DESIGN DISCUSSIONS WITH SEAN MCMILLAN

Sitting down with Spirit Yachts founder and chief designer Sean McMillan, you are guaranteed to hear a great story or learn something new and interesting. Sean has dedicated his life to creativity and sailing, and Spirit Yachts is a merger of these two passions.

With Nigel Stuart (managing director) and Karen Underwood (operations director), taking care of the daily running of Spirit Yachts, Sean can be found at his drawing board either at the yard or in his studio at home. When he is not designing, Sean is busy planning Spirit’s legacy, the Spirit Academy of Yacht Construction and Technology.

Here, Sean shares early plans for the academy, what’s on his drawing board right now, future yacht design trends and where he looks to for inspiration.

Sean, what is on your drawing board at the moment?

I am designing a new 68ft Classic Spirit inspired by the customer’s existing Spirit 52. Having owned his 52 for many years, he is now looking for a larger, more practical yacht that retains the beauty of the long overhangs, low coachrooof and flush decks synonymous with the Classic Spirits.

Can you tell us about the different designs you have worked on recently?

Despite the challenging nature of this year, I have been very busy with both projects for existing Spirit owners and developing new concepts and ideas. The smallest design this year has been the new Spirit 30, now in build and looking very good. The largest has been a 125ft yawl which, whilst visually a pure classic Spirit, is also bristling with cutting edge technology in materials, power systems and energy resources.

Between these extremes have been my largest motoryacht design so far at 112ft, and new sailing yachts at 72ft, 50ft and 65ft, so I’ve been fully occupied!

Are you seeing any particular trends in the criteria coming from Spirit customers at the moment? Are there any trends you predict will come into play over the next few years?

A strong and ever-growing concern for the ecological impact of each yacht is becoming part of most briefs. Owners are becoming acutely aware of their responsibilities In that regard and quite rightly, owners expect us to be able to deliver in that field as well as building a beautiful, elegant and fast yacht.

We are anticipating that within probably five years we will never fit another pure diesel propulsion drive system. Given the advances already in use on the Spirit 44CR(e), the integrated solar panels, propellor regeneration and solar sails, as well as gains being made with hydrogen fuel cells, sailing yachts have the potential to become truly timeless. By the same token, the trend away from petrochemical and plastic products will radically affect the mainstream manufacturers over the next few years.

Who do you think are the great yachting designers of the last 100years?

What a difficult question! I would have to acknowledge the huge inspiration from Fife, Herreschoff and C.E.Nicholson, but I would particularly single out G.L.Watson from that era. Also from that time are lesser known, but equally talented designers such as Westmacott, H.G.May, Arthur Payne – the list is long and rich.

Nearer our own time, I have always greatly admired the work of Bruce King whose understanding of ‘the visual line’ is faultless.

Outside of yachting, is there anything that you follow or enjoy for creative inspiration?

Lots of things inspire me in a rather ‘grasshopper’ manner. I love looking at quirks in nature, which can be very inspirational in design. One of my designs owed a lot to the common woodlouse…

Tell us about the plans for the Spirit Academy of Yacht Construction and Technology.

With so many young people out there looking to learn a skill that will stay with them for life, and with the skills shortage in the marine industry still apparent, the academy is a natural project for us. For a long time, we have discussed the potential of a training facility located next door to the main Spirit Yachts yard.

The academy’s curriculum will be 80% practical, focusing on developing hand-crafted skills. It will keep sustainable working practices and materials at its core.

The course will concentrate on modern timber construction techniques, and we will draw on expertise from across the marine sector covering everything from rigging to sailmaking and electronics.

The plans are still in their infancy, but we are all keen to make it happen. We are working closely with local education providers and Associated British Ports (owners of Ipswich Haven Marina), and we hope to open to students in 2023.

If you were talking to an aspiring young designer, what advice would you give them?

Take what you can from academic teaching if that’s the way you choose to go, but realise that, regrettably, you are being taught yacht design as a science. Great designers have always treated it first and foremost as an art form with science applied later.

Draw by hand as much as you can and spend time hanging over the back of a yacht watching waterflow off a hull.

When he is not at work, or walking his dogs with wife Jenny, Sean can be found racing and cruising onboard his own Spirit 52 Flight of Ufford. “Flight” comes with much racing pedigree and has competed at classic regattas all over the world. Watch her in action on the water here .

Who Was on the Sunken Yacht? Tech Mogul Mike Lynch, His Family and Friends.

Mr. Lynch, the former chief executive of the software firm Autonomy, who was acquitted on fraud charges in June, was with friends and family when the yacht went down in a severe storm.

Mike Lynch, in a suit and carrying a leather briefcase, is walking toward a building.

By Michael J. de la Merced

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 passengers aboard, 15 were rescued, six bodies were recovered and one was still missing. Search operations at the site of the sunken yacht were continuing on Thursday.

Here’s what we know about the passengers.

Mike Lynch and his family

Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.

In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.

HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.

Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.

Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.

Hannah Lynch, Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was also on the yacht and was among those who were still missing.

The other guests

Among those unaccounted for is Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange. His wife, Judy Bloomer, 71, is also listed as missing.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation,” Morgan Stanley said in a statement.

Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, is also among those missing. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht and is also among those confirmed as missing.

“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.

Survivors include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their 1-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.

The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting, and Kitty Bennett and Susan Campbell Beachy contributed research.

Who are the victims of the Bayesian yacht sinking?

On Thursday, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to the PA news agency that the sixth and final person yet to be found is a woman.

The bodies of those found in the search for six people missing after the sinking of a luxury yacht during a storm off the coast of Sicily are being recovered from the wreckage.

Five bodies have now been brought to shore in the small fishing village of Porticello, around 11 miles from the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

Technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the Bayesian was hit by a storm and sank at around 5am on Monday.

Mike Lynch court case

The bodies of the missing men onboard the luxury yacht, as well as the boat’s chef, have now been recovered.

