Experts puzzle over why Bayesian yacht sank. Was it a 'black swan event'?

Portrait of Cybele Mayes-Osterman

The Bayesian set off on a leisurely cruise around Italy's southern coast on a sunny day in late July.

The luxurious super yacht − which boasted one of the largest masts in the world and carried a crew of business moguls, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family and a chair of Morgan Stanley − set sail from the Amalfi Coast, bound for Sicily.

Less than a month later, the ship had sunk 160 feet under the water , leaving its cook dead and six of its passengers, including at least two Americans, missing and prompting a massive search that has drawn international attention.

Now, experts are trying to piece together why in the early hours Monday the Bayesian was quickly pulled under the waves amid a storm that saw at least one tornado spin up over the water.

A perfect storm led to Bayesian sinking, experts say

The combination of unlikely factors that could have contributed to the ship's fate constituted a "black swan event," Matthew Schanck, chairman of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told USA TODAY.

The Bayesian was well-built: A 2008 product of Italian ship maker Perini, it was constructed in accordance with international maritime standards and commercially certified by the U.K.'s Maritime and Coastguard Agency, according to Schanck.

The bout of bad weather that swept the area when the ship went down was also out of the ordinary in the northern Mediterranean, "which isn't renowned for prolonged, significant stormy weather," he said.

"The fact that those two elements have then resulted in the foundering of a super yacht is pretty extraordinary," Schanck said. "These things don't happen every day."

After the ship sank just before 5 a.m. local time, 15 people, including a 1-year-old, were pulled from the water. Some were rescued from a life raft by the crew of a ship docked nearby.

Ricardo Thomas, the ship's cook and a native of Antigua, was found dead, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday, six people were missing, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Several missing passengers were involved in Lynch's trial on fraud charges, including Jonathan Bloomer, a Morgan Stanley chair who served as his character witness, and one of Lynch's attorneys. Lynch, accused of fraud after he sold his company to electronics giant Hewlett-Packard, was acquitted of all charges weeks ago.

Who is Mike Lynch? UK entrepreneur among those missing after superyacht sinks off Sicily

Tornado formed over unusually hot water

Storms in the area that night may have whipped up a water spout, a tornado over the water , according to local meteorologists.

It was likely triggered by the water's unusual warmth, said Rick Shema, a certified consulting meteorologist who served in the Navy.

"The water spout was an uncommon occurrence," he said. "But again, these things happen, especially in warmer water."

At 83.7 degrees, water in the area was more than 3 degrees hotter than average on the day the Bayesian sank, likely the result of climate change, Shema said.

"Hurricanes can form at 80 degrees. This was almost four degrees higher than that," he said.

The water spout may have spun up when cooler air dropped from mountainous places nearby onto the hot water, he said. "A water spout is a vortex, basically like a tornado, spinning real fast, sucking up water and moisture as the column rises," he said.

Although water spouts only reach around 120 mph, as compared to tornadoes on land, which can reach up to 300 mph, "you don't need 200 mph to sink a ship," he said.

"Even an average tornado, 120 miles an hour, that's a lot of wind," he said, "which would heel the boat over for sure."

Water spouts spring up suddenly, Shema said. Before they strike, winds can be slow, but "once the water spout comes over, bam, it's on," he said.

Before sunrise, the ship's crew may not have seen the water spout coming. "The visibility was probably a big factor," he said.

With the windows of the yacht opened, as they likely were in the hot weather, the water spout could have triggered water that flooded through the portholes, Shema said, causing the ship to sink.

Tragedy strikes: Scramble to find survivors after Bayesian yacht sinks off Sicily coast

Search continues, but shift to recovery phase approaches

Italian authorities said the Bayesian was probably at anchor when the storm struck, meaning it couldn't maneuver and ride the waves, according to Mitchell Stoller, a captain and maritime expert witness. Other ships in the area that turned on their engines rode out the storm, he said.

"When you're at anchor and you see weather, you start your engine and you put the wind on the bow. You don't let it get on the side," he said.

Schanck said another key question concerns the position of the keel, a heavy weight underneath the boat that acts as a counterbalance to keep it upright, when the ship sank. When lifted, "that's going to affect the stability of the vessel, because, obviously, you've now raised the center of gravity of that vessel," he said.

The Bayesian was floating over 160 feet of water at the time, deep enough that the keel would likely be deployed. But the fact that "the vessel heeled over so heavily makes me question that," Schanck said.

