Calypso at 61m had a fast and short stop over at Elliot Bay Marine near downtown Seattle, this is per usual for a lot of superyachts when the run uphill to the Puget Sound, the jog up the Pacific west coast can be a grind, although this time of year late spring and early summer it can be majestic and amazing especially for offshore adventures, wildlife and fishing.

Mulder ThirtySix - Calypso

Mulder – Thirtysix Calipso

Superyacht 66-Summer-2020

Launched in the course of 2019 “Calypso” is from Mulder Shipyard’s ThirtySix range. The Dutch yard built it in aluminium alloys sporting an FDHF hull by Van Oossanen.

Mulder ThirtySix - Calypso

This shipyard is well known for the traditional looks of the yachts produced. La Favorite and the Wheelhouse have recently been flanked by the more classic Voyager and the modern ThirtySix. “Calypso” belongs to this latest family of yachts. It has been built on a 36 metre platform designed by Mulder with Van Oossanen Naval Architects’ studio and Claydon Reeves design studio. The famed Dutch yard provided the hull, the popular FDHF Fast displacement Hull Form used by several Dutch shipyards because of its attractive characteristics, performance and efficiency.

The modern design was initialled by Claydon Reeves studio which wanted to emphasize continuity between the interior and exterior spaces by deploying plenty of glass. Large floor to ceiling glazed panels almost extend over the entire perimeter of the main deck which allow plenty of light to penetrate the interiors while maintaining visual contact with the surroundings. All of this is guaranteed also thanks to opening topsides in line with the dining area.

Mulder ThirtySix - Calypso

Original video by the shipyard

On board Calypso, bright interiors stand out and they’re enhanced by light pale fine fabric and essences by Vickers Studio. The decor is elegant and refined with finishes expressing a conventional atmosphere of good taste.

The main saloon features soft sofas and low standing furniture so as to interfere as little as possible with the floor to ceiling glazed panels. A well appointed bar separates this area from the dining one which is aligned with sliding glass doors and outward opening topsides.

Mulder ThirtySix - Calypso

The owner’s suite takes up the wide body section of this deck and also includes a private study, a small corner lounge in which to relax, a large bathroom sporting marble tops as well as a private external terrace. Below this deck there are three guest cabins of which one is a VIP while the other two are equipped with twin beds.

The half-deck contains the helm controls station, while aft towards the stern just a handful of steps lead out onto the sun deck. An ‘al fresco’ dining set up protected by a hard top and a hydro massage tub with space enough for eight complete the picture. Twin Caterpillar C18 engines with 1,150 HP each propel “Calypso” to approximately 17 knots. For further information: Mulder Shipyard

The epic of Calypso, from minesweeper to Captain Cousteau

calypso superyacht owner

Calypso became a legend thanks to its famous owner, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who died in 1997. This former minesweeper was transformed by the oceanographer into an oceanographic expedition ship.

Chloé Torterat

Minesweeper in the British Royal Navy

On March 21, 1942, the minesweeper, built by the Ballard Marine Railways Company in Seattle, United States, was launched. Intended for the British Royal Navy , the ship's model is a BYMS-26. The 43-metre boat, with its wooden hull, was used for active service in the Mediterranean and then during the war in 1943. In 1944, it was based in the port of Taranto in Naples ( Italy ). The naval ship was disarmed in 1946 and deleted from the Naval Register in 1947.

After the Second World War, the ship was used as a ferry between Malta and the island of Gozo. It is renamed Calypso in homage to the nymph who imprisoned Ulysses on the island of Gozo for 10 years.

Spotted by Captain Cousteau

Thomas Loel Guinness, Irish billionaire and owner of the famous beer, bought the boat in 1950 to transform it into a luxury yacht. He meets Jacques-Yves Cousteau with whom he makes friends and who is looking for a ship to rent for 1 symbolic franc. The wealthy contractor accepted the offer and handed over the ship's keys to the naval officer. The Calypso then entered the Antibes shipyard to leave it in June 1951. After 9 months of work, the Calypso is transformed into an expedition ship and support base for diving , filmmaking and oceanographic research.

A floating laboratory

The Calypso which has become an oceanographic vessel, is fully re-equipped. All these equipments are quite revolutionary and evolve over the years. First of all, an underwater observation chamber is being built, in front of and under the bow, and will be equipped with 5 portholes for underwater photography. This room is located in the "nose" of the boat , three meters below the waterline. An underwater cage and front and rear platforms to accommodate a helicopter completed the package.

Among the equipment used to explore the seabed were two mini submarines called "Sea Fleas", a diving saucer and underwater scooters.