These are the details of each of the victims on board.

– Mike Lynch

British technology tycoon Mr Lynch founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, and made his name as one of Britain’s most influential entrepreneurs.

In June, the 59-year-old was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to an 11 billion dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

Mr Lynch was born in Ilford, east London, brought up in Essex and was the son of a nurse from Co Tipperary and a fireman from Co Cork who enjoyed childhood summers in Carrick-On-Shannon and Tipperary where he had family.

He went to Cambridge University and started his first business while studying for a PhD in signal processing and communications research.

He was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. That same year, he was appointed to the board of the BBC, and was later elected to then-prime minister David Cameron’s council for science and technology in 2011.

David Tabizel, Mr Lynch’s Autonomy co-founder, said: “The world has lost a genius. His family have lost a giant of a man.”

Mr Lynch was a member of the Create The Change fundraising board, set up by Cancer Research UK, which helped fund the building of the Francis Crick Institute.

Chairman Lord John Browne, who described him as “a human being of great ability”, said: “Mike Lynch should be remembered as the person who catalysed a breed of deep tech entrepreneurs in the UK.

“His ideas and his personal vision were a powerful contribution to science and technology in both Britain and globally.”

He became a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008, which paid tribute for his “active role” as a “mentor, donor and former council member”. He was an inaugural member of the enterprise committee.

On Thursday, the technology industry group TechUK also described him as “a hugely significant and pioneering figure in the UK technology sector”.

– Jonathan Bloomer

The Morgan Stanley International bank chairman is a prominent businessman who holds a number of boardroom roles after an extensive career in financial services.

He was the chief executive of global finance group Prudential between 2000 and 2005, and is chairman of Morgan Stanley International as well as Hiscox and property business SDL.

Mr Bloomer was among those to give evidence as a defence witness for Mr Lynch, and media reports suggest the pair are close friends.

– Chris Morvillo

Mr Morvillo, 59, a partner at law firm Clifford Chance, represented Mr Lynch during the long-running criminal fraud trial where he was eventually cleared of all charges.

His long career included representing corporate and individual clients in white-collar government investigations, related regulatory and civil proceedings, and internal investigations.

Mr Morvillo had previously been a federal prosecutor, working on cases related to the 9/11 attacks and securing the conviction of lawyer Lynne Stewart for assisting terrorism during his time as assistant US attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1999 and 2005.

A Clifford Chance spokesman said the firm was “in shock and deeply saddened” about the tragedy and its thoughts were with Mr Movillo’s relatives.

He added: “Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident.”

– Recaldo Thomas

The first body recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday was that of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the Bayesian superyacht, the Italian coastguard told Sky News.

In a tribute shared on Tuesday, Gareth Williams, a friend of Mr Thomas, told the BBC: “I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.”

Mr Thomas grew up in Antigua and spent his time there during the off-season, Mr Williams said.

Another friend, Eli Fuller, told the outlet Mr Thomas was “friends with everybody”, “always positive” and “sought after” in his profession.

British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch considered selling his superyacht the Bayesian in the months leading up to the deadly trip to Sicily, it has been revealed.

The search for his 18-year-old daughter Hannah continues after Mr Lynch was identified on Thursday as one of the five bodies recovered from the wreckage near the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

The Italian coastguard also confirmed that the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer , his wife Judith Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were all recovered after being discovered on the vessel the previous day.

However, divers and underwater vehicles are continuing to scour the scene for a fourth day as Mr Lynch’s youngest daughter remains unaccounted for after the 56-metre vessel sank in a severe storm in the early hours of Monday.

It comes as industry sources told The Telegraph Mr Lynch put the £30 million sailboat up for sale in March but later changed his mind after he was acquitted of fraud. He reportedly withdrew it from the market four months later and was going to review the decision in autumn after enjoying the summer on board.

The boat’s chef Recaldo Thomas was confirmed dead on Monday, while a further 15 people survived the disaster.

What we know about Mike Lynch yacht tragedy amid claims of human error

The ceo of the italian sea group claims a chain of mistakes led to the tragedy as the hunt for the final missing passenger continues..

The head of the company behind the Bayesian superyacht that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday has blamed the vessel’s sinking on a “very long list of errors”.

The British-flagged vessel was carrying 22 people – 12 passengers and 10 crew – when it was hit by a heavy storm that created waterspouts – rotating columns of wind over a body of water. One of those on board was British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, 59, whose body was reportedly recovered on Thursday.

It is still not known exactly why the yacht sunk but Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini Navi - the company who built the Bayesian - blamed a series of human errors.

He told Italian media its sinking was due to a chain of human errors given that the storm was expected. Had the crew shut all doors and hatches, turned on the engine, lifted the anchor, lowered the keel and turned the yacht to face the wind, they would have suffered "zero damage", the CEO said, adding that the incoming storm should not have been ignored.

Searches are still ongoing to find a sixth person who is missing and presumed dead. The Reuters news agency reported that the fifth body recovered on Thursday morning is Lynch, citing a source close to the rescue operation. Lynch’s 18-year daughter Hannah is still missing, the source said.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday than Hannah Lynch's body was among those found. However, authorities have not officially confirmed any of the identities.

The whereabouts of the missing sixth person remains unknown.

Previously, only one body had been recovered, that of Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the 56m boat, which sank near Palermo in the early hours of Monday.

Morgan Stanley International Bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his charity trustee wife Judy are also among the missing, as is Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife, Neda, a jewellery designer.

What happened to the Bayesian?

The British-flagged vessel was carrying 22 people – 12 passengers and 10 crew – when it was hit by a heavy storm that created waterspouts – rotating columns of wind over a body of water that are often likened to tornadoes.

It was anchored to the seabed near the harbour of the small fishing village of Porticello, to the east of Palermo, when the storm struck and caused the boat to sink at around 5am local time.

Karsten Borner, skipper of a boat that had been moored alongside the Bayesian, said the yacht flipped on its side soon after the storm hit and sank within two minutes.

