Morgan 24/25

She's fast and roomy, but plagued by centerboard problems that are tough to avoid..

Back in 1965, a St. Petersburg, Florida sailmaker named Charlie Morgan, who had been dab bling with custom racing yacht design and had come up with a remarkable string of winners, started producing a series of small- to medium-sized production boats. Introduced late that year, the Morgan 24 joined the Morgan 30, 34 and 38, becoming an instant success as a fast cruiser and club racer.

In 1968 the Morgan Yacht Corporation was bought by the conglomerate, Beatrice Foods, and by early 1969 the Morgan 24 had been renamed the Morgan 25, with some changes in specifications and options. For example, although the actual length overall remained at 24′ 11-3/4″, the advertised length moved from 24′ 11″ to 25′ 0″; inboard diesel and gasoline engine options were offered in addition to outboard power; toerails switched from teak to molded fiberglass; and the transom outboard cutout was eliminated in favor of an optional outboard bracket.

Morgan Yachts was later resold to Thor Industries and most recently to Catalina Yachts. After about 1972 more changes were made. The hull-deck connection went from through-bolted to pop-riveted; rigging blocks were downsized; window frames were changed from silver anodized aluminum to black plastic; the water tank changed from stainless steel (Monel in the early boats) to galvanized. The last Morgan 25s were built in 1976. Over the years, between 400 and 500 were built.

The Morgan 24/25s long waterline, very well balanced hull, relatively low wetted surface, large sailplan (for its vintage), and attention to small details like well-shaped foil blades and flush-faced through-hulls, provide good speed and close-winded sailing for the racer. At the same time, its shallow draft (2′ 9″ board up) and relatively roomy layout below appeal to the cruising sailor.

The boat has firm bilges to help with form stability, and a reasonable 5,000 pounds of displacement. However, with ballast placed relatively high due to the shallowness of its keel, the Morgan 24/25 is a bit on the tender side in heavy air.

The cockpit is eight feet long, but underway it comfortably seats just two on each side of a long (4-1/2′) low tiller that extends within 22 inches of the companionway. In a race, the third and fourth crew, if any, have to move from cockpit to cabintop, due to crowding and because the boat tends to get stern-heavy with crew weight aft. Because of this, serious racers tend to remove the outboard engine from the transom and stow it below, if rules permit.

The cockpit sole slopes aft to a single centerline scupper through the transom, and this works satisfactorily except for a puddle of water that gathers on the leeward side in rain, and except for the smallish scupper size (1-1/4″ diameter), which some owners have enlarged for faster drainage.

The base M/24 was offered as a relatively bare cruising version, with small (#2) South Coast sheet winches, end-boom sheeting without a traveler, short genoa tracks along the toerails, and no spinnaker gear. An extra-cost optional racing package included spinnaker gear, #3 genoa winches, longer genoa track, six extra cleats, two extra genoa cars, boom vang, snatch blocks, and traveler. Other extras included stainless bow pulpit, lifelines and stanchions, interior and running lights, and compass. The factory-installed options were fairly expensive, with the result that many sailors bought the base version and added equipment themselves. That, plus the fact that M/24s were available at one point as kits, may account for the wide variation in quality, style, and placement of equipment.

Construction

As one owner puts it, only slightly mixing metaphors, The Morgan is a Chevrolet, not a Hinckley. For the most part, owners mention defects in passing but on the whole are very satisfied. One says his forward V-berth bulkhead came loose and had to be refastened, but also reports that fiberglass work is generally neat and strong.

Most boats came off the line with faucet-type gate valves on the through-hulls; many owners report replacing them with more suitable barrel or ball valves.

On the older 24s with teak toerails, the deck is fastened to the hull along a wide L-shaped flange with 1/4-inch stainless bolts on 2-inch centers, with every other bolt passing through both teak and fiberglass-a very strong arrangement. But on the newer 25s, the teak rail was eliminated and the joint fastened with pop rivets, a weaker system that is more likely to leak.

Common problems on both 24s and 25s include leaky windows and crazed Plexiglas; a mast hinge that is virtually useless due to lack of provision for preventing side sway when lowering or raising the mast; dissatisfaction with the dated appearance of the simulated wood-grain mica bulkhead finish, which requires major effort to remove and replace; and centerboard difficulties.

