powerboat courses poole

Date: 04 Mar, 2018

Covid –  This is a rapidly changing situation so please drop us an email to discuss the availability & current situation.   For some courses such as Intermediate, Tender Op and Advanced, rather than advertising dates we are speaking with each individual booking personally to ensure suitability.  Courses are available but we’d rather chat to you first to discuss the arrangements.

We run the full range of RYA Powerboat Courses but by far the most popular is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 which we run most weeks and all year round. Please contact us to book or click the tab above and book online. We regularly add extra courses to the schedule and will run a private course for two or more people booking together (or you can pay for one to one tuition at a time to suit you).  If you’re looking for the RYA Powerboat Level 1, the Intermediate, Tender Operators or Advanced please contact us and we’ll schedule a course to suit your requirements.  You do not necessarily need to have worked through the whole scheme in order to move onto the advanced courses.  If you already have boating experience please contact us to discuss the most appropriate level of course to join.

RYA Powerboat Level 1 Course:

This course is an introduction to boating techniques, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.   It is a one day introduction to powerboating and perfect for those who are unsure about going afloat, those who intend to mainly crew and youngsters from the age of 8.  Please note adults do not have to undertake Level 1 and can instead start at Level 2 if preferred, even as beginners.

RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course

This two-day entry level course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.  It focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision regulations.  There is no requirement to have completed Level 1 and you may start as a beginner at Level 2. It can be taken by those aged 12 and over but those aged 12-16 should book on a young persons course or on a private course with another family member.  The aim at the end of the course is to produce a self-sufficient powerboater in the right conditions, aware of own limitations and those of craft.

RYA Intermediate Powerboat Course

This is a two day course which develops the skills learnt on the Level 2 Powerboat course.  You will look at more advanced navigation techniques and undertaking coastal passages,  practice and refine close quarter boat handling skills and look at cruising at planning speeds.  In order to gain the maximum benefit from the course your navigation skills should be at the level of Dayskipper Theory standard.  For further information on our Dayskipper Courses please look at our Shorebased Theory courses.  We run these courses on demand so please contact us to arrange a convenient course date.

RYA Tender Operators Course

This course was designed for those operating commercially particularly in the Superyacht Industry.  It looks at skippering boats and the responsibilities towards clients with safety briefings and transfers and also looks at electronic navigation with chart plotters.  Please contact us to discuss course dates.

RYA Advanced Powerboat Course

This is a two day course looking at developing skills further and also looking at search patterns, introducing other styles of craft and night navigation.  Please note the course will involve being afloat in the dark so course times will vary throughout the year.  Your theory knowledge should be at Yachtmaster Theory Standard.  If you need to undertake additional theory training please visit our Shorebased Courses tab for information on courses or contact us to discuss bespoke training.  If you wish to work commercially please note that there is a exam to undertake which is booked separately to the course.  We can arrange this for you if needed but most candidates benefit from taking some time after the course to further develop skills learnt on the course and possibly undertake some  separate bespoke exam prep.

Further Information:

When do the courses run?  How do I find out course dates?

We run the courses to suit you, our client.  Our courses run seven days a week so if you want to book a course with a friend(s) or family just contact us with your preferred dates and we will do our best to accommodate you.  Dorset Marine Training operates all year round.  If you would like to join a scheduled course please have a loo at our calendar for Powerboat level 2 courses and contact us for details of the other courses which we schedule subject to demand.

Why should I choose Dorset Marine Training for my course?

We want people to enjoy being on the water and whilst there is a syllabus and a standard to be achieved, we also want to work with you to ensure you meet your own objectives. Some people want advice on how to get afloat after the course, others how to get started in a career on the water and other people how to take control of the boat if their partner is incapacitated. Whatever your reasons for taking the course we are keen to help you achieve these objectives. Our courses are usually run by either our Chief Instructor or our Centre Principal so you can be assured that you will receive enthusiastic and attentive instruction.

What if I want to book just one place?

There are two options: You are welcome to book the full course for yourself to ensure one to one tuition or to bring along friends or family to take the course with you.  The cost of the RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course is given on our prices page.   Alternatively, we run courses each month on which we take individual bookings and for these you may be placed on a course with other students (max ratio 3 students to one instructor).

Do I need my own boat?  What if I already have a boat?

