Riva 68 Diable Review

Riva 68 Diable

This latest creation is not Riva’s first Diable, the French word for “devil.” There was one predecessor: the Riva 50 Diable. A forerunner of the 51 Turborosso, the old Diable sports cruiser was in production from 1984 to 1989. Reflecting the styles of the times, it had a chunky, angular design with a squared-off transom and an arch mast. Riva built 31 hulls. One of them was the first Riva that I ever went aboard.

That was a different experience than going aboard today’s Riva 68 Diable, which is the biggest model to be built at Riva’s Sarnico headquarters on Italy’s Lake Iseo. Hull No. 1 has a modern, shark-gray metallic hull and cockpit moldings, a bright black-metallic superstructure, and a jaunty Riva-blue boot top. It’s a popular Riva scheme, although plenty of other color combinations are possible.

The hardtop is mostly carbon fiber, has a sunroof, and covers the forward half of the cockpit. For air circulation, there are air gaps between the top of the wraparound windshield and the roof section. There’s also a double-height windshield and a reverse-rake corner forward, where the windshield meets the deck. All these features also help to elongate the 68 Diable’s profile.

A pantograph-framed canvas awning protects most of the aft deck when desired. The whole space forms one big, open main-deck lounge, effectively seamless from the swim platform through to the helm console. As with the smaller Dolceriva and Rivale hardtops, the 68 Diable incorporates air-conditioning ducts, but there’s still plenty of headroom beneath—at least 6 feet, 6 inches. The cockpit furniture that isn’t optional is symmetrical on each side of a central corridor. Two L-shaped sofas extend along each side, with a dining table to port (this table could be specified to starboard instead, or on both sides). On Hull No. 1, this table is mahogany and inlaid with the Riva logo. It’s on a pedestal than can rise or drop at the flick of a switch, creating a day bed. A pop-up TV is abaft the observer bench to starboard.

Riva 68 Diable

The foredeck has several sofas and sun-lounging space. There’s another sofa at the transom, as well as a sun pad atop the tender garage, which accommodates a Williams Sportjet 345 and at least one Seabob. The hydraulic swim platform drops down on a slope and reveals more steps for water access. Several other current Rivas provide the same neat solution.

Standard in the engine room are twin 1,550 hp MAN V-12 diesels, which Riva says will deliver a top speed around 37 knots and a 33-knot fast cruise. The yacht I got aboard had the bigger 1,650 hp MAN V-12 motors, which topped out comfortably at just over 38 knots with a heavy load during my time aboard in September. Riva quotes a 40-knot maximum with these engines at one-third load.

At a fast cruise of around 34 knots, and with those diesels humming contentedly at around 2,000 rpm, fuel burn was 132 gallons per hour, which equates to a cruising time of 7.6 hours and a range of almost 260 nautical miles. Drop the engines down 400 rpm and level out at 26 knots, and that range spins out by another 50 nautical miles, adding two hours to the total run time.

Riva 68 Diable

The driving position is great. The helm console has a Simrad Command platform. Owners can choose a single 16-inch multifunction display or an optional second screen, as was aboard this 68 Diable. All the engine data is well-presented on a wide-screen display from Boening.

Handling is as responsive and precise as it can be aboard a machine that, fully ladened, weighs in at almost 100,000 pounds. This hull had the optional Seakeeper NG9 gyrostabilizer in standby mode during speed runs but left the Humphree dynamic trim system active. Happily, the 68 Diable also came with the optional Xenta joystick controls, which, in addition to easing dockside maneuvering, make for easy twist-of-the-wrist course adjustments when cruising. The optional dynamic-positioning system also makes station-keeping a cinch alongside a fuel dock or while waiting for a bridge to open.

Riva decor is always a treat. There are varnished mahogany highlights, polished stainless steel, stitched leatherwork and more: The looped handles on the stateroom doors have been used aboard Riva cruisers for something like 50 years. Even the inside of Riva’s closets are high-gloss veneers.

The standard veneers throughout the yacht are reconstructed—or “rigatoni”—wenge, which look fabulous, but the upgraded rosewood has a more luxurious striped grain and seemingly even more depth to the varnish. If you prefer a lighter and brighter vibe, there’s also a gray-and-white matte oak alternative.