The cause of the disaster may not be known until the ship can be examined in more detail, experts say. Prosecutors in a nearby town have already opened an investigation.

Schanck said investigators will have plenty to work with once the operation moves into a recovery phase.

"The vessel is intact and in good condition on the seabed," he said. "There's a lot of eyewitness accounts from other vessels in the area and the shore."

As the search entered its second day on Tuesday, the rescue effort may shift in that direction soon. "I suspect, later on, today or tomorrow, we'll probably see some mention of a recovery operation being stated," Schanck said.

The decision to would depend on whether rescuers find signs of life in the ship and air pockets or survivable spaces, Schanck said. At this point, survivors on the water's surface looks unlikely. "My professional opinion is that the casualties will be located within the vessel," he said.

"There is a risk versus benefit in all maritime search and rescue incidents," he said. "Where we start transitioning to a recovery phase, that line shifts."

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Mike Lynch remains missing after a luxury yacht sank off of Sicily's coast. Lynch, who sold his tech firm Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011, had recently been acquitted of fraud charges related to the sale.

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

A rescue boat of the Italian Coast Guard operates in Porticello near Palermo, on Tuesday, a day after the British-flagged luxury yacht Bayesian sank. Specialist divers launched a fresh search for six people, including U.K. tech tycoon Mike Lynch.

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

Bay Ship & Yacht a pillar of Alameda’s maritime industry

Author

Johnson, then a port engineer for Foss Maritime, called Alameda’s Bay Ship & Yacht. The shipyard rustled some workers out of bed to hoist Johnson’s vessel out of the water and begin emergency repairs.

“There have been many situations like that, and I’ve never had anything they couldn’t handle,” said Johnson, now the marine superintendent for the San Francisco Bar Pilots.

Most activity at the facility isn’t that dramatic, but it’s no less important for keeping an engine of the Bay Area economy shipshape.

Up to 300 vessels berth annually at Bay Ship & Yacht, where 250 employees repair, rebuild and maintain everything from workhorse tugboats to commuter ferries and floating pleasure palaces.

“They’re a bit like God. If Bay Ship disappeared tomorrow, it would be nothing less than a crisis,” said Bobby Winston, the proprietor of Bay Crossings, a monthly maritime newspaper. “You’d have to invent them.”

Bill Elliott founded the company in 1977 as a mobile construction-and-repair outfit specializing in wooden ships. It settled in its current home next to Rosenblum Cellars Winery on Main Street in 1994 and has been growing steadily ever since.

“Over the last few years, we’ve incorporated a lot of new facilities, moving forward to become a 21st-century shipyard,” said Ira Maybaum, Bay Ship’s director of business development.

Its sweet spot is midsize working boats — ferries, fishing boats, military vessels, tugboats and barges — that experts say are integral to the area’s economy.

The company itself is now one of Alameda’s largest private employers, said Lori Taylor, Alameda’s community development director. She estimates the island’s maritime industry currently employs about 1,000 people, with Bay Ship & Yacht the largest contributor.

James Dalske, assistant dean of students at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, said the area’s maritime industry took a big hit during the recession but is bouncing back. Bay Ship & Yacht, he said, helps boat-based businesses thrive and stay local by providing the critical support they need.

That support was on full display one recent afternoon, as crews overhauled the 31-guest room National Geographic Sea Lion cruise ship, painted the WETA ferry Pisces and refueled the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Pike. In nearby warehouses, tradesmen fabricated the complex machinery that keeps boats afloat as workers tooled around the sprawling shipyard on bicycles.

One repeat customer is the National Park Service. It’s hired Bay Ship & Yacht for several projects, including the $10 million-plus refurbishment of the 1895 schooner C.A. Thayer, which is docked at San Francisco’s Hyde Street Pier.

The wooden-ship reconstruction required craftsmen to specially bend pieces of lumber, said Lynn Cullivan, a park ranger there.

“That’s pretty specialized. It was a hard, intricate and delicate job to do,” he said.

Today Bay Ship is increasingly targeting the mogul market. Super yachts, or yachts longer than 100 feet, often bypass San Francisco Bay for warmer climates. Maybaum hopes the upcoming America’s Cup in 2013, with races beginning next year, can put the area — and its ship facilities — on the map of their well-heeled owners.

But it’s already making a name for itself in the rarefied super-yacht world. Workers will soon begin lengthening a 170-foot super yacht by some 36 feet.