Many of the courses can be taken on our boat or yours.  If taking the course on your own boat then we can train at a location suitable for you and up to three people can be trained at a time.  Your boat may be a RIB or another boat generally under 10m for the powerboat courses. If it is a larger boats please contact us to discuss motor cruising courses.  The price of courses are given on our prices page.  If you don’t have a boat then join a course on our RIB.

Who is the RYA Powerboat Level 2 course suitable for?

This course is suitable for both complete beginners and those who have some experience on the water but wish to develop their skills or obtain a qualification.  Primarily aimed at adults, the course can be taken by those aged 12 and over but they must be mature enough to understand the full syllabus including the theoretical aspects.  Alternatively, you could consider the Level 1 course which has less theory. If in doubt about suitability please give us a call to chat.  Don’t forget we offer bespoke tuition if you prefer during which we can focus on the skills you choose.

How many people will be on a course with me?

We usually run these courses for just two or three people who book together and there is normally just one course running at a time which means we can give you our full attention.  If you have booked an individual place then there may be other students on the course with you (max ratio of three students to one instructor).

Can I obtain an ICC or International ‘License’ via a powerboat course?

Yes the RYA Level 2 Powerboat Course does allow you to apply for an ICC. In the UK this is administered via the RYA and you should ensure you meet their eligibility requirements listed here – RYA ICC Info  . We are happy to assist with the application at the end of your course if needed.

What if the weather is bad?

It is rare that we have to cancel a course.  We are very lucky with the area in which we operate that we can usually find a protected part of the harbour to train.  In the rare event of inclement weather, we will contact you to discuss.  We can either postpone the training or issue a refund for the course if the training has not yet started.

What if I need to cancel?

Our full cancellation terms are given in our terms and conditions attached to the enquiry email we send out.  Please be assured that we understand that circumstances do occasionally change and we will do our best to work with you to rearrange training if necessary.

Who will be teaching me?

Your course will almost certainly be taught by either our Chief Instructor or Training Centre Principal.  You can therefore be assured that you will receive enthusiastic instruction from an Instructor who is keen to ensure you achieve the most from your training.

Where does the course take place?

We operate from the Port of Poole Marina.  This allows us to get out in the harbour and to our training ground very quickly.  It also means we have easy access to facilities for food stops!  If the training is on your own boat we are happy to discuss other locations.

How do I know what to expect from the course/what to bring etc

It is our belief that people get the most from their course when they are fully prepared.  We plan our courses carefully and you will be a sent an email containing full joining instructions.  If you have any questions at any time we always encourage you to contact us as we are happy to chat through any queries.

Can I find out any more information before booking?

Yes!  Please send us your contact details and we will send out an enquiry email to you with more details.

What boat will I use?

If booking a course on our boat then the courses are usually run on our 4.8m or 585 Ribcraft.  These boats are very capable craft, whilst not being intimidating in size.

Where can I find out information about the course from an independent source?

You can visit the RYA page to find out information about the RYA LEVEL 2 POWERBOATING COURSE  or other courses within the Powerboat Training scheme and to confirm that we are a recognised training centre  www.rya.org.uk .

RYA Powerboat Level 2

This is a 2 day course teaching you all the necessary skills and knowledge to drive one of the Club Ribs, Jennies or Nelsons to be able to complete duties. This course leads on successful completion to the award of the RYA Safety Boat certificate. This course covers the techniques for effective safety cover for racing dinghies and other craft. The course has a significant practical content which covers the recovery of crew in the water and dinghies sailed at the Club. This includes catamarans, single handers, skiffs and conventional dinghies. The course also covers the management of safety fleets for racing events and the identification and mitigation fo risks in the sailing area. This is particularly relevant in Poole Harbour

Courses generally take place in the Spring over two days.

  • Saturday - All day majority water based practice
  • Sunday - Morning providing safety cover to the racing at the Club, afternoon wash up

Note: All Candidates MUST HOLD a Powerboat Level 2 certificate. The candidates are expected to be confident RIB drivers as these are used as the main Club safety boats. If you are uncertain of your RIB driving standard a pre-assessment can be arranged.

Russia Punches Through Weakened Lines in Eastern Ukraine

Military analysts say Russian forces are increasingly investigating Ukrainian lines to identify weakened positions before attacking and breaking through.

