THE SIX ISLANDS OF HAWAII

KAUAI

Kauai is one of the six stunning islands to be explored on a Hawaii luxury charter yacht. Visit the charming and historic small towns like Hanapepe and Koloa, where no construction is taller than a coconut tree. Discover the soaring cliffs of the Napali Coast or the vast Waimea Canyon.

Oahu represents a blend of modern luxuries of today with a timeless beauty of the surrounding nature. Enjoy a great swim in the warm waters of the world-renowned Waikiki or enjoy the dramatic mountain views of the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. Or you could simply lay back and watch the surfers on the famous North Shore. For some excitement and night entertainment, visit Honolulu.

MOLOKAI

Sailing to Molokai on your Hawaii yacht rental vacation you will be greeted by unspoiled coastlines, serene seascapes and untamed wilderness. Hidden from the hustle of the outside world, Molokai stays true to its Hawaiian traditions. This island is a true paradise, ideal for a quiet escape as well as great outdoor adventures.

The romantic island of Lanai represents a true getaway destination of untouched tranquility and beauty. Lanai also offers two high-caliber golf courses, making this island a must visit destination for golf enthusiasts.

MAUI

Voted the ‘Best Island’ by Conde Nast Traveler for a number of years, Maui offers divine beaches and picturesque natural wonders. Discover this wonderful island strolling the seaside streets of Lahaina or relaxing on the pristine beaches of Kaanapali. Visit Haleakala National Park or enjoy a good game of golf thanks to the championship golf courses. It is of no surprise that humpback whales migrate to Maui’s warm waters each year!

HAWAII ISLAND

Hawaii Island is big … and continuously growing. It is the home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes - Kilauea, Maunakea - the tallest sea mountain in the world, Maunaloa - the most massive mountain in the world, as well as the largest park in the state known as the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Island of Hawaii offers its yacht charter visitors a great choice of activities and places to discover, from lovely romantic gateways to journeys off the beaten track.

Yacht Charter in Hawaii

Hawaii yacht charter.

The islands of Hawaii seem to have been made for the gods. With amazing beaches, a climate of endless sunny days, and miles and miles of coastlines, Hawaii is simply a paradise destination. With eight main islands, there are plenty to choose from for an unforgettable yacht charter experience. Located on the centre of the Pacific, the waters of Hawaii are simply perfect for multiple days of island-hopping adventures, or full-day trips on one of the islands. For a more immersive experience, a multi-island yacht charter is a definite must in Hawaii.

Why charter a yacht in Hawaii?

If you want to experience the real gist of Hawaii, spending a vacation on one island is not enough. A yacht charter can bring you to the archipelago's best spots, the most amazing natural beauty, and a world of water adventures that can only be experienced with a boat. Your captain can bring you to many of these islands' secret spots, as you enjoy the spoils of the natural wonders that abound. From swimming to snorkelling, windsurfing, to fishing, to diving, Hawaii's waters are genuinely one of the best places on earth for the ultimate yacht charter holiday.

What are yacht charter prices in Hawaii?

A catamaran is the ideal type of yacht in Hawaiian waters because the ocean waters are subject to swells. A catamaran offers stability in such conditions. Nevertheless, motor yachts are still as great on the seas of Hawaii. A typical 71-foot motor yacht can cost about $60,000 for a week's rent in Hawaii. This kind of boat can accommodate a group of 6 people with three cabins on board. A catamaran is perfect for a day tour in any of the Hawaiian islands. A 48-foot catamaran can cost around $3,000 for a full day yacht charter. And lastly, a sailing catamaran with a length of 46 feet can cost around $2,500 for a full day's charter.

When is the yachting season in Hawaii?

The months of May to October are perfect for yacht charters in Hawaii. Having a subtropical climate, the summer months have the best weather and the lowest humidity. The months of November, December, and January is the rainy season in Hawaii, but also the ideal months for surf charters. These are the months that the waves are pumping, and much favoured by professional surfers.

Hawaii yacht charter for a day

A day yacht charter in Hawaii can be a great way to spend time on ocean waters and away from the cosmopolitan vibe of Honolulu. A charter around Maunalua Bay presents you with opportunities to visit and witness and the scenery of Koko Head, Diamond Head, and the Hanauma Bay Ridge. A day charter can include swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, surfing, or simply lounging on the boat as you cruise along the volcanic islands.

Hawaii yacht charter overnight

The West Coast of Oahu offers the best coast for an overnight yacht charter in Hawaii. It presents you a chance to escape the city life for a relaxing cruise along the beach, and of course, visiting coastal towns and enjoying a plethora of water sports activities on the bays. Head to Pokai Bay and enjoy swimming and snorkelling before you spend the night on this safe anchorage. In the morning, have breakfast on the waters of Yokohama Bay, where you can enjoy the secluded and tranquil beach for the rest of your morning. You can also visit Haleiwa town before making your way back to Honolulu. This historic town is the perfect example of old Hawaii mixed with the new Hawaiian atmosphere.

Hawaii yacht charter for a week

A week-long yacht charter in Hawaii can offer you a multi-island liveaboard where you can discover some of the archipelago’s most beautiful spots. Visit the islands of Molokai, Maui, and Lanai from your base in Oahu.

Day 1-2: Oahu

Spend your first two days cruising along the coasts of Oahu. The West end is perfect for snorkelling, possible encounters with dolphins, and cruising along Kaneohe Bay. You can also head to Waikiki Beach, which is the most popular in Oahu, and one of the top beaches in the world. Spend your day here shopping at the waterfront, dining on the seaside restaurants, sunbathing and swimming on the beach, and thoroughly enjoying the quintessential Hawaiian beach.

Days 3-4: Molokai

Visit Kaunakakai, which is the only town in Molokai and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of this beautiful island. Head to the Kalaupapa Peninsula, the Papohaku Beach, and the North Shore, which has the highest sea cliffs in the world, with peaks rising out of the water up to 3,000 feet. A sight to behold, cruising along this coast is a must in your Molokai yacht charter itinerary.

Days 5- 6: Lanai

The island of Lanai offers a tranquil yacht charter experience. Head to Hulopoe Bay Marine Sanctuary Beach and enjoy a day of swimming and snorkelling and BBQ on the beach. Visit the famed Garden of the Gods, as well as the remote Shipwreck Bay. Rent a 4x4 and explore the island’s beautiful scenery or hike through the trails and revel in the magnificent views rewarded to you once you reach the peak.

Day 7-8: Maui

Maui is one of Hawaii's most popular destinations. Visit Lahaina, which is a historic whaling village known for its shopping, art galleries, and restaurants. Head over to Honolua Bay before the sun sets and spend your night here, which is a great anchorage on the northwest coast. On your last day, you can either disembark in Maui, head to the island of Hawaii or make your way back to Oahu.

Wedding yacht charter in Hawaii

Hawaii is an idyllic island paradise, and there's nothing more romantic than spending your wedding and honeymoon here all at the same time. While Hawaii is famous as a tourist destination, a wedding yacht charter can provide you with privacy and exclusivity that can't be met at a 5-star resort. On a yacht charter, you and your guests can have the boat all to yourself as you cruise along the waters of Waikiki beach and experience the beauty of Honolulu's starry skyline at night. Or, if you want an intimate wedding with just the two of you, your boat captain can officiate the wedding with the crew as your witnesses, then have a romantic dinner for two on deck as the sun sets, then cruise your way to your honeymoon destination right after.

