30m Galateia wins Maxi A class at PalmaVela regatta

The 30-metre Wally sailing yacht Galateia has won the Maxi A class at the PalmaVela regatta for the second year in a row. The Wallycento model and her crew achieved a near-perfect scoreline across the four-day regatta, disrupted only by fellow WallyCento and racing royalty Magic Carpet3 who took the win on Friday's second windward-leeward race.

The WallyCento model also won the trophy for best-placed International Maxi Association member, marking a confident start for her 2023 IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge campaign.

The 19th edition of the PalmaVela Regatta kicked off the Mediterranean racing season on 3 May at Real Club Nautico de Palma and marked the opening event for the International Maxi Association’s 2023 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

Over 110 boats from across 20 different nations took to the bay, with nine Maxis divided between two classes; the faster yachts in Maxi A and the classics in Maxi B. The regatta saw optimum weather conditions for the first half, with lighter-than-forecast winds for the remainder of the last two days.

A strong start from Galateia , helmed by David Leuschen, meant she completed the first race in two hours and 29 minutes, putting considerable distance between her competitors. Keeping the Reichel/Pugh-Nauta 84 Vera and the 30.4-metre Wally Magic Carpet Cubed astern.

The penultimate and final days saw more challenging racing, weather-wise, with a slow start from the light and variable winds. Galateia and Magic Carpet Cubed battled it out until the finishing line where Galateia consolidated their overall lead, second place was secured by Magic Carpet Cubed and bronze was awarded to Vera.

“Palma has always been very kind to us. Maybe it is because the boat is based here! It is the third or fourth time we have raced here, and we have had good luck every time,” said Leuschen. “We have got a great crew that we continue to tweak, and we seem to learn something new every race: Today, we did a gybe peel just before the finish – the crew did a masterful job."

Besides the standout leaders, other competitors in the class included another Wally named Rose , Reichel/Pugh-Nauta 100 Morgana and the Vismara 68 Pelotari Project .

The IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge continues soon, on 15-18 May, with inshore races taking place in Sorrento. Galateia’s racing schedule will include the race next month at the Rolex Giraglia, and the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in September, before ending the season at Les Voiles de Saint Tropez.

Wally Cento Galateia wins Maxi Division at PalmaVela

The Wally Cento Galateia won the IRC-IMA Maxi division at Mallorca’s big boat season opener PalmaVela with a perfect scoreline of six wins from six starts. Victory in a final light-winds coastal race back-and-forth across the Bay of Palma maintained their perfect tally to win by eight points ahead of Andrea Recordati’s recently acquired Wally 93 Bullit. Second place today ensured the Italian flagged team finished runners-up at their first competitive outing on the boat.

In the fleet of seven Maxis, four of them 100 feet or bigger, Galateia again finished more than two minutes ahead after time correction, leading all the way around the 30 nautical miles course.

“Once again it was not easy out there. But it was good fun and challenging. The breeze was quite streaky and changeable, sometimes filling right into the Bay and then withdrawing again so sometimes we were stretching away and sometimes losing to the fleet. It was a close race all the way until Magic Carpet had an issue with their kite and then even after that it was close with Bullit. I think we had a good week, we had fun.” Palma’s Jordi Calafat, 470 Olympic gold medallist who is strategist on Galateia enthused.

Luna Rossa’s Francesco Bruni, Bullit’s tactician, confirmed the new owner and the team are delighted with their Palma debut, “We are super happy with second as we have never raced it before and so it was like racing a new boat, so to finish second is great. It is a hard boat to sail here in this class because it is slower than the big boats and so tactically it is difficult as you are always compromised by the big boats. But it is a nice boat, lighter and more agile than the others in some situations. The boat is still improving. We will make some small changes. Now we have a good feeling for how to improve the boat, like where to position the weight, improve the sail and mast set up.”