Riva 68 Diable

Belowdecks are an amidships galley to port with a fridge/freezer, cooktop and dishwasher, as well as a lounge with a dinette to starboard. There are three staterooms with hullside-window views. The owner’s stateroom is down a few steps and aft with a forward-facing double berth and an en suite head to port, abaft a sliding door with separate stalls for the toilet and shower. The VIP stateroom is in the bow with an en suite head. A day head to starboard serves the twin-berth guest stateroom. There is also crew space for one, with a separate shower stall, accessed beneath the cockpit sofa.

Riva’s 68 Diable is a feisty addition to the builder’s Open portfolio, incorporating the best of what the brand is known for while adding something new too.

Sound Investment

Riva has striven over the years to reduce sound and vibration levels on all its yachts. At around 30 knots, the 68 Diable’s decibels just about everywhere rarely get above the mid-80 range, about the same level of noise as a lawn mower. At a 10-knot chug, I measured 74 decibels at the helm and 70 to 72 decibels in the master stateroom. That’s the equivalent of a hair dryer or dishwasher.

Bigger Models

While the smaller Rivas are built well inland on Lake Iseo in Northern Italy, the bigger Rivas—from the 76 Perseo Super up to the 110 Dolcevita—are fitted out at Riva’s facility on the west coast in La Spezia. The all-new composite trideck Riva 130, the first of the models expected to launch in 2022, and all the biggest metal Rivas are built at Riva Superyachts in Ancona.

Stirred, Not Shaken

The 68 Diable has custom racking and drawer inserts for cutlery, chinaware, glassware, wine bottles and galley utensils. All stow beautifully. My favorite example aboard the 68 Diable is in the cockpit. Open a cupboard door, and there are two Perspex pullout shelves; the lower one houses a half-dozen cocktail glasses, and the upper has a polished, stainless-steel Alessi cocktail shaker and accessories.

On board the 21m Riva 68 Diable yacht with a "design from the future"

Related articles.

Seeing Riva’s Ribelle and the 68 Diable side by side, it is as if one of two similar-looking sisters has just gone out and got a new top hat – and a smart one at that. The hat is of course the bright black built-in carbon fibre and composite hard top. Having evolved from the Dolceriva and Rivale 56, this feature fully embodies her intentions to be a yacht blended with elegance, sportiness and liveability. “She looks like a design from the future,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi.

Fringed by linear side windows and merging infinitely with the windshield made with spherical crystals, the hard top creates a sheltered space that is inviting and, after boarding from the aft, draws guests immediately in. Here, the main attraction in terms of furniture is the two facing L-shaped sofas – one with life rafts stored underneath – that can also act as a dining area with a 49-inch television and an icebox on hand. The nearby smart-looking helm station is equipped with both pilot and co-pilot seats, two 16-inch touchscreen monitors to oversee the engine panel and Dynamic Positioning System functionality and a manoeuvring joystick.

While the helm station features darker carbon panels, trims of shiny polished steel and a classically fashioned white leather steering wheel bearing the Riva emblem, the neutral, calming furnishings and ice white seating designed for the first unit of the Riva 68 Diable line (as seen on show at the Cannes Yachting Festival) is what brings this welcoming look together. The style continues below deck, where a central space containing a galley and small dinette leads off into a layout that utilises the 5.29-metre beam with a small under stair laundry space and three separate cabins, each with its own bathroom. The materials used for the interiors are in perfect Riva style, with gloss-effect chocolate-coloured wengé wood on the first unit, paired with mirrored and satin-finish surfaces, both matt and gloss-effect steel and lacquer, and leather in shades of blue, white, and light and dark grey.

However, this is all offset with the yacht’s contrasting cool, almost metallic, ‘Shark Grey’ exterior paint job that, as suggested by the name, feels more chaos than calm. And rightly so, because this is a yacht intended for those trendsetters “with a fashion-driven spirit” and who bodes well with the definition of diable (meaning devil in French). The overall look and swagger are further elevated by the trademark Riva touches of mahogany and polished stainless steel that can be seen on the aft wings, garage door, handrails and the low table in the cockpit.

The cockpit, predominantly formed by two comfortable cushioned sunpads, looks down onto the stern swim platform. Well integrated into the hull sides, the platform comes with steps that can be conveniently submerged into the water for guests to use before or after a refreshing swim in the sea and to get back on board after a drive on the yacht’s SeaBob which is stored together in the garage along with the Williams SportJet 345 tender.

