We compare specifications, dimensions, sail area, and pricing on the most popular 40ft catamarans in 2020.

Since 2016, Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, Leopard, Bali, and Nautitech all rolled out new 40 ft catamaran models in a similar price range that are innovative, spacious, well-built, and comfortable. The latest model to be added to this 40ft array in 2020 is the Bali Catspace.

Bali has done away with the Bali 4.1 model and has designed the Bali Catspace with much improved and innovative features while Lagoon updated their popular L400 and redesigned it with the mast further back to accommodate a self-tacking jib, open scoops, and updated interior. The FP Lucia 40, released in 2016, has pretty much stayed the same, as has the Leopard 40. They are both very popular and successful cats. While the Nautitech Open 40 is a nice sporty sailing cat, it has not really taken hold in the US market with the aft helm stations.

These 40ft catamaran models are affordable and easily be handled by a coupled. It also has all the amenities suitable for a cruising boat such as an ice maker, washing machine, bigger fridge/freezer capacity, and big living spaces, which is very attractive for live-aboard cruising couples. 

The 40ft catamaran holds its value because it is in high demand on the used boat market. The 40ft catamaran size range just makes sense.

READER'S QUESTION ANSWERED: Andy asked: "Which Cat is the best value and what do you budget for upgrades that deliver an above average sailing and comfort experience?" 

The pricing for the different brands are generally in the same range since this a competitive space and the manufacturers have to make sure they are not priced out of the market. There are essentially no “bad catamarans”. Most are all built to recognized and enforced codes such as the European CE standard, so it comes down to personal preference. Some boats have Balsa cores and others have closed cell foam cores. Some have large nets, others have small nets and some have no nets.

All the forward deck designs are acceptable and safe, as we have now conclusively seen over the last five years. The current trend is smaller nets and larger foredeck areas for the most part on cruising cats. Performance cats all have nets and longer bows and are a different category to the production cruisers. Lagoon has the biggest living space, Bali has the best live-ability overall and FP and Leopard are very popular for couples with the semi-raised helm position but that too is a personal preference.

In terms of the extras or additional options, I normally recommend the following:

• The largest engine option available – this is important for your exit strategy especially in the US market and of course it is nice to have the extra power since the modern cats have quite a lot of windage.
• The best winch pack available
• All the cleats offered
• Mostly it is smart to take the code zero pack even if you do not order the sail immediately (Difficult and expensive to retro fit)
• Folding props – I really think that if you are going to do any extended cruising the last thing you want is to be dragging fixed props
• Air Conditioning if you want to have it
• Generator unless you are going to go Lithium with all the inverters and electronics to replace the generator.
• Solar – I normally take the factory option and then add aftermarket to increase the array
• If possible cable throttles and not electronic (If you are struck by lightning at least you can still control the engines if they still run)
• Electrically assisted davits at a minimum – your dinghy is your “car” so one needs to have an efficient handling system (we raise our dinghy every night for security)
• Watermaker is fantastic to have. It really makes life so much easier.
• Estelle will definitely opt for the washing machine – we never had one but since she’s had it onboard our Lagoon 450, she will not go without again.

HI Chrissy thank you! The performance of the boats are all very similar. They are all cruising cats, so not exactly rocket ships but totally adequate for a an average cruising couple. You could get a little more performance out of any of these boats depending on how aggressively you sail the boat and the type of sails you have. We race our boat and almost always end up in the top three boats.

The 40 Open has the longest WL, Largest Sail Area and has the lightest displacement… indicating it ‘should’ sail better than the others. Other than the helm position, what are the other differences (drawbacks?) you have observed or can comment on (if any)? It appears to be trying to straddle the ‘performance / cruiser’ designation… would you say it is successful?

Doug, yes you are correct however it is a displacement hull, just like the other cats in this category and while it may be a little lighter and have a bigger sailplan, it sails marginally faster, so that is not too much of a factor. In general they are nice boats but the living space is small and just like the new Excess range from Lagoon, the biggest drawback of these cats in our market is the helm position. The aft helm station have just never caught on, which is the reason that Catana and Outremer also moved their helm stations to the bulkhead rather than on the sterns.

The Lagoon 40 has come to replace her previous 39 and 400 models. Designed by VPLP, the new cat adopted the style of her larger predecessors, including the angular transoms, lengthier rectangular hull ports to let natural light stream in below. The design also includes a coach roof that shapes into an upward angled composite hard drop, giving her a more “aggressive” look. Special attention was placed into keeping the weight low.

The interior has not gone through any overly dramatic change, but the tweaks have been given an extra feel of luxury. The Gemini cat has always been one of the silent achievers in American boatbuilding. Once again, they have delivered greatness with the Legacy 35.

She still has roughly the same looks as her predecessors with the familiar hardtop pilothouse and elongated upswept side ports. Her cockpit, however, has been rebranded to include an optional aft bench for stowage.

The interior layout has seen changes, but this has improved the comfort she provides in a lot of ways. The saloon has been designed to take a U-shape on the centerline in the raised pilothouse.

Se positionner sur le marché du catamaran de 40 pieds

Bali Catamarans , constructeur français de catamarans basé à Canet en Roussillon, vient d'annoncer le lancement d'un nouveau modèle à voile. Baptisé Catspace, ce catamaran de 40 pieds (11,80 m de longueur de coque) — dont le design a été quelque peu modernisé — sera dévoilé en janvier 2020 à Düsseldorf.

"Plusieurs éléments nous ont amenés à avoir cette réflexion. Premièrement, notre 4.1 est en fait un 42 pieds et pas un 40 pieds. Il nous fallait donc un bateau plus petit capable de se positionner face la concurrence du marché : Lagoon 40, Lucia 40, Leopard 40… Enfin, notre cœur de marché est la location et le Catspace y est destiné, dans sa version propriétaire (3 cabines), mais principalement dans sa version 4 cabines" explique Boris Compagnon, directeur commercial de Bali Catamarans .