Today’s coastal race proved the decider in ORC Class 0-1 where the consistently successful DK46 Urbania which has Iñaki Castañer calling tactics sealed the class title by winning today’s long race whilst their nearest challengers, the Spanish Navy’s TP52 Aifos 500, could only make fourth. The chartered DK46 has won their class at Copa del Rey MAPFRE four years in a row with Luis Martínez Doreste in charge.

ORC Class 2 was won by another Real Club Náutico de Palma regular, Christian Plump and the Spanish Sailing Federation’s president Javier Sanz on the Club Swan 42 Elena Nova. With ace Palma Bay navigator Nacho Postigo guesting on the boat this week Elena Nova won two of the three races which were sailed.

“It was a little bit unlucky for our class that we only managed three races, as most had four or five, and so I think that if we had done more races then it would not have been the same for us, it would have been much more even. If there were five races then Plan B or M8 could have beaten us.” Said Postigo.

maxi yacht a vela

The visiting German team from Kiel YC on Immac Fram, the Italia 9.98 won both races today in ORC 4 to clinch their first ever win in the Mediterranean.

“We had sun, we had wind and we had two good races and took two bullets. We sorted out our communication issues before the start and so we are super happy to win. We could not be more happy.” Said Florian Schluender, mainsail trimmer. Second was Scott Beattie’s Andratx’s based J/97 Just the Job.

Nicolás González’s Dufour 40 Lady triumphed in ORC Class 4 counting all wins in their scoreline, “The performance of the boat has been excellent, we sailed to four first and in the end it was quite comfortable. The key is that we really do have a good crew. We have been sailing together for a long time and we really wanted to win.”

A last day surge by the Pez de Abril crew of José María Meseguer from Murcia gave them the Club Swan 42 title, “It’s been complete regatta in the sense that we have had all kinds of winds. And it has been really gorgeous. We have been able to improve more and more as a team and that is what has made the difference.”

Spain’s double Olympic silver medallist Natalia Vía-Dufresne and crew won the J/80 class whilst Germany’s Michael Zankel won the Dragon class on Pow Wow.

R/P Superyacht Galateia Perfect in Palmavela Maxi Class

Reichel/Pugh-designed 100' superyacht Galateia won the IRC-IMA Maxi Class at the International Maxi Association’s 2022 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge Palmavela with a perfect scoreline of six wins in six starts. In addition to the IMA Maxi class prize, Galateia also won the prize for the Best Placed IMA Member.

The Reichel/Pugh-designed 100' superyacht Galateia won the IRC-IMA Maxi Division at the International Maxi Association’s 2022 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge Palmavela, Real Club Nautico de Palma’s traditional season opener, with a perfect scoreline of six wins in six starts. Over the four race days competitors underwent a ‘complete test’ with conditions spaning a solid 20-22 knots gusting to mid-20s on the opening day before dropping to the weekend’s lighter sea breeze.

maxi yacht a vela

Originally launched in 2004 as Maxi Race Week, IMA Maxi class welcomed a resurgence of maxi yacht interest in the event as the Bay of Palma and Mallorca showed why it is one of yacht racing’s most popular venues.

  “We had a great week,” reflected Galateia’s Kiwi skipper Kelvin Harrap. “Sometimes you get a bit of momentum and confidence going and we had [six time America’s Cup winner] Murray Jones and [Olympic 470 gold medallist] Jordi Calafat sending us the right way. It was tricky, but with the changes we made over the winter the boat seems to be going a bit better: It is mainly sails and the way we are sailing the boat. The crew work was pretty good and the starts were going well. Sometimes you have a regatta where everything goes right.”

In addition to the IMA Maxi class prize, Galateia also won the prize for the Best Placed IMA Member.

20th palmavela day 1: galateia returns to defend palmavela title with a perfect start.

Photo of YachtBoatNews

At the 20th PalmaVela, the showcase curtain raiser for the Mediterranean racing season, a breezy opening pair of windward-leeward races on the Bay of Palma saw the Wally Cento Galateia make a strong start to defending their IRC-IMA Maxi division title that they won last year with a perfect scoreline.

With winds between 18 and 25 knots containing big shifts especially closer to the palma shoreline, galateia with owner david leuschen on the helm, won both races..