Just like her sister, the layout of the Riva 68 Diable’s engine room can house the engine set of choice. For the full works, the MAN V12 V-drive engines rated at 1,650 mhp each will push the sleek Diable to a top speed of 40 knots or a cruising speed of 34 knots. Alternatively, the 1,550 mhp MAN V12 option will get as far as a just-as-good 37 knots at full throttle. At these speeds, the engines fan the water in their wake. All the while, the whole platform is kept steady and balanced thanks to the precise electro-hydraulic steer-by-wire system. This is the in-built technology that gives the 68 Diable her thrilling ability to whip around and turn tightly in any sea condition, even at high speeds. Docking is also made easier due to the combined action of the main propellers and the proportional bow thruster.

The Riva 68 Diable is comfortable underway, particularly around her 30+ knot cruising speeds. For those who enjoy some peace and quiet away from the humdrum of speedy machines, the levels of noise within the lower deck stay around 80 decibels when the yacht is running at full speed.

To date, eight Riva 68 Diable superyachts have been sold to their prospective owners. As the brainchild of Mauro Micheli, co-founder of Officina Italiana Design, together with the Product Strategy Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the Group Engineering Department, the upcoming units of the 68 Diable will come in a variety of the available Riva range colours, all of which will surely go well with that remarkable top hat.

This famous Italian marque builds very different boats to the ones that made its name but does this £3 million 70ft Riva 68 Diable still have the same old magic?

Few designers must feel a heavier weight of expectation as they put pen to paper than those in the team at Officina Italiana Design who have been drawing Rivas for the last 27 years. Imagine having that history, that reputation for innate beauty and that iconic name weighing down heavily on the tip of your pencil.

That’s one way of looking at it, the other is that Riva has come such a long way since those seductively varnished mahogany craft granted the brand its legendary status.

Yes, the name sets a certain standard but the design team also has carte blanche to create something special and not to worry (too much) about the cost. Practicality be damned, just make it beautiful.

In this regard it is mission accomplished as far as the Riva 68 Diable (French for “devil”) is concerned; it is absolutely gorgeous (and just shy of £3 million in base spec). Pretty enough to make you stop in your tracks and drink it in from elegant stem to seductively sloping stern.

Perfect proportions.

Forget your vertical bows and slab-sided topsides, this is a boat that looks right because it is designed to look good above anything else, and the interior can just fit into the space that’s left, rather than the other way around.

So achingly sweet are its proportions that it’s hard to believe that its LOA is just a couple of feet short of 70ft and it weighs in at nearly 40 tonnes.

You get drunk on the details, big and small. The carbon fibre roof is a standout piece of design, its forward mullions diving inboard of the fiercely raked windscreen appearing to hover over the deeply sunken cockpit seating.

It’s lovely the way the one-piece and gently curved windscreen peels into the hardtop, which then splits into a pair of slender struts that plunge down to deck level. It’s all just gorgeous and no expense has been spared to ensure that there isn’t a line out of place.

The Riva 66 Ribelle is a sportsbridge based on the same hull as the Riva 68 Diable

Our test boat was finished in ‘shark grey’ but within this avantgarde colour scheme there are nods to the boat’s predecessors, most notably the varnished mahogany spines that emerge from the boat’s hindquarters, as if an original Aquarama is hiding beneath the skin.

Get closer and the boat’s size becomes more apparent; the profile may be sleek but there is a generous freeboard and deep side decks with tall toe rails and subtly integrated guard rails from bow to stern.

You feel as though you are sitting in the foredeck seating rather than perching precariously on top of it and the combination of sun pad and sofa creates welcome outdoor living space on a 70-footer that doesn’t boast a flybridge (though there is an equally arresting sportsbridge version based on the same blueprint).

No expense has been spared to ensure there isn’t a line out of place

The main deck arrangement is relatively simple in its geometry but this only serves to highlight the focus on materials and fit and finish. The cockpit is a festival of polished stainless steel and mahogany so flawlessly glossy it still looks wet.

Two enormous L-shaped sofas dominate amidships with the option between them to have either a table to port and a moveable squab to use as a seat or coffee table or to have an identical table on the starboard side.

