Over the last decade or so, there has been an increasing emphasis on sailing kit designed specifically for women, including women’s boating shoes.

This is great news as, while some pieces of kit such as lifejackets are reasonably acceptable in unisex form, traditional leather deck shoes designed for men  are often impractical and a poor fit for women sailors.

As one of the most essential items of sailing kit, before choosing a pair of women’s boating shoes, it’s therefore worth looking at the many different styles and options available.

While budget is often a starting point in a decision-making process, it’s not always a case of spending the most, but more about what how you will be using the shoes, and how they fit when worn.

For relaxed sailing a good quality pair of traditional style leather deck/boat shoes is still popular, as they are both practical while sailing, non-marking on deck, but also look good and are comfortable to wear on shore.

For more active crew work, racing, and wetter keelboats, there are now many women’s designs of technical sailing trainers/sneakers. These are generally lightweight, supportive and snug fitting, while most sailing trainers are also self-draining/quick drying. Be wary, however, of prolonged wear on land as the super-grippy soles often wear down quickly if walking on rough ground.

9 of the best women’s boat shoes

Gill pursuit trainer.

With 45 years of marine footwear development to its name, Gill knows a thing or two about sailors’ technical requirements. The Pursuit Trainers are designed for ultimate comfort, with a lightweight design, and smart water drainage system, that showcases the company’s latest sailing shoe innovations.

The outsoles are molded using a non-slip compound to work in both wet and dry conditions, while the insoles have been designed with impact-absorbing qualities. They also feature a quick-lace adjustment system to ensure a secure fit.

Musto ladies dynamic pro ii adapt.

Musto has worked hard to produce sailing shoes that provide ultimate stability on deck. Thanks to their construction of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) welded overlay in the uppers, there is plenty of lateral support in the Dynamic Pro II Adapt shoes, as well as shock absorbing heel cages for a secure, comfortable fit.

For extra confidence and comfort when the deck is wet, these shoes feature Musto’s GripDeck rubber and GripFlex tread on the soles, and mono mesh upper fabric, which offers good ventilation and is quick drying.

These shoes also features XPL drainage – a technology designed to disperse and divert water away from areas prone to water ingress.

Wuzzos Whitaker

If you are looking for a pair of practical, yet extremely stylish hand-sewn leather deck shoes, Wuzzos Whitaker Boat Shoes should definitely be a consideration. What’s more, they can also be personalised.

As well as good looks, and day-long comfort, these shoes feature Wuzzos’ standard stitched and bonded, performance UV-repelling rubber, non-marking soles with striped treads that offer excellent grip on deck.

Like all quality deck shoes, the leather laces run continuously around the top of the shoe with the 360-degree lacing system. The Wuzzos leather is also infused with ‘Micro-Fresh’ – a smart antimicrobial technology that offers antifungal and antibacterial protection.

With exceptional attention to detail in its design and technology, it’s hardly surprising Wuzzos are the preferred brand for personalized/branded deck shoes at Yacht Club de Monaco, Fairline Yachts and a growing list of superyacht teams.

Personalisation is simple. Just click the box when ordering and you will be guided through the process.

These ultra-lightweight, sneaker-style deck shoes have been designed to ‘keep you glued on board’ thanks to ultra-high grip soles from Zhik’s non-marking proprietary ‘ZK Soles’.

They also look good and, for the super-active sailor, are ultra-lightweight yet tough-looking, comfortable and have a built-in drainage system.

According to Zhik, the ‘one-way’ drainage system within the soles of these shoes are created by molded channels cast into the mid-soles, which instantly channels water away from underfoot for grip, but doesn’t let it back in when water is running across the deck.

The construction of strong, perforated mesh upper fabric makes the Zhik Fuze breathable and quick drying. Inside the shoes, antibacterial coating has been added to the fast-drying inner liners.

For extra protection when the going gets tough, there is PU reinforcement in the upper, heel and toe areas.

Decathlon Cruise 100

For an exceptionally good value pair of practical, moccasin-style boat shoes, you can’t go far wrong with Decathlon’s Cruise 100 Women’s Leather Boat Shoes.

Marketed within Decathlon’s Tribord sailing range of products, the Cruise 100 are lightweight and offer comfort for active summer sailing.

They have all the features expected of functional boat shoes including non-marking and non-slip micro-grooved natural rubber outsoles.

The uppers are made from a combination of split leather and thin lightweight mesh, which aids breathability, while detachable cotton insoles help to keep things fresh!

As an endorsement of its functionality, Decathlon say the 100 design ‘has been tested and validated throughout its design phase by the Tribord sailing team in calm to variable sailing conditions (choppy water, small swell, average wind speed of Force 5), in warm and sunny weather (average outdoor temperature of 25°C).

‘These tests on the level of grip during use were carried out mainly on a Figaro and an Open 5.70, in different positions (helmsman, pitman, trimmer, midbowman).’

Chatham Pentle G2

The Pentle shoes in Chatham’s G2 collection are among the company’s best sellers. They are sturdy-looking classic leather boat shoes and offer all the style and comfort associated with the Chatham brand.

One of key features of this pair of boat shoes is Chatham’s internal Sole Spring – a tri density comfort technology used to enhance comfort and give plenty of absorption.

The shoes are also anti-bacterial. To achieve this Chatham uses an open cell polyurethane, which allows the material to breathe, and the moisture to wick away.

For the classic look, the Pentle shoes are available in walnut nubuck leather with triple-eyelets, side lacing, contrast stitching and the all-important non-slip and non-marking soles.

Dubarry Aruba

The popular Aruba shoes are one of Dubarry’s latest styles from the women’s range of this tried and trusted brand. Performance features of the Aruba include Dubarry’s non-slip, non-marking slim rubber outsoles, and the company’s signature Port and Starboard flash trims.

Constructed of soft nubuck leather, which is protected with a water-resistant ‘DryFast-DrySoft’ finish, these shoes are designed to contend with all conditions.

They are also available in a whole range of bold colours so, for the fashion-aware sailor, these are definitely a pair of women’s sailing shoes to consider.

Orca Bay Creek

The Orca Bay Creek in Sand are a quality pair of classic design shoes that have been tweaked to appeal to style-conscious female sailors.

As well as their good looks in premium oiled nubuck leather, they are hugely practical with high compound, non-slip/non-marking rubber soles and rawhide leather laces that have undergone a process to increase longevity.

Thanks to the cushioned EVA heel cups (ethylene vinyl acetate – which is a rubber-like plastic that is particularly durable), the Orca Bay Creek offer plenty of day-long comfort.

Sebago Nina Suede Bala

For a real feminine look, nothing shouts style like a pair of Sebagos. The recently-launched, hand-sewn, Nina Suede Bala Moccasins are designed around a slimmer female foot.

The short vamp (the front part of the shoe’s upper) makes them really eye-catching, although those with wide feet should definitely ‘try before they buy’.

Made of full grain leather and soft suede, the Nina shoes come with leather sock linings, a 360° rawhide lace system and thin, elegant non-marking anti slip siped rubber soles.

What to look for in women’s boat shoes

Desire to wear – Comfort is extremely important, so try on as many pairs as you can before you make a purchase. Synthetic trainer-style shoes tend not to stretch after use so if you are going down the ‘trainer’ route, choose a size that fits well initially.

With quality-made leather deck shoes such as Wuzzos and Orca Bay, which have thicker leather and no synthetic lining, will mold nicely to your foot with wear. If that’s the fit you’re looking for, choose a pair that fits more snugly instead of the ‘next size up’, because the leather will soon soften around your foot.

Style v practicality – As well as looking good, bear in mind practicalities. For hardcore sailing, boat shoes need to fit securely around the foot so they don’t come off when scrambling across the deck in slippery, wet conditions.

Ideally, leather deck shoes should have what is known as a 360 degree lacing system where each shoe uses one continuous lace threaded along the side to the front tie eyelets to allow fine tuning for a snug fit.

Safety – Staying safe on deck/around the dockside is essential so choose a pair of women’s sailing shoes specifically designed for sailing with good grip. Make sure also they have non-marking soles.

Boat shoes were originally designed with a soft-soled tread that provides traction on slippery surfaces without leaving scuff marks. Of course, boat shoes have since been woven into summertime and vacation wardrobes beyond boating thanks to their association with sophistication and laid-back warm-weather style. Today, most boat shoes still provide a soft sole and additional traction that makes them a great alternative to sandals or flip-flops, especially if you plan to go directly from the pool deck to a more formal environment while on vacation. Our favorite is the classic and comfortable Sperry Authentic Original Two-eye Boat Shoe, thanks to its soft-sided but durable rubber sole and timeless look.

We spoke to a handful of podiatrists and footwear experts to get their tips on exactly what to look for in boat shoes and which brands they recommend when it comes to quality, affordability, and style.