However, citing data from the yacht's automatic tracking system and based on available footage, Costantino said it took 16 minutes from when the wind began buffeting the yacht, and it began taking on water, for it to sink.

Who was on board?

Missing or confirmed dead.

Mike and Hannah Lynch

Once described as "Britain's Bill Gates", the 59-year-old technology tycoon, born in Ilford, Essex, to Irish parents, founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, later selling it to US company Hewlett Packard for £8.6bn in 2011. He went on trial this year in San Francisco over a fraud charges related to the sale, but was found not guilty on all counts. His 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, is also missing.

Following the news of his death, technology industry group TechUK paid tribute to Lynch. A spokesperson said: “Mike Lynch was a hugely significant and pioneering figure in the UK technology sector.

“Our hearts go out to all of the families and friends who have been impacted by these tragic events.”

Jonathan and Judy Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chairman of Morgan Stanley Bank International and insurance company Hiscox, was also on board along with his wife, Judy, who was called a "brilliant champion for women's health" by gynaecological cancer research charity the Eve Appeal, where she has been a trustee for more than 20 years. Jonathan Bloomer was made chairman of Morgan Stanley International in 2018, and last year was named chairman of the Hiscox international insurance group.

Chris and Neda Morvillo

A US partner at law firm Clifford Chance, Morvillo worked on the case that saw Lynch cleared of fraud. He was on board the yacht with his wife, Neda, an American jewellery designer.

Recaldo Thomas

The body of the Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the ship was recovered on Monday. Gareth Williams, a friend of 30 years who grew up with Thomas, told the BBC: "I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit."

The Survivors

Angela bacares.

The 57-year-old wife of Lynch was said to be left in a "state of shock and sadness" and recovering in a wheelchair after injuries she sustained walking on broken glass while escaping the yacht.

Charlotte Golunski

Briton Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Invoke Capital, founded by Lynch, was with her husband James Emsley and their one-year-old daughter, Sofia, whose life she saved.

Golunski said they survived because they were on deck when the yacht started to sink.

She told La Repubblica: "For two seconds I lost my daughter in the sea then quickly hugged her amid the fury of the waves. I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning."

Ayla Ronald

A senior associate at law firm Clifford Chance, New Zealand lawyer Ronald, 36, worked on Lynch's acquittal. Clifford Chance confirmed the day after the accident that Ronald and her partner Matthew Fletcher had been rescued from the superyacht.

James Cutfield

The captain of the Bayesian - James Cutfield, 51, from New Zealand - told an Italian newspaper in the aftermath of the storm: “We didn’t see it coming.”

The captain’s brother, Mark Cutfield, told MailOnline that he was a “very good sailor” and that his injuries were not “too dramatic”.

Other survivors

A number of people thought to have been rescued have been named, including Sasha Murray, 29, from Ireland; Myin Htun Kyaw, 39, who has a Burmese passport, and Matthew Griffith. Other survivors include Leo Eppel and South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken, who worked as crew members on the Bayesian and were named by the Italian coastguard.

Bayesian search latest

Divers are tag-teaming in 10-minute underwater shifts to search the vessel, with the rotating search teams only able to stay below for that long because it sank to a depth of 50m - requiring special precautions.

A team from the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is at the scene to make a basic assessment. The MAIB is looking into what happened because the yacht was flying a British flag, it is understood. The Italian Coastguard said the MAIB is not involved in the search for the missing people, and that it has not been requested to assist.

Inspections of the yacht’s internal hull took place on Wednesday morning.

Fire crews from the Vigili del Fuoco said they have been accessing the vessel through natural entrances, without making openings.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles are being used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search, the Italian Coastguard has said.

A decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is “not on the agenda” but “will be”, Zagarola told the PA news agency.

He said: “This is not a topic on the agenda. It will be, but not now.”

He also said that the Italian Coastguard’s working theory is still that the missing woman is inside the boat.

What we don't know

While it is thought the yacht encountered bad weather, the exact nature of the incident hasn't been confirmed.

A number of theories have been put forward by a range of experts, including that the vessel's 72m-long mast snapped or was broken in the freak storm.

Karsten Borner, the captain of another yacht anchored nearby at the time of the storm, claims he saw the Bayesian’s mast “bend and then snap”. However, Andrea Ratti, a nautical design professor at Milan Polytechnic university, said an unusually tall mast is not by itself an element of vulnerability in a storm.

It is thought the vessel was hit by a waterspout, a rotating column of wind that forms over a body of water and is often likened to a tornado, which some experts believe could have been caused by global warming. Luca Mercalli, president of Italy's meteorological society, said the sea surface temperature around Sicily in the days leading up to Bayesian’s sinking was about 30C - almost 3C more than normal. He told Reuters: “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

Another theory is that the vessel filled with water because of hatches or windows being left open as a result of the high temperatures.

Sailing expert Sam Jefferson, editor of magazine Sailing Today, said: “I would have said that the boat got hit very hard by the wind, it was pinned over on its side. I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that."

Mercalli suggested to The Telegraph that given that authorities had issued a "yellow" weather alert, followed by a "moderate" alert, the ship's crew could have been more vigilant.

Mike Lynch was a "remarkable" man who lost 12 years of his life to a "pointless legal argument", his friend and business partner has said.

In a new interview with Sky News, David Tabizel, who co-founded Autonomy with Mr Lynch, said the tycoon had an "inner child", loved video games and had a life-sized train set in his garden.

"He had a remarkable set of personality traits which we rarely see in Britain," he added, saying Mr Lynch's "lower-middle class background" contributed to his "hunger and ambition".

"He was very, very, very focused on the truth, which is why it was so difficult and so strange seeing what happened to him the last 12 years," Mr Tabizel said.

Mr Tabizel said the lengthy legal case against Mr Lynch - which started when Hewlett-Packard accused him of fraud by overstating the value of Autonomy when he sold it to them in 2011 - reminded him of "the Post Office scandal" but against one man.