  • Share full article

A man looks at the damage in his devastated home, where the windows behind him have been blown out.

By Constant Méheut

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

Russian forces have made rapid gains in the eastern Donetsk region over the past week or so, capturing a few villages and closing in on the city of Pokrovsk, one of the main Ukrainian defensive strongholds in the area.

Russian forces are now only a dozen miles from Pokrovsk after Moscow’s troops pushed along a railway line and advanced about three miles toward the city, according to open-source maps of the battlefield based on combat footage and satellite imagery. The Russian progress contrasts sharply with the slow but steady gains that Moscow had made so far this year in the Donetsk region, sometimes measured in only a few hundred yards a week.

Military analysts say the swift gains reflect Moscow’s improved ability to exploit cracks in Ukrainian defensive lines, which have been thinned by manpower shortages and strained by relentless Russian attacks along a more than 600-mile front.

In recent months, the experts say, Russian forces have increasingly focused on identifying weakened and poorly organized Ukrainian units before breaking through by throwing scores of troops and armored vehicles onto the battlefield.

“Russians probe the lines to see if a battalion holds or retreats,” said Mykola Bielieskov, a military analyst at the government-run National Institute for Strategic Studies in Ukraine. Once they “find weakened battalions and brigades,” he added, “they press them no matter the losses.”

An example was Russia’s capture last week of the eastern village of Prohres. DeepState , an analytical group with close ties to Ukraine’s army, said the capture followed what it described as a chaotic Ukrainian retreat, as soldiers north of the village were encircled by the Russians and escaped only after the troops ignored their commander’s order not to break out of the encirclement, DeepState said.

The hasty retreat appears to have allowed Russian forces to quickly capture more land. Since the fall of Prohres, they have seized more than 10 square miles of territory, according to DeepState’s battlefield map.

Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesman for Ukraine’s eastern military command, declined to comment on the situation.

Lt. Oleksandr Shyrshyn, the deputy battalion commander for Ukraine’s 47th Mechanized Brigade, which was rushed to help Ukrainian troops in the area, told Hromadske, a Ukrainian news outlet, that the disorderly withdrawal led to unnecessary casualties. He said it would have been possible to better organize the retreat and prepare more solid defensive lines further back to stop the Russian advance.

Yuri Butusov, a Ukrainian military journalist, said Russia “attacks first and foremost those brigades that have the weakest command and organization.”

“When a poorly managed crew is attacked, it can’t hold,” he wrote on Facebook .

Ukraine has faced similar battlefield challenges in recent months, with its troops either trapped in chaotic retreats or bungling rotations that allow Russia to quickly seize land.

In Avdiivka , an eastern city that Russia captured in February, Ukrainian soldiers said a failure to execute an orderly withdrawal cost lives and led to the capture of many soldiers. About two months later, the fall of Ocheretyne , a village northwest of Avdiivka, was partly blamed on a failure to properly rotate Ukrainian troops, leaving the sector undefended.

Franz-Stefan Gady, a Vienna-based military analyst, said “rotations are usually the most dangerous moment” for an army because they leave positions only partially manned as soldiers pull back.

Mr. Gady said ever-present surveillance drones hovering over the battlefield have made these rotations extremely difficult to carry out, particularly for Ukraine, whose defensive lines are already thin because of manpower shortages. Russia often tries to attack and advance just as Ukraine conducts rotations, Mr. Gady said.

Mr. Bielieskov, of the National Institute for Strategic Studies in Ukraine, said Russian advances so far had not translated into “major breakthroughs” that would allow Moscow to capture all of the Donetsk region, one of the Kremlin’s top military goals.

Still, Russia’s recent advances are threatening Ukraine’s last defensive belt in the Donetsk region. Russian forces are now within artillery range of a key road linking Pokrovsk to other Ukrainian strongholds in the area.

“The situation is critical, as the pace of the enemy’s advance is worrying,” Mr. Butusov said.

News and Analysis

Ukraine’s campaign to replenish its war-weary troops is ramping up and should help fill personnel gaps on the front line in the coming weeks. But are the new recruits ready?

Russian forces have made rapid gains in the eastern Donetsk region , capturing a few villages and closing in on the city of Pokrovsk, one of the main Ukrainian defensive strongholds in the area.