Best Overall

Sperry women's original two-eye boat shoe.

This classic pair of boat shoes will always be in style thanks to the sophisticated neutral-hued leather material and soft-sided but durable rubber sole.

The leather material might be too hot in warmer climates.

The Sperry Women's Authentic Original Two-eye Boat Shoe will always be our top pick when it comes to deckside footwear. An Americana summer staple, these boat shoes pack a serious punch in both the style and quality departments. The classic silhouette and water-resistant leather material make this option a particularly good choice for anyone hoping to pack just one pair of shoes that can easily take them from the pool deck to dinner and drinks without appearing overly casual.

This option is also a smart pick for those in search of a summer-appropriate shoe that offers more foot support than a flip-flop or sandal. The rubber sole features shock-absorbing support while the perforated, cushioned footbed provides even further comfort and arch support for long days on your feet.

The Details: Leather, rubber | 5 to 12 | 1.7 pounds | Waterproof

Best Budget

Roxy women's ahoy slip-on boat shoe sneaker.

You don’t have to spend a ton to get a high-end-looking summer shoe, and this lightweight and comfortable canvas boat shoe is proof of that.

This option tends to run large, so you might have to size down.

Leather boat shoes are great, but a canvas and rubber option will be much more affordable and can look just as sophisticated as the more expensive alternative. The Roxy Women's Ahoy Slip-on Boat Shoe Sneaker is one of our favorite budget-friendly options for a number of reasons. The lightweight canvas material is much more breathable and weather-appropriate for hot summer days while the memory foam interior and recycled terry cloth lining help ensure your feet are comfortable and cool all day long.

The Details: Canvas, rubber | 5 to 11 | 1.15 pounds | Not waterproof

Best for Walking

Skechers women's go walk lite boat shoe.

This option might look like a classic boat shoe, but the lightweight sneaker was designed to suit city travelers who need something with enough support to wear walking around all day.

The laces are not adjustable and might be too loose for smaller feet.

Looking for a boat shoe silhouette but don’t want to forego optimal foot support? The Skechers Women's Go Walk Lite Boat Shoe features a laundry list of perks that make it an excellent option for those who tend to walk tens of thousands of steps while on vacation. The lightweight design features a responsive 5Gen cushioning for protecting your feet while wandering through city streets as well as a Skechers Goga Max high-rebound insole and a soft fabric lining so you won’t have to worry about uncomfortable rubbing or blisters.

The Details: Textile, rubber | 5 to 12 | 10 ounces | Not waterproof

Sperry Women's Angelfish Boat Shoe

This modern boat shoe offers a much more feminine and elegant silhouette than higher-top alternatives and can easily be paired with dresses and skirts.

The low-top design might not be comfortable for those with wider feet.

The boat shoe silhouette is one of the most versatile options to bring on vacation — but this low-top alternative is an even better option for women who plan to wear it with dresses or skirts. The shorter-cut kicks are much more elegant than high-top boat shoes, which makes them easy to pair with your entire vacation wardrobe without sacrificing comfort or support. This model also comes with a molded EVA midsole that provides all-day cushioning and proper arch support.

Materials: Leather, rubber | 5 to 12 | 1 pound | Not waterproof

Most Breathable

Betrue lightweight boat shoes for women.

This pair of casual boat shoes is made from an ultra-lightweight canvas material that will allow your feet to breathe even in warmer climates or hot summer afternoons.

The slip-on design is much more casual than a more classic boat shoe.

Although leather boat shoes offer a sophisticated and versatile vacation staple, they might be too warm or tight-fitting for those who run hot or experience swelling while in warmer climates . This canvas and rubber alternative is an excellent option for travelers looking for a breathable and lightweight shoe that is easy to slip on and off even after hours of wear. The honeycomb air vent insole and mesh upper were designed to push air through the shoes to keep your feet dry and cool throughout the day.

The Details: Canvas, rubber | 6 to 11 | 1.04 pounds | Not waterproof

Best Waterproof

Sperry women's authentic original float boat shoe.

This pair of fully rubber boat shoes floats just in case you lose them in the water.

This option might not be the best for wearing in formal settings or in the city.

The Sperry Women's Authentic Original Float Boat Shoe offers a happy compromise between boat shoes and more typical sandal-style footwear; think of it as a slightly more elevated version of a Croc sandal. The rubber design is fully waterproof and can double as a water shoe when needed, while the super lightweight design was made to float on top of the water just in case you lose your shoes in the pool or ocean. We also love that the molded treads offer surprisingly good traction and grip even on wet and slippery pool decks.

The Details: Rubber | 5 to 12 | 2 pounds | Waterproof

Most Durable

Twisted x slip-on boat shoe.

This slip-on boat shoe is crafted from extremely durable recycled material and is an excellent option for those looking for a sustainable alternative.

The colorful design is not very versatile and might be hard to pair with your existing wardrobe.

Boat shoes go through a lot throughout the course of their lifetime, which is why it’s so vital to opt for a pair that'll last you for years to come. The Twisted X Slip-on Boat Shoe can go the distance thanks to the high-quality leather, tweed, and rubber material. Even better, this option was crafted using sustainable and recycled materials so it won’t just last you a long time — it has actually saved post-consumer trash from ending up in the landfill. The colorful red and orange print might be a little loud for some, but it can easily be paired with neutral colors like browns, beiges, and even black or white.

The Details: ecoTWX tweed, leather, rubber | 5.5 to 11 | 1.3 pounds | Not waterproof

Best for Wide Feet

Hey dude wendy loafers.

This minimalist option is breathable and spacious with additional width to accommodate for wider feet or those whose feet get swollen in warmer climates.

The contrasting white sole makes this option look more like a sneaker than a traditional boat shoe.

Shopping for boat shoes can be difficult when you have wide feet, or if your feet tend to swell in warmer climates or after a long day of walking around. That’s where the Hey Dude Women's Wendy Shoes comes in. This minimalist option offers the same style and comfort as a more traditional boat shoe but it was made with a little extra room on the sides to accommodate wider feet. It also includes a unique rounded toe design that flexes and folds as needed in order to provide more room in the front of the shoe without sacrificing proper arch support and cushioning.

The Details: Cotton, rubber | 5 to 11 | 2 pounds | Not waterproof

Best Splurge

Timberland heritage noreen boat shoe.

This stylish and on-trend option is well worth the investment if you’re looking for a unique and city-appropriate alternative.

This option isn’t water-resistant and might not be the best for waterside escapes.

There’s something to be said about a reimagined platform boat shoe. The Timberland Heritage Noreen Boat Shoe might not be the best option if you’re looking for a practical and water-friendly shoe to bring to a pool deck or beach — but it will pack a serious punch when it comes to stylish city dressing. What’s more, the stunning shoe also shines in the sustainability department. At least 50 percent of the leather was sourced from tanneries that have achieved a Leather Working Group silver rating (this encompasses energy use, waste production, and water treatment).

The Details: Leather, rubber | 6 to 11 | Not waterproof

Most Versatile

Columbia women’s dorado boat shoe.

They look more like a tennis shoe and can be worn for just about any occasion.

They aren't water-resistant, but they are water-repellent and dry quickly.

If the style of traditional boat shoes isn't your thing, consider the Dorado PFG Boat Shoe from Columbia. It looks just like an everyday tennis shoe while still providing the no-slip grip that other boat shoes offer. These shoes feature a mesh and synthetic upper that is both breathable and lightweight and a Techlite midsole for extra cushioning and arch-support. While they aren't water-resistant, the textile fabric does repel water, so you're safe to wander on deck or on a dock without suffering with wet feet for the rest of the day. They also come in four cute colors, so you can find the perfect pair to match your style.

The Details: Textile, rubber | 5 to 12 | 9 ounces | Waterproof

Tips for Buying Boat Shoes

Choose the best material.

According to Dr. Patrick McEneaney, owner and CEO of Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, the material you choose for your boat shoes should be breathable, first and foremost. “Some of the materials are very dense and very thick and don't have a lot of give to them which can cause your toes to rub, especially if you have bunions or hammer toes,” he explains. “Some of the fabrics are a little looser and there's actually a little more stretch to them, kind of like you'd find with a leather shoe where it'll actually stretch over time. Some of these fabrics are very tightly woven, which won't stretch and other ones will.”

Prioritize comfort

“Most boat shoes don't have a ton of support to them. But some of them are as flimsy as a bedroom slipper while some have some support built into them,” explains McEneaney. “So I like to see a little bit of bend in the shoe and not have as much bend in the midsole.”

Look for shoes with great traction

If you're actually going to be boating, it's important to buy shoes that are designed for that function, not just what looks cute and fashionable. Be sure your boat shoes offer an appropriate amount of traction to ensure you'll remain safe while onboard, and look for soft rubber soles that won't damage the boat, either.