“We’ll literally cut it in half, then insert the midbody, which we’re getting ready to build right now,” Maybaum said.

Maybaum said it’s that kind of diverse service offering that will keep business sailing along Alameda’s waterfront.

Added Winston of Bay Crossings, “The ferries and barges and tugboats are here, and they always are going to be here. The everyday work of commerce, all of that would stop if you didn’t have a shipyard to keep these things going.”

The Bayesian yacht was the victim of a "black swan event", says the head of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

Matthew Schanck says: "Looking at the extreme weather, if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event."

Waterspout is the name for a tornado-like rotating column of air spawned from the base of a cloud, usually during a thunderstorm.

"Even outside of the maritime industry, all industries struggle with the black swan events."

A black swan event is a term used to refer to a high-impact, rare incident that is difficult to predict, but is often rationalised in retrospect as having been inevitable.

Mr Schanck says he was confident the authorities would "get to the bottom" of what caused the shipwreck, thanks to the accounts of survivors, witnesses and examination of the ship.

Search and rescue teams will be trying to identify if any more survivors could have escaped from the yacht, says marine investigator James Wilkes.

Speaking to Sky News, he says they will want to get into cabins as quickly as possible to "identify whether there is anybody still left on the vessel or whether the missing people could have escaped from the vessel and be somewhere else".

The "safety of life at sea" will be a priority, he says, and the depth of the wreck at around 50m underwater means divers can only spend around ten minutes down there at a time, with their work further hampered by blocks to passageways.

But remote operating vehicles will be able to scan the wreck and use CCTV to find an access point to make diving and the recovery of any bodies much safer for the teams.

Mr Wilkes says it looks like the boat was hit by a "very intense and significant" weather incident and investigators will be looking at how seawater flooded into the very large yacht, which has a lot of open deck space.

He says "it's shocking and disturbing" how quickly the yacht went down, adding that investigators will be looking at physical evidence as well as talking to witnesses and survivors to confirm the theory.

By Ashna Hurynag , news correspondent

The British mother who says she held her baby daughter above the waves as the yacht sank near Sicily was sleeping on deck as the storm hit, an Italian doctor has said.

Charlotte Golunski was among 22 people on board the Bayesian when a tornado struck on Monday morning, with one dead and another six still missing.

Ms Golunski, 35, survived along with 14 others, revealing to Italian newspaper la Repubblica she held her daughter Sofia "afloat with all [her] strength".

Speaking to Sky News correspondent Ashna Hurynag, the head of paediatric care at the Di Cristina Children's Hospital in Palermo said Ms Golunski was away from her partner at the time of the storm.

"She said that she was sleeping with the child on deck while her husband was a little further away in another part of the boat and she felt the oscillations of the ship," Dr Domenico Cipolla said.

"In an instant it was dark and she found herself in the water in just a few minutes. She said she tried to hold on to the child but lost the child from her grip for three seconds.

"She then managed to catch her in the water."

Read on here...

A freak wave may have flooded the yacht with water through an open door or hatch, causing it to sink, according to reports.

Investigators believe the vessel sank because of a waterspout during a heavy thunderstorm.

But they are trying to understand how the boat went down in just 60 seconds when a smaller vessel around 100m away remained intact, according to La Repubblica.

The Italian newspaper reports the hull and the mainmast are intact and there are no signs of any collisions.

The most widely accepted theory is that during the storm an enormous amount of water entered the boat because of a freak wave from the stern in a very short time, probably through a door that had been left open, it says.

This would have caused the yacht to immediately lose balance and sink.

Search and rescue boats have been spotted heading back out to sea this morning.

The Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at around 5am local time on Monday.

Rescue crews, technicians, engineers and the port authority held a briefing to take stock as the search resumed around 6.30am local time, reports Giornale Di Sicilia.

Divers aim to reach the cabins of the ship today, aided by patrol boats and helicopters.

A very strong, lightning-heavy thunderstorm struck the Italian coastline on the evening the yacht sank, says a meteorologist at the University of Reading.

Dr Peter Inness tells Sky News the conditions meant it wouldn't be surprising if a waterspout - a member of the tornado family - was responsible.

That coast of Sicily is one of the world hotspots for waterspouts, he says.

"There was a very strong, active thunderstorm that afternoon and evening, going into the night. Lots and lots of lightning. And that's the kind of situation that can spawn waterspouts very easily.

