As the leading jobs board in the yachting industry...

Our mission has always been simple - " we help people find life changing dream jobs and save our clients time and money finding exceptional candidates ".

Steve & Daryl

Antibes, 2009. A British yachtie (Steve) was one year into his yachting career. Frustrated by the experience of finding work and available yacht jobs he set about founding Yotspot to change the way people found work, crew, and training within the yachting industry forever.

It was 2 years later when a chance encounter in La Ciotat led to Steve bumping into an old University friend Daryl who was working as Bosun on a 56m motor yacht. This serendipitous moment led to Daryl investing in Yotspot and moving ashore in the summer of 2013, setting up operations from his flat. Steve followed shortly thereafter, and both moved into their office HQ in Ocean Village, Southampton in 2014, leaving their sea legs behind them. Yotspot had landed.

The goal behind Yotspot has always been simple. Allow crew and yachting professionals to connect directly with employers, and for yachts to find great crew in a fast and efficient manner. Fast forward to today, and Yotspot is now the leading jobs board for the yachting industry. It helps to connect not only yacht crew looking for their next role, but also yachting professionals looking to further their career within the wider yachting community, both ashore and at sea.

Meet young professionals in European Standardization: Daniel Herbst, from Austria

With the European elections approaching, the twin green and digital transitions open new opportunities for the European industry and citizens, in a quickly changing global scenario. But does Europe have what it takes? How can we make sure that it has the skills and the workforce to remain competitive in the global economy? And what is the role of standardization?

On the occasion of the European Year of Skills , which continues in 2024, we are relaunching our special campaign: through a series of interviews with standardization professionals, experts and business leaders coming from a variety of backgrounds, we will explore the interaction between innovation, skills and standardization in some of the most relevant sectors for Europe’s long-term competitiveness.

For the third episode in this year’s series of interviews, we interviewed Daniel Herbst , a PhD student at the Institute of Electrical Power Systems at the Graz University of Technology (Austria) on the importance to invest on the link between standardization and research.

1. Please, present yourself.

I’m Daniel Herbst , I was born in 1988 in Vienna/Austria and studied electrical engineering, with a specialization in power engineering at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz).

Within the scope of my current work at the Institute of Electrical Power Systems at TU Graz, I deal with the topics of protection concepts at low voltage level, protection against electric shock (protective measures), standardization, safety of DC (direct current) electric vehicle charging stations, as well as measurement technology in electrical power systems.

Before working at the university, I was part of the team of a consulting company for electrical engineering in the areas of planning, tendering and construction supervision for more than five years.

2. Could you explain how you are involved in standardization and how you became interested in it?

My involvement in standardization started with the work on my master thesis related to the periodic verification of DC electric vehicle charging stations back in 2017 when my supervisor invited me to participate in several technical subcommittees and working groups.

Before that, during my studies at the Graz University of Technology, as part of the OVE students’ association (OVE Young Engineers) and working at a consulting company for electrical engineering, I was also involved in the use of standards.

Nowadays I am involved in the following (sub)committees and working groups:

  • Member of OVE TSK E01, E06, E07, E08 (national technical subcommittees related to HD 60364 series)
  • OVE AG Ladestationen DC (national working group to work on the national directive regarding the safe operation and the periodic verification of electric vehicle charging stations, convenor/chairman)
  • Member of several other national working groups related to low voltage electrical installations and electric vehicle charging stations / e-mobility
  • Guest member of OVE OEK AK (strategic committee on standardization at OVE)

International:

  • Member of IEC SG 11 Hot Topic Radar
  • Participation in IEC Young Professionals YP Workshop 2022 (San Francisco, USA)

3. You are the technical project coordinator of the ProSafE² research project. Can you briefly explain what it is? How does it relate to standardization?

To ensure the long-term safe operation of DC electric vehicle charging stations (DC-EVCS), they should be inspected periodically. ProSafE² therefore developed a practical concept for such periodic verifications in the form of 15 developed test cases.

Furthermore, a specially designed and constructed testing device demonstrator was developed for evaluating the applicability as well as the practical suitability of the test cases at DC charging stations installed in the field. The knowledge gained will also be implemented in the revision of the national Austrian OVE directive R 30 (safe operation and periodic verification of electric vehicle charging stations).

4. In your opinion, how can we better integrate research results into standardization?

Provide budget for universities and research institutes to finance their contribution in standardization!

5. You are also a project assistant at the Graz University of Technology and are involved in several technical committees of OVE, the Austrian Electrotechnical Association . How does your research activity complement your more hands-on experience in TCs?

I think it is a win-win situation for both, our institute as well as OVE’s committees. On the one hand, our institute’s research activities are – in some cases – the basis for discussions in national TCs (as one can see with the example of ProSafE²). On the other hand, the work in TCs sometimes leads to research questions which are elaborated on in bachelor or master theses.