Dr. Patrick McEneaney, owner and CEO, Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists

“Don't assume your running shoes or tennis shoes will do the job on a slippery boat deck. It's one thing to be a tourist on a river cruise; it's another thing to be responsible for helping to steer a sailboat. Those environments are totally different, and you'll only be helping yourself by having the right footwear.”

Keeping boat shoes in clean and like-new condition isn’t all that difficult. Most boat shoes are quick-drying or water-resistant so all you’ll need to do is take a little water and dish soap to the upper material before letting the shoes air-dry. You can also remove the insole in most boat shoe styles before wiping them down with some soapy water and hanging to dry.

If your boat shoes are made of leather, you may also consider regularly applying leather conditioner, especially after they've gotten wet, to prevent cracking.

Boat shoes are designed to be worn without socks for a classic maritime look — but these days, it’s totally fine to wear socks with your boat shoes for a more city-appropriate style. A good pair of no-show socks might also reduce friction if you’re worried about rubbing causing blisters.

Although most boat shoes have laces on the upper and around the exterior of the shoe, boat shoes are designed to fit loosely but shouldn't feel like they’re going to fall off. You should be able to slip your boat shoes on and off without having to unlace them each time.

Most boat shoes, especially those made of leather, can use some breaking in to get the most comfortable fit. You should consult your manufacturer's instructions on breaking in since for many pairs, including Sperry's , the break in process can take weeks. Before you wear your new pair of shoes for long periods of time, you should consider wearing around your house so they can mold to your feet. If they feel a bit tight, you can also wear them with a pair of socks to help them stretch.

When you begin looking for the best women's water shoes to buy, you want to be sure you're getting a pair that's suited to your activities and preferences, whether you need a sleek pair for going from boat to bar; a rugged, sturdy option for crossing rocky, raging rivers; or something with grippy soles for paddleboarding. Luckily, the design and function of water shoes have moved beyond the mesh-topped, slip-on ones of your camp days as a kid to come in multiple styles and price points.

To make the search as easy as possible, we researched the best options based on specific styles, activities, and key features. We then sent our 17 top picks to our network of testers, who rated them based on comfort, drainage, durability, traction, and overall value.

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, dlgjpa women’s quick-drying water shoes.

Very comfortable and snug

Excellent drainage and evaporation properties

Great grip over different terrain

Nothing yet

Earning top marks from our testers are the DLGJPA Quick Drying Water Shoes. Two factors are crucial to a good pair of water shoes—protective traction and quick drying. This shoe excelled at both. The shoe's quick drying ability comes from a hydrophobic engineered mesh upper and fluid-flow technology, which releases water from the upper to the outsole.

Our testers wore this shoe for swimming, and from totally submerged out to sand and concrete, there were no issues. Anti-slip outsole technology helps boost traction on slick surfaces. "These shoes protect your feet on sand, concrete, and any terrain, really," a tester concluded. "They dry fast and feel like normal sneakers."

Best Budget

Aleader women's slip-on water shoes.

Very comfortable

Performed well on and off the beach

Easy to adjust fit

Water expulsion could be better

Aleader is a California-based shoe brand founded in 2013. And its budget water shoes impressed our testers, especially with their athletic fit and feel. The Mesh Slip-On Water Shoes have a hydrophobic mesh upper, adjustable laces (no tying!), and a water drain outsole. "These fit like an athletic shoe and were great for walking on pavement and sand," one tester reported. "If I needed to run or move swiftly, this shoe would be able to provide the proper support."

The one drawback to these shoes is our testers didn't think they drained as well as other shoes. "Despite the shoe holding onto the water and not drying as quickly, the price is great," one tester concluded.

Best Hiking

Keen women’s solr high-performance sport sandals.

KEEN Footwear

Hiking-boot feel

Solid performance on multiple surfaces

Quick drying

Small debris got inside

Keen is known for supportive shoes that give wearers excellent traction on surfaces that might not offer a ton of grip on their own—and this hiking sandal gets top marks from the outdoor experts. "I love that this shoe is lightweight, and it gives good traction to help you keep your balance on wet, slippery surfaces," says Lauren Gay , founder of Outdoorsy Diva . "It also has a closed, reinforced toe that prevents you from stubbing your toes on rocks or tree roots."

Our testers found Keen's SOLR Sport Sandals incredibly comfortable with ample support. "They felt similar to walking in any hiking shoes," one tester said. The open sides helped boost water drainage, and testers reported they took less than 15 minutes to dry fully. "The grip works very well; I could get out of the water on slippery surfaces and walk for a distance on submerged rocks without issue," a tester said. While these sandals are pricier than others on the list, our testers still strongly recommend them.

Sizes: 5-11 | Materials: Recycled plastic upper, rubber sole

Best Multi-Purpose

Sea star beachwear beachcomber water shoe.

Feels like a regular shoe

Handles different surfaces well

More stylish than others

More expensive

These look like your favorite pair of throw-’em-on-and-go espadrilles, but they're water shoes in fashionable disguise. Made from quick-drying neoprene uppers, they dry in 15 minutes, giving you enough time to get out of the water, change, and then head up the boardwalk to lunch at the cafe. They go with pretty much anything, and we're fans of having one less soggy thing to carry around in our beach bags.

"The shoe's fabric felt similar to a wet suit and pulled the water away from the skin and dried quickly," one tester said, noting they were also great for walking on pavement and sand and dried quickly. Our testers also enjoyed the shoe's style and construction. While these shoes are a bit pricier, our testers still recommend them to anyone looking for a multi-purpose and fashion-forward water shoe.

Sizes: 6-11 | Materials: Neoprene upper, rubber sole

Best for Draining

Merrell hydro moc.

Comfortable across multiple surfaces

Good traction and overall coverage

Lightweight

Material does not absorb water

We recommend Merrell's Hydro Moc Shoes for all you Crocs-curious ladies who don't actually want Crocs. The EVA-foam-based water shoes weigh about half a pound each and feature 2-millimeter lugs for boosted traction. Our testers really liked how easy these shoes were to walk in, noting they even performed well on trail hikes. The grip worked well both on dry and wet ground. Our testers did note a bit of irritation at the heel after walking in them for a long time. And while the shoes drain very quickly, thanks to all the holes and the EVA material, they did stay a bit slippery on the inside until totally dry.

Sizes: 6-11 | Materials: Single-density injected EVA

Best Splurge

Ryka hydro sport water shoe.

Comfortable on various surfaces

Protective and supportive

Versatile aesthetic

Can become irritating at the heel

The Ryka Hydro Sport Water Shoes are for anyone looking for a water shoe that doesn't look like a water shoe. Likewise, these shoes can handle multiple applications, including high-intensity workouts. So if you're looking for a shoe that can double as a practical water shoe and one for CrossFit, HIIT, and gym workouts, this is a solid pick.

Our testers took them on the sand, sidewalks, and dirt trails and reported that the shoes fit and perform like regular sneakers while dry. They provided plenty of support and kept pebbles and sand out, offering just as much protection as normal kicks. One issue our testers did note was experiencing some heel discomfort fairly quickly after the shoes became wet.

Sizes: 5-12 | Materials: Polyurethane, rubber

Best Comfort

Chaco women's torrent sport sandal.

Ideal for water sports

Strong construction

Could drain better

This cross-trainer from Chaco was designed with professional whitewater athletes. And our testers found them to be some of the most comfortable they tested—with a caveat. "I wouldn't say they're extremely comfortable in general, but as far as water shoes go, they're up there," a tester noted.

While these shoes have excellent protection and traction, our testers didn't think they drained as well as others on the test. "These water shoes had thick treads with a ton of traction and made me feel very secure," one tester reported. "They also felt high-quality and durable, like they would last through many adventures ."

Sizes: 6-11 | Materials: Knitted polyester upper, rubber sole

Stellar traction over multiple surfaces and an effective water-wicking design grant the DLGJPA Quick Drying Water Shoes first place. If you like a water shoe that looks and feels athletic, the Aleader Mesh Slip-On Water Shoe offers great value for your money.

Other Women's Water Shoes We Tested

Our testers put 17 shoes to the test. Those tested that did not make the list above include:

Astral Women's Loyak Shoe : This pick offers excellent drainage and decent protection and traction. Our tester found it difficult to get on and off and thought the price didn't match the value.

Racqua Water Shoes : The best thing about these shoes was a durable feeling across different terrain and an approachable price point. We felt they could only accommodate narrow foot types, and our testers noted the material got uncomfortably hot in the sun.

Anluke Water Shoes : Very basic and comfortable, these work well on flat, non-slippery surfaces like sandy beaches or water parks but don't feel very durable or offer enough traction.