Surfing yacht charter in Hawaii

During the months of November to January, surfers flock to Hawaii for the excellent surf and swells. Surfing charters bring guests to the best spots in Hawaii, as well as secret surf spots that only locals know. However, for beginners, or for those who want to surf for the first time, plenty of spots are found across the islands. Some of these spots are in Waikiki, in Oahu; Lemon Drop, Kiahuna Plantation, and PK's in Kauai, and Hanalei Bay. On Hawaii island, the coast of Kona is ideal for beginner surfers. A surfing charter can include a qualified and licensed surf instructor on board, where you can hop from one surf spot to another, and learn the sport without sacrificing comfort and luxury.

Hawaii is the ultimate yacht charter definition with a multitude of itineraries to experience. With so many islands and natural beauty to explore, a yacht charter in Hawaii is simply the ideal way to visit the stunning volcanic islands in the middle of the Pacific.

Guide to Hawaii

Say Aloha to the paradise islands of Hawaii

Just by breathing the words, Hawaii evokes images of heavenly beaches, endless sunny days and copious palm trees, whilst the reality boasting all of this and more. Far removed from any continent by 2,000 miles, the Hawaiian Islands are an idyllic destination for yacht charters and are becoming increasingly popular for those seeking a holiday of a lifetime.

Laced like jewels in the Pacific Ocean , Hawaii boasts eight main emerald islands, each one as ruggedly beautiful as the next. Although an idyllic location for a secluded yacht charter, Hawaii is located in the centre of the Pacific meaning venturing to the islands is not for anyone unsteady on their sea legs. The ocean waters can be subjected to swells so a sturdy vessel such as a catamaran is ideal for a Hawaiian yacht charter. With a warm climate all year round and warm people to match, Hawaii promises one heavenly day to the next. Although one of the youngest American states, Hawaii has a preceding reputation of sun, sea and sand which exceeds expectation upon arrival.

With a variety of glorious islands to explore, a yacht charter provides the perfect opportunity to hop from one to the next, discovering some of Hawaii’s untold secrets along the way. From Kauai to the “Big Island” of Hawaii, there is a plethora of sights to see and memories to be made. Nicknamed as the “Garden Isle”, Kauai boasts tropical rainforests, towering cliffs and sugar white sandy beaches. To the west side of the island, the Waimea Canyon is an unmissable sight. Often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, this breathtaking geological wonder offers stunning panoramic views with copious trails to trek whether you’re a novice or experienced hiker. The bustling streets of Oahu are great for shopping and dining ashore whilst the volcanic landmark, Diamond Head, is a remarkable scene. Revel in the historical impact of Pearl Harbour before venturing to Molokai. Deemed as the most traditional Hawaiian Island in the isolated archipelago and often referred to as “the Friendly Island”, Molokai is renowned for being laid back and relaxed, combining the opportunity to do as much or as little as you please. From water sports, whale watching and sport fishing to reading a book under a palm tree, the choice is all yours. The island of Lanai is untouched and tranquil with miles of sun kissed shoreline for that ‘get away from it all’ feel whereas sightseeing at Keahiakawlo is a one of a kind experience. Renowned as the “Garden of the Gods”, this location transforms into an enchanting sight at dusk as the setting sun casts a warm orange glow on the rocks, illuminating this fascinating rock garden in brilliant shades of red and purple.

Meander from one isle to another, sightseeing, sun bathing and sampling cuisine. Maui offers heavenly beaches, tumbling waterfalls and quaint small towns. Keep an eye out for the humpback whales that migrate here every year and don’t leave until you have experienced the awe-inspiring volcanoes at Haleakala National Park. Last but certainly not least, no charter to Hawaii would be complete without a final stop off at the “Big Island”, aptly named Hawaii Island. By day, gaze in admiration at Kilauea within Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park, witness the tallest sea mountain, Mauna Kea and sip on the famous Kona coffee before paying a well-earned visit to Hapuna beach, often deemed as one of the best beaches in the world.  As the sun sets, watch out for the glittering stars which dazzle like a diamond chandelier in the clear night sky.

Hawaii encompasses vast expressions of nature, lush vegetation and divine landmarks, which come together to complete this natural wonderland. With so much to explore, admire and adore, Hawaii exceeds every expectation.

An unforgettable experience.

The Via Mia is a fully restored antique yacht located in Honolulu, Hawaii. The worldly 61-foot wooden yacht was constructed in 1929 in Stockton, California. Built for luxury, she traveled the world before crossing the ocean to Hawai‘i where she currently resides in beautiful Waikiki.

If her teak could speak, Vida Mia would not only tell stories about movie stars and politicians who enjoyed her lap of luxury basking in the sunsets off Waikiki, but of the countless grand times of families and friends who created lifetime memories aboard this gorgeous, iconic vessel.

The Vida Mia has been on the silver screen starring in movies dating all the way back to the 50's.

Nearly everyone you meet on the island has a story of an event or adventure on the Vida Mia.

She had made Hawaii home for over 60 years.

The Vida Mia is an exclusive experience that our guests remember for years.

Nothing pleases us more than sharing the Vida Mia with new friends.

Over the years, we have built a community of visitors, travelers, and local residents.

The Vida Mia works exclusively with local artists, vendors, and craftsmen. From musicians to our local coffee farmers and fisherman, we strive to build a community around the boat.  All of the food served on the boat is sourced locally.

The Vida Mia served her country during World War II. She arrived in Hawai‘i after serving as an unofficial escort of the famed Transpacific sailing race in 1963, although it’s said perhaps the Transpacific racing fleet was really escorting her.

There is only one Vida Mia.

Our experienced maritime staff has traveled the world restoring and preserving old sailing vessels and has extensive experience with classic yachts and wooden boats.

We take great pride as stewards of this historic vessel.  Our staff is hands-on and personable. We have a loyal customer base here in Hawaii.

Vida Mia has been a beloved part of the Hawaii island harbor community for many years.

Come experience the Vida Mia. There is no other boat like her.

When you book Vida Mia know you are supporting many other small businesses here in our community.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

We are conveniently located near all the major hotels in Honolulu. We share the harbor with the nearby Prince Waikiki , Ilikai Hotel , and the Hilton Hawaiian Village . If you are staying at the Royal Hawaiian , Outrigger Waikiki, or Sheraton Waikiki we are a short 10-15 minute walk along the beach. Many of our hotel guests take a morning stroll over to the harbor or rent a Biki bike at one of their kiosks. There is a nice bike path along the beach; you can catch it right at the end of Lewers Street or take the scenic route and cut through the path at the Hale Koa Hotel .

For guests staying on other parts of the island, we offer transportation recommendations.

There is ample parking near the vessel. Parking in the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor is convenient and affordable.

We recommend shared rides or taxi service for cruises that depart on Friday evenings.