"So if it was a waterspout that hit the boat, it wouldn't be a surprise."

But while you can estimate conditions, Dr Inness says it is "almost impossible" to predict when and where waterspouts will occur.

Waterspouts explained: A waterspout is a rotating column of air spawned from the base of a cloud, usually during a thunderstorm.

Most waterspouts are fairly mild and only tens of metres in diameter.

The divers' priority is to reach the cabins, where the missing tourists may have been sleeping at the time of the storm, says news correspondent Ashna Hurynag.

But they have been hampered by the amount of debris and furniture in the boat.

Search and rescue teams speculate some of that furniture was dislodged as the yacht capsized, blocking doorways and preventing people from escaping, says Hurynag.

" They're really being hampered by the amount of furniture, the amount of debris that is underwater within that vessel.

"The yacht is also in a complicated position. It's tilted on its side."

She adds: "They're having to work under very tight conditions and in searing heat."

Equipment has been shipped to the east coast of Palermo to aid their efforts, including an underwater remote-controlled search vehicle.

" People are expecting perhaps to see the hull of the ship being lifted up, the vessel itself being lifted out of the water: That's not going to be anything we're going to see for a very, very long time," says Hurynag.

" The priority is to try and preserve its position as much as possible because it is intact, and try and access it from outside."

As the search operation continues, investigators are attempting to figure out how the boat sank.

The captain will be key to this investigation, says Hurynag - as well as questions over the design of the boat and the weather -  but he "was in an incredible amount of shock" when he spoke yesterday.

Italy's fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco said it has developed a plan to enter the wreckage of the yacht.

Nineteen divers have been going down in groups of three and attempting to open a passage at the stern, La Repubblica reported.

This involves breaking through a glass window in the lounge area of the main deck to access the interior of the 56-meter yacht.

But efforts to reach the cabins are still obstructed by a "world of objects", fire department diver Marco Tilotta told Reuters news agency.

"So, getting inside and descending into the compartment below from the stairs that are narrow and going into all of the cabins is a really hard and difficult job.

"We are not stopping. We have resources, manpower and means."

The Italian coastguard has not ruled out the possibility that those missing may still be alive, with experts speculating air pockets could have formed as the yacht sank.

That the vessel sank at speed and remains intact on its side "could favour the formation of small air pockets inside", said Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer of mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University.

"This is obviously highly speculative and impossible to predict accurately."

Nick Sloane, who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia in 2012, told Sky News: "They've got a very small window of time to try to find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued."

Jeremy Bloomer, the twin brother of missing Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, told the BBC his fingers were crossed.

"It's a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don't know. It's still wait and see, so fingers crossed."

David Tabizel, who established software company Autonomy with missing British tycoon Mike Lynch, told Sky News: "I'm just heartbroken for him and his family and I hope there's a miracle about to occur.

"If anyone has the resilience to survive this - he does. And I hope he's found an air pocket."

Dr Souppez said a sign the rescuers may be looking for is a "banging noise at regular intervals".

"This is common practice on submarines and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year."

Yesterday, Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian coastguard said the missing were unlikely to be alive.

"Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not."

Welcome back to our live coverage of the Bayesian shipwreck, as the search for six missing tourists, including four Britons, enters its third day.

Still unaccounted for are British tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy Bloomer; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Divers spent Tuesday struggling to enter the cabins of the superyacht on the seabed off the Sicilian coast, after confirming the bridge was empty.

Italian authorities said their working theory is the missing are still inside the boat, as search crews cut a hole in the hull in an attempt to gain access.

An engineer who led the salvage operation for the wrecked cruise ship Costa Concordia in 2012 warned rescue divers entered a "critical" 24 hours yesterday.

The coastguard confirmed a body found after the yacht sank yesterday was that of chef Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan national who was working on the Bayesian superyacht.

And the captain of the Bayesian spoke for the first time on Tuesday, saying of the storm: "We didn't see it coming."

The sinking of the Bayesian superyacht

  • READ MORE:  'Britain's Bill Gates' and his daughter are among six feared dead

What was an elaborate celebration to commemorate Mike Lynch's high stakes fraud acquittal turned into tragedy as his superyacht fell victim to a freak water spout.

The luxury sailboat was docked off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo, when a 'whirlwind' hit the area just before 5am this morning, wrecking the boat and causing it to rapidly disappear beneath the waves.