Galateia’s navigator Simon ‘SiFi’ Fisher, twice winner of The Ocean Race, and long time navigator on the big Wally yacht explained their return to PalmaVela, “Obviously PalmaVela is a really important event, it’s the first event of the season for us so we really get back together and check in and see what our performance is like. We obviously really enjoy sailing in Palma, it’s the home for this boat and so many of the crew have sailed here for a lot of years. It’s nice to come back to a place that we all enjoy and always delivers really good conditions.”

“It was a big first day, certainly an exciting first day back. We went out with the plan to just get through the day, warm up, check the boat is good. But we managed to race competitively, once the start gun went everyone starts racing hard and we had good, close racing with V and Leopard. So we are very happy with our result, but especially getting around the course with no problems.”

Fisher’s counterpart on Leopard, Welsh navigator Will Best reported, “We have to be pretty happy with today, it was pretty full on and we did well. Galateia is a bit more set up for windward-leeward racing.”

Also using PalmaVela as a great warm up for their season are the dominant J Class of the moment the Swedish flagged Svea, racing at the multiclass regatta for the first time. Winners of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup two years in a row Svea finished fifth and fourth. Tactician Bouwe Bekking commented, “I think for us on Svea it was more of an eye opener again. We were over the line early in one of the races and we had to turn back and of course then you’re on the back foot. Then we broke a jib, the clew ring broke so the first race was more or less over. We had a spinnaker set and it was all going really well but then we saw a little rip in the spinnaker as well so we decided on the second run we were going to sail bare headed because we only had the light spinnakers on board and so there was nothing to gain. With the second race, we actually had a nice race but it’s just one of these things. You can go practicing by yourself and you can feel like a world champion and then once you’re on the racecourse it’s a different beast.”

Ergin Imre’s Provezza win the 52 Super Series PalmaVela Sailing Week

After being disappointed to lose the 2023 circuit title on these same waters last year, Ergin Imre’s Provezza had a dream finish to the first regatta of this year. Winning the last race of seven sailed over three days of racing, the Turkish flagged team overshadowed the five times champions Doug DeVos’s Quantum Racing powered by American Magic.

WallyCento V at PalmaVela 2024 ©Laura G. Guerra / PalmaVela

“I think the difference with the team throughout many of the races this week was that we never gave up, there was an incident where we hit the mark but we fought back. Then we came seventh. That’s what makes the difference… to fight back.”, Imre said.

With Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s Interlodge in third and Takashi Okura’s Sled fourth, USA flagged boats take three of the top four places.

Tomorrow everyone sails

Three race areas for 13 classes will be in operation as the regatta reaches full strength with more than a hundred boats in the bay of Palma on Friday. Scheduled to race are Maxi, ORC 0, ORC 1, ORC 2, ORC 3, ORC 4-5, A2 0-3, A2 4-5, J80, J70, Dragon, 6 Meters and Spirit of Tradition, that will sail from 1:00 p.m.

Maxi Class after Day 1:  (five boats)

1. Galateia (David Leuschen), 1+1=2pts 2. Leopard 3 (Joost Schuijff), 3+2=5pts 3. V (Ole Hansen), 2+3=5pts

News International Maxi Association introduces Maxi European Championship for 2022

International maxi association introduces maxi european championship for 2022.

The International Maxi Association is to introduce a new European Championship for maxi yachts in 2022. Taking place over 14-20th May out of Sorrento, Italy, with racing based around the Gulf of Naples and Capri, the IMA Maxi European Championship will provide a complete test for competitors, with a mix of inshore and coastal courses and an overnight race.

Supported by Rolex, this first ever IMA Maxi European Championship is organised by the Circolo Remo e Vela Italia and the International Maxi Association   under the patronage of the FIV and in cooperation with Yacht Club Italiano and the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia. The International Maxi Association is officially tasked by the sport’s governing body, World Sailing, to oversee and develop maxi yacht racing internationally.

