Hi Nicolas, Overall, the crew was very good - professional and pleasant. Sporting activities were better organised this year - the guys really knew what they were doing and were doing an outstanding job keeping everyone happy - thats Marc, Billy and Fraser. Great service throughout the trip. I have to mention that we were surprised by the beauty of the islands and Croatia. So, who owns that mega yacht docked at Wrightsville Beach?

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - If you haven’t seen it, chances are you’ve heard about it. Skyfall, one of the largest yachts to ever cruise into Wrightsville Beach is the talk of the town.

So, who owns that huge yacht? His name is Roy Carroll.

Carroll, who lives in Greensboro, is the owner of The Carroll Companies, a real estate development firm valued at about $3 billion. He’s no stranger to the Wilmington area. Carroll is the developer of The Avenue , the planned $250 million project located on Military Cutoff Rd. The upscale development will feature luxury living, high-end shops, restaurants and a Westin Hotel. Construction was put on hold because of the pandemic, but is expected to begin this year.

While Skyfall is a luxury charter yacht, Carroll brought it to the Wrightsville Beach Marina for a couple weeks for personal use.

“Skyfall is entertaining friends and family for a couple of weeks prior to departing to the Mediterranean,” Carroll says. “Skyfall will take two and a half to three weeks to reach her destination of Croatia.”

The 191-foot long yacht is booked for charters in the Mediterranean through September. Clearly, it’s going to folks with lots of money. The going rate for a week on Skyfall is $400,000 plus approximately another $100,000 for fuel dockage and tips, according to Cameron Sieradzan, the media director for The Carroll Companies.

Yes, Skyfall is named after the 2012 James Bond movie. The previous owner reportedly paid a pretty penny to use the name. When Carroll purchased the yacht, the name went with it.

“We thought about renaming the yacht, but the name has stuck,” Carroll says. “Plus, we already have the yacht’s theme song.”

Skyfall has 15 crew members and can accommodate up to 14 guests. The yacht features a wine cellar, two hot tubs, a masseuse, two chefs and a helipad that converts to a basketball court.

Carroll also owns Rhino, a 154-foot yacht that will arrive in Wrightsville Beach in a few weeks before heading to New England for the summer.

Skyfall will leave Wrightsville Beach on June 8.

There’s something about billionaires and big boats . Whether they’re superyachts or megayachts, men with money love to splash out on these sizeable sea-going giants. And that all began in 1954 — with the big dreams of Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.

Onassis, keen to keep his luxury lifestyle afloat when at sea, bought Canadian anti-submarine frigate HMCS Stormont after World War II. He spent millions turning it into an opulent super yacht, named it after his daughter — and the Christina O kicked off a trend among tycoons. To this day, the world’s richest men remain locked in an arms race to build the biggest, fastest, most impressive superyacht of all. Here are 10 of our favourites…

Eclipse, owned by Roman Abramovich

Built by: Blohm+Voss of Hamburg, with interiors and exteriors designed by Terence Disdale. Launched in 2009, it cost $500 million (the equivalent of £623 million today).

Owned by: Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the owner of private investment company Millhouse LLC and owner of Chelsea Football Club. His current net worth is $17.4 billion.

Amevi, owned by Lakshmi Mittal

Built by: The Oceanco shipyard, also in The Netherlands. With exterior design by Nuvolari & Lenard and interior design by Alberto Pinto, it launched in 2007 (and cost around $125 million to construct).

Owned by: Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, chairman and CEO of Arcelor Mittal, the world’s largest steelmaking company. He owns 20% of Queen Park Rangers, and has a net worth of $18 billion.

Owned by: British businessman Sir Leonard Blavatnik. Founder of Access Industries — a multinational industrial group with current holdings in Warner Music Group, Spotify and the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat — he is worth $39.9 billion.

The superyachts owned by tech moguls

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is set to join the exclusive club of yacht-owning tech tycoons as the rumoured owner of Oceanco's mighty 127m sailing yacht . Though it should come as no surprise - other big names in tech such as the late Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison and Paul Allen have been responsible for some of the biggest and most ground-breaking superyachts in the world...

The 127-metre Oceanco sailing yacht Koru, formerly Y721, was launched and reportedly delivered to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in April 2023. This three-masted schooner, meaning “new beginnings” in Maori, with an expected 33000 GT and a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, is the largest in the world and the longest built in the Netherlands at Oceanco. Knocking Lürssen's Eos , owned by Biller and Diane von Furstenburg, off the top spot, Koru harnesses design similarities with her black hull, white superstructure and classic lines. However, the intricate gold paintwork, scarlet bootstrap and elaborate figurehead on the bow particularly set her apart.