Hawaii Yacht Charters

Famous for its massive volcanoes and sea teeming with marine life, Hawaii offers an incomparable yachting experience. What better way to experience this tropical oasis than on your private charter yacht? Introducing Noelani, the 75-foot (22.86m) Sunseeker Predator, aka your ticket to paradise. Experience 360-degree views of the most striking natural landscapes in the world.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

To put it simply, Noelani is the largest, most luxurious motor yacht in the Hawaiian Islands. For those not familiar with boats, the Sunseeker Predator 75’ (22.86 m) is a highly sought-after yacht that is rarely on the market. Sailing the beautiful Hawaiian waters on a yacht of this caliber is an unforgettable experience.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

Noelani is an exceptionally spacious yacht. She features three ample staterooms, a full galley, and accommodations for up to 6 overnight guests. Combined with two 12-cylinder twin-turbocharged, 1300 horsepower engines with a top speed of 36 knots, getting you to your destination significantly faster than your average charter yacht. For the foodies onboard, Noelani comes equipped with your very own private chef. Itching for some classic Hawaiian cuisine? No problem… whether you’re feeling a plate of oceanside poke or classic Luna stew, your chef will be ready and waiting to serve you. Private yacht charters aboard Noelani were designed to be the best experience of your life. Nowhere else in Hawaii can you get a personal masseuse, chef, professional crew, and chauffeured limousine all in one. In total, Hawaii is made up of 137 tropical islands. Of these islands, several of them have grown to become some of the most notorious vacation destinations in the world.

Kauai is a lush and tropical island best known as the “Garden Isle.” Kauai lies 105 miles (169 km) across the Kauai Channel, northwest of Oahu. Home to the famous Waimea Canyon State Park, Kauai offers some of the most incredible natural landscapes in the world. Massive mountains covered in lush green landscaping, it’s no wonder over 1.5 million tourists visit the island each year (according to the County of Kauai Office of Economic Development).

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

For the perfect day in Kauai, begin the morning by waking up in your comfy queen-sized bed aboard Noelani. Allow your private chef to prepare the breakfast of your dreams while you sip on a fresh cup of coffee. The spread of locally-grown fruit is sure to refresh you from your slumber. Then head to the mainland for a private tour of Waimea Canyon State Park. Also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, Waimea Canyon State Park features stunning red soil that can be seen from miles away. The panoramic views of crested buttes, rugged crags, and deep valley gorges go on for miles. For the adventure seekers, take a hike through these mountains and experience nature at your fingertips. Then head back to the yacht for a sunset dinner cruise. With Noelani, the possibilities are truly endless.

Oahu is known as “the gathering place” of Hawaii. Third largest of the Hawaiian Islands, Oahu is home to over one million people (roughly two-thirds of the entire Hawaiian population). The diamond-shaped island is surrounded by the ocean and divided by enormous mountain ranges. Due to the high rate of precipitation in Oahu, many mountains are blanketed in bright green plants. A tourism and shopping haven, roughly five million people visit Oahu each year.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

As you wake up on the North shore, go for a morning smoothie at the sunrise shack, famous for their fresh fruit smoothies, açai bowls, and of course, coffee. When it comes to things to do in Oahu, there is no shortage of activities. For a bird’s eye view of Oahu, take a private helicopter ride for less than $300 per person. Imagine seeing the enormous rock formations from thousands of feet above the ground. A view like this is truly priceless. When you’re ready for lunch, allow your crew to prepare a beachside lunch with a local assortment of seafood. When you’re done with the picnic, head back to the yacht and take a nap on the sundeck. Rest on the cozy couch cushions as you read a good book in the sun. When the sun sets, take some pictures with your family to remember your vacation.

Molokai is 38-miles of lush greenery and sapphire water. Molokai’s northern Kalaupapa Peninsula is a steep, winding path that leads to Kalaupapa National Historical Park. What used to be an isolated leper colony below the towering cliffs, Kalaupapa National Historical Park is a beautiful place to go hiking. The striking ocean views are truly a sight to see. To visit Kalaupapa National Historical Park, you must obtain a permit. This strict policy keeps the park protected while honoring those who have lived there in the past.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

For the perfect day in Molokai, begin your day with a local fruit smoothie. Relax on the sundeck with family and friends as your captain gives you an exclusive tour of the different islands around Molokai. See the giant rock formations and towering cliffs all from the comfort of your yacht. Offering some of the highest cliffs in the world, it only makes sense to go for a hike. Visit Papohaku Beach, one of Hawaii’s largest white-sand beaches. These secluded beaches make you feel like you are on your private island. Thanks to your private yacht, go to the most remote beaches in all of Hawaii anytime you want. Spend the afternoon going kayaking while watching the sunset. Then enjoy a tiki-lit dinner on the beach before heading back to the yacht for bed.

Lanai is the sixth-largest of the Hawaiian Islands. Lanai is known as Hawaii’s ‘most enticing island.” Just a short 9 miles from Maui is a world of ultra-luxurious resorts, secluded beaches, and incredible golfing. If any of these activities are of interest to you, we suggest checking out this slice of heaven. Lanai features over 89,000 acres of countryside. According to tourists, this island is perfect for going off the grid.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

For being a small island, Lanai sure has plenty of activities to keep you busy. Begin your day with a breakfast on the sundeck before heading to Lanai for a resort spa day. Relax at one of the many luxurious resorts featured on the island. If you prefer to stay moving, go for a game of golf at Manele Golf Course. If you choose to spend the day by the water, Lanai has incredible snorkeling and fishing.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

Head back to the yacht for an exclusive snorkeling experience you can only get from the seclusion of your private yacht. Share your vacation with close family and friends with the privacy of your yacht. When the sun goes down, feast your eyes (and your tastebuds) on a Mai Tai brighter than the Hawaiian sunset.

The second-largest of the Hawaiian Islands, Maui is known as “The Valley Isle” of Hawaii. Locals say “Maui no ka oi Maui no ka oi” meaning, Maui is the best. Rightfully so, the island is packed with world-famous spots. The landscape of Maui is extremely diverse. Black sand beaches, bright green mountains, and massive waterfalls can all be found (and explored) in Maui. When it comes to Hawaiian volcanoes, Maui is no exception. Each volcanic formation is made of iron-rich rocks. Maui’s diverse landscape and stunning scenery make it the perfect island to explore.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

Wake up gently, perhaps with a cup of tea or lemon water, as you watch the striking Hawaiian sunrise. As the sun begins to rise, you notice the mountains standing proudly in the distance. You’ve made it to Maui. Begin the day with a boat ride around the island. Feast your eyes on the famous Hana Highway. This 64.4-mile-long road stretches from Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. See the striking mountains and black sand beaches from the comfort of your yacht. The view from a car simply cannot compare to the view from the ocean. When you’re ready to go on land, let your captain drop you off at the quaint village of Lahaina for some shopping and authentic Hawaiian coffee. Enjoy the stunning mountain scenery before making your way to the wharf where Noelani, your charter yacht, will take you out for a whale-watching cruise. Then head back to Maui for an afternoon tour of the island. Visit the Maui waterfalls, go for a hike, or walk around the Maui Gardens. Maui is full of endless opportunities for adventure.

