Bridging the past and the future

How has the superyacht bridge evolved over the last 25 years, and what will it look like in 25 years’ time.

Image for article Bridging the past and the future

While it’s fair to say that most aspects of superyachts, their design and their systems have changed in the last quarter century, there can be few more marked examples than the nerve centre of the yacht – the bridge. At first, the progression from a jumbled collection of what now seems fairly primitive equipment to an holistic control centre seemed slow, but in the last decade the pace of change has quickened as technologies advance at an ever-increasing rate. There are other reasons for the dramatic shift, too.

“Back in 1992 the bridge was mainly a technical space,” begins Tobias Grunwald, sales director at Raytheon Anschütz, “compared to today where it is considered by the owner as part of the owner’s area where he might sit with his guests or pass through when showing his boat.”

“If we rewind 25 years, the bridge was reserved for the captain only,” agrees Mike Blake, president of Palladium Technologies. “Today it has become an extension of the yacht so it’s got to look nice. I remember one of our owners – a very well known technology guy – walking up to his bridge and saying  ‘wow, why is my bridge so outdated?’. That’s all it took – we got called and flew in, and a year later we had completely ripped out the bridge and designed a much more tech-looking bridge. Owners use the bridge now both for entertaining guests and to show off the really cool tech they have. It has become part of the bragging rights.”

Part of the transformation has been thanks to the changing nature of technology. On the one hand, the equipment itself has morphed, from Loran C to early GPS to the super-accurate GPS we have today. Radar has evolved; CRT screens became TFT, and with that came the move from discrete circuitry to PC-based systems; paper charts have been replaced with ECDIS, and all these things can now talk to each other. “In the early days,” says Grunwald, “there were protocols to exchange data, but it was maybe the beginning of integration, and there was not a lot of need for it back then. From Raytheon’s perspective, we started with integration at the end of the 1990s, and there was a dramatic change when we moved from CRT to TFT monitors – nearly all systems were then transferred to PCs. It was around 2004 that we did the first superyachts with integrated PC-based systems.”

As integration developed in the early 2000s, really hitting its stride by around 2010, so the user interface began to fall under the eye of bridge manufacturers and integrators. “User interfaces are an area I really feel quite strongly on,” says Blake emphatically. “I’ve seen so many user interfaces (GUI) from a technical standpoint and they are very difficult for a new user to absorb, whether that’s an app on your computer or on a Crestron control system, and I believe that we have to design better GUIs. A good interface revolves around human brain works, and the human brain can typically only absorb seven elements of information at a time.”

So what is the control interface of the now and the future? Technology has finally made possible Minority Report-style gesture control transparent screens, although Blake no longer believes these are the future for the bridge. “We introduced that around five years ago,” he explains, “but it became tiresome to always have my hands in space not touching anything but using gestures. So I think speech control is the next progression point.” He also points to augmented reality as a likely essential component of the future bridge.

Of course, any major changes in tech or interface face an additional hurdle – getting approval by class and other regulatory bodies. “From the point of view of regulations I have the feeling the IMO will still in five or even 10 years have more or less the same regulations as today. They are quite slow,” says Grunwald. “When you look at augmented reality or head-up displays, this is all coming in other areas of our lives, but from a regulation point of view I would say that we will still have two radars and two workstations as now on an IMO boat.”

For Grunwald, the progression on the bridge is more likely to be behind the scenes. “When you look at your desk it’s not that different from 25 years ago – you still have a keyboard, a mouse and a screen,” he explains. “I think we will see a dramatic change in the software [of bridge systems] and its capability but not necessarily in the hardware and the hardware interface.”

Software, it seems, really will be key in the future. “The challenge we are facing today, if we think about third party integration, is coping with all the different interfaces,” says Philip Kankelfitz, megayacht segment lead at Raytheon Anschütz. “But I can see that the architecture of the software running on bridges is becoming more flexible, so it will become way easier to make everything look like it’s from one maker. And 20 years ago everything was standalone, dedicated equipment where as today it’s just a standard computer for radar and ECDIS. Tomorrow it could be just a big processor running the different types of software – I see a change from dedicated hardware to a very flexible software architecture.”

For Blake, the future could mean losing even the glass bridge of today. “I firmly believe mixed reality glasses will be the way the captain will navigate and use the information that’s up there on the bridge,” he concludes. “Rather than scanning across seven or eight LCD screens, why not have that information in front of him all the time and in a subset format? Mixed reality and augmented reality will be very important up on the bridge.”