Russia’s central bank raised its key interest rate to 18% , the highest level in more than two years, in a sign of mounting concern in Moscow that the country’s wartime economy risked producing runaway inflation.

Exiled Wagner mercenaries are training Belarusian troops in what may signal Putin's puppet next door is cutting some of the strings

  • Wagner Group mercenaries cast into exile in Belarus have been training the country's soldiers.
  • Experts have noted that recent training carried out by Wagner is historically done with Russia.
  • The increased military training suggests Putin's influential grip on Belarus may be waning.

Insider Today

Russian President Vladimir Putin has historically sought dominance over Belarus, aiming to pull the neighboring state into Moscow's orbit, and the Belarusian leader has at times been characterized as Putin's puppet.

But in the wake of the Wagner Group's armed rebellion and subsequent exile, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko appears to have found an opportunity to exploit the weakened mercenary organization and reduce his country's reliance on Russia by having the ruthless fighters train his military — something in which Moscow's forces have previously been heavily involved.

Lukashenko played an important role in bringing an end to the short-lived mutiny in late June, brokering negotiations between the Kremlin and the Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. As part of the deal, Prigozhin was seemingly cast into exile in Belarus, where his mercenaries were given the chance to join him as they embarked on an uncertain future.

Eager to take advantage of the situation, Belarus offered to host Wagner fighters at an abandoned military camp in the country's central Asipovichy district so they could provide training to the country's armed forces, and in mid-July, Minsk announced that Wagner had begun training Belarusian territorial defense units.

Several weeks later, this partnership seems to have expanded.

Wagner fighters are now training Belarusian troops in exercises typically conducted in partnership with Russian soldiers, according to an analysis published on Monday by the Institute for the Study of War, a think tank in Washington, DC, that has followed these developments closely.

Wagner mercenaries recently began conducting "company-level training" elements of multiple mechanized brigades, which covered dismounted infantry maneuvering, drone evasion, and combined arms assault that featured the integration of tanks and artillery support, the analysis said.

"The Wagner Group's new role in Belarusian company-level training is notable," the analysis said. "The Belarusian military typically conducts such exercises with Russian trainers and relies on Russian planners for any multi-brigade exercises, which ISW has not yet observed Wagner Group participating in."

George Barros, an ISW analyst, told Insider that "Wagner's failed rebellion posed a very good opportunity for Lukashenko to potentially open up options to allow the Belarusian military to wean itself, perhaps over the span of a long time, off the structural dependency" of the Russian military.

ISW also noted recent cooperation between the mercenaries and a Belarusian airborne brigade that typically trains with Russia, adding that this new dynamic suggests Wagner "may seek to supplant legacy Russian-Belarusian unit relationships."

Related stories

These shifts break from the norms Moscow has sought to create. Over the past decade, "the Kremlin's been wildly successful with their integration campaign," Barros said, especially in the military. Minsk's military is relatively small, and it lacks the "connective tissues," Barros added, because Russian forces have "conducted a successful sort of corporate takeover of the higher-function planning and command and control functions of the Belarusian military."

For years Belarus has relied on Russia's economic and security support , especially as the country went through a period of domestic turmoil as a result of pro-democracy protests. In turn, Belarus has supported Russia in its invasion of Ukraine and even agreed to let Moscow store tactical nuclear weapons there. With Moscow's backing, Lukashenko has led Belarus since the mid-1990s, holding on to power despite opposition and amid questionable elections. Given that Putin has been a key ally, Lukashenko has long been considered to be under the Russian leader's thumb.

But the aftermath of the Wagner rebellion has exposed some irregularities in the countries' relationship. Lukashenko bragged about saving Moscow from the mutiny, which experts described as a "humiliating" moment for Putin. But more than that, he appears to be exploiting the situation.

"Perhaps Lukashenko saw the aftermath of the rebellion and realized it failed," Barros said. "Prigozhin needs a lifeline, and Lukashenko has a problem that is known to everybody in that my military is systematically and structurally dependent on the Russians. They have a common adversary in Moscow now, and they can actually mutually benefit from each other."

By taking advantage of Wagner's presence and increasing military ties, Lukashenko seems to be weakening the gravitational pull that Russia exerts over Belarus. And the move has been in the works for weeks.

On July 17, Lukashenko signed a law creating a people's militia, likely a group of volunteers who'd train under Wagner. Shortly after that, Wagner troops began training internal troops, the Belarusian deputy commander of the internal troops confirmed on July 25.