"I never heard him lie. I never heard him exaggerate. He was interested in truth," he said.

"To me, it reminds me of the Post Office scandal. But this time against one man... with a brain the size of a planet and hundreds of millions of pounds in the bank."

Mr Tabizel said his friend's death was "such a loss" for his family.

"We should be celebrating his legacy, and to lose the last 12 years of this wonderful man's life for a pointless legal argument, which comes down to nothing more than greed - it's crazy," he said.

Paying tribute to Mr Lynch, Mr Tabizel said: "I love that man. And and he should be celebrated as a hero."

The family of Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy, have released a statement after the couple were confirmed to have died in the yacht disaster.

The statement reads: "We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the emergency services and everyone who helped tirelessly in this rescue operation.

"Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

"Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.

"This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder. Our only ask is that our family's privacy is respected at this time."

BBC director-general Tim Davie says the corporation is "deeply saddened by the awful news" that at least six people have died in the yacht disaster.

"Mike Lynch was an outstanding BBC director who made a major contribution during his time on the board, from 2007 to 2012," he said in a statement.

"Wise, generous and insightful, he played a particularly key role in accelerating our transformation as a digital organisation.

"Our thoughts are with his family and all others involved."

Questions have been raised about whether the sunken yacht will be salvaged in the investigation into the incident.

Earlier, the Italian coastguard said a decision on whether to raise the vessel from the seabed was "not a topic on the agenda" at the moment - but "will be" in the future.

Nick Barke, head of salvage operations at Boats.co.uk, a boat sales and services company, said the "only real way of knowing" why the yacht sank would be to lift it to the surface.

However, he acknowledged this would be an "expensive and complicated process".

On what that process would be, Mr Barke said divers would attach straps to the boat before hauling it upright and bringing it out of the water.

A neighbour of Mike Lynch has paid tribute to him and his family following the confirmation of the tech tycoon's death today.

Ruth Leigh said despite Mr Lynch and his wife Angela being "wealthy, influential people" they "never put any airs or graces on" in the 15 years she knew them.

Mrs Leigh described how Mr Lynch was a valued member of their village community and would give a Remembrance Day reading at the local church every year.

"From the start they were fantastic neighbours, very friendly," she told Sky News.

"In this very small, rural community, everybody knows everybody, and Mike from the very start made a point of getting to know everybody.

"He maintained fences, extended the estate, looked after the menagerie, and really invested in the place.

"One of the first things we noticed about Mike and Angela was that even though they are wealthy, influential people, they never put any airs or graces on.

"They'd always take the trouble to remember your name and ask after your partner or children. They didn't have to do that. We had a great deal of respect for them."

She added: "They touched a lot of people. They were well thought of, kind, generous, hospitable people."

With the search for Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch still ongoing, Mrs Leigh said she can't imagine what Mrs Lynch and her other daughter, 21-year-old Esme, are going through.

"Angela is alive, which is wonderful, and Esme wasn't on the boat, I don't think," she added.

"But to hear that, our own child has turned 18 and just got their A-level results, words fail me, what Angela must be going through. I can't articulate what that must be like."

The chief executive of Cancer Research UK has added to the tributes paid to Mike Lynch after confirmation of his death today.

Michelle Mitchell said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mike Lynch and all those who have been affected by this tragedy.

"Together with his wife, Angela, Mike was a valued donor to Cancer Research UK and a member of the board for our Create the Change campaign, which funded the building of the Francis Crick Institute.

"His support has helped to bring leading scientists together under one roof to tackle the biggest health challenges faced by humankind, including cancer.

"Our sincerest condolences go out to all the families affected."

Mike Lynch's daughter Hannah Lynch remains missing after the sinking of the yacht off the Sicily coast, an Italian government official has said.

Rescue workers have been searching for six people who were unaccounted for after the disaster on Monday.

Five bodies have been brought to shore and identified in the past day - among them Mr Lynch.

However his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, has not yet been found, Massimo Mariani, an interior ministry official, has said.

He said she may be inside the wreck or could have been thrown into the sea as the boat sank.

A friend and former business partner of Mike Lynch has described him as "witty, loyal" and a "glorious professional companion".

In a fresh tribute, David Tabizel, who co-founded Autonomy with Mr Lynch, said: "RIP my friend Mike Lynch. He was exhausting, exhilarating and incisive.

"A witty, loyal polymath with a mind like a razor blade. A glorious professional companion and true friend. Britain's Bill Gates? Not really. Britain's Steve Jobs. The father of modern AI."

Mr Tabizel said that if he had survived, Mr Lynch would have gone on to achieve "even greater things".

He called him the "rarest of entrepreneurs" who had "big ideas constantly".

It's "probable" that Hannah Lynch will be found somewhere inside the Bayesian, a senior oceanography lecturer has told Sky News.

Divers are still searching for the teenager, who is the final passenger from the yacht still unaccounted for.

There are working theories that her body might not be inside the yacht, though Simon Boxall, a senior lecturer in oceanography at the University of Southampton, says this is unlikely.

"It's probable she is somewhere in the boat," Mr Boxall told Sky News.

"Sadly, I think this is a recovery rather than a rescue mission.

"Now there is a faint chance that she was thrown from the boat and is in the water. But there's been an incredibly intensive search for people, for bodies, after the incident, and it's unlikely.

"The most likely thing is that she will be found eventually within the boat as they work their way through."

Asked about the timeframe in which the Bayesian could be raised from the seabed, Mr Boxall said this would need to happen during a "calm weather window", likely later in autumn.

Tech tycoon, defence attorney, and Morgan Stanley banker among those missing in freak yacht sinking

A superyacht that sank Monday off the Sicilian coast during a storm left at least six people dead and one passenger missing. Among that list is British tech kingpin Mike Lynch and some of his inner circle, who were gathered to celebrate his victory in a long-running legal trial.

