D-Day 80th anniversary marked in Cornwall with 80-boat flotilla

The flotilla set off from where around 27,000 American troops left the River Fal 80 years ago to head to Normandy

The 80th anniversary of D-Day was commemorated today in Cornwall with a spectacular flotilla of 80 boats - one to mark every year since the landings in Normandy. Following a wreath-laying service in the morning, vessels set off from Falmouth to gather at Tolverne on the River Fal, where American troops left for Normandy 80 years ago.

Allied Forces were stationed in and around Falmouth during the Second World War and some 27,000 departed from the River Fal to take part in the D-Day landings. From this starting point, the fleet of vessels made their way down the channel of the Carrick Roads (the large body of deep water that separates Falmouth from the Roseland peninsula), passing in front of Pendennis Point where crowds had gathered to watch, before ending near Gyllyngvase Beach.

Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID) manager Richard Wilcox said, "What a memorable day it has been. Falmouth did itself proud. The flotilla event will live long in the memory, with 80 boats adorned with UK and US flags to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings, making its way along the River Fal, past Pendennis Castle and coastline. All those years ago, this area played a crucial role, with troops stationed at Tolverne, Turnaware Point and other locations along the river, and that is why we wanted to mark the occasion with an event such as this. Thank you to all who participated and helped organise with us."