6. What skills can young professionals learn from participating in standardization? And, in turn, what new, innovative skills can they bring to standardization work?

With participating in standardization, young professionals can get in touch with experts of the (inter)national electrical engineering community. Thereby, they can gain knowledge regarding the process of the development of a standard or get an idea of how different views of various experts can be focused to have a final consensus.

Furthermore, young professionals can be able to extend their personal network as well as contribute to emerging standards on behalf of their delegating institutions. From the perspective of the established experts, on the other hand, they can benefit from the young and fresh spirit of young professionals during the standard development process.

7. Do you expect to be working with standards in the future?

Due to the fact that I’m already working on my PhD thesis, and my university employment will probably end with the end of next year, time will tell how I will evolve and which company I will work for. Of course, I hope that standardization will continue to affect my professional life for a long time.

8. What advice would you like to give to your fellow young professionals to invite them into the world of standardization?

Since youth is often associated with words like novelty, awakening or innovation, and I often feel this spirit in my work with students, I can really agree with a quote from Austrian Standards (ASI): “With standardization, innovation finds its way to marketability.”

Therefore, I can encourage every young professional to participate in standardization to influence technical committees with their fresh ideas and their insight from up-to-date research.

This article is part of our special series dedicated to the European Year of Skills: through a series of articles and interviews with standardization professionals, experts and business leaders coming from a variety of backgrounds, we will explore the interaction between innovation, skills and standardization in some of the most relevant sectors for Europe’s long-term competitiveness. You can read the other articles related to the campaign  here

The more than 40,000 mile “Clipper Round the World Yacht Race” made an impressive arrival before docking at The Wharf in Southwest D.C. Monday morning.

Eleven clippers will remain there for a week before setting off on the final leg back across the Atlantic Ocean.

Hannah Brewis and a first mate are the only professional sailors on the yacht sponsored by Events DC, which was the first of 11 identical 70-foot racing yachts to dock at The Wharf on Monday morning.

“The rest of the crew is made up of total amateurs, with a wide difference, variety of sailing experience,” Brewis said, standing on the dock, shortly after the D.C. team was welcomed by several dozen early-morning supporters. “Some have never sailed, some have sailed a little bit.”

The trip began Sept. 3, 2023, in Portsmouth, U.K., where the race will finish.

“We’ve been to Spain. We’ve been to Uruguay, South Africa, Australia, Vietnam, China, Seattle, Panama — that’s our route so far, and now, finally into Washington, D.C.,” Brewis said.

The race leg from Panama ended near the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on Friday and Saturday. Monday morning’s travels to The Wharf was a short commute for the yachts, which also caused an approximately 15-minute delay for commuters in vehicles.

“We had to wait for it to be opened. The tricky part was we had to make sure the fleet was there at exactly 4:45 in the morning,” Brewis said. The Virginia Department of Transportation has warned commuters to expect a brief delay.

🚧Traffic Alert – #Alexandria : Woodrow Wilson Bridge (I-495/I-95) to open at approx 4:45 am today and tomorrow, Mon 6/17 & Tues 6/18, to allow passage of 11 yachts as part of Clipper 2023-24 Round the World Yacht Race. Expect delays. #DMVTraffic More: https://t.co/Tq21o3rWry pic.twitter.com/eYu15PxIom — VDOT Northern VA (@VaDOTNOVA) June 17, 2024

“We got there with perfect timing. We all transited through, no stress. It was really great, it was really cool,” Brewis said.

The yachts will remain docked at The Wharf all week. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, “you can actually come onboard, and see what it’s like to be on one of these big ocean racing yachts,” Brewis said.

On Tuesday, the clippers will set off on the race’s final leg across the Atlantic, heading toward Portsmouth, U.K. The send-off will be open to the public and include fireworks.

Meet the 2024 ECM artist assistance grants recipients

At the CU Boulder Entrepreneurship Center for Music (ECM), students can find the skills and tools they need for their music careers. Most recently, the ECM awarded $5,820 in artist assistance grants to support eight student-led professional development and community engagement projects including:

Josie Arnett

Josie Arnett “I’m really picky about which pieces I release on streaming platforms because I’m 20 and need to be able to write really bad music … and then release the things that I really love,” says Josie Arnett, an undergraduate composition student.

“Last fall, I got the opportunity to write a saxophone quartet piece for a group that travels all over the United States. I was really happy with the piece and really proud of it, so I reached out to a faculty member who set me up with the CU Boulder graduate saxophone quartet.”

Sanitas Saxophone Quartet

Working with the Sanitas Saxophone Quartet, College of Music Recording Engineer Kevin Harbison and a mixing artist, Arnett recorded the piece for projected release on streaming platforms this summer. The ECM grant helped pay the artists and distribution fee.