Larry Ellison

American business magnate Larry Ellison is the co-founder of the billion-dollar computer tech corporation Oracle. In 2004, he commissioned the 138-metre Lürssen superyacht Rising Sun (pictured), which stands today as the 15th largest yacht in the world. It was also the last yacht that ever came from the drawing boards of legendary designed Jon Bannenberg, sporting a military-esque profile with a lean destroyer-type hull and extensive use of structural glass . Rising Sun boasts 8,000m² of living space including a wine cellar and basketball court, with a crew of 45. One of her tenders, a catamaran, even carries the yacht’s 4x4 vehicle ashore. 

Ellison later sold the yacht to media mogul David Geffen and has since hosted a parade of Hollywood's glitterati on board including Leonardo DiCaprio, Steven Spielberg, Bruce Springsteen and Oprah Winfrey – to name a few. 

In 2011, Ellison appeared to downsize and took delivery of the 88-metre Feadship Musashi . Not unlike Rising Sun in its appearance, structural glass features heavily throughout with a central glass lift, surrounded by a stainless steel and glass staircase that passes through every deck.

The late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is responsible for two of the most iconic superyachts in the world. At 126-metres in length, Octopus is perhaps his most famous. Built by Lürssen in 2003, this ice-classed superyacht was designed for extended cruising to the most remote locations on earth with a range of 12,500 nautical miles. Home to a helicopter garage, drive-in tender garage, six tenders, and a submarine, she packs a serious punch within her 9,932GT – not to mention the cinema, swimming pool, recording studio, basketball court and spa. At the end of 2019, she joined the market for the very first time , having completed an eight-month refit at Blohm+Voss, and remains the benchmark for exploration yachting.

Tatoosh is another honourable mention and was built by German shipyard Nobiskrug in 2000, three years prior to the delivery of Octopus . At 92-metres, she's smaller than her successor, but to describe Tatoosh as "small" would be a severe understatement. Highlights include a six-foot-deep swimming pool, a pair of helipads, a crew of 30, and a custom 12-metre Hinckley powerboat that she carries on her top deck. Tatoosh is also listed for sale following a refit earlier this year. 

Yachts for charter

The 78-metre Feadship Venus was built for the late Apple boss and founder Steve Jobs. Built under the codename Project Aqua, Venus was launched to international fanfare in 2012, heralded for its extensive use of glass and pared-back design courtesy of Philippe Starck . Innovative features include a false top deck that conceals the communication and television receivers from view and a passarelle that, when opened, looks like the charging port of an iPhone. Venus ’s interior details have been closely guarded since its launch. Sadly, Jobs died a year before the yacht was delivered.

Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi led the team that built the first edition of the Microsoft Office software suite and was rumoured to have previously owned Lürssen’s iconic 71-metre SKAT .  Nearly two decades after her launch in 2002, she joined the market for the first time and now Simonyi is thought to have upgraded to the 89-metre Lürssen Norn . Both yachts, penned by Espen Onion, share similar design features. Standout features include an alfresco cinema and adapted depth pool floor with dance floor. Norn was delivered in May 2023.

Sergey Brin

Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly owns the high-speed SilverYachts superyacht named Dragonfly , after Google’s once-secret project to launch a censored search engine in China. Delivered in 2009, the 73.3-metre Dragonfly was hailed as the fastest, most fuel-efficient long-range cruising superyacht on the water with a transatlantic range at 22 knots and a fuel consumption of only 360 litres per hour at 18 knots, extending her range to 4,500 nautical miles. Dragonfly is said to have a dance floor and open-air movie theatre on board. The vessel was applauded for its contribution to the disaster relief effort in Vanuatu after Hurricane Pam devastated the island in 2015. The crew reportedly moved 62 metric tons of freshwater ashore, treated over 250 patients, facilitated three medical evacuations, and built shelters in multiple villages and cleared numerous helicopter landing zones for ongoing support.

Google’s billionaire co-founder Larry Page purchased the 60-metre explorer yacht conversion Senses from a New Zealand businessman Sir Douglas Myers back in 2011. The globe-trotting superyacht features interiors by Philippe Starck and can accommodate a total of 12 guests on board, with primary guests reaping the benefits of the master suite's gyro-stabilised bed. Senses also houses an exceptional toy box with three high-speed tenders, six wave runners, a jet board and a JetLev. According to the New Zealand Herald, Senses is currently undergoing a refit in Whangārei, New Zealand, after being sold to an unknown buyer in 2020. 