The standard arrangement feels like the better use of space and means guests don’t have to squeeze behind a table if they just want to sit down and relax.

riva-68-diable-review-MBY275.test_Riva68.008

Set into a unit aft of the navigator seat there is a 49in water-resistant, anti-glare TV that rises up at the press of a switch, nice if you want to watch a film on a balmy evening and don’t want to be on the lower deck.

Raise the roof

It’s this area that is best protected by the hard top, though there is a glass sunroof overhead that draws natural light into the space. It doesn’t slide but instead tilts open on a two-way pivot to allow the breeze to funnel in fore or aft.

In truth the main deck is so open it matters not how much ventilation the sunroof can provide. It’s a lovely mechanism, though.

riva-68-diable-review-MBY275.test_Riva68.015

Aft, there is a pair of wet bars with the usual sink/grill/fridge or ice maker combination and an aft bench connected to the four-person sun pad, which lifts to reveal a tender garage large enough for a Williams SportJet 345 and a couple of Seabobs. At the touch of a button a sunshade emerges from the hard top to offer some shelter over the aft sun pad.

The hydraulic bathing platform is something to behold. In what is now a familiar Ferretti Group trait, the platform slides down the angled transom revealing steps as it goes that are clad in thick teak and built into the hull, creating two well-protected stairways that lead into the water. Even this functional device carries out its duties with big dollops of panache.

Engine options have been kept quite simple on the Riva 68 Diable. There are just two and they both use twin 24-litre MAN V12 diesel blocks with either 1,550hp or 1,650hp. I don’t envisage many leaving Lake Iseo with the smaller ones.

riva-68-diable-review-MBY275.test_Riva68.020

“The steering feels fantastic, keeping it straight when cruising but coming alive if you throw it around”

I try not to arrive for a test with expectations lodged in my mind but I must admit that in driving my first Riva in 14 years of testing boats for MBY there was part of me that wanted the experience to live up to the hype.

It shares many major components with other boats in the sector from engines to gearboxes, throttles to electronics, how different could it possibly feel? It didn’t disappoint. Riva goes to great lengths to make sure that the parts of the boat you see and use regularly look and feel special, and the steering wheel is a particularly good example.

The design is simple but it looks fabulous and the soft leather and polished stainless steel are wonderfully tactile and weighty, setting the tone for the muscular performance that is to come.

riva-68-diable-review-MBY275.test_Riva68.022

The helm seats (outrageously comfortable and adorned with faux straps and buckles, which makes them look oddly like posh luggage) are a little too far away from the dashboard so it feels natural to stand before the carbon fibre-clad helm.

The dash rises in tiers with throttles, thruster (bow and stern) sticks and Humphree trim controls closest to the wheel, twin Simrad MFDs at the top and a horizontal strip of beautifully rendered digital engine dials by Boning.

This screen isn’t interactive, that’s what the Simrads are for, but it’s a lovely way to ensure that engine information is always on display.

Fly-by-wire steering

In a world moving towards pod drives and away from all-out performance the Riva 68 Diable is a two-fingered salute in a silk glove. Power is enormous so even a gentle shove of the ZF throttles provokes a barrel-chested rumble as 3,300 horses draw the boat on to the plane and up to a laughably comfortable top speed of 38.7 knots.

It’s safe to say that 40 knots wouldn’t be out of reach in the right conditions and at a 30-knot cruise the Riva 68 Diable isn’t even trying. The steering is Ferretti Group’s hydraulic fly-by-wire system, which returns the wheel to centre in the same way a car’s steering does and adjusts the lock limit depending on boat speed.

It takes some getting used to but it feels fantastic at speed, keeping the boat comfortably on the straight and narrow when cruising but coming alive if you choose to throw it around a bit.

riva yacht 68

And the whole time you are acutely aware that you are driving something that looks so special (if you aren’t, the swivelling heads and Meerkat-like dance of smartphones will remind you).

You can’t possibly risk spooning something this glamorous into the quayside and shattering the illusion of cool but thankfully there are a slew of driver aids to make berthing easier.

Hydraulic bow and stern thrusters are a start but the Xenta joystick offers the precision of IPS by combining said thrusters and the engines. It even has a similar function that holds the boat in place using GPS if you’re busy elsewhere.

saloon

The sleek lower saloon drips with cool

Below decks the layout isn’t what you’d describe as revolutionary but the finish is exquisite. Yet more sumptuous woodwork and leather in a lower saloon that is crisp and clean with a simple L-shaped seating area opposite a well-designed galley that is so neatly integrated it’s almost invisible.