The centerboard pennant arrangement is probably the weakest design detail on the boat. The board itself is a well-shaped, high-aspect ratio, solid fiberglass unit in a trunk beneath the cabin sole. The 1/8-inch stainless steel pennant wire attaches at one end of a groove molded into the top of the board, winds its way via a stainless steel piston through a stuffing box to a turning sheave forward, then through two more sheaves an to a small winch mounted on the cockpit wall. Several problems can arise due to this design. The lower portion of the pennant, being exposed to seawater, tends to corrode rapidly, and is impossible to inspect without complete disassembly. Hence frequent inspection, requiring a haul-out or scuba gear, is advised. In southern waters, some pennants have failed in less than a year of service. Additionally, several owners report trouble with cracking and leaking in the short stub of hose that bridges the stuffing box and trunk. And unless the owner adds stops at both its ends, the piston can part company with the stuffing box and possibly sink the boat.

Other centerboard-related problems: The turning sheave, under the sole forward of the trunk, is almost inaccessible; owners are well advised to cut an access hole and lubricate the sheave frequently to minimize corrosion. And on some boards, insufficient glass reinforcement around the pin can result in eventual cracking or breakage of the board at the pin hole.

The 24s and 25s at various times were made with two different interior arrangements: (1) a dinette model with a single sail locker to port, and (2) a two-quarterberth model with twin sail lockers. The dinette version has less space for sail stowage, and there is a considerable amount of wasted space under the starboard cockpit seat unless an access hole is cut in the plywood bulkhead aft of the quarterberth (which is often done). For cruising, however, the dinette model wins hands down, given the greater storage space in the galley and a hanging locker, better privacy inherent in the position of the offset head, and a sizable table for dining or laying out charts. Sitting at the dinette is uncomfortable for four people due to the deck overhanging the outboard seats. In all, most agree that the 24/25 is really a two-sleeper, two-eater vessel.

Still, the boat has practically all the interior conveniences one could want in a small cruiser, including galley, sink, ice chest, marine toilet in a private compartment, good sized berths, long self-bailing cockpit with at least one sail locker, and 5′ 8″ headroom.

The sixtyish interior aesthetics are not great and vary with model year. In 1965 the Morgan brochure says mahogany interior trim but by 1967 the standard interior was bulkheads… paneled in woodgrained mica, with oiled American Walnut trim. Carpeted cabin sole was standard, with a teak sole optional.

A common complaint among owners is that there is no good place to store a portable gas tank. The usual place is in the cabin, aft of the companionway ladder, but that can be a source of annoying-and dangerous-fumes. A 6-gallon tank can be wedged between the cockpit seats, but limits footroom and movement around the cockpit, and the extra weight in the cockpit does nothing to help performance.

Other complaints include the fact that the icebox drain runs into the bilge, providing a source of potential odors; and that ventilation is only so-so. A cowl vent fitted on the foredeck, plus a mushroom vent over the forward hatch, are recommended additions.

Performance

The long, deep board helps the 24/25 to point high, and its low wetted surface, especially with board up, gives extra speed on reaches and runs. The boat performs best in 5 to 15 knots of breeze, but can handle much higher winds when properly reefed, though several owners reported that the boat could be a bit stiffer.

The 24/25 is unusually well balanced, and in ordinary weather can be made to self-steer on a beat or close reach with tiller lashed. However, in very heavy air carrying a chute, it has a marked tendency to broach.

A typical PHRF rating is 219, compared to a J/24 at 171 and a Cape Dory 25 at 261.

Pride of ownership seems particularly evident among owners of the early M/24s, who tend to turn up their noses at the later M/25 as a less sturdy and well-appointed boat. Over the years, both models, and particularly kit boats, are likely to have had major changes to equipment and rigging, some good, some bad. Consequently, prospective buyers should check to be sure any such modifications are appropriate, and should keep in mind that these boats are now 18 to 28 years old, so should be closely inspected for gear that can fail due to aging. Most such gear is repairable, but at a cost. Still, if you find one on which extensive work isn’t necessary, it can be a real bargain as well as a real pleasure to own and use.

In 1972 the Morgan 25 had a base price of $7,495. Earlier models in reasonable condition can be had today for about $5,000, more depending on sail inventories end equipment. Inboard models of the 25 are higher yet, though we feel the outboard model is a better choice.

The Morgan 24/25 makes a wonderful small cruiser and club racer, and can be a solid value if you buy the right boat. Construction quality has varied over the years, and so has quality and quantity of equipment purchased by individual owners. Moreover, all 24s and 25s, even the good ones, are beginning to show their age. Buyers are advised to make a careful inspection to be sure they’re not getting a boat with more problems than they care to handle.

