RC Sailboat: T37 RACING UPGRADE Racing Sloop

For accessories for the T37 Racing Sloop, including stands, varnish, and racing accessories, visit the  T37 RC Sailboat Accessories page .

The standard T37 RC Sailboat races beautifully and can be very competitive, but the Racing Upgrade for the T37 Racing Sloop improves sailing performance and power, and is particularly designed for sailors considering racing. The T37 Racing Upgrade Racing Sloop features a variety of innovations to allow for precise sail adjustments, faster sail trim, and improved speed and performance. The mast and booms of this RC Sailboat are made of strong, light-weight carbon fiber. The double-throw sheeting system, along with the more powerful ultra-torque sail servo, makes sail adjustment even faster and easier, and the boom-vang helps to maintain a perfect sail shape. Whether you are racing in a fleet of 20 boats or a fleet of one, the speed, agility, and beauty of the T37 Racing Upgrade RC Sailboat will provide hours of sailing fun!

The T37 Racing Upgrade Kit comes with everything you will need to build the boat, including the marine epoxy and all of the RC gear (except for batteries) for sailing the boat. In fact, all you need is paint or varnish and AA batteries!  For assembly, we recommend ages 15 and up, or 12 and up with an adult. For sailing and racing, we suggest ages 8 through adult.

The T37 Racing Upgrade kit is quick to build (around 20 hours building time) and no previous building experience is required. This RC Sailboat kit includes:

  • Hull and deck pieces pre-cut to an accuracy of 1/1000 of an inch from the highest grade of marine Okume plywood
  • High-quality brass and stainless steel hardware
  • Spectra rigging lines
  • Carbon fiber mast and booms
  • ¾ oz. Nylon Spinnaker cloth pre-sewn sails
  • Marine-grade epoxy, along with epoxy brushes and syringes
  • Full RC gear, including the transmitter, receiver, battery box, and rudder and sail servos
  • Keel ballast casting
  • Excellent, detailed building instructions to guide you through the entire building process

Sails for this RC sailboat can be made in any of the colors shown on the color swatch in the last picture. The standard main sail colors are white and fluorescent yellow, and the standard jib sail colors are white, dark blue, red, and fluorescent orange. Other colors listed are an additional $6.50 per sail. If you would like to choose a non-standard color, select "Other" from the drop-down menu and leave a comment in the "Add a note to your order" box during checkout.

This wooden sailboat kit includes an HS645 Ultra-Torque servo to increase the torque compared to the standard version of the kit. However, the HS645 is an analog servo and it can be upgraded further to a digital servo, either the D645MW or HS7955TG.

The digital ultra torque servos are the same outside dimensions as the standard analog servos, but the digital servos carry a big punch. In conditions where it might be difficult to pull the sails in with the analog 645 ultra torque servo and might even require a momentary partial luff, the D645MW servo yanks the sails right in tight. The HS645MG analog servo is rated at 157.8 oz. inches of torque at 6 volts, the D645MW digital servo is rated at 168 oz. inches of torque at 6 volts, and the HS7955TG digital servo is rated at a huge 333 oz. inches of torque! This 7955 top of the line servo has twice as much power as you will ever need and it is definitely over the top. There isn't even a flicker of hesitation no matter what the wind is doing at the moment. The standard sail arms aren't necessarily strong enough for all of this extra torque with the 7955 servo, so an upgraded stainless steel and aluminum sail arm (included with the servo) must be installed as well.

One important aspect of these digital servos is that they can be programmed for up to 120 degrees of swing instead of the standard 90 degrees of arc. Any digital servo you get from Tippecanoe Boats will be already programmed for the maximum swing. Along with the double throw sheeting system included in this kit, the extra swing on the servo gets your sails out almost perpendicular to the center line and pulls the main sail in to a centered position and the jib in to create a perfect slot.

Please call 1-360-966-7245 or email [email protected] to inquire about the availability and pricing of finished RC boats. The finished boat comes fully completed and ready to sail.

This is the first model boat that I built, it was from a kit from Tippecanoe model boats, it was about six years ago and I had fun building it and was surprised to find that I had even more fun sailing it, It fits, fully rigged into the back of my car so there is no hassle trying to rig outside in the wind and by the waters edge, just turn on the batteries for the servos in the hull and on the transmitter and you are ready to go. Allthough I have made quite a few other craft it still remains a favourite I have sailed Zena hundreds of times and still get a smile on my face every time when she heads out. It’s such a simple form for the hull just four pieces of shaped thin ply held together with epoxy filets, there is a carbon fibre mast and booms and ripstop nylon sails, For anyone who wants to build a simple but surprisingly sophisticated small yacht to go sailing I can’t recommend the T37 highly enough. Rose City Model Sailing Club

About the Rose City Model Sailing Club

t37 model yacht

HELLO PACIFIC NORTHWEST MODEL SAILORS

Founded in 2010 and serving the Pacific Northwest and the Portland Metro area, the Rose City Model Sailing Club was chartered in 2011 by the American Model Yachting Association ( AMYA ) as Club 311. As a relatively new club, we’re anxious to increase our membership, and invite you to join us for build nights or weekend sails : we always have model boats available for trial sails!