Prigozhin said in a video from the Belarus camp in late July that Wagner forces would remain in Belarus "for some time" and prepare to eventually head to Africa, where the mercenary organization already has a footprint in several countries and has been accused of widespread human-rights abuses and a laundry list of atrocities.

Lukashenko, meanwhile, has praised the Wagner fighters and welcomed the military training with open arms. According to the state-run news site Belta , Lukashenko said Tuesday that the mercenaries would "help us totally for free and pass on their experience."

"I need to train my own military personnel because an army that doesn't fight is half an army," Lukashenko said, according to an English translation of his remarks. "You also understand it perfectly well. I don't want to fight. I don't want our guys to die. This is why they need to be trained."

He added: "They will give advice and say something. They are very satisfied with our warriors. They say that they are very well-trained people and, most importantly, they want to learn."

Lukashenko may also be signaling his intent to use Wagner in the creation of some sort of a Belarusian "contract army," which, according to Barros and a Tuesday update from the ISW, the Belarusian doesn't have.

But while this may be of great interest to decision-makers in Belarus, these developments likely aren't a priority for Moscow.

"They're prioritizing defeating the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the south," Barros told Insider, adding that Russian forces are focused on "reconstituting their forces, preparing for the next subsequent fighting season over the winter, and potentially regrouping for another offensive."

It's unclear exactly how many Wagner fighters are operating in Belarus, but their presence has rattled some in the West, including the neighboring countries Poland and Lithuania. Officials in the two NATO countries expressed concerns after Poland said that over 100 Wagner mercenaries had moved into position near its border with Belarus and that two Belarusian military helicopters had violated its airspace, which Minsk denied.

A White House National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, downplayed the concern, saying there's no indication the mercenaries are an immediate threat to NATO.

"We're not aware of any specific threat posed by Wagner to Poland or to any of our NATO allies, and we're watching that, obviously, closely," Kirby told reporters on Tuesday, adding that the US is still committed to "defending every inch of NATO territory."

Poole Harbour experience inc Powerboat Level 2 – on our boats - General

Powerboat Courses

The RYA Level Two course is our most popular course and the two days over which it is run gives plenty of time for both practical instruction and theory. Whilst at first glance the syllabus appears very similar to the level one course the extra time available makes a real difference to the depth in which subjects are covered and therefore the amount a student can learn.

Prior experience

No prior boating experience is necessary. The course equally suits those new to boating and those who have been boating for years. Most people take Level 2 and bypass Level 1. You do not need to already have Level 1 before you take Level 2.

Course Duration

2 days from 9am to 5pm.

Instructor – student ratio

3 students to 1 Instructor and boat. We often run 2-3 boats per course the benefit being you get to use different boats and benefit from the interaction with other students. You often will find that you learn as much from watching another student execute a manoeuvre as you do from doing it yourself.

Minimum Age

We are generally happy for a child over 12 to attend a course with their parent/guardian on our boats at any time – please call to discuss. Children over 16 can attend a normal course at any time but we must have the parent/guardian’s specific permission – please call to discuss. If you want a child of under 16 to attend on their own then they must attend one of our dedicated Children’s Courses see the Children’s Courses section.

Why choose Powerboat Training UK for your Powerboat Level 2 course?

Our location and teaching facilities ~ Poole Harbour is a truly amazing teaching location – so much so that the RNLI and the Royal Marines base their training operations here. Our classrooms are well resourced, professional, clean and tidy.

Likewise our base in Lymington at Aquasafe Powerboat School is at Lymington Yacht Haven which like Cobbs Quay is a large marina with a huge range of craft. Our classrooms are well resourced, clean and professional.

Our Instructors ~ we ensure that our instructors are teaching 100% ‘Best Practice’ and have a process whereby we constantly review their sessions to ensure that you get the most productive experience from your time with us. All teach because they love boating and we work with them to constantly ‘upskill’ their qualifications and experience.

Our history ~ we started the school over ten years ago and have grown a reputation for delivering on our promises. Our clients range from individuals with their own craft to organisations such as Sunseeker, the RNLI and we were awarded the RYA Training contract by Dorset Police for the London 2012 Olympic events in Weymouth.