Arnett says she learned a lot about how to interact in a professional recording setting and enjoyed collaborating within the College of Music. “It’s been fun to work with people that have a lot of energy, positive attitudes and are just really excited about what they do,” she shares.

Alice Del Simone At the end of May, DMA student in voice performance and pedagogy Alice Del Simone was part of a workshop presentation at the Voice Foundation Symposium in Philadelphia titled “Legato Then and Now, Vibrato Edition: A Close-Up of What Happens Between the Pitches in the Classical Bel Canto Tradition.”

“The workshop offered a toolbox of exercises for how to teach the type of legato singing that was happening at the end of the 1800s, beginning of the 1900s when we started to have recordings available,” Del Simone says.

“It was my very first time presenting at a conference where there are often hurdles for a young academic to get an invitation to present. I’ve been lucky that I’ve been able to work with a group of people who are more prominent in the community than myself.”

During the symposium, Del Simone stayed at the conference hotel, partially funded by her ECM grant.

Zachary Howarth Zachary Howarth, a DMA student in jazz studies, will go on the road this summer to record music in studios in Reno and South Lake Tahoe. Howarth also hopes to perform this music live in venues across Colorado and Nevada.

The project will involve a contemporary jazz quartet—trumpet, piano, bass, drums—writing and recording the music. The ECM grant will help the project get off the ground by assisting with studio fees, production costs and travel expenses.

“The opportunity to write, record and play music with such high-level artists is invaluable to my collaborative research in compositional tendencies in contemporary jazz mediums and fully improvised music,” Howarth says.

SeaJun Kwon

SeaJun Kwon SeaJun Kwon, also a DMA student in jazz studies, likes writing compositions that push the boundaries of jazz music including “Avant Shorts”—10 etudes exploring micro tonalities and rhythmic concepts that aren’t commonly used in jazz compositions.

Kwon plans to compose these etudes and begin recording them over the summer, using a microphone setup funded by an ECM grant.

“I thought I’d write a bunch of super short compositions that focus on different ideas to develop myself and provide my community with these resources,” Kwon says.

By keeping them brief, he hopes to make the compositions more accessible and useful for his community.

“People are really busy, there are so many things that you have to do and also so many distractions,” Kwon says. “I think these short compositions put less pressure on people—they can work on them for 10 minutes and still learn from them.”

Er-Hsuan Li + orchestra

Er-Hsuan Li Er-Hsuan Li graduated from the College of Music in May with a DMA in piano performance. In April, he held a concert featuring the world premiere of John Clay Allen’s “ The Stone Harp ” concerto for piano and strings along with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

“It was a very fun event,” Li says. “Even though it was off-campus, it was really CU that made this possible because that’s how we connected.”

Many CU Boulder musicians participated including conductor and Associate Director of Orchestras Renee Gilliland, composition alumnus John Clay Allen, Anna Kallinikos—who’s majoring in trumpet performance and minoring in business—and the majority of the 18-member orchestra. The ECM grant assisted Li with compensating the performers and renting the venue.

“I had performed in front of an orchestra only once before when I was a high schooler,” Li recalls. “So it was really special for me that—after 13 years—I got to do this again professionally. And I would like to think that I am a better musician now compared to then!”

Ethan Stahl

Ethan Stahl When Ethan Stahl discovered Nkeiru Okoye’s music, he knew he’d found something special. “I loved her music so much that I began working on it for one of my degree recitals,” he says. “Eventually, it became evident that I had enough material to create a lecture recital.”

To prepare, Stahl—who’s pursuing a DMA in piano performance—interviewed Okoye about her music. “We talked on the phone for a few hours and in that conversation, she proposed the idea of writing a piece for me to add to one of the sets of piano pieces that I was studying.” The ECM grant helped fund Okoye’s contribution.

Okoye’s music is already part of the American Music Research Center’s Helen Walker-Hill Collection ; her upcoming composition will be added to the collection.

“Okoye is extremely novel in the world of piano composition,” Stahl adds. “I’ve never heard piano music that is similar stylistically to hers.”

Natalie Trejo Artist Diploma student Natalie Trejo competed in the finals for the Austin Flute Society’s Young Artist Competition in April—and the ECM grant helped her get there.

“I submitted the preliminary recordings back in January. From there, they selected three finalists to perform in the live final round in Austin, Texas,” Trejo says. “It went really well. I ended up getting third but I was very happy with how I played and I was not nervous at all.”

Trejo performed Chen Yi’s “Memory” for solo flute and Frank Martin’s “Ballade” for flute and piano.

“I love doing competitions because I get to learn new repertoire, meet new flutists, make connections and get to know the other finalists—it’s very important and humbling, but still encouraging,” Trejo says.