10 of the best superyacht wheelhouses

The wheelhouse is much more than just the room where the captain spends the majority of their time. It provides some of the best views out across the ocean and is the perfect place for plotting your next adventure. With high-tech gadgets and touch-screen galore, we pick out some honourable mentions...

Taking inspiration from the look of smaller, sporty yachts with raised pilothouses, the wheelhouse on board Heesen's 51-metre Irisha is half a deck up from the upper saloon level and sits beneath a 2000kg glass canopy. At the touch of a button, a portion of the canopy and the rear glass bulkheads slide open, linking the bridge to the sundeck. Irisha was designed to be used as a day boat and the wheelhouse is an extension of its social spaces, complete with a big sofa and table perched behind the helm station with its Besenzoni carbon fibre helm chairs.

The owner of the newly-refitted Istros decided to keep the original teak wheel in what is now a paperless wheelhouse. Children, he thought, would get a kick out of turning it, but he did not care if it worked. The shipyard could not abide the idea of a decorative wheel, so they rigged it to work with the modern electronics. “It works flawlessly; that’s the only thing we used on sea trials,” say Dibbits. “All the captain has to do is to make sure he disengages it when the kids play with it.” The traditional teak wheel is an eye-catching piece in the otherwise white pilothouse.

The wheelhouse on board the 101 metre Kusch Yachts masterpiece I Dynasty boldly goes where no helm design has gone before. Step into the Starship Enterprise-style bridge and you can almost hear the captain say: “Warp speed, Mr. Sulu.” In reality, I Dynasty boasts a more leisurely top speed of 17 knots.

More about this yacht

The 69-metre Benetti Spectre sports a sleek carbon-fibre-clad paperless bridge by TEAM Italia with foldable screens and a large digital chart table. The I-Bridge system adapts to each captain's preferred set-up with interchangeable views with high-definition screens that tilt up and down or lay flush in a console. Another impressive component is an IMO-approved 46-inch chart table, which is multifunctional and interactive and allows the sharing of trip-planning information and “infotainment” with guests. All controls are neatly organised and condensed, including three redundant 4K 32-inch touch panels for steering and onboard safety systems such as sprinklers, watertight and fire doors, and three multifunction controls with joggers, trackball and OLED systems used for radar, electronic chart display, CCTV and thermal cameras.

Incat Crowther's 66-metre "floating toy box" Hodor is packed with some of the coolest kit money can buy. On deck she boasts an Airbus H145, nine-metre Metal Shark landing craft and a 120-knot 288 Skater race boat with two enormous cranes for launch and recovery. Below, there's a submarine, four Yamaha TW200 trail motorcycles, two Yamaha ATVs, and the biggest beast of all, a 17-metre Nor-Tech 560 Sport centre console. It's a pretty serious operation, to say the least, and at the heart of all the action lies the bridge. Here, the interior forgoes the flashes of orange across her exterior and opts for a calmer blue, with a walkaround main helm console and equipment by RH Marine.

Scout 's fantastical interior sits somewhere between Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 film Metropolis, and its wheelhouse is no exception. Captain Kynan McDonald had free rein to design it and opted for a ship-like arrangement with a floating console. Not only does this give critical visibility at night but it means all of the equipment can be easily accessed from the rear. A large chart table separates two raised sofas for guests or an extra watch.

Feadship's 83.5-metre Savannah is one of the most decorated superyachts in history after scooping three ShowBoats Design Awards and a World Superyacht Award in her first year. Her seafoam exterior and crisp lines turn heads wherever she travels and her underwater Nemo lounge is the first of its kind. Teal leather chairs and parquet flooring make for a swanky wheelhouse and its panels are made to match her silvery exterior. In year one, Savannah cruised 14,000 nautical miles without a hitch. “The boat rides like a dream," said build captain Ted McCumber. “Everything that is on Savannah has been done before, but never all in one vessel, and this is what makes her so special."

White Rabbit

There are a number of superlatives attached to the mighty 84-metre White Rabbit. Delivered by Echo Yachts in 2018, she is not only the largest trimaran in the world but the largest yacht to ever be built in Australia. At just under 3,000 GT, White Rabbit is a serious piece of machinery, commanded by her wheelhouse that almost stretches the yacht's entire 20-metre beam. White Rabbit is the first project installed with Navis newly redesigned state-of-the-art panels used for a fully integrated remote control system. Despite her size, she's blissfully quiet and efficient too, powered by a diesel-electric engine with a range of 5000 nautical miles.