Ooops – almost forgot!. Included in the course price  you also get the RYA Start Powerboating book and can purchase a copy of the new updated RYA Powerboat Handbook for the reduced price of £15.

Does the course price represent good value? ~ remember in life you pretty much get what you pay for. We don’t pretend to be the cheapest but the course will be on well maintained first rate craft, and run by instructors guaranteed to teach current best practice. We have great facilities in a large marina offering a great all-round experience. Check out the other relevant pages on this website to see what we mean.

Some of the offers available when buying this course include…..

Special Offer No1!! Book and pay for your VHF Course at the same time as you book the Level 2 course and only pay £75 for the classroom based VHF course (including course pack). (Usual cost is £100, you also need to pay the RYA Fee which is £60). Alternatively you can choose the Online version of the VHF course for £65 – you will still need to come in for the assessment. We run VHF Courses every two weeks so fitting you in will never be an issue – we run these courses in Poole and Lymington.

Special Offer No2!! We also offer the opportunity to book the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course for a massively discounted £80 when booked alongside a Powerboat Level 2 course. This is a great course to develop your understanding of charts, tides, buoyage and navigation onto the next level after the course.

Poole Harbour experience inc Powerboat Level 2 – on our boats - The Course

The RYA Powerboat level 2 course is aimed both at those new to boating and those that have boated a while that want to improve their boat handling.

Your instructor will cover the following topics with you during your time with him/her:

  • Boat Handling including in confined spaces.
  • Approaching and securing to a buoy
  • Leaving and coming alongside
  • Handling a boat at planing speed
  • Man overboard
  • Launching & recovery
  • Navigation to include charts, tides, buoyage
  • Undertaking a passage
  • The ‘Collision regulations’

The vast majority of the time on this course is spent on the water and out of the classroom.

The time that you do spend in on theory will cover: The types of craft and their respective advantages/disadvantages; engines & drives; use of power tilt & trim tabs; safety checks; personal buoyancy; awareness of other water users; application of the collision regulations (IRPCS); local bylaws; towing and being towed; communication with other craft; emergency action; distress signals; fire precautions and fire fighting and rope work.

On the second day of the course we spend time looking at charts, tides, buoyage and using a compass. Using these skills we then prepare a short pilotage plan and execute it to put into practice the skills developed it in the classroom.

Essentially day one of the course is aimed at developing your ability to competently handle the craft in close quarter situations whilst day two develops the ability to navigate and then puts this into practice ensuring you have the ability to undertake short inshore passages.

Once you have reached the standard at which we can award the Level 2 certificate should you wish you can go on to apply for your ICC from the RYA. The relevant form can be downloaded ( here ) which coupled with a photo and a copy of your certificate will get you your licence. If you are a member of the RYA then your ICC is free else it costs approximately £45. Coincidently joining the RYA costs about the same so we would generally advise that you join then get the ICC free. If you intend travelling abroad shortly after your course and thus require your ICC to be issued quickly we advise that you join the RYA a few weeks before your course and then call the relevant department to try to ensure a quick turnaround for your application my own only took a week.

In certain situations the Level 2 certificate can be attained without attending the full course. This is known as Direct Assessment and takes half a day. (Call us if you feel that your experience is suitable and you are interested in this way of obtaining Level 2).

A further consideration when attending a level two course is where you take it. Coastal based schools award certificates with a Coastal Endorsement. This means that the student has learnt in conditions where tides and currents must be considered. Generally speaking if you intend using your boat in coastal waters ensure that you undertake a course with a coastal school.

Poole Harbour experience inc Powerboat Level 2 – on our boats - This course is aimed at

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course course appeals to a wide variety of individuals from those new to powerboating to those who may have boated for many years.

Some examples of the sorts of people that the Level 2 course is best suited to:

  • Those new to boating keen to ensure that as they start boating they are doing it right. The course focuses on ensuring that you develop a really good base understanding of boat handling, navigation and seamanship. After the course you can then bolt on more practical experience to really cement the knowledge gained on the course.
  • Those keen to boat overseas and want to achieve their International Certificate of Competence (‘ICC’) undertake the Level 2 course which then allows them to apply for the ICC using a copy of their Level 2 certificate.
  • Those who have boated a while but never received any formal training. Level 2 ensures that you will carry on but doing it the ‘right way’ ensuring that you use the most efficient methods and with a good understanding of the ‘building blocks’ of boating. Many of the people falling into this camp tend to wonder before a course how much they will gain from the course as they have been boating so long yet after the course wonder why they never did it sooner. Indeed for some it really reinvigorates their boating leading them to seek out new places to go with a greater confidence.
  • For those thinking about buying a boat the course serves as a great way to become a more educated buyer. Our bases in Poole and Lymington are in large marinas so you will be able to see a huge number of craft during your time with us. Being around so many boats and able to discuss the pros and cons of the various styles with the Instructors really helps when it comes to assessing the huge number of craft out there to buy.