Barry Diller

The world’s largest three-masted schooner – also the third largest sailing yacht in the world – is owned by fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg and her husband Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC/InterActiveCorp and Expedia Group. The 92.92-metre sailing yacht, named Eos , was built in Germany by Lürssen and delivered in 2006 with a trio of masts that stand 61-metres tall. The sailing yacht has hosted the couple's star-studded group of friends including Andy Cohen, Gayle King, Bradley Cooper, Harry Styles and Karlie Kloss. The interiors were designed by Francois Catroux, who Vanity Fair named as “the super-rich's favourite interior designer" in 2016.

Mark Zuckerburg

The 107-metre Kleven superyacht Andromeda was built for serial superyacht owner Graeme Hart and delivered under the name Ulysses . In 2017, a year after its launch, rumours began circulating that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerburg had purchased the rugged, six-deck explorer (although a Facebook spokesperson was quick to stamp out the rumours and released a statement denying the claims). Andromeda can carry 36 guests and is equipped with an impressive inventory of toys and tenders, including six motorbikes, two ATVs, a helicopter and an amphibious rib. Five years after her launch, Andromeda still ranks among the largest explorer yachts in the world . 

Eric Schmidt

The former Google ceo Eric Schmidt backed out of the purchase of the abandoned 81.3-metre Oceanco Alfa Nero but has been said to have moved onto become the new owner of a 95-metre Lürssen. Kismet was sold in September 2023 to the billionaire as part of one of the biggest brokerage deal of the year. With the details shrouded in secrecy the yacht is now aptly known as Whisper . Espen Onio was responsible for her iconic exterior while inside was thanks to  Reymond Langton , achieving the original brief from the previous commissioning owner Shahid Khan of “caviar and champagne.” Standout details include the hi-tech, art deco saloon, a private observation platform and the Persian-inspired spa area.

The co-founder and former ceo of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, has been rumoured to own the 99.9-metre Feadship , Moonrise. The yacht’s clean and strong lines, penned by Chris Bottoms from Studio de Voogt , won the highly competitive class of best displacement motor yachts above 3,000 GT in the World Superyacht Awards 2021. Features include the helicopter landing deck and modern interiors by Remi Tessier . Accommodation is for up to 16 guests, and there are 32 crew members onboard Moonrise to attend to the guests' every need. The Ukrainian-American mogul is also said to own the accompanying support vessel Nebula.

Evan Speigel

The Silicone Valley ceo, Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel has been reportedly said to own the 94.8-metre Feadship Bliss. Delivered in 2021 the motor yacht penned by Feadship's Studio De Voogt Naval Architects has most recently been spotted cruising Auckland in September 2023. Spiegel is rumoured to be Feadship's younger client. Bliss can accommodate up to 18 guests across nine staterooms; however little else is known about the 2983 GT yacht.

This week, she has spoken to Teresa Payne, the managing partner of law firm Parfitt Cresswell...

Teresa Payne's route to success was far from traditional.

Now the owner of the successful Parfitt and Cresswell, with offices in London, Berkshire, Surrey, Sussex and Kent, Teresa's journey started in a small mining town in South Wales.

Growing up in a working class family, she left school at 16 with no qualifications, and "low expectations" for her future.

A few years later, in 1987, while in her early 20s, she gave birth to her son and got married.

It wasn't until around six years later that she got the idea to train as a lawyer - an idea that came from her own divorce.

"It was because of the really poor experience with my solicitor that I started looking into how I could do it myself and that triggered my interest in law", the 57-year-old said.

'The life-changing moment'

But, obviously, she faced the "big barrier" of having no qualifications.

For her, the answer came in 1996 when she found an access to law course.

"That was a real life change because it opened up the door of possibilities for me," she said.

"When you leave school without any qualifications, and come from a more working class background, it's very hard to be what you can't see," she added.

Eventually, she made it to Cardiff University, her young son in tow, and "pushed through" as a mature student. It was here she came up against another challenge...

'You'd be better in hospitality'

After getting her degree, she was required to take another course - called the Legal Practice Course, and she sought help from her male tutor, who told her she was too old to take the next step.

Recalling the conversation, Teresa said she was told: "You're a mature student, you're older, you're a single mum and you haven't got much chance.

"Instead, he suggested that hospitality would be a good alternative and I would do well there.

"He said it in such a caring way. Now we would call it unconscious bias," she said.

Undefeated and determined to stay on the path she wanted, Teresa eventually qualified as a lawyer in 2004.