The championship will begin with the second oldest event in the Italian yachting calendar after the Rolex Giraglia – the Regata dei Tre Golfi offshore race, the 67th edition of which will set sail on Saturday 14th May.  This will start from a line off Naples’ magnificent Castel dell’Ovo, next to the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRVI) clubhouse in the Santa Lucia Marina. While the race previously was famous for its midnight start following a party for competitors at the CRVI, in these post-pandemic times, the race will instead depart at 1900 with a separate start for the maxi fleet.

The 150 mile course for the Regata dei Tre Golfi takes the boats northwest from Naples, around the island of Ponza before returning southeast. Competitors then have the choice of leaving Capri to port or starboard before rounding the Li Galli islands off the Amalfi coast, and then returning clockwise around the south side of Capri to the finish off the island’s Marina Grande.

maxi yacht a vela

Following this, over 17-20 May, the Championship will continue with up to six windward-leeward and coastal races – eligible to the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy - taking place on the north side of the Sorrentine peninsula and close to Capri. Set by the event’s own PRO Alfredo Ricci, courses will be on or around the Gulf of Naples with the magnificent backdrops of Capri, the Sorrentine peninsula and Mount Vesuvius. The schedule may include a race around Capri, passing the island’s famous landmarks such as the Faraglioni Islands and its Blue Grotto.

Open to all maxi yachts (ie with LH of >18.29m) having an IRC endorsed certificate, the IMA Maxi European Championship will form part of Tre Golfi Sailing Week.

The winner of the IMA Maxi European Championship does not have to have a European owner nor be a European flagged yacht. Results will carry a 1.25x weighting for the Regata dei Tre Golfi with the inshore races having a 1.0 coefficient, with one discard if four or more races are completed. While all the maxi yachts will start together, the fleet will be grouped into classes, but the event will still culminate in one IMA European Maxi Champion being crowned.

The IMA Maxi European Champion will receive the ROLEX Trophy, while there will be other trophies for the first European yacht; the highest placed IMA members; the line honours winners and winners of the Regata dei Tre Golfi and the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy and the podium placers in each class.

Due to berthing restrictions in Sorrento, entries will be limited to 25 and will be on a ‘first come, first served’ basis with priority given to IMA members, who also get to enjoy a 25% reduction in their entry fee.

Andrew McIrvine, Secretary General of the International Maxi Association commented: “We are greatly looking forward to holding this first ever IMA Maxi European Championship. We expect this first edition especially to be very popular and as spaces are likely to fill up rapidly I would advise owners/teams to register as soon as possible.”

Regata dei Tre Golfi will also be the third event of six in the International Maxi Association’s 2021-22 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge (MMOC) which began with last October’s Rolex Middle Sea Race and continues in 2022 with La Larga, the new offshore race of the Real Club Nautico de Palma’s PalmaVela on 30th April.

The Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy will be second event in the International Maxi Association’s 2022 Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge (MMIC). This begins next year with PalmaVela over 4-8 May and concludes in October with Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez.

Palma Vela 2022

About event

Start : Palma, Balearic Islands, Spain

Finish : Palma, Balearic Islands, Spain

PalmaVela is one of the best international regattas that opens the yachting season in the Mediterranean!

The international regatta PalmaVela rightfully occupies one of the first places in the yachting world and opens the season of great races in the Mediterranean. The organizer of the regatta is the Royal Palma Yacht Club (Real Club Náutico Palma), which opens its doors every year to yachtsmen on the most modern sailing boats.

The scale of the regatta and the number of participating classes of yachts are amazing. The entire sailing Beau monde comes to the picturesque bay of Palma: Wally, MAXI, TP52, SWAN, J80, the traditional IRC and ORC divisions, Dragons, and classic yachts. This is a real extravaganza of sails from the most modern racing boats to elegant 100-year-old yachts.

The PalmaVela regatta has recently attracted more and more crews. The high level of competition, famous sponsors, professional crews and modern yachts create an incredible atmosphere of this race.

The organizers of the regatta think not only about competitions but also about the interesting evening program with receptions and music.