Island of Hawai’i

The Island of Hawai’i is the largest island located in all of Hawaii. While the island encompasses over 4,028 square miles of land, only 13% of the Hawaiian population lives here. The largest city on The Island of Hawai’i is Hilo. Hilo is home to beautiful beaches such as the famous James Kealoha Beach. The Island of Hawaii is home to the world’s tallest mountain, Mauna Kea. Measured from its seafloor base to its highest peak, Mauna Kea is the world’s tallest mountain, taller than even Mount Everest, since the base of Mount Everest is above sea level. For more than a century, the backbone of Hawai’i’s economy was sugarcane. However, in the mid 20th century, the sugarcane plantations began to close. Today, Hawai’i’s largest economic sector tourism.

Hawaii Yacht Charter, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Lanai, Maui

The perfect day on the island of Hawai’i begins with breakfast on the yacht. Once breakfast is over, have your captain take you to some of the most remote locations in all of Hawaii. Soak up the sun on your private beach or get a personal tour of the gigantic rock formations around the island. Watch as the lava oozes from the side of the mountain before pouring into the cold pacific waters. Get up-close and personal with the Hawaiian shoreline and see what landlocked individuals can’t. This is just one of the many advantages of the Noelani charter experience. When your exclusive tour of the Hawaiian coastline is over, head to the mainland for a rainforest hike. See the cascading Rainbow waterfalls or visit the steamy hot springs. Notorious for its sunny weather, the west side of the island features many golf courses, whale watching, and more. When the sun begins to set, enjoy a candle-lit dinner on a remote beach. Finally, go for an exhilarating manta ray night dive on the west side of the big island. Here you will find massive manta rays attracted by plankton, which in turn are attracted by bright lights. To catch the plankton the manta rays filter it out of the ocean by swooping through the water with their mouths open before gracefully swimming through the light beams, sometimes almost touching their spectators. This natural phenomenon is truly a sight to see. Then head back to the yacht for a relaxing night of wine drinking and stargazing before heading to bed.

Hawaiian Bliss

Your private yacht vacation is sure to tailor your every need. Aboard Noelani, the Hawaiian Islands are your oyster. Whether you choose to sit back and relax aboard the yacht or hike through the mountains in Hilo, we guarantee a blissful charter experience full of great memories to last forever.

The Most Beautiful Island on Earth

Rent a boat in Hawaii to experience these islands the way they were originally discovered. Hawaii is one of the furthest pieces of land from anywhere. This paradise was miraculously discovered by unparalleled Polynesian sailors, and later Captain Cook. This island chain is over a thousand miles long, and is a series of volcanos created over eons as the earth’s crust moved over a hot spot deep below. The main Island volcanos are still active, sometimes spectacularly so.

Many unique marine life, flora, and birdlife evolved in this splendid isolation. The main island is the tallest mountain on earth as measured from the sea floor. Environments range from desert to Jungle to snowcapped peaks.

Charter a Boat in Hawaii!

Chartering a boat in hawaii shouldn’t be a difficult process, but with the incr ease in tour companies and everything seemingly returning to normal post covid… it seems to have become a muddied process.

In general, private charter yacht experiences can offer a more personalized and exclusive experience than some other types of boat tours. We cover the main differences between a Shared & Private Charter  in depth, but some benefits of private charter yacht tours may include the ability to customize the itinerary, choose the departure time, and have a more intimate group size. Additionally, private charter yachts often come equipped with a variety of amenities, such as comfortable seating, private bathrooms, and catering options, which may not be available on all boat tours.

When considering between a boat tour and a private charter yacht experience, it would be best to research and compare the various options available to you in order to determine which company may be the best fit for your needs and preferences. Some factors you may want to consider when comparing private charter yacht companies include the size and amenities of the yacht, the reputation of the company, the flexibility and customization of the tour, and the price.

Here are a few best practices to charter the right boat in Hawaii!

  • Determine your budget and the type of experience you are looking for: A boat to yourself? Or a boat with 70 other people? Consider how much you are willing to spend and what type of experience you want to have (e.g., sightseeing, fishing, snorkeling). This will help narrow down your options and make it easier to find a charter that fits your needs.
  • Research and compare different charter companies: Look for companies that operate in the area you are interested in and that offer the type of experience you are looking for. Read reviews and ask for recommendations from friends or locals to help find a reputable company.
  • Contact the charter company to inquire about availability, food choices, and pricing: Once you have identified a few companies that you are interested in, contact them to ask about availability and pricing for the dates you are considering. Be sure to ask about any additional fees or costs that may not be included in the initial quote.
  • Review the terms and conditions of the charter: Before booking, make sure to review the terms and conditions of the charter, including the cancellation policy and any requirements or restrictions that may apply.
  • Book the charter: Once you have found a charter that meets your needs and you are comfortable with the terms and conditions, you can proceed with booking the charter. It is generally a good idea to book in advance to ensure that you get the dates you want.

Keep in mind that the specific process for chartering a boat in Hawaii may vary depending on the company you choose. It is always a good idea to do your research and ask any questions you may have before booking to ensure that you have a smooth and enjoyable experience!

Florida beaches open after shark attacks injure woman, 2 teens. What we know

Two teenagers and a woman were injured in two shark attacks less than two hours apart Friday afternoon in the Florida Panhandle. The woman lost her lower left arm and suffered "significant trauma" to other areas of her body, officials said at a Friday afternoon news conference. The mother of one of the teens said the girl's hand had been taken and her right leg had to be amputated .

Both incidents happened between Miramar Beach and Panama City Beach on the Gulf of Mexico.

Beaches in Walton and Bay counties were closed Friday and reopened Saturday morning , with warnings. The Walton County Sheriff's Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife monitored the shoreline by boat through the weekend. Panama City Beach Police in the Sheriff's Office helicopter Saturday reported seeing " a notable presence of sharks , specifically bull sharks," near the first incident.

"We want to reiterate that sharks are always present in the Gulf ," the WCSO said in a Facebook post . "Swimmers and beachgoers should be cautious when swimming and be aware of their surroundings at all times."

What happened in the shark attacks in Walton County, Florida?

At about 1:20 p.m. Friday, a 45-year-old woman was swimming with her husband past the first sandbar near Founders Lane in Watersound Beach, west of Seacrest Beach when she was bitten.

"She received significant trauma to the midsection and pelvic area," said South Walton Fire District Fire Chief Ryan Crawford at a press conference Friday , "as well as amputation of the left lower arm."

About an hour and a half later, just before 3 p.m., two girls aged 15 and 17 were swimming with friends and looking for sand dollars in waist-deep water near the Sandy Shores Court area of Seacrest Beach, about four miles east of the first bite. The girls were swimming just inside the first sandbar, Crawford said, in a similar proximity to the shoreline as the previous attack.

"Victim one received significant injuries to one upper and one lower extremity," Crawford said. "Victim number two received what's been described as flesh wounds to the right lower extremity."

How are the Florida shark attack victims? What are their conditions?

A teenager, Lulu Gribbin of Alabama, was treated on the scene by first responders and taken via helicopter to HCA Fort Walton-Destin Hospital. She is in critical condition with severe injuries, including the loss of her lower left arm.