Simari Water Shoes : Our tester had very similar notes as the Anluke Shoes, but these had slightly better grip. And while the top fabric was never soaking wet, it took 20 minutes for them to dry completely.

DigiHero Water Shoes : Another thin, comfortable option. It's ideal for flat surfaces as any rocks or pebbles can easily be felt underfoot.

Vifuur Water Sports Shoes : Our tester appreciated the drainage and solid soles of these shoes, but we'd like a bit more protection for the toes.

To select the products for this test, we researched highly rated water shoes across multiple retailers and included a variety of styles and price points. We also drew on the expertise of our editors and writers, who have experience with several of the brands we tested. For example, some of our editors and writers have been wearing Chacos, Merrells, and Keens for many years.

Once we selected shoes to test, we sent them to testers around the U.S. Testers rated each shoe on a five-point scale for comfort, drainage, protection and durability, traction, and value. Those scores were averaged for the overall scores for each shoe.

We first asked testers to take at least a 30-minute walk on dry land, which included rocks, sand, and pavement. Testers rated the comfort and traction of the dry land walks. We then asked testers to walk in a body of water for at least 30 minutes, including lakes, the ocean, rivers, creeks, or a pool.

Lastly, we asked testers to take an immediate walk after leaving the water to test for comfort and traction with wet shoes. And then, testers took a final dry land walk after the shoes were fully dry from the wet walk.

What to Look For in Women’s Water Shoes

Breathability.

The more breathable the water shoe, the quicker it’ll dry out, allowing you to get on with the rest of your day (and eliminating one more soggy thing from your beach bag ). Materials like neoprene let air flow easily, meaning that your shoes dry out quickly as soon as you’re back on land. This material also keeps your feet cool when the sun’s beating down.

One of the main reasons to wear water shoes is protection for your feet. It’s not just hot sand to look out for (though there is that!). You also want water shoes with a sturdy enough rubber bottom that you won’t feel the sharp edges of rocks, shells, or twigs on the beach. And, if you’re not going with a sandal style, choose a pair with a top and sides that enclose the rest of your feet to shield them.

Another key feature of a water shoe is solid traction. Rivers, in particular, can be dangerous because of the uneven surfaces and large, slick rocks. Look for shoes with larger lugs (measured in millimeters) or anti-slip technology on the outsoles.

The frequency with which you plan to wear water shoes should help you understand the price point you want to aim for. The more you wear them—whether you’re out hiking along rivers a few times a week or always heading to the beach for a morning swim—the more you might want to spend on what’s going to be a frequently worn part of your wardrobe. Remember that higher-quality shoes often cost a little more than budget ones, so even if you’re going on a one-off beach vacation, don’t let yourself compromise too much on what you really need from the shoes.

This really depends on what activity you’ll be doing in these shoes. Sandals might drag you down if you’re doing a water aerobics class; socks would be terrible to hike in. Think carefully about the purposes you intend for these shoes, and then build your choice around that. A snug pair of slip-on shoes might be your best bet if you need something truly all-purpose. Others prefer the airflow that comes with sandals for hiking, though they wouldn’t wear the hiking-style shoes to a bar after a boat ride. If you need to buy multiple pairs for different purposes, consider splashing out a bit more on the ones you wear most often.

It depends on the style of water shoe. A pair of chunky hiking sandals? Not so much. But sneakers with lacing uppers or water socks do a great job of forming a barrier between your skin so that grains can’t trickle in. Of course, you might have a bit of sand when taking off the shoes, but a well-fitting pair of water shoes will go a long way toward keeping your feet clean and sand-free.

There are several different styles of the best women’s sailing shoes available in the marketplace. Although they are called boat shoes, not all of them are as effective as you may desire if you are a serious sailor. While the name implies that they are primarily to be worn when boating, some styles have a more casual flavor to them. As such, they are more suited to wearing onshore.

Most women’s boat shoes, particularly when worn with socks, can easily substitute sneakers or loafers, depending on the function. It is because of the design and construction material that they are so versatile. However, with this in mind, here is a list of things to look for and what you will typically find when shopping for the best boat shoes for women:

  • Uppers are traditionally found in mid to dark-brown leathers. More contemporary styles feature canvas and leather uppers in different color choices as well as in numerous patterns.
  • Uppers should be water and stain-resistant.
  • Construction is often hand-sewn and top-stitched.
  • The overall design would be identified as ‘ moc-toe ’ in construction.
  • Lacing systems vary but commonly include a 360-degree design.
  • Boat shoes typically have two or three sets of eyelets.
  • Laces come in different materials but usually match the uppers.
  • Rubber soles are usually white and are always non-marking.
  • Soles have patterns carved into them to provide grip and to flush away water.
  • Shock absorption features appear in many styles.
  • Comfort in design and padding (often with removable liners) are typical.
  • Breathability comes from mesh panels and lightweight construction.
  • Many styles offer quick-dry materials in the uppers.

As you can tell, the details listed above can easily describe more than just women’s deck shoes. For serious sailors, not all of these factors make for good sailing shoes. As mentioned, some boat shoes are a good choice onboard boats and yachts, while other shoes in this category are best worn on dry land and not used for any kind of sailing activity.

Regardless, for a serious sailor, boat shoes serve a very different purpose than many of the shoe styles that fall under the actual name of ‘boat shoes.’ To find out more about the best sailing shoes for men and women that are specifically designed for sailing yachts, dinghies, and sailboards, click here .

How To Properly Care For Boat Shoes

Because boat shoes are exposed to elements that regular shoes are not typically (sun and saltwater) they require special care. By taking these precautions, your boat shoes will last longer and perform at their best at those times you need them most:

  • Clean the leather frequently with water-based cream shoe polish. Apply a leather conditioner to maintain the flexibility and water resistance of the leather.
  • Do not use alcohol-based or silicone polish.
  • Brush frequently to remove dirt, dust, and salt deposits.
  • Clean suede boat shoes with cornmeal massages. Let sit overnight then brush clean.
  • You should hand wash canvas boat shoes unless otherwise noted.
  • Dry at room temperature. Do not dry in the sun.
  • Store with shoe trees to keep their shape intact. Store shoes in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew.
  • Put on with a shoehorn to keep the back of the shoes in proper form.
  • Monitor sole condition and seek repairs when needed. Replace shoes when the soles show signs of wear to maintain traction and stability on the deck.

Important Features of Boat Shoes

When choosing the perfect boat shoes for women, consider specific features. Finding the right combination of comfort and functionality is vital to ensure your happiness with them. Factor the following main considerations into your selection process:

  • Comfort : Put comfort at the top of your list when choosing new boat shoes. If you anticipate wearing them for long hours, then you will want to ensure that a well-cushioned insole is part of the shoe construction. This, combined with arch support will reduce the development of pain and fatigue when worn for extended activities. Also, the fit of the show on your foot is crucial. Boat shoes that fit poorly can cause blisters and other forms of foot pain.
  • Durability : Boat shoes made from high-quality materials will generally last longer. The better choices are those made from either durable synthetic materials or genuine leather. Look closely at the shoe construction making note of the stitching and other details. A well-built shoe will give you countless hours of service. Plus, there are two benefits to factoring durability into your boat shoe search: you will contribute to sustainable fashion practices and receive a good return on your investment.
  • Traction : Boat shoes typically stand out from other types of sports shoes simply because of the type of traction they provide. A good pair of boat shoes will keep your feet where you plant them or help you move around without slipping or falling, even on wet surfaces. The soles of boat shoes are specially designed and contain patterns that grip well on wet decks and slippery surfaces. The superior traction found on boat shoes makes them a good choice for not just boating. Walking on docks, taking strolls on the waterfront, or enjoying activity on a rainy day are all possible with the safety that boat shoe traction offers.
  • Breathability : Look for boat shoes that contain either mesh panels or perforated leather as part of the design. These features provide breathability which keeps your feet cool and dry. Also, these features add ventilation to the shoes. This is important as ventilation keeps feet from experiencing discomfort and contributes to foot hygiene by reducing odor and eliminating the conditions that may otherwise lead to the development of bacterial growth.