4 cabines et 10 couchages

Principalement destiné à la location, le Catspace est proposé en 3 ou 4 cabines avec lits double et salle d'eau privative. Mais là où le chantier se distingue, c'est sa faculté à proposer 10 couchages, hors carré. Ce dernier ne sera d'ailleurs transformable en couchage supplémentaire.

"Dans la pratique on aurait pu, mais 10 personnes sur un 40 pieds ça fait déjà beaucoup" détaille Brice Compagnon.

En effet, les cabines avant – dont l'aménagement a été revu pour proposer des lits face à la mer — accueilleront une bannette escamotable, idéale pour coucher un enfant en bas âge par exemple.

"La disposition des lits en travers est une nouveauté pour offrir une vue sur la mer et dégager de l'espace pour un lit supplémentaire escamotable. On offre ainsi 4 lits identiques que ce soit à l'avant ou à l'arrière. Souvent, le confort est un peu moindre dans les cabines avant, ce sera différent ici" ajoute le directeur commercial.

Offrir des zones de vie supplémentaires

Si la différence de longueur n'est pas flagrante entre les deux modèles : 12,12 m hors-tout pour le 4.1 contre 12,33 m de long pour le Catspace et 11,88 de longueur de coque pour le premier contre 11,80 m pour le 2e, le Catspace propose néanmoins un nouvel espace de vie extérieur.

"Le Catspace est le seul catamaran de 40 pieds à proposer un grand flybridge avec une zone navigation et une zone bain-de-soleil. C'est une zone de confort supplémentaire. Notre leitmotiv c'est d'offrir des zones qui n'existaient pas auparavant. C'est ce que nous avions déjà fait avec un cockpit avant en lieu et place du trampoline ou encore avec un espace de pont décloisonné, où ce que nous faisons avec ce flybridge sur un catamaran de petite taille. Nous mettons à disposition des propriétaires qui ne l'étaient pas jusqu'alors" conclut Boris Compagnon.

Le Catspace — sera commercialisé à un tarif standard un peu inférieur à 300 000 € HT — et présenté à Düsseldorf en 2020. Une version moteur sera également déclinée et annoncée prochainement par Bali Catamarans .

Qu’est-ce qu’un catamaran Nautitech ?

Par définition, un catamaran est un bateau possédant deux coques positionnées l’une à côté de l’autre. Il se classe donc dans la catégorie des bateaux multicoques qui comprend également le trimaran.

Le mot catamaran est issu du mot “kattuamaran” issu de la langue tamoule “katta” qui signifie lien et maram qui veut dire “bois”.

Un marin ou skipper sera intégré pour profiter des extraordinaires qualités de ces multicoques de grande taille. La frontière se situe le plus souvent à 55 pieds.

KNYSNA 500 SE :  Indestructible !

Comme le port d'Afrique du Sud auquel il emprunte son patronyme, le 500 SE a du caractère – Knysnia est une splendide ville au fond d'une baie-lagon dont l'entrée est sportive par mer agitée. Solidement construit pour affronter sans dommages des conditions difficiles, ce catamaran est livré très équipé, et la personnalisation est la règle. Le salon de cockpit est bien défendu, et la timonerie en semi-fly comporte un toit ouvrant qui permet de fermer la navstation par mauvais temps. L'ébénisterie classique des aménagements intérieurs est superbe et évoque un style british soigné. Le constructeur propose également un 550, décliné en version voile ou moteur.

La sortie du 60 a été accueillie avec enthousiasme par les spécialistes ; Rapido Trimarans a donc demandé aux architectes Morelli/Melvin une version à bras repliables pour rationaliser le stationnement en marina. Ce bicabine reprend beaucoup d’éléments de son grand frère. Le poste de barre surélevé offre une excellente visibilité tout en protégeant le cockpit. Le redan très prononcé au-dessus de la flottaison procure un volume intérieur surprenant sans grever les performances, toujours prioritaires. Ce multicoque innovant, conçu par une des équipes mondiales les plus expérimentées, renouvelle le genre en offrant aux marins avides de sensations un outil digne de leurs exigences. Sortie prévue en 2020.

Le catamaran Outremer fête ses 40 ans

Juin 1984, à la Grande-Motte, Gérard Danson, jeune architecte du chantier Conati, associé au meilleur technicien Daniel Cailloux, se lance dans la construction d’un catamaran de 40 pieds destiné à la croisière hauturière. Designer et créateur visionnaire, Gérard Danson comprend que légèreté, coques fines et fardage réduit sont les éléments-clés garantissant les qualités marines d’un multicoque.

Un deuxième bateau est mis en chantier avant même le lancement du premier, l’enthousiasme gagne de nouveaux compagnons qui se joignent à l’aventure. Passionnés par la mer, de voyage et attachés à la belle ouvrage, les associés s’accordent sur un nom : Atelier Outremer. Installé face au port, Gérard travaille et vit dans son atelier et l’Outremer 40 prend forme avec le coup de crayon de l’architecte.

La photographe Sandrine Crouzet a réalisé les premières photos de l’Outremer 40 lorsque Gérard Danson la contacte en 1989 pour effectuer des photos intérieures de son bateau. Ce dernier meurt en 2005. Mais dès 2007, un nouveau départ est donné avec l’arrivée de Grand Large Yachting.

Depuis, près de 400 catamarans Outremer ont navigué sur toutes les mers du globe, permettant à des couples et des familles de réaliser leurs rêves. Les Outremer sont devenus la référence mondiale incontestée du grand voyage.