Lynch was acquitted in June in a U.S. fraud case and was apparently aboard the Bayesian with some of the people who stood by him throughout the ordeal. Another member of Lynch's legal team who wasn't aboard, Reid Weingarten, said the outing was intended in part as a celebration of the acquittal.

Here's a look at the people who are dead or missing, as well as details on the recent death of an associate of Lynch who was not on the yacht.

Software entrepreneur Mike Lynch, along with his daughter, Hannah, are among those that police divers are searching for after the yacht was struck by a waterspout off of Porticello, near Palermo.

A spokesperson for Lynch said there were no updates Tuesday.

Lynch had been trying to move past a Silicon Valley debacle that had tarnished his legacy as an icon of British ingenuity.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his mark with Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. Autonomy’s steady growth in its first decade resulted in Lynch being dubbed Britain’s Bill Gates and earning him one of the U.K’s highest honors, the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006.

Lynch, 59, sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale.

The fraud allegations resulting in Lynch being fired by HP’s then-CEO Meg Whitman and a decade-long legal battle. It culminated with him being extradited from the U.K. to face criminal charges of masterminding a multibillion-dollar fraud.

Lynch steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP’s own bungling — a position he maintained while testifying before a jury during a 2 1/2 month trial in San Francisco earlier this year. U.S. Justice Department prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses in an attempt to prove their allegations against Lynch.

Lynch was vindicated at trial in June after being cleared of all charges. Lynch pledged to return to the U.K. and explore new ways to innovate.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil cased in London that HP mostly won in 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

Lynch later went on to set up technology investment firm Invoke Capital.

Christopher Morvillo

One of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of the firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda were also on the yacht and are among those unaccounted for.

Morvillo is regarded as an elite defense attorney specializing in fraud and corruption cases. He was previously a federal prosecutor in New York who worked on the criminal investigation of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. His father, Robert Morvillo, was also a lawyer who represented high-profile clients, including Martha Stewart.

In a LinkedIn post soon after Lynch's acquittal, Morvillo paid tribute to the team of lawyers who worked on the case and also his wife and two daughters.

“None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home,” he wrote. The post ended with the words: “And they all lived happily ever after….”

In a legal podcast released last week, Morvillo recounted his involvement with Lynch's case, starting from when his firm was hired in November 2012.

He flew to London to meet Lynch on Thanksgiving weekend that year and assumed he would be gone for a week, Morvillo told the For the Defense podcast. Instead, Morvillo said he “spent a significant portion of the rest of my life bouncing back and forth between London and New York.”

The case has “covered one third of my career,” he said. “It has been a constant presence in my life for the last 12 years.”

Clifford Chance said it was “in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident” and that its thoughts are with Morvillo and his wife. “Our utmost priority is providing support to the family,” the firm said.

Jonathan Bloomer

The chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife, Judy, were also among the yacht's missing.

Bloomer is non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International, which covers markets outside the U.S., and the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London insurance marketplace.

Lynch appointed Bloomer to Autonomy’s board of directors in 2010, where he served as chairman of the audit committee at the time of the HP deal. Bloomer testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.

Both Morgan Stanley and Hiscox said they were “deeply shocked and saddened" by the tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation," the bank said.

Aki Hussain, the group chief executive of Hiscox, said "our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

Stephen Chamberlain

In a strange coincidence, another former Autonomy executive who was acquitted alongside Lynch of the fraud charges died days before the sinking of the Bayesian.

Stephen Chamberlain “was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running,” his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in a statement.

Chamberlain, formerly a vice-president of finance at the company, was accused of artificially inflating Autonomy’s revenues and making false and misleading statements to auditors, analysts and regulators.

He stood trial with Lynch, and was also found not guilty.

“He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity. We deeply miss him," Lincenberg said. “Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family.”

Chamberlain “was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend," his family said in statement released through Cambridgeshire Police. “He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible."

Police said the driver, a 49-year-old woman, remained at the scene in the village of Stretham, England, and was assisting with the investigation.

Recaldo Thomas

The chef with Antiguan roots was the first confirmed death from the accident. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of his last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told The Associated Press.

Thomas was born in Canada but he would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s.

“He was a free spirit,” Isaac recalled. “Nothing rattled him. I’ve never seen him upset.”

Upon moving to Antigua, Thomas, best known as “Rick,” started working as a bartender in Jolly Harbor so he could be close to the sea, his second love after cooking, Isaac said.

Thomas also picked up jobs on small boats and eventually went to culinary school and started working on bigger ships.

  • Read more of the latest international headlines

Isaac recalled how Thomas would be gone for several months at a time and then unexpectedly show up in Antigua between jobs.

“This particular incident was hard,” Isaac said. “He was just ready to tie up the end of his journey in his career."

Isaac recalled Thomas’ “big, infectious” laugh and said he found some solace in that “Rick did exactly what he was meant to do and what he loved doing.”

AP writers Eric Tucker in Washington and Anika Kentish in St. John's, Antigua, contributed to this report.

On board the award-winning Spirit 111 flagship sailing yacht Geist

BOAT International steps on board Geist , the flagship of British shipyard Spirit Yachts that combines classic beauty and green technology with beguiling grace...

When Spirit Yachts’ flagship grew from 27 to 34 metres overall before she had even left the drawing board, she was already destined for the record books. At this size she would be the largest wooden sloop-rigged yacht to be built in the UK since the famous J Class yacht Shamrock V back in 1930. Given her long, elegant lines and low freeboard, so typical of the J Class , it was an interesting comparison from the off. And there was more to come.

The decision to head from Spirit Yachts’ yard in Ipswich on the east coast of the UK to Gosport in the south for the sea trials, was intended to make it easier to get into open water. But it was also a move that provided another connection with Sir Thomas Lipton’s famous America’s Cup challenger. The Gosport base for the Spirit 111’s sea trials was the famous Camper & Nicholsons yard (now Endeavour Quay), where Shamrock and the three other British J Class yachts had been built in the 1930s.