Her removable crew bags house personal belongings, and can be stored under the benches. Her indoor/outdoor table can be used in the salon or cockpit, and there is even a dedicated place for a chemical toilet. For technical storage, there is a large-volume capacity under the cockpit area, accessible from the exterior. All interior components function as parts of the boat structure. MCP Yachts to build 24m sailing yacht on spec

Brazilian yard MCP Yachts has revealed plans to build a 24 metre performance sloop on speculation named Flying Ahead Time .

Naval architects Manoel Chaves and Alejandro Bottino set out to design a sailing yacht that was modern, comfortable and energy-efficient, without sacrificing speed and performance. MCP Yachts said: “Flying Ahead Time means a vessel beyond her time. A new age. Good speed, good stability, environment friendly, [and] good efficiency in all conditions”.

The yacht will feature the yard’s proprietary Sailing Booster system – two electronic hydrofoils which improve performance, as well as comfort and stability when cruising or at anchor. The system also allows for a reduction in keel weight and draft so sailors can venture into shallower waters.

Throughout the design process, it was important that interior life was not compromised by the exterior aesthetics of the yacht. The yard said: “The vessel must have an interior to prove that to go to the sea with comfort is possible in a sailboat”. This includes an open-plan saloon illuminated by a skylight, with a navigation area and galley.

Accommodation is for up to ten guests in one forward master suite , two bunk bed cabins and two aft twin cabins either side of the engine room.

A clean deck layout, self-tacking genoa and twin rudders make for easy handling, while a folding bimini and dodger protect the large cockpit from the elements. An aft lazarette can be used as a small tender garage .

The yacht’s hull will be made from aluminium with a draft of 2.52 metres and a beam of 6.68 metres.

She will be powered by a single 1,015hp Caterpillar C18 diesel engine with Doen water jet propulsion to reduce drag whilst sailing. She has a maximum speed of 25 knots with a total sailplan of 219 metres squared.

Construction of the hull is due to start in August 2018 at MCP Yachts’ facility in São Paulo, Brazil.

The yard has recently revealed details of its forthcoming MCP 92.5 RPH yacht - a 27.74 metre in-house design built entirely from aluminium.

Boston Celtics Victory Parade and Traffic Advisory

The City of Boston will host a duck boat parade on Friday, June 21, 2024, to celebrate the Celtics winning their 18th NBA Championship.

Parade Route and Map

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Causeway Street and then follow Staniford Street to Cambridge Street to Tremont Street to Boylston Street, before ending near the Hynes Convention Center.

Public Transportation

Those attending the parade are strongly encouraged to use public transportation. Riders can find more information on MBTA service, parking, paying fares, and more during Friday’s Celtics Championship Parade on the MBTA's website . 

The MBTA will have increased subway service and modified Commuter Rail schedules with additional train times before and after the parade. Riders are strongly encouraged to purchase roundtrip fares in advance.

Accessibility

The parade route will include two designated accessible viewing areas - on City Hall Plaza on the Cambridge Street side and outside of the Boston Public Library on Boylston Street.  There is no reserved seating at these viewing areas. 

Bluebikes, the regional bike share service, is another great way to get around the City. Information on passes and station locations may be found on the Bluebikes website .

A 30-percent-off Black Friday sale on a cruise aboard a yacht meant off-season sailing and being prepared for the unexpected.

As Croatians tell the story , the Greek hero Odysseus was shipwrecked and held captive on the Croatian island of Mljet. Visiting in May, I and six other sailors embraced the myth when the motor on our 54-foot yacht failed.

“Remember, Odysseus spent seven years on Mljet,” said Ivan Ljubovic, our captain. “We can do two nights.”

In the scheme of things, the clogged fuel filter that impeded our progress on a seven-night, island-hopping cruise from Split to Dubrovnik on a yacht — which the passengers helped sail — was minor. Though an engine, even on a sailboat, is vital for docking and sticking to schedules on becalmed days, most of my shipmates agreed that getting waylaid in a village with Roman ruins on a turquoise bay was an acceptable fate.

I had been resigned to what were, in my mind, worse inconveniences when I had signed up for the trip last November. Then, the tour operator G Adventures had put several trips on sale over the Black Friday weekend. Its best deals were in the off-season, which meant potentially chilly weather and closed restaurants and attractions. But leaving in late April for seven nights of island hopping at roughly $1,300 — after a 30 percent discount — was too tempting to pass up.