Versatility and Beyond Boating

Although they are called boat shoes, they are for boating and so much more. Known as a staple in women’s fashion, boat shoes have become versatile over the years which has allowed them to fit into so many different settings. This is why adding boat shoes to your wardrobe is a wise decision. The style, comfort, and functionality of boat shoes perfectly fit many different occasions. Some of their most common uses include:

  • Outdoor Gatherings : The blend of casual comfort and subtle sophistication that come from boat shoes make them a perfect addition to your wardrobe when attending one of many different types of outdoor gatherings. They fit well at garden parties, picnics, or barbecues.
  • Vacations : Traveling across the country or to exotic overseas locations, boat shoes are a great companion due to their versatility. Because they are easy to wear and lightweight, they can easily be packed into luggage. They also look great worn with shorts, skirts, or sundresses.
  • Everyday Wear : Because of their timeless style, boat shoes have become part of everyday fashion. They are comfortable and functional when worn to run errands around town or when spending time with friends. Plus, they can be easily paired with any outfit thanks to their classic designs and neutral colors.
  • Casual Work Attire : If you work at a place where the dress code is business casual, boat shoes can easily become your go-to choice for work footwear. They pair well with blazers, blouses, and tailored trousers. Boat shoes will also tone down the look of your outfit by bringing a laid-back elegance to your ensemble.
  • Weekend Escapes : Whether you’re exploring the mountains or walking the city streets, you’ll find boat shoes a welcome addition on any weekend adventure. Their effectiveness stems from their construction – sturdy soles and durable build. Boat shoes ensure your feet remain comfortable and offer the necessary grip for any surface.

Boat Shoes For Women FAQs

How should women’s boat shoes fit and what sizes are available.

You should ensure your boat shoes are comfortable with a secure fit that is neither too tight nor too loose. Consider these tips:

–  Snug Fit : Boat shoes should have a snug fit around the heel and instep. This ensures that your foot does not slip out of the shoe when walking. –  Toe Space : The boat shoe should have enough room in the toe box to permit you to move your toes with ease. They should not feel squeezed or cramped. –  Arch : There should be enough arch support to keep your feet comfortable when wearing them for extended periods. –  Heel : The boat shoe should have enough room for a little heel movement. If the show slips off your heel, the size is too big.

As for sizing for women, boat shoes usually range in size from US size 5 to 12. Keep in mind that sizing may vary depending on the brand and some manufacturers produce boat shoes in half sizes which can help you find a better fit.

What are some popular materials used for women’s boat shoes?

There are several different types of materials used in women’s boat shoes. They include:

–  Leather : This is a popular choice for boat shoes as leather is durable, comfortable, and has a classic look. –  Canvas : This is a lightweight and breathable material that is commonly used for casual boat shoes. It is easy to clean, and canvas is considered a practical selection. –  Suede : As a soft, velvety type of leather, suede is both flexible and comfortable. Its elegant look makes it a great choice for boat shoes. –  Nubuck : This is another type of leather that has similar qualities to suede. However, Nubuck is more durable and water-resistant. –  Mesh : This lightweight and breathable material is used in many athletic-style boat shoes. It keeps feet cool and dry as it permits maximum airflow. –  Synthetics : Boat shoes often come in synthetic materials like polyester or nylon. People choose them often because they are lightweight, water-resistant, and quick-drying.

Which brands of boat shoes do you recommend for women?

Several different brands produce great boat shoes for women. Some popular brands include:

–  Sperry : Known well in the sailing community, Sperry was the brand that produced the first-ever boat shoe. They boast a large product line of women’s boat shoes. Sperry uses high-quality materials in their products, designing them for style and comfort. –  Helly Hansen : Helly Hansen, a brand with a high-quality outdoor and sailing gear reputation, also boasts a line of women’s boat shoes. They design these shoes with non-slip soles and construct them using water-resistant materials. –  Sebago : Sebago, another reputable brand, provides a variety of boat shoes for women. They construct their shoes from high-quality leather and equip them with non-marking, slip-resistant soles. –  Timberland : This is a popular outdoor and casual wear brand that also carries women’s boat shoes. These products are made with premium leather and come complete with anti-fatigue technology for all-day comfort.

Are there any specific boat shoes designed for women with wide feet or specific foot problems?

There are boat shoes designed for women with wide feet or specific foot problems. Most brands have wide widths of up to EE or EEE. Others have removable soles which allow some women to insert custom orthotics.

Here are a few examples of shoe brands with special design features to accommodate women with wider feet or other foot issues:

–  Sperry : This brand has boat shoes in wide widths and removable insoles. For the extra room in the toe box, Sperry also has a “relaxed” fit option. –  Clark’s : This brand features women’s boat shoes with wide widths and cushioned insoles. –  Rockport : The women’s boat shoes made by this brand have wide and extra-wide fits and an extra cushioning system that provides additional support. –  Vionic : This shoemaker has boat shoes with orthotic insoles and widths ranging from medium, wide, and extra-wide. –  Skechers : The boat shoes from this brand have a relaxed fit and memory foam insole for added comfort.

Are boat shoes suitable for other water activities besides boating?

Boat shoes are suitable for occasional water exposure like at the beach or poolside. However, they’re not ideal for activities that involve prolonged submersion or water sports. For those, specialized water shoes are recommended.

Can boat shoes be worn for casual or dressy occasions, or are they only suitable for boating?

Boat shoes, while originally designed for boating, are versatile footwear suitable for casual and semi-casual occasions. They pair well with shorts, jeans, and chinos. However, for formal events, traditional dress shoes are preferable.

There are several different options available in ladies’ deck shoes, even if not all of them are made just for sailing. However, if you are looking specifically for the best boat shoes for women, you are in luck. Manufacturers that are known for their sportswear, and men’s boat shoes in particular, also happen to have ladies’ styles available in their product line.

You really have to be clear on what you intend to use the shoes for as not all boat shoes are suitable for serious sailing. Some of the deck shoes on the market are intended to be used in and best suited for a more casual setting. Although that adds to their versatility, it reduces their value for boating.

Regardless, shoe manufacturers will continue to produce what they call deck shoes. Serious sailors know a good boat shoe when they see one. Even if you don’t own a boat nor do you intend to, you will surely find some boat shoe styles to be comfortable enough to wear casually.

Hopefully, this list of some of the best women’s sailing shoes has helped you decide which pair is right for you.

With so many different types of sailing shoes on the market, it’s interesting to see what other people like to get ideas. So, ladies, if you have a favorite pair of sailing shoes, let us know. What is your pick for the best boat shoes for women?

Most Comfortable Boat Shoes: 6 All-Day Favorites

  • Steve Walburn
  • March 24, 2023

Looking for the most comfortable boat shoes for sailing? Check out these six styles that focus on support and cushioning to find exactly what you need.

women's yachting shoes

Among the many reasons to own a dedicated shoe for sailing, finding the most comfortable boat shoe should be at or near the top of the list. Whether racing, cruising, or just day sailing, only a proper fit and solid traction supersede the need to comfortably stay in a pair of shoes as long as the day demands.

Above all else, the most comfortable boat shoes provide plenty of cushion and stability. They should be fast-drying without seeming flimsy. And, of course, a non-marking sole with wet-grip traction is a must.

When it comes to the comfort factor, there are a few things to look for straight away. A sneaker-like profile is the first tell. The shoe may still have traditional topsider DNA—with a stitched moccasin toe and two or three eyelets—but the footbed will resemble nothing so much as a running shoe.

This extra bulk is a natural trait of the best boat shoes built with comfort in mind. That’s because they often include cushiony features, such as an EVA foam midsole and ample arch support.

The most comfortable boat shoes will fit snuggly without constricting, an area where slip-on models shine. Their one disadvantage is that if they slip on, they can also slip off, perhaps inadvertently.

Whatever style you prefer, here are six shoes in a wide range of price points to keep you sailing comfortably all day and all season long.

6 of the most comfortable boat shoes for sailors

Chatham buton g2.

Specifications | Sizes: 6 through 12 | Colors: Navy, Red Brown, Walnut | Construction: Nubuck leather and mesh

Reasons to Buy:

– Great looking shoe with comfort top of mind. – Extra cushiony. – Nice blend of traditional deck shoes with sneaker comfort.

Reasons to Avoid:

– High price point.

One of the tradeoffs in comfortable shoes is that they sometimes appear too bulky. Consider those clunky hospital shoes and orthopedic sneakers.

Chatham’s Buton G2 deck shoe navigates this terrain beautifully with a well-proportioned upper of nubuck leather on a well-padded midsole.

The G2 Collection is Chatham’s premium shoe line, and the Buton G2 is a top-of-the-line offering. Water-resistant leather is paired with mesh side panels to promote breathability and drying.

It emphasizes comfort without straying from a traditional deck-shoe lineage. Chatham’s shock-absorbing sole spring poron technology adds superior cushioning as well as anti-bacterial protection.

When considering any leather boat shoe meant for wet conditions, keep in mind that the leather will stretch. That means a snug fit is just about right when the shoes are new.

Dockers beacon boat shoe.

Specifications | Sizes: 7 through 13 (medium width) | Colors: Navy, Gray, Tan, Dark Tan | Construction: Leather and mesh

– Very affordable. – Emphasis on comfort. – Mesh panels for drainage.

– Some buyers report they run narrow.

