Argentina is not exactly a nation known for its yachtbuilding excellence, so the new Altamar 50 will naturally be subject to intense scrutiny: How well was she designed? How carefully was she built? Such close inspection may not sound fair, but that’s the way it goes in this competitive market.

Well, you can dissect the Altamar 50 and examine her with a microscope, and what you will find is a superbly constructed, luxuriously appointed motoryacht fit to run with the world’s finest.

Her exterior styling is clearly European-inspired, with Italianate windows, a cantilevered flying bridge/electronics arch and ovoid ports below the sheer. The Altamar is thoroughly modern-but without the gewgaw design elements that would make her lines feel dated.

The 50’s handlaid fiberglass construction is conventional and does not have coring, resulting in a solid construction that allows owners to cruise without fear of rot or water absorption. The grid-like stringers also are free of wood and, after being molded separately, are thoroughly tabbed and glassed in place. Below the waterline, the Altamar 50’s exterior is finished with osmosis-inhibiting resins. Even the bilge is finished in immaculate white Awlgrip.

The rest of the yacht is a case of importing before exporting.

“Wood, leather and labor. That’s what we provide from Argentina”, said Altamar Yacht U.S.A. representative Ruben Berestan. “Everything else is chosen from the best in the world: European hardware and all-American systems and equipment.”

Her interior is finished in a South American ash with a delicate, pale grain, though cherry is optional. With a building schedule that yields just one Altamar 50 per month, owners can choose their own woods and leathers.

The curved settee in the saloon wraps around a burled maple Hi-Lo table and faces a cabinet to starboard, which houses the entertainment center. Large tinted windows provide a good view even to those who are seated, and the high overhead makes the large area seem even larger.

The galley, to starboard, is likely to polarize opinions: People will either love it or hate it. It is a true “down galley”, sunken into the saloon sole and semi-enclosed by a curved bulkhead that is open at the top. The strength of this arrangement is that it allows for a full-size refrigerator/freezer without blocking the view in the saloon, and it cleverly uses the areas under the saloon sole for counter space and stowage. The downside is that the galley is, well, down. I happen to like the arrangement for its openness; this way, the cook can remain part of the conversation. Those who dislike the arrangement can opt for a galley-up layout at the expense of space in the saloon.

The lower galley provides access to the crew cabin, which has a single berth, sink and head, all tucked under the saloon. Entry to this area is a bit tight, but it’s perfect for kids, who will love having their own “apartment close to the snacks. An alternate arrangement uses this space for a pantry.

A step up from the saloon is the pilothouse, where a banquette to port curves around a cocktail table. To starboard is a stylish, leather-finished dash with an array of Volvo Penta gauges and a full complement of standard electronics (radar, GPS, chart plotter, VHF and more). A comfortable double leather seat is for the skipper and a companion. At the skipper’s elbow is the electrical panel. The real beauty-its flawlessly loomed and neatly labeled wiring-lies behind a hinged panel.

Comfortable stairs lead below to a foyer, which is open to the windshield above, creating a skylight effect. The owner’s cabin with a double island berth fills the bow. The cabin’s two hanging lockers are actually suitable for hanging clothing, and built-in shelves are provided for sundries. A private head with a bull-nosed Corian counter and shower is to port.

Two surprisingly spacious guest cabins are just aft on either side of the stairs. The identical cabins have twin berths and large hanging lockers, and they share an oversize day head with a grated teak sole, Ferrum sink and Lucite shower enclosure.

The shallow flying bridge is tucked behind a wraparound venturi windscreen. A curved settee is opposite the doublewide helm and the console matches the one in the pilothouse. A wet bar with a barbecue is behind the helm seat. A large sunpad is aft, and a stainless-steel rail protects the cockpit stairs. The electronics arch is stylishly low, but our test boat had a rather awkward raised radome. (This is for clients worried about the potential health hazards of microwave exposure.) The wings on the arch are sized to handle satcom installations.

The teak-planked afterdeck is roomy enough for a dining table by the bench seat, which is centered between doors leading to the swim platform. Protected by topside extensions, this area also has plenty of room for a tender or PWC. A sunpad is forward. On our test boat, the sloping deck and the area around the anchor windlass were without a nonslip surface, a dangerous omission. Berestan said the problem would be corrected on future 50s.

Hands-on owners will delight in the engineroom, which has a diamond-plate sole and great access to steering and seacocks. A 13kW Kohler genset is standard, with room for a second generator. Three banks of batteries and a Heart Interface inverter provide power for quiet nights, and dual Marine Air air-conditioning units should handle the hottest weather with ease. Thoughtful touches include a notch in each engine bed to allow easy access to the shaft log, as well as sight gauges on water and fuel tanks.

On the day of our sea trial, the Atlantic was full of Sturm und Drang, including gray-beard rollers marked by spatters of rain, but the 50 handled conditions with aplomb. Up sea, down sea, beam sea; she was stable and solid, with nary a creak. Our test boat was powered by standard 480 hp Volvo Penta TAMD74 diesels, which are virtually bulletproof. The choppy seas and a foul bottom, however, took a toll on our test results-Berestan was disappointed with our top speed of 25 knots. (The boat should make about 30 knots, according to Volvo Penta.) Trim tabs are standard but not needed, since the Altamar came up to a plane flat and fast.

Argentina might not be on your shortlist of hot yachtbuilding nations, but if the well-equipped Altamar 50 is any indication, you may soon find yourself adding it.

The 88-foot (26.8m) cockpit motor yacht Altamar is a proven coastal cruiser, having made numerous trips up and down the Pacific coast between Alaska and Mexico.