Unlike the competitive Js, the Spirit 111, named Geist , has been designed for a more relaxed life – a cruiser with the ability to take part in the occasional regatta. And while she’s been built in a traditional material, her wood epoxy composite construction on a steel space frame takes advantage of the very latest materials and techniques.

From her carbon mast with its non-metallic rigging, to her advanced sail- handling systems, her classic looks conceal a very advanced technical specification. For example, a bank of four BMW lithium batteries and a 100kW Torqeedo propulsion system capable of regenerating power once under way lie at the heart of her operational hardware.

Another significant difference is in the intended make-up of her crew. Here, the biggest clue as to how she has been designed to be operated can be found in her layout below decks.  Aside from being beautiful, it offers an owner’s cabin and three guest doubles – far fewer than you might expect of a boat this size. Furthermore, there is no skipper or crew accommodation: this is clearly an owner/driver superyacht.

Wherever you look, the Spirit 111 is a fascinating boat and when you talk to her creators, (“builders” seems so inappropriate for something so artful and innovative) it becomes clear that the project was a voyage of discovery for them at times too.

“In the early stages we built a model and presented it to the owner who said, ‘No, it looks a bit dumpy. Can’t we pull out the bow and stern?’” explains Spirit Yachts’ managing director Nigel Stuart.

“So the boat grew, but not the freeboard – but this was just the start. As you’d expect in the accommodation, the Sipo mahogany walls were drawn to sit vertically but they ended up raked, sweeping around the accommodation with a crease. There are no door handles and American walnut was used around corners in ways you simply wouldn’t expect and many believed couldn’t be done. The saloon table has 64 individually made legs, while the seating that wraps around it took a dedicated team 2,000 working hours to build. ‘Organic’ was a word that was used endlessly throughout the project.”

Designed by Rhoades Young and Spirit Yachts, her interior is extraordinary. “The client had recently visited Antelope Canyon in Arizona and this was the catalyst for the idea of the warm, soft flowing walls creating unique focal points within the room,” says Rhoades Young partner Jonathan Rhoades. Based on a set of linked circles which sweep around in an S-shape, the bulk of the accommodation is set amidships. The saloon, galley and navigation area is one open, circular area, lit from overhead by Spirit’s trademark fan windows in the deck.

From cooker to chart plotter, every item of equipment can be hidden behind slick fitted panels where the grain provides seamless continuity. Combined with vellum panels and an ingenious lighting system that not only switches on and off automatically but also balances itself against the ambient light, the overall appearance is striking.

Devoid of any decoration or soft furnishings, it looks a little stark at first, but this is an interior to savour. Like walking into a gallery at the Tate Modern, when you stop and look you start to get drawn into the light, the lines and the subtle range of colours that sweep through her interior. It’s an intoxicating experience.

It’s difficult to do the accommodation justice in a few words, other than to say that it has to be one of the most extraordinary yacht interiors I’ve ever seen. From the minute the electric motor propels you silently from the dock, through the effortless hoisting of the in-boom furling mainsail and the roller furling headsail, it is clear how much distance there is between the 111 and a J Class. The classic yachts of the 1930s require well in excess of 20 crew to race them – we cruise around the Solent with just five on board, and really only three are necessary to handle the boat.

On the helm she’s a very different boat to a J. She’s amazingly light, direct and beautifully balanced, steering herself upwind with ease. In 12 knots of true breeze we slice uphill at nine knots. Downwind she’s just as silky smooth and while she’s clearly a very large yacht, she’s also a proper sailing boat with all the feel you’d expect of something a third of her size.

I’m privileged to have taken the helm of both Shamrock V and Endeavour and while these were both very special moments, the fact remains that Geist has a much better feel on the wheel. And so she should.

Her fin and bulb keel along with the carbon spade rudder contrast starkly with the less- efficient rudder that was hung off the trailing edge of the keel on a J Class. At 65 tonnes fully laden she’s also less than half the weight of a J Class. While neither of these characteristics are that easy to see, they are good examples of 80 years of progress.

So, while the Spirit 111 was never envisaged as a modern-day J Class or engaging in the type of sailing that the Js became famous for, she does represent a similar approach: using modern materials and techniques to push the boundaries of design and technology, while at the same time delivering elegance that will turn heads, whatever the era.

The wood works

As a boat that glorifies wood – from her hull to her interior design – it was vital that the Spirit 111’s timber was ethically sourced to fit the yacht’s green ethos. For Douglas fir the yard went to Canada, which it knew had robust regulations. “Those forests have been commercially managed for over 100 years,” says Spirit Yachts’ managing director Nigel Stuart. “They plant two trees for one [felled] and they only harvest one per cent of the timber in Canada a year.”

Taking it a step further, the father of the yard’s timber dealer went to the forest to record “exactly where those trees were felled”. Sipo wood was sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-run forests in West Africa and the teak was also responsibly sourced – although since the project began four years ago, the yard’s view on teak in general has changed.

“There have been certain cases highlighted [within yachting] where teak was bought with the best intentions, but was later found to have actually come from Burma – with all the implications that entails. So that’s why we said that we can’t trust the paperwork.” Instead, the yard now uses Lignia, an alternative from sustainably managed softwood plantations, treated to provide a durable timber that looks and feels just like teak.

But the careful sourcing of wood was only a fraction of the work. The timber is machined into planks before being air-dried for months (a low-energy method). At the yard it is sliced into the required thickness, mostly six millimetres for the interior, revealing the grain’s beautiful flames. “Then we store it on site to let it settle for two or three months,” says Stuart. “It has a tendency to relax when we treat it like this.”

Then the joiners get to work, using only hand tools. “I think we’ve probably got the finest joinery team in the world,” says Stuart. To give an idea of the skill required for this extraordinary interior, he points to the grain on a bathroom wall. It runs all the way from the ceiling, down the wall, undulating over the sink, and down to the floor – perpendicular all the way. This was installed in three separate sections with the grains perfectly matched. That means hundreds of pieces of wood, each referring to each other. Mess up one of the three sections and you start again from scratch.