If you are looking for a more affordable deck shoe that nonetheless emphasizes all-day comfort, check out the Beacon Boat Shoe from Dockers. It’s the same moccasin style topsider so familiar to boaters, but with extra stability and support at a bargain price.

The sole is EVA foam, which is a material used in many running shoes for its rebound qualities.

Uppers are made from treated leather to resist stains and shed water. A springy footbed is treated with Cleansport NXT, which is Dockers’ anti-bacterial technology.

Elasticized goring between the upper collar and the tongue makes it easy to slip the shoe on and off without unlacing it. Double goring on both sides of the shoe also accommodates wearers with a high instep by automatically adjusting to the foot shape for a custom fit.

Nantucket III

World Wide Sportsman Nantucket III

Specifications | Sizes: 8 through 13 (with limited half sizes) | Colors: Tan Beige | Construction: Nubuck leather and mesh

– Budget-friendly. – Slip-on comfort. – Classic leather and mesh combination.

– Available only in beige.

For true slip-on convenience, the World Wide Sportsmen Nantucket III is hard to beat in both price and performance. At less than £35 ($43) the Nantucket III has all the comfort and stability available in many shoes twice the price.

The shoe features nubuck uppers with leather trim and generous mesh panels for ventilation and weight reduction. There are also additional eyelets at the outstep to allow drainage.

A removable high-cushion insole provides shock absorption for long days on the water. The leather-reinforced and well-padded collar offers the kind of fit and stability normally found in lace-up shoes.

If you want a budget-friendly slip-on with plenty of support for sailing, fishing, or pleasure boating, the Nantucket III deserves a good look.

Sperry 3-Eye Billfish Boat Shoe

Specifications | Sizes: 7 through 15 | Colors: Dark Tan, Tan Beige | Construction: Full-grain leather and mesh.

– Good value. – Three rust-proof eyelets for best fit. – Durable and comfortable.

– One of the bulkier deck shoes. – May feel too warm for tropical climates.

When it comes to the most comfortable boat shoes for men, it’s hard to beat the value and performance found in Sperry’s 3-Eyelet Billfish.

The combination of leather and mesh reduces weight while still providing substantial support over a thick sole with full-length cushioning. Generous padding in the heel and tongue add to the springy feel.

The tread is wave-siped over its entire surface, and the high-grip rubber outsole extends up and around the sides of the foot for optimal traction.

Despite this shoe’s heft, the mesh side panels promote air flow to help keep your feet dry and comfortable all day long.

Sperry Women’s Koifish

Specifications | Sizes: 5 through 12 (medium width) | Colors: Grey, Navy, Tan | Construction: Leather and textile.

– Extra padding in tongue and insole. – Traditional deck shoe style. – Mid-range price.

– Fit may run narrow. – Beware of Sperry imitations online. Caveat emptor !

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be as much market emphasis on comfortable boat shoes for women as there is for men. The category is relegated primarily to topsider styles with a few trainers and sneaker-inspired shoes here and there.

The Sperry Women’s Koifish is designed specifically with comfort in mind. It’s a take on the classic leather topsider with a stitched moccasin toe, but several touches set it apart from traditional deck shoes.

First, the tongue is padded rather than solid leather. There is also extra insole padding in the arch and heel, which is built over an EVA midsole for better shock absorption.

Despite the soft fabric panels, it’s a sturdier shoe on a more forgiving platform than many other two-eyelet deck shoes.

And of course, Sperry’s non-marking rubber outsole with Wave-Siping tread ensures that you will be as sure-footed as you are comfortable.

Specifications | Sizes: 8 through 11.5 | Colors: Navy | Construction: Leather and mesh

– Running shoe technology. – Contemporary style. – Mid-range price.

– Available in only one color. – Considerable bulk.

The heritage of Helly Hansen’s Newport F-1 deck shoe is easy to spot. It is equal parts classic topsider and modern athletic shoe. Only this sneaker is designed specifically with mariners in mind.

Constructed of waterproof full-grain leather, the upper has a well-padded collar and 3-eyelet wrap-around lacing to offer the most comfortable fit. It sits atop an EVA molded midsole for the rebound and support that active sailors need.

The Newport midsole also features a second layer of firmer EVA foam, called a medial side post, to provide additional support. This feature helps reduce excessive pronation or turning of the ankle.

Mesh side panels keep the weight down and promote breathability, and the non-marking tread features about as much siping as one could fit on a deck shoe. And that’s a good thing!

Whether it's your first time out on the water, going laser sailing, or your umpteenth sailing trip, a good pair of sailing shoes is essential to your safety. Designed specifically for use on wet surfaces and slippery conditions. They'll improve traction and keep your feet comfortable during long days on the boat.

In this guide to sailing shoes, we're highlighting the best sailing shoes on the market from top boat shoe brands and offering helpful tips to ensure you find just the right pair. So grab your sailing hats and let the adventure begin.

What Type Of Shoes Is Best For Sailing?

Sailing shoes are designed specifically for wet conditions, such as on a slippery boat deck or wooden dock. While some are fashioned after athletic shoes, others styles are closer to boots or gaiters. Those referred to as boat shoes or deck shoes are typically made with a canvas or salt water resistant leather upper, a non-marking rubber sole, and a slip-on silhouette similar to a loafer.

Do You Wear Socks With Sailing Shoes?

While some people prefer to go sock-free, most prefer to wear socks with their boat shoes. Without them, you risk getting painful rubs and blisters that can quickly ruin your day on the water. Stick with performance socks designed specifically for use in soggy conditions. Slip a pair of low-cut, no-show socks under your boat shoes for a laid-back, European look that doesn't fall short on protection.

What To Look For In Boat Shoes

Sailing shoes are designed for everything from dinghy sailing to deep-sea fishing, so you'll want to shop for styles designed specifically for your intended end-use. Here are a few key product features that make for a great pair:

Non-slip rubber sole

The primary purpose of sailing shoes is to provide traction. Look for pairs with non-slip, non-marking soles that keep you safe in wet, slippery conditions. Some soles feature durability and anti-slip properties.

Performance fabric

While traditionally crafted with leather, most pairs today are made with quick-drying fabrics with added breathability and water resistance.

Mesh construction

Many boating shoes feature strategically-placed mesh panels to improve ventilation and drain away excess water. They'll help keep your feet dry and comfortable all day long.

Adjustable fit

Any good pair of water shoes is designed with laces or adjustable straps for a customizable fit. If you're shopping for kids, stick with simple velcro straps.

Removable insole

Opt for a pair with fully removable insoles for easy cleaning and faster dry times. Slip them out in between uses so they can fully dry.

Antimicrobial treatments

The best boat shoes are treated with innovative antimicrobial treatments that minimize foot odors, prevent mildew growth, and keep fungal infections at bay.

Avoid flip-flops and open-toe shoes as they are an injury risk, thanks to the number of deck fittings on most yachts.

The Best Sailing Shoes For The 2024 Season

The Best Sailing Shoes | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

January 2, 2024

The best sailing shoes are both waterproof and slip-resistant. Outdoor boots are popular, but specialty sailing shoes are available.

Traditional sailing shoes are typically made of suede or similar material and feature a low-profile design and relatively flat soles. Modern sailing shoes are designed for offshore use and made of waterproof synthetic material.

Table of contents

Types of Sailing Shoes

Sailing shoes come in two primary types. These are stylish traditional sailing shoes (which are made of natural materials) and modern waterproof offshore sailing shoes. Both are practical and useful aboard sailboats.

Traditional Sailing Shoes

Traditional sailing shoes have been around for almost a century. These shoes, also known as "yacht shoes," are made from suede leather and are soft and flexible. They're not usually waterproof, but they can be made more water-resistant using chemical treatments.

Traditional sailing shoes are primarily used as a style statement, but they can be quite practical for some sailors. After all, they were designed to be used on boats. They utilize a flat sole that features a unique non-slip texture, which was designed to give sailors traction on a wet deck.

Modern Waterproof Sailing Shoes

Modern waterproof sailing shoes are made from synthetic materials and engineered for traction on wet surfaces. These shoes are preferred by offshore sailing crews who need to stay warm and dry in rough weather conditions.

Sailing Boots

Sailing boots are often used in conjunction with full-body foul weather gear. These boots resemble snow or rain boots, and they're made of a waterproof material such as rubber.

Sailing boots are often reserved for foul weather, as they're heavier and more clumsy than modern lightweight sailing shoes. That said, every offshore sailor should have a set of waterproof boots onboard.

Best Traditional Sailing Shoes

Traditional sailing shoes are practical, stylish, and still widely available. High-quality examples can last for years, and they're a staple of yacht clubs and sailing organizations across the country. Here are four of the best traditional sailboat shoes.

1. Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe

Sperry practically invented the 20th-century boat shoe, and they're still the go-to shoe company for sailors across the world. The Sperry Leeward Boat Shoe  is an excellent introduction to traditional boat shoes.