The girl's mother, Ann Blair Gribbon, said on a platform for hospital patients that the teen's left hand was bitten off and a leg had to be amputated. She'll likely need at least five more surgeries to finalize the amputations, Gribbon said, but the girl's vitals were improving by Saturday and hospital staff was able to remove her breathing tube.

"This was a first big step," Ann Gribbin wrote. "Once she was settled her first words to us were 'I made it.'

The 45-year-old woman lost a hand to the shark bite and suffered trauma to her midsection and pelvic region, officials said. She was in critical condition Friday.

Several beachgoers had medical training, Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson, and at least two were nurses. "Those folks jumped in and started rendering care and help," he said, as the deputy and South Walton crew arrived.

Adkinson said he and Crawford decided to close the beaches for a couple of miles around the first attack. But before that was put into place, the second one occurred.

The other girl was taken to Ascension Bay Medical Center in Panama City Beach. She was in stable condition with flesh wounds to her lower right extremity.

Why did a shark or sharks bite people swimming in Walton County?

The precise cause is unknown. Most of the time when a shark bites a human being , it's because it was curious about the splashing in the water or startled by a swimmer or surfer crossing its path. Some sharks may bite to protect an area, similar to a dog barking at people in his yard. Shark bites, while potentially horrific, remain rare .

Panama City Beach police reported seeing a number of bull sharks near the sandbar by the first incident. Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford said in a release that, according to the FWC, "bait fish are schooling near the shore at this time of year, which may have been a contributing factor in the attacks."

Destin charter boat Capt. Gary Jarvis told The Northwest Florida Daily News that there are more sharks in the Gulf of Mexico than there have been for years.

“There are more people that swim in the water than before and there are more sharks in the water than ever before. So, the incident rate of shark bites is only going to go in one direction,” Jarvis said.

Where did the Florida shark attacks happen? Where is Watersound Beach?

Watersound Beach is a community along the coast of South Walton between Seacrest Beach and Seagrove Beach.

Where is Seacrest Beach, Florida?

Seacrest Beach is farther to the east along Highway 30-A.

Are beaches open today in Walton County, Florida, after shark attacks?

Beaches were reopened Saturday morning with single red and purple flags flying, indicating hazardous water conditions and possible dangerous marine life are present.

As of Monday morning , yellow flags are flying in Walton County, indicating moderate surf and/or currents.

Are beaches open today in Bay County, Florida?

Neighboring Bay County also closed its beaches Friday and reopened them Saturday morning with single red and purple flags flying.

As of Monday morning , Panama City Beach continues to fly these flags indicating high hazard surf conditions and dangerous marine life, which means swimming is allowed but you swim at your own risk and should use extreme caution.

How many shark attacks have there been in Florida this year?

According to  trackingsharks.com , the incidents in Walton County are the first three shark-related incidents in Florida in 2024. There are usually around 100 bites reported worldwide per year, the site said.

How many shark bites were there worldwide in 2023?

The Florida Museum of Natural History’s  International Shark Attack File  investigated 120 alleged shark-human interactions worldwide in 2023.  Sixty-nine were confirmed as unprovoked shark bites  on humans and 22 were found to be provoked bites.

Breakdown of 2023 reports around the world:

  • Unprovoked bites: 69
  • Provoked bites: 22
  • Boat bites: 9
  • Scavenge: 2 (post-mortem bites)

  • No assignment could be made: 1
  • Not confirmed: 16

Florida remains shark bite capital of the US

Florida continues to be the No. 1 location for the number of shark bites.

There were 16 bites — although none were fatal — confirmed in 2023. That's lower than Florida's historic average of 19 incidents a year.

  • Florida:  16 bites, none fatal
  • Hawaii:  8 bites, 1 fatal
  • New York:  4 bites, none fatal
  • California:  2 bites, 1 fatal
  • North Carolina:  3 bites, none fatal
  • South Carolina:  2 bites, none fatal
  • New Jersey:  1 bite, none fatal

Top 10: Confirmed unprovoked shark attacks in Florida from 1882 to present

  • Volusia County: 351
  • Brevard County: 158
  • Palm Beach County: 83
  • St. Johns County: 45
  • Duval County: 46
  • Martin County: 41
  • St. Lucie County: 39
  • Indian River County: 22
  • Monroe County: 21
  • Miami-Dade County: 20

How do I avoid shark bites?

  • Swim with a buddy. Most sharks are more likely to approach a solitary person.
  • Stay close to shore.
  • Be careful around the area between sandbars or near steep dropoffs, both popular shark hangouts.
  • Stay out of the water at dawn or dusk when sharks are more active and feeding.
  • Avoid shiny jewelry or reflective swimwear that might resemble the sheen of fish scales.
  • Avoid areas where people are fishing or areas with known effluents or sewage. Stay away from areas with diving seabirds.
  • Be careful in murky water. Some shark species may not see you very well either, and there can be confusion.
  • Try not to splash too much, especially in a single spot. Sharks may investigate to see if you are a fish in distress.
  • If a shark is spotted, slowly and calmly get out of the water.

Louisiana Private Recreational Red Snapper Landing Estimates Through June 2

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) released the latest private recreational Red Snapper landing estimates through June 2, 2024. LA Creel, LDWF's near real-time landings data collection program, indicates that 301,658 pounds, or 32.3% percent, of Louisiana’s 2024 annual private recreational allocation of 934,587 pounds have been harvested during the 2024 Red Snapper season.

The private recreational Red Snapper season began Monday, April 15, in both state and federal waters, running seven days a week with a daily bag limit of four fish per person and a 16-inch total length minimum size limit. The season will remain open until recreational landings approach or reach Louisiana's allocation.

For more information on the 2024 Red Snapper season and detailed landing estimates, visit  https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/red-snapper .

Resident and Non-Resident Recreational Anglers:

  • Must possess valid Louisiana basic and Saltwater Recreational Fishing Licenses and a  Recreational Offshore Landing Permit (no cost) to fish for or possess Red Snapper and other offshore and reef fish species.
  • Anglers get a ROLP via the  ROLP website :  https://ldwf.wlf.la.gov/rolp/loginchoice?ReturnUrl=%2Frolp
  • Once anglers have registered, they can save an electronic copy on their mobile device or print a copy of the ROLP indicating their valid ROLP and carry it on their person along with applicable licenses while fishing offshore.

State For-Hire Charter Vessels:

  • State for-hire charter captains (those who do not have a federal Gulf of Mexico charter/headboat permit for reef fish) are not allowed to fish in federal waters.
  • Must also possess a ROLP (no cost) to fish for or possess Red Snapper, as well as other offshore and reef fish species.
  • May only fish for Red Snapper in state waters (within the 9 nautical miles state water boundary), when the Louisiana recreational Red Snapper season is open.

Federal For-Hire Charter Vessels:

  • Vessels with federal reef fish for-hire permits will remain under federal regulations and may only fish in federal waters during the federal season, which will open June 1.
  • If a federal for-hire charter captain also holds a Louisiana charter license, he/she may also fish state waters, but only when the federal for-hire charter season overlaps with the Louisiana season. When the federal for-hire season closes, the federal for-hire captain may not fish state waters.