Currently the RCMSC supports three fleets of AMYA sanctioned radio controlled model sailboats: the T37 : a classic 37″ wooden model racing yacht manufactured in the Seattle area with a large following in the Pacific Northwest; the 25.8″ DRAGON FORCE 65 , a new class of r/c model racing yachts introduced in 2013 in the U.S., UK and Europe, and the DragonFlight 95 Class, racing at a staggered start with the T37s. Occasionally, a few of our members still sail older class model sailboats supported by the RCMSC, the 12″ FOOTY –a developmental class of r/c model yachts with an international following and the German designed 21″ MICRO MAGIC racing model yacht (sailed worldwide). During a fun sail, many other classes will make an appearance as well, including Canterbury J ‘s, Soling 50’s, Marblehead’s, 10R’s, Fairwind’s, Racing Sparrow’s, RC Laser’s, Star 45’s, IOM’s & US1M’s – who know what you might see on the water.

Because our membership includes both working and retired folks,  our Sailing Schedule emphasizes weekend sails; but casual, impromptu  weekday sails are not unusual. We share our building and sailing skills on build nights and at the pond, and more experienced members are happy to mentor those new to r/c model yacht sailing. More information and additional club photos are available at Rose City Model Sailing Club (RCMSC) on Facebook.

SAILING WITH THE RCMSC

Our primary sailing venues, Westmoreland Casting Pond and Tualatin Commons Pond, are in the Portland area but we hope to add venues as we expand membership (see our VENUES Page for locations). Our SAILING SCHEDULE emphasizes weekend sails and has been planned to complement the racing schedule of our good neighbor the Oregon Model Yacht Club (OMYC).

Check our NEWS POSTS for announcements of RCMSC race results, non-scheduled sails or special events.

Henley-on-Todd Regatta in Alice Springs cancelled after unsuccessful grant application

Ships shoot water pistols in the Todd River

An iconic Alice Springs tradition billed as the "world's only dry river boating event" has been cancelled for this year.

It will be just the third time in more than 60 years the Henley-on-Todd Regatta, which draws tourists from around the country, has not gone ahead.

The regatta sees boat-like creations hauled by foot up the dry bed of the Todd River, and crews of pirates and Vikings engage in mock battles on the sandy riverbed.

People stand in a boat on a river bed

The volunteer organisers missed out on a vital grant because they did not submit documents accounting for how the grant money they received the previous year was spent by the deadline.

"We certainly didn't get everything right on our side," the event's commodore Lester Hamilton told the ABC.

"The acquittal of the grant from the previous year — everything was done, but it was just held up by the auditor and that hadn't been cleared by the time the grant submission went in."

Mr Lester said the "hardworking volunteers" had been doing their best but "one small step" was overlooked.

"We were able to put [our application] in at a later date but by that time a deadline had passed and we missed out on the entire funding," he said.

Mr Lester said the organisers had attempted to scramble for alternative funding once it became clear the usual NT government grant money would not be coming.

A man dressed as a viking holds the sign of the horns

"We went around and knocked on so many doors … and the doors didn't open," he said.

He said the event would be returning in 2025.

Push for longer-term contracts

Tourism industry representatives said the cancellation was "very sad".

Tourism Central Australia CEO Danial Rochford said the accounting obligations placed on volunteer organisations were necessary but difficult for groups to deal with.

Mr Rochford suggested longer-term funding deals could ease the administrative burden.

He cited the example of his own tourism peak body, which represents the industry and is in a five-year funding agreement with the NT government.

"An event like the Henley-on-Todd should not having be having to come back to request yearly money," Mr Rochford said.

"We should start to be getting into multi-year agreements with many of our iconic events."

"I hope out of this negative comes a positive."

Racers in the dry boat race

The event has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in NT government funding from the Community Benefit Fund.

Documents show it receives around $150,000 for each year, but has received multi-year contracts previously.

In the 2018/19 financial year it received $450,000 for a three-year deal.

Event 'transitioning' to business model

NT major events minister Brent Potter said his government "strongly supports" the regatta and had invested $50,000 this year in the "iconic" event.

It had given that sum in the meantime "while a three-year plan to continue delivering the event by Rotary Alice Springs is being finalised", Mr Potter said in a statement.

"On the 26th of June, the new Henley on Todd committee advised [NT Major Events] they have decided to postpone the 2024 event for a raft of reasons including a lack of volunteers and a desire to re-focus and deliver a free event in 2025."

A historic photograph shows makeshift boats being carried across a sandy riverbed.

The event organiser Mr Lester did cite other issues beyond the grant money, including an inability to recruit an event manager.

But he said a lack of volunteers had not been an issue.

The organisers had been "transitioning" to a professional business to be less reliant on volunteers as a previous generation of core volunteers moved into retirement.

"We budgeted for that, we planned for that, and then at the last minute, the mat's been pulled out from underneath," Mr Lester said.

The first cancellation in the event's long history was in 1993 when the Todd River ran, making a dry riverbed race impossible.

The second was in 2020 due to restrictions put in place for the COVID-19 pandemic.