Cloud 9 is the second 62Steel hull to hit the water is one of Sanlorenzo's biggest launches to date. Its wheelhouse is located high up on the third deck ensuring the best visibility for manoeuvring the yacht in all conditions in both open or restricted waters. The space is simple but sophisticated - a theme that continues throughout the rest of the interior.

One of the biggest jobs of Genesia's almighty conversion was to give her a proper yacht wheelhouse – but one that would also match her ship’s credentials. The original bridge configuration was typical of a tug - small and narrow with front and rear steering stations. The space was completely rethought and built anew with a transversal orientation, which allowed positioning of an integrated bridge by Böning/Furuno in the centre between two internal wing stations. Typical of many commercial ships, instead of wipers the bridge window is fitted with a clearview screen to deflect rain, snow or ice. The centre part of the circular screen rotates at high speed to prevent rain or snow from sticking. The panorama from up here is optimal and a comfortable banquette allows guests to enjoy the view. “My favourite area,” says the owner, “is the wheelhouse because I like to navigate. It’s dramatic and fantastic.”

30 Types of Navigation Equipment and Resources Used Onboard Modern Ships

Gone are the days when a ship navigation officer had to take help of unconventional ways to plan and navigate a voyage at sea. Today, a ship officer has myriad of marine navigation equipment which makes his life a lot simpler, thanks to the advancement in technology.  Moreover, present-day seafarers are trained so as to know the functioning and operation of all modern day navigational equipment that has made the journey at sea smoother and safer.

With modern day facilities and automation, a ship today has several advanced navigation equipment systems which give accurate data for the voyage.

navigation bridge

Herein, we have enlisted 30 types of navigational equipment, both old and new, which are present on all merchant ships.

1.   Gyro Compass

It is used for finding the right direction. Unlike magnetic compass, gyro compass is not hampered by an external magnetic field.  It is used to find the correct North Position, which is also the earth’s rotational axis to provide a stable directional source. Its repeater system must be present in the steering platform for emergency steering.

The seagoing vessels depend on S-band and X-band frequency radar system for navigation as it can detect targets and display the information on the screen such as the distance of the ship from land, any floating objects (an island, rocks, iceberg etc.), other vessels, and obstacles to avoid a collision. It is a rotating antenna which discovers the surrounding area of the ship.

3.   Magnetic Compass

The magnetic compass work in conjunction with the magnetic field of the earth and is the essential means of the direction indicating device. It is used to get a planned course for the voyage. This ship navigation equipment is usually fitted at the centre line of the ship on the monkey island.  A transmitting magnetic type compass is fitted so that the output can be displayed in the bridge panel.

4.   Auto Pilot

The ship bridge layout is filled with equipment and tools used for navigation. The autopilot is considered to be one of the most effective bridge navigational equipment as it assists the human operator in controlling the ship by keeping the steering in autopilot, which allows them to concentrate on broad aspects of the operation.

ship bridge

It is a combination of hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical system and is used to control the ship’s steering system from a remote location (Navigation bridge).

Automatic Radar Plotting Aid displays the position of a ship and other vessels nearby. The radar displays the position of the ships in the vicinity and selects the course for the vessel by avoiding any kind of collision.

This bridge navigational equipment constantly monitors the ship’s surrounding and automatically acquires the number of targets, in this case; ships, boats, stationary or floating objects etc., and plot their speeds and courses respectively. It also presents them as vectors on the display screen and constantly update the parameters with each turn of the antenna by calculating their nearest points of approach to own ship and also the time before this will occur.

6.   Automatic Tracking Aid

Just like ARPA, automatic tracking aid displays the information on tracked targets in graphic and numeric to generate a planned layout for a safer and collision-free course.

Usually, A large size target measuring 800 m or more in the circumference is considered as a landmass and not tracked. Echoes less than 800 m are deemed as targets to be tracked.

8.   Echo Sounder

There are many modern ship navigation tools present on ship and echo sounder is one of the instruments which has been in the play from almost 100 years now. It is used to measure the depth of the water below the ship’s bottom using sound waves which work on the principle of transmission of sound waves and an audio pulse which will bounce off a reflecting layer, returning as an echo to the source.

9.   Electronic Chart Display Information System

ECDIS

ECDIS is a development in the navigational chart system used in naval vessels and ships. With the use of the electronic navigation equipment, it has become easier for a ship’s navigating crew to pinpoint locations, and attaining directions are easier than before.

10. Automatic Identification system

AIS is also among the types of a navigation system which helps to pinpoint the location and other navigational statistics of ships. AIS uses VHF radio channels as transmitters and receivers to send and receive messages between ships which endeavours to fulfil a lot of responsibilities.