Palma Vela 2022

from €2,200 / 11 days / 1 pers.

Offers and pricing

This is my first time, is this ok.

Beginners without experience can participate in the regatta, since on the yacht there is always a professional skipper with extensive experience who will teach you everything you need for your role on the boat. In addition, as a rule, there are experienced yachtsmen in the crew who will help you get settled and feel comfortable.

What is included and not included in the price?

As a rule, the cost of participation in the regatta includes:.

— accommodation on a yacht for the duration of the regatta;

— bed linen and towels;

— organizational fee;

— skipper services;

— the cost of mooring in marinas;

— basic sailing training;

— a yacht polo or t-shirts from the organizers.

Additional expenses you will need to pay:

— airplane tickets and transfer to the marina;

— a visa. However, we will give you an invitation and confirmation of accommodation booking for the embassy. Visas for sporting events are easy to get;

— personal expenses.

You cannot choose a team?

Events schedule.

The regatta consists of 3 intense days of short distance races and an active evening program.

There will be a trophy for the winner in each of the participating classes. Other trophies may be awarded and will be published on the Official Notice Board.

The route of the PalmaVela regatta is very interesting. It includes a variety of short-distance races (buoys) in the Gulf of Palma, which require active and coordinated work of the entire crew, and a route race of 25 miles. You won’t have time to relax! The picturesque bay of Palma de Mallorca, the Cathedral - the visiting card of the island, Bellver Castle, the unique atmosphere of the city and the wonderful warm weather also add to great impressions from the regatta.

No comments, be the first one!

Can i participate in a regatta if i don’t have yachting experience.

Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.

Will I be able to steer a yacht?

Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.

Where will I live during the regatta?

As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.

What will we eat?

The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.

Do you help with a visa?

We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.

Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?

Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.

How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?

Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.

What clothes do I need?

The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.

This week’s maxi yacht competition at the Real Club Nautico de Palma’s Palmavela is the strongest for several years, with a seven boat class racing under IRC, the four longest all being around 100ft in length. Competition takes place over four days from Thursday until Sunday.

Ever since the heyday of the IOR maxis back in the 1980s, Palma has been a popular venue in the maxi racing calendar, with competitors relishing the ideal sailing conditions on the Bay of Palma and along the Majorcan coast. In 2004, the Real Club Nautico de Palma introduced Maxi Race Week as the opening event of the Mediterranean season. Now known as Palmavela, and with a broader range of one design and handicap classes competing alongside the maxis, the event still maintains its position as first in the International Maxi Association’s annual Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.

Competition will be especially intense this week with three of the original four Wallycentos entered: the two Reichel-Pugh designs, Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones’ Magic Carpet Cubed and David M Leuschen’s Galateia, lining up with the Judel-Vrolijk design launched as Hamilton, then subsequently lengthened to 107 as Open Season and most recently acquired by 52 Super Series campaigner Jean-Luc Petithuguenin and rechristened Paprec Recyclage. They will be lining up with the Farr 100 Leopard 3 and her enthusiastic Dutch owner, with a veteran crew, many of whom campaigned her alongside original owner Mike Slade.

While these four will enjoy top competition on the water, in with a strong chance under IRC corrected time are several smaller maxis. These include Paul Berger’s Swan 80 Kallima and the sole Spanish maxi competing, Andrés Varela Entercanales’s Vismara Mills 68 Pelotari Project, which last weekend won line honours and her class on corrected time in Palmavela’s offshore race, La Larga. But all eyes will be on Bullitt, the competitive Wally 93 launched in 2018 as Nahita and recently acquired by Andrea Recordati, himself better known as the owner of the Wally 101 Indio.

maxi yacht a vela

How will they all fare? The forecast indicates that the seven maxis will get a complete test with a brisk, possibly too brisk, opening day when the northeast wind is forecast to be gusting above 25 knots and slowly backing. Into the northwest, it drops by around five knots on Friday before reverting back to early season sea breeze conditions over the weekend.