My cousin Kim agreed and we made plans to pack rain gear and meet in Split to test the budget waters.

‘Everything between is an adventure’

Little about the itinerary was published pre-departure and none of it was firm.

“Split and Dubrovnik are fixed,” said the captain, who would pilot the ship solo and double as our guide, on our first day. “Everything between is an adventure.”

It started with the Sauturnes, a handsome Kufner yacht with four snug guest cabins, four economical bathrooms where the retractable faucet doubled as a shower spigot, and a spacious galley. Our “crew,” a mix of Australians and Americans ranging from 18 to 75 — all of whom had also jumped on the promotional pricing — spent most of the time atop the boat, where foam mattresses invited sunbathing and a cockpit awning provided shade.

The weather, which turned out to be sunny and comfortably cool, was not our greatest concern. The G Adventures website had mentioned well-known islands, including beachy Brac and Vis , which played a convincing Greek idyll in the movie “Mamma Mia 2.” But since many places would be closed in the shoulder season, we would proceed, according to the captain, based on the dictates of the weather and conditions on shore.

Meals were not included, which meant finding open restaurants was critical. For shipboard breakfasts and lunches, we each chipped in 50 euros (about $54) for communal groceries, which we shopped for at local markets. At night, we would dine at restaurants; G Adventures advised budgeting $250 to $325 for the week, which was accurate, though we often splurged on Croatian wine (a carafe of house red averaged $15).

Small ports

After the frenzy of grocery shopping and moving into the bunk-bedded cabin Kim and I shared, we experienced the Zen of sailing as the ship set off on a sunny morning for 43-mile-long Hvar , the longest and purportedly sunniest island in Croatia.

Neighboring islands drifted past as the wind patterned the sea in shifting ripples and ruffles. A flock of shearwaters soared by at eye level.

Within a few hours, the ridgelines of steep Hvar appeared, revealing terraced lavender fields and olive orchards. Motoring down a long, narrow inlet, we arrived in Stari Grad , a village of stone homes with terra cotta roof tiles, as travelers had since 384 B.C., when Greek sailors from the island of Paros settled here.

Our mooring provided a front-row view of fishing boats and cafes animating the waterfront. Stari Grad’s attractions, including the Greek ruins of Faros and a 17th-century Venetian cathedral, had yet to open for the season, but we relished exploring the old quarter’s narrow lanes and deserted plazas.

From the waterfront, an aerobic 20-minute hike up a steep hill crowned by a giant white cross offered views over Stari Grad and the plains beyond, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of fourth-century agricultural fields, with stone walls circumscribing grapevines and olive orchards.

That evening, we visited them to reach Konoba Kokot , a farm restaurant that specializes in “peka,” a kind of barbecue in which meat cooks under an iron lid piled with hot coals. The family that runs it opened in the preseason, welcoming us with bracing shots of rakija, a local herbal liquor. At a long table under an arbor, we gorged on homemade goat cheese, wild boar pate and, from the hearth, roast lamb, veal and octopus with limitless jugs of red and white wine for 35 euros a person.

Starry nights

Small ships are unmatched at getting into small ports, but a yacht trip is also a little like camping, starting most mornings with D.I.Y. instant coffee. Marinas offered free bathhouses with showers.

Cool temperatures apparently deterred the celebrity-filled mega yachts, which are known to anchor in the town of Hvar on the south shore of Hvar island. Our captain declared it the “Mykonos of Croatia” as we motored by the port bustling with visitors carrying shopping bags and cones of gelato.

With clear weather in the forecast, we moored in an undeveloped cove east of town. The mooring belonged to the owners of Moli Onte restaurant, who ferried us to land on a motorized dingy, allowing us enough time before dinner to visit the fortress above Hvar and have an Ozujsko beer on St. Stephens Square, the largest in the region of Dalmatia.

Back on board, with no artificial light to wash out the night sky, we hit the upper deck for stargazing. As my shipmates peeled off to bed, I grabbed a blanket and beanie and bedded down under the stars for the evolving show, periodically waking to catch the drama of the moon rising, reflected in the still water.

Little Dubrovnik

Fingers of gray rock reached down to meet sloping vineyards along Hvar’s south coast as we departed for its neighbor, Korcula. On our longest day of sailing, five hours, I welcomed the chance to play first mate, manning the lines on the jib sail.

To break up the trip, Captain Ljubovic navigated to a quiet cove off the Peljesac Peninsula where the Caribbean-blue waters, cloudless sky and sandy bottom convinced us to jump in despite numbing sea temperatures.