The VIP double is forward of the saloon with its own ensuite and there is a guest twin aft that has use of the day heads on the opposite side of the boat. The owner’s cabin is a suitably plush full-beam affair that has its ensuite arranged down the port side with a centrally positioned sink that is flanked by separate shower and toilet cubicles.

It’s an interior that isn’t garish or exuberant but is effortless in its execution and a wonderful place to be.

Effortless. There’s a word to describe this Riva. Its presence, its style, its performance, its handling, its ability to outshine yachts of many times its size and cost – it does it all with ease. It’s true that this famous yard’s current range is a long way from its roots these days but the intoxicating Riva essence ripples through them all and it is especially present in this wonderful, expensive, madly beautiful sportscruiser.

July 26 2021

The launch of the eagerly awaited Riva 68' Diable is innovation unleashed.

The new flagship of the storied Sarnico shipyard entered the water on Lake Iseo      Sarnico, July 26 - Sporty, elegant and instantly exhilarating, Riva 68’ Diable touched the water for the first time on Lake Iseo. An irresistible design, magnetic beauty and amazing performance are the distinctive features of this incredibly alluring new masterpiece, forged in the storied Sarnico shipyard and scheduled to make its debut in September at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2021.   With Riva 68’ Diable, a new star is born in the under 70-foot open yacht market, where Riva is the undisputed leader because of its ability to innovate with elite boats that anticipate trends and satisfy the tastes of highly evolved owners.  The brainchild of Mauro Micheli, founder with Sergio Beretta of Officina Italiana Design, working in partnership with the Product Strategy Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari and the Group Engineering Department, this incredible yacht revolutionises the open concept, incorporating exciting technological and functional design innovations that elevate liveability and comfort on board to their maximum level. All embellished by the traditional style features and premium detailing that have been distinctive features of Riva’s iconic status from the outset.   “Riva 68’ Diable is the irresistible temptation to which every Riva owner and fan can’t wait to succumb. It looks like a design from the future, but is also a fantastic journey through Riva’s hallmark style and sophisticated detailing,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi. “An unrivalled mix of innovation and masterful hand craftsmanship, it offers outstanding performance and unparalleled comfort. I understand the enthusiasm generated around this incredible boat and it gives me immense pleasure.”    One of the stand-out new features and strengths of this yacht is the innovative built-in hard top, with a clean, linear design that hides the technical and technological elements from view. This ingenious and versatile solution protects and shelters the central areas of the yacht, including the dining area and the helm station on the main deck. The result is total coverage and maximum comfort, without sacrificing the enjoyment and sportiness of an open yacht with a top speed of 40 knots. Another interesting functional design feature is the sunroof that can be opened in two directions (forwards and reverse) for maximum liveability and comfort on the move. The layout of the lower deck features three cabins for six guests, arranged around an open space containing a galley and a dinette for versatility and convenience. The master cabin is amidships, with the twin cabin with single beds to port and the VIP forward.    To discover all the secrets and outstanding design solutions that will seduce owners around the world, Riva 68’ Diable will make its official debut in a world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, in September 2021, after which it will move on to the Genoa Boat Show.

3 yachts linked to P9.68-B Batangas drug bust seized

riva yacht 68

The Bureau of Customs on Tuesday said it seized three private yachts, one of which was allegedly used to transport 1.4 tons of illegal drugs to Nasugbu, Batangas. According to a statement, the BOC, Philippine National Police (PNP) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) conducted a parallel investigation that led to the discovery of three undocumented yachts docked in Nasugbu, all under the ownership of one individual. The BOC said at least one of the yachts was used to transport the 1.4 tons of shabu to Nasugbu from an undisclosed source. The ongoing probe established a connection of the vessels to the P9.68 billion worth of shabu that was intercepted at a police checkpoint in Alitagtag, Batangas on April 15 . The BOC was able to implement a Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) on Thursday for violation of the “Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.” The 3 yachts will be turned over to the Port of Manila (POM) Auction and Cargo Disposal Division. "Our team is working tirelessly to collaborate closely with international partners, law enforcement agencies, and other government bodies to ensure coordinated and effective responses. Their efforts have already yielded significant results, and we are confident that with continued vigilance, we will disrupt and dismantle these criminal operations,” said BOC Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/RF, GMA Integrated News