So fine was the work, they spent eight months making eight doors with flared handholds. They even invented a new method of steam bending walnut wood, which is particularly rigid. The result, however, is one of the most impressive examples of woodwork afloat.

Bayesian yacht sinking: Who are the people missing?

Five bodies have been found in the search for six people missing after the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily.

The island’s civil protection agency confirmed on Wednesday that four out of the five bodies have been recovered and a sixth person remains unaccounted for.

It comes after the body of a chef on the superyacht, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered on Monday.

The identities of the bodies found on Wednesday, and the remaining missing person, have not been confirmed but the group of six unaccounted for after the yacht sank are Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda.

Here, the PA news agency details what we know of those who were on board.

He was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. That same year, he was appointed to the board of the BBC, and was later elected to then-prime minister David Cameron’s council for science and technology in 2011.

David Tabizel, Mr Lynch’s Autonomy co-founder, told Sky News on Tuesday: “He has been one of the most influential, intelligent and most honourable human beings I have ever had the honour of knowing.”

Ruth Leigh, a neighbour of Mr Lynch from Pettistree in Suffolk, said on Tuesday: “Once a year he’d host a party on the lawn and we’d all go to it.

“He’s just a really nice person. I know that sounds a bit trite, but for a man in his position with every right he could have been quite lofty but he wasn’t, he got involved.

“He used to come and speak at the church in the village on Remembrance Sunday.

“He was a very charitable man, he gave a lot of his time and effort which was good. We just had an incredibly high opinion of him.”

– Hannah Lynch

The 18-year-old daughter of Mr Lynch had recently finished her A-levels and was due to study at Oxford University.

A spokesperson for Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, where Hannah was a former pupil, said on Tuesday: “We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.”

Aki Hussain, group chief executive of Hiscox, said in a statement on Tuesday: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

A spokesperson for Morgan Stanley said on Tuesday: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation.”

– Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer’s wife Judy is a respected psychotherapist.

– Chris Morvillo

Mr Morvillo, a partner at law firm Clifford Chance, represented Mr Lynch during the long-running criminal fraud trial where he was eventually cleared of all charges.

A spokeswoman for Clifford Chance said on Tuesday: “We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident.

“Our thoughts are with our partner, Christopher Morvillo, and his wife Neda who are among the missing.

“Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident.”

– Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo’s wife Neda reportedly runs a luxury jewellery line.

Five bodies found in Sicily yacht wreck

LAST UPDATE | 22 hrs ago

FIVE BODIES HAVE been found in the wreck of a luxury yacht that sank in a storm off the coast of Sicily.

Four bodies, which have yet to be identified, have been recovered and the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency Salvatore Cocina said efforts to bring a fifth to shore are “ongoing”.

It brings the confirmed death toll from the disaster off the Italian island to six, after the body of a man believed to be the yacht’s chef was recovered hours after the sinking on Monday.

Among those also missing are Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Inspections of the craft’s internal hull took place on Wednesday morning.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) have arrived in Porticello, where they are expected to look at the site of the sinking.

The MAIB is looking into what happened because the yacht Bayesian was flying a British flag, it is understood.

The Italian Coastguard said the MAIB is not involved in the search for the missing people and that it has not been requested to assist.

thomas spirit yacht

Jeremy Bloomer, Jonathan Bloomer’s twin brother, previously told the BBC: “It’s a slow process and it will take time. So there might be air pockets, but we don’t know. It’s still wait and see, so fingers crossed”.

The body recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday was that of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working on the Bayesian superyacht, the Italian Coastguard told Sky News.

Gareth Williams, a friend of the chef, told the BBC: “I can talk for everyone that knew him when I say he was a well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.”

Another friend, Eli Fuller, told the outlet Thomas was “friends with everybody”, “always positive” and “sought after” in his profession.

Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at around 5am local time on Monday as the area was hit by a storm.

Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coastguard said the six missing tourists were feared dead.

Asked about the likelihood of them being alive, he said: “Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not.”

“We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea. Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

“Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly.

We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.

Italy’s fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco described the operation as “complex”, with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Dr Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a senior lecturer of mechanical, biomedical and design engineering at Aston University, said that the speed at which the vessel sank (a few minutes, according to survivor and witness accounts) and the fact that it remains intact and on its side “could favour the formation of small air pockets inside”.

“This is obviously highly speculative and impossible to predict accurately,” he added.

A sign the rescuers may be looking for is a banging noise at regular intervals.

“This is common practice on submarines and was one of the signs the search mission for the Titan submarine was looking for after it went missing last year.

“But whether air pockets formed on the Bayesian is simply impossible to predict.”

Of the 22 passengers and crew onboard, 15 – including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

The Mirror reported Bacares is in a “state of shock and sadness” as she awaits news of her husband. She has reportedly been joined by the couple’s elder daughter who was not aboard the boat.

More of the yacht’s rescued crew members were named by the Italian Coastguard on Tuesday, with Leo Eppel and South African nationals Leah Randall and Katja Chicken all confirmed as having been on board.

Survivors are recuperating at a hotel complex in Porticello where authorities are gathering witness statements.

The Telegraph reported authorities are investigating whether hatches left open by crew members contributed to the sinking, as well as what onboard measures were taken in preparation for the storm.

The ship’s captain James Calfield, 51 told Italian media: “We didn’t see it coming”.

Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of conducting a massive fraud relating to the $11 billion (€9.8 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal.

The Financial Times reported that Mr Bloomer appeared at trial as a defence witness for Lynch, while media reports suggest the pair are close friends.

A spokesperson for Morgan Stanley said the bank was “shocked and saddened” while Clifford Chance said it was a “tragic incident”.