Sperry's traditional Leeward shoe is a tan leather slip-on deck shoe made of a water-resistant hide. It features a rubber sole, which incorporates the Sperry anti-slip design that's popular across the line.

The design of the shoe is simple, and it's stitched together using thick and sturdy thread for long service life. Its water-resistant treatment makes it easy to clean and quick to dry should it become waterlogged.

This traditional marine shoe is both comfortable and stylish, making it ideal for regattas and dockside events. Despite its looks, the Sperry Leeward shoe is also practical. The Sperry Top-Deck line is popular with sailors and boat owners, as it stands up well to spray and slippery conditions.

2. L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat Mocs

L.L. Bean is another household name in traditional boat shoes. While not as ubiquitous as Sperry, L.L. Bean shoes are an excellent choice for traditional sailing footwear.

L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat Mocs  are made in the traditional boat shoe style. They're slip-on by design and feature a low-profile sole with a very slight heel. L.L. Bean uses a different sole design philosophy, opting for a non-textured material.

Counterintuitively, the L.L. Bean flat non-textured sole actually has excellent anti-slip characteristics. It's made of sturdy leather that resists sliding on wet decks, and it features slight outsole siphons to increase grip on wet surfaces.

The L.L. Bean Casco Bay Boat shoe is constructed with durable yet flexible leather that is comfortable and easy to clean. It features a leather liner inside, which works well with short socks and wears evenly over time.

That said, the leather liner is designed to work with or without socks. This is a plus, as it makes taking the shoe on and off easy after a day on the beach or walking around the deck barefoot.

These shoes feature a lace-up top with leather laces. They can be tied and left in place, as this is a slip-on shoe. The L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe can be worn with or without socks, just like the Sperry mentioned above.

3. J. Crew Classic Leather Boat Shoes

J. Crew produces an affordable and classic-looking set of boat shoes that are ideal for a first set. These shoes are made of suede-like leather, and they feature a non-slip rubber sole with a traditional profile.

J. Crew Classic Leather sailing shoes  follow the stylistic trends of early boat shoes, yet they incorporate some modern materials that make them more practical for use on a sailboat. These include a non-marking rubber sole that's specifically designed to improve traction on wet and dry surfaces.

These J. Crew boat shoes feature leather laces in a way similar to the L.L. Bean Casco Bay shoe. Like the L.L. Bean variants, these shoes can be worn with or without socks.

The leather is treated for easy cleaning, and they're hand-stitched for strength and longevity. The laces come through the sides of the shoe through grommets, which helps prevent the leather from wearing or breaking around the entry and exit points.

These classic boat shoes are a perfect first pair, and they're affordable enough to wear frequently. They also function as sailboat shoes, which is a plus as many new "boat shoes" are designed for looks only.

4. Sperry Gold Cup Original Boat Shoe

Sperry Gold Cup boat shoes  are a classic and premium boat shoe. It features the standard Sperry anti-slip sole and durable leather construction for long life and easy cleaning.

Like most standard Sperry shoes, the Gold Cup Original series is designed to be used on a sailboat or yacht. The shoe's design is based on the original Sperry, which was worn by sailors and yacht owners for decades.

Sperry shoe soles are lightly scored and made with a coarse rubber material that resists slip on wet decks. They're excellent for teak and fiberglass decks and add a layer of security to existing non-slip surfaces.

The shoes themselves follow the classic Sperry design philosophy. They're made from a non-suede leather that's water-resistant and dries out quickly, and they feature leather laces fed through 18k gold plated eyelets.

These shoes feature durable stitching that's used to extend their service life. Inside the shoe, a lambskin lining makes it comfortable to wear with or without socks. The Sperry Gold Cup shoe is a high-quality sailing shoe that's ideal for warm conditions.

Best Modern Sailing Shoes

Although modern sailing shoes lack the aesthetic appeal of traditional sailing shoes, they offer the added convenience of modern design and the functionality of synthetic materials. Here are four of the best modern shoes for sailing.

1. Atlantic Heritage Comfort Boat Shoe

The Atlantic Heritage Comfort Boat Shoe  combines traditional styling with modern functionality. It features a suede and stitched appearance and the design of a modern running shoe, and it offers superior support and anti-slip characteristics.

The primary drawback of flat-soled shoes is that they can be uncomfortable, especially if you have foot, back, or knee problems. The Atlantic Heritage shoe eliminates these issues, as it offers the support of a modern shoe.

The primary selling point of the Atlantic Heritage shoe is comfort. It's designed specifically to offer all-day comfort when standing on the deck or walking alongshore. They work just as well on sand and gravel, and they offer elevation in all the right places.

The Atlantic Heritage shoe features a proprietary anti-slip sole, which is designed to provide traction without leaving marks. They stand up to water well, despite the fact that they're not technically waterproof.

2. DLGJPA Lightweight Aqua Water Shoes

The DLGJPA Lightweight Aqua Water shoe  series is a radical departure from what most people would consider a traditional boat shoe. These woven shoes are designed for grip and use in wet conditions.

The Aqua Water shoe series takes a different approach to water resistance. Instead of keeping water out, they're designed to let it flow around and inside of the shoe. The woven body of the shoe dries almost as quickly as it gets wet.

The Aqua Water shoe is a warm-weather shoe designed for wet tropical environments and water sports. They're especially useful for launching boats if you need to get in the water to guide the vessel.

The bottom of the Aqua Water shoe is perforated for quick draining. These shoes are highly breathable and ultralight, making them a comfortable and non-slip option for warm weather sailing.

3. Riomar Deck Driver Stingray Boat Shoe

Are you looking for traditional styling with a modern non-slip grip? The Riomar Deck Driver Stingray  is the perfect combination of style and modern materials for use in wet and dry sailing conditions .

A unique feature of the Riomar Deck Driver is the sole. It features a series of protruding rubber buttons that conform to the shape of the ground for optimal grip.

These shoes are non-marking, which is especially important for boats with polished white fiberglass deck spaces. The shoes are flexible and comfortable and designed to be worn with or without socks.

Riomar is a well-known producer of marine shoes, and the Deck Driver Stingray is the culmination of years of experience making high-quality sailboat shoes. These shoes are ideal if you're looking for an attractive and practical modern sailing shoe.

4. Swims Waterproof Penny Loafer

Here's a unique and modern machine-washable sailing shoe designed for comfort and good looks. The Swims Penny Loafer  is a well-executed take on an old design and an excellent choice for warm-weather sailing.

The Swims Penny Loafer is completely waterproof and designed for use in wet conditions. It's washable and contains antimicrobial materials to stay sanitary even in the worst conditions.

The shoe features a proven traction sole design with scoring and anti-slip compounds. It's ideal for walking around fiberglass or wooden deck and maintains traction when the deck is wet.

These shoes are designed to look like penny loafers, which means they're both stylish and comfortable. They can be worn with or without socks, but they're designed primarily for sockless use.

Swims Waterproof Penny Loafer sailboat shoes are currently available in light blue, gray, brown, black, and dark blue. Two-tone gray and neon green are available, and the rest of the colors feature a close-to-matching sole.

Best Sailboat Boots for Rough Weather

Warm weather and calm conditions aren't the only things that sailors encounter. Thus, it's a good idea to have a set of waterproof sailing boots to accompany your foul weather gear. Here are the three best sailboat boots for less-than-ideal sailing conditions.

1. Xtratuf 6 in Ankle Deck Boots

These modern deck boots are the perfect way to prepare for rough weather onboard a sailboat. They're comfortable and waterproof and slip on easily without any laces.

The lack of laces on these boots is more than just convenience. Laces pose a hazard on a sailboat, as it's easy to get them snagged on a cleat or trip while walking around the deck. The Xtratuf 6 Ankle Deck Boots eliminate this hazard.

Aesthetically, these are attractive boots that go well with foul-weather gear. They're not noticeably larger than standard fishing boots. In fact, they're lower-profile than most foul weather boots. That makes them an excellent choice for fair and inclement weather

These are low boots, as they only reach about halfway up the ankle. They're made of a waterproof rubber material that's comfortable, durable, and easy to clean. Xtratuf sailing boots also feature a flat non-slip sole for traction when moving about the deck.

2. Gill Short Cruising Boots

Here's a traditional sailboat boot that's designed for comfort, safety, and water resistance. These "short" boots are fairly tall and ideal for pairing with the waterproof pants from your foul weather gear.

Gill Short Cruising Boots  are designed specifically for marine use, which makes them ideal for keeping aboard a sailboat. The soles feature a proprietary design that offers durability and superior anti-slip properties.

These boots resemble traditional fishing boots or barn muck boots, but they're designed for waterproof use on slippery surfaces such as the deck of a sailboat.