Galateia’s Kiwi strategist and helm coach Kelvin Harrap says he is looking forward to the competition. “A few boats have changed hands – like Bullitt and Paprec Recyclage. Then there’s Magic Carpet, us and Leopard – so it is a good fleet. It is going to be competitive. It will be interesting to see how we go rating-wise against the smaller boats who will be able to sail in clear air behind us as we’re battling it out together.”

Aside a few new headsails Galateia remains much the same as she was at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup last year, as is the crew including six time America’s Cup winner Murray Jones and with local knowledge coming from Jones’ Spanish former Alinghi teammate and Olympic 470 gold medallist, Jordi Calafat.

Harrap adds that he is looking forward to the test the varied weather conditions look set to provide as well as enjoying this year’s event being a little later and the temperature accordingly warmer.

Surprisingly given that she has raced in literally the four corners of the globe since she was launched in 2007, Leopard 3 has never before competed at Palmavela. “This is our first time here on Leopard, which is exciting with the new owners,” says the 100ft maxi’s perennial skipper Chris Sherlock. “And what a great turnout…everybody is lifting their game. It is going to be interesting with Bullitt out there, which is an unknown quantity, and Paprec – she hasn’t raced properly for a number of years; Magic Carpet Cubed and Galateia are always well sailed. So, several good boats and let’s see how it pans out. It is a [IRC] rating game as well. We have focussed on our rating, but then so has everyone else…”

Thursday’s big conditions should present few problems for Leopard 3, which holds the west to east Transatlantic record for yachts with powered winches. “It could be 25-30 knots on Thursday so we might do a course around the bay,” continues Sherlock. “Saturday and Sunday will be sea breeze-type days, so a good range of conditions for all the boats to show their strengths.”

The race program for the maxis competing at Palmavela comprises two days of coastal races and two of windward-leewards.

In addition to Palmavela, the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge also includes the Maxi Yacht Sorrento Trophy (part of the IMA Maxi European Championship) in mid-May, the inshore races of Rolex Giraglia, Copa del Rey MAPFRE, followed by the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez.

The Splendido Mare Cup Spring races in Portofino, reserved for maxi and mini maxi yachts, were won by Rinaldo Del Bono’s Reichel Pugh 78 Capricorno, which closed the week of races with a string of first places. Behind Capricorno , the fast Luciano Gandini’s Mylius 80  Twin Soul B and Carlo Alberini’s Pendragon maxi yacht.

” I dedicate the victory of these races – declared Alessandro del Bono at the finish line – to Portofino and to my crew. We have always sailed together and, once again, we have demonstrated the value of a boat that is still very fast.

At the helm of the exceptional Capricorno was an equally exceptional helmsman, Flavio Favini. Capricorno and Favini are two names that go hand in hand in the history of Italian yachting. In 1995, they won the Admiral’s Cup together, the most important race for offshore boats at the time, the only Italian boat to achieve this result. Other historic names in Italian sailing and this crew were on board, such as Stefano Rizzi, Alberto Fantini, Tiziano Nava, Matteo Plazzi and Oscar Tonoli, names that have made the history of Italian offshore sailing and the America’s Cup.

” We’re very satisfied not only with the results achieved by our boats and crews after a year and half of stop due to the pandemic” – says Mylius CEO Valentina Gandini – “but also with the general climate in which the first restart of the sector took place. We hope that the performance of Mylius and the general spirit with which all the shipyards, owners and partners have faced the occasion will be a good omen to consolidate more and more the presence and cooperation with the Splendido Mare Cup and, more generally, for the new boating season”. The third place went to Pendragon from Carlo Alberini’s Lightbay Sailing Team, another incredible yacht designed by Laurie Davidson – one of New Zealand’s best known and most successful yacht designers. On the water in Portofino Pendragon was able to count on the talent of Lorenzo Bodini and Slovenian champion Branko Brcin.