The yacht had been visible to surrounding ships before it suddenly vanished, claiming the life of one person while six remain missing.

Fifteen of the 22 people onboard were rescued by Sir Robert BP, a Dutch  sailing ship, which was in front of the yacht.

British tech tycoon Lynch had reportedly invited his family and friends on the sailboat to celebrate charges of fraud and conspiracy for allegedly scheming to inflate a company's value before it was sold being dropped.

'At around 4:30 in the morning it was gone. A beautiful vessel where there had been a party. A normal holiday day spent happily at sea turned into a tragedy,' a witness told Italian news agency ANSA.

As a desperate search effort is underway to find the missing six - including British and American tourists - MailOnline takes a look at how the tragedy unfolded.

The storm hitting

The superyacht was lit up and illuminating the water when a water spout suddenly occured in close proximity to the boat.

Just before 5am in the morning, the yacht became caught up in the spout and then suddenly disappeared, according to witnesses.

The yacht going down

Witnesses have described the moment the yacht went down as very sudden, claiming it was as if it just disappeared.

One person said: 'The boat was all lit up. Around 4.30 am, it was no longer there.

'A beautiful boat where there was a party. A normal joyous vacation day at sea turned into tragedy.'

Meanwhile, the captain of the Dutch ship which saved 15 of the 22 people onboard the yacht also claimed the boat disappeared.

Captain Karsten Borner told the BBC: 'After the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone.'

He added: 'With a light we saw that the ship was inside [the water], and then we saw a triangle. So I think she went back. Terrible. Terrible moment.'

Passengers rescued

Fifteen of the 22 passengers - including British and American tourists - were saved by Captain Borner's Dutch ship.

Once the storm subsided, Borner said he and his friend noticed a flare in the water, and made their way towards it.

There they found the lifeboat with those who had escaped inside, including a one-year-old baby and mother Charlotte Golunski.

Among the six still missing are British billionaire tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter.

Search rescue

A massive search operation to find the six still missing continues today.

Tragically, the body of a man - believed to be a Canadian national who was working as the boat's chef - was found floating alongside the vessel earlier today.

There are fears that those who are still missing became trapped in their cabins, with divers earlier reporting that they saw 'bodies through the portholes' of the yacht, according to Italian media.

Bay Ship & Yacht opens US West Coast's only covered dry dock

Bay Ship & Yacht one of America’s leading construction and refit yards for superyachts, recently expanded its capacity by unveiling a new covered dry dock.

The new facility accommodates vessels displacing up to 6,300LT with a maximum beam of 76 feet. Currently the only dry dock on the West Coast to be fully enclosed by a retractable roof, this new high-tech facility on San Francisco Bay, California, is a conversion of the submersible Hughes Mining Barge (HMB-1), which played a fascinating role in a covert Cold War operation.

According to CIA documents declassified in 2012, the HMB-1 was built in the 1970s by the U.S. Navy as part of Project Azorian, a top-secret plan to salvage the Soviet submarine K-129 , which sank while reportedly carrying three nuclear-armed ballistic missiles. The ruggedly built HMB-1 was designed to submerge to 160 feet and sit on the seabed during the transfer of heavy equipment required to retrieve the sub. After Project Azorian’s successful conclusion, the HMB-1 was transferred to Lockheed Martin, where it became a floating dry dock for the Navy’s experimental 164-foot SWATH vessel Sea Shadow , a test bed for stealth technology.

Today, the new HMB-1 dry dock, which has a 69-foot retractable roof, offers Bay Ship & Yacht clients a covered environment for superyacht service, repair and refit projects.

History of Voronezh

16th century.

In 1585 Tsar Feodor I ordered the construction of a fortress on the River Voronezh to protect Russia from Crimean and Nogai Tatar raids. The fortress was completed in 1586 and this year is considered the official year of Voronezh's foundation, even though it may have existed as a settlement even as far back as the 12th century. Just a few years later in 1590 the fortress was burned to the ground during a Cossack-Cherkas raid. The fortress was reconstructed in 1594 .

17th Century

Time of troubles.

In 1605 Voronezh supported the cause of the First False Dmitri and even after his death in 1606 the city refused to recognise Vasily Shuisky as tsar. In 1610 Voronezh gave its support to the Second False Dmitry, who set up a refuge in the city although was unable to take advantage of it. In 1613 Ivan Zarutsky and his Cossacks, allies of Poland-Lithuania, retreated to Voronezh but a division of troops in the city blocked his route, defeated him in battle and forced him to retreat south to Astrakhan .