They're comfortable and easy to clean, and they're a highly affordable option if you don't already have a pair of foul weather waterproof sailing boots.

3. Rugged Shark Great White Deck Boots

Rugged Shark is a household name in sailboat boots, and they produce a line of premium deck boots for foul weather use. These full-size boots are perfect for all sailing weather conditions.

The Rugged Shark Great White deck boot  is a serious heavy-duty deck boot. It's the "real deal," as they say, and this boot offers numerous advantages when the weather gets hazardous (or simply damp and uncomfortable).

These boots are roomy and waterproof, allowing sailors to wear warm insulated socks inside without fear of waterlogging. They work well with standard foul weather gear, and they're high enough to keep water out if the cockpit fills up.

These boots feature an anti-slip sole with corrugated scoring. This anti-slip surface is comparable to traditional deck shoes that date back almost a century. These are proven premium boots with the right combination of durability and flexibility.

Best Sailing Shoes | Yachting Shoes for Men and Women

Are you heading on deck and need the best sailing shoes to ensure grip? You’ve come to the right place. I have tested a variety of boat shoes for sailing over the years so I know just what to look for in a pair of boating shoes.

And if you were worried about how they will look, you actually get extremely versatile boating shoes these days that can work for both sailing the seven seas and waltzing across the land.

Best Shoes for Sailing

If you are looking for the best shoes for a yacht, then you need to know exactly what traits they need to be suitable for sailing. Here’s exactly what you need to look for when you’re in search of the best shoes for sailing:

They need to be suitable for the deck of a boat, so having non-marking rubber soles is a must. You need to have enough grip to stop your from sliding, but they can’t be dark rubber or they will cause skid marks and damage the surface of the boat.

While you can choose between a sailing boot, sneaker, deck shoe, or slip slop, there needs to be some sort of non-marking grip to make them appropriate for boat wear .

Men’s Sailing Shoes

If you are looking for men’s sailing shoes or men’s deck shoes, then you’ve come to the right place. These are some of the best shoes for sailing boats on the market currently.

If you really want to look the part of a yacht owner, then these Sperry boat shoes are the real deal, and the perfect shoe for someone spending time onboard but still wanting to look good. While they may not have the quick drying benefits of water shoes, they are authrnetic and look the part.

Their thick white rubber soles allow you to stick to the deck while still providing no chance of marking the deck. If you want to easily waltz around the boat while looking swarve doing it, then these shoes just might be for you.

Columbia Men’s Slack Tide Slip PFG Boat Shoe

These Colombia men’s slack tide boat shoes are ideal for those that like to wear boat shoes that look like sneakers. They are plane black with white soles, ideal for wearing aboard a boat or yacht. These are not water shoes so they don’t dry quickly, their real strength lies in sticking to the deck rather than slipping.

If you are looking for the ideal deck shoes for sailing, then you can’t go wrong with this good looking pair of shoes for sailing.

Women’s Shoes for Yachting

If you’re looking for the best boat shoes for women then you’ve come to the right place. I have personally tried and tested a handful of these great sailing boat shoes and these are a couple of my favorites.

women's yachting shoes

Hey Dude Women’s Wendy Women’s Lace-Up Loafers

These women’s water loafers look just like the sailboat shoes we’ve come to expect. They are laced up, giving them an extra layer of sophistication which is ideal for sailing a boat. Not only do they look great but they’re incredibly practical too.

Their white rubber soles mean they will provide you with a level of stickiness (for want of a better word), that will keep you grounded to the boat.

DLGJPA Women’s Quick Drying Water Shoes

These DLGJPA Women’s Quick Drying Water Shoes are the perfect fit for women who like to get their hands dirty on the deck. If you happen to get completely soaked while sailing a yacht, these quick-dry shoes will dry out in no time.

They are easy to fasten with their pull-tight laces and they are fitted with a white rubber sole ideal for gripping to a boat. They come in a variety of colors so choose a pair that will go best with your boat outfits.

Roxy Women’s Ahoy Slip-on Boat Shoe Sneaker

These Roxy Women’s Ahoy Slip-on Boat Shoe Sneaker are great if you plan on being on a boat, but not for ladies who plan on sailing the boat themselves. This is because they’re a little too fashionable for heavy-duty sailing activities.

Their rubber soles allow them to grip to the deck nicely, but because they slip on and off rather easily, they are not suited to any kind of athletic activity. Let’s just say these are not water shoes for sailing.

Columbia Women’s Slack Water PFG Slip Boat Shoe

These Columbia Women’s Slack Water PFG Slip Boat Shoes have a casual sneaker look but are really rather practical. They slip on an off, but will not come off during rigorous activity. Their white rubber soles also provide you with ample grip, allowing you to make your way across the deck with relative ease.

These are ideal for women who are going to get stuck into the sailing of the yacht but still want to look really good doing it. They’re comfortable and padded soles also mean they can be worn for hours on end without any sort of discomfort.

COMPARISON TABLE – THE BEST SAILING SHOES

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SAILING SHOES

Type of sailing.

Equipment and clothing that you require for sailing very much depend on what type of sailing you’ll be doing. Whether it’s dinghy racing or classic cruising, your footwear needs to be right.

DINGHY SAILING

Dinghy sailing is probably the wettest kind of sailing (unless you’re into extreme performance yachts!) and so your dinghy sailing shoes need to cope. Dinghy sailing also involves shifting your body and weight quickly so clumpy shoes just aren’t going to cut it.

To keep your feet warm and easy to move in wet conditions, most dinghy sailors wear wetsuit booties. Made from neoprene , these types of boots come in different thicknesses depending on what temperatures you’ll be sailing in. Some dinghy sailing booties also have reinforced top sections so they don’t wear out when you’re feet are under the straps.

Cruising tends to be a much more laid back affair than dinghy sailing and shoe choice is much larger. From deck shoes to sailing wellies, your footwear choice will depend on your boat, the conditions and whether you need to go on deck or not.

The main consideration for cruising sailors is a non-marking sole. Black rubber marks are a big no-no on any boat! Cruising shoes should be reasonable waterproof in case waves come over, but also grippy, comfortable and easy to clean.

While many cruising yachts can also race, the act of racing is a more extreme form of sailing. What does that mean? It means that you’ll probably have a lot more water washing along the decks and into the cockpit.

Yachts may also be more heeled over when racing than other types of sailing so it’s easier to slip. If you want to do some racing or will be sailing a racing yacht, grippy soles are a must. Sailing shoes should also be waterproof and with a low-profile so you can move quickly should you need to.

LOCATION AND WEATHER

Will you be sailing on a lake? At sea? In big waves? In flat water? Will it be cold? Hot? Tropical? No one wants cold feet right?

If you’re sailing in a cold water area, you should plan your shoes for the water temperature, not the air temperature. Why? Because when the wind crosses water, it will often cool to the temperature of the water. Even on a hot, sunny day, sailing can get chilly if the water is cool.

In cold weather, numb toes can be a real problem. If you’re planning on cold water sailing then remember to leave room in sailing shoes for warm, thick socks.

On the flip side, if you’ll be sailing in warm seas and hot sun, you’ll need breathable sailing shoes that won’t leave your feet sweaty. Shows made from leather, mesh or GORE-TEX are usually very breathable.

Sailing shoes come in all sorts of materials, mainly suited to conditions and environment. Dinghy sailing shoes need to allow you to swim in them should you capsize, hence being made out of neoprene. The thicker the neoprene, the warmer they’ll keep your feet.

Other sailing shoes can be made out of rubber or plastic. These materials are waterproof, making them good for cold water sailing. Rubber isn’t breathable though, so for warmer weather, leather or breathable synthetics are a good choice.

Non-marking soles are crucial for any type of boat. A passenger or crew member with a marking sole is liable to be made to walk the plank. Luckily, it’s hard to find marking soles in the sailing shoe industry. All the sailing shoes featured in our reviews have non-marking soles.

Grippy soles are important as decks and cockpits can get very slippery. However, deep tread isn’t necessarily good and can pick up stones and gravel ashore which then scratch the gelcoat and wood on a boat.

Neoprene booties usually have reinforced soles for longevity and extra comfort when walking up dinghy ramps. Cheaper booties might lack this feature and could wear out much faster but are great for beginners .

Uncomfortable shoes are terrible so it seems like a no-brainer to buy comfortable sailing shoes. But there’s often more to it than ordinary shoes.

For instance, will you always be wearing socks? Sometimes, you might need to get out on deck quickly when you have to reef a sail . You may not have time to put socks on, so can you still wear and walk in your shoes without them?

Do you find shoes often rub? If so, finding shoes with a softer opening might be a good idea. Blisters can get infected in saltwater environments, especially if you’re sailing in the sub-tropics and tropics.