LDWF encourages anglers to reduce barotrauma while fishing for Red Snapper and other reef fish by using descending devices to return fish to a survivable depth before being released. Please see the LDWF website at  https://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/page/barotrauma  for more information. Federal regulations require that anglers have a descending device or venting tool rigged and ready for use while fishing for reef fish in federal waters.

A man jumps into Lake Michigan with the Chicago skyline behind him

The Chicago heat is no joke this year. Here are some tried and true ways to stay cool in the city — and the suburbs — this summer.

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Hot? Here's a guide to how to cool off in the water, from public and private pools to water parks to paddle board rentals

These are the best ways to stay cool right now without spending too much or going too far..

There really is nothing like summertime, but now the temperatures are here and you may find yourself looking for some respite. One tried-and-true way to stay cool through this heat wave is diving into the water, from jumping in the lake to learning a new skill such as sailing or paddleboarding.

Here are eight ways to soak up the cool without spending too much or going too far:

1. Find a pool to jump into

The Chicago Park District manages 50 outdoor pools across the city, along with 27 indoor pools. The city’s outdoor pools opened Monday and close just before Chicago Public Schools resume in August, according to the park district. Open swim is free, while lap swimming requires a membership ($25 for one month or $42 for three months).

Single day pool passes for purchase

  • Some Chicago hotels sell day passes to their pools. At the InterContinental, a day pass to enjoy one of the oldest pools in the city is $40 for adults and $25 for kids. The pass also includes access to the hotel’s sauna and fitness center. 505 N. Michigan Ave.
  • The Robey in Wicker Park sells day passes to its Cabana Club, a rooftop bar that has a small pool — better suited for a quick dip than a full pool day. Adult tickets are $15 during the week and $30 on the weekends (kids are $10 any day of the week) and include access to amenities such as Wi-Fi, towel service, a welcome drink and more. 2018 W. North Ave.
  • Some gyms, like Life Time at One Chicago, also offer a day pass for $50 , which includes pool access. 15 W. Chicago Ave.

Suburban water parks with nonresident passes

  • Orland Park’s Centennial Park Aquatic Center has water slides and a lazy river. Day passes for non-Orland Park residents are $25 Monday–Thursday and $26 on weekends and holidays. 15600 West Ave, Orland Park.
  • The Heritage Park Family Aquatic Center in Wheeling is a massive outdoor water park featuring large, faux rock structures and waterfalls. There are diving boards, a sand play area and waterslides. Day passes are $15, and kids younger than 2 get in free. 105 Community Blvd., Wheeling.
  • One of the largest water parks in the area, Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center in Des Plaines, has multiple water slides, cliff dives and a zero-depth pool to soak in. General admission is $20 for adults, and $17.75 for kids 17 and younger and seniors 60 and older. 2025 Miner St., Des Plaines.

Millennium Park's Crown Fountain

Millennium Park’s Crown Fountain offers a way to stay cool while experiencing public art.

2. Play at a splash pad

From June to August, dozens of local parks offer spray features — AKA splash pads — that are perfect for the young (and young at heart) to cool off on a hot day.

Perhaps the most visible splash pad in the city is the Crown Fountain in Millennium Park , which includes two 50-foot towers with a shallow pool in between. Designed by artist Jaume Plensa, the fountain is a boost to both public art and a welcome chance to cool off. 201 E. Randolph St.

The city also has a handful of water playgrounds , many of which are adjacent to outdoor swimming pools.

3. Take a trip to the beach

One of the best — and easiest — ways to cool off in the summertime is to hop in Lake Michigan. With 26 miles of lakefront access to enjoy, there is no shortage of options. The city’s beach season runs through Labor Day.

Some favorites include:

  • Montrose Beach , where there’s a dog-friendly beach and ample bird watching alike. Montrose is also Chicago’s only beach that allows kiteboarding. 4400 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • Ohio Street Beach , which offers lockers for swimmers to protect their belongings. Whether just taking a dip or training for the triathlon, bring your own lock. 600 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • Margaret T. Burroughs Beach — AKA, 31st Street Beach — boasts some of the best views of the skyline. 3100 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive .
  • Promontory Point in Hyde Park has lake access and trails for walking or biking. Check out this full WBEZ guide to the park . 5491 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • 63rd Street Beach is one of Chicago’s largest beaches and also features one of the city’s biggest and oldest beach houses, which was completed in 1919. The beach also has a nonmotorized boat launch. 6300 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

4. Rent a boat

Whether on the river or the lake, getting out on a boat is the perfect way to enjoy a summer day. Luckily, there are so many options, from the adventurous to the laid back.

Chicago Electric Boat Company ’s diverse fleet of boats ranges from comfortable cruisers such as the Duffy electric boats (rentals from $155), which are prime for sitting back and relaxing with drinks and snacks on the water; to modern classics like the Retro Boats, which are refurbished and retrofitted with eco-friendly electric motors (rentals from $145). Chicago Electric Boat Company has four locations on the river: at Marina City , the Chicago Water Plaza , the Chicago Riverwalk downtown and at the new Rockwell on the River on the North Branch. 300 N. State St. Marina Level – Unit EE. You can even hire a certified captain to drive if your whole crew wants to take advantage of a day on the water without the stress of manning the ship.

Chicagoans are likely familiar with one of the most popular boat experiences on the Chicago River: The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s boat tour (from $54). 112 E. Wacker Drive.

Kayakers in the water.

Multiple companies offer kayaking tours of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

Manuel Martinez/WBEZ

5. Go paddling

Kayak Chicago , Urban Kayaks and Wateriders offer tours at multiple locations along the river and Lake Michigan.

The city’s boathouses are also a great place to rent a kayak or canoe to paddle the water. You can rent a canoe or kayak from Chicago River Canoe & Kayak at the Clark Park Boathouse (3400 N. Rockwell); a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddle board from the Lincoln Park Boat Club at the Lincoln Park Boathouse (2341 N. Cannon Drive); and kayaks from REI at Ping Tom Memorial Park Boathouse in Chinatown (300 W. 19th St.).

This WBEZ guide to kayaking outside the city includes more than a dozen other recommendations.

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to kids and adults.

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to kids and adults.

6. Take a sail

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to both adults and kids brand new to the sport. All the courses get new sailors out on the water and cover the basic skills you’ll need to be comfortable setting sail.

  • Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club has four-week adult sailing lessons at different levels. They also offer a “women on the water” course, designed by and for women sailors. Courses are $385 for non-club members. The club also offers a variety of youth sailing programs ; prices vary. 601 W. Montrose Ave.
  • Columbia Sailing School ’s learn-to-sail introductory course teaches all the sailing basics over two sessions ($220). Youth summer sailing programs are also offered. 111 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • The Chicago Yacht Club ’s sailing education program is spread out across three sessions and costs $730 for non-club members. Summer sailing school for youngsters is broken up by age group. 400 E. Monroe St.
  • Jackson Park Yacht Club ’s learn-to-sail program is led by seasoned sailor Erica Trejo. The three-session courses include both classroom and on-the-water instruction and cost $499 for non-club members. Junior sailing classes are also available. 6400 S. Promontory Drive.