” On the eve of this beautiful event, well-organized by Yacht Club Italiano – I would never have thought I could aim for a top position,” explained Carlo Alberini , leader of the Lightbay Sailing Team. “Although I had unconditional confidence in my crew, I was aware that, due to the pandemic situation, the training hours were not what we would have liked: boats like Pendragon are very complex and being able to make the most of them is not something easy or obvious. It’s no coincidence that today, even though I was aware that I was risking third place, I would have liked to race, but at no time did the breeze give the feeling of being able to stretch out on the race course effectively. We say goodbye to Portofino with a smile on our faces, hoping to be able to do it again in Naples, where next weekend we will take part in the Regata dei Tre Golfi, a 150-mile long race across the Gulf of Naples”.

Bella Mente Racing

Bella Mente Racing to Launch New Maxi 72 Yacht this Summer

February 8, 2018 By Bella Mente 2 Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Media Pro Int’l, Kirsten Ferguson,  [email protected] , 401-330-7889

NEWPORT, R.I. (February 8, 2018) – Hap Fauth (Minneapolis, Minn./Naples, Fla.) and his team on Bella Mente Racing made their first big splash onto the grand prix racing scene back in 2006, and this year the three-time Maxi 72 World Champions are preparing to make more waves with the launch of a new state-of-the-art Maxi 72 yacht. Designed by Botin Partners and built by New England Boatworks, the yacht is the fourth under the  Bella Mente  namesake and is set to be unveiled this July in Newport, R.I., just in time to be shipped to Porto Cervo, Sardinia for the 2018 Rolex Maxi 72 Worlds in September.

“I’m excited to dive into the development and build of a new yacht again and go through the process of figuring out how to optimize boat speed and get back into competition mode,” said Fauth, adding humorously that his team’s nickname among competitors is “Experimente” due to the in-depth testing and analyzing they perform on the boat each season. “When you’re sailing at this level, even the smallest details can be game changers. As we move forward with this new build, no stone can be left unturned.”

For New England Boatworks, this will be the third  Bella Mente  that it has built for Fauth. Located in Portsmouth, R.I, the premier boatyard is responsible for some of the world’s most high-performance yachts. The new  Bella Mente  build began this past December, and the boatyard team, as well as a team of Bella Mente Racing boatbuilders, are working in overdrive to ensure the yacht launches this summer.

“The Maxi 72 represents the epitome of the sport of sailing, so it is very exciting to be leading the charge on a project of this caliber,” said New England Boatworks Partner Tom Rich, adding that the class has gained more and more traction over the years, resulting in the International Maxi Association tightening up the rules in 2017. The class now strictly abides by the owner/driver rule, and all the yachts must fit the 72-foot length requirement. There is also a rating cap that narrows the performance differences between each yacht.

“Although there are very specific guidelines that we as builders and the designers must abide by, there is also quite a bit of room for innovation. Even the most subtle change can make a big difference.”

In addition to working together, Rich and Fauth have been friends for decades. “We have mutual respect for one another, and I certainly enjoy his company. He’s a very good sailor with a great gut instinct, and he’s very interested in getting knowledge out of people. He enjoys all the small and steady steps taken to improve the boat and its performance. “

When it comes to the team, the majority of Bella Mente Racing’s crew will stay the same as the previous year. Fauth will be joined in the afterguard by Volvo Ocean Race champion Mike Sanderson, two-time Olympian Adrian Stead and Tactician Terry Hutchinson, a two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.

“It’s great to be on our way to getting the boat launched and racing to see what we can learn, but it will be a development process for sure,” said Hutchinson, adding that there are six Maxi 72s currently on the competitive race circuit, two of which are newer builds and didn’t hit their stride on the racecourse until either their third or fourth season. “Newer design and newer construction doesn’t guarantee a better result, but it does buy us time to begin the process of developing and optimizing the boat for the future. Our first challenge this year will be to quantify where we left off in 2017 with sail development, and our second challenge is to understand the dynamic of the rig and how the sail program interacts with it. From there, we need to learn the new boat’s mode versus the rest of the Maxi 72 fleet, which is the most critical component. With that said, we certainly have an exciting year on the horizon.”