Fifteenth-century walls ring the historic center of Korcula, earning it the nickname “Little Dubrovnik.” Past the stone gates carved with a winged lion representing the empire of Venice, which controlled much of the Adriatic after the 13th century, narrow alleys led to ornate churches and mansions. There was no better history trip than getting lost in the web of pedestrian lanes. Or so we told ourselves as we passed the purported home of Marco Polo, still closed preseason.

Along the seafront walls, restaurants served pizza and seafood under lights strung in the pines and we caught sunset from a former turret, now converted into Massimo Cocktail Bar , which requires patrons to climb a ladder to the rooftop, a caution against second rounds.

The most romantic port of the trip was also the rowdiest, at least in the marina, which was hosting a Polish sailing regatta. When I headed for the showers at 6 a.m. the next morning, I found a group still cheerfully dancing atop a yacht littered in empty booze bottles and crushed potato chips.

Marooned on Mljet

We left Korcula on strong 20-knot “jugo” or south winds and Captain Ljubovic unleashed the sails, saying “You paid for a sailing vacation, not a motorboat.”

As we tacked back and forth toward Mljet , the boat heeled at a queasy angle and we took face shots of ocean spray.

On Mljet, where the western end of the island is home to Mljet National Park , we rented bikes (10 euros) to ride a lung-busting route over the park’s mountain spine. On the other side, we cycled around a pair of inland lakes and took a boat trip to a 12th-century monastery built on an island in one of them (park admission, 15 euros).

Docked in the still sleepy town of Polace, we heard tales of high season, when up to 100 yachts anchor in the bay and members of the band U2 were once seen biking in the park. After a brief shower, the town glimmered at sunset and the restaurant Stella Maris welcomed us with grilled sea bass (25 euros) and prawns (20 euros).

“I’m so glad I chose this time, because I don’t do crowds,” said my shipmate Nova Hey, 46, of Sydney, who was traveling with her 18-year-old daughter.

In the morning, I had the trail to the peak of Montokuc to myself. The roughly three-mile round-trip hike reached one of the highest points on the island, a rocky knob with stunning panoramas shared by a family of feral goats.

Not long thereafter, the Sauternes’ engine refused to turn over, stranding us in a national park on a remote island with no mechanics.

Teeming Dubrovnik

The next morning, Captain Ljubovic jimmied a fix but it didn’t last long and the engine died again, this time just opposite a cave on Mljet that we joked had to be the refuge of Odysseus.

After a morning of light sailing, a mechanic from the mainland arrived by speedboat and within an hour we were motoring toward the Franjo Tudman Bridge that spans the inlet to the Dubrovnik marina where hot showers awaited.

“Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in Croatia,” said Captain Ljubovic as we spent the last of our pooled money, 70 euros, hiring a taxi van to get us to and from the walled heart of the ancient city about 15 minutes away.

With two large cruise ships in port, Dubrovnik was teeming with visitors and the price to climb the stone walls that encircle the city was a sticker-shocking 35 euros. (In the ensuing two days Kim and I would spend post-cruise in the city, we bought the more comprehensive Dubrovnik Pass for 35 euros that included admission to the walls as well as several museums and public bus transportation.)

On our final evening, we measured the lack of crowds versus closed museums; perfect hiking weather versus swim-inviting water; ample dock space versus more restaurant choices — and felt we’d come out ahead sailing in the bargain season.

One dead after vehicle plunges into river off Carrabelle boat ramp Thursday

The victim’s cat was also inside of the vehicle, according to the franklin county sheriff’s office.

CARRABELLE, Fla. (WCTV) - A Georgia woman died Thursday after her vehicle ran off of the Timber Island Boat Ramp during the early morning hours Thursday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident unfolded between the hours of 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., per the sheriff’s office.

The woman, identified by law enforcement as Judy Cooper, 77, of Tifton, Georgia, was found unbuckled inside the vehicle, where the sheriff’s office said she drowned. Cooper’s cat was also inside the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was also called to the scene to assist with the crime scene.

Wings of change: A new foiling era in ocean sports is already underway in Rhode Island

More than 10 years ago in Newport, the foiling and levitating catamarans of the America's Cup World Series heralded a hydrofoil revolution.

A decade later, after lots of testing and refinement, that revolution has given birth to an entirely new era in ocean watersports.

Call it the foil era.

And it's already here in Rhode Island, in full foiling force, just in time for the summer of 2024.

