About Charleston

Established in 1670, Charleston is packed with over 350 years of history. Some of this history, such as Fort Sumter, can only be accessed via Charleston's waterways. The city has a subtropical climate, ensuring warm weather almost year-round. The sunny summers and mild winters are perfect for boating, no matter the season. A plethora of wildlife calls our coasts home. It is not uncommon to have dolphins escort our charters throughout Charleston's waters.

About our master captains

Steve Woodard  has been around boats all of his life, owning his first sail boat at the tender age of 11. In 2008, he founded  Charleston Charter and Yacht, a family business. He proudly brought luxurious, customized, private charters to the Lowcountry for the first time. Steve has owned 13 boats throughout the years and has been a Master Captain 100 tons for 16 years. His skill, expertise, and experience in maneuvering a variety of vessels ensures you are in extremely capable and caring hands.

Paul Zobel was born in Charleston, spending much of his formative years on the waters around the area. He has had a captains license for over forty years, owning and piloting boats from Miami to NY for many of them. He was Captain of the Port for Dewees Island for ten years, piloting their ferry boats. Capt. Charleston Charter and Yacht is incredibly proud to have Cpt. Paul continuing work on the water with us.

Pete DeBoer is a native of Seattle, Washington and grew up in a boating family. Because he is a retired U.S. Coast Guard officer, his experience in operating boats and ships covers the spectrum from 14 to 378 feet. He has served and worked in the Pacific, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Bering Sea, and the Atlantic - from Trinidad to Martha’s Vineyard. Multitalented, Pete is a singer-songwriter that enjoys playing the guitar. His novel, Heave To , loosely parallels his 3 years of drug enforcement operations on a Charleston based cutter in the early 80’s. When Pete is your captain, it's guaranteed you will probably enjoy a sea story or two.

SERENA Charleston Sailing Vessel

The charleston sailing vessel serena is a 50′ classic sloop designed by bill tripp, and is one of only 12 in the world.

SERENA  offers the best Charleston sailing providing plenty of above deck and below deck space for milling about. Her lifelines encircle the entire length of the vessel and are covered with safety netting.

Also, there is a large cushioned cockpit for seating, a cushioned bench on the fore deck, settee in the salon, and lots of deck cushions. Below decks you will find one queen cabin, one double v-berth cabin, salon, full galley, and head (bathroom).   SERENA  was refit at the Palmer Johnson yard with special attention to her rigging, engine and flag blue Awlgrip hull.

“Out of control” container ship prompts temporary closure of Ravenel Bridge; remains anchored outside Charleston Harbor

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – An investigation is underway after a large container ship lost the ability to control its engines in Charleston Harbor, prompting a temporary closure of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Command Center in Charleston received a report from the Charleston Harbor Pilot Dispatch around 12:17 p.m. of an out-of-control vessel in the Cooper River.

Deputy Commander Randy Preston said the vessel was identified as the MSC Michigan 7, a 997-foot, 74,000-ton container ship outbound from the North Charleston container terminal headed to Savannah.

“The pilot on board indicated the vessel lost ability to control the engines and they were stuck nearly full-ahead with the vessel making between 14 to 17 knots,” said Preston. Throttles were near-full forward and could not be moved out of that position.

Coast Guard boats and other agency partner assets were alerted and cleared vessel traffic from the ship channel. Charleston and Mount Pleasant police departments closed the Ravenel Bridge and began evacuating pedestrians before the ship passed underneath.

Lisa Riente was riding her bike over the Ravenel Bridge when officers told her to leave her bike behind and get into the back of their patrol car.

“I threw my bike down, grabbed my phone, and jumped in the back of the police car with a couple of other pedestrians and it was kind of scary. We were going across the bridge trying to get other pedestrians and warn them that there was an out-of-control boat headed towards the bridge,” she recalled.

Coast Guard officials said Fort Moultrie beach was also evacuated in case the ship had to ground intentionally.

There were some reports of minor damage along the vessel’s route due to wake as it passed. Two recreational boaters were pushed onto rocks near the tip of Daniel Island, which resulted in them suffering non-life-threatening injuries.  

Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker said the Ravenel Bridge did not suffer any damage.

Personnel on the container ship got control of its engines and slowed it down. The vessel cleared the harbor without major incident and has been ordered to anchor until further notice.

A Coast Guard team of vessel examiners and investigators are responding to the ship.

“Anytime a vessel can’t control its propulsion it’s concerning. But thanks to our partners, our maritime partners, our local law enforcement partners, it turned out well and that’s due to our intense partnership and coordination,” said Deputy Commander Randy Preston.

The incident remains under investigation.

Former Charleston Co. teacher charged with cruelty to children

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A former Charleston County School District employee has been arrested in connection to the assault of a middle school student.

Elijah Battle, 59, was charged with cruelty to children.

Battle is accused of assaulting a juvenile victim to the point of leaving lasting marks on his nose and abdomen.

According to a police report, these charges stem from a May 17 incident in which, around 11:30 a.m., a student at Morningside Middle School had been tossing up his pencil case in the lunchroom, possibly causing it to hit Battle.

Police say that, once the two were just outside of the lunchroom in a nearby hallway, Battle grabbed a hold of the child by his torso. Officers were shown footage from the school’s cameras which show the incident, and further show the child did not struggle or attempt to escape from Battle’s hold.

Responding officers could still see the marks on the child, including redness on his nose and his ribcage, four hours after the accident, and the child complained of pain still emanating from his nose.

Battle was arrested Thursday and was released on bond Friday.

The Charleston County School District provided the following statement regarding the arrest:

“We understand Mr. Battle’s arrest is related to an incident at Morningside Middle School. Once we were made aware of the matter, we cooperated with law enforcement and followed our protocols. He is no longer employed by the district.”