Motor yacht Altamar’s main salon showcases large windows that provide stunning views and let in ample natural light. Her main salon features comfortable seating and a serving bar starboard, while formal dining f Motor yacht Altamar’s exterior is timeless. The yacht’s flybridge is perfect for entertaining or just relaxing with its L-shaped lounge with cocktail table under a hardtop. Altamar’s helm is equipped with a full complement of electronics. In 2010, Altamar underwent a thorough exterior, mechanical and interior refit, that included adding timber salon panels, new furnishings and décor, two new generators. The yacht's electronics were also updated and all systems were gone through.

Accommodation

Altamar accommodates eight guests in three staterooms. Her full-beam master stateroom features a built-in vanity, love seat, large cedar-lined closet and en-suite bath with Jacuzzi tub and separate shower. The yacht offers two guest staterooms, both with queen-size beds and a single bed; both staterooms are complete with their own en-suite baths. Altamar also has two crew staterooms forward.

Scientists have a theory for why orcas keep ramming yachts

• A group of scientists now argues it's because the orcas are bored and feeling playful. 

Orcas have been causing mayhem off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco for the past several years, causing problems for local sailors by ramming and bumping their boats .

But a group of scientists now believes these orcas don't have malicious intent — but rather are just being silly .

The group, consisting of over a dozen scientists and orca experts who've been studying the region's orcas for years, explained its findings in a report from the International Whaling Commission published Friday.

The Portuguese and Spanish governments commissioned the report in response to a spate of incidents in which a small group of orcas around the Iberian Peninsula had rammed into — and sometimes sank — at least 673 boats since 2020.

Despite the damage the orcas have done, the scientists argue that the orcas are not trying to be aggressive or destructive but are just like bored teenagers looking for a bit of fun.

"The sea is a very boring place for an animal," Renaud de Stephanis, the president of Conservation, Information, and Research on Cetaceans , a marine-life preservation organization, told USA Today . "Imagine if you're a dog or some other mammal, you can interact with objects around you. But in the sea there's not much for the orcas to interact with, so they play with the rudders."

The report suggested young juvenile orcas, who tend to be more curious and exploratory, started the trend, which then spread through the population.

And orcas, like humans, love following trends.

The highly intelligent and social mammals are known to experience "fads" within their pods . For example, past orca populations have even gone around wearing dead salmon as hats , for no other apparent reason than everyone else was doing it.

This long series of boat-ramming incidents could be no different.

"The orcas don't know that the interactions with the boats causes problems to humans," Alex Zerbini, the chair of the International Whaling Commission's scientific committee , who worked on the report, told Business Insider. "For them this is like a game."

"The key message is that there is not evidence that this behavior is aggressive or that the whales are 'attacking' the boats," Zerbini added. "This appears to be a fad, which plays a role in the orcas cultural development."

But why now? The scientists say it's likely because the tuna population, which is the Iberian killer whales' primary food source, has dramatically increased in recent years, giving the orcas more time away from hunting.

And with all that free time, the apex predators have chosen to have a little fun. But don't worry: Even if an orca does ram and sink your ship, you're probably not in danger . No one has been injured in any of the incidents so far.

Los hogares españoles aún están echando cuentas de lo que les va a costar de más disfrutar de sus vacaciones este próximo verano. La inflación sigue presionando al alza el precio de vuelos y en especial de los hoteles. Dormir en una habitación de hotel se ha convertido en un lujo, si se tiene en cuenta que e l precio medio se situó en 135 euros al cierre del primer trimestre y que la fuerte demanda que se está registrando para verano anticipa una nueva subida para los próximos meses. Una factura inasumible para muchas familias sin endeudarse.

En este contexto de crecimiento sin freno de los precios, los turistas, tanto residentes como extranjeros, han encontrado alternativas más asequibles en España para poder ajustar su presupuesto. Y muchos de ellos han optado por cambiar el hotel por un barco. “El alquiler de embarcaciones ha crecido un 42% en los dos últimos años en España”, recalca Edouard Gorioux, uno de los dos consejeros delegados de Click & Boat , la principal plataforma de alquiler de barcos en Europa, con dos millones de usuarios y más de 55.000 embarcaciones disponibles.

En una entrevista con CincoDías , coincidiendo con el décimo aniversario de la compañía, Gorioux destaca que ese crecimiento de la demanda (una reserva cada 18 segundos) ha tenido un reflejo directo en el aumento del peso de España en el número de clientes de la plataforma y en la flota disponible. “España se ha convertido en el segundo mercado más importante para la compañía, solo por detrás de Francia, con 200.000 clientes, un 10% de los dos millones de la compañía, y con 6.000 embarcaciones, un 11% del total”, recalca.

Esas cifras son una respuesta directa de los clientes a la “experiencia única” de navegar o dormir en altamar, a lo que se une la mejor tarifa de los barcos frente a los hoteles. “El precio medio de contratar un día de navegación para seis personas es de 350 euros, incluida la pernoctación. Es un precio similar al de una habitación de cuatro estrellas para solo dos personas”, señala el directivo, que destaca lo heterogéneo de la demanda en España, “ya que incluye familias, parejas, grupos de amigos, aunque todos con una misma intención, ya que más de la mitad contrata el barco con patrón”.

Tras diez años de actividad, la compañía cerró 2023 con su primer beneficio y con unos ingresos que superaron por primera vez los 200 millones de euros, de los que el 15% (30 millones) procedieron de la actividad generada en España. El plan de negocio de la compañía, que recibió una fuerte inyección de dinero a través de empresas asesoradas por Permira , contempla que la cifra de negocio se multiplique por dos veces y media en los próximos tres años hasta alcanzar los 500 millones en el arranque de 2027. En paralelo a ese crecimiento, la compañía prepara el despliegue de su plan de transición energética para transformar su flota y darle un peso cada vez más predominante a los barcos eléctricos.