David Tabizel, Lynch’s Autonomy co-founder, told Sky News: “I’m just heartbroken for him and his family and I hope there’s a miracle about to occur.

If anyone has the resilience to survive this – he does. And I hope he’s found an air pocket.

Tabizel added: “He has been one of the most influential, intelligent and most honourable human beings I have ever had the honour of knowing.”

The former school of Lynch’s daughter has said its “thoughts are with their family and everyone involved”.

A spokesperson for Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said: “We are all incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic incident and our thoughts are with their family and everyone involved as we await further updates.”

Ed Llewellyn, British ambassador to Italy, met some of the survivors of the sinking at a hotel.

Ayla Ronald, a New Zealand national working at Clifford Chance, survived the ordeal.

Her father Lin Ronald confirmed to the Telegraph she had been invited aboard as a thanks for assistance in Lynch’s recent court case.

Another of the survivors, British tourist Charlotte Emsley, told la Repubblica she held her one-year-old daughter, Sofia, to stop her from drowning.

Charlotte and Sofia were treated in hospital, as was Sofia’s father, James Emsley.

In a separate incident, Lynch’s co-defendant in his US fraud trial, Stephen Chamberlain, died after being hit by a car while out running in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

In a statement released through Cambridgeshire Police, Mr Chamberlain’s family said: “Steve was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend.

“He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible.”

Two more bodies recovered from wreck of sunken superyacht after Mike Lynch confirmed dead

Two more bodies have been found in the wreckage of the Bayesian yacht after it capsized and sank in Sicily on Monday morning during a storm.

It comes after the bodies of Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working on the yacht, were also recovered.

Specialist diving teams searched the wreck of the superyacht and found a total of four bodies today, as the desperate search continues for two more missing passengers.

Crews were ealier seen unloading two body bags from the rescue vessels that pulled into port at Porticello Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said two other bodies had also been found Wednesday in the wreckage.

A third body bag was taken ashore at around 5.50pm local time as several rescue workers transported a blue body bag with red straps from a Guardia Costiera boat.

The discovery indicated that the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters underwater was a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed with no signs of life emerging over three days of searching, maritime experts said.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter British-flagged yacht, capsized and sank during a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Those missing were thought to have still been on the yacht, with an expert claiming they may have still be alive and relying on air pockets inside the sunken vessel. Nick Sloane, an engineer who worked on the Costa Concordia salvage operation, warned that rescuers were entering a "critical" 24-hour period to rescue anyone who may have survived.

"They've got a very small window of time to try and find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued," he explained. "You've got a maximum of two to three days to try to get someone out, so the next 24 hours are critical."

Speaking to Sky News, he said: "If the yacht is on its side, i might have more air pockets than if it's upright. She's got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I'm sure."

Of the 22 on board, fifteen people managed to escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. One body was recovered Monday - that of the ship's Antigua-born chef, Recaldo Thomas.

Six people were missing at the time – including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

With four bodies now recovered, two confirmed to be that of Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, it means two people still remain unaccounted for. Mr Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, survived.

Thomson Spirit Review

Review of thomson spirit.

The 1983-built Thomson Spirit cruise ship (fka "Marella Spirit") was a leased vessel owned by Holland America Line ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary company). The boat was launched as " ms Nieuw Amsterdam " and since 2003 was operated under a long-term charter (expired in 2017) by the UK company Marella Cruises (formerly "Thomson Cruises").

According to the shipowner Holland America Line , the ship left Marella's fleet on October 28, 2018, to join Celestyal Cruises renamed as "Celestyal Spirit". Sadly, on October 29, the vessel (renamed "Mare S") left port Piraeus-Athens to Alang India ( shipbreaking yard ) where was scrapped in November. The ship's identification numbers were 8024014 (IMO) and 248368000 (last MMSI, Malta- flagged ).

Decks and Cabins

Thomson Spirit has a total of 627 staterooms (in 10 grades) including 21x Suites, 424x Oceanviews, 203x Inside, 21x Single cabins. Most staterooms are sized 145-175-ft2. Only 4 are wheelchair-accessible rooms. The largest accommodations are the Suites (430 ft2).

Standard inside and outside cabins are rather spacious (for an older-designed liner) and have good storage space. Lots of the outside staterooms have portholes rather than standard windows. Higher-grade outside cabins are larger-sized.

The boat has 10 decks , of which 9 are passenger-accessibel and 8 with cabins.

Thomson Spirit Wiki

MS Thomson Spirit cruise ship is the longest-serving vessel in Thomson UK's fleet. The ship was built as ms Nieuw Amsterdam (link to the Holland America ship). In 2000, the vessel was taken over by United State Lines (now defunct) and renamed "ms Patriot", before chartered by Celestyal Cruises . In 2002, it was sub-chartered by Thomson and in May 2003, following a drydock refit, started operations as "Thomson Spirit".

Most of the cruise passengers are from the UK, but much younger than those on other lines popular with British cruising market. Longer itineraries attract the mid-40s and upwards couples. During school holidays, there are many families too.

Fun fact is, that during the 2014 Winter Olympics (Russia), the ship was used as a floating hotel - together with Celestyal Olympia and Grand Holiday ( CMV Magellan ).

In July 2017, Thomson Cruises announced that it extended the time of Thomson Spirit with the fleet, sailing the ship until the end of summer 2018 due to overwhelming customer demand. Thomson Spirit, which was due to cruise for the final time in November 2017, was based in Palma in April 2018, before moving to Malaga in May. Clients had the opportunity to see the best that Western Mediterranean has to offer - big city favorites like Barcelona , Lisbon and Civitavecchia-Rome , as well as lesser-known Spanish gems like Mahon , Roses and Tarragona . The last cruise of Thomson Spirit (themed "Continental Coasts" was scheduled for October 21, 2018. Then, the ship joins Celestyal Cruises .

Next table shows the liner's last cruise for Marrela (7-day roundtrip from Malaga, themed as "Continental Coasts").