The course is relevant whether you have your own boat or don’t ever intend owning your own craft.

Poole Harbour experience inc Powerboat Level 2 – on our boats - Reviews

Whatever we may think of our courses what really counts is what others think, below are a selection of comments taken directly from the Feedback Forms that we ask are filled in at the end of each course.

I just want to say thank you so much for a great course for the boys last weekend. Even in the rain they loved it. Sammy is a great teacher and Viv organised everything perfectly. They have already been raving about it to their friends so you may be getting more bookings! Thanks so much.. Justin
Absolutely loved it. I genuinely can’t stress enough how great John was. My girlfriend and I have both now explained to our respective parents how lucky we were to have had him all to ourselves. An unbelievable weekend with a lifelong skill at the end of it, made even more special by the fun, informative and patient captain we had on boards. A million thank yous! Xander
PAUL was brilliant. Very calm and he gave reassuring instructions. You didn’t really feel you were learning and then you just realised you could control your boat. I would recommend this training to anyone getting into motor boats or even up sizing. It is well worth the time and money. Jim
I thoroughly enjoyed the course and feel encouraged to learn more starting with the online navigation course. Rupert
Paul was fantastic I would definitely use you again! Andy
We would just like to say thank you for the great service and care you and your team delivered to us during our 2 day Power Boat level 2 training. Thank you to Tony for explaining everything so well, keeping us safe and being so patient, he is a credit to Powerboat Training UK. When the time is right we will be back for more training in the near future as we have the power boat bug. Frank and Joanna
Just a quick e-mail to thank you for a great couple of days I had completing the level 2 course over the weekend. Having going from not knowing a thing about boating to knowing a whole lot more! As I am looking to buying my first boat I found the information given go a long way to vastly increase my confidence on the water. Please also would you pass on my sincere thanks to Robin, who was my instructor for the two days, I found his guidance and patience made me feel relaxed and at ease, and his knowledge of boaty things made learning fun! Looking forward to more training when i get my first boat. Mark
Thanks Viv, the level 2 course was brilliant and as I’m sure you already know, Robin made it, he is a great guy and is a huge asset to your operation. I don’t praise people who just do their job, but Robin went the extra mile, fantastic guy. George
Just wanted to let you know what an excellent 2 days I’ve just enjoyed at Lymington on the Powerboat Level 2 course with Philip! The course content and pace was just perfect and Philip presented it in a very knowledgeable and enjoyable way. It has certainly given me the best possible introduction to Powerboats. I’m already looking forward to the VHF course next Saturday! Also, wanted to thank you both for your patience and understanding in providing me with an alternative course following my personal issues. David
We completed our Powerboat level 2 course over the weekend and all 3 of us enjoyed ourselves immensely as well as learning a great deal. Would you please pass on our sincere thanks to both Paul and Phillip who were both excellent teachers and very patient with us whilst we struggled to learnt about something that was totally new to us. Their understanding & knowledge made the whole process a lot easier! Bernard
IT WAS BLOODY BRILLIANT! I can’t tell you how nice Robin is as a coach and person he made the whole thing so enjoyable and the knowledge we both walked away with has set us up perfectly. I can’t speak highly enough of Aquasafe and the whole set up. Elizabeth was dreading it but came away really happy and pleased she did it. I think Robin played a massive part in making Elizabeth feel safe and gave her confidence. Two great days of learning and I will be recommending to my friends and family. Thank you so so much and hope to see you soon when I get some time to book up the other courses. Joshua
On behalf of myself and everyone who attended the course over the last couple of days, I just wanted to say thank you very much. Everyone was impressed with the instruction and the course as a whole. Arron
Just to say thank you very much for Saturday, we both enjoyed it and got a lot out of the training. I am hoping we will have some opportunities to put it into practice over the next few weeks. Thanks for your help, I hope we can come back and do some more training before too long. Alison
Hello Viv. A quick note while I remember to say thank you for organizing the course for James and I. We enjoyed it very much and Alan was very professional and affable. I feel very confident now to take a boat out and also realize how little I knew and also how little I still know! Sammy is a very pleasant young man too. All Best Wishes. Mark