Three years later, she had her own firm.

'There was a major panic'

"I really wanted to do my own thing, sort of create my own world," she said as she retold the story of how she came across Parfitt Cresswell in Fulham Broadway, discovered the managing partner was retiring and offered to buy the business from him.

She didn't have a lot of money saved, so she borrowed from a "couple of lenders".

"At the time, it was such a big deal because you are borrowing a substantial amount of money in a personal capacity. It became very tricky in the major economic downturn of 2008," she said.

"There was this major panic of 'oh my goodness, what have I done'. When I look back, though, I'm glad I did it."

When the financial crash hit, Parfitt Cresswell was more than 50% property focused and work "dried out practically overnight", she said.

"It made me realise that actually work diversity was so important," Teresa said, adding that she eventually expanded the company's family law sector, and introduced private client work.

The challenges

One of the first challenges, in the early days of her career, was childcare, but Teresa said she was very lucky to have supportive and helpful parents.

"It is a tough balance, particularly when you're running your own business because it's not 9am to 5pm," she said.

"For me, I would try to carve out time for us to have together. When I just couldn't do that, my parents were there, so he has a tremendous relationship with them."

Without support, she said childcare can be "prohibitive" for anyone working or studying.

In the later stages of her career, dealing with conflict became another obstacle.

She said "societal expectations" left women with a natural reaction to just "keep the peace" when an argument occurs, but that isn't an option in business.

"I learnt early on that doesn't work, because it flares up and then there is a tendency to let our emotions get in the way," she said.

'We are worthy to be there' - Teresa's top tips

One of Teresa's top tips is to deal with any issues that come up head on and figuring out a way to move on.

"In some cases it is difficult to get past it, but in others you can and then you have actually set the bar for what is acceptable," she said.

"We teach people how to treat us. So when you walk in a room, bring your presence, expect people to treat you well and don't apologise for being there as if you are not worthy.

Practically, she said women who want to get into law should start by getting some work experience.

For those studying, she advised doing some pro bono work, saying she volunteered for Citizens Advice.

Not only does it look good to employers in terms of soft skills and understanding the business, but it helps people to work out if it is actually a profession they will enjoy.

Getting a mentor is also helpful, Teresa added - a "huge asset".

Despite some preconceptions about lawyers, Teresa stressed that a person's background doesn't matter- as long as they "bring something to the table".

"You may hit a wall in some places, there are many places that will welcome you. There will be people who want to help you get in and get qualified."

Happy Anniversary: The Celtics earned their 18th NBA championship exactly 16 years to the day of their last title.

Wyc Grousbeck bought the team for $360 million in 2002 and just delivered the franchise’s second championship during his tenure—a league-record 18th title.

When Wyc Grousbeck purchased the Boston Celtics in 2002, he made it clear to his partners that it wasn’t about the money. “Imagine yourself being in a parade, if we win the championship, with your kids, getting a ring and hanging a banner,” the 61-year-old recalls saying. “We’re doing this for Celtic Pride.”

For the second time during his tenure, Grousbeck will have made good on that promise. On Monday, the Celtics earned a Game 5 victory over the Dallas Mavericks to collect their record-setting 18th NBA championship. Buoyed by a duo of stars in Jaylen Brown, the NBA Finals MVP, and Jayson Tatum, Boston ran through the playoffs, losing only three games, after posting a league-best 64-18 record in the regular season.

“We all watched the team the last few years—great teams, but not quite there,” an elated Grousbeck said to the sellout crowd at TD Garden in Boston. “And Brad [Stevens] was brilliant. We knew we needed to make changes. We knew we wanted to make changes, and Brad got it done. He brought in Jrue [Holiday], he brought in [Kristaps Porzingis], and here we are. Banner 18 is back!”

Making money may not have been Grousbeck’s primary goal, but that hasn’t stopped the Celtics from becoming a cash machine. According to Forbes , Boston is the 22nd most profitable franchise in all of sports , with an estimated $269 million in operating income combined over the last three seasons. The Celtics are worth an estimated $4.7 billion , including debt, a staggering 1,200% increase over the $360 million Grousbeck and his partners paid 22 years ago. Only three NBA teams boast valuations higher than Boston—the Los Angeles Lakers ($6.4 billion), the New York Knicks ($6.6 billion) and the Golden State Warriors ($7.7 billion).

That sky-high appreciation has made the Grousbecks quite wealthy. The family of Irving Grousbeck, Wyc’s father, is worth an estimated $1.8 billion , and they’re hardly the only ones benefitting from basketball’s financial golden age. NBA team values have grown roughly 2,200% since 1998, when Forbes first started tracking that data. During that period, the Celtics have the ninth-best appreciation rate among their contemporaries.