"We are at an unbelievable stage in the evolution of foiling," says Denton Chase, an accomplished foilboarder whose surfing nickname is "Beasho."

Chase rides his foil in waves off Matunuck each summer before he returns home to Half Moon Bay, California, for another nine months of ocean play, frequently on the mammoth world-famous waves at a reef off Mavericks Beach , and sometimes with big-wave master Jeff Clark and other legends of surf.

Most of Rhode Island's foilboarders, or "foilers," remain in love with the traditional sensations of conventional surfing or paddle-surfing or wind sports such as kiteboarding or sailboarding.

But the magic of a hydrofoil can help a rider enjoy such "disciplines" far more frequently, according to Chase and other local foilers.

Plus, the foiling itself, which is yet another distinct water-sport sensation, is quite fun, too, they say, like "floating on a cloud" or snowboarding in the lightest of powder, Chase says.

"It's never too flat, too windy, too big or too perfect to foil," the 54-year-old says. "It's all great."

The number of people who ride foils are multiplying: If you didn't see one last summer, prepare for a first sighting this summer.

On a Sunday in early June, Chase is prowling through the outer reefs off Napatree Beach.

His eyes twinkle as he surveys the tops of messy ocean swells heaped by an incoming current.

He's riding in a boat. But he can't wait to get on his foilboard.

Just about everywhere he looks, Chase sees a free ride he can hitch.

Foilboards combine power of water and wings

A hydrofoil is basically a set of wings that interacts with water, providing lift and support like the wings of an airplane.

The physics of hydrofoiling allow a foil of much smaller size by comparison.

Modern foilboards are so efficient that some riders can generate enough lift and power to propel themselves with nothing but their own body movements.

A highly skilled pumping action generates lift and forward movement. Old-fashioned paddle-power can help, too.

Some foilers practice this type of foiling in place of a gym workout. But this typically isn't what motivated them to learn foiling in the first place.

Harnessing nature's gifts for fun in all conditions

The main objective for many foilers involves the energy that Mother Nature gifts to them in various combinations, especially in the Ocean State.

They've always harnessed these forces for the fun of it. But thanks to their new-fangled foils, they aren't as needy for one-of-a-kind weather events these days.

Foils offer fun in the lamest of surfing conditions, traditionally speaking, or in the lightest of breezes. It's possible for some people to ride a foil on the current.

"You can create a lot of energy out of nothing quickly," says Christian Schlebach, a foiler and oceaneering Newport businessman whose company, Hooley , sells foiling equipment.

"There's so many more places you can do this," Schlebach says.

"There's no days off," he adds.

Foil surfers, unlike traditional surfers, can catch and ride an ocean swell long before it breaks. In fact, some can ride a swell that doesn't break at all.

A foil surfer with a standup paddleboard might venture way out beyond the break at First Beach in Newport to capture and ride a shorebound swell long before it curls near the sandbar.

Another foil rider, averse to that much paddling, might choose a shorter board and stay in the breaking waves and whitewater.

In this discipline, the paddling part is on the tummy, or "prone," as they call it. But the most enthusiastic practitioners of prone foil surfing usually aren't prone for long.

They can ride a wave toward shore, exit with enough energy to carve a turn, and coast offshore – going against the surf – for another ride and a fresh burst of energy. With the pumping-type body movements and no paddle, some can keep their surfing stances from one wave ride to the next.

Other foilboarders – or quite possibly the very same people on some other day – might choose a "wing" for extra power generation.

It's a wing – not a sail – in the lingo.

Foilboarding wings are hand-held.

The leading edge of the canopy has an internal air-inflated bladder that provides structure and shape.

A central strut, somewhat akin to the boom of a sailboard, is inflated, too, with a simple air pump.

Such wings can capture wind, flying stably in the breeze held by just one hand. Wingboarders call it "flagging the wing."

A new era in water sport means new sporting feats

In Rhode Island, such foils and wings have opened up vast new riding territory, depending on the conditions and the desired type of riding.

One popular combination involves an incoming tide and a north wind blustering down Narragansett Bay in the opposite direction.

The wind adds some extra shape to an incoming current-driven swell.

Wing-wielding foilers target such swells, launching from points along the southern passages and reaching out into the Bay on the north wind.

Then they catch the incoming swell and release the wing.

Wing foilers launching in Saunderstown near the Jamestown Bridge, or at Fort Getty in Jamestown, will ride a north wind south to Beavertail. Then, they'll catch the incoming swells and ride them back.

