacht interiors so often veer towards the traditional,” she says. “We’ve sought to bring a fresh, contemporary, sporty feel with pale washed woods and beautiful linens mixed with textured fabrics.” On a just-completed 102-foot Sanlorenzo yacht, marble insets adorn built-in cupboards while panels of green onyx clad a bathroom’s walls and the front of the glam below-deck bar.

Yacht Interior Design: A Journey into Opulent Luxury

Stepping aboard a yacht is an invitation to immerse oneself in extravagant elegance. Yacht interior designers have mastered the art of crafting extraordinary spaces that redefine lavishness. With meticulously selected furnishings and intricate detailing, every aspect is designed to radiate sophistication and grandeur.

Dissolving the Divisions Between Indoor and Outdoor Spaces

Yacht interior design trends this year focus on the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. Glass doors that slide away, retractable walls, and expansive windows dissolve the barriers between the yacht's interior and the breathtaking vistas outside. Guests can revel in the beauty of the ocean while enjoying the comforts and luxuries of the interior, creating an immersive experience that transcends traditional boundaries.

Eco-consciousness

Preserving the Environment through Considered Design

The importance of sustainability is at the forefront of yacht interior design. Designers are integrating earth-friendly materials and sustainable practices to create environmentally conscious spaces. The use of responsibly sourced hardwoods, recycled materials, and organic fabrics like linen and hemp reflect a commitment to environmental preservation. The addition of living green walls and indoor plants not only adds a touch of nature but also enhances onboard wellbeing.

Modern Minimalism

A Harmonious Blend of Simplicity and Functionality

Modern minimalism has found its place in yacht interiors, beautifully blending simplicity and practicality. Clean lines, clutter-free spaces, and a neutral colour palette cultivate an atmosphere of tranquillity. Smart storage solutions and advanced technology ensure a serene environment, focusing attention on the captivating ocean views and the play of natural light within the yacht's interior.

Innovative Tech

Elevating the Onboard Experience

Advancements in technology continue to shape yacht interiors, enhancing both the comfort and entertainment experiences on board. From smart lighting systems and automated controls to immersive audio-visual setups, yacht owners can now enjoy a seamless blend of luxury and cutting-edge technology. Integration of touch-screen interfaces, voice-controlled systems, and IoT connectivity allows passengers to control various aspects of the yacht's environment with ease.

The world of yacht interior design is constantly evolving, reflecting the changing preferences and aspirations of yacht enthusiasts. This year's trends celebrate the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, the use of sustainable materials, contemporary minimalism, personalised artistic statements, and state-of-the-art technology. As yacht designers push boundaries and unleash their creativity, the interiors of these floating sanctuaries continue to redefine luxury, providing an unmatched experience on the high seas.

Yacht Interior Design Trends & Insights

what is a yacht interior specialist

Designing the interior of a yacht is as different from designing a house as a tiny waterfall is from Niagara. The traditional house, for example, never rolls, nor does it need protection from engine vibration, plus boats have challenging room sizes and shapes. Most houses, barring a calamity, are never faced with corrosive salt air and high humidity, nor do they have to meet maritime codes and U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Interior designing a yacht is not for the faint of heart.

Tampa-based interior designer Susan Winchester, of Susan Winchester Design , underlines just one of the challenges: “Every inch counts.” Among other nautical projects, Winchester has designed more than 30 yacht interiors for Marlow Yachts of Palmetto, which builds yachts from 49 to 86 feet.

what is a yacht interior specialist

Another Tampa designer with an extensive yacht portfolio, Angie Wetzel, of InterLux Interiors , agrees, adding, “Yacht design has a lot of constraints and minimal flexibility.”

An award-winning interior designer for large yachts (as well as homes and business jets), Patrick Knowles, of Patrick Knowles Designs , loves originality and finds boat designs to be a creative challenge: “When I’m talking with a new client, I’m always thinking, please, please ask me to do something I’ve never done before.”

Where do boat owners go wrong with interior design? Wetzel is clear: “Boat owners over-personalize it. They want to put their stamp on everything and see their initials or monograms everywhere. When you own a yacht, you want to make it unique and exclusively for you. But consider the balance between what you like and what the market might like when you want to sell the yacht.”

Winchester is equally succinct: “Too much of anything. Color, novelties, décor and furniture. The antithesis of calm. You need room to breathe.”

What are the trends in yacht interiors? Wetzel picks two areas. First is transparency: “Glass is a trend in superstructures that creates the feeling of wider spaces, evoking a harmony between interior and exterior.” She also points to mid-century modern styling, with “materials such as wood, brass, leather and velvet adding a mid-century touch, creating a soft and gentle atmosphere for owners and guests.”

Winchester takes another slant, “Performance fabrics, inside and out. They have come a long way and are more livable, comfortable and colorful than ever. They aren’t just flat weaves anymore; they are sumptuous velours and velvets that can stand up to almost anything you dish out.” She adds, “Outdoor spaces have been a bit of an afterthought. Today, we need those spaces for the restoration of our mind, body and soul. Outdoor living is front and center, regardless of the climate.”