As the NBA continues to reach new heights, it makes Grousbeck’s entry seem almost clairvoyant. The league is reportedly negotiating a new media rights package that amounts to $76 billion in fees over 11 years , more than double its previous annual rate, while basketball continues expand globally and captivate fans in overseas markets. A recent survey by S&P Global Intelligence reported that 52% of online adults in China watch NBA games , as well as two-thirds of basketball viewers in France and Italy.

“I really like our chances to keep growing,” Grousbeck says. “The NBA is a great product or a great experience, and we have so many international fans.”

COURT BATTLE

Buying the Celtics proved to be a fortuitous turn of events for Grousbeck, who obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan and began working as a corporate lawyer in the 1980s before realizing another career path might suit him better.

“I would look out at our parking lot, we shared a building with Kleiner Perkins, and all the lawyers were driving average cars and all the Kleiner guys had Ferraris and Lamborghinis,” he says. “I thought maybe I ought to make a switch.”

So, Grousbeck pivoted. He earned his MBA from Stanford University in the early 1990s and became a venture capitalist. The internet was starting to boom, and Grousbeck built a bankroll by scoring big wins with web search engine and portal Lycos, online retailer eToys.com and medical technology company Conor Medsystems.

Later that decade, Grousbeck and his family relocated back to Boston, and he went back to his roots as a die-hard sports fan of the city’s teams. (He bought season tickets for the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics.) While taking his young daughter to games, Grousbeck observed that the Celtics were lagging in attendance on a nightly basis. The team was also partially owned by a limited partnership public traded on the New York Stock Exchange, revealing a cash-flow positive business.

The idea of team ownership was something Grousbeck was somewhat familiar with. His father, who founded Continental Cablevision in 1963 and merged it into telecom giant US West 33 years later, considered buying the Red Sox in the 1980s. A deal never materialized, but it influenced the younger Grousbeck. Sensing an opportunity, he set a meeting with then-Celtics owner Paul Gaston and walked out with a handshake agreement minutes later.

“He got a record price for the team, $360 million,” Grousbeck says. “It was by far a record in the NBA, and he couldn't have been nicer about the whole thing. I think he made a very reasonable market deal back then, and then we were all surprised by what happened to the team afterwards.”

MONEY BALLERS

Grousbeck didn’t have anywhere close to that sum, though, leaving him scrambling to fund the purchase. He started by mortgaging his house and sending a nonrefundable eight-figure deposit. Borrowing 50% of the sale price got him closer. In the end, Grousbeck assembled a consortium of more than 20 investors, including his father, TPG Capital cofounder David Bonderman and Bain Capital co-chairman Stephen Pagliuca. The newly formed group, Boston Basketball Partners, closed the sale in 2002.

Since then, Grousbeck has led the franchise as its CEO and governor, a position required by the league to own at least 15% of a franchise. That hasn’t stopped his partners from contributing. Pagliuca, for example, played an importing role in recruiting former Celtics great Danny Ainge back to the franchise as an executive. With the acquisitions of future Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, and an incumbent star in Paul Pierce, Ainge quickly constructed a champion, with the Celtics claiming the NBA title in 2008. And while he’s now with the Utah Jazz, Ainge later traded away Garnett and Pierce, returning the Celtics draft picks that would eventually become Brown and Tatum.

Basketball has opened many other doors for Grousbeck. Five years ago, he launched Cincoro Tequila alongside his wife, Emilia Fazzalari, Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wes Edens, Lakers co-owner Jeanie Buss and former Charlotte Hornets managing owner and Basketball Hall of Famer Michael Jordan. Since 2019, the company has sold two million bottles, Grousbeck says, and recently added a slew of athletes as investors, including Derek Jeter, Serena Williams and Dustin Johnson.

Grousbeck is also the inspiration behind NBC sitcom Extended Family , which is produced by his friend, Red Sox co-owner Tom Werner, and stars Donald Faison as the owner of the Celtics and Jon Cryer, his wife’s ex-husband who lives with them. Meanwhile, he’s raising a third fund at his venture capital outfit, Causeway Partners, with the first investment being a “pretty sizable position” in the newly formed, for-profit golf entity PGA Tour Enterprises.

“I'm in there alongside John Henry and Steve Cohen and Arthur Blank,” Grousbeck says. “Causeway is in there in a reasonably big way by our standards.”