Trailing behind them, their leashed wings glide gently in the breeze like pet seagulls as the swell propels them northbound on the foil. When that gets boring, it's an easy downwind sail back to where they came from.

At the moment, some of the sports pioneers are testing their abilities in extreme ways. In April, says Chase, a Californian named Kyle Pemberton rode a foil 55 miles from Mavericks to Santa Cruz on a wind-driven swell.

The skill and confidence that's necessary for adventures of such magnitude don't come easily. Also, foils have lots of hard edges, which raises the stakes of wipeouts in crowded surfing breaks.

But as Chase points out, foiling is possible in lots of different places. That includes some pretty safe environments for learners.

What's it like learning to foil?

Many foilers start out water-ski style, behind a boat with a tow rope, before they move on to riding foils with help from waves, swells, current or wind.

Schlebach strongly recommends learning the balancing of riding a foil on an electrically powered foil board, or eFoil, which he rents.

"It's like an airplane running down a runway," he said. "When the foil hits a certain speed, it lifts."

At about 5 miles per hour of speed, the foil begins to lift, Schlebach said. At 8 miles per hour, it's "fully loaded."

Handling the lift, which is instantaneous, is a big part of the early learning curve.

Novice foilboarders learn to keep their body steady and forward to leverage their own weight against the lift of the foil, which wants to lift right out of the water. Without proper correction and balance, the outcome is a wipeout.

Once a foil is underway, it moves through the water with far less drag than a paddleboard, kayak or sailboard.

A rider can coast through a lull if the wind cuts out briefly or a swell fades for a moment.

"You can literally glide through the lulls," Schlebach said.

How does foiling in Matunuck compare with California's Mavericks Beach?

To date, only a few people have ever foilsurfed anywhere near the most forceful "Outer Bowl" section of the reef at Mavericks, according to Chase.

Citing evidence that includes a 2018 video , Chase claims he was the first foilsurfer to catch and ride waves on the reef on a standup foil board and under his own paddle power without any tow-in.

He estimates that he rides Mavericks and other nearby terrain in the Pillar Point area 200 times a year.

Chase, whose middle name is "Summers," also summers with his family each year on Groton Long Point in eastern Connecticut.

And these days, the Mavericks surfer says his fun flows right through his annual East Coast sojourn, thanks to "exhilarating" local foiling opportunities.

He talks with a sense of fulfillment about stalking the most paltry movements of saltwater on Long Island Sound near Groton Long Point.

He figures he foiled off Matunuck 100 times last year. Compared with his hometown turf, he says, the Rhode Island conditions are glassier and less messy with greater frequency.

"I'm out when no one else is," he says, "because it's too flat or too bumpy or imperfect. But these are dreamy welcome conditions compared to Northern California."

Indeed, no one else is at play in the heaving swells just east of Watch Hill's lighthouse, and just south of "Holiday House" – Taylor Swift's vacation home up on the bluff.

The small center console boat bobs dramatically in the chop. Nothing about the conditions looks very promising for boarding. But Chase raves.

He pulls out a hand tool. Then, he bolts a sharp-edged foil to his experts-only board, which he built himself.

His hair is wet from rain and spray. In a metaphorical way, Chase says he intends to keep it dry. In other words, no wipeouts or even light falls. From the boat, he carefully sits himself on the floating foil board.

A short distance away, he paddles furiously. His foil takes off. The ride lasts more than a minute and whisks him a distance of almost three football fields. The course zigs extensively and then it zags just off the pop-singer's beach. Soon, Chase will joke that he's seen her boyfriend, Travis Kelce.

But first, he paddles out again for another magic carpet ride.

Allegheny County 911 said services were dispatched at 8:46 p.m. to Brackenridge Park.

There were no reports of injuries, as officials said there were no occupants on the boat at the time of the fire.

Firefighters extinguished the flames by 10:25 p.m.

Pittsburgh police search for missing girl

Pittsburgh police said Special Victims Unit detectives are searching for a 13-year-old girl who has been missing for three days.

Tabitha Clark is described as 5-foot-7 with brown eyes and hair in long black braids with a blonde streak. She was last seen wearing a pink head scarf with large flowers, a “bluish sweatshirt” and light blue slides that look like sharks.

Clark was last seen in the Brighton Heights neighborhood on June 21, 2024, around 11:30 p.m. Police said she may have been headed to the Downtown Pittsburgh area.