For Knowles, new types of LED lighting can create drama. “A room will continue to evolve, from the use of space and how the lighting changes from day to night. Lighting can become art — but so can shadows. I like to play with both to find the right aesthetic for the space.”

He paints a picture: “Imagine that perfect moment when you awaken in the morning and light beams of diffused natural sunlight are coming in through the windows. You can see the warm tones as they interact with the wood. The space feels maximized, light and bright. Yet 12 hours later, as natural light dims, the aesthetic changes. The shadows make the space more intimate. Strategic mood lighting can change the entire space.”

Any hot colors or materials emerging right now? Winchester is clear: “Richer, brighter, jewel tones. I like to keep things calm, clean and cozy, so I use the bolder colored fabrics as accents with more organic, neutral, grounded colors.”

Knowles notes, “I love natural stone. However, maintenance can be a bit challenging. I sometimes reserve applications that are less demanding for natural stone and specify quartz materials on surfaces that take the brunt of harsh compounds, such as toothpaste, aftershave and body gels. The combination of man-made durability with that of the incomparable beauty of nature is nothing short of stunning.”

As for Wetzel, “I’m inspired by different things every day. I embrace different styles and see every project as a blank canvas. I often go for modern and monochromatic, with simple clean lines and rich details. I love using strong, natural materials and matching them together.”

What are your favorite projects? When we asked our designers about their favorite projects, there was some serious hedging. For Winchester, “That’s like asking which one of my kids is my favorite.” Knowles picked his latest, a 94-foot sportfisher from Rybovich named III Amigos.

Wetzel went with a recent Sanlorenzo SL88 : “Every element – bespoke furniture, furnishing and finishings to lighting and architectural structures – was built from scratch. As a designer, it was very important to keep pushing the creative vision, as well as the technical boundaries. I was able to be as creative and as innovative as I could, and the collaboration with Sanlorenzo Yachts was phenomenal.”

What has been your most difficult yacht project? Winchester pointed out a problem area: “When clients are not on the same page with each other. But it’s most rewarding when I can bring them together to create their sanctuary.”

For Wetzel, it was the redesign of interiors: “Working around the existing can be challenging, especially when the expectation is high and the budget is low. Was it fun? Always.”

Knowles offers excellent closing advice: “Remember that the yacht design process should feel like a luxury and not a stress on the owner. The right designer will guide you, listen to you and work with you as a partner to develop and create the ideal yacht for your needs.”

Chris Caswell is an award-winning writer and the former editor of several yachting magazines. He has appeared on Oprah as a boating lifestyle expert and hosted the Marine Voyager series on the Speed Channel.

Getting Started

Based on his experience as an internationally award winning designer, Patrick Knowles Designs (PKD) offers two sets of questions for owners considering interior design or redesign.

what is a yacht interior specialist

5 Questions To Ask Yourself

1. Have I set a proper budget I would like the designer to meet?

2. Have I done some research to consider styles and designs I may like?

3. What will be the main use of my yacht? Is it mainly for family travel, long-range expeditions, charters, easy luxury travel or other uses?

4. What components of the yachting experience are most important to me?

5. What specialty items, like high-end art or a wine collection, will be housed in my yacht?

10 Questions To Ask The Designer

1. Why should I hire a yacht designer instead of an interior designer?

2. What is your design process and how will the project management be structured?

3. How often will we be in touch regarding the process and design?

4. What if I don’t know what design style I want at all? Are you able to help guide me?

5. Do you have vendors and contractors you have worked with previously and will you provide examples of their work before adding them to a project?

6. Can you provide photos and videos of your previous projects in a similar style to what I am looking for?

7. Are you able to show me examples of storage innovations, technical innovations and creative space planning from your previous projects?

8. Can you integrate a specific furniture piece or certain accessories into the design?

9. Beyond interior design, what other services do you offer? (PKD offers designed and manufactured custom furnishing, hardware, china and flatware, crew uniforms and more.)

10. What does the budget look like and how will additional purchases for the project be handled?

Starting a Career in Yachts as an Interior Designer

Discussion in ' Education ' started by grykara , Apr 18, 2017 .

Hello everyone, I am an interior architecture graduate who wants to start a career in yacht industry. Currently I am about to finish my education in industrial design MA. I gathered my portfolio, prepared my CV. But I don't know where to begin with as soon as I graduate. I couldn't find anything on yachts when I search online for interior architecture related jobs. What kind of way I should look for? I am simply unexperienced to know where to go on that level. Also I can send my portfolio and CV to help you determine what I might need to do. Thank you everyone, cheers.

Yacht interior design is not a very big industry. Just google "interior design yacht" and contact the companies that come up. There are usually two types of companies that do interior design for yachts. The do it all yacht design firms and the interior design specialists. The interior design specialty companies often also do building and airplane interiors. Bigger boat builders will also have their own in house design teams and may have interior designers.