I completed my PB level 2 course over the weekend under Anthony. The course was great and very well delivered, so I offer strong complements to the company and to Anthony as an individual. Sam
Hello there. I just wanted to send a quick email to thank you for the Powerboat Level 2 course in Lymington last Thursday and Friday, that myself, my son Sonny and my father, Dave completed – even despite the hilariously horrendous weather on Friday! Our instructor, Philip, was absolutely brilliant with all three of us. Very professional, patient, knowledgeable, kind and great company; he pitched the course content brilliantly well for both the 12 year old level and the 71 year old level and everything in between! Please pass on my greatest thanks to Philip and looking forward to getting lots of practice in and doing some future courses with you. With warmest wishes Juliette
Hi Viv Just to let you know how fantastic we thought the training was and how useful it has proved to be. Olly was skippering our Boston Whaler on Saturday on his own and the engine cut out near Old Harry. He had to make an emergency call to the coastguard after doing all the the things he had been trained to do on the course. He didn’t panic, he carried out checks and eventually made it to Swanage where the coastguard met him and we got Sea Start to him. Between them they worked out what the problem was and he ended up racing Sea Start back to Studland 🙂 The incident is mentioned in the Echo today. He kept in touch with us by phone and we didn’t panic either because we knew he was confident and able to handle the situation. All the adults he came into contact with were really impressed with the way he handled himself and the boat. So – thank you – and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this course to anyone, whatever their age. Cheers, Julie x
“Hi Viv, just to say thanks for providing Paul for our course. He took us from complete novices to competent power boat handlers. He was also brilliant with our 15 year old son Lyall. So many thanks for the course.” Best wishes Mandy
“I would like to thank the team very much for a most enjoyable Level 2 Course. Paul, Dom and Nye created a great atmosphere in the classroom and on the boats and did a great job of getting everyone to work as a team. Questions were encouraged and no-one was made to feel out of place for asking – Paul came to my assistance when I couldn’t quite fathom how to get the lifejacket on and even managed to keep a straight face! Dom took our group of three for the practical sessions and really made the course come alive. His enthusiasm for powerboats clearly rubbed off and I have now decided to get a RIB! Our group didn’t have a lot of experience with handling boats before and Dom was great at seeing where we were going wrong and adjusting the pace to suit our needs. I would definitely recommend Powerboat Training UK to anyone considering getting on the water, even with little or no experience. I look forward to taking my Intermediate Course at some point in the future after I’ve practiced what I’ve learnt a bit more.” Martin
“Just wanted to write to thank you for a great course at the weekend. Alyn was incredibly patient and responded to our million and one questions with enthusiasm every time. Before buying a boat I had never realised that there were so many things to think about and now a few days on I really struggle to see how we would have managed to boat safely without doing the course.” Joe & Ann (and son Ben) after spending two days with Paul and their new 28ft Bayliner sportscruisier.
“Thanks for taking the extra time with us at weekend to help us ensure we could do the launch and recovery part of boating during our Level 2 course. It was really helpful to do it a couple of times during the weekend and if you are okay with it we will take you up on your offer of assistance the next time we come down to launch.” Jon after spending a couple of days undertaking Level 2 with his 7m RIB where we dedicated specific time to practicing launch and recovery with his vehicle/trailer/boat to ensure it was handled safely and he was happy with the process.
“I enjoyed all aspects of both theory and practical work, there was lots of time on the water giving me plenty of the time at the helm. Good student to Instructor ratio.” Stephen commenting on his Level 2 course.
“I enjoyed all aspects of the course, a great friendly Instructor who covered everything in brilliant detail. I got plenty of practice at everything and he answered every question I had.” Mike commenting on his Level 2 course.
“Great instruction, clear concise theoretical work and good practical. Overall brilliant – great Instructors.” Charles commenting on his Level 2 course.
“Gave me confidence to go boating.” Mario commenting on his Level 2 course