As per the regulation enforced by The International Maritime Organisation (IMO), all passengers’ vessels and commercial ships over 299 Gross Tonnage (GT)  sailing in the international to carry a Class A AIS transponder.

12. Rudder Angle Indicator

Rudder angle indicator, as the name indicates, provides the angle of the rudder. The display is provided on the navigation bridge equipment console so that the ship navigation officer can control the rate of turn and rudder angle of the ship. The indication is also provided in the bridge wing and engine control room.

13. Voyage Data Recorder

A VDR or voyage data recorder is a crucial instrument among the ship navigation equipment list which is installed on a ship to continuously record vital information related to the operation of a vessel. It contains a voice recording system for a period of at least the last 12 hours. This recording is recovered and made use of for investigation in events of accidents. The importance of VDR is similar to a “black box” installed on an airplane.

14. Rate of turn indicator

This navigational tool indicates how fast the ship is turning at a steady rate (useful during pilotage and manoeuvring ) , normally shown as a number of degrees turned. The rate a ship is turning is measured in degrees per minute. This essential tool assists a coxswain in steering a course safely.

15. GPS Receiver

A  Global Positioning System  (GPS) receiver is a display system used to show the ship’s location with the help of Global positioning satellite in the earth’s orbit.

With the record of the ship’s positions, the speed, course, and the time is taken to cover the distance between “two marked positions” can be calculated.

16. Sound Reception System

This acoustic system is required for a ship with a fully enclosed type bridge. It enables the navigating officer inside the cabin to listen to the sound signals (such as fog or ship’s horn) from other ships in the vicinity. This is fitted in ships bridge equipment console and helps the navigating officer to conduct the look-out duty as per the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.

17. Navigational Lights

All boats – whether big or small are required to have night lights as a part of the navigation systems. This system was introduced in the year 1838 by the United States and then was followed by the United Kingdom in 1849. In the year 1889, the International Maritime Conference was established by the United States to establish proper guidelines to prevent marine accidents. In the year 1897, these rules were officially adopted internationally. The navigation lights are one of the most critical navigation equipment needed for sailing in high seas as it enables self vessel being clearly visible to other ships in the vicinity.

18. Ship Whistle

A ship’s horn is known as a whistle and it is generally provided in duplicate. One is driven by air and the other is electrically operated. The whistle should be both manually and electrically operational from the bridge.

Among different instruments used in difficult navigation such as bad weather, fog, poor visibility, high traffic etc., the ship’s whistle or horn helps in alerting the nearby vessels.

During an emergency, the horn is used to notify and alert the ship’s crew and other vessels nearby.

19. Daylight Signalling Lamp

They are light-signalling devices used for   emergency signalling   in the day time (and can also be used during the night). Like other emergency ship instruments, the energy source for the lamp is not solely dependent on the ship’s main power supply. Also, the lamp enclosure should be weather and seawater- proof material.

20. Pilot Card

It is an informative booklet provided to the ship’s   pilot . It consists of the dimension, draught, turning circle, manoeuvring, propulsion equipment and other navigation tools and instruments list of the vessel for safe manoeuvring.

Superyacht Glossary: Terms You Will Need To Know

Are you starting a yachting career but not from a boating background? Then, it’s time to get across the superyacht jargon to feel well-versed on your first boat or day working experience. Here’s a glossary of terms about your new workplace.

yacht bridge equipment

The Basics: Navigating Your Way Around the Boat

Bow : Front of the boat. (Pointy end.)

Stern : Back of the boat. (Blunt bit.)

Foredeck . Forward deck.

Aft deck : Rear deck.

Midships : The halfway point between bow and stern. Also, amidships.

Port : Left-hand side of the boat (when facing the bow).

Starboard : Right-hand side of the boat (when facing the bow).

Quarter : A yacht can be divided into quarters, and this can help a captain direct their crew where to go on deck. Port Bow and Starboard Bow cover the two areas from midships up to the bow. Port Quarter and Starboard Quarter cover the areas running aft from midships to the stern.

Beam : Width of the yacht at its widest point.

Draft/draught : Depth of the yacht under the waterline.

Hull : The ’base’ of the boat. Everything from the main decking down.

Superstructure : Everything built on top of the hull. (Upper decks)

Bridge/Wheelhouse : Where the captain drives the boat. An interior space on an upper deck with good visibility across the front of the yacht to sea.

Flybridge : A secondary exterior helm station where the captain drives the boat from the yacht’s top deck. The flybridge is outdoors and offers almost 360-degree visibility.