7. Try out rowing

No matter if you’re an experienced rower or brand new to the sport, you can join the city’s vibrant rowing community. The Chicago Rowing Foundation (CRF) hosts camps, clinics and seasonal teams from its location out of the Clark Park Boathouse . Adults can sign up online for a learn-to-row class (from $200); youth can join the summer or fall camp to prepare for teams that run during the school year. 3400 N. Rockwell St.

The Lincoln Park Boat Club , which rows out of the Lincoln Park Boathouse, Clark Park Boathouse and Lathrop Homes Boathouse, also offers youth teams and camps. Its nine-session learn-to-row courses for adults (from $310) are popular for beginner rowers. 2341 N. Cannon Drive.

You can take stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, lessons on Lake Michigan.

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Chicago Sun-Times

8. Stand up for paddleboarding

If you’re up for a different kind of challenge, give stand-up paddleboarding — also called SUP — a go on Lake Michigan.

If you’re new to the sport and want to give it a try with some help, local outfitter Chicago SUP offers private lessons ($100) and group lessons (from $75) from its locations at North Avenue Beach and Diversey Harbor.

Further north at Montrose Beach, Kayak Chicago also rents stand-up paddleboards on the lakefront. Closer to downtown, Urban Kayaks offers rentals at Monroe Harbor.

If you’re a yoga fan, Chicago SUP’s on-paddleboard yoga class (from $75) challenges your balance while stretching your body. You can even take their full moon SUP yoga class on Lake Michigan under the glow of the night sky.

Tip for first-timers: You’ll want to pick a nonwindy day to avoid the waves. We also recommend bringing a dry bag for your wallet and phone, waterproof sandals (such as Chacos ) and a carabiner to clip your keys to your belt loop so you don’t drop them in the lake.

On anniversary of Lockport cave tragedy, new state oversight rules pending

LOCKPORT, N.Y. -- On June 12, 2023, one family's life changed forever when a boat traveling through relatively shallow waters capsized during the Lockport Cave and Underground Tour.

Investigators say 65-year-old Harshad Shah was trapped under the boat and died.

"I can't imagine what that family is going through and I would never pretend to be able to just pass a bill and say now it's okay," New York state Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt, R-North Tonawanda, said.

Ortt, who represents the Niagara County canal city, said as people looked for answers it quickly became clear there was a gap in oversight of the tourist attraction.

"It's unusual," he said. "It's not an amusement park. You're not operating a vehicle or vessel on the Erie Canal or on the lake or on the river. It sort of doesn't fit neatly in a lot of the other definitions that we use to regulate either boats or attractions or what have you."

Ortt and state Assembyman Mike Norris, who also represents the area, introduced legislation to clarify what state agency would provide oversight and protection. They worked with the governor's office, which added its own input on language and stayed on as co-sponsors in their respective houses.

"This hopefully helps both parties, the operator, as well as patrons if there's a concern," he said.

Last week, the Assembly followed the Senate in passing legislation that will require at least an annual inspection of any vessel operated on privately or publicly owned underground non-navigable waterways. It ensures the Cave Tour and any other that may be like it are under the purview of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Ortt expects Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign the bill since her office contributed to the legislation.

"I don't know if it would have saved the gentleman who lost his life a year ago. I don't think I can say that but that doesn't mean that it didn't highlight a gap, a hole, that needed to be corrected going forward," he said.

Ortt said in light of the tragedy it's important people have assurances moving forward the boat is safe, is inspected regularly and there is accountability.

Is Wu-Tang’s Million Dollar ‘Once Upon a Time in Shaolin’ Album Actually Good?

We got to listen to Wu-Tang Clan’s infamous one-of-one album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, during a special listening session in New York City. Here are our thoughts.

On a Saturday night in June, I found myself on one of the Lower East Side streets where Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring used to throw up their work for free, in the subway stations and on the sides of buildings in the late ‘70s. I was on Norfolk, just below Houston, in a synagogue listening to a sampling of the now $6 million sole existing physical copy of the almost a decade old Wu-Tang Clan album, Once Upon a Time in Shaolin . Since its reveal in 2015, the album has been a lightning rod, provoking an array of responses from the public, and within the Clan itself , over how the album was recorded, where it ended up, and who it should belong to. The Once Upon a Time in Shaolin project both addresses and anticipates many of the issues that would befall the recorded music industry, and arguably the global economy. OUATIS is an ordeal, and an enterprise that confronts its audience with a deceptively difficult question: What is a rap album actually worth? Lost in all this head scratching and navel gazing is the elemental question of what the album actually sounds like. Is it a bust? A lost classic? A combination of both? I tend towards the latter. But before we get to that, let’s consider the almost 30 year journey the album took to get to me.

It begins in Tilburg, a small city in the Netherlands, in the late ‘90s, when an 18 year old Moroccan entertainment law student named Tarik Azzougarh had a Quixotic dream many of us shared at the time: he wanted to join the Wu-Tang Clan. The Clan—consisting of RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, the now deceased Ol' Dirty Bastard, U-God, and Masta Killa—was coming off a flawless four years. They were birthed into New York City’s hip-hop ecosystem fully formed, a collective of nine Staten Island and Brooklyn kids from public housing with an aesthetic built on a matinee double feature of Kung Fu and Blaxploitation. Theirs was a vision of urban poverty articulated by dense, abstract rhymes composed of ghetto mysticism, pop culture references, and street raps that shouldn’t make sense but does. The RZA, their leader—who has always had a taste for brilliant and bugfucked music business experiments that innovate and redraw the lines dividing art and commerce—introduced this crew of strangers and their inscrutable lore, and immediately began executing an implausible master plan to launch them all as solo rappers on different record labels, and turn them all into stars. For the most part, the plan worked.

So Tarik, the Dutch settler, washed up on our shore, armed with little but hope and uncertainty. By his unverified telling (between podcast interviews and the strange and shaggy book about the making of Once Upon a Time in Shaolin by Cyrus Bozorgi ), within a few visits, the aspiring rapper/producer, who named himself Cilvaringz, had found RZA’s mother and sister at the short lived Wu-Tang nail salon, Wu Nails, on Victory Boulevard in Staten Island. Cilvaringz used this link and tremendous, dogged persistence to become the first international Wu-Tang signee as a Clan affiliate. As his senior project in college, Cilvaringz proposed, and got to manage RZA’s first solo international tour, on which he also served as the opener. By 2008, he began working on his most ambitious and farfetched sounding project with RZA: A Wu-Tang Clan album that would be sold for millions to a single buyer for top dollar. It would take seven years, during which the nature and business of producing and consuming music would change radically.

charter a yacht hawaii

During this time, the industry was confused, trying an array of strategies and experiments to find a viable path forward. The RZA’s dream was to use OUATIS as a kind of performance art that could remind people that a rap album, particularly a good one from a collection of generation defining artists, was a labor intensive special effort, one that talented and thoughtful people dedicate years of their lives to. That it deserves better than you throwing it on while you’re half focused on your infinite scroll, skipping around waiting for a track to catch your ear, then hastily forever dismissing it as “mid” and moving on to the next bit of stimuli.