Expeditions on all the seas of the globe

The 1 re cousteau and his team began their expedition to the Red Sea on November 24, 1951 to study corals. On board, in addition to the numerous equipment, 28 people board each expedition. The Calypso will travel all the world's oceans and seas for 46 years to conduct marine missions, work to protect and raise awareness of the ocean ... In 1953, Cousteau and his team tested new underwater cameras and electronic flashes to photograph the deep sea and push the boundaries of underwater exploration .

In 1955, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Louis Malle made a documentary film on the Calypso . " The Silent World" is the second colour underwater film in history and tells the story of the commander's "frogmen" between 1954 and 1955. A year later, he received the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. This is how Commander Cousteau's oceanographic ship became famous

From 1967, Jacques-Yves Cousteau recorded the documentaries entitled The Underwater Odyssey of the Cousteau team . The show is broadcast in France, but also in the United States and Latin America, making it possible to promote the boat all over the world.

The shipwreck in Singapore and an end of life at Piriou shipyards

In January 1996, one year before the death of the Red Cap Commander, the Calypso is docked in the port of Singapore, before leaving for a report. She was accidentally hit by a barge and found herself immersed in the water for 17 days. She was rescued as best she could and brought back to La Rochelle in 1998. It remained there for nine years at the quayside, in a deplorable, damaged and unmaintained condition. In 2007, she was sent to Concarneau where she had to undergo repairs at the Piriou shipyards.

In 2009, work ceased due to a disagreement between the work sites and the Cousteau Foundation. In 2013, many mobilizations took place to save the ship, and it was finally Mrs Cousteau who sent the boat to Turkey for renovation. But in 2019, the site seems to be abandoned again.

Mayor claims drone intercepted near Moscow

Russian air defense units allegedly intercepted a drone over the city of Elektrostal in Moscow Oblast, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported in a Telegram post on Nov. 19.

Sobyanin claims the drone was heading towards central Moscow.

The Mayor also said emergency services were at work at the crash site but no casualties or damage to infrastructure have been reported.

The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the reports.

Since the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukrainian forces have targeted Russian military, logistics, and infrastructure sites in the occupied territories and within Russia.

Today's drone report comes just hours after Ukraine's alleged drone attack was intercepted over the Bogorodskoye municipal district in Moscow Oblast.

While claims of Ukrainian attacks within Russian territory have increased since summer 2023, Kyiv rarely comments on these reports.

feadship project 1012 yacht launched

92m hybrid electric Feadship Drizzle delivered to owner

The 91.8-metre Feadship superyacht Drizzle has now been delivered following successful sea trials in June. According to BOATPro , her final destination is Malta, an archipelago in the central Mediterranean.

The superyacht was last seen departing from the shipyard's facilities in Amsterdam (13 June). Built for a repeat Feadship owner who came to the project with "informed requests based on his long experience of yachting", Drizzle 's design is by Dutch studio Sinot and the owner's related design office.

Characterised by chamfered exterior contours and a more traditional flared bow, the yacht has a modern-classic style with naval architecture by Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects . Notably, she is the first Feadship to carry full Hybrid Electric Class notation.

Drizzle 's interior is designed to reflect an "understated family home" with natural materials and finishes throughout. Accommodation is found on the main deck, along with the large pool and open-air lounge shaded by the deckhead overhang.

Meanwhile, the owner's suite, family lounge and wellness area are situated on the upper decks. Up top, the sundeck serves as an observation vantage point with a forward-facing sofa and sun loungers, while the aft deck is used for storing two rescue tenders.

One of the owner's key requirements in building the yacht was to house a more spacious beach club in the stern, which occupies one-quarter of the total length of the lower deck. The large, fixed stern platform combines with two fold-down platforms to create 165 square metres of water-level lounging space. Sweeping staircases on either side of the stern platform lead to the main deck aft.

Between the engine room and the beach club is a side-loading garage with room for two 10-metre tenders, a ski boat and various water toys. Forward is the crew area, comprising the galley, crew mess and crew accommodation.

Drizzle carries full Hybrid Electric Class notation, the power package comprising two main engines and shaft-driven fixed pitch propellers, coupled with electric motors of 560kW each and 1MW of Li-ion batteries. The e-motors work as shaft generators to produce electricity to serve the hotel load or recharge the battery bank, as well as for low-speed navigation while the generators or batteries generate the required electrical power.

Albert Abma, Feadship project manager, commented on the launch in April: "Working with the experienced owner, designers and owner's team has been a professional pleasure. Gathering the operational experience of the owner's team with the yard’s building experience has resulted in this modern-classic, state-of-art and full-custom new Feadship".

The news comes closely after the first proper sighting of Project 713 , Feadship's first solar powered superyacht. She is now preparing for sea trials.
