Founded in 1873

Founded by Lorenzo Benetti

Benetti is one of the oldest builders of luxury motoryachts in the world. Established by Lorenzo Benetti in 1873, the company began life building wooden boats used for local and international trade.

After the death of Lorenzo, his two sons Gino and Emilio took over the management of the boatyard. They changed its name to Fratelli Benetti and quickly built up a reputation that extended beyond the Mediterranean. After the Second World War, with the disappearance of commercial sailing vessels built from wood, Benetti changed direction and began producing pleasure craft made from steel. Then in the early 1960s the boatyard produced its first luxury mega yachts.

Since 1980 the fleet has included big motor yachts in the 30 to 60 meter range and beyond, not least the famous 86-meter ‘Nabila’.

In 1985 the Boatyard was acquired by the celebrated Turin-based boat builder Azimut Spa, which brought in new management and transformed Benetti into the modern, technologically advanced reality we know today: a forward-looking and innovative boatyard, but also one that proudly retains its traditional values of experience, skill and a passion for fine craftsmanship.

Benetti was established in 1873, making it the oldest Italian builder of motor yachts and an icon of timeless Italian styling and construction excellence. Each yacht is unique and built to suit the owner’s needs and desires.

This Italian shipyard designs, builds and markets vessels in composite materials, aluminium and steel from 29-45m and boats in steel and aluminium from 45 to more than 100m. The fleet consists of five categories: Class, Oasis, B.Yond, B.Now and Custom designed to meet all the needs of the market.

Benetti employs highly skilled specialists at its two production sites, Livorno and the headquarters in Viareggio. There are also offices in Fort Lauderdale, Dubai, Hong Kong and London. Benetti is part of Azimut|Benetti Group, the world’s largest privately owned yacht builder and a guarantee of continuity and financial stability. Founder and majority shareholder Paolo Vitelli has been firmly at the helm for the last 50 years.

The Global Order Book 2021, the ranking published each year by highly reputed UK magazine Boat International to report on industry trends for yachts over 24 metres in length, based on actual order data, has recognised Azimut|Benetti Group as the world’s top super yacht builder, with 100 projects over 80 feet totalling 3,521 metres in length.

The report by Boat International took account of work at 179 shipyards worldwide where yachts over 24 metres in length are built, revealing that top ranking Azimut Benetti has a 12% share of the market in this segment based on the 821 projects analysed, with a lead over the second ranking player of 16% in terms of number of projects and 432 metres by length. This recognition takes on a special meaning this year when we remember the difficulties faced over the last 12 months by the yachting industry, like the economy as a whole, as a result of the crisis caused by the pandemic.

On this subject, it is important to remember not only how quickly and effectively the Group responded to a complex situation, but most importantly its determination to continue to invest steadily in the development of new products. This decision has been repaid by the arrival on the market of models that have been admired and bought “on paper” before even touching the water, like Benetti’s Oasis 40M, with 12 units sold just two months after the yacht’s debut, and the Azimut Yachts Trideck, which has already sold five units before the official presentation. Great success also for Benetti’s steel and aluminium production, with a special focus on the B.Now, B.YOND and Custom categories. Other than the recent sales of 2 B.Yond 37M and 3 B.Now 50M, 6 custom yachts, 60-meter and over in length and with steel hull, are currently under construction at the Benetti shipyard in Livorno. Azimut|Benetti’s leadership is therefore the result of the Group’s historical assets – ongoing research into innovative approaches, the drive to introduce cutting-edge technology, financial solidity and, last but not least, a close-knit global distribution and assistance network – as well as the ability to anticipate owners’ expectations, which include a growing concern for sustainability issues.

A final crucial factor from a geographical perspective is Azimut|Benetti’s high profile in the most important regions for super yacht sales, like the United States, where the Group has been market leader for years, as well as in particularly promising ones, as South East Asian countries are proving to be.

Famous for its Italian style and award-winning superyachts , Benetti Yachts is both one of Europe’s oldest boat builders, and its most prolific. With a proud maritime heritage stretching back to 1873, Benetti turned to the leisure yacht market in the 1950s, and combined with its parent group, Azimut , the yard has maintained its dominance as the world’s largest superyacht builder since 1999. Over the years, Benetti has launched some of the industry’s most celebrated yachts from its Livorno and Viareggio yards, and it remains one of the few family-owned superyacht builders in the world. Benetti Yachts currently produces custom and semi-custom superyachts in GRP or steel and aluminium from 37m to 100+m.