The RZA and Cilvaringz had hoped this project might be purchased by a record label with vision, an altruistic endeavor they could underwrite as a tide to raise all boats. It would be played in museums, in concert halls. It was confined to two CDs and held in an ornate suitcase that would tour the world. For two hours, across a reported 30 songs that required seven years of work to compose, the audience would sit in contemplation of a recorded rap album and remind themselves what it means to listen . But the record labels said “no thanks,” as did whatever benevolent art collectors or high society types RZA might’ve hoped the album could’ve attracted. In retrospect, it ended up in the most predictable place, in the hands of a douchebag pharma bro with fuck you money who bought it on a lark and kept it in his apartment as a $2 million plaything. The other members of the Clan, largely left in the dark during this process , were less than enthusiastic in their response.

We all know what happened to Martin Shkreli several years after purchasing OUATIS , and if you don’t, feel free to brush up with this link . But the story becomes interesting again seven years later, in 2021, when an NFT art collective that calls itself PleasrDAO (the DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization) purchases the album “from” the Department of Justice, as part of Shkreli’s asset seizure, for $4 million or double what Shkreli paid for it.

Once Upon a Time in Shaolin was sold with tight legal restrictions around how it’s allowed to be “commercially exploited” which can’t happen for 88 years from the time of initial purchase. One of the common complaints I’d imagine most diehard Wu-Tang fans have is why it can’t just be put online to stream for free—and there are a number of cynical reasons—but the one that isn’t cynical is it goes against the wishes of the RZA, because he understood that the minute it’s available to stream, and the public has control of the album, it will no longer be special.

On Saturday, June 8th, I got to experience that album, at least partially, as RZA had intended. The Angel Orensanz Foundation building is the oldest standing synagogue left in New York City. It is also the setting where the photographer Danny Hastings shot t he cover of the first Wu-Tang album, Enter the 36 Chambers . Pleasr clearly blew a bag on this three day event, parceled out in lots of 35 over the course of three days for media and influencer types, mixed in with a select few diehard fans of both the Wu-Tang Clan and cryptom before the album travels to the Museum of New and Old Art in Tasmania, where it will play for nine days.

The synagogue is comically beautiful, a Tim Burton church dramatically draped in flowing translucent fabrics that close off sections on either side of the main hall where VIPs lounge and supplies are stored. There are conversation sofas to lounge on, near the front of the room, and a few rows of chairs lined up behind the couches for the small crowd. At the front of the room is a shrine spread with dozens of flickering candles, all directing your eye to the focal point artifact at its head: The large case embossed with a Wu logo housing the double disk album that serves as an open ark, a torah in the temple. Soothing white noise of a tide coming in is piped in through a massive sound system. Fans wait in line to take pictures with the case, and enjoy branded, premix margaritas with sesame oil floats, which weren’t as gross as they might sound.

And then our phones are secured in pouches and the album begins, or I shouldn’t say that, because what we heard was the same quick cut edits that played for a room of potential buyers a decade ago at a listening event at MoMA , before the initial auction. It was 17 minutes, followed by an additional two songs played in full. The smoke machines started to fill the room with a pleasant, immersive fog and the music faded in. There were no visuals, no one spoke, some nodded their heads and tapped their feet, polite applause followed each song, but that’s it. It was different from a standard listening party because of the stakes. It’s not work we’ll all have access to in a matter of days or weeks. You’re just kind of alone with your thoughts, isolated from the spin cycle and echo chamber, interrogating the quality of the music being played. You get one shot, and that’s it.

For what it’s worth, I thought what I heard of the album was dope. There was a Redman heavy song I appreciated because I love Redman. One of the songs played in full for us was a sequel to the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...  classic “Rainy Days,” and when the souped up remix of the beat dropped I got chills. The title track is a Morriconesque epic that sounded absolutely wild in the synagogue. But “in the synagogue” is the key qualifier, and why I wouldn’t take my opinion too seriously. As word begins to leak out, beware the chattering class who will be privy to hearing something a few dozen people on earth have ever heard, which could inflate the assessment of it in their estimation. I listened to Wu-Tang’s 2014 effort, A Better Tomorrow , on my ride home, and as I biked the Manhattan Bridge with an AirPod in, I tried to imagine what it might sound like artfully edited down to its best 17 minutes, played on a John Woo stage set through a state of the art sound system. And I thought that would probably sound dope too, and suddenly I could see the point RZA was trying to make.

The least important thing about Once Upon a Time in Shaolin is the quality of the album. But if you wanted to approximate the tone and general vibes, you could listen to A Better Tomorrow , an album that garnered lukewarm response upon release. That album, produced by RZA, was made in three years, within the seven year span the Clan was working on OUATIS , in what sounds like a more coherent and intentional manner. You could also listen to Cilvaringz’s I , released in 2017. It’s a perfectly fine work of Wu-Tang cosplay and karaoke, with the sort of accomplished, replacement level RZA beats that 4th Disciple and Mathematics once populated “lesser” Wu projects with.

The quality of the album doesn’t matter because if it’s not a classic, it would only serve to bolster the proof of concept for the experiment. As a commodity, the album has never been cheaper, which has radically remapped the financial structure for how artists produce and get paid for their music. When was the last time you had A Better Tomorrow conversation? When was the last time you thought about it? The value of this album is in its scarcity, it exploits our curiosity. At a time when everything is immediately accessible to us via the nearest screen, here is one thing we can’t have. It’s a Schrödinger’s box and you want to open the box, and a decade later it continues to captivate its audience because it provokes many of the questions that haunt the music industry, and our lives and at least suggests an answer that provokes many more questions and problems: Ethical questions of access to and ownership of art—that rap has always been a populist medium and it all should remain cheap and accessible for everyone—as well as functional questions of how to continue operating an industry dissolving before our eyes.

If you’re in New York City, head to The Metropolitan Museum of Art for a few hours and walk its halls. Someday soon you may be able to hear Once Upon a Time in Shaolin there, but for now, “all” you’ll see is a respectable cross section of the entire history of art made by people from every corner of the Earth. And among these paintings, sculptures, and artifacts, you’ll see devotional paintings and sculptures, and portraits of rich white guys. Work that was groundbreaking and important in its technique, in its applied theory, but work that was commissioned by the church, or the crown, or the super wealthy gentry class.

What you won’t find are at least some Basquiats and Harings. You can find facsimiles online, but you can’t and may never again be able to experience their gale force, platonic experience, full scale in a large, blank, breathable space, hanging centered and framed on a wall. Because some are in other museums, and some are in private collections, in the living rooms and dining rooms and studies of very rich collectors around the world. The exact scenes Haring once painted on D train platforms can now sell at auction for over five million dollars. In 2017, a Basquiat sold for 110.5 million , thanks to a market set by the ancestors of the PleasrDAO guys and collectors like Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz. Or millionaires and billionaires minted by a former version of the rap industry, with different stakes, different scales, and different incentive models. It seems extreme to me. But someone was willing to pay that much for them, so I suppose that’s what they’re worth.