Bishop Mitrofan of Voronezh

Depiction of Bishop Mitrofan of Voronezh with Peter the Great

In 1681 the Voronezh Eparchy was established from the Ryazan Eparchy and its first bishop - Bishop Mitrofan - took up office in 1682 who set about establishing the authority of the Orthodox Church in this area of Cossacks, Old-Believers and outlaws. Between 1684 and 1692 a new cathedral was built for the eparchy - the Annunciation Cathedral - upon the initiative of Bishop Mitrofan. Bishop Mitrofan was acquainted with Peter the Great and on one occasion Peter requested the presence of Mitrofan. Upon seeing the pagan statues that adorned Peter's Voronezh residence, Mitrofan returned home. Peter was so angry that Mitrofan had disobeyed him that he ordered he present himself at once or face execution. Nevertheless Mitrofan refused to attend until the pagan idols were removed and he waited in his chambers expecting to be arrested. However surprisingly it was Peter that uncharacteristically backed down, so impressed was he by Mitrofan's conviction. Mitrofan died in 1703 .

18th Century

Shipbuilding.

Engraving of Voronezh in the 18th Century

After Russia's First Campaign against Azov in 1695 it became apparent that the campaign was unsuccessful due to Russia's lack of a naval fleet and so Peter the Great set about to rectify this. Peter decided to establish an admiralty wharf in Voronezh to build his new fleet and shipbuilding began in 1696 . Thanks to the new fleet Russia was successful in the Second Azov Campaign in the winter of 1696 . The success cemented Peter's ambition for Russia to become a naval power. Between 1696 and 1722 Peter visited Voronezh 13 times to oversee the shipbuilding and in total spend over 500 days there, making it the de facto capital whilst there. In 1698 the first Russian ship of the line - the Goto Predestinatsia - was completed at the Voronezh Admiralty Wharf.

Reform and Redevelopment

Engraving of Voronezh in the 19th century by Vasily Timm

Under Peter the Great's administrative reforms of 1708 Voronezh became the centre of the Voronezh Province of the Azov Governorate. From 1715 onwards Voronezh was the centre of the Azov Governorate although it was only renamed the Voronezh Governorate in 1725 . After several fires destroyed much of the city, Catherine the Great adopted in 1774 a new regulated city plan for the redevelopment of Voronezh. In 1781 a coat of arms was adopted depicting a black eagle on a yellow background and a silver jug spilling silver water down a golden hill on a red background.

19th Century

St mitrofan of voronezh.

Engraving of the internment of the relics of St Mitrofan of Voronezh

In 1832 it was decided to canonise the 17th century Bishop Mitrofan of Voronezh as St Mitrofan of Voronezh. A ceremony took place in Voronezh to mark the opening of his relics in the Annunciation Cathedral, which Emperor Nicholas I even attended. However this was marked by tragedy as the massing of pilgrims resulted in an outbreak of cholera. In 1836 the Blagoveschensky Mitrofansky Monastery was established around the Annunciation Cathedral.

20th Century

Soviet power.

Postcard depicting the Blagoveschensky Mitrofansky Monastery before the Revolution

In 1905 pogroms, mutinies and mass strikes all took place in Voronezh. After the October Revolution, the 5th machine-gun regiment in the city rose up and enabled the Bolsheviks to secure power in Voronezh. In 1928 Voronezh became the administrative centre of the Central Black Earth Region, so called due to the fertile soil of the region. In 1931 the Bolsheviks blew up Voronezh's Our Lady of Vladimir Church. In 1934 the Voronezh Region was later created from the dissolved Central Black Earth Region.

Second World War

Photograph of Voronezh after the Second World War

By 1942 Voronezh found itself on the frontline and was periodically subjected to air raids by the Luftwaffe.  On 28 June 1942 the Nazis launched the Battle for Voronezh and parts of the city fell on 7 July 1942 and remained occupied by the Nazis until 25 January 1943 . Thousands of Nazi soldiers were taken prisoner during the liberation, but the Red Army liberators found an almost completely devastated city.  It has been estimated that up to 92% of residential houses were destroyed during the occupation.  In 2008 Voronezh was named a City of Military Glory for the heroism shown by its defenders during the partial occupation of Voronezh which did not allow the strategically important city to be completely captured.