The Yachts That Make Benetti Great

The Benetti fleet has a rich celebrity history, with a lengthy roll call of iconic yachts. After a proud history of building commercial sailing and naval vessels, Benetti’s expansion into private yachts began in the 1950’s, but true success came when it swapped wood construction for steel in 1961, launching its semi-displacement Delfino range complete with a wood-panelled interior, roomy aft salon, and modern galley. This groundbreaking design, which separated crew and guests for the first time, was the genesis of modern superyacht design, and rather astonishingly, was arrived at by one Euginio Manfredi, a designer who had never stepped foot on a boat. Manfredi had created a sensation, and Benetti yachts quickly became a status symbol, with the Tirenno, Mediterraneo, and Gabbiano series following the Delfino. In 1979, the staggeringly large custom 85m NABILA (later Trump Princess, now KINGDOM 5KR) was launched from the Benetti yard in 1979. From the 1960’s to the early 1980’s, Benetti’s reputation flourished. Prince Rainier III and Grace Kelly were photographed aboard the Benetti GABBIANO in Monaco in 1963, Freddy Mercury wrote Kashoggi’s Ship after a particularly wild party aboard NABILA, and NABILA was also a film location for Sean Connery’s Bond in Never Say Never Again. Yet despite Benetti’s extraordinary achievements and notoriety, NABILA would also spell the end of Benetti as it was, with a budget blowout and ironclad contract forcing Benetti into bankruptcy proceedings in 1984. Enter Azimut , a family-owned yacht builder who would take Benetti to new heights, notably the hugely popular semi-custom line 50m Golden Bay series, which launched in 1995 and consolidated the Benetti name across the yachting world. Today, the Benetti brand continues to break new barriers. In 2020, Benetti launched three yachts over 100m in 100 days, the 107m LUMINOSITY, 107m LANA, and 108m IJE. Benetti currently builds custom yachts , as well as four ranges of semi-custom yachts, including the game-changing Oasis series with its open aft deck and plunge pool. Benetti is also at the forefront of environmental and hybrid propulsion advancements.

Italian megayacht-builder Benetti crafts custom and semi-custom steel-and-aluminum yachts 93 feet to more than 213 feet (28 meters to more than 65 meters) in length under out of its Viareggio, Fano, and Livorno shipyards. Founder Paolo Vitelli started the company in Turin in 1969 as a sailboat charter company named Azimut . In 1977, the company produced what at the time was the smallest yacht, the AZ 32-foot Targa, considered to be the Model T of the marine industry. Azimut took over the Fratelli Benetti boatyard in Viareggio in 1985, creating the Azimut Benetti Group, which has continued to expand into all things nautical, including, most recently, marinas.

Another large accomplishment is the 230-foot (70-meter) steel-and-aluminum Luxury Yacht FREEDOM (ex. REVERIE) . She features a top speed of 16 knots and a range of 5,200 nautical miles at 12 knots. Yacht FREEDOM is powered by two CAT 3516 engines. John Munford designed the sumptuous interior, which accommodates 26 guests and 29 crew. Stefano Natucci penned the exterior styling and concept.

Benetti Yacht LUMIERE

Luxury mega yacht LUMIERE (ex Cuor di Leone,  Lionheart ) is a 164-foot (50-meter) luxury superyacht. Benetti yacht LUMIERE accommodates 12 guests and 12 crew in a light and bright interior, which was designed by Stefano Natucci, who also created the exterior. The steel-and-aluminum yacht achieves a top speed of 18.5 knots and a cruise of 16.5, thanks to two MTU diesel engines. Yacht LUMIERE boasts a range of 3,800 nautical miles.

Benetti Yacht DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

Mega-Yacht DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER was sold by Worth Avenue Yachts in December of 2013.

The 200-foot (60.95-meter) 2012 Mega Yacht DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER  showcases an interior stemming from the collaboration between owner John Staluppi and London-based designer Evan K. Marshall. Six staterooms—including two masters—sleep 12 guests, plus the yacht houses 15 crew. An elevator services all five decks. Two Caterpillar engines propel the full-displacement steel-and-aluminum yacht to a 16-knot top speed and a cruising speed of 15 knots. Traveling at 12 knots gives Benetti Yacht DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER a range of 4,800 nautical miles. A flotilla of tenders and toys complete the package.

Benetti Yacht BLAKE

On May 26th in Viareggio, Italy the shipyard launched their longest GRP hull and aluminum superstructure yacht ever. M/Y BLAKE is a 50-meter fully custom mega yacht. The Benetti Custom FB803 Project Blake is the third hull of this series featuring Benetti exteriors and Bannenberg & Rowel interiors. Sisterships for the 50m yacht BLAKE are the FB801 VICA and FB802 ZAZOU.