Cockpit : An area on deck where the captain drives the boat (sailboat). Also, often a seating/dining area.

Helm : The yacht wheel and steering system. One can ’stand at the helm’, ’go to the helm’ or even ’helm the boat’.

Galley : Where the magic happens. (Never call it a kitchen!)

Forepeak : A compartment/large locker or cabin located up in the nose of the boat, under the foredeck. On small sailing boats, the crew may live in the forepeak cabin.

Swim platform : A platform at the back of the boat, off the aft deck, for swimming and launching the water toys.

Transom : The vertical span across the stern where the boat’s name is written.

Passerelle : The gangplank! There’s nothing like walking across a superyacht passerelle for the first time. (Remember, never step on the passerelle with your shoes on).

Lazarette : Storage in the boat’s stern, under the aft deck area, is generally where the water toys are stored.

Main Salon : The formal lounge space on the main deck. Adjoins typically the formal dining room, often as an open-plan space.

Sky Lounge : Upper salon. A comfortable lounge space, generally with a large-screen TV, card/occasional tables and possibly a piano.

Sundeck : Top deck of a motor yacht, where you’ll find sunbeds, BBQ, a bar, a dining table, and a Jacuzzi.

Stateroom : Cabin. Across the industry, superyacht cabins are increasingly called staterooms or suites on larger yachts. However, in practice, crew generally continue to call them cabins —or they cut off the word altogether, instead saying ’clean the master/VIP/starboard forward’ etc.

Head and Day head :   In sailor-speak, a ’head’ is a boat toilet. On superyachts, it’s relatively uncommon to call a bathroom a head, except in one crucial leftover case: the day head. This small toilet/washroom is one that guests will use when they want to avoid going back to their cabin to use the bathroom. On superyachts, they are located on the main and upper decks and occasionally on the sundeck.

Note that you’ll still hear some crew say, ’I’m going to use the head’ instead of ’I’m going to the toilet/bathroom’ because the word ’head’ is much more common on sailboats than motor yachts.

yacht bridge equipment

Lines and Equipment

Bow Line/Aft Line : The rope tied from the bow/aft to the dock stops the vessel from moving when in its berth.

Spring Line : A line tied diagonally from the bow or stern to a point on the dock to stop the yacht from moving forwards or backwards.

Cleat : A piece of stainless steel fixed to the deck or capping rails that lines are tied to.

Bulwark : The sides of a motor yacht that rise up from the deck. (The outside bit that stops you from falling off).

Capping rail : The rail on top of the bulwark, which is usually varnished to a high gloss.

Fender : The strong rubber ’balloons’ suspended over the sides of the yacht to protect the paintwork when the yacht is docked or manoeuvring in or out of berths.

Stabiliser : Underwater systems to reduce the yacht rolling at sea. Zero-speed stabilisers are stabilisers that work both at anchor and underway.

Tender : A small boat used to ferry guests ashore, get supplies, take rubbish in etc. There’s a vast range of tenders, including high-speed and limousine tenders, which are covered tenders that protect the guests from wind and sea spray.

Rescue tender : A rescue tender is a tender over 3.8m that is classed as one of the yacht’s vessels for rescue operations under SOLAS guidelines. It has certain safety specifications but can also be used for everyday boat operations, just like a standard tender, so you’ll often hear the captain say, ’Take the rescue tender’.

Other Yachting Terms You’ll Need To Know

An APA is a sum, usually 25-35% of the charter fee, that the charterer will pay in advance so that the yacht crew can stock the yacht with food, drink, and fuel and have money in the kitty for things like berthing fees. Any unused money at the end of the trip is returned to the charterer.

Bimini : A shade awning.

Bulkheads : The yacht’s internal walls and watertight compartments.

Ensign : The yacht’s flag, indicating which country it is registered in. Note that yachts are only sometimes registered in the nationality of the people that own them. And also that a yacht is legally considered a tiny, floating part of the country whose flag it flies and therefore operates under its laws and jurisdiction.

Knot : A measure of speed used on boats equal to one nautical mile (1.8km/hr).

Nautical Mile : Different from land miles! A nautical mile (1852m) is longer than a land mile (1609m).

Preference sheet : The form a charterer fills out to inform the yacht’s crew of their preferences regarding food, drink, activities etc. This preference sheet is given to the senior crew before the charter so the captain, chef, and chief stew can prepare the yacht for the charter.

Pullman : A pull-down berth to add an extra bed. These pull-down wall-mounted bunks are usually found in twin cabins for a third bed.

Phew! See? You’re already an expert :)