A 16-year-old girl was piloting the personal watercraft with a 13-year-old girl about 5:15 p.m. northbound near a channel to Grass Lake when they crashed into a boat, the Lake County sheriff’s office said.

The 55-year-old man driving the Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser was unable to avoid the collision with the WaveRunner, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, the sheriff’s office said.

Both girls, who were wearing life vests, were thrown into the water and knocked unconscious, officials said.

Occupants of the boat pulled them out of the water and rendered aid before taking the girls to shore with another passing boat, officials said.

The girls were taken to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where they were pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.

No other injuries were reported.

Autopsies were scheduled for Thursday. The girls’ names haven’t been released.

The crash remains under investigation.

It is irresponsible to obsess over President Biden’s tendency to mangle a couple of words in a speech while Donald Trump is out there sounding detached from reality. Biden, who is old , at least makes sense. Trump, who also is old , rants like someone you’d cross the street to avoid.

We in the media have failed by becoming inured to Trump’s verbal incontinence — not just the rapid-fire lies and revenge-seeking threats, but also the frightening glimpses into a mind that is, evidently, unwell. In 2016, Trump said outrageous things at his campaign rallies to be entertaining. In 2024, his tangents raise serious questions about his mental fitness.

His rally on Sunday in Las Vegas offered a grim smorgasbord of examples, but the obvious standout (and not in a good way) is the story he told about being aboard a hypothetical electric-powered boat . He posits that the battery would be so heavy that it would cause the craft to sink, and he relates his purported conversation with a knowledgeable mariner about this scenario. Bear with me, but it’s worth reading the passage in full:

“I say, ‘What would happen if the boat sank from its weight, and you’re in the boat, and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery’s now underwater, and there’s a shark that’s approximately 10 yards over there?’ “By the way, a lot of shark attacks lately, do you notice that? Lot of sharks. I watched some guys justifying it today: ‘Well they weren’t really that angry, they bit off the young lady’s leg because of the fact that they were not hungry but they misunderstood who she was.’ These people are crazy. He said, ‘There’s no problem with sharks, they just didn’t really understand a young woman swimming.’ No, really got decimated, and other people, too, a lot of shark attacks. “So I said, ‘There’s a shark 10 yards away from the boat, 10 yards, or here. Do I get electrocuted if the boat is sinking, water goes over the battery, the boat is sinking? Do I stay on top of the boat and get electrocuted, or do I jump over by the shark and not get electrocuted?’ Because I will tell you, he didn’t know the answer. “He said, ‘You know, nobody’s ever asked me that question.’ I said, ‘I think it’s a good question. I think there’s a lot of electric current coming through that water.’ But you know what I’d do if there was a shark or you get electrocuted? I’ll take electrocution every single time. I’m not getting near the shark. So we’re going to end that, we’re going to end it for boats, we’re going to end it for trucks.”

Trucks? He’s actually talking about the transition to electric vehicles , which he has vowed to halt. That entire hallucination is part of Trump’s rationale for one of his major policy positions.

Trump has told the electrocution-or-shark story at least once before , at a rally in Iowa last October. Stormy Daniels , the adult-film actress who received $130,000 in hush money to keep quiet about her sexual encounter with Trump — a payment that led to the former president’s conviction on 34 felony charges — has said that Trump is “obsessed with sharks, terrified of sharks.” Way back in 2013, he declared on Twitter: “Sharks are last on my list — other than perhaps the losers and haters of the World!”

The White House press corps would be in wolf pack mode if Biden were in the middle of a speech and suddenly veered into gibberish about boats and sharks. There would be front-page stories questioning whether the president, at 81, was suffering from dementia; and the op-ed pages would be filled with thumb-suckers about whether Vice President Harris and the Cabinet should invoke the 25th Amendment . House Republicans would already have scheduled hearings on Biden’s mental condition and demanded he take a cognitive test.

The tendency with Trump, at 77, is to say he’s “just being Trump.” But he’s like this all the time.

Also during the Las Vegas speech, Trump tried to deny the allegation by one of his White House chiefs of staff, retired Marine Gen. John F. Kelly, that he refused in 2018 to visit an American military cemetery in France, saying it was filled with “suckers” and “losers.” Trump told the crowd on Sunday that “only a psycho or a crazy person or a very stupid person” would say such a thing while “I’m standing there with generals and military people in a cemetery.”

But he wasn’t “standing there” with anybody. He never went to the cemetery .

Except in his mind, perhaps, which is a much bigger problem than Biden fumbling a name or garbling a sentence.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
