We, we will dance like tiny boats with cotton sails upon the tops of the seas, That would pull us down to the depths and crush us flat if given half a chance. No need to look back to pictures of lost, when all was rust. We, we will skim across the surface of the mud as if we're spinning pebbles Oh, in our yacht dance Oh, in our yacht dance
We, we will dance like tiny boats with cotton sails upon the tops of the seas, Made of people stained with scorn who never see the light of real love. No need to look back through diaries of lost now turned to dust. We, we will skate across the surface of the storm as if we're wheeling sea-birds. Oh, in our yacht dance Oh, in our yacht dance
And how they'll be jealous of both of us! In our yacht dance.

"Yacht Dance" by XTC explores the idea of escapism and finding joy in the face of adversity. The song uses the metaphor of dancing like tiny boats with cotton sails on top of the sea to signify navigating life's challenges.
In the verses, the lyrics highlight the fragility of existence and the potential for being pulled down into the depths and crushed, representing the struggles and hardships that can threaten to overpower us. However, the chorus brings a sense of optimism and freedom. The repetition of "Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho" in the chorus emphasizes a carefree and joyful spirit, as if the dancers are reveling in their escape from the weight of the world.
The mention of "people stained with scorn who never see the light of real love" suggests that the dancers are rejecting bitterness and negativity, choosing instead to focus on the surface joy and momentary freedom. The image of skating across the surface of a storm as if they were "wheeling sea-birds" signifies a sense of exhilaration and liberation despite any turmoil that may surround them.
The bridge adds a layer of social commentary, as the narrator suggests that others will be jealous and envious of the freedom and happiness expressed in the "yacht dance." This could imply that the song is also a reflection on the complacency and conformity of society, emphasizing the freedom and individuality found in dancing to one's own tune.
Overall, "Yacht Dance" can be interpreted as a call to find joy and freedom amidst life's challenges and to reject societal expectations that may impose limitations on personal happiness. It encourages listeners to embrace escapism as a means of finding solace and temporary respite from the complexities of life.

Andy: “With Settlement finished it was time to climb, very reluctantly, back on to the live treadmill. Thirteen years of valium addiction had been kicked and I was thinking clearer and deeper about life. I didn't want to be the packhorse on someone else's money making touring treadmill, I wanted to be a backroom boy record maker. No fame, just fine art. “I didn't know how to stop the bus, so I picked up my acoustic guitar (help, where is all the noise to hide behind?), and we did a whistle test. Dave thought he played awfully on this show, but I think his nerves held out. Any microscopic faltering is soon made good. This is the only time we ever played this song live. To be truthful, I don't think we could be arsed with miking up Spanish guitars, so that sealed its fate. “Oddly aquatic thematic footnote: just as we started, Colin kicked over a pint of water and spent the rest of the song paddling from puddle to puddle. Messing about on the river never sounded so real.”