Jonathon Winter Another spring 2024 graduate, Jonathon Winter—who earned a DMA in violin performance—recorded four pieces to be compiled into an album titled “Origin: Music by Women of the Americas.” The pieces are “ko’u inoa” by Leilehua Lanzilotti, “Scratch the Surface” by Dana Kaufman, “String Poetic” by Jennifer Higdon and “Sueños de Chambi” by Gabriel Lena Frank.

“I picked some fiendishly difficult music to play but it was so worth it,” Winter says. “I learned so much about preparing for recordings and what that actually entails.”

Winter worked with pianist and Postdoctoral Lecturer Barbara Noyes, as well as Kevin Harbison to record all four pieces over the course of seven months. Winter will continue the project over the summer with the goal of finding a label to disseminate the recordings.

Congratulations to all grant recipients and our thanks to this year’s adjudicators: College of Music staff member Kathryn Bistodeau, Music Advisory Board member Laurie Hathorn and University of Denver entrepreneurship faculty member Neil Pollard.

Trump appears on YouTuber Logan Paul’s podcast in a bid for young voters

A split composite of Donald Trump and Logan Paul.

Former President Donald Trump made an unexpected campaign stop Thursday, appearing on controversial YouTuber and professional wrestler Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast .

During the episode, which contained a roughly 45-minute interview, Trump urged young voters like Paul’s followers to vote for him over President Joe Biden, who he said had a “less than 1% chance” of joining Paul’s podcast. Paul has extended an invitation to Biden to come on the show, too.

The “Impaulsive” interview tracks with Trump’s continued push into social media as the November election nears. As some young voters have begun to question their allegiances to Biden, Trump has started to appear on popular podcasts and other new media venues. In the past several years, Trump has made appearances with conservative podcaster Tim Pool and YouTubers the Nelk Boys. He joined TikTok at the beginning of the month and his second post was with Paul, filmed shortly after their podcast wrapped.

Paul has been one of the most successful and profitable YouTubers since 2013. He has more than 23 million subscribers and his podcast episodes frequently surpass 1 million views. Recent “Impaulsive” guests include comedian Kevin Hart, football player Patrick Mahomes and former wrestler John Cena.

Paul asked Trump a number of questions about pop culture, including whether he has knowledge of aliens’ existence (Trump said it’s “very possible”) and if he thinks his younger brother Jake Paul will beat Mike Tyson in an upcoming fight (Trump said Tyson’s age could affect his chances).

Trump also commented on the emergence of artificial intelligence and deepfakes that have been used to create fake videos of him advertising scams , calling the technology “really powerful stuff.” Trump said he has met with tech leaders, including Elon Musk, to discuss the possibilities of AI. He said that the U.S. needed to take the lead on the technology, expending as much energy as required to compete with China. Trump also said that AI could replace speechwriters, including his own.

Musk reshared the podcast interview on X, where Paul posted it in addition to YouTube.

Trump, who was convicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in May, also gifted Paul a T-shirt with his mugshot on it. Paul commented that Trump’s support had risen following the conviction, and Trump said he was able to raise millions of dollars afterward.

After pivoting to professional wrestling in 2018, Paul was signed by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2022. He and his brother are two of the top-ranked fighters in the U.S. Paul co-founded the popular drink company Prime with fellow YouTuber KSI the same year.

During a trip to Japan in 2017, Paul infamously filmed the body of a man who died by suicide and uploaded it to YouTube. It was one of the largest controversies in the platform’s history at that point. Paul was one of the highest-paid YouTubers that year, as well as in 2018 and 2021, according to Forbes.

Research: How Remote Work Impacts Women at Different Stages of Their Careers

  • Natalia Emanuel,
  • Emma Harrington,
  • Amanda Pallais

young yachting professionals

Data on software engineers at a Fortune 500 company revealed that junior and senior women saw contrasting costs and benefits.

While much has been said about the potential benefits of remote work for women, recent research examines how working from home affects the professional development of female software engineers at a Fortune 500 company, revealing that its impact varies by career stage. Junior women engineers benefit significantly from in-person mentorship, receiving 40% more feedback when sitting near colleagues, while senior women face reduced productivity due to increased mentoring duties. Male engineers also benefit from proximity, but less so. The authors suggest that recognizing and rewarding mentorship efforts could mitigate these disparities, ensuring junior women receive adequate support remotely and senior women are properly compensated for their mentoring contributions.

Since the pandemic began, work from home (WFH) has at times been pitched as a means of supporting women in the workplace. This argument often focuses on WFH’s potential to help women juggle the demands of their jobs with the demands of their families. However, WFH’s impact on women’s professional development may vary over their careers. In our research, we explored how WFH impacts young women as they try to get a foothold in their careers and how it affects the often-invisible mentorship work done by more senior women.
